Matheson, Rachel. "Sacramental Vision in Annie Dillard’s Holy the Firm." Literature and Theology 34, no. 1 (January 3, 2020): 64–82. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/litthe/frz042.

Abstract:
Abstract In this article I explore the central motif of vision in Annie Dillard’s short poetic narrative, Holy the Firm. Attention to the book’s tripartite structure reveals a movement through an aesthetic appreciation of creation, to an intellectual contemplation of the Fall, finally culminating in a mystical vision of wholeness in the redemptive descent of Christ. I turn to Julian of Norwich’s parable of the Lord and Servant in order to illuminate their shared attunement to the workings of divine love in the face of human suffering. For Dillard, Christ’s kenotic love is continually revealed in the Christian sacraments of baptism and communion. Finally, I suggest that through the artist, the thinker, and the nun, Dillard leads her reader toward a sacramental vision of the world, which locates the holy in the everyday.

Abstract:
In 1252 Geoffrey de Geneville married Matilda de Lacy, the elder coheiress of Meath and Weobley, thereby becoming lord of Trim in Ireland and Ludlow in the Welsh March. By birth, however, this second son of Simon, lord of Joinville, was the lord of Vaucouleurs in Champagne and was thus an ‘exotic’ figure to find involved in late thirteenth-century Ireland. While Geoffrey was not alone in being a landowner in Ireland with continental origins, since he was part of what Robert Bartlett calls the ‘aristocratic diaspora’ — the movement of western European aristocrats from their homelands into new areas where they settled in order to augment their fortunes — he was exceptional in that he was the most successful figure to emerge in Ireland as a result of Henry III’s tendency to invest foreigners from the court circle with lands in outlying areas. This pattern has been described as a policy by H. W. Ridgeway, who saw an intention to secure potentially troublesome border regions as one reason behind Henry’s distribution of peripheral patronage to ‘aliens’; and, indeed, Geoffrey numbered himself among the upright men of different nationalities placed in Ireland by the descendants of Henry II in order to bring the island to the obedience of the English king and to conserve the peace. The success that Geoffrey made of his grant of Trim related to the ‘secure nature’ of that particular lordship. However, that cannot be the whole story. There is no firm evidence that either William de Valence or Geoffrey de Lusignan, Henry III’s half-brothers, or the Savoyard knight Otto de Grandison, members of the Poitevin and Savoyard entourages of Henry III and the Lord Edward and the recipients of grants in the securely held areas of Wexford, Louth and Tipperary respectively, ever visited the lordship of Ireland in spite of their receipt of valuable lands there.

Abstract:
Nineteenth Century Literary Society is drawn from archive of the House of John Murray publishing company, held by the National Library of Scotland. The family-run firm, with Scottish roots, spanned seven generations and flourished in London from 1768 until 2002. John Murray is especially remarkable for publishing seminal English-language works of the 19th century, including those by Charles Darwin, David Livingstone, Charles Lyell, and Samuel Smiles, the father of self-help. The largest collection of Lord Byron’s private writings and manuscripts, assembled by the publisher, form a large part of the resource. Women writers feature prominently in the John Murray’s collection, including Jane Austen, Isabella Bird, Elizabeth Eastlake, and Caroline Lamb.

Abstract:
In 1891, Luther H. Gulik, a prominent member of the international leadership of the YMCA of the United States, established the triangle as the YMCA symbol. He saw the triangle as a symbol imbued with Christian beliefs that would become the spearhead of a worldwide missionary movement. About the Triangle, Gulik wrote:The triangle stands . . . for the symmetrical man, each part developed with reference to the whole, and not merely with reference to itself. . . . What authority have we for believing that this triangle idea is correct? It is scriptural. . . . Such statements as, “Thou shalt love the Lord Thy God with all they heart and soul and mind and strength,” indicate . . . the scriptural view . . . that the service of the Lord includes the whole man. The words, which in the Hebrew and Greek are translated “strength,” refer in both cases entirely to physical strength. As the YMCA International Committee's first secretary for athletic work (1889–1902), Gulik had strong reason to create a symbol that could be recognized anywhere in the world. He was a firm believer in the expanding Muscular Christianity movement, which glorified patriotic duty and manliness expressed through athletics, and a strong believer in the civilizing agency of missionary Protestantism as it sought to establish a United States Christian righteous empire.

Abstract:
Female writers use autobiography to express their experiences, deference, and inner-conflicts. They describe their connection to different events and people in domestic or social context to explain their feelings and complexity of their lives. This study analyzes the way Durrani constructs norms of gender and power in her autobiography, My Feudal Lord. The paper imports Searle’s theory of speech act analysis to discover the way the author creates and performs gender in the domain of power through textual interactions. Durrani achieves the effect of patriarchy through frequent use of directives, expressives, and commissives by her husband through employing direct language. The husband openly expresses criticism, blame, complain, and acknowledgement in his interactions which validate his authority over his wife. The striking feature of the wife’s speech is even more frequent use of directives as compared to the husband. However, the major gender distinction was reflected in the use of directives. The husband used more commands and the wife asked more questions. Another major difference was that of commissives which occurred half of the times in the wife’s speech as compared to her husband’s speech. She hardly used any apologies or compliments which shows her diminishing submission to her husband’s authority. Her expressives also reflect her firm attitude and courage to take risk of protesting against her physically and socially more powerful husband.

