Abstract:

Internet of Things changes our world with everything we have around us, our everyday things will be connected to the Internet. According to experts, in two years there will be up to 29 billion devices connected to the Internet. With all of the information that is produced it is important to keep the communication secure, otherwise there can be serious problems in the future. Therefore the objective with this study has been to investigate the area of jamming attacks on wireless communication for Internet of Things, more specifically on LoRa and WiFi technologies. This was made by a literature study to research about Internet of Things, the industrial side of it, the two communication technologies and wireless jamming of them. Additionally to this a small scale test bed system consisting of two LoRa nodes (an Arduino and a LoRa gateway), two WiFi nodes (a laptop and router) and a software defined radio frequency jammer (a HackRF One) were set up. Jamming was performed on the system and evaluated form the perspective of a typical industrial Internet of Things scenario. The testing on the system was done by measuring the received signal strength index, round trip time for a message and packet losses. The study showed that the WiFi communication broke down completely while the LoRa communication stood strong up to the jammer. This concluded that LoRa communication is secure for a typical Internet of Things scenario, from this particular jamming device, or a similar one.

Abstract:

The number of devices connected to the internet is constantly increasing and therefore putting more weight on the importance of low energy usage. LoRa which is the physical part of the LoRaWAN communication protocol that this paper focuses on is popular in the area of IoT because of its low energy usage. The purpose of this paper was to find out how the energy usage differentiate between two of the most commonly used LoRa frequencies 433MHz and 868MHz. LoRa is often used with battery driven components within IoT such as temperature or humidity sensors. It is of great importance to keep the maintenance cost for these devices to a minimum. And it is therefore important to find the most energy efficient solutions for communication between LoRa components. To get an answer from the purpose of this paper, two questions were formulated, and they were in turn answered by using an experimental research method. For the experiment, two devices were set up using: one transmitter combined with a current sensor and one receiver, both of which were capable of using either LoRa 433MHz or 868MHz. The experiment was then conducted by transmitting 1000 packages for every DR and both of the frequencies. The results were analysed in an empirical quantitative way which showed that the higher frequency of 868MHz consumed more energy in all of the experiments. One discovery that was quite interesting was that the difference could be mitigated by using different data rates. The result in this paper is intended to increase the knowledge regarding LoRa and its energy usage. This papers result can be used as a reference when choosing between what frequency and data rate to use when working with LoRa.

Abstract:

Greenhouse gas emissions in indoor or outdoor areas are dangerous and can have short- or long-term effects on people’s health. There are several methods to monitor the air quality in such environments. This thesis project attempts to design and evaluate a wireless sensor network with two main characteristics such as long range and low power consumption. The sensor network is built upon Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) protocol and is composed of sensor nodes and gateways. The sensor nodes are built upon a Raspberry Pi model 3B, a LoRa SX1276 transceiver and gas sensors. The sensors are intended to measure CO2, CH4, temperature, pressure and relative humidity. The collected data is then logged and sent to The Things Network (TTN) via a backhaul connection.

Abstract:

Humans are growing older which presents challenges for the health care system. One solution for allowing individuals to continue living in their home, despite age related dif- ficulties, is a sensor based surveillance system. These systems can monitor a number of parameters, for example motion or temperature. If certain limits are exceeded the sys- tem can notify family members or health care services. The aim of this project was to build a prototype of such a system which also had to be cheap and easy to install and maintain. The final prototype consists of a motion detection sensor in the bathroom, a temperature sensor around the kitchen stove and a temperature sensor for measurement of ambient room temperature. Each sensor is connected to its own Arduino and they are all programmed with different limits. The sensors communicate wirelessly with a central hub through the communication protocol LoRa. Once the central hub, which consists of a Raspberry Pi, receives a LoRa signal it sends an email to a chosen address. Människor blir allt äldre vilket är en utmaning för sjukvården. En lösning som tillåter individer att fortsätta bo i sina hem, trots åldersrelaterade svårigheter, är ett sensorba- serat övervakningssystem. Sådana system kan övervaka ett flertal parametrar, exemåelvis rörelse eller temperatur. Om vissa gränser överskrids kan systemet underrätta anhöriga eller hemtjänsten. Syftet med det här projektet var att bygga en prototyp av ett sådant system, som även skulle vara billig och enkel att installera och underhålla. Den slutgiltiga prototypen består av en rörelsedetektor i badrummet, en temperatursensor vid köksspisen och en sensor som mäter den omgivande temperaturen i ett rum. Varje sensor är kopp- lad till en egen Arduino och de är alla programmerade med olika gränsvärden. Sensorerna kommunicerar trådlöst med en centralenhet genom kommunikationsprotokollet LoRa. När centralenheten, som består av en Raspberry Pi, tar upp en LoRa-signal skickar den ett email till en vald adress.

Abstract:

LoRaWAN is a wireless network technology based on the LoRa modulation technology. When planning such a network, it is important to estimate the network’s coverage, which can be done by calculating path loss. To do this, one can utilize empirical models of radio wave propagation. Previous research has investigated the accuracy of such empirical models for LoRa inside cities. However, as the accuracy of these models is heavily dependent on the exact characteristics of the environment, it is of interest to validate these results. In addition, the effect of base station elevation on the models’ accuracy has yet to be researched. Following the problems stated above, the purpose of this study is to investigate the accuracy of empirical models of radio wave propagation for LoRa in an urban environment. More specifically, we investigate the accuracy of the models and the effect of base station elevation on the models’ accuracy. The latter is the main contribution of this study. To perform these investigations, a quantitative experiment was conducted in the city of Jönköping, Sweden. In the experiment a base station was positioned at elevations of 30, 23, and 15m. The path loss was measured from 20 locations around the base station for each level of elevation. The measured path loss was then compared to predictions from three popular empirical models: the Okumura-Hata model, the COST 231-Walfisch-Ikegami model, and the 3GPP UMa NLOS model. Our analysis showed a clear underestimation of the path loss for all models. We conclude that for an environment and setup similar to ours, models underestimate the path loss by approximately 20dB. They can be improved by adding a constant correction value, resulting in a mean absolute error of at least 3,7-5,6dB. We also conclude that the effect of base station elevation varies greatly between different models. The 3GPP model underestimated the path loss equally for all elevations and could therefore easily be improved by a constant correction value. This resulted in a mean absolute error of approximately 4dB for all elevations.

Abstract:

The Internet was initially built around networks based on physical cables, the next step to improve the accessibility of the Internet came with the introduction of wireless communication. the next step to improving accessibility to the Internet came with the introduction of wireless communication. Because the IoT products are wirelessly connected, they need an internal power source in the form of a battery. Many of the existing communication protocols are therefore not suitable for IoT solutions because they are power consuming. Alternatives to these communication protocols have therefore been developed, for example LTE-M, NB-IoT and LoRaWAN. The study was conducted in cooperation with Etteplan. Etteplan want to invest in LoRaWAN and thus want to gain deeper knowledge within LoRaWAN. Thus, it was chosen to investigate how different factors affect the signal strength transmission time in a LoRaWAN. The focus of the study has thus been on the communication between an IoT node and a receiver in a LoRaWAN, thus the purpose of the study: To show how different data rates, distances and environments affect the quality of information sent from an IoT node to a receiver in LoRaWAN. Design science research was used as a research method, in design science research an artefact is constructed and then studied. In this study, a LoRaWAN was constructed and the communication between an IoT node and receiver in this LoRaWAN was studied. To study the communication between the IoT node and the receiver, two experiments were performed. The experiments were performed simultaneously where the difference was in the data collected, one experiment collected the signal strength and the second the transmission time. The experiment was conducted in two different environments, one with a clear view and one with blockages. In the experiment, the IoT node was positioned at different distances with different data rates. The result of the study shows how different data rates, distances and environments affected the quality of information between an IoT node and receiver and how they relate to previous research. Data rate was the factor that affected the quality of the information most. Data rate had minimal impact on signal strength, but great impact on number of lost data packet and transmission times. The two different environments had no effect on the transmission time, but the signal strength was over 10 dbm lower in the urban environment than with clear view. The distance had no effect on transmission time and minimal impact on signal strength. Internet var i begynnelsen uppbyggt kring nätverk baserade på fysiska kablar, nästa steg för att förbättra tillgängligheten till Internet kom med introduktionen av trådlös kommunikation. Ett nytt begrepp dök upp vid millennieskiftet, Internet of Things (IoT). Tanken bakom IoT är att olika typer av produkter, som exempelvis tandborstar och kylskåp trådlöst kopplas upp mot Internet. Eftersom IoT-produkterna är trådlöst uppkopplade behöver de en intern strömkälla i form av ett batteri. Många av de existerande kommunikationsprotokollen lämpar sig därför inte för IoT-lösningar eftersom dessa är strömkrävande. Alternativ till dessa kommunikationsprotokoll har därför tagits fram, till exempel LTE-M, NB-IoT och LoRaWAN. Studien utfördes i samarbete med Etteplan. Etteplan vill satsa på LoRaWAN och vill därmed få en djupare kunskap inom LoRaWAN. Därmed valdes det att undersöka hur olika faktorer påverkar signalstyrkan och sändningstiden i ett LoRaWAN. Studiens fokus har därmed varit på kommunikationen mellan en IoT-nod och en mottagare i ett LoRaWAN, därmed är studiens syfte: Att visa på hur olika datahastigheter, avstånd och miljöer påverkar kvaliteten på informationen som sänds från en IoT-nod till en mottagare i ett LoRaWAN. Design science research användes som forskningsmetod då i design science research konstrueras en artefakt som att sedan undersöks. I studiens fall konstruerades ett LoRaWAN där sedan kommunikationen mellan en IoT-nod och mottagare i detta LoRaWAN studerades. För att studera kommunikationen mellan en IoT-nod och en mottagare utfördes två experiment. Experimenten utfördes samtidigt där skillnaden låg i datat som samlades in, det ena experimentet samlade in signalstyrkan och den andra sändningstiden. Experimentet utfördes i två olika miljöer, en med fri sikt och en med blockeringar. I experimentet positionerades IoT-noden på olika avstånd med olika datahastigheter. Resultatet från studien visar hur olika datahastigheter, avstånd och miljöer påverkade kvaliteten på informationen mellan en IoT-nod och mottagare och hur de relateras till tidigare forskning. Datahastigheten var den faktorn som påverkade kvaliteten på informationen mest. Datahastigheten hade minimal påverkan på signalstyrkan, men stor påverkan på antal förlorade datapaket och sändningstider. De två olika miljöerna hade ingen påverkan på sändningstiden, men signalstyrkan var över 10 dbm lägre i stadsmiljön än med fri sikt. Avståndet hade ingen påverkan på sändningstiden och minimal påverkan på signalstyrkan.

