Abstract:
ABSTRACT: This is a comparative and analytical work of J.R.R. Tolkien literary trilogy The Lord of the Rings as well as the cinematographic production of Peter Jackson forty years after the publication of the books. The goal is to demonstrate that though a film adaptation will never replace the original literary work, it can be, however, its visual compliment or extension. Equally important, is the study of the organised fans and fandom, the publicity, marketing and film franchise that involves an online publicity andglobal release in a new cinematographic era for mass audiences.

Abstract:

Sammanfattning: The Lord of The Rings-trilogin slog världen med storm då första filmen kom ut år 2001.

Abstract:
The main objective of this research was to study the buckling and post-buckling response of axially restrained beam-columns under thermal loading. Also the effects of slenderness ratios on pre-buckling and post-buckling behavior which is neglected in AISC specification was examined. The results of this study indicate that: a) Both the deflection and end moment amplification factors are significantly smaller for the restrained beam-columns subjected to temperature increase than the corresponding unrestrained beam-columns subjected to (mechanical) axial loads. b) The deflection amplification factors tend to decrease with decreasing ratio of end moments. However, reverse seems to occur for the moment amplification factors and as the moment amplification factors tend to increase with decreasing moment ratio particularly in the pre-buckling and the initial post-buckling range (0.1 < T/Tcr < 1.5). c) The thermal amplification factors tend to be smaller than the AISC values even in the pre-buckling range with those for the slender beam-columns significantly smaller than those for the shorter beam-columns.

Abstract:
"The objective of this thesis is to examine the methods of barrier analysis used in the Building Fire Safety Engineering Method (BFSEM), and to develop the areas of the analysis which currently rely almost exclusively on subjective judgment rather than quantitative measures. The use of the Normalized Heat Load to quantify heat energy impact on a barrier is examined in detail. Procedures are developed which apply the properties of a normal statistical distribution to barrier failures times, for use in simplifying the construction of barrier catalog curves. A framework is also developed to help standardize the selection of barrier effectiveness factors. Finally, this thesis outlines the procedure for developing barrier performance curves to allow easy implementation of the barrier analysis into the general framework of the BFSEM. A design example is presented to illustrate the analysis procedures."

Abstract:

In this paper, I present a framework for implementing level of detail (LOD) for a 3d physically based fire rendering running on the GPU. While realistic fire rendering that runs in real time exists, it is generally not used in real-time applications such as game, due to the high cost of running such a rendering. Most research into the rendering of fire is only concerned with the fire itself, and not how it can best be included in larger scenes with a multitude of other complex objects. I present methods for increasing the efficiency of a physically based fire rendering without harming its visual quality, by dynamically adjusting the detail level of the fire according to its importance for the current view. I adapt and use methods created both for LOD and for other areas to alter the detail level of the visualization and simulation of a fire rendering. The desired detail level is calculated by evaluating certain conditions such as visibility and distance from the viewpoint, and then used to adjust the detail level of the visualization and simulation of the fire. The implementation of the framework could not be completed in time, but a number of tests were run to determine the effect of the different methods used. These results indicate that by making adjustments to the simulation and visualization of the fire, large boosts in performance are gained without significantly harming the visual quality of the fire rendering.

Le, Heron Erena. "Making film-landscapes and exploring the geographical resonances of The Lord of the Rings and Whale Rider." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2008. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14936/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores film resonances and film-landscape interactions. Film resonances refer to the multiple and varied ways people respond to films. Film-landscape describes the interaction between film and people's experience of landscape, containing a notion that landscape is always-in-the-making. Film resonances and film-landscape . interactions are explored in the contemporary New Zealand context, focusing on The Lord of the Rings and Whale Rider. The thesis explores film resonances at several levels: analysing film-tours in terms of film-landscape interactions; exploring how the same films have different resonances and reactions in different places; interrogating the relationship between popular, government and business responses to films; and examining the relationship between film and national identity narratives. Together, The Lord of the Rings and Whale Rider can be used as a prism through which to highlight particular elements ofthe New Zealand contemporary moment. A multiple method approach is used, including in-depth interviews, focus groups, conversational interviews, participant observation and analysis of newspaper articles and internet movie databases. This thesis adds to and extends current literature by considering The Lord of the Rings and Whale Rider with a more-than-film approach. It draws on a mixture of theories, arguing that considered separately, current literature does not fully address the potential of film-landscape and film resonances. Through a more-than-film approach, the thesis engages with film resonances and film-landscape interactions in ways that acknowledge the work film does outside of production or viewing. The thesis will also be of interest to all those concerned with the power of film and how it has the potential to influence our landscapes, our imaginations and our identities.

Bisha, James Victor. "Correlation of the Elastic Properties of Stretch Film on Unit Load Containment." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27992.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to correlate the applied material properties of stretch film with its elastic properties measured in a laboratory setting. There are currently no tools available for a packaging engineer to make a scientific decision on how one stretch film performs against another without applying the film. The system for stretch wrap comparison is mostly based on trial and error which can lead to a significant loss of product when testing a new film or shipping a new product for the first time. If the properties of applied stretch film could be predicted using a tensile test method, many different films could be compared at once without actually applying the film, saving time and money and reducing risk. The current method for evaluating the tensile properties of stretch film advises the user apply a hysteresis test to a standard sample size and calculate several standard engineering values. This test does not represent how the material is actually used. Therefore, a new tensile testing method was developed that considers the film gauge (thickness) and its prestretch. The results of this testing method allowed for the calculation of the material stiffness (Bisha Stiffness) and were used to predict its performance in unit load containment. Applied stretch film is currently compared measuring containment force, which current standards define as the amount of force required to pull out a 15.2cm diameter plate, 10.1cm out, located 25.4cm down from the top and 45.7cm over from the side of a standard 121.9cm width unit load. Given this definition, increasing the amount of force required to pull the plate out can be achieved by manipulating two different stretch film properties, either increasing the stiffness of the film or increasing the tension of the film across the face of the unit load during the application process. Therefore, for this research, the traditional definition of containment force has been broken down into two components. Applied film stiffness was defined as the amount of force required to pull the film a given distance off the unit load. Containment force was defined as the amount of force that an applied film exerts on the corner of the unit load. The applied stretch film was evaluated using two different methods. The first method used the standard 10.1cm pull plate (same plate as ASTM D 4649) to measure the force required to pull the film out at different increments from the center on the face of the unit load. This measurement force was transformed into a material stiffness and film tension (which were subsequently resolved into containment force). The second, newly developed, method involved wrapping a bar under the film, on the corner of the unit load, and pulling out on the bar with a tensile testing machine. This method allowed for the direct measurement of the containment force and material stiffness. The results indicated that while some statistically significant differences were found for certain films, the material stiffness and containment were relatively consistent and comparable using either method. The use of the Bisha Stiffness to predict the applied stiffness and containment force yielded a statistically significant correlation but with a very low coefficient of determination. These results suggest that while film thickness and prestretch are key variables that can predict applied stiffness and containment force, more research should be conducted to study other variables that may allow for a better. High variability of the predictions observed were caused by the differences in film morphology between the different method of elongation (tensile vs application). This study was the first that attempted to define and correlate the tensile properties of stretch film and the applied properties of stretch film. From this research many, terms have been clarified, myths have been dispelled, formulas have been properly derived and applied to the data collected and a clear path forward had been laid out for future researchers to be able to predict applied stiffness and containment force from the elastic properties of stretch film.

Lilja, Andreas. "Temperature analysis of fire exposed load-bearing structures of mono glazed balconies." Thesis, Luleå tekniska universitet, Byggkonstruktion och brand, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:ltu:diva-81730.