Hunt, Chris D. L. "GOOD FAITH PERFORMANCE IN CANADIAN CONTRACT LAW." Cambridge Law Journal 74, no. 1 (March 2015): 4–7. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0008197315000112.

Full text
Abstract:
IN Mellish v Motteux (1792) 170 E.R. 113, 157, Lord Kenyon observed that “in contracts of all kinds, it is of the highest importance that courts of law should compel the observance of honesty and good faith”. This passage echoes a similar statement by Lord Mansfield 25 years earlier in Carter v Boehm (1766) 97 E.R. 1162, 1910. Despite these early statements of principle, the modern common law has been notoriously hostile to the notion that contracting parties are under a general duty of good faith in the performance of their obligations (see W.P. Yee, “Protecting Parties' Reasonable Expectations: A General Principle of Good Faith” (2001) 1 Oxford U. Commonwealth L.J. 195), and there is certainly “no firm line of modern cases to support such an obligation” in English law (see L.E. Trakman and K. Sharma, “The Binding Force of Agreements to Negotiate in Good Faith” [2014] C.L.J. 598). Nevertheless, some recent decisions in Australia, Canada, and England have begun to imply obligations to perform certain types of promises, in certain classes of contracts, in an honest manner, crafting, in the words of Lord Bingham, “piecemeal solutions in response to piecemeal problems” (Interfoto Picture Library v Stiletto Visual Programmes Ltd. [1989] 1 QB 433, 439 (CA)). A recent English example is Yam Seng Pte Ltd. v International Trade Corporation Ltd. [2013] EWHC 111 (QB) in which Leggatt J. found there to be an implied duty of “honesty” and “fidelity to the bargain” in the context of a long-term distribution contract. Importantly, His Lordship emphasised that whether such obligations can be implied is a matter of construction, which involves ascertaining the parties' objective intentions through conventional techniques such as the principle of business efficacy. As implying such obligations depends entirely on the context of each contract (at paras [137]–[143]) there is, at present, no general principle of good faith performance in English contract law, despite some case-by-case recognition (see Mid-Essex Hospital Services N.H.S. Trust v Compass Group UK and Ireland Ltd. [2013] EWCA Civ 200, at [105], [150]).

Kekäläinen, Markku. "‘I felt a noble shock’: James Boswell in German Princely Courts." Sjuttonhundratal 10 (August 31, 2013): 87. http://dx.doi.org/10.7557/4.2622.

Full text
Abstract:
The article deals with James Boswell’s (1740–1795) attitudes towards the courtly milieu in the context of eighteenth-century British court discourse. The central argument is that, strongly contrary to the anti-court ethos of his intellectual and social milieu, Boswell had an affirmative and enthusiastic attitude towards the court. Moreover, the fact that he was neither an Addisonian moralist ‘spectator’ nor a cynical court aristocrat like Lord Chesterfield, but in many senses a highly affective ‘man of feeling’ of the age, did not diminish the uniqueness of his positive view of court culture. On the one hand, Boswell’s appreciation of the court was connected with his firm monarchism and belief in hereditary rank; on the other hand, he was aesthetically fascinated by the splendour and magnificence of the courtly milieu. His appraisal of the court did not include the common-sense moralism of the moral weeklies or the cynical observations of the aristocratic court discourse; rather his attitude was immediate, emotional, and enthusiastic in the spirit of the cult of sensibility.

Bayley, Christine, Christina Cheng, and Michael Lynch. "Pathological and Microbiological Study of Mortality in a Captive Breeding Colony of the Endangered Lord Howe Island Stick Insect (Dryococelus australis)." Veterinary Pathology 55, no. 5 (April 16, 2018): 719–30. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/0300985818766210.

Full text
Abstract:
The authors describe pathological and microbiological features of mortalities in a captive breeding colony of Lord Howe Island stick insects ( Dryococelus australis) over a period of 18 months. There were 2 peaks of mortality in this period. In the first, insects presented dead with minimal premonitory signs of illness. In the second, affected insects were ataxic with contracted limbs and inability to climb or right themselves. Gross lesions were uncommon but included pigmented plaques on the gut and cloacal prolapse. Histological lesions in both outbreaks indicated a cellular innate immune response including nodulation characterized by Gram-negative bacterial bacilli entrapped within nodules of pigmented hemocytes, and melanization characterized by melanin within hemocyte nodules and around bacteria. Hemolymph culture findings varied and often yielded a mixed growth. Pure growth of Serratia marcescens was cultured in 44% of animals in Outbreak 1, while pure growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was cultured in 30% of animals in Outbreak 2. Cases with S. marcescens-positive culture often showed inflammation at the foregut-midgut junction. The frequency of mixed bacterial culture results did not allow firm conclusions about causality to be made, and may indicate primary bacterial infection or increased susceptibility to hemolymph colonization with an opportunistic pathogen. These findings highlight the utility of histopathology combined with ancillary testing when investigating mortality in captive insect colonies.