Abstract:

Les transmissions radio à longue portée et basse énergie ouvrent de nouveaux champs d'application pour les capteurs, en particulier pour la surveillance de l'environnement. Le protocole radio LoRa permet, par exemple, de connecter des capteurs à une distance pouvant aller jusqu'à dix kilomètres en ligne de visée. Cependant, la grande surface couverte amène plusieurs difficultés, telles que le placement spatial en regard de la topologie géographique, ou la variabilité de la latence des communications. Le positionnement dans I'environnement comporte également des contraintes liées à I'intérêt des points de mesure du phénomène physique. Les critères de conception de ces réseaux tranchent donc avec les méthodes existantes (disques) quand on s'attaque aux terrains complexes. Cette thèse décrit des techniques de simulation basées sur I'analyse géographique cellulaire pour calculer les couvertures radio à longue portée et déduire les caractéristiques radios dans ces situations. Comme la propagation radio n'est qu'un cas particulier de phénomènes physiques, on montre qu'une approche unifiée cellulaire permet de caractériser beaucoup de comportements physiques potentiels. Le cas des fortes pluies et des inondations est étudié. L'analyse de la géographie est réalisée en utilisant des outils de segmentation pour produire des systèmes cellulaires qui sont à leur tour traduits en code pour des calculs de haute performance. La thèse fournit des résultats d'expériences de terrain complexes pratiques en utilisant LoRa, permettant de qualifier l'exactitude de la simulation des couvertures, et les caractéristiques d'ordonnancement des communications. Nous produisons des tables de performance pour les simulations sur les unités de traitement graphique (GPUs) qui montrent que le choix d'une algorithmique parallèle est pertinent sur ces problèmes Long-range radio transmissions open new sensor application fields, in particular for environment monitoring. For example, the LoRa radio protocol enables to connect remote sensors at distance as long as ten kilometers in a line-of-sight. However, the large area covered also brings several difficulties, such as the placement of sensing devices in regard to topology in geography, or the variability of communication latency. Sensing the environment also carries constraints related to the inlerest of sensing points in relation with a physical phenomenon. Thus criteria for designs are evolving a lot from the existing methods, especially in complex terrains. This thesis describes simulation techniques based on geography analysis to compute long-range radio coverages and radio characteristics in these situations. As radio propagation is just a particular case of physical phenomena, it is shown how a unified approach also allows to characterize the behavior of potential physical risks. The case of heavy rainfall and flooding is investigated. Geography analysis is achieved using segmentation tools to produce cellular systems which are in turn translated into code for high-þerformance computations. The thesis provides results from practical complex terrain experiments using LoRa which confirm the accuracy of the simulation, and scheduling characteristics for sample networks. Performance tables are produced for these simulations on current Graphics Processing Units (GPUs)

Abstract:

The thesis is about the construction of a GPS-tracker that can read NFC (Near Field Communication)-tags and communicate with LoRa (Long Range) and BLE (Bluetooth low energy) and investigate which of the components in the GPS-tracker that consumes most power. The usage area for the GPS-tracker is to make the work on disaster affected sites more efficient and secure by having an operation leader that can organizing the operation with help of the information provided by the GPS-trackers that are placed on the injured people and recuing personnel. The GPS-tracker is built around the sensor development kit Thingy:52 from Nordic Semiconductor. The Firmware (FW) for the Thingy:52 is developed by modifying the provided factory FW by Nordic Semiconductor. The GPS-module and the NFC-reader showed to be the most power consuming parts of the GPS-tracker. An energy optimization proposal for these parts are given in the report. A proposal to a circuit diagram for the GPS-tracker is also given in the report, that can be used for future miniaturization of the GPS-tracker. Projektet har innefattat att ta fram en GPS-spårsändare som kan läsa NFC (Near Field Communication)-taggar, kommunicera med LoRa (Long Range) och BLE (Bluetooth low energy) samt undersöka vilka av GPS-spårsändarens olika delar som konsumerar mest energi. Användningsområdet för GPS-spårsändaren är att effektivisera räddningsinsatser på skadeplatser där det finns skadade människor exempelvis efter en översvämning eller terroristattack. Effektiviseringen är tänkt ska ske genom att en operationsledare styr räddningsinsatsen med hjälp av informationen som skickas från GPS-spårsändarna som kommer att bäras av skadade personer och räddningspersonalen på skadeplatsen. GPS-spårsändaren är utvecklad kring sensorutvecklings kittet Thingy:52 från Nordic Semiconductor och dess mjukvara har utvecklats genom att modifiera den mjukvara som Nordic Semiconductor har utvecklat för Thingy:52. De delar av GPS-spårsändaren som visade sig konsumera mest energi var GPS-modulen och NFC-läsaren. I rapporten finns energioptimerings förslag för dessa delar. Rapporten innehåller även ett förslag till ett kretsschema för GPS-spårsändaren som kan användas vid framtida miniatyrisering av GPS-spårsändaren.

Abstract:

Internet of Things(IoT) tillämpningar har ökat under de senaste åren och därför behövs nya kommunikationstekniker som uppfyller kriterierna låg strömförbrukning, lång räckvidd samt låg kostnad, som behövs för att distribuera tekniken i samhället. LoRa (Long Range) är en framstående trådlös kommunikationsteknik som utvecklades av LoRa Alliance för att uppfylla dessa kriterier. Syftet med arbetet är att utveckla en mätmetod för prestandaanalys av radiosystemet LoRa. Mätmetoden används sedan för att analysera hur olika parametrar som datahastighet, avstånd och olika miljöer påverkar LoRa-nätverksprestandaparametrar dvs. signalstyrka, paketförluster, fördröjningar (latency) och fördröjningsvariationer (jitter). För att uppnå syftet utvecklades först en mätningsmetod. Därefter genomfördes experiment i två olika miljöer (stadsmiljö och havsmiljö) för prestandaanalys av LoRa. I varje experiment positionerades en IoT-nod på olika avstånd och datapaket skickades med olika datahastigheter från IoT-noden till en gateway. Datahastigheten ändrades genom att ändra på spridningsfaktor (SF) och bandbredd. Passiv mätningsmetod användes för att samla in mätningsdata. Metoden som användes för att analysera resultaten var statistisk dataanalysmetod då de data som samlades in var kvantitativa. Resultatet visar att signalstyrkan påverkas av miljö, avstånd och bandbredd. Signalstyrkan är starkare i fri sikt jämfört med stadsmiljö. Signalstyrkan är starkare även vid kortare avstånd och större bandbredd. Däremot har datahastigheten (SF) minimal påverkan på signalstyrkan. Att signalstyrkan påverkas av bandbredden är intressant resultat som inte kunde förutses innan. Paketförlusten påverkas av miljö, datahastighet (SF och bandbredd) och avstånd. Fler datapaket förloras vid längre avstånd och i stadsmiljön. Lägre datahastighet leder till att färre datapaket förloras och på så sätt längre kommunikationsräckvidd uppnås. Enligt tidigare arbetens simuleringar förutsågs att högre datahastighet leder till längre kommunikationsräckvidd men i den här studien genomfördes experiment på riktig hårdvara för att undersöka resultaten. Miljö, avstånd och datahastighet påverkar fördröjningen. Fördröjningen är några millisekunder längre i stadsmiljö än havsmiljö vid samma avstånd. Fördröjningen är även några millisekunder längre vid längre avstånd i samma miljö. Däremot har datahastighet största påverkan på fördröjningen. Fördröjningen ändras med några hundra millisekunder när datahastigheten ändras genom SF och/eller bandbredd. Fördröjningsvariationen påverkas inte av miljö och avstånd. Datahastighet (bandbredd och SF) påverkar fördröjningsvariationen men denna påverkan är låg och man kan bortse från den. The Internet of Things (IoT) use cases have increased significantly in recent years. Therefore, new wireless communication technologies are needed that meet the criteria such as low power consumption, long range and low cost. LoRa, which stands for "Long Range", is a wireless communication technology developed by the LoRa Alliance to meet these criteria. The purpose of this paper is to a develop measurement method for performance analysis of the LoRa radio system. The measurement method used to analyze how different parameters such as data rate, distance and different environments affect LoRa network performance parameters i.e. signal strength, packet loss, latency and jitter. To achieve the purpose, a measurement method and prototype were first developed. Then experiments were carried out in two different environments (urban and open space). In each experiment, an IoT node was positioned at different distances and data packets were sent from the IoT node to a gateway with different data rates. The data rate was changed by changing the spreading factor (SF) and bandwidth. Passive measurement method was used to collect measurement data. The method used to analyze the results was the statistical data analysis method since the data collected was quantitative. The result shows that the signal strength is affected by the environment, distance and bandwidth. The signal strength is stronger in free view compared to urban environment. The signal strength is stronger even at shorter distances and greater bandwidth. However, the data rate (SF) has minimal impact on signal strength. The fact that the signal strength is affected by the bandwidth is interesting results that could not be predicted before. The packet loss is affected by the environment, data rate and distance. More data packets go lost at longer distances and in the urban environment. Lower data rate cause to fewer data packets go lost and a longer communication range being achieved. According to earlier work's simulations, it was possible to predict that higher data rates lead to longer communication range, but in this study experiments were carried out on real hardware to investigate the results. Environment, distance and data rate affect the delay. The delay is a few milliseconds longer in urban environment than the free space environment at the same distance. The delay is also a few milliseconds longer at longer distances in the same environment. However, data rate has the greatest impact on the delay. The delay changes by a few hundred milliseconds when the data rate is changed by SF and/or bandwidth. The jitter is not affected by the environment and distance. Data rate (bandwidth and SF) affects the delay variation but this influence is low and can be ignored.

Memoria para optar al título de Ingeniero Civil Eléctrico El paradigma de comunicación Internet of Things (IoT), el cual plantea la posibilidad de interconectar objetos cotidianos y toda clase de dispositivos convencionales a Internet, está actualmente en pleno desarrollo. El gran número de nodos que se espera conectar a Internet exige a su vez la implementación a gran escala de Internet Protocol versión 6 (IPv6). IoT busca el desarrollo de nuevas aplicaciones y ha impulsado la creación de nuevas arquitecturas de red y nuevas clases de dispositivos. Las redes Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) han surgido recientemente como una evolución natural del concepto Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), redes de sensores in- terconectadas. A la luz del IoT, las nuevas redes LPWAN abren un nuevo campo de desarrollo, principalmente enfocado en servicios de monitoreo y afines que se desarrollen en áreas am- plias y no requieran grandes tasas de transferencia. Los dispositivos LPWAN se caracterizan por ser de bajo consumo energético y de bajo costo, facilitando su despliegue masivo por largos períodos sin necesidad de recargar sus baterías. Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) es una de las primeras y principales tec- nologías LPWAN, y presenta una gran flexibilidad que la hace ideal para redes de diseño propio. En América funciona en la banda industrial, científica y médica (ISM) alrededor de los 915 MHz. El grupo de trabajo para la implementación de IPv6 sobre redes LPWAN (lpwan WG) perteneciente al Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) se encuentra actualmente desarrol- lando un mecanismo de compresión y fragmentación de paquetes IPv6 para redes LPWAN denominado Static Context Header Compression (SCHC). El esquema de compresión se en- cuentra terminado, pero aún no ha sido implementado ni evaluado de manera oficial. En este trabajo se presenta una plataforma experimental para la implementación y eval- uación del mecanismo SCHC sobre una red LoRaWAN consistente en un nodo terminal Mi- crochip y un Radio Gateway (RG) de Everynet. En su desarrollo se han integrado múltiples y diversas herramientas del campo de las Telecomunicaciones y las Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación (ICT). La plataforma creada logra una implementación básica pero exitosa del esquema de com- presión de SCHC. Por medio de ella se ha llevado a cabo una evaluación preliminar del funcionamiento de SCHC, analizando el nivel de compresión logrado por el mecanismo para tres contextos de comunicación característicos de una red LPWAN. Los resultados obtenidos son positivos.