Full text
Abstract:
Previous to the now acting construction regulations EKS and Eurocode, the fire resistance of the load-bearing structures of mono glazed balconies were designed with a fire test called the SP fire 105. In 2011, when EKS replaced the previous construction regulations called Boverkets konstruktionsregler, BKR, the SP fire 105 was no longer the requirement for mono glazed balconies. Instead, EKS prescribed that the load-bearing structures of mono glazed balconies should be determined by the use of nominal fire exposure or a natural fire model. EKS and Eurocode have previously prescribed that the standard temperature-time curve (ISO 834) was to be used when determining the fire resistance of structural elements according to nominal temperature-time curves. But an agreement made between Balkongföreningen and Boverket in 2011, established that the external temperature-time curve could be used for determination of the fire resistance of the structural elements of mono glazed balconies. The external temperature-time curve means a design temperature of the structural members of approximately 680 °C for a fire-resistance class R30, instead of a temperature of 842 °C for the standard temperature-time curve. In 2019, EKS 11 was introduced with a slight change in the regulation. The new regulation specifically implies that building parts placed within glazed balconies should not be considered as external. Due to the formulation in EKS 11, it is no longer possible to use the external temperature-time curve for verification of the fire resistance of structural elements of mono glazed balconies. The formulation says that building parts placed within glazed balconies should not be considered as external, which means that the standard temperature-time curve must be applied. The present research tries to clarify the more reasonable temperature-time curve of the standard fire curve and the external fire curve, or if neither of the curves is realistic. 16 scenarios were analysed in this study. Using CFD simulations in FDS, the adiabatic surface temperature of the structural parts could be established. The adiabatic surface temperatures were then used as input in the FEM calculation program TASEF to calculate the temperatures of structural elements of a mono glazed balcony during a fire. The results imply that the max temperatures of the steel members of the mono glazed balcony analysed are generally lower than the temperatures of the external temperature-time curve. In a worst-case scenario where the structural member is located just adjacent to the fire source, the max temperature can be higher than the temperature of the standard temperature-time curve. The balcony slab reaches max temperatures between the external temperature-time curve and the standard temperature-time curve. The temperature within the slab is below 500 °C at a depth of 15 mm and according to the 500 °C isotherm method presented in SS-EN 1992-1-2, concrete that has a temperature lower than 500 °C has not been damaged by the fire. Further studies are needed to establish whether the external temperature-time curve or the standard temperature-time curve is to be used when designing the fire resistance of the load-bearing structure of mono glazed balconies. A suggestion for further studies is to conduct fire tests of a fire within a mono glazed balcony. Such results could then be compared to the results of this study and hopefully, lead to conclusions that are needed for a complete establishment of which temperature-time curve that should be used.
15 mm in i balkongplattan understiger temperaturen på betongen 500 °C.

Full text
Abstract:
In this essay, I analyse the characters of Frodo and Aragorn in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and Peter Jackson’s film trilogy in order to see if traits and relationships are consistent between the novel and the films. Any changes in characters and the ways they interact in relationships entail changes not only to the overarching narrative, but potentially to the most important themes of the story: friendship and heroism. This is important for the general discourse on the films as adaptations, since they have been accused of not being true to the thematic core of the source material. Peter Jackson’s claim that the intention was to always remain true to the spirit of Tolkien’s novel, then necessitates a closer comparison of the two works. Therefore, in investigating the characters I look not only for differences and similarities, but also for the repercussions these have on the story and the potential reasons behind them. By examining the characters from the perspective of the novel, the films and the filmmakers’ commentaries, I discuss how the removal of social class in the films changes the actions of the characters and consequently affects the themes of friendship and heroism. I also bring up the effects of changing from a novel to film as well as the symbiotic relationship between the character traits and the narrative as a whole. This essay shows that though the social class, character traits and the narrative flow are changed in a circular pattern. A closer look at the films reveals that the story’s core themes of friendship and heroism not only remain consistent, but are given more emphasis than in the novel.

Firnigl, Danielle Elizabeth. "Tripping the light fantastic : exploring the imaginative geographies of Lord of the Rings ‘film tourism’ in New Zealand." Thesis, Durham University, 2009. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/312/.

Full text
Abstract:
From screen image to imagined spaces, the Lord of the Rings film-tourism experience – that is, tourism to New Zealand apparently motivated by the popular film trilogy which was filmed there – has received much anecdotal attention, yet little scholarly examination. In particular, how tourists are affected by the “you’ve seen the movie, now visit the set!” adage, remains under-examined. Whilst sociologies of tourism tend to emphasize the visual, spectatorial and passive nature of mediated forms of tourism, actual experiences of visiting the former film sets tend to challenge such theorizations of the phenomenon. In fact, what we find in New Zealand is a touristic landscape marked only by its absences and virtualities- little remains to show of ‘Middle-earth on earth’, leaving us with the question of what it is that, as tourists, we actually consume, and on what basis the apparently visual causality of cinematic tourism can be sustained. This research thus employs recent scholarship in cultural geography attuned to the more-than-representational and affective realms, in order to build a conceptually novel approach to thinking through ‘the film-tourist’. Rather than starting out from a position of critique, such an approach seeks to explore the ‘operational logics’ of tourist experience, how meaning is made through practices of popular culture consumption and tourism. Through a consideration of how tourists navigate these complex cinematic spaces, we find that visitors – both those who are fans or enthusiasts of The Lord of the Rings, and those who are simply ‘doing a rings thing’ as part of a broader touristic itinerary – engage in a range of animated practices, that demonstrate both an awareness of these multiply-mediated spaces, and an interest not only in ‘walking in the footsteps’ of Frodo and the fellowship, but also in the ‘backstage’ of the films’ production, and the very creation of ‘Middle earth- on earth’ in New Zealand.

Abstract:
Full text
Abstract:
Controlling the production of colloidal suspension films by evaporation is still, nowadays, atruly scientific obstacle for materials development. The drying of colloidal suspensions leads often tosurface and volume defects in the film. When the particles are soft, films are continuous but haveseveral folding surface defects. However, when the particles are hard (glassy latex, silica,...), the filmtends to crack and to be delaminated. These defects are often associated with residual stresses in thegel at the end of drying, due to the capillary pressure caused by the water menisci deformation at thefilm surface. Nevertheless, neither the size scale where constraint acts nor the relation between stressand cracking time were known. In this thesis we present the study of cracks morphology observed in films of differentcolloidal suspension mixtures obtained by a drying process. These mixtures are composed of hard(polystyrene crosslinked PBMA) and soft (PBA and PBMA) particles. The nanometric structure ofthese mixtures is obtained through neutron scattering and turbidity studies. We have mixtures withdifferent structures and different states of dispersion. While some mixtures contain dispersed particlesat a nanoscale, with an order of magnitude same as the particles size - 50 nm, some others containaggregated particles. The study of cracks morphology is performed on sessile drops by drying at thefree surface. Periodic radial cracks are observed during drying. We also observe that cracks periodincrease with the increment of soft particles fraction and temperature, but keeping constant itsperiodicity. We have demonstrated that the ratio: crack period between film thickness, i.e. λ/h, is theonly parameter that describes perfectly cracks morphology for a drying process at a free surface. Wealso demonstrated that this relation (λ/h) couldn’t decrease below 2 even in the case of glassy particles.Drying process induces high residual stresses in the gel, allowing to some fibers located between twocracks to delaminate radially. This delamination phenomenon fades with dissipation constraints. Wehave also established that the Russel’s mechanical model does not describe the period of cracks nearthe critical stress. Therefore, in this work we propose another model able to characterize theperiodicity of the cracks. We noticed that the properties of the substrate did not affect cracksmorphology. The evaporation rate changes the morphology of cracks, which in the case of a quickdrying it is possible to obtain unidirectional long loose fibers. However, for a slow drying, we arewitnessing the formation of not protruding cracks with the apparition of secondary transverse cracks

Graham, Earl Vincent. "Developing a remotely-sensed framework for fire monitoring in the Western Cape, South Africa." University of Western Cape, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/8334.