Abstract:
Indonesian Madrasah Competence Assessment (AKMI) is a national assessment implemented each year held by the Ministry of Religious Affairs. One of the uniqueness of the AKMI is the use of different tests every year. AKMI focuses on capturing the development of learning in Madrasa by comparing the test scores of the current year with the previous year. An equating process is crucial for valid results when comparing scores. Therefore, this research aims to (a) equate the scientific literacy assessment tools at AKMI in 2022 with 2023 and (b) evaluate the business process of developing AKMI scientific literacy instruments (along with the MSAT design), which has implications for the equating process. This study adopted a Non-Equivalent Anchor Test (NEAT) design because the two test sets were parallel years, and the participants were from a diverse population. The data is from the AKMI Science Literacy of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, with 303,987 participants in 2022 and 342,987 in 2023 from the Islamic elementary school level. A total of 674 scientific literacy instrument items in 2022 and 1,392 items in 2023, with 90 items used as anchor items. There are 3 stages of analysis: pre-equalization, equalization calibration, and post-equalization analysis. The results show that there are differences in item parameter estimation results between 2022 and 2023, where 2022 has a higher level of item difficulty. Furthermore, the Stocking-Lord and Haebara methods had proven to be effective and had produced estimates with minimal differences in the equating process. In addition, the anchor items used as the basis for the equating do not represent the items as a whole in the item pool. These findings indicate the need for firm, careful standardization based on psychometric principles of the process at AKMI, from developing items to assembling items, testing, determining anchor items, and assembling items in the MSAT application.

That we may freely and consistently persevere in our intention … we will that … all and each of ours shall make a vow never to seek directly or indirectly nor to allow others to seek … that except the Chief Pontiff to whom alone we humbly beg to be subject, any religious order whatsoever or any person whomsoever or any bishop or any one else appointed by the Pope to visit us, should have us so committed to his charge as to exercise over us authority, power, or jurisdiction.(Memorial of Mary Ward, translated from the Latin original, Archivum Romanum Societatis Jesu, Anglia 31, 11, pp. 675-685).The above are strong words, even from a forthright Yorkshirewoman, and they are almost startling when one considers how submissive, personally, was their author to all authority in the Church. But, in this Memorial, Mary Ward describes the constitution she envisages for her Institute. The firm lines she draws are even more accentuated in her Third Plan of 1622: ‘We most humbly beg that the entire hierarchical structure of this work should depend entirely on the Holy See and not on any other authority’. Another document headed Reasons why we may not alter makes it clear that the proposals admit of no compromise. The genesis of this attitude is not far to seek. Mary Ward considered she had received divine intimation that she was to undertake some new work to the greater glory of God and for this she was to follow St. Ignatius’ Society of Jesus with its direct responsibility to the Holy See. Sr. Immolata Wetter points out that Mary Ward’s ideas were further sharpened by the contemporary situation of the Catholic Church in England: ‘adherence to the primacy of the Pope distinguished the English martyrs and confessors of the faith. For their loyalty to the Vicar of Christ these brave men and women suffered restrictions both in public and private life.

Young people are the next generation in the family, church and nation. Young people are the foundation and the next generation of churches that must be nurtured well. The future of the church lies in the younger generation who will replace the parents, to continue the ministry in the church so that the church continues to thrive. However, young people today have less obedience and loyalty to God, so that in defending their faith in the Lord Jesus is very difficult. Because of the lack of spiritual guidance as a foundation in their lives to fortify every temptation or offer of the world that makes their faith lost. Parents and the church are very important in the growth of their faith. If young people have a good spirituality, have a close relationship with God, then he also must have firm faith and can maintain his faith in the Lord Jesus.

Abstract:
William Pitt the Younger died in 1806 but had a long afterlife in political argument. Historians have argued that a reactionary cult of Pitt in early nineteenth-century toryism died with Catholic emancipation, but this article suggests that invocation of Pitt's character was more widespread and durable, because linked to the assertion and defence of party identities. Whig hostility to Pitt remained strong even in the middle of the nineteenth century. Lord John Russell attacked his character flaws to celebrate the continued vigour and distinctness of Foxite political culture within the Liberal party. Conversely, use of Pitt in argument about what the tory party should be like did not end with reform. In the 1830s, traditional celebration of Pitt as a stern opponent of revolutionary agitation survived within a supposedly moderate conservatism. In Peel's second administration, arguments about whether Pitt had been firm or flexible, liberal or intransigent, reflected and added to disputes about how much religious and economic liberalism Peel should endorse. It was schism between Peelites and protectionists, the article suggests, which broke the clear link between celebration of Pitt's character and one party, allowing a more wide-ranging, because less politically charged, appreciation of Pitt to develop.

During combustion of the nitrocellulose film, a significant amount of the toxic gases is released at the initial stage of the fire. This complicates the safe evacuation of film and photo storage personnel. The exact qualitative and quantitative composition of toxicants is unknown. Therefore, the assessment of the toxicity of combustion products of the above film is an urgent task. The purpose of the study is to experimentally determine the specific formation coefficients and partial density of the most hazardous toxic gases released during nitrocellulose film combustion. Modernization of a small-sized experimental setup was conducted, which allows to estimate the phosgene concentration. The composition of the film combustion products was experimentally studied. Experimental methods were are used for measuring and processing the combustion parameters of substances and materials, as well as the methods for analyzing the results obtained. During the experiments, the partial densities and specific formation coefficients of carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, phosgene, and nitrogen dioxide were obtained. Hydrogen cyanide and phosgene were found to be the most hazardous toxicants. The maximum weight is estimated related to the film placed in a room of a given volume, at which the partial densities of carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, phosgene and nitrogen dioxide do not reach the critical values for humans. The results obtained will allow expanding the database of combustible load on the specific coefficients of formation of the above compounds, which is used in the calculation of fire risks in the storage of film and photographic documents. During combustion of the nitrocellulose film as the most hazardous combustible load in these rooms, it is necessary to consider the time of blocking escape routes by carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, phosgene, and nitrogen dioxide.