Abstract:

In the Internet of things (IoT), many applications will require low-power and low-cost to achieve long lifetime and scale (respectively). These types of applications are referred to as massive IoT, as opposed to critical IoT, which emphasizes ultra-high reliability and availability and low latency. One type of network catering to massive IoT applications are Low-Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs), and presently, many LPWAN standards are trying to assert their role in the IoT ecosystem. This thesis explores LPWANs from both technical and non-technical perspectives to ascertain their use-case versatility and influence on the future telecommunications’ landscape. With respect to spectrum, the studied LPWANs may be categorized as unlicensed LPWAN or licensed LPWAN. The prior category typically refers to proprietary solutions and in this thesis are represented by SigFox and LoRaWAN. The latter group includes EC-GSM-IoT, eMTC, and NB-IoT and can be considered synonymous with cellular LPWAN because they are designed to be integrated into existing cellular infrastructures. The results indicate that all of the different types of explored LPWANs support applications without strict downlink, payload size, and latency requirements. For use cases without these specific demands (typically sensors, meters, tracking, etc.), it is not a question of whether or not a network fulfills the requirements, but rather how flexible the requirements are. As a result the choice of network will be determined by non-technical aspects and a cost versus functionality trade-off where unlicensed LPWAN is typically cheaper. Hence, both categories of LPWANs offer a unique value proposition; therefore, they can be considered complementary. This notion is reinforced when looking at non-technical aspects such as ecosystem, regulation, network ownership and control, and network coordination, which differ quite significantly. Furthermore, unlicensed LPWANs are likely to be the vanguard of a new type of competitor offering the core service of connectivity. Inom Internet of Things (IoT) kommer många applikationer att kräva låg effekt och låg kostnad för att uppnå en lång livstid och skala. Dessa typer av applikationer refereras till som massiv IoT, vilket står i motsats till kritisk IoT som kräver ultrahög tillförlitlighet och tillgänglighet och låg fördröjning. En typ av nätverk som ämnar tillgodose kraven av massiv IoT är Low-Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs), och idag försöker många av dessa hävda sig inom IoT ekosystemet. Detta examensarbete undersöker LPWANs from ett teknisk och icke-tekniskt perspektiv för att utröna deras mångsidighet och påverkan på det framtida telekomlandskapet. Med avseende på spektrum kan de i detta examensarbete undersökta nätverken kategoriseras som olicensierat LPWAN eller licensierat LPWAN. Den tidigare hänvisar typiskt till proprietära lösningar och representeras i detta arbete av SigFox och LoRaWAN. Den senare kategorin består av EC-GSM-IoT, eMTC, och NB-IoT och kan betraktas som synonymt med mobil LPWAN eftersom de designade för att bli integrerade i existerande mobila nätverk. Därför kommer valet av nätverk att bestämmas av icke-tekniska aspekter och en avvägning mellan kostnad och funktionalitet vari olicensierat LPWAN är vanligtvis billigare. Därmed erbjuder båda kategorier av nätverk en unik värde proposition och kan därför betraktas som komplementerande. Denna föreställning är förstärkt av att nätverken skiljer sig signifikant när det gäller deras icke-tekniska aspekter såsom ekosystem, reglering, ägandeskap och kontroll, och nätverks koordinering. Dessutom är olicensierade LPWANs troligen är förtruppen av en ny typ av konkurrent som erbjuder den grundläggande servicen av konnektivitet.

Les progrès des technologies de communication à faible consommation d’énergie et à faible cout ont révolutionne les applications de télédétection et de surveillance. L’Internet des objets (IoT) a promis la création d’un écosystème d’appareils connectes à travers un large éventail d’applications, telles que les villes intelligentes. A l’heure actuelle, de nombreuses normes et technologies concurrentes tentent de saisir l’IoT, en particulier dans le domaine des technologies de télédétection et de communication. LoRa (Long Range) est l’une de ces technologies qui gagne en popularité et en attraction dans les réseaux de capteurs sans fil (WSN). La possibilité d’établir des communications longue distance avec des nœuds relativement simples, une infrastructure minimale, des besoins en énergie réduits et l’utilisation de bandes ISM sans licence offre un avantage concurrentiel significatif. Bien que la portée de communication dans LoRa puisse dépasser 15 kilomètres en visibilité directe, le débit binaire maximal pouvant être atteint est limite à quelques kilobits par seconde. De plus, lorsqu’une collision se produit dans LoRa, le débit est encore réduit en raison de pertes de trames et de retransmissions. Les travaux de cette thèse traitent le problème des collisions dans LoRa qui peuvent survenir sous une charge importante et qui dégradent les performances du réseau.Premièrement, nous considérons le contexte des communications en liaison montante dans LoRaWAN. Nous étudions le contexte des signaux LoRa en collision synchronisée, ou chaque appareil terminal doit retransmettre toute sa trame en collision après qu’une collision se produit dans LoRa. Ce comportement diminue le débit global et augmente la consommation d’énergie des terminaux et le délai des trames. Pour cette raison, afin d’atténuer les effets néfastes des collisions, nous avons proposé un algorithme de décodage pour résoudre les signaux LoRa en collision synchronisée, dans un trafic réseau sature et confirme. Nous avons remplacé le modèle de retransmission conventionnel de LoRa en un modèle faisant en sorte que les dispositifs terminaux transmettent des bitmaps au lieu de retransmettre des trames entières pour déterminer les symboles corrects de chaque trame en collision. Notre algorithme a pu améliorer significativement le débit global de la couche LoRaWAN MAC à base de LoRa, et diminuer la consommation d’énergie des émetteurs et le délai des trames.Deuxièmement, nous considérons le contexte des communications en liaison descendante dans LoRaWAN. Nous avons remarqué que la liaison descendante dans LoRa est un goulot d’étranglements. Nous avons donc travaillé sur la sélection de la passerelle par le serveur de réseau et son impact sur le débit, la consommation d’énergie et le délai. Nous avons étudié trois types de déploiement de passerelle et nous avons montre que les performances du système dépendent de ce déploiement. Nous avons montré que l’équilibrage du nombre de terminaux par passerelle (également connu sous le nom de charge) améliore le débit par rapport au choix de la passerelle avec la meilleure qualité de signal. En outre, nous avons montré que la combinaison de la charge et de la qualité du signal n’améliore pas davantage le débit. De plus, nous avons montré que le choix de la passerelle avec la meilleure qualité de signal diminue le délai des trames et la consommation d’énergie des terminaux par rapport au choix de la passerelle avec la charge la plus faible The progress in low-energy, low-cost communication technologies have revolutionized remote sensing and monitoring applications. Internet of Things (IoT) has promised an ecosystem of connected devices across a wide range of applications such as in smart cities.Currently, many competing standards and technologies are attempting to seize the IoT, particularly in the area of remote sensing and communication technologies. LoRa (Long Range) is one of those technologies that is gaining popularity and attraction in the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) applications. The ability to make long-distance communications with relatively simple nodes, minimal infrastructure, reduced power requirements, and the use of unlicensed ISM bands provides a significant competitive advantage. Although the communication range in LoRa can exceed 15 kilometers in line of sight, the maximum bit rate that can be achieved is limited to few kilobits per second. Additionally, when a collision occurs in LoRa, the throughput is further reduced due to frame losses and retransmissions. The work of this thesis deals with the problem of collisions in LoRa that may occur under heavy load, and which degrade the performance of the network.First, we consider the context for LoRaWAN uplink communications. We study the context of fully synchronized colliding LoRa signals, where each end-device has to retransmit its entire colliding frame after a collision occurs in LoRa. This behavior decreases the overall throughput, and increases the energy consumption of the end-devices, and the delay of the frames. Therefore, in order to mitigate the damaging effects of collisions, we proposed a decoding algorithm to resolve synchronized colliding LoRa signals, in a saturated and confirmed network traffic. We substituted the conventional retransmission model of LoRa by having end-devices transmitting bitmaps instead of retransmitting whole frames to determine the correct symbols of each colliding frame. Our algorithm was able to significantly improve the overall throughput of the LoRaWAN MAC layer based on LoRa, and to decrease the energy consumption of the transmitters and the delay of the frames.Second, we consider the context for LoRaWAN downlink communications. We noticed that the downlink in LoRa is a bottleneck. Hence, we worked on the gateway selection by the network server and its impact on the throughput, the energy consumption and the delay. We studied three types of gateway deployment and we show that the system performance depends on this deployment. We showed that balancing the number of end-devices per gateway (also known as load) improves the throughput compared to choosing the gateway with the highest signal quality. Moreover, we showed that combining load and signal quality does not further improve the throughput. In addition, we showed that choosing the gateway with the highest signal quality decreases the delay and energy consumption compared to choosing the gateway with the lowest load

This thesis was carried out in the context of a project developed by the university of Bologna upon commission of GD SpA, aimed at providing a new proprietary solution for a Industrial Internet of Things monitoring application. The focus is on the definition and implementation of a wireless communication protocol, which has been called LoRaIN, based on LoRa technology at 2,4 GHz and suitable for Industry 4.0 applications. LoraIN proposes a centralized approach to Network management, with a single entity keeping synchronization among devices and scheduling all the transmissions according to separated time slots, in order to avoid collisions. Distinctive features of the protocol are also its multi-hopping functionality and the possibility to deploy batteryless devices, charged via Wireless Power Transfer technology. Numerical results reported in the thesis demonstrate how LoRaIN protocol meets the application requirements.