Abstract:
>Magister Scientiae - MSc
For a long time, fire dynamics has been misunderstood and viewed as either a destructive force or an ecological necessity. The Western Cape Province in South Africa experiences the frequent occurrence of fires, due to the prevailing Mediterranean climatic conditions. This climate is known for its hot and dry summers and its cold and wet winters, which, along with the highly flammable indigenous flora of the Western Cape, provide suitable conditions for the occurrence of fires. However, the local environmental and ecological variables that influence the occurrence of fires and that could assist with fire management practices remain poorly understood. The development of an integrated operational monitoring framework is therefore imperative for detecting and mapping the occurrence of fires in the Western Cape, South Africa.

Abstract:
There are three main factors affecting the stability of a palletized load that is unitized by a stretch wrapping mechanism. These factors include the type of unitized load, wrapping configuration and shipping method. The wrapping configuration is determined on the basis of the type of unitized load and shipping method. For this study, the aforementioned components were referred to as the package, the product, and the distribution environment. These components come together to make up a stretch wrapping system. The package corresponds to the stretch wrap film that is packaging the unitized load and pallet. The product corresponds to the goods placed on the pallet to be packaged by the stretch wrapper. The distribution environment corresponds to the hazards that the packaged product will encounter in transit. This study was designed to observe and understand the interactions between each of the components of the stretch wrap system. Prior to stretch wrapping a pallet of product, the film is elongated or pre-stretched. The elastic nature of the stretch wrap forces the film to conform around the palletized load. It is hypothesized that the film force that the stretch wrap applies to the palletized load contributes to improved load containment. Hence, the objective of this study was to determine the existence of a correlation between percentage pre-stretch to change in film force and load containment. For the study, a range of pre-stretched unitized loads were subjected to ISTA 3E distribution testing. Simultaneously the film force was monitored during the period of distribution testing. Subsequent to distribution testing, the load dispersion was quantified. The data obtained from this test suggested that there is no correlation between percentage pre-stretch and change in film force or load containment. The study also compared three methods of calculating pre-stretch: the marking wheel procedure, tapeless measure, and film cut and weigh. It was found that the most consistent method was the marking wheel procedure, followed by the cut and weigh procedure, and the tapeless measure procedure.

Abstract:
Road and railways tunnels are constructed for decreasing the transportation time inside city or intercity. The fire safety systems are mounted for the safe use of tunnels. Therefore, it is important to accurately predict the fire-induced air velocity, temperature and smoke concentrations in tunnel fires in order to design efficient fire protection systems. To this end, scaled tunnel models are used and experiments are carried to understand the phenomena on these tunnel models. In addition, the studies for investigating the tunnel fire phenomena and their methods of modeling techniques for fire experiments are mentioned. In the literature, there is no sufficient information about vehicles'
blockage effect on heat release rate and temperature distribution inside tunnel with different ventilation velocities. As a result, in order to research this subject, the scaled model tunnel is constructed in Fluid Mechanics Laboratory. Based on the Froude number scaling, wood sticks with different configuration inside the model tunnel are burned in a controlled environment. The heat release rate measurement, sampling of gases after combustion, mass loss rate of burning models and temperature distribution along the tunnels with different longitudinal ventilation velocities are measured to investigate the effect of different cross-sectional areas of the burning substances. Furthermore, the model vehicles having a square base area are built according to wood crib theory. The results are investigated with statistical techniques called "
Analysis of Variance"
and general results have been tried to be reached. It is determined that the variation of air velocity inside tunnel is not so effective, but model vehicle'
s cross sectional area is directly proportional to heat release rate.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Within this paper recently developed mathematical tools for the modelling of contact problems on thin film structures [1] for multilayers and gradient coatings are adapted to allow the investigation of laminate structures of transversal isotropy. Applying series approaches using Bessel and Sinus functions complete three dimensional solutions can be found for relatively complex laminate structures allowing to model quasistatic contact, impact and bending loads. Worked into a small computer program the approach can be used to model laminate structures with up to 100 different layers on an ordinary personal computer in an acceptable calculation time. The new tool is applied to analyse a variety of load problems typically occurring in windsurfing and leading to damage of the boards consisting of a laminated shell and an polymer foam core. [1] N. Le, Phung Van. "Assessment of Fire Safety for Intermediate Floors in the New Zealand Acceptable Solution C/AS1." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Civil and Natural Resources Engineering, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/3942.

Full text
Abstract:
This research project aims to investigate the level of risk/safety inherent in intermediate floors of buildings designed to the Compliance Document for the New Zealand Building Code, Fire Safety Clauses C1, C2, C3, C4 (C/AS1), and develop guidance for Fire Engineers on designing fire safety for firecells containing intermediate floors. The project also aims to develop a new set of prescriptive fire safety requirements for intermediate floors and proposes an outline of a verification method for designing fire safety for intermediate floors. This study includes a literature review of the fire safety requirements for intermediate floors (mezzanines) of prescriptive requirements in New Zealand and other countries such as USA, Canada, UK and Australia. The results of this literature review found that the intermediate floor size is limited and varies with country. An intermediate floor that has an area exceeding the limit set out by the prescriptive requirements is considered as a storey in all the countries prescriptive requirements reviewed including the New Zealand prescriptive requirements prior to 1991. Since 1991, in New Zealand Acceptable Solutions, the intermediate floor that has an area exceeding the limit will not be treated as a storey, however, a smoke control system is required. The level of risk was quantified using a factor of safety (FoS) - the ratio of Available Safe Egress Time (ASET) to Required Safe Egress Time (RSET). Two fire models; BRANZFIRE and FDS were used to calculate ASET and SIMULEX, an evacuation program, was used to calculate movement times of the occupants of the studied buildings. Unlike the traditional method in which RSET and FoS are assessed using single value, in this project the distribution of RSET and FoS were assessed using the @RISK software package. The analysis showed that the level of risk to the occupants of the firecells containing intermediate floors is always higher than that of the equivalent firecells without intermediate floors with the same occupant load and the differences in FoS range from 10% to 60%. The analysis also highlighted that the level of risk to the occupants of firecells having intermediate floors increases as the intermediate floor size increases, however, there are no clear cut-off points at which a higher level of fire safety precaution should be provided. The cut-off points in C/AS1 of 20% for a closed intermediate floor and 40% for an open intermediate floor, are not justified by this analysis. Occupant load has significant impact on the level of safety of the occupants of the firecells containing intermediate floors. The higher the occupant load the lower the level of safety is. The definitions for open and closed intermediate floors are proposed to which open and closed intermediate floors are clearly distinguished. The term “limited area intermediate floor” in the current C/AS1 is proposed be removed and all related clauses are proposed to be amended or deleted accordingly. A proposed new set of prescriptive fire safety requirements for intermediate floors has been developed based on the occupant load of intermediate floors and not the intermediate floor size in the form of a table similar to the current Table 4.1 of C/AS1. The occupant load and fire safety precautions (FSPs) of the intermediate floors are determined based on the occupant load and their required FSPs of the equivalent firecells without intermediate floors that have the same factor of safety with the firecells containing intermediate floors. With the proposed FSPs, a firecell with lower occupant load would require lesser fire safety requirements than a firecell with higher occupant load regardless of intermediate floor size. Moreover, with the proposed FSPs for intermediate floors, the level of safety of the occupants of the firecells having intermediate floors would be very similar to the level of safety of the equivalent firecells without intermediate floors. In addition to the proposed tables of FSPs, some clauses regarding the changes in the fire safety requirement and definitions for intermediate floors are proposed. Guidance for designers in designing fire safety for firecells containing intermediate floors in which the methods of modelling using BRANZFIRE and Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) are presented in detail, has been developed. The analysis has pointed out that the location of the exits is critical in designing fire safety for firecells containing intermediate floors and majority of exits from the lower floor should not be located under intermediate floors. Although one of the main objectives of this research project was to propose an outline of a verification method for designing fire safety for intermediate floors, the analysis showed that it is very difficult to develop a rational verification method for designing fire safety for firecells containing intermediate floors. Using the proposed FSPs for intermediate floors which are based on the occupant load of the intermediate floors in designing fire safety for firecells containing intermediate floors is recommended by this study. These recommendations do not preclude the use of specific fire engineering design for designing fire safety for firecells having intermediate floors.

