Abstract:
The collision between the dredger Bowbelle and the pleasure cruiser Marchioness on the Thames in August 1989 in the vicinity of the centre of London has drawn attention to the need for river mariners to keep a frequent look-out astern as well as ahead. This paper describes calculations of the minimum frequency at which observations astern are required in order to allow sufficient time for a ship about to be overtaken by a faster vessel to be able to take adequate avoidance action should the overtaking craft fail to keep clear.

Preston, Teresa. "A Look Back: Candidates speak out in Kappan." Phi Delta Kappan 102, no. 1 (August 25, 2020): 6–7. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/0031721720956838.

Full text
Abstract:
In this review of material from the Kappan archive, Teresa Preston looks back at the magazine’s coverage of past presidential elections. Every four years, from 1980 through 2012, Kappan sought to inform readers of candidates’ positions on key education issues. Typically, this involved publishing pieces by each of the major candidates detailing their positions, alongside an article by a freelance writer putting the candidates’ positions into context. In September 1984, writer George Kaplan explored the limited role of the president in education. In their own papers, candidates touted their achievements in past office and, regardless of party, expressed strong support for teachers and schools.