Dans cette thèse, nous explorons des aspects performances de LoRa, l’une des technologies prometteuses pour des équipments IoT. LoRa appartient à une nouvelle classede réseaux appelés “Low Power Wide Area Networks” (LPWAN) et définit une couchede radio spécifique basée sur la modulation “Chirp Spread Spectrum” et une méthodesimple d’accès appelée LoRaWAN. Le fonctionnement de LoRaWAN est similaire àALOHA: un appareil se réveille et envoie immédiatement un paquet à une passerelle.Ce choix de la méthode d’accès a un impact important sur la capacité de LoRa et sonévolutivité vers un grand nombre d’appareils. Il en résulte un niveau élevé de paquetsperdus suite aux collisions à mesure que le nombre d’appareils augmente.Motivés par ces défis, nous avons conçu et mis en œuvre deux méthodes d’accèsaméliorées pour LoRa. Tout d’abord, nous avons proposé d’appliquer la technique“Carrier Sense Multiple Access” (CSMA) à LoRa pour diminuer le nombre de collisions. Nous avons utilisé le simulateur NS-3 pour évaluer le schéma et les résultatsde la simulation montrent que CSMA réduit considérablement le taux de collisionstout en n’augmentant que légèrement la consommation d’énergie. Ensuite, nous avonsproposé Timemaps, une nouvelle méthode d’accès pour améliorer les performances deLoRa. L’idée est de construire une carte temporelle de toutes les transmissions dans lapasserelle et distribuer le planning de transmission lors de l’opération d’attachementd’un équipement au réseau. La carte temporelle permet un chevauchement des transmissions effectués avec des facteurs d’étalement différents. Comme des appareils allouent un facteur d’étalement en fonction de l’éloignement croissant de la passerelle,les transmissions deviennent orthogonales, ce qui conduit à une augmentation globalede la capacité du réseau.Nous avons utilisé le simulateur NS-3 pour évaluer la méthode de Timemaps dansdeux cas: des horloges parfaites et des horloges avec une dérive. La simulation prend encompte la quasi-orthogonalité des transmissions avec différents facteurs d’étalement etl’effet de capture. Les résultats montrent que Timemaps bénéficie d’un taux de livraison de paquets remarquablement plus élevé et du taux de collisions considérablementplus faible par rapport à LoRaWAN avec une consommation d’énergie modérémentaugmentée.Pour valider les deux schémas proposés, nous avons développé un module NS-3qui simule l’opération de LoRa à grain fin. It results in a high level of packet losses due to collisions as the number ofdevices increases.Motivated by these challenges, we have designed and implemented enhanced access methods to improve LoRa performance. First, we have taken advantage of CarrierSense Multiple Access (CSMA) to lower the collision ratio. We have used the NS-3 simulator to evaluate the scheme and the simulation results show that CSMA considerablylowers the collision ratio while only slightly increasing energy consumption. Second, wehave proposed Timemaps, a new access method for improving the performance of LoRa.The idea is to build a temporal map of all transmissions of IoT devices by a Gatewayand distribute the schedule during join. Schedules admit overlapping transmissions ofdifferent spreading factors and as devices usually allocate a spreading factor in functionof the increasing distance from the Gateway, transmissions will be in fact orthogonal,which leads to increased overall capacity of the network.We have used the NS-3 simulator to evaluate Timemaps in both cases of perfect clocks and clocks with a drift.The simulation takes into account quasi-orthogonality of transmissions with differentspreading factors and the capture effect. The results show that Timemaps benefitsfrom remarkably higher packet delivery ratio and considerably lower the collision ratiocompared to LoRaWAN along with moderately increased energy consumption.To validate both schemes we have developed an NS-3 module that simulates thefine-grain LoRa operation. O típico cenário de Smart City tem de lidar com desafios, tais como as elevadas quantidades de sensores e geradores de dados, dos quais alguns são colocados em dispositivos de grande mobilidade, visando a recolha e geração de todo o tipo de informações e levando ao aumento do número de dispositivos comunicantes. Esta dissertação foca o desenvolvimento e implementação de uma plataforma heterogénea de sonorização ambiental com o objectivo de servir de infraestrutura para aplicações no âmbito das Smart Cities. Esta pretende tirar proveito da utilização de múltiplas tecnologias de comunicação, nomeadamente tecnologias de longo e curto alcance. Para al em disto, visto que a plataforma visa ambientes urbanos, esta tira proveito de uma rede oportunista e tolerante a atrasos, Delay Tolerant Network (DTN), através de entidades m oveis que circulam pela cidade, nomeadamente bicicletas. Assim sendo, esta dissertação propõe: (1) o desenho e desenvolvimento da rede e dos seus constituintes; (2) uma extensão a um protocolo de controlo de acesso ao meio, Medium Access Control (MAC), para a tecnologia LoRa com o objectivo de o dotar compatível para ambientes de gateways múltiplas; (3) novas estratégias de encaminhamento para a rede tolerante a atrasos, tendo em consideração a topologia e as características apresentadas por esta. As avaliações realizadas permitiram concluir que o protocolo MAC para LoRa em ambientes de gateways múltiplas proposto contribui para um aumento da escalabilidade da rede, bem como para uma melhoria do seu desempenho. Relativamente às estratégias de encaminhamento propostas para a DTN, os testes realizados permitiram avaliar o impacto que cada estratégia tem sobre o comportamento da rede, nomeadamente a taxa de entrega dos pacotes de dados, a sobrecarga da rede, o número de pacotes transmitidos, entre outros. Com estes resultados foi possível perceber as in- suficiências que as funcionalidades propostas têm sobre a solução geral, e identificar as caraterísticas necessárias de uma solução escalável para a recolha de dados massivos num ambiente de IoT. The Smart City concept is the combination of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm under an urban context with the exploitation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) solutions. The typical Smart City scenario has to deal with an extensive amount of sensors and data generators, some of them placed in high mobile devices, deployed to collect and generate all type of information which will increase the number of communicating machines. This dissertation focuses on the development and implementation of a heterogeneous environmental sensing platform to serve as an infrastructure for Smart City applications. It aims to take advantage of the use of multiple communication technologies, namely long and short range. Being within an urban environment, the platform bene ts from an opportunistic and Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) through mobile entities that travel over the city, such as bicycles. Therefore, this dissertation proposes: (1) the design and development of the network and its elements; (2) an extension to a LoRa Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol in order to endow it with capabilities to operate in multi-gateway environments; and lastly, (3) new forwarding strategies for the opportunistic network that takes into consideration the network topology. The performed evaluations showed that the proposed multi-gateway LoRa MAC protocol contributes to increase the LoRa network scalability, as well as its performance. The performed tests to the proposed DTN forwarding strategies evaluate the impact of each strategy on the network behavior, namely the delivery ratio, network overhead, number of transmitted packets, among others. As a result, it is possible to perceive which are the in- uences introduced by the proposed functionalities on the overall solution, and identify the characteristics of a scalable solution to collect massive data in an IoT environment.

Cette thèse traite le problème de garantir la qualité de service (QoS) dans l'internet des objets (IoT) en termes d’urgence et de fiabilité. Pour atteindre cet objectif, nous avons proposé différentes solutions adaptées aux réseaux étendus LoRa (LoRaWAN). Premièrement, nous mettons en œuvre un découpage virtuel du réseau LoRa en plusieurs tranches et nous évaluons son impact en utilisant plusieurs stratégies statiques et dynamiques. Les résultats des simulations exécutés sur NS3 ont prouvé l'efficacité de l'isolation virtuelle des ressources physiques pour une tranche d'un réseau ayant des communications urgentes en réduisant l'impact venant des autres communications IoT. Motivés par ces résultats, une méthode d'optimisation est ensuite proposée pour chercher une meilleure configuration des nœuds LoRa en regardant plus en détail leur paramètres au niveau de la couche physique permettant d’améliorer ses performances en termes de QoS, de fiabilité et d’efficacité énergétique. Par contre, même avec le découpage du réseau en tranches virtuels, l’évolutivité de LoRa reste un défi en raison du manque de flexibilité lors de la gestion des réseaux sans fil actuels. Par conséquent, pour atteindre l'objectif global de garantir une bonne QoS dans un réseau IoT à grande échelle, les technologies SDN et le découpage virtuel du réseau sont adoptés simultanément pour proposer une architecture virtualisée et distribuée. Cette dernière proposition est basée sur la théorie des jeux et s'adapte plus rapidement aux changements dans un environnement IoT encombré en exploitant la prise de décision du découpage du réseau et la configuration des nœuds LoRa à la périphérie du réseau This thesis deals with the problem of guaranteeing heterogeneous quality of service (QoS) requirements for Internet of Things (IoT) communications in terms of urgency and reliability. Various solutions are proposed towards achieving this goal in LoRa Wide Area Networks (LoRaWAN). First, we implement network slicing over LoRa standard architecture and evaluate its impact using various static and dynamic strategies. Simulation Results performed over NS3 proved the efficiency of network slicing in isolating physical resources for each slice and serving delay critical communications. Motivated by these results, a slice-based optimization is proposed next to improve the dynamic slicing strategy by investigating more LoRa parameters at the physical layer. The proposed method finds for each device the best parameters configuration that potentially improves the performance of its slice in terms of QoS, reliability and energy efficiency. Moreover, we also looked towards meeting upcoming challenges in future IoT networks that comes from the increasing number of IoT devices. Even with network slicing, LoRa scalability remained as a big challenge that should be carefully considered especially due to the lack of flexibility in managing current wireless networks. Therefore, to meet the global objective in guaranteeing QoS in large scale IoT deployments, software defined networking (SDN) and network slicing are adopted as backbone technologies for a distributed virtualized architecture and slicing strategy. Spesso viene sprecata senza ritegno nei momenti in cui vi è abbondanza per poi trovarsi a doverne limitare l’uso nei periodi di siccità. In particolare, focalizzandoci sullo scenario agricolo, è possibile rilevare consumi di acqua anche al di sopra del 50% superiori al reale fabbisogno del terreno e delle colture. Questi sprechi possono essere dovuti a diverse motivazioni, come per esempio impianti di irrigazione mal progettati, sistemi di distribuzione e conteggio empirici etc… L’obiettivo di questo progetto è il voler eliminare tutti gli errori derivati da approssimazioni nel conteggio della quantità di acqua distribuita. Per permettere questo è stato quindi sviluppato un contatore di flusso, denominato Flow Meter, in grado di garantire una precisione al centinaio di litri nel conteggio. I punti di forza di questo sistema sono, oltre che la sufficiente precisione di conteggio, la possibilità di trasmettere i dati a lungo raggio grazie all’utilizzo della tecnologia di trasmissione a radiofrequenza LoRa, in combinazione con il bassissimo costo energetico del modulo che lo rende in grado di poter sopravvivere a lungo con un solo pacco batteria. Questo dispositivo è stato poi inserito all’interno del progetto SWAMP (Smart Water Management Platform), mettendolo in condizione di poter coesistere in un ambiente eterogeneo di sensori, i cui dati vengono resi disponibili in una piattaforma di gestione online.

Abstract:

New innovations, technologies, ideas and businesses are driving the realisation of the Internet of Things (IoT) vision. As with many other fields in technology comes competing protocols and standards, ranging from modulation schema used for transmitting data to security standards used to ensure safe operation and the privacy needs for all involved entities. This thesis looks into one of the competing modulation schema and network protocols for IoT applications: the LoRaWAN protocol. The main contribution of this thesis is a datadriven empirical study that helps verify theoretically obtained results from other authors. Our results also suggest that as long as other signals on the same frequency band uses different modulation techniques (or just other parameters for the same modulation technique), then only the signal to noise ratio is affected without introducing collisions. This affects the scalability and overall practical distance covered by a LoRaWAN. Our general conclusion is that the LoRaWAN as a technology/protocol has its disadvantages, mainly how heavily different traffic profiles may affect the scalability of it and a general lack of hard quality of service guarantees.