Abstract:
Wood is a renewable material, it is strong in relation to its weight, climate smart but also combustible. Owing to its many advantages and the easy access in Sweden, wood is motivated as a topical building material. However, the aspects related to the combustible nature need to be considered in the design of buildings with a wooden frame. Whether and in such cases how to take into account the increased permanent fire load is a problem of which there are shared opinions. Today's regulatory framework is unclear in some aspects in its formulation and thus leaves room for interpretation. The purpose of this work is to investigate the reasonableness of tabulated data for permanent fire load and the sharp boundary between a BR1 building and a BR0 building but also by surveying how the industry handles the issue. In order to assess the reasonableness for the tabulated data, the method has been calculations with two different methods; one that follows BBR's guidelines (method 1) and another where calculations of the charring depth (method 2) have been performed, as well as a survey and a literature study. The result from the calculations in method 1 shows that in order for the level of the total fire load not to exceed the standard value for a residence of 800 MJ/m2, a low coefficient is required, and thus in principle all wood is assumed to be protected. According to the calculations in method two, it is possible to read out how the permanent fire load is affected by different protective linings and carbonation rates. The survey shows that the most common way to dimension fire protection is through simplified sizing, which entails that one does not have to consider whether the permanent fire load increases due to a combustible frame. There are divided opinions about whether Boverket's rules are enough to achieve adequate protection and how to handle it. The literature study shows that for the timber frame to be counted as fully protected it needs to be three layers of fire gypsum board in the ceiling and that two layers on the walls. Several conclusions can be drawn; the calculations indicate that a permanent fire load of 200 MJ/m2 (2013:11) is unreasonable in a wooden frame building also that if the permanent fire load is considered it becomes costly both economically and in terms of space. Even that Boverket's rules need to be clarified and adapted further against tall wood buildings and that fire projectors work differently and the experience of working with tall wood buildings differs greatly.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
Global Load Control (GLC) is a three-centre network with offices in Cape Town (South Africa), Brno (Czech Republic) and Istanbul (Turkey) that provides Weight&Balance services to its parent company, Lufthansa, and other airlines. The strategic direction of GLC includes growth in terms of expanding its customer base and target market as well as diversification into other services in the field of Ground Operations. Many of the airlines are re-evaluating their business model and service offering in order to increase their profitability and competitiveness in an industry that is going through a period of transformation. Historically, the industry has seen very small profit margins, which are expected to remain under immense pressure due to difficult macroeconomic conditions and strong competition. The human capital of GLC and the knowledge that exists within the organisation were identified as strategic assets during the strategy process. The shift towards a knowledge-driven economy and the importance of the ´knowledge worker´ has been acknowledged by scholars as well as the business community. Since then, ways to manage knowledge work and the productivity of the knowledge worker have received lots of attention. However, due to the contextual and subjective dimensions of knowledge, no blueprint exists for its successful implementation. The aim of the paper was to identify the contribution of knowledge management to the managerial process of positioning Global Load Control for strategic effectiveness. The research confirmed the growing recognition of the relevance of tacit knowledge as well as the importance of social capital to the organisational knowledge and intellectual capital, respectively. Important and relevant knowledge were found to be tacit and often lying in the action itself, which makes it difficult to codify and share with other employees. Strategic effectiveness of Global Load Control ultimately was found to be the ability to continuously support the customers in increasing their competitiveness, thereby creating strong ties with GLC as a business partner. This included the ability to maintain or increase its cost effectiveness and identifying new ways for the customer to gain an advantage. The research revealed that parts of the knowledge required for achieving this lie with the customer, which implied that they had to be integrated into the organisation´s knowledge base. Knowledge creation was found to be central in utilising GLC´s human capital to increase its intellectual capital. The importance of the social dimension, both internally and externally, was shown throughout the paper and found to be the linking element. Not ignoring the role and contribution of the physical infrastructure to the process of knowledge sharing, HR practices and policies play a vital role in creating enabling conditions for knowledge sharing and building of social capital, which are prerequisites for the creation of organisational knowledge and the development of GLC´s intellectual capital. Rather than being a stand-alone process, knowledge management is to be seen as a philosophy that provides valuable insights and gives guidance to the managerial processes of an organisation. When viewed as an integral part of the business, knowledge management can greatly contribute to positioning the organisation for strategic effectiveness. However, for this to happen, the subjective, dynamic and contextual nature of knowledge has to be acknowledged and the impact of factors such as organisational culture and learning styles be researched and integrated into the knowledge management strategy. The findings in this paper apply to the organisation researched only. However, it contributed to the body of knowledge by complementing the theoretical frameworks around knowledge management and intellectual capital with practical findings. It thus supports other organisations in identifying suitable research approaches and topics in their own organisation and allows academics to refine and question current concepts and thereby continue to develop our understanding of knowledge management.

Öhrling, Emil. "Brandrisker i däckhotell : Är samhällets krav på byggnadstekniskt brandskydd tillräckligt?" Thesis, Luleå tekniska universitet, Byggkonstruktion och brand, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:ltu:diva-83256.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of the thesis is mainly to investigate the risks that exist in case of fire in tire hotels and to evaluate whether society's requirements for fire protection in buildings are enough to manage this level of risk. Society's requirements in the study are Boverket's building regulations, BFS 2011:6 with amendments up to BFS 2020:4, (BBR) and the requirements that takes place in accordance with simplified design. The requirements in BBR have been quantified to enable a comparison between BBR and the actual conditions found in tire hotels. The study only treats three of the five items which BBR is based on. Development and spread of fire and smoke within the construction works is limited, spread of fire to adjacent construction works is limited and consideration has been taken to the rescue team's safety in case of fire. It exists some experience of fires in tire storage, but not a general picture of how a tire hotel should be design according to the building regulations, nor if it´s compatible with the building regulations' intention or the rescue team's practical experience of carrying out a rescue operation. The question is how the fire protection should be designed in tire hotels so that society's requirements can be fulfilled? When it can be thousands of tires which are stored at the same time in a tire hotel. The method to answer the questions was to carry out a few different analyses based on real tire hotels, together with research and studies in this area, so the questions could be answered quantitatively and/or qualitatively. However, all questions required some assumptions to be answered. To obtain something to base the assumptions against, a case study on real tire hotels was conducted. Five different geometric models were therefore created based on the buildings in terms of volume, construction materials and ventilation openings. The case study also showed a great variation in the number of tires that were stored in the hotels. Even with the variation, it can be stated that the fire load in a tire hotel exceeds 1600 MJ/m2 per floor area. The buildings construction material has a big impact on the fire temperature in the room. Tire hotels with a concrete construction provide better conditions for the fire-separation components to maintain the limiting function, in comparison with a construction of metal sheets with a core of insulation. A fire compartment boundary that is exposed to a temperature rise that occur in a metal structure, may not have the function over time it supposed to limit the spread of fire to other rooms during the intended time. BBR specifies two protective barriers to limit the spread of fire to adjacent construction, which are safety distances or that an exterior wall is designed as a fire compartment boundary. The function to limited fire spread by a fire compartment boundary is dependent on the building's construction material to fulfill its purpose. For a safety distance to work, the openings in the facade must be limited and not larger than a normal garage door. The purpose of protecting adjacent construction is therefore not fulfilled. The safety distance should be in relation to the area of openings instead of a fixed value. If the safety distance is a fixed value, the areas of openings should be regulated, if not, the size of the critical radiation that occur on an adjacent construction should be limited. Examination of the rescue team's safety was a comparison between BBR and interviews on how a rescue operation could be carried out. Under the interviews it was discussed what type of risks that are caused by the fire and the building, and how these risks can affect the implementation of the operation. The fire technical arrangements do not fulfill its purpose, to create the level of safety that are required for the rescue team when the fire technical design is according to a simplified design. Without early detection, the risk is imminent that the fire is too large for a person to use an indoor fire hydrant. The most important arrangements for the safety of the rescue team are however to ensure access to the right volume of water near the building. Tire hotels placed in containers are the only type of building which can be projected according to simplified design. This storage method provides the best opportunity for a successful rescue operation with a low risk.  Containers are also the only geometric model where fire compartment boundary would clearly fulfill its purpose, in both class EI 30 and EI 60. Containers have normally no windows or other equivalent openings.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of the present thesis was to test whether the measurement of static pressure distribution and magnitude with the aid of red color density variation is appropriate to directly measure the teat load caused by a collapsing liner and to identify different factors influencing this load. Therefore, investigations were carried out in a laboratory milking parlor using different artificial teats. The influence of the machine vacuum, the pulsation rate, the pulsation ratio, and the liner type were analyzed. The present investigations showed that the tested method is appropriate to directly measure the teat load due to liner collapse. A significant effect of all tested factors could be found as well. The higher the machine vacuum, pulsation rate, and pulsation ratio, the higher the teat load caused by a collapsing liner. The technical characteristics of a liner, especially the shape of the barrel, differ significantly with regard to the teat load. In all investigations more pressure was applied to the teat end.