Abstract:
Work and communication are two basic human that determine how humans as a species move and live in their world. The reformation begins with two basic human foundations. Jurgen Habermas, a German authoritarian who makes a fairly firm discount with his predecessors, seems to be in his central idea of the fundamental differences between the two dimensional praxis, namely work and communication. But it needs to be seen how communication and rationality of power are exercised, or how one positions in it. In the public space, each individual expresses his or her various thoughts related to the public interest that want to be discussed without coercion. This public space must be free from the intervention of any party, so that each individual can express his or her thoughts freely and openly. That's where a social area free from censorship and dominance. The complexity of people’s lives demands a more transformative movement of da’wah activities, in this case communication and transformative da’wah. This process also aims to "pay attention" to the target of da’wah to the weak. As coveted by the Islamic community, that not only focused on homogeneous social status, nor looked at the higher and lower social status, officials and subordinates, rich and poor, and so on. Rather, it sees from the level of laughter of an individual to his Lord. To achieve this, preachers need to emphasize an approach that better respects and respects human dignity and dignity, humanizes people, and uses local cultural approaches and the unstoppable use of information technology as a tool to transform a message.

Early childhood must also learn to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit in every action, so that children act honestly and righteously before God and others. The help of the Holy Spirit in the lives of early childhood will make the child aware of the function of the Holy Spirit as a helper. So that children will always come to God to ask for the help of the Holy Spirit. Third. Knowing Salvation, early childhood is taught to recognize the salvation carried out by Jesus who died on the cross to atone for the sins of all believers including the sins of early childhood, so that early childhood knows and understands that only through Jesus can get salvation. A vertical tandem positioned twin roll caster and an unequal diameter twin roll caster were used in this study. Factors which affected the connecting of the strips in the fabrication using a roll caster were investigated. They were influences of oxide film, roll-load (separating force) and temperature of a strip. In the clad-strip casting by the roll caster, the connecting could be operated before the oxide film became firmly. Mn was useful element to prevent the oxidation. The roll-load could break the oxide film existed on the strip surface. Prevention of the occurrence of the oxide film was important to make strip connecting condition firm. In the casting of the clad strip using an unequal diameter twin roll caster, strips did not contact to the atomosphere before connecting.

The scholars become more focused on the importance of the non-formal rules determining the nature of the intra-firm relations. This article attempts to justify theoretically the applicability of the feudalism categories to the analysis of the hierarchical management structure in the modern industrial enterprise, as well as to define the ways to overcome the negative implications of the intra-firm feudalism. Methodologically, the research is based on the provisions of the A.A. Bogdanov’s general organizations science. The article justifies the in-house system of relationships, which, in fact, correlates with the fundamental characteristics of the feudal relationships. This system of non-formal relations affects the approved managerial decisions, determines the nature and goals of the structural units of the industrial enterprise. It is shown that the nature of these non-formal relationships shapes the long-term resilience of the firm. The article looks at how the in-house departments obtain the elements of quasi-feudal power by controlling the functional levels of the firm – physical (control over the main assets), distribution (control over the material, labor, and energy resources), economic (impact on the cash flows), and design and technological (impact on the strategic development and firm’s technologies). The main reason for the intra-firm feudalism is the difference in opinions among the top managers of the firms and its employees, which, in its turn, is caused by different assets circulation periods – the main means of manufacturing and labor. It is claimed that information asymmetry inherent to the hierarchical structure is the indispensable condition for the intra-firm feudalism. In-house feudalization amplifies when a particular employee and its department acquire specific capital, including experience, knowledge about the manufacturing technologies, ties with colleagues and outside subjects, etc. It is justified that economy digitalization changes the composition and the structure of the feudal lords’ powers, while the scales of intra-firm feudalism manifestations do not change. To counteract the firm’s feudalization, the article proposes measures, including dismissal of the feudal lords and destruction of feuds, delegation of the design and technological powers from the feudal lords to the personnel, blurring the feudal lords’ powers, changing the business conditions for feuds, changes of the hierarchical structure in the firm. It is noted that the intra-firm feudalism can be restrained by setting up a new intra-firm unit – General Council of Employees empowered with design and technological rights with the level inversely proportional to the intra-firm feudal lords’ power level. Therefore, higher level of powers given to the firm’s employees will restrain the powers of the intra-firm feudal lords. Further research is seen to be connected with the assessment of the hypothesis concerning the development of the intra-firm feudalism in particular industrial enterprises.