La détection sans fil a évolué depuis la découverte de la détection radar en 1886. L’analyse des réflexions électromagnétiques d’objets a ouvert la voie à un large éventail d’applications allant de la localisation de cibles à longue distance pour la navigation civile et militaire à la surveillance du vent et des précipitations les prévisions météo à la détection de vitesse pour la sécurité routière. Cependant, pendant très longtemps, la détection sans fil a rarement été utilisée pour des applications centrées sur l’homme en raison de limitations techniques, d’impraticabilité ou de coût. L’introduction des réseaux sans fil a suscité́ un nouvel intérêt pour le développement de nouveaux services de détection sans fil en raison de leur souplesse et de leur polyvalence. L’intégration de ces fonctionnalités contribuerait à résoudre certains problèmes de société importants. La localisation, la détection de mouvements et la surveillance des signes vitaux ont un grand potentiel pour promouvoir le vieillissement en bonne santé, la sécurité publique et le commerce. La détection sans contact offre un degré de liberté appréciable, permettant de surveiller à distance les personnes âgées isolées sans entraver leur vie quotidienne. Elle pourrait aider les services de sécurité publique à dénombrer les foules et à détecter les survivants à l’intérieur des bâtiments en cas d’urgence. Les commerces de détail et les établissements publics tireraient parti d’une localisation active et passive pour offrir une expérience améliorée à leurs visiteurs et faciliter leurs efforts logistiques. Cette thèse aborde le problème de l’exploitation des réseaux sans fil commerciaux pour les applications de détection : L’un des défis de la surveillance sans fil consiste à détecter l’orientation d’une personne avec précision. Tandis que d’autres travaux fournissent des solutions à granularité grossière pour résoudre de tels problèmes, nous utilisons les techniques de radar MIMO pour fournir un système d’estimation d’orientation précis pour lesinfrastructures Wi-Fi. Plus précisément, nous analysons les informations de phase des signaux reçus sur le réseau d’antennes afin de calculer le cap d’un terminal Wi-Fi. Un deuxième défi consiste à fournir un système de positionnement précis aux systèmes LPWAN afin de maintenir la cohérence des informations des capteurs déployés. Les solutions actuelles sont complexes, coûteuses ou consomment beaucoup d’énergie. Pour résoudre ce problème, nous introduisons les fonctions MIMO dans les systèmes LoRa LPWAN afin de permettre une localisation précise avec des coûts de démarrage limités. Nous activons l’estimation de l’angle d’arrivée en utilisant une deuxième antenne sur la passerelle LoRaWAN. Nous prouvons également l’utilité de ces informations pour augmenter l’efficacité des communications sans fil. Un troisième défi pour la localisation sans fil est l’inefficacité des approches actuelles basées sur un modèle en cas de conditions de non-visibilité et la rigidité des approches basées sur les données en cas de changements d’environnement de propagation. Pour relever ce défi, nous proposons une nouvelle solution de localisation passive pilotée par les données afin de remédier aux limitations des techniques de localisation basées sur un modèle. Pour donner vie à de tels systèmes et leur donner une chance d’impact sur notre quotidien, nous devons promouvoir la réutilisabilité et la reproductibilité. Analyzing electromagnetic reflections from objects opened the way for a wide range of applications spanning from locating long-range targets for navigation and military to monitoring wind and precipitation for weather-forecasting to velocity detection for public safety. However, for the longest time, its usefulness was seldom for human-centric applications because of technical limitations, impracticality or costliness. Introducing wireless networks awakened a newfound interest in developing new wireless sensing services for their seamlessness and versatility. Integrating such functionalities would contribute to resolving some prominent societal issues. Localization, motion detection, and vital signs monitoring have great potential for promoting healthy aging, public safety, and retail. Contactless sensing offers an appreciable degree of freedom, enabling remote monitoring of the isolated elderly without hampering their daily lives. It could assist public safety services for crowd counting and detection of survivors inside buildings during emergencies. Retail and public facilities would benefit from passive and active localization to offer an enhanced experience to their visitors and to help their logistical efforts. This thesis addresses the problem of leveraging commercial off-the-shelf wireless networks for sensing applications: One challenge for wireless monitoring is to detect the attitude of a person accurately. While other works provide coarse-grained solutions for resolving such issues, we use MIMO radar techniques to provide an accurate orientation estimation system for Wi-Fi infrastructures. To be more precise, we analyze the phase information of signals received on the antenna array to compute the heading of a Wi-Fi terminal. A second challenge is to provide an accurate positioning system for LPWAN systems to maintain the information consistency of deployed sensors. Current solutions are complex, costly, or not energy-efficient. To address this problem, we introduce MIMO capabilities to LoRa LPWAN systems that provide accurate localization with limited startup costs. We enable the angle of arrival estimation by leveraging a second antenna on the LoRaWAN gateway. We also prove the usefulness of such information for wireless communication efficiency. A third challenge for wireless localization is the inefficiency of current model-based approaches in case of non-line-of-sight conditions and the rigidity of data-driven approaches in case of propagation environment changes. To address this challenge, we propose a new data-driven solution for passive localization to address the limitations of model-based localization techniques. To give life to such systems and provide them with a chance of impacting our everyday lives, we should promote reusability and reproducibility. For that, we focus on the challenge of reproducibility in wireless networking by surveying the current state, performing a case study, and presenting the engendered lessons

An IoT device measuring soil moisture to help a municipality improve the work surrounding irrigation is deployed for testing and used by the concerned municipal workers. The IoT device is an initial prototype using Pycom’s LoPy4 with expansion board 3.1 and 3xAAA batteries as power supply. The prototype is not suitable for larger-scale testing due to the size, cost, and power consumption. This thesis focuses on decreasing the cost and size while increasing the battery life for the IoT device.The IoT device is communicating using the LoRaWAN protocol. For the device to be as energy-efficient as possible, the LoRa and LoRaWAN protocol are explored to use all possibilities to save energy. Active time and power consumption between different spreading factors are examined and discussed for power consumption and range concerns. The prototype produced by the work performed in this thesis is used to measure soil moisture. The microcontrollers selected and tested will not restrict to that purpose. The microcontrollers can integrate with many kinds of sensors. Integration with other types of sensors is under future work in this thesis. The integration possibilities making the thesis relevant for anyone with an intermediate knowledge inprogramming wanting to get introduced into the IoT development cycle, develop aLoRa node, and learning how to use the LoRaWAN stack with MicroPython.

Les applications de telecommunication sont frequemment realisees a l'aide d'architectures heterogenes composees d'un melange de circuits specialises (asic, fpga), de processeurs generaux et de processeurs specialises. Pour cela, la methodologie de conception communement appelee conception conjointe logiciel/materiel est utilisee. L'une des etapes de la conception conjointe appelee partitionnement logiciel/materiel scinde le systeme en une partie materielle et une partie logicielle entre lesquelles transitent des donnees. L'etude d'exemples industriels montre que les volumes de donnees peuvent entrainer des delais et des couts de communication importants remettant en cause les choix d'implantation et d'ordonnancement initiaux realises lors du partitionnement. Ainsi, l'objectif principal de cette these a consiste a etudier l'impact des communications sur l'architecture finale, puis a proposer une methodologie et des outils qui permettent l'optimisation des communications durant le partitionnement logiciel/materiel. Notre approche se differencie donc des principales approches existantes qui traitent les communications apres celui-ci. Pour atteindre cet objectif, les caracteristiques des communications sont traitees de maniere a ce que leur modelisation soit compatible avec celle des unites fonctionnelles du systeme, et des noeuds de communication sont integres dans le graphe initial modelisant l'application. Ainsi, nous montrons que la conception des communications s'apparente a une etape d'ordonnancement et d'affectation des ressources : phases classiques du partitionnement logiciel/materiel. Moyennant quelques modifications, les algorithmes de partitionnement peuvent donc proceder a la prise en compte et a l'optimisation des communications, et ce, simultanement au partitionnement lui-meme.

L'Internet des objets (IoT, pour Internet of Things, en anglais) ouvre la porte vers la réalisation de nouvelles applications, telles que les compteurs intelligents et le suivi environnemental, destinées à adresser nos défis sociétaux et écologiques actuels et futurs. Les objets, possiblement mobiles ou distants, nécessitent une connectivité sans fil pour la centralisation des données et le contrôle à distance. Les réseaux longue portée et basse consommation (LPWA, pour Low Power Wide Area, en anglais) offrent des transmissions radio bande étroite avec une couverture à l’échelle typique d’une ville, tout en respectant les contraintes de consommation énergétique bas coût des objets. Intégrer la possibilité de localiser ces objets ajouterait de la valeur à leurs données et permettrait leur suivi géographique. Voilà pourquoi c'est un domaine de recherche très actif actuellement. L'utilisation du temps de propagation des signaux radio de communication, sans intégration supplémentaire de modules matériels dédiés à la localisation, est une approche très intéressante pour la complexité, la consommation et le coût des objets. Néanmoins la radio localisation dans les réseaux LPWA pose des défis liés d'une part aux transmissions à bande étroite qui n'offrent pas une résolution temporelle suffisante et d'autre part aux canaux de propagation qui peuvent introduire des biais sur les estimées de position. Cette thèse adresse ces défis en étudiant un système de mesure multicanaux de distance pour les réseaux LPWA. La combinaison cohérente des signaux bande étroite transmis séquentiellement sur des canaux différents améliore la précision d’estimation des temps de propagation et permet de résoudre en partie les multi-trajets pour une meilleure précision de localisation. Cette technique basée sur les signaux à bande instantanée étroite conserve la capacité longue portée des transmissions et reste compatible avec les réseaux LPWA. Un modèle détaillé prenant en compte les imperfections matérielles ainsi que les besoins protocolaires pour la synchronisation en temps, fréquence et phase est développé. Basé sur ce modèle, les variantes des architectures des émetteurs-récepteurs radios et leurs impacts sur la cohérence de phase pour l’estimation multicanaux de distance sont discutés. Les limites théoriques de précision sont dérivées pour la propagation en espace libre et dans des canaux de propagation multi-trajets, illustrant l’amélioration de précision possible entre l'approche multicanaux et l'approche monocanal pour l'estimation de distance. Des estimateurs de distance sont développés et appliqués aux signaux radio simulés afin de montrer que leurs performances atteignent les limites théoriques. Ces résultats de simulation sont validés avec des expérimentations menées avec un démonstrateur implémenté avec une radio logicielle (SDR, pour Software Defined Radio, en anglais). Les tests terrains réalisés en environnement urbain permettent de confirmer l'apport d'un système d'estimation multicanaux de distance, en combinaison avec du traitement de signal avancé, pour fournir une fonctionnalité de localisation intrinsèque et précise pour les réseaux LPWA The Internet of Things (IoT) is an enabler to new applications, such as smart metering and environmental monitoring, intended to address current and future societal and ecological challenges. Things, possibly mobile or in distant locations, require wireless connectivity for data collection and remote control. Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) networks provide city-scale long-range, narrowband radio transmissions respecting the energy constraints of battery-powered low-cost objects. Being capable to localize these objects will add value to their data, enables tracking applications and is therefore a demanded and recent research topic. Precise and accurate radio signal delay based positioning without integrating additional hardware but taking advantage of intrinsic wireless communication signals is appealing in terms of device complexity, cost and energy consumption. However, radio localization within LPWA networks is challenging due to narrowband transmissions, resulting in a lack of delay precision as well as due to radio propagation channels, which degrade the accuracy of location estimates. This work addresses both challenges by investigating a multi-channel ranging system for LPWA networks. Coherently combining multiple sequentially transmitted narrowband signals on different radio channels improves delay estimation precision and allows resolving multipath channels for refined positioning accuracy. This scheme, based on instantaneous narrowband signals, conserves the LPWA long-range feature and is hence compatible with LPWA networks. A detailed signal model considering hardware imperfections as well as the required protocol exchanges for time, frequency and phase synchronization is developed. Based on this model, the requirements on radio transceiver architectures regarding the necessary phase coherence for multi-channel ranging are discussed. Lower bounds on the ranging precision are derived for both, free-space and multipath propagation channels, illustrating the improved precision compared to narrowband single channel ranging. Numerical simulations of radio signals for the two-way multi-channel ranging protocol illustrate that the performance of developed range estimators attains the theoretical precision bound and pave the way towards implementation. A flexible Software Defined Radio (SDR) based demonstrator is implemented to validate simulation results. Field trials in real urban outdoor environments are in accordance with simulation results and prove how scalable multi-channel ranging, in combination with advanced signal processing methods, will be an enabler towards precise and accurate localization in LPWA networks