Abstract:
Bearings today need to be able to run at very high speed, providing high positional accuracy for the structure that it supports, and requiring very little or no maintenance. For this to happen, bearings must have tight tolerances and very low or zero friction during operation. This pushes many traditional contact-type bearings to their limits as they often fail due to friction, generating heat and causing wear. By comparison, existing non-contact bearings fare better because of their very low or zero friction. But some have their own problem too. For example, the fact that aerostatic bearings require an air supply means having to use a separate air compressor and connecting hoses. This makes the installation bulky. Aerodynamic and hydrodynamic bearings cannot support loads at zero speed. Both hydrodynamic and hydrostatic bearings may cause contamination to the work-pieces and the work environment because of the use of lubricating fluid. A potential solution to the above-mentioned problems is the new squeeze film air bearing. It works on the rapid squeeze action of an air film to produce separation between two metal surfaces. This has the benefit of being compact with a very simple configuration because it does not require an external pressurized air supply, can support loads at zero speed and is free of contamination. For this research, two squeeze film air journal bearings, made from material of Al 2024 - T3 and Cu - C101 with the same geometry, were designed. The bearing is in the shape of a round tube with three fins on the outer surface and the journal, a round rod. When excited at a certain normal mode, the bearing shell flexes with a desirable modal shape for the squeeze film action. The various modes of vibration of Al bearing were obtained from a finite-element model implemented in ANSYS. Two Modes, the 13th and 23rd, at the respective frequencies of 16.320 kHz and 25.322 kHz, were identified for further investigation by experiments with respect to the squeeze film thickness and its load-carrying capacity. For Cu bearing, the two Modes are also 13th and 23rd at the respective frequencies of 12.184 kHz and 18.459 kHz. In order to produce dynamic deformation of the bearings at their modes, a single layer piezoelectric actuator was used as a driver. The maximum stroke length and the maximum blocking force of the single layer piezoelectric actuator were determined using manual calculation and ANSYS simulation. In the coupled-field analysis, the single layer piezoelectric actuator was mounted on the outside surface of the bearing shell and loaded with an AC and a DC voltage in order to produce the static and dynamic deformation. For the static analysis, the maximum deformation of Al bearing shell is 0.124 μm when the actuators are driven at the DC of 75 V. For the dynamic analysis, the actuators are driven at three levels of AC, namely 55, 65 and 75V with a constant DC offset of 75V and the driving frequency coincided with the modal frequency of the bearing. The maximum dynamic deformation of Al bearing shell is 3.22μm at Mode 13 and 2.08μm at Mode 23 when the actuators were driven at the AC of 75 V and the DC of 75 V. Similarly, the FEA simulation was used for analyzing Cu bearing. Furthermore, the dynamic deformation of both Al and Cu bearing at Mode 13 and 23 are validated by experiments. This research developed two theoretical models that explain the existence of a net pressure in a squeeze film for the levitation. The first model uses the ideal gas law as first approximation whilst the second uses the CFX simulation to provide a more exact explanation. In terms of the load-carrying capacity, Mode 13 was identified to be better than Mode 23 for both bearings. However, at Mode 13, Al bearing has a higher load-carrying capacity than Cu bearing. This is due to Al bearing having a higher modal frequency and amplitude. Finally, the coupled-field analysis for fluid solid interaction (FSI) was studied at both Mode 13 and 23 for Al bearing. The findings are that: a) the fluid force in the squeeze film can affect the dynamic deformation of the bearing shell, especially at high oscillation frequency, more at Mode 13 than at Mode 23 due to the relatively high pressure end-leakage in the latter; b) the dynamic deformation of the bearing shell increases with the gap clearance in a logarithmic manner at Mode 13; and c) the micron levels of gap clearance provide a damping effect on the dynamic deformation of the bearing shell at Mode 13 and at Mode 23, though much less dominant.

Abstract:
This work is devoted to the study of the deposit of soot particles transported by fire smoke. The literature review provides a summary of the known properties of soot particles produced by fire as well as a review of the state of the art tools to model their deposit. The CFD tool Fire Dynamics Simulator allows since version 6 to predict the deposition of soot. However no full scale experimental study provides quantitative data about thermophoretically driven soot deposition, making validation impossible. A first experimental campaign was conducted to valuate FDS and modelling tools provided by the literature in the case of full-scale deposition of soot particles produced by the combustion of heptane. These tests were followed by a second full-scale experimental campaign with the aim of taking into account the flow of smoke along the wall and its speed. Both full scale campaigns were finally completed by a small-scale experimental bench mounted in order to tudy the influence of the flow rate on particle thermally driven deposition within a duct