Abstract:
PurposeThis study examines the relationships among trust, commitment, logistics outsourcing relationship quality (LORQ), relationship satisfaction, strategy alignment and logistics performance considering selected manufacturing firms in a developing country, Uganda.Design/methodology/approachDrawing on insights from the commitment-trust theory and strategy alignment literature, and using a cross-sectional survey design with a self-administered questionnaire, and applying the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach to analyze quantifiable data obtained from managers of 103 manufacturing firms in Uganda outsourcing logistics operations, the study examined the logistics performance effects of trust, through commitment, LORQ and relationship satisfaction.FindingsThe study findings reveal that trust influences logistics performance, indirectly through its effects on commitment, LORQ and relationship satisfaction, sequentially, and that the positive effects of relationship satisfaction on logistics performance strengthen with improvements in LORQ. Strategy alignment exerted a strong positive influence on LORQ.Research limitations/implicationsThe study findings have important implications for theory development and literature. The study applies the commitment-trust view to both theoretically and empirically examine logistics outsourcing as a competitive strategy to enhance logistics performance, and thereby providing a theoretical base for future research. However, this research is confined to manufacturing firms in Uganda, and the results are not necessarily generalizable to other contexts.Practical implicationsThe study findings provide insights for logistics managers regarding the role of trust, commitment, LORQ, relationship satisfaction and strategy alignment in enabling successful logistics outsourcing relationships, and how drawing on these, managers can improve firm logistics performance.Originality/valueThis study contributes to logistics management literature by empirically examining the relationship of trust, commitment, LORQ, relationship satisfaction and strategy alignment with logistics performance, considering manufacturing firms in a developing country, where these aspects have not been largely explored before. It highlights the need to build trust, promote greater commitment of logistics user firms in logistics outsourcing relationships as well as aligning logistics outsourcing strategies to improve LORQ and enhance logistics performance. Additionally, the study provides for the first-time new evidence for the moderation effect of LORQ on the influence of relationship satisfaction on logistics performance. The study findings suggest advancing further scholarly discussions on logistics outsourcing as a critical strategy to enhance firm logistics performance within a developing country context. Due to limitations in logistics infrastructure, and existing low-level technologies, logistics in developing countries still revolves around conventional materials handling, packaging, inventory and transportation operations, and logistics outsourcing is new, thereby presenting an interesting research context for empirical investigations on logistics in general, and logistics outsourcing in particular.

Abstract:
This paper attempts to estimate the maintenance cost of water pollution abatement measures to the Indian industry using the methodology of distance function in the theory of production. The distance function is estimated using both programming and stochastic frontier models for a sample of water polluting industries in India. The firm-specific shadow prices for pollutants, measures of efficiency, and scale economies are estimated. Estimates show that on average the cost to the Indian industry for reducing one ton of BOD and COD are respectively, Rs 0.246 and 0.077 million. Large differences in the estimates of firm-specific shadow prices of pollutants reflect the use of inefficient water pollution abatement technologies. The relationships between firm-specific shadow prices or marginal costs of abatement of BOD and COD and the index of compliance (ratio of effluent load to sale value) and the pollution load reductions obtained confirm the earlier empirical results of studies on water pollution abatement in Indian industries. The earlier studies have found increasing marginal costs with respect to reductions in pollution concentrations and decreasing marginal cost with respect to the pollution loads reduced by the firms.

Abstract:
Pakistan’s textile industry is suffering from an electricity shortage and political turmoil. Due to a state of instability in which nothing is certain, things cannot be brought into balance by the state. Therefore, we employ firm-level data (101) to investigate the impact of expected and unexpected power outages on textile firm productivity throughout 2014 to 2019. The study assesses the importance of political stability for the flourishing of Pakistan’s textile sector. Outages were found to significantly negatively impact textile sector sales revenue, likely leading to lower results (by 0.240% and 0.0569%). The duration and frequency of outages had significant adverse influences on reducing firm revenue. It has been estimated that a 1 h outage will cause to loss of revenue of approximately 24 percent. Comparatively, load-shedding hours had a smaller impact on lowering firms’ sales revenues, which were 5% to 8% with and without political stability inclusion. Further, outage hours decreased the export of textiles by 0.286%. The magnitude of export reduction by outages and load shedding was higher. The driving impact of political stability was higher than the impacts of expected and unexpected shortages. A stable political system is necessary to develop feasible solutions.

Abstract:
This article discusses the artist, filmmaker, and writer Lana Lin’s “revisioning” of Audre Lorde’s The Cancer Journals (1980) to consider how the poetic encounter between two artists from different generations exemplifies the relational praxis that Lorde pursued throughout her life. In revealing the ways in which Lorde opens acoustic sensory spaces for contemporary readers and listeners of her work, I specifically focus on the political and aesthetic dynamic of recitation in Lin’s experimental documentary The Cancer Journals Revisited (2018). I trace how recitation becomes a coalitional practice of feminist chorus through which readers and listeners embody the sonorous space they co-create through and with Lorde. The article further looks into the ways Lin pairs recitation performance with visceral images of body parts on the screen to argue that the film’s visuals dwell in and extend the form of the chorus; which is to say, the film expands the meaning and practice of chorus beyond the realm of the sonic. The bodies on the screen extend the chorus, immersing the audience in a participatory rethinking of the experience of cancer (particularly breast cancer) not merely as an individual misfortune or an aesthetic concern. In adjoining textual, visual, and acoustic elements, Lin’s film provides a powerful transformative sensory environment, reverberating through the reciters and the audience.