Différents courants théoriques, principalement les courants collaboratifs et égocentriques, ont été élaborés pour expliquer l’adaptation de la production verbale lors d’une interaction avec une autre personne. Toutefois, ces courants s’opposent concernant la considération des besoins réels de l’interlocuteur dans la planification initiale des productions verbales. Ce mémoire comprend deux expérimentations réalisées sous un même devis expérimental. Une tâche a été développée pour départager différents types d’adaptation et sources d’information possibles. Les résultats suggèrent que généralement, les personnes produisent de l’information qu’elles-mêmes connaissent et rajoutent de l’information dans un deuxième temps, lorsque nécessaire. Toutefois, lorsqu’elles rencontrent une personne aux connaissances atypiquement restreintes, elles peuvent prendre en considération le vrai niveau de connaissance et produire les informations les plus utiles. Les résultats suggèrent donc que les personnes sont collaboratives pour produire leurs expressions référentielles et qu’elles s’ajustent au réel niveau de connaissances tôt dans l’interaction, lorsqu’elles peuvent utiliser une heuristique de connaissances prototypiques. Avec un interlocuteur aux connaissances atypiquement restreintes, elles produisent cependant des références ciblées, mais spécifiquement lorsqu’il est rencontré avant un interlocuteur prototypique. Theories from collaborative and egocentric views of language research have been elaborated to explain adjustments in verbal productions when a speaker interacts with an addressee. These theories are in conflict on the view proposing that perspective-taking occurs during the initial planning of the verbal production, allowing the speaker to meet the real needs of the addressee. The current project addresses this issue with two experiments, both utilizing the same experimental design. The task in this study was developed to differentiate between different types of adjustment (i.e. adjustments based on different sources of information). Results suggest that speakers first produce information that they themselves know and subsequently add information when needed. Overall, speakers were collaborative and adjusted their speech in a second stage during the interaction to meet the addressee’s real needs. This adjustment occurred early in the interaction, and particularly when speakers could rely on a heuristic of prototypical knowledge about their addressee. Under certain circumstances though (for instance, when meeting an addressee with extremely limited knowledge), speakers took into account their real addressee’s needs and introduced the stimuli with the most relevant information, but specifically when this addressee was met before an addressee with more prototypical knowledge.

Abstract:

Parmi les modes de communication les plus exploités chez les insectes, la communication chimique figure en bonne place. D’ailleurs, la recherche moderne consacrée aux signaux chimiques émis et perçus par les individus d’une même espèce n’a de cesse de se développer depuis plus de 50 ans. A travers ce travail de thèse, nous nous sommes intéressés à ces phéromones associées au comportement sexuel de Gastrophysa viridula (Coleoptera :Chrysomelidae). Nous avons menés, dans ce cadre, plusieurs bioessais comportementaux liés pour la plupart à des analyses chimiques par chromatographie gazeuse couplée à une spectrométrie de masse (GC-MS).La fonction la plus évidente de la phéromone sexuelle de G. viridula est l’induction du comportement sexuel mâle. Cet « aphrodisiaque », probablement constitué de plusieurs composés cuticulaires (des alcanes méthylés lourds), est émis par la femelle et déclenche par contact la sortie de l’édéage des mâles. Etonnamment, ces composés se retrouvent aussi chez les mâles de G. viridula dont le comportement sexuel est alors induit au contact de composés cuticulaires mâles. Ceci constituerait la cause proximale des comportements homosexuels observés chez les mâles de G. viridula. Nous avons ensuite étudié le rôle des composés cuticulaires dans l’isolement sexuel entre G. viridula et G. cyanea. Le comportement sexuel des mâles des deux espèces est en effet induit préférentiellement par les femelles conspécifiques. Pour G. viridula, cette préférence est visiblement attribuable aux composés cuticulaires. Enfin, les signaux chimiques sont parfois indicateurs du degré de compétition spermatique rencontré par un mâle et permettent à celui-ci d’ajuster la quantité de spermatozoïdes transmis à une femelle. Avant d’étudier l’implication de tels signaux chez G. viridula, nous avons souhaité mettre en évidence un ajustement de la quantité de spermatozoïdes transmis par des mâles soumis à divers degrés de compétition spermatique. Le nourrisson est porteur de certaines capacites qu'il va developper tres precocement, notamment celle de communiquer avec ses pairs. L'observation directe du comportement spontane de nourrissons va permettre de mettre en evidence l'evolution ontogenetique des echanges entre enfants lors de la premiere annee. 36 nourrissons, constituant 3 groupes d'age, sont filmes en creche, lors d'interactions duelles, au sein de dyades de meme age, respectivement a 6 mois, 9 mois et 12 mois. Une premiere phase descriptive et clasificatoire des comportements aboutit a la construction d'un ethogramme detaille, dont les items sont regroupes en categories operationnelles. Lors d'une seconde phase, l'analyse factorielle des correspondances fera apparaitre un lien entre donnees multidimensionnelles, ainsi que les oppositions comportementales relatives a chaque groupe d'age. De quelle maniere se structure la relation entre pairs en situation duelle ? il apparait que l'evolution des echanges est etroitement liee aux differentes etapes du developpement psychomoteur. L'analyse en sera faite au niveau des comportements a distance, des contacts physiques, des comportements extracommunicatifs et des echanges par l'intermediaire de l'objet The infant get some capacities he develops precociously , more particularly the one to communicate with peers. Naturalistic observation of infants spontaneous behaviour would allow to lead to obviousness the evolution of exchanges between peers during the first year of life. 36 infants, of three age-group, were video-taped in a day-nursery, in sama age dyads, at 6 months, 9 months and 12 months. A first descriptive and classifying stage of behaviours leads to the construction of a detailed ethogram, which items are regrouped in operational categories. During a second stage, correspondance analysis shows a link between multidimensional data, as well as behavioural oppositions connected with each age group. It appears that evolution of exchanges between peers is closely correlated with the stages of psychomotor development. Analysis will be done through distance behaviours, physical contact, extracommunicative behaviours and effects of toy presence

Abstract:

The aims of the Master's Thesis were to find out how the change of the corporate logo of travel agency Strakotour has influenced the business and how the amateur and the expert feel about this innovation. The theoretical part describes the basic concepts of logo creation, corporate design, culture and communication. The logos of big companies and their "stories of success" are explained there too. In the third part I introduce the travel agency Strakotour, its position in the market and the way of communication, which is characterised by the recent change of its corporate logo. Then the practical part shows problematic factors of this innovation: its pros and cons. The research was carried out via focus group and individual personal interviews. The results of the research are well-arranged in tables, graphs and diagrams in the practical part. The most important findings and recommendations can be found in the final parts and in the conclusion of this Master's Thesis.

Ce mémoire porte sur les modalités de l’apprentissage et de la critique des règles de la communication publique par les représentants étudiants lors de la grève étudiante de 2012 au Québec. En tenant compte des caractéristiques particulières des organisations étudiantes et des conditions dans lesquelles les représentants étudiants apprennent les rudiments des rôles d’attaché de presse et de porte-parole, ce mémoire propose d’étudier les modalités de l’apprentissage et de la critique des règles de la communication publique. Des acteurs nouveaux qui ne bénéficient pas des mêmes ressources humaines et financières que les acteurs gouvernementaux et médiatiques, mais avec qui ils ont débattu publiquement à l’occasion de la grève étudiante de 2012. Comment ont-ils appris les règles de la communication publique dans un débat public intense et animé qui a par la suite pris des allures de crise sociale? Suite à l’expérience de 2012, ces personnes sont devenues beaucoup plus connues et reconnues. Nous voulons comprendre comment les différentes façons d’apprendre des règles de la communication publique sont tributaires de l’environnement particulier et du contexte dans lequel se trouvaient alors les représentants étudiants. Nous voulons également nous attarder au contenu de l’apprentissage et de la critique pour mieux comprendre quelles sortes de règles sont apprises et quelles en sont les fonctions stratégiques. La recherche prend appui sur une analyse qualitative d’entrevues télévisées diffusées à l’émission 24 heures en 60 minutes et sur une série d’entretiens semi-dirigés avec des représentants étudiants. This thesis deals with the methods of learning and criticizing the rules of public communication by student representatives during the student strike in 2012 in Quebec. Taking into account the particular characteristics of student organizations and the conditions in which student representatives learn the rudiments of the roles of press officer and spokesperson, this paper proposes to study the modalities of learning and criticism of rules of public communication. New actors who do not benefit from the same human and financial resources as government and media actors, but with whom they publicly debated during the 2012 student strike. How did they learn the rules of public communication in an intense and animated public debate which subsequently degenerated into a social crisis? As a result of the 2012 experience, these individuals became much more known and recognized, and gained notoriety. We want to understand how the different ways of learning about the rules of public communication depend on the particular environment and the context in which the student representatives were at that time. We also want to focus on the content of learning and criticism to better understand what kinds of rules are learned and what are their strategic functions. The research is based on a qualitative interview analysis of the public affair program 24 heures en 60 minutes, on RDI, and a series of semi-conducted interviews with student representatives. Abstract:

Over the years, growing concerns for the environment have increased discourse regarding the problems and solutions to environmental crises. Messages in popular culture have implications for public perceptions of the environment and, as a result, impact how we interact with and understand our natural surroundings. While we understand the impact of rhetorical strategies in a general sense, research is needed when exploring how speaker credibility influences environmental messages. This thesis explores two concepts: how credibility impacts environmental messages and the concept of speaking for the environment. I explore these concepts through a media-centered rhetorical criticism of the film, The Lorax (2012). I analyze seven selected scenes, drawing on McCroskey’s (1966) scale of ethos and Spangle and Knapp’s (1996) study of tactics and appeals. The analysis reveals several tactics used by the two main characters, the Lorax and Once-ler, to establish their credibility. How the Lorax and Once-ler establish or fail to establish credibility impacts the future state of the environment. Ethos is a key communication concept in speaking for the environment, as the way we speak and represent the environment has consequences for how we interact with the natural world.