Abstract:
This study seeks to gain an insight into the experiences Lord of the Rings tourists have on guided tours in New Zealand and the role of the tour guide(s) in that experience. The study examines motivations, expectations, actual experience and its evaluation and the role of the tour leader and guides. By drawing primarily on the results of qualitative research that examined the experience of film tourists and other people involved in the film tourism industry over a span of three years, I identified underlying motivations involved in the production and consumption of film tourism. The study found that pre-tour images of Lord of the Rings and its publicity surrounding the making of the films play a significant role in the formation of film tourists' expectations. The emotional relationship towards the films and the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien had motivated film tourists to seek a meaningful and sincere experience. Furthermore, the film and its making as discussed on the DVDs, further publicised myths like the authenticity of the film production itself and the experience of great meaning for one's personal life. Consequently, the study found that most film tourists put a high significance on the sincerity of the relationships within the tour community and with the tour leader and guide(s). The film location visit itself was experienced as highly rewarding but was significantly enhanced by the presence of the tour community ('fellowship'), reenactments and the physical presence on site. This embodiment was crucial for the overall experience as it further authenticated the location visit but also the journey itself as a worthy and spiritual endeavour. It was shown that the New Zealand image of 'green', 'clean' and 'exotic otherness' has been reinforced by multiple media portraits and matches many aspects of the Middle-earth image. All film tourists judged the use of New Zealand for the portrayal of Middle-earth as 'authentic' even if they knew about J.R.R. Tolkien's British background. Furthermore, they judged their film tourism experience as authentic even though the locations were used in a fictional setting. Thus the notions of object authenticity was explored and replaced with the concepts of existential authenticity and sincerity to shift the focus towards the active process of negotiation of authenticity in the tourism experience. To understand tourists' behaviour and motivation, notions of 'spirituality' and 'pilgrimage' were also employed. The study tourists undertook a meaningful and spiritually significant journey that was enhanced through the experience of embodiment and community which suggested parallels between the religious pilgrim and the secular film tourist. Both are on a meaningful journey to distant places and follow scripted guidelines while also creating their own experience. Embodiment played an important role. Furthermore, film tourists sought the community of other believers and were willing to 'follow in the footsteps' of film stars and crew when choosing which film locations and eateries to visit as they sought places that had attained an 'aura'.

Abstract:
This thesis demonstrates the previously unacknowledged contribution made by early screenwriting teachers to the development of the Hollywood film industry from 1910 to 1922. Through a study of five key screenwriting teachers from the period, it shows the significant role played by such figures in the translation of playwriting theory and theatrical tradition into writing for film. Drawing on an extensive range of primary materials, including manuals and columns written for the fan and trade press, it demonstrates the role played by such teachers in the formation and codification of a set of writing techniques specific to the film medium. In doing so, this thesis fills an important gap in the historiography of screenwriting in Hollywood, giving due credit to a body of work that has previously received only passing consideration, and highlighting the role of early screenwriting teachers, which has previously been understated if not ignored. The thesis also examines some aspects of their legacy in the context of the role and function of contemporary screening gurus.

Abstract:
For roughly the past 200 years land-managers have used the practice of “muirburning” to manipulate the structure of heather (Calluna vulgaris) to create a patchwork of habitat structures able to provide forage and nesting sites for red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) as well as grazing for sheep (Ovis aries) and red deer (Cervus elaphus). This thesis investigates both the behaviour and impact of management fires in recognition of the need to develop multi-aim land management practices that ensure both continued productivity and protection of biodiversity in the face of climatic and environmental change. Fuel structure and loading are crucial controlling factors on both fire behaviour and impact governing both rate of spread and heat release to the ground surface. A visual obstruction method is developed that estimates total and fine fuel loading as well as the structure of the heather canopy. In order to adequately understand fire impact a dimensional analysis approach is taken to estimating the mass of burnt heather stems. Experiments at a number of spatial and temporal scales relate variation in heather fuel moisture content to stand structure and variation in weather conditions. Monitoring shows moisture contents to be relatively stable temporally, but spatially variable. Periods of extreme low moisture contents in early spring are associated with frozen ground, winter cuticle damage and physiological drought. Such conditions may have contributed to the large number of wildfires in 2003. A replicated plot design was used to investigate the effect of weather conditions and fuel loading on fire behaviour. An empirical approach is taken to fire behaviour modelling with equations describing rate of spread and fireline intensity being developed on the basis of fuel structure descriptors and windspeed. The theoretical negative correlation between fuel bed density and rate of spread is demonstrated to hold true for heather stands, while the impact of heterogeneity in fuel bed structure is also investigated. Redundancy Analysis is used to investigate the influence of multiple predictors on a number of aspects of fire behaviour including: rate of spread, fireline intensity, flame length and ground surface heating. Data from this and previous studies are used to ground-truth a number of fire behaviour prediction systems including BehavePlus and the Canadian Fire Behaviour Prediction System. Finally linkages between fire behaviour, fire severity and heather regeneration are investigated. A number of proxy measures of ‘Immediate Severity’ are tested and used to examine the influence of fires on plant regeneration. The post-fire development of stands is shown to relate primarily to stand age and structure before burning, and to post-fire substrates rather than variation in fire behaviour and severity.

This work has been realised within a CIFRE contract with TOTAL. Its aim was to validate all the physical models used in a computation, which simulates an annular dispersed flow through a pipe used in a water washing process in refinery plants. That is why, a whole set of data has been gathered using experimental boundary conditions which are representative to those used in industrial configurations. The geometry is made of a horizontal pipe with a centred nozzle followed by a 90º elbow in the vertical plane. Several experimental boundary conditions enable one to study the influence of the gas velocity, the type of the spray injection and the pressure on the different physical phenomena. These results including spray and liquid film visualisations, droplets distribution and size measurements as well as liquid film thickness and mass flow measurements were analysed in order to extract the main interaction mechanism between the gas and the dispersed phase, the gas and the liquid film, and the dispersed phase and the annular liquid film. Meanwhile, simulations using a RANS approach were realized with the ONERA code named CEDRE and its results were compared to the gathered measurements

Full text
Abstract:
The phasing between increases in temperature and greenhouse gas concentrations during large climatic variations in the past is classically estimated using analyses in polar ice cores, in the ice phase for the temperature and in the gas phase (trapped air bubbles) for the concentration of greenhouse gases. This phasing is still insufficiently constrained and solving this problem requires a better understanding of the mechanical process of snow to ice metamorphism near to the top of the ice sheet (i.e. the firn, about 100 m deep). In the absence of melting, the transformation of snow (a material with open porosity in contact with the atmosphere) into ice (a material containing isolated bubbles) occurs progressively as a response to temperature gradients near the surface, and the weight of overlying snow in deeper layers. Depending on temperature and precipitation conditions, this process occurs in a few decades to several millennia and a ~100 meters depth range. It controls the age difference between the ice and the entrapped gases. Predicting the gas trapping depth is a major issue in paleoclimatology, especially in order to understand the phasing between temperature changes and changes in greenhouse gas concentrations.A thermo-mechanical model of snow densification has been developed at LGGE, it includes the main mechanical processes, the thermal properties of ice, and gas trapping criteria. The model performances can be tested and improved using experimental studies of modern firns (density, open/closed porosity ratio, etc). For firnification under ancient climates, measurements of isotopes of inert gases (d15N et d40Ar) in the air trapped in ice cores provide direct informations about past variations of firn structure (e.g. diffusive zone thickness). Large differences between firn densification model outputs and gas isotopic data are obtained in Antarctica, and imply a large uncertainty on past climatic reconstructions. Understanding this discrepancy is a major issue in paleoclimatology. As part of this thesis work, we took into account the effects of the temperature dependence of activation energies and impurities (dust) on the firn densification speed. It allowed to reconcile the model results with available data. The modified model results show an overall consistency with measured density profiles of present-day polar firns and isotopes of inert gases over deglaciations (also called terminations). We also analyze new high resolution measurements of d15N and d40Ar over Terminations 2 (129-138ka) and 3 (243-251ka) on the Dome C and Vostok ice cores. We have shown that the different evolutions of d15N between different sites and different deglaciations are largely explained by differences in accumulation rates that control the snow/ice transition depth. We also showed that the use of air isotopes was an important complement to the use of water isotopes to constrain local climatic dynamics in eastern Antarctica during deglaciations