Abstract:
Forest fires are one of the factors that contribute to climate change, among the components that form the fire triangle, fuel is theonly factor that can be manipulated. The objective of this work was to estimate the load of forest fuels in Mg ha-¹ in an area burnedin 2015 and another area without fire. For the evaluation of forest fuel, three sampling sites were established in each of the areas, the woody material was counted by delay time (1, 10, 100 and 1000 h) according to the technique of planar intersections; at the endof each line, litter (h) and mulch (m) were collected in 0.09 m². Tests were carried out to contrast the general fuel load and by typebetween ecosystems; Tukey's means comparison test was used to contrast the fuels in a given area, finally the woody material (ml),mulch (m) and litter (h) were correlated with the total load (ct), litter depth (ph) and mulch depth (ph) using Pearson correlationtests. The total fuel load was 53.10 Mg ha-¹ in the burned area, while the area without fire showed a load of 27.26 Mg ha-¹ withoutsignificant differences (p = 0.114). On the comparison of loads by delay time, the fuel of 1, 10 and 100 h showed a higher load inthe burned area, although it was not significant (p > 0.05); the analysis by component showed a higher litter load in the non-burnedarea with 12.90 Mg ha-¹ (p = 0.015) and the woody material was statistically higher in the burned area with 35.95 Mg ha-¹ (p =0.024). The correlation of variables showed an r = 0.95 between the woody material and the total load; followed by leaf litter andmulch (r = 0.80); on the contrary, the total load in the non-burned area showed a correlation with the mulch and leaf litter (r = 0.89and 0.83). The forest fire contributed to the reduction of litter and mulch but maximized the load of woody fuel.

Abstract:
Ecranisation is a process of finding out the difference between a novel and a film. One of the novels that has been adapted into a film is Lord of the Flies. Furthermore, this research aims to reveal the process of ecranisation between the novel Lord of the Flies (1954) and its film adaptation Lord of the Flies (1990) by William Golding. How are the differences between the novel Lord of the Flies (1954) and its film adaptation Lord of the Flies (1990). In analyzing, the writers use the theory of Ecranisation (1991) from Pamusuk Eneste which is divided into three processes, namely reduction, addition and variation. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach aimed at describing the phenomenon and its characteristics. The data is collected qualitatively by examining them throughout to get relevant issues and ideas and classify them. The results of the analysis reveal that in the film Lord of the Flies (1990), there is a narrowing and expansion of the original storyline, namely the novel Lord of the Flies (1954). This is because it does not take much time when presenting the story of the novel. The writers finds that the ecranisation process that occurs in Lord of the Flies does not change the core of the story, but only refine and beautify the story's fabric. Key words: Ecranisation, Eneste, Lord of the Flies (1954) novel, Lord of the Flies (1990) film

Abstract:
When restoring wedge-shaped tooth defects, the adhesive system, and in particular, its microhardness provided by an inorganic filler plays a significant role in withstanding the masticatory load. The conic flow point is a measure for the microhardness of spatially-stitched polymer matrices and depends on the nature, structure, density of the polymer chains. The purpose of this work is to compare the properties of analogues: the Conic Flow Point of 5th DC Adhesive NF Adhesive Systems (Dental Central) and the 7th Single Bond (3M ESPE) by using Heppler consistometer under laboratory conditions. The study was carried out on adhesive plates manufactured directly in the laboratory before testing. The samples were divided into two groups depending on the adhesive system used: 10 samples of 5 generations (DC Adhesive NF, Dental Center) and 10 samples of 7 generations (Single bond Universal 3M ESPE). To obtain specimens of adhesive systems of 3.0 ± 0.2 mm high, a metallic mould covered with silicone was used. On the back side of the mould we put a sheet of lavsan film, turned the mould upside-down, then put the adhesive into the mould and covered with lavsan film. Then this sample was irradiated with a photopolymerizer for 40 seconds. Without removing the film, the sample was turned over and its other side was irradiated for 40 seconds. Then we peel off the film and take out finished sample from the mould. Prior to testing, samples were kept in distilled water at a temperature of (37 ± 2) ºC for 24 hours. According to relevant literature data and research data reported by 3M ESPE and Dental Central firms, no studies for assessing conic flow point by using Heppler consistometer for 5th and 7th generation adhesives were carried put under laboratory conditions. Out test results have demonstrated the regularity that the harder an adhesive is, the higher values of the conical flow point. That is, the adhesive can withstand a load that is positive for retorting cervical defects. Thus, the restoration of wedge-shaped defects requires a competent and differentiated approach to the choice of adhesive system in order to obtain positive results and to avert spreading of pathological process that ensured the treatment efficacy. The use of 5th generation AD Adhesive NF promotes the formation of a complete hybrid layer, firm bonding between composite material, dentin and enamel, provides effective sealing at the edge of filling margins with dental tissues and their resistance due to adhesive ductility: all this guarantees the durability of the restorations performed.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the influence of different dimensions of corporate governance quality on the valuation of non-financial firms listed in the STOXX® Europe 600 index over a period from 2012 to 2017. Instead of using a single governance measure that may cause biased estimates, we seek to capture a more holistic perspective on corporate governance. Therefore, we recreate a set of the most frequently cited governance scores in the literature on a common database and carry out a principal component analysis to identify similarities between the scores. Results reveal that our corporate governance scores load on two general factors that we identify to represent internal and external governance quality. After constructing composite governance measures for each of these factors, we find that external (internal) governance is positively (negatively) linked with firm valuation when applying both fixed effects and IV regressions to account for endogeneity. Our findings imply that subsequent studies on the governance-firm value relationship need to include proxies for both external and internal corporate governance quality.