L'objectif de cette recherche est de contribuer à la question de l'influence du contexte interactif et situationnel sur l'état d'engagement social de personnes avec autisme. Nous avons testé cette hypothèse à travers deux études impliquant des partenaires adultes, et des personnes souffrant de Troubles Envahissant du Développement, systématiquement filmées en interaction dyadique lors d'échanges libres versus finalisés. L'analyse typologique des comportements a révélé trois styles relationnels des partenaires adultes, caractérisés par des actes communicatifs spécifiques, chacun implique des états d'engagement social différenciés de la part de leur partenaire avec autisme. Les résultats évoquent l'utilisation de stratégies différentielles selon le style relationnel du partenaire adulte, et montrent une influence significative de ces styles sur la qualité de l'engagement social des personnes avec autisme, quelle que soit la finalité de l'échange. Les résultats sont discutés du point de vue de leurs implications cliniques et théoriques, notamment dans le cadre de la pragmatique. Des perspectives de recherches futures sont suggérées Interactive skills quality of autistic child depends on the contexts (Clarck & Rutter, 1985, Mirenda & Donelan, 1986, Curcio & Paccia, 1996; Lacaze &, Rogé, 1999). The objective of this study is testing hypothesis about the influence of interactive and situational context on social engagement of persons with autism. We did through two studies including adults partners, professional or not and persons with Pervasive Developmental Disorders who are videotaped in dyadic interaction during free versus structured situations. Behavioral profile were analysed using a typological and a sequential approach. Results suggest differential behavioral caregiver strategies depend of their interactive styles. Specifically interactive styles have an influence on communication quality and mutual adjustment of autistic children, whatever the aim of the interactive situation. Issues are discussed in clinical and theoretical perspectives, notably on the frame of pragmatic. Implications for further research and educational practice are suggested

Abstract:

The aim of this essay is to show how to use William Golding's novel Lord of the Flies in the ESL classroom to teach democratic values. Such values include: respect, empathy and the right to free speech. According to Reader-Response theory, the reader brings expectations and knowledge about the subject matter (in this case democracy and its values) to the texts, which influence his/her interpretation. I have applied two different styles of analyzing a text: a Content-Based Approach and Simpson's Communication Triangle. The Content-Based Approach, in accordance with Reader-Response Theory, builds on students' knowledge and previous experience and focuses on the content to be acquired. The Simpson's Communication Triangle, on the other hand, connects reading, discussing and writing. Both of the approaches are designed to enhance the students' reading responses by providing different forums for sharing, such as discussions and writing (diary entries) from one of the character's perspective. The idea of creating Reader-Response journals is supported by multiple forms of theoretical study, and the assignments explained in this essay have been designed upon this research.

Ce mémoire s'inscrit dans un contexte où de nombreuses critiques sur l'état du système de santé dénoncent la déshumanisation continue des soins, une réduction de l'accessibilité de ces derniers, ainsi qu'un désir grandissant d'autonomisation et d'implication du patient dans les décisions concernant sa santé. Dans cette optique, ce mémoire s'intéresse au rôle joué par la communication visuelle dans l'expérience que vivent les jeunes patients et leur famille à la clinique de consultations externes pédiatrique du CHUL de Québec. L'objectif de notre recherche est de mieux comprendre la contribution du design graphique dans l'amélioration de l'expérience patient/famille dans un processus d'accessibilité communicationnelle, d'humanisation des soins et d'autonomisation du patient/famille. L'analyse des entrevues retient quatre concepts-clés à considérer pour enrichir l'expérience patient/famille: la ludification, la familiarisation, les relations interpersonnelles ainsi que l'autonomisation. De plus, les données recueillies lors de nos observations et de l'inventaire des outils communicationnels ont permis de relever cinq lacunes communicationnelles et informationnelles: la cohérence visuelle des publications qui agit sur la familiarisation avec le système de communication de l'hôpital et sur sa hiérarchisation; le lieu et le mode de diffusion des outils graphiques qui influencent leur accessibilité; le degré de compréhension des enfants quant à leur condition qui, lorsqu'élevé,favorise un réel partenariat de soins; la visibilité des services complémentaires de soutien dans le continuum de soins; l'enjeu éthique soulevé par les publications offertes par certaines compagnies pharmaceutiques. L'originalité de notre recherche repose sur l'approche novatrice - par le design - des postulats existants sur l'expérience patient/famille. Elle introduit des concepts complémentaires aux dimensions caractérisant ce processus afin de l'adapter au contexte précis des soins pédiatriques. En effet, ceux-ci impliquent davantage le cercle de soins dans la compréhension de la condition médicale des patients et dans les prises de décisions liées aux traitements médicaux de ces derniers.

Dans le cadre de ce projet de recherche, le processus d’acculturation a été étudié en l’occurrence du phénomène global du flux de migration des Congolais catholiques dans la region d’Ottawa- Gatineau. Nous avons cherché à comprendre la signification que peuvent donner les participants à la rencontre interculturelle lorsque la chorale congolaise catholique anime en rite zaïrois une messe hebdomadaire dans deux paroisses franco- canadiennes. Dans ce contexte d’interculturalité et d’intégration de nouveaux arrivants au Canada, nous nous sommes intéressés au phénomène culturel de l’animation de la chorale Lisanga de la communauté Congolaise-catholique Bondeko d’Ottawa-Gatineau. C’est ainsi que nous avons examiné cette expérience comme une rencontre dans un contexte d’acculturation et d’un espace de convivialité interculturelle. Pour aborder ce sujet, nous avons recueilli des données quantitatives, des données qualitatives et nous nous sommes attachés à l’analyse des données récoltées à partir de notre observation afin de faire ressortir les points d’influence interrelationnels. Nous nous sommes inspirées du modèle d’acculturation interactif (MAI) de Bourhis et coll. (1997) pour recueillir nos données quantitatives puisque ce modèle « tient compte de la réciprocité dynamique qui se crée lors d’une interaction entre deux cultures » (p. 370). De plus, nous avons présenté la notion de cosmopolitisme d’Appiah (2006) et la perspective culturelle sur la mondialisation d’Appadurai (2005) au modèle non seulement pour le bonifier, mais encore pour tenir compte de la réciprocité des énigmes face à une interaction interculturelle. Par le biais de notre étude, nous avons pu constater que cette rencontre interculturelle déclenche un processus d’acculturation interrelationnel de la chorale vers les communautés paroissiales et des communautés paroissiales vers la chorale. Même si certains maintiennent une certaine distance, et qu’il puisse y avoir des bris dans la communication interculturelle, l’événement a suscité la reconnaissance mutuelle chez plusieurs participants dans le cadre d’une activité de détente au sein de l’Église catholique. Ceci veut dire que notre recherche a pu faire avancer les connaissances dans le processus d’acculturation cosmopolite où chacun peut oser sortir de sa zone de confort et reconnaître la richesse de l’autre.

On analyse comment les modalités d'une lecture orale dramatisée par l'adulte constitue le premier mode d'accès à la compréhension des récits. On montre comment ces reprises narratives dialoguées et les relectures d'albums constituent des modes d'accès à la compréhension des récits et à l'élaboration conjointe d'interprétations qui assurent le développement des compétences langagières des enfants. La fréquentation des albums est problématique pour les enfants, du fait de leur complexité textuelle et de la diversité des genres sémiotiques. Notre hypothèse est que les échangesq langagiers permettent aux enfants pré-lecteurs de construire une méthodologie dialoguée d'interprétation des récits écrits et illustrés : cette coopération interprétative trouve son efficacité grâce au co-étayage par l'adulte et les pairs This research is dedicated to the analysis of co-built dialogues in connection with written and illustrated stories between a teacher and children of 4-5 years old. We analyze how the modes of dramatized oral reading by adult constitutes the first mode of interpretative reading which gives the children access to an understanding of the stories. We show how these "dialogued narrative restatements" constitute the way in which the children access the understanding of the stories and the joint construction of interpretations, which will provide the development of their linguistic skills. Due to complexity and variety in their semiotic styles, familiarization with written stories is problematic for children. We assume that dialogues allow pre-reading children to build a methodology for the interpretation. This interpretive co-operation finds its effectiveness only thanks to the co-shoring of the ideas by the adult and the peers

La communication parlée peut être vue comme un processus interactif impliquant un couplage fonctionnel entre les systèmes moteur et sensoriel. L’objectif de ce travail de thèse est de tester ces possibles liens perceptivo-moteurs, aussi bien lors de la perception que de la production de la parole, au travers de multiples paradigmes comportementaux et auprès de différentes populations de participants. Le protocole expérimental mis en place est composé de trois paradigmes expérimentaux classiques : un premier paradigme de close-shadowing,visant à explorer le format partiellement moteur de stimuli auditifs et audiovisuels de parole ; un second paradigme permettant de mettre en évidence des corrélations entre la production et la perception de voyelles ; et enfin, un dernier paradigme d’imitation consciente et inconsciente de fréquence fondamentale.Suite à la validation de notre protocole expérimental auprès d’une population contrôle de jeunes adultes normo-entendants, nous avons étudié une seconde population constituée d’adultes normo-entendants séniors, et ceci afin d’évaluer la conséquence d'un déclin des fonctions cognitives et langagières. Les résultats obtenus ont permis de suggérer une activation fonctionnelle des liens perceptivo-moteurs lors de la perception et de la production de parole chez l’ensemble des participants. La troisième population testée était constituée de patients sourds post-linguaux puis implantés, afin de déterminer l'impact d'une déprivation sensorielle ainsi que les éventuels réapprentissages liés à leur implantation sur ces liens perceptivo-moteurs. De manièresurprenante, les résultats ont mis en évidence des relations sensori-motrices actives chez ces participants, et ce même très peu de temps après l’implantation. Pris ensemble, les résultats observés avec ces trois paradigmes expérimentaux et auprès de ces trois groupes de participants attestent de la nature perceptivo-motrice de la parole. De manière importante, malgré des performances dégradées, ces interactions entre systèmes sensoriels et moteur lors de la perception et de la production de parole resteraient fonctionnelles auprès des deux populations, celle des adultes normo-entendants séniors etcelle des patients sourds post-linguaux porteurs d’un implant cochléaire Speech communication can be considered as an interactive process involving afunctional coupling between sensory and motor systems. The aim of this thesis was to test possible perceptuo-motor linkages during both speech perception and production, using distinct behavioral paradigms and populations. The experimental protocol was made of three classic experiments: a first paradigm of close-shadowing, aiming at exploring the partially motor format of audio and audiovisual stimuli; a second paradigm allowing to correlate production and perception of vowels; and a third paradigm of conscious and unconscious imitation of pitch. The experimental protocol was validated with a first group of young hearing adults. The second population studied was composed of elderly normal-hearing participants, in order to evaluate the consequences of both cognitive and linguistic declines. Results allowed us to suggest a functional activation of perceptuo-motor linkage during speech production and perception.The third population we tested comprised post-lingually deaf patients wearing acochlear implant. Our objective was to determine the impact of the sensorial deprivation and the re-learning processes, associated with their implantation, on perceptuo-motor linkages. Unexpectedly, results showed an active sensori-motor relationship in those participants, even shortly after the cochlear implantation. Altogether, our results confirmed the perceptuo-motor nature of speech. Importantly, in spite of degraded performances, these interactions between the sensory and the motor systems during speech production and perception remained functional in both the elderly normal-hearing population and the post-lingually deaf patients, wearing a cochlear implant