Abstract:
The current Swedish building code (Boverkets Byggregler, BBR) is very strict regarding fire-safety in high-rise timber structures because of the heightened risk of fast flame spread or structural failure in case of fire. Fire safety solutions, that are used in timber structures must therefore be optimal to contain flames from spreading in the event of fire. The current building code requires that load-bearing elements must withhold their load-bearing capacity for 60 minutes under fire. The purpose of this study was to research the effect that different fire-retardant surface treatments, have on fire protection of a load bearing, laminated timber element. Thereafter, a short analysis was made on the environmental impact of the fire-retardant surface-treatments in question and finally, a cost analysis and comparison were conducted with regard to different fire-safety solutions such as fire-resistant gypsum board and a combination of fire-resistant gypsum board and stone-wool. The methods used in this study are a combination of theoretical reviews and theoretical calculations. A theoretical review was conducted in order to collect the information needed to understand the behavior of timber under fire, the impact of fire-resistant surface treatments on fire protection, and the environmental impact of the actual surface treatments. Therefore, a series of theoretical calculations were made in accordance with European standards (Eurocodes) in order to present the impact in numbers. The calculations made were concerning a laminated timber beam with the dimensions of 145 x 450 x 6000 [mm] and took into account the remaining cross-section of the timber element under various timestamps during fire with regard to fire-stage, charring-rate, and fire coating. The results of this study indicate that the moment-capacity and shear-capacity of an untreated beam decrease constantly under fire and does not fulfill the requirements of the Swedish building code. Thereafter, in case that the same timber beam is fire-treated with a fire-retardant surface treatment. The moment-capacity is observed to increase in the first stage of fire, were the fire-protection of the surface-retardant treatment is still in action. Therefore, after fire-protection ceases, the moment-capacity of the timber beam is calculated to decrease in different rates with regard to fire-stage. The shear capacity of the treated beam is calculated to decrease under fire with a time-displacement of 30 & 60 minutes in comparison to the untreated element. The conclusions are that the studied surface treated timber beam and the actual fire treatments fulfill the requirements of the Swedish building code. Have insignificant environmental impact and are in comparison to other solutions cheaper.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores the differential effects of fires and rodent communities on native and invasive desert plant communities. Chapter one examines the impacts of fire and repeat fires on fuel loads in two different Utah desert sites, one in the cool Great Basin Desert and one in the hyper-arid Mojave Desert, over the course of four years. We found that both desert sites responded with varying intensities to a single burn, but the effects of a reburn were not as pronounced. We also found that our Great Basin Desert site had a stronger response to fire than our Mojave Desert site, producing a higher plant fuel loads that could potentially exacerbate the changing fire regimes. These data can be used to help map the effects that climate change may have on fuel loads and the fire potential of these deserts. Chapter two uses a full factorial experimental design to compare the effects of rodent herbivory and fire on native versus invasive seedlings at our Mojave Desert field site. We found that rodent herbivory has a more negative impact on the survival of native seedlings than invasive seedlings. This could be because the invasives are grasses that tend to tolerate herbivory better than the native shrubs and forbs. Chapter three again uses a full factorial experimental design to assess the impacts of rodents and fire on the fate of native and invasive seeds at our field site in the Mojave Desert. We found that rodents removed seeds, and they did show preferences for some species of seed over others, but these preferences were not different between native and invasive seeds or seed mass. We propose that the preferences may be influenced by other seed traits such as water content, handling time or physical and chemical defenses. As with the seedlings in chapter two, fire did not have any impact on rodent seed preferences. These data highlight the importance of considering rodent effects on seeds used in restoration effects following wildfires.

Abstract:

The digital evolution in the film industry has opened possibilities that was only to blockbusters before the digital age. I am talking about mass-scenes. Huge scenes with hordes of people often in huge battlefields. This was earlier in film history an extremly costly undertaking for the filmindustry and was a major reason why the large studio systems in Hollywood collapsed in the 60s. Now we can enjoy large scale battles created with CGI without costly extras, costumes and props. It’s all made with the computer and with ’blue screen’ technology. Is it possible to track the mass-scene back to some sort of origin or at least to who that defined the mass-scene ? If we look closer at mass-scenes used in contemporary movies then a clear pattern often emerges. These scenes can often be traced back to especially two propaganda films from the late 30s. Triumph des Willens by Leni Riefenstahl and Alexander Nevsky by Sergei M. Eisenstein. Of course there are others, but these two stands out from the others regarding mass-scenes. My opinion is that these two classic propaganda films have defined the mass-scenes as we have come to see and understand them in many comtemporary films from Star Wars to Lord Of The Rings.

In this thesis I will try to explore the usage of mass-scenes in comtemporary films and hopefully uncover the strong intertextual ties to Triumph des Willens and Alexander Nevsky.

I will also attempt to define the mass-scene and it’s usage in contemporary film.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent times, light gauge steel framed (LSF) structures, such as cold-formed steel wall systems, are increasingly used, but without a full understanding of their fire performance. Traditionally the fire resistance rating of these load-bearing LSF wall systems is based on approximate prescriptive methods developed based on limited fire tests. Very often they are limited to standard wall configurations used by the industry. Increased fire rating is provided simply by adding more plasterboards to these walls. This is not an acceptable situation as it not only inhibits innovation and structural and cost efficiencies but also casts doubt over the fire safety of these wall systems. Hence a detailed fire research study into the performance of LSF wall systems was undertaken using full scale fire tests and extensive numerical studies. A new composite wall panel developed at QUT was also considered in this study, where the insulation was used externally between the plasterboards on both sides of the steel wall frame instead of locating it in the cavity. Three full scale fire tests of LSF wall systems built using the new composite panel system were undertaken at a higher load ratio using a gas furnace designed to deliver heat in accordance with the standard time temperature curve in AS 1530.4 (SA, 2005). Fire tests included the measurements of load-deformation characteristics of LSF walls until failure as well as associated time-temperature measurements across the thickness and along the length of all the specimens. Tests of LSF walls under axial compression load have shown the improvement to their fire performance and fire resistance rating when the new composite panel was used. Hence this research recommends the use of the new composite panel system for cold-formed LSF walls. The numerical study was undertaken using a finite element program ABAQUS. The finite element analyses were conducted under both steady state and transient state conditions using the measured hot and cold flange temperature distributions from the fire tests. The elevated temperature reduction factors for mechanical properties were based on the equations proposed by Dolamune Kankanamge and Mahendran (2011). These finite element models were first validated by comparing their results with experimental test results from this study and Kolarkar (2010). The developed finite element models were able to predict the failure times within 5 minutes. The validated model was then used in a detailed numerical study into the strength of cold-formed thin-walled steel channels used in both the conventional and the new composite panel systems to increase the understanding of their behaviour under nonuniform elevated temperature conditions and to develop fire design rules. The measured time-temperature distributions obtained from the fire tests were used. Since the fire tests showed that the plasterboards provided sufficient lateral restraint until the failure of LSF wall panels, this assumption was also used in the analyses and was further validated by comparison with experimental results. Hence in this study of LSF wall studs, only the flexural buckling about the major axis and local buckling were considered. A new fire design method was proposed using AS/NZS 4600 (SA, 2005), NAS (AISI, 2007) and Eurocode 3 Part 1.3 (ECS, 2006). The importance of considering thermal bowing, magnified thermal bowing and neutral axis shift in the fire design was also investigated. A spread sheet based design tool was developed based on the above design codes to predict the failure load ratio versus time and temperature for varying LSF wall configurations including insulations. Idealised time-temperature profiles were developed based on the measured temperature values of the studs. This was used in a detailed numerical study to fully understand the structural behaviour of LSF wall panels. Appropriate equations were proposed to find the critical temperatures for different composite panels, varying in steel thickness, steel grade and screw spacing for any load ratio. Hence useful and simple design rules were proposed based on the current cold-formed steel structures and fire design standards, and their accuracy and advantages were discussed. The results were also used to validate the fire design rules developed based on AS/NZS 4600 (SA, 2005) and Eurocode Part 1.3 (ECS, 2006). This demonstrated the significant improvements to the design method when compared to the currently used prescriptive design methods for LSF wall systems under fire conditions. In summary, this research has developed comprehensive experimental and numerical thermal and structural performance data for both the conventional and the proposed new load bearing LSF wall systems under standard fire conditions. Finite element models were developed to predict the failure times of LSF walls accurately. Idealized hot flange temperature profiles were developed for non-insulated, cavity and externally insulated load bearing wall systems. Suitable fire design rules and spread sheet based design tools were developed based on the existing standards to predict the ultimate failure load, failure times and failure temperatures of LSF wall studs. Simplified equations were proposed to find the critical temperatures for varying wall panel configurations and load ratios. The results from this research are useful to both structural and fire engineers and researchers. Most importantly, this research has significantly improved the knowledge and understanding of cold-formed LSF loadbearing walls under standard fire conditions.