Abstract:
With knowledge and expertise increasingly being recognized as important, firms have made significant investments in document repositories as part of their knowledge management initiatives. Document repositories are intended to enhance the ability to access codified knowledge and help improve task performance through knowledge reuse. However, it is not clear what effects they have on how knowledge workers perform their tasks. Using longitudinal data on repository accesses and calls to technical support by field technicians in an engineering firm, we examine how just-in-time access to codified knowledge affects patterns of help-seeking from technical support. We find evidence that greater accessing of codified knowledge reduces calls for help to technical support. The type of codified knowledge accessed from the repository affects field technicians’ calling behavior. Accessing general knowledge reduces calls to support for low-complexity problems, while accessing procedural knowledge reduces calls related to high-complexity problems. Further, accessing procedural knowledge is significantly associated with promotion, suggesting that the use of document repositories can help individuals build firm-specific human capital. Building on the insights of cognitive load theory, this study suggests that making information available just in time through document repositories reduces the cognitive load involved for task performance and enables learning. This work contributes to a greater understanding of the value of knowledge management systems and suggests that, beyond the efficiencies gained from knowledge reuse, just-in-time access to knowledge repositories builds problem solving capabilities and contributes to human capital development.

Abstract:
It has been over a century since the interest in inventing the optimal topology for bearings arose. A significant achievement was published by Lord Rayleigh, who found the step-bearing geometry which maximise the load-carrying capacity when the classical Reynolds equation is used to model thin film flow of an iso-viscous and incompressible fluid. Since then, new optimisation methods considering some variants of governing equations for finding the best possible bearings have surfaced, one of which will be presented in this paper. Here, two different formulations for compressible flow, i.e. ideal gas and constant bulk modulus compressibility, as well as the classical Reynolds formulation will be used in combination with the method of moving asymptotes for topological optimisation. All three of these problem formulations provide us with unique geometries, which either maximise the load-carrying capacity or minimise friction, for fluids with a wide variety of compressibility.

Abstract:
The LoRa-based forest fire monitoring method by using wireless type networks is an IoT system designed to detect and prevent forest fires. The system consists of sensor nodes which are deployed throughout the forest to monitor various environmental conditions such as humidity, temperature, wind speed and direction. These sensor nodes are equipped with LoRa radios that enable them to communicate wirelessly with a central gateway. The Gateway gathers the data from the sensor nodes and transmits it to a server in the cloud for processing and analysis. The system utilizes machine learning algorithms to analyse the collected data and detect any anomalies that may indicate the forest fire. In the event of a fire, the system can alert local authorities and fire departments, providing them with real-time information about the location and severity of the fire. This allows for faster response times and more efficient management of the fire. The LoRa-based forest fire prevention system using wireless networks offers several advantages over traditional forest fire detection systems. Its low-power, long-range capabilities enable it to cover large areas, making it ideal for monitoring vast forested areas. Additionally, its wireless connectivity eliminates the need for physical infrastructure such as cables, which can be expensive and time-consuming to install. Overall, the LoRa-based forest fire prevention system using wireless networks is a promising solution for preventing and managing forest fires. Its innovative use of IoT technology and machine learning algorithms can help to reduce the impact of forest fires and protect both human life and the environment.

Abstract:
A strain gauge made of thick-film resistors has a great potential for use in civil engineering owing to its relatively high voltage sensitivity, stability, low production cost, and long-term service capacities. However, a persistent drawback of strain gauges is their thermal sensitivity. To address this problem, it is advisable to propose and manufacture a strain gauge made of thick film resistors that do not sense low temperatures. This paper makes a close look into the effects of resistor paste components and baking temperature on the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of a thick-film resistor. Thick film resistors made from RuO2 concentrations from 10 wt% to 30 wt% baked at different temperatures on an Al2O3 substrate, have been investigated. The relationship between resistor resistance, TCR and scale factor (GF) has been subject for studies. Findings show that TCR rises with an increase of the RuO2 concentration and baking temperature. Near the minimum (Tmin) of the resistance-temperature curve, the temperature has the least effect on the resistance value, and a thick-film resistor can be considered insensitive to temperature in a certain range. The ratio of TCR to GF and Tmin depends on the film resistance of thick film resistors. By varying the concentration of the conductive phase and the baking temperature, the film resistance of thick-film resistors can be controlled, and low-temperature strain gauges can be achieved for different ambient temperatures.

Abstract:
A combustible material is one of fire hazard where the amount of combustible materials or fire load could affect the heat release and fire severity in enclosure. The fire severity in the context of fire load is related to intensity and duration of fire in enclosure. Fire load survey is conducted in this study to estimate the amount of combustible materials in wholesale premise since it become threat to life safety and property loss. The determinations of fire load in 3-storey wholesale premise in Kuantan city is conducted by using combination fire load survey method; weighing and inventory method. Result from fire load survey can help to determine the sufficient requirements of fire suppression in premise as well as fire fighters intervention strategy. An extension of this study, the data could be used as an important input to design fire for deterministic analysis in fire risk assessment to quantify the level of fire risk towards life, property and environment.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine how information load, consumers’ regulatory focus, and prior attitudes interact to influence consumers’ response to firm crisis in the context of online discussion forum. By doing this, this study presents the solving strategy for unintended criticism in online space. Design/methodology/approach – Based on selective exposure and regulatory focus theory, the author proposes that consumers’ regulatory focus and prior attitudes toward a focal firm influence the relationship between information load and selective exposure phenomenon. The data for this study are obtained from an experimental research design. Data were collected from 165 college students who have an experience with an online discussion forum. Findings – The author finds that selective exposure is likely to occur when information load is high (vs low). More importantly, this selective exposure is influenced by regulatory focus. Prevention-focussed consumers with favorable (vs unfavorable) prior attitudes toward the target firm tend to evaluate it less favorably, whereas promotion-focussed consumers with unfavorable (vs favorable) prior attitudes are likely to evaluate it more favorably when information load is high. Originality/value – Evidence is found that consumers’ regulatory focus moderates the effect of information quantity on confirmatory information search, and induces different response strategies to firm crisis information.