Cette thèse est consacrée à l'étude de l'utilité de la communication d'information afférente aux actifs immatériels lors des augmentations de capital en numéraire des sociétés françaises cotées, et son impact sur la liquidité. L'importance grandissante des éléments immatériels dans la compétitivité et la croissance des entreprises et leur non-reconnaissance comptable pose souvent la question de la nécessite de compléter les états financiers par une offre volontaire d'information sur ces actifs. La littérature comptable et financière montre l'évolution des besoins informationnels des utilisateurs externes des rapports annuels et constate l'intérêt qu'ils portent aux informations liées aux actifs immatériels. Une communication insuffisante sur ces actifs accentue donc le problème d'asymétrie d'information sur les marchés financiers. Elle offre un terrain favorable au transfert de richesse des investisseurs non informés vers les investisseurs informés, car ces derniers en exploitant l'information privée réalisent une rentabilité supérieure, au détriment des autres investisseurs. Cette situation conduit à une diminution de la liquidité des titres, et par conséquent, accroît le coût de capital des entreprises. Cela devient plus important lors des émissions de nouvelles actions où le décalage informationnel entre les investisseurs, ainsi qu'avec l'équipe dirigeante s'agrandit. L'étude menée sur un échantillon d'entreprises françaises cotées émettrices de nouvelles actions sur la période 2000-2009 montre un niveau faible d'offre volontaire d'information sur les actifs immatériels. De surcroît, l'analyse de l'impact de leur communication sur les éléments immatériels met en évidence que l'offre volontaire diminue la fourchette de prix, et augmente la profondeur du marché à l'annonce d'une augmentation de capital en numéraire This thesis is devoted to the usefulness of intangible assets disclosure by French listed companies around new equity issues and its impact on stock liquidity. The growing importance of intangibles for companies' competitiveness and growth, besides of their non-recognition often raises the question of the need to complete financial statements by intangible assets voluntary disclosure. Accounting and finance literature shows changes in external users' information needs and highlights their attention for information related to intangibles. Insufficient communication on these assets accentuates information asymmetry in financial markets. It provides also a fertile ground for wealth transfer from uninformed investors to informed investors, as by exploiting private information, they can derive higher returns at the expense of other investors. This situation leads to a decrease in stock liquidity, and therefore to an increase of companies' cost of capital, which becomes more important around equity issues. The study conducted on a sample of French listed companies issuing new equity over the period 2000-2009 shows a low level of intangibles voluntary disclosure. Furthermore, our analysis shows that intangibles voluntary disclosure reduces spread, and increases market depth at the announcement of a capital increase

Les résultats à la tâche verbale référentielle mettent en évidence un déficit de contrôle cognitif et une inefficacité des stratégies élaborées par les enfants TDAH. La confrontation des résultats obtenus apporte un regard pluridisciplinaire à l'étude du TDAH Through an interdisciplinary approach, this thesis combines developmental psychology and neuropsychology, to analyze the executive function deficit in combined-type Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disordered (ADHD) children. For this purpose, two developmental and comparative studies are conducted. In the referential communication paradigm, the subject's descriptions and comprehensions concerning visual material are analyzed. A series of non-verbal tasks taken from the neuropsychological battery CANTAB are also applied. The results to the verbal referential task reveal that ADHD children have a cognitive control deficit and develop inefficient strategies. The results from the non-verbal tasks indicate a motor inhibition deficit and difficulties in retaining information in working memory. An interdisciplinary perspective to the study of ADHD is provided by comparing the results to the verbal and non verbal tasks

Abstract:

La communication patient-médecin est une composante clé des soins de santé et une bonne communication est liée à plusieurs bénéfices pour la santé du patient. Malgré ces bénéfices, les études documentent toujours des difficultés de communication entre patients et médecins, et ces difficultés seraient davantage présentes avec des patients de minorités ethniques et ethnolinguistiques. Bien que plusieurs études aient été effectuées pour investiguer la communication patient-médecin, la littérature comporte des lacunes qui limitent notre compréhension de cette communication. D’abord, la majorité des études ont été effectuées aux États-Unis ou en Europe. Ensuite, les études privilégient davantage des méthodes quantitatives, limitant ainsi notre compréhension de la perspective du patient quant à cette expérience. Enfin, les études négligent d’explorer les enjeux ethniques et ethnolinguistiques qui affectent l’expérience de ces groupes minoritaires. C’est à la lumière de ces constats que les objectifs du premier article inséré dans cette thèse ont été ciblés. Ce premier article consiste en une revue systématique et méta-ethnographie des études qualitatives qui explorent l’expérience des patients de divers ancrages ethniques et ethnolinguistiques en consultation avec les médecins. Les résultats de cette méta-ethnographie montrent que les patients vivent à la fois des expériences positives et négatives, qui découlent entre autres des compétences relationnelles et médicales des médecins. La majorité des études n’explorent pas les enjeux spécifiques aux minorités ethniques ou ethnolinguistiques, mais celles qui s’y sont penchées illustrent que ces groupes de patients rapportent davantage de difficultés de communication. Les résultats de cette revue de littérature confirment la pertinence des méthodes qualitatives pour bien saisir la perspective et l’expérience des patients. À la lumière de ces constats, l’étude doctorale a été développée afin d’explorer plus en profondeur l’expérience des patients appartenant à divers groupes ethniques et ethnolinguistiques en lien avec leurs expériences de communication et de relation avec des médecins. Lors des entretiens avec les soixante participants, il est devenu apparent que leurs expériences de participation dans la consultation représentaient un thème clé pour décrire leurs expériences de communication avec les médecins. Conformément à l’approche inductive, l’objectif émergeant fût d’explorer les expériences des patients relatives à leur participation dans la consultation médicale. D’autre part, l’étude cherchait à explorer les nuances spécifiques aux minorités ethniques et ethnolinguistiques en matière de participation. Les résultats montrent que la participation est un thème central aux expériences des patients. Ces expériences participatives peuvent être classées selon deux dimensions clés, soit la dimension de participation sous forme d’échange d’information (p.ex., poser des questions) et la participation sous forme d’affirmation (p.ex., exprimer son point de vue). Pour chacune de ces dimensions, les patients discutent également de deux types de participation. Lorsque le patient initie cette participation, il s’agit de participation proactive, tandis que lorsque le médecin invite le patient à participer, il s’agit de participation réactive. Les patients discutent également d’expériences non-participatives, quoique ces expériences sont plus rares. En ce qui a trait aux particularités ethniques et ethnolinguistiques, ces minorités discutent moins fréquemment d’expériences participatives et attribuent ces difficultés de participation à des facteurs linguistiques, tels que la barrière linguistique et à leur identité ethnolinguistique. En conclusion, les minorités ethniques et ethnolinguistiques semblent faire face à des barrières additionnelles qui peuvent poser entrave à une bonne communication et à une participation active en consultation. Il importe de s’intéresser à ces barrières additionnelles, car il se peut que celles-ci expliquent, en partie, les inégalités de santé affectant ces groupes minoritaires. Un Modèle contextualisé de la participation des patients est présenté et discuté, afin de contextualiser les expériences des patients. Physician-patient communication is a central element in care and a good communication is linked to several health benefits for the patient. However, communication difficulties persist in medical encounters and these difficulties are more present in consultations with ethnic and ethnolinguistic minorities. Previous literature on physician-patient communication present some limitations that restrict our understanding of communication difficulties. In order to improve care, patients’ experiences of this communication must be understood. The first article inserted in this doctoral dissertation consists of a systematic review and meta-ethnography of qualitative studies exploring patients’ experiences of communication with primary care physicians. Three concepts emerged from analyses: negative experiences, positive experiences and outcomes of communication. Most studies in this review did not explore ethnic and ethnolinguistic aspects, but the few studies which did show that ethnic and ethnolinguistic minorities face additional barriers that exert mainly a negative influence on patients’ experiences of communication, namely, language barriers and discrimination. This review illustrates the pertinence of exploring patients’ experiences, with different ethnic and ethnolinguistic backgrounds, with qualitative methods, in order to gain a deep understanding of their perspective. Ensuing from this observation, the doctoral study was developed to explore in detail patients’ experiences of communication. During the interviews, it became apparent that patient participation was a central theme to describe patients’ experiences of communication with physicians. Since an inductive approach was chosen, the emerging objective of this study was to explore patients’ experiences of participation in the medical consultation with physicians. Moreover, we aimed to explore nuances in these experiences of participation according to patients’ ethnic and ethnolinguistic background. Findings show that patient participation is a central theme to describe experiences of communication. Five themes emerged in response to the first objective and these themes are organized in two key dimensions: a) participation in terms of information exchange and b) participation in terms of assertiveness. Across these themes, two types of participation emerged: proactive participation (i.e. patient initiated) and responsive participation (i.e. physician initiated). Patients also discussed experiences of non-participation; however, these were less common. Ethnolinguistic minorities discussed less participative experiences and attributed these difficulties to language barriers and to their ethnolinguistic identity. In conclusion, ethnic and ethnolinguistic minorities seem to face additional barriers which exert mostly a negative influence on their experiences of communication and participation. In turn, these difficulties may engender negative consequences for the patients’ health, thus partly explaining health inequities affecting these minority groups. A contextual model of patient participation is presented and discussed to contextualize patients’ experiences of communication and participation.

De nombreux auteurs ont mis en évidence l’intérêt porté par les organisations pour les réactions de justice des employés face aux procédures utilisées à leur égard. Truxillo, Steiner et Gilliland (2004) ont par exemple conclu que la perception de procédures justes en entreprise pouvait avoir des effets sur l’attirance pour cette entreprise et les intentions d’actions envers elle. Les recherches effectuées dans le champ théorique de la justice procédurale ont permis de faire ressortir plusieurs facteurs qui favorisent la perception d’une procédure juste, comme par exemple la Voix donnée à l’individu, c’est-à-dire la possibilité de donner son avis lors de cette procédure, la validité de l’évaluation ou encore les informations données aux employés. Plus récemment des chercheurs ont suggéré (e. G. , Van de Bos, 2001a) que les individus en situation d’incertitude attachaient encore plus d’importance au respect de ces facteurs que les individus moins incertains, mais à ce jour aucune étude n’a été réalisée dans le cadre des procédures de sélection. Au travers de sept expériences, nous avons étudié les effets de l’incertitude des candidats et d’une information rassurante sur leurs réactions de justice lors de procédures de recrutement : entretien, évaluation de la personnalité et évaluation des compétences. Dans l’ensemble nos résultats montrent que la Voix et la validité de la méthode de sélection favorisaient effectivement la perception de justice alors que l’incertitude a un impact négatif sur ces jugements. Les résultats montrent également que le fait de rassurer le candidat permet d’annuler ou de réduire les effets négatifs de l’incertitude sur les réactions de justice A long history of research has shown the interest organizations have for employees’ fairness reactions to procedures used towards them. Truxillo, Steiner and Gilliland (2004) concluded for example, that the fairness perceptions of organizational procedures could have effects on the attraction for this organization and action intentions. Studies conducted in the field of procedural justice have highlighted several factors which facilitate the perception of fairness, as for example the voice given to individuals, that is the possibility of expressing their opinion during this procedure, the validity of the procedure, and the information given to employees. More recently researchers (e. G. , Van de Bos, 2001a) have suggested that participants in situations of uncertainty attach more importance to these factors than less uncertain participants, but none of these studies was conducted during the selection process. Through seven experiments, we studied the effects of job applicants’ uncertainty on their fairness reactions during selection procedures : interview, ability test and personality test. Overall, our results shows that face validity and voice increase the perception of fairness. In contrast, uncertainty has a negative influence on people’s judgments of justice. Results also show that giving participants a reassuring information can moderate these negative effects of uncertainty on fairness reactions