Abstract:
Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (PFM) is a powerful tool for the characterization of ferroelectric materials thanks to its ability to map and control in a non destructive way domain structures in ferroelectric films. Most of the time, the ferroelectric behaviour of a film is tested by writing domains of opposite polarization with the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) tip and/or by performing hysteresis loops with the AFM tip as a top electrode. A given sample is declared ferroelectric when domains of opposite direction have been detected; corresponding to zones of distinct contrast on the PFM image, or when an open hysteresis loop is obtained. More prudently in certain cases, the ferroelectricity is at last attested only when the contrast is stable within several hours. But as the thickness of the films studied by PFM decrease, data become difficult to interpret. In particular, charges trapped after current injection due to leakage currents and electrochemical phenomena due to the water layer under the tip may contribute in a non-negligible way to the final contrast of PFM images. In this thesis, some PFM measurements are performed on ferroelectric PbZrTiO3, BaTiO3 thin films and BiFeO3 nanostructures. Different parameters used in PFM measurements are discussed with special attention on the buckling first harmonic PFM measurements which allow the amplification of the PFM signal. The impact of electrochemical effects on the PFM contrast are discussed and are shown experimentally. Then, the standard procedure which is used in order to show the ferroelectricity of a film is applied to a non-ferroelectric sample with apparently the same results. To do so, we use a LaAlO3, Gd2O3 and SiO2 amorphous dielectric films and apply similar voltages as for artificially written ferroelectric domains. The resulting pattern is imaged by PFM and exhibit zones of distinct PFM contrasts, stable with time, similar to the one obtained with ferroelectric samples. These results are explained and is compared with results obtained on BaTiO3 thin films prepared by Molecular Beam Epitaxy which are supposed to be ferroelectric. In order to confirm the ferroelectricity of our thin films, several macroscopic electrical techniques are introduced. The aim of this study is to establish a reliable procedure which would remove any ambiguity in the characterization of the ferroelectric nature of such samples

Abstract:
During liquid hydrocarbon fire tests in the DIVA device of IRSN, a low-frequency (LF) oscillatory phenomenon, was observed. This phenomenon manifests itself by large variations of the average pressure in the room, which can lead to a loss of confinement and thus promote the spread of fire and the release of pollutants beyond the local. It is accompanied by intermittent displacements of the flame outside the fuel pan. The fine study of this phenomenon consisted in designing a 1:4 scale model of the DIVA device, allowing us to carry out a very large number of tests, varying some parameters. The analysis of the results obtained allowed us to identify different combustion regimes, to describe the mechanisms responsible for the appearance of the LF oscillations, and to characterize the properties of these oscillations (frequency and amplitude). The occurrence and persistence of LF oscillations essentially depend on the precarious equilibrium between the supply of fresh air and the supply of fuel vapors which results from the heat flux received at its surface. An exploratory numerical study using the CFD code SAFIR was then conducted using both the experimentally measured evaporation rate and that calculated using an evaporation model. The model does not correctly describe the displacements of the flame outside the fuel pan. However, it satisfactorily reproduces the LF oscillatory fire behavior, especially its dominant frequency

Abstract:
Using endless carbon filaments for concrete reinforcement, so called textile reinforced concrete, the possibility of reconstruction and strengthening of existing concrete structures arises. The question concerning fire resistance of structures strengthened like this has to be answered. Fire tests provide answers. Steel reinforced concrete slabs strengthened with textile reinforced concrete loaded with 33 % of ultimate load survived an ISO-fire for 60 minutes. Loaded with 50 % and 65 % of ultimate load the slabs failed after 55 minutes and 30 minutes of fire exposure due to tension failure of the textile reinforcement layer. Slabs not loaded or with a low load level during fire exposure showed remaining bearing resistances of 65 % of ultimate load after 30 minutes and 50 % of ultimate load after 60 minutes of fire exposure. During and after fire exposure rising deflections and growing crack widths were observed. However no spalling occurred. Therefore the textile reinforced concrete layer can be taken into account as concrete covering for the steel reinforcement. Those extraordinary positive results document, that reinforced concrete structures with additional fibre reinforced concrete can achieve fire resistance classes of R60 without additional provisions. To achieve comprehensive understanding of interaction between steel and fibre reinforcement and failure mechanisms in case of fire more knowledge concerning the mechanic properties of fibre reinforced concrete at high temperatures is essential. The influence of oxidation of the carbon fibres could not fully be answered

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on the use of electrochemical techniques and microscopy such as scanning electrochemical microscopy and the recently developed Intermitted Contact SECM (IC-SECM). With the using of these techniques, the chemical and electrochemical properties of micro and nanostructured multilayer thin films of Pt/Al2O3 and borod doped diamond (BDD) were studied. Furthermore, a simulated model that describes the mass transport phenomena in particular SECM experiments was developed. In particular, the model takes into account of the recession degree of an active substrate with different dimensions. The model was experimentally verified. Finally, protocols for the preparation of H+ ion-selective microelectrodes for IC-SECM were developed.

Abstract:
This thesis presents the results of a research project to investigate the behaviour of the two components of a reverse channel connection to concrete filled tubular sections: the reverse channel and the steel tubular section, at both ambient and elevated temperatures. This research forms part of a European Union funded project on the robustness of joints to composite columns under fire conditions. The specific objectives of this research are to develop methods of quantifying the load-deformation behaviour at various temperatures of the two components. This research has been carried out through a combination of experiments, numerical simulations and analytical developments. Two series of tests have been carried out at different elevated temperatures, one for the reverse channels with lateral loads to the web applied as tensile loads through bolts and one for the concrete filled tubular sections under lateral loads applied through two steel plates (simulating the legs of a reverse channel) in the longitudinal direction of the section. These tests have been used to provide data for the validation of the numerical models based on using the general finite element package ABAQUS. The validated numerical models have been used to conduct a number of parametric studies to provide extensive data for the development of analytical methods to determine the load-deflection characteristics of the two components. For the reverse channel web, the load-deflection relationship consists of two parts and this research has developed analytical equations to predict initial stiffness, yield and ultimate resistance. The initial stiffness is based on extending and simplifying the Timoshenko solution for a plate under a block of lateral loads. The yield resistance is based on the yield line solution that the failure patterns were chosen based on the results attained from test and simulations. The ultimate resistance was calculated based on virtual work principle for the patterns considered in the yield resistance part. For the rectangular concrete filled tubular sections under lateral pulling forces applied through two plates, the load-deflection curve consists of two parts, depicting a linear phase followed by a nonlinear part. This research has developed expressions to calculate initial stiffness, yield resistance, and ultimate resistance. The initial stiffness is formulated according to the Timoshenko solution for a partially loaded plate. The yield resistance is determined by employing yield line solution for the yield patterns obtained from both the test and FE modelling. The ultimate resistance is evaluated by implementing the virtual work principle to the patterns considered in former part. The analytical load-deflection solutions have been compared with the numerical simulation and the experimental results and the agreement is generally satisfactory.