Abstract:
We introduce firm solar forecasts as a strategy to operate optimally overbuilt solar power plants in conjunction with optimally sized storage systems so as to make up for any power prediction errors, and hence entirely remove load balancing uncertainty emanating from grid-connected solar fleets. A central part of this strategy is the plant overbuilding that we term implicit storage. We show that strategy, while economically justifiable on its own account, is an effective entry step to achieving least-cost ultra-high solar penetration where firm power generation will be a prerequisite. We demonstrate that in the absence of an implicit storage strategy, ultra-high solar penetration would be vastly more expensive. Using the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) as a case study, we determine current and future costs of firm forecasts for a comprehensive set of scenarios in each ISO electrical region, comparing centralized vs. decentralized production and assessing load flexibility’s impact. We simulate the growth of the strategy from firm forecast to firm power generation. We conclude that ultra-high solar penetration enabled by the present strategy, whereby solar would firmly supply the entire NYISO load, could be achieved locally at electricity production costs comparable to current NYISO wholesale market prices.

Abstract:
A fuel survey was carried out at all operating CANDU reactors in Canada in 5 sites (Bruce A, Bruce B, Darlington, Pickering, and Point Lepreau). The survey used the National Fire Protection Association 557 combination method for the fire zones that contain fire safe shutdown analysis equipment. A fire zone group list for the sites was developed to combine fire zones with similar functions; 38 fire zone groups were produced from this exercise. The results of the survey show that the average fuel load density for all 1230 fire zones is 170.1 MJ/m2, and the average fuel load is 79 183 MJ. The maximum fuel load density is 1319 MJ/m2, and the maximum fuel load is 2 785 404 MJ. High-energy arcing faults risk was found in 254 fire zones out of the 1230 fire zones. Electric fault is the highest ignition source risk present in all 1230 fire zones.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to study the load capacity of nanoparticles-laden gas film (NLGF) in thrust bearing. Design/methodology/approach – SiO2 nanoparticles were added into gas to form an NLGF. The nanoparticles volume fraction in the film was controlled by a vibrator. The film thickness and the film pressure were measured by a micro cantilever displacement sensor and a membrane pressure sensor, respectively. The total load that makes the film thickness keeping constant was quantified, and then, the film load capacity was obtained. Findings – The investigation shows that nanoparticles can enlarge the film load capacity remarkably; even a little amount of nanoparticles (0.01 per cent) could lead to a sharp rise. With the increase of nanoparticles volume fraction, load capacity increases. However, the increment of load capacity decreases gradually. In addition, the film pressure variation proves the enhancement effect of nanoparticles on the film load capacity. Research limitations/implications – The paper is restricted to the findings based on NLGF, which is formed by dispersing SiO2 nanoparticles in gas film as an additive. The experimental results are applicable within the range of nanoparticles volume fraction of 0.01-0.33 per cent. Originality/value – The fact that nanoparticles could enlarge the gas film load capacity is verified by experiment for the first time. This study reveals the corresponding relation between nanoparticles volume fraction and the film load capacity.

Abstract:
Load requirements in ANSI Standard A58.1.1982 appearing in the LRFD Specification for Structural Steel Buildings are selected, whenever possible, using probabilistic load combination analysis and structural reliability theory. The occurrence of a fire with the potential to cause severe structural damage is a rare event in comparison to events giving rise to design-basis load effects. Although probabilistic load modeling techniques reveal that a structure likely is loaded to only a fraction of its design load when a fire occurs, steel structural assemblies normally are fire tested while loaded to the full nominal design load. This paper presents an improved methodology for determining loads and load combinations for use in fire-resistant structural design. The basic methodology is illustrated by determining load combinations involving fire and live loads for limit states design and for use with the standard ASTM E119 fire test. A reduced nominal live load combined with the structural action due to fire apparently provides a load combination that is risk-consistent with other currently accepted load combinations. The method is consistent with the limit states design approaches under development or in use in Europe that recognize the influence of load on fire resistance of steel structures, and is compatible with the LRFD philosophy.

Abstract:
Fire load exists in the building, and it is generally not the origin of fire occurred and spread, so attention has not been beloved paid although the fire size is closely related with it. It plays an important role in performance-based fireproof design, but the abroad data is used always, then which is not in accordance to the situation of our country. The article is based on national and international standards, and calculated the fire load theoretical maximum of the building to protect the building fire safety and can be referred by performance-based fireproof designer, so we can control the fire dangerous of the building, and then grasp the critical moment while the fire happened.
