Abstract:
What was once begun as research called LIFE has become the key component of my master's project. The meaning of LIFE has been redefined by a new landscape language. Living, infrastructure, traffic, shopping and eating identify the most common scenarios that are an intrinsic part of our daily lives. These are not exempt from the problems and difficulties characteristic of large cities like Shanghai. Landscape no longer focuses only on building parks or squares. In my project it has its own definition that informs about how to create a sustainable space not only for public use but also for private use. The research into the different ways people live has assisted me in identifying the Longtang morphology -a living system that was very popular and successful in downtown Shanghai in the 30's. Longtang is a fast-disappearing architecture due to the urban expansion in older Shanghai. Nowadays people's living conditions have improved. The buildings are new and mostly high-rise, without the unique Longtang style- easy eating and shopping ¨C in the past and without the good neighborhood relationships and useful public space. However, Longtang's living style to some extent surpasses the modern high-rise living structure. This research acknowledges the success of LIFE as a balanced schema in Longtang. The space in a traditional Longtang is neither public nor private. Longtang residents concede and build on its spatial negotiations, as private space is very restricted. Transferring private space into public space is one of the most important rules people learn while living in the Longtang. And my research question concerning how Longtang urban morphology can be used as a tool in the development of Shanghai becomes my key point in studying the Longtang structure, especially the changeability of the Longtang space. The research also identified a need for public space in various scales. The provision of this space is not easy as Shanghai is a highly dense area. My project proposes the use of public space as private-testing the strategy at different scales.

Abstract:
Based on the upcoming 2010 World Expo of Shanghai. According to 'moving out' policy of Shanghai government, a large percentage of residents from Shanghai's old downtown area are being moved out to a district on the outskirts of the municipality. In the context of moving out policy and shifting community space of 'Longtang' residents, my research explores how water can be used to forge a new typology for the Xinji residential area in developing Shanghai. The new typology of residential area is defined by a new type of community space. Water, edge and corridor are examined as three main concepts to create this kind of new community space, where residents can be provided with diverse spatial experience and various spatial effects through spatial transformations in and between private and public and diverse programs in a residential area. 'Longtang' is one of the key precedents I am looking at for the purpose of studying water edge conditions and corridor conditions, and to deduce a way to best design hybrid community in the Xinji residential area, which is selected as my research site. It is identified as one of the peripheral node for the moving out policy by Shanghai government? My research, therefore, tries to explore a new typology of Xinji residential area, which can provide both existing residents and 'Longtang' residents with diverse water based community space in the residential area and its context.

Abstract:
To manage China’s growing demands of electricity, more and larger dams could be a part of the solution. It is important to evaluate and perform safety analysis for existing dams, in order to improve our understanding and knowledge about future dams. In this master thesis, a safety research of Longtan Dam on the Hongshui River in China was analysed. The main objectives in this research were to construct a 3D model and determine the critical points of large stress, strain and yield area in the dam for different cases. The factor of safety for sliding when primary loads were acting on the dam was calculated to be 0.50 for the non-overflow section of the dam and 0.48 for the overflow section. A safety factor against overturning was also calculated for the non-overflow and overflow section to 2.24 and 1.96 respectively. The results showed that the dam was safe from both sliding and overturning. The numerical results for distribution of stress, strain and yield area were simulated in 3D models by using ANSYS, a finite element program. Several cases for non-overflow and overflow sections of Longtan Dam were analysed for different heights and load combinations. For the first three cases where only self-weight was applied on the dam, high impacts of stress and strain were located at the dam heel, toe and at the largest maintenance tunnel of the dam. Appearance of plastic strain was also found around these areas. However, when primary loads were applied to the dam sections, the values of stress and strain became larger, especially in the toe area. In the last case when the dam was subjected to seismic activity, the distribution of stress and strain along the z-direction (along the dam) showed an uneven distribution, hence showing the importance of simulation in 3D.

Abstract:
The most common failure of concrete gravity dams is sliding along the foundation surface. This thesis studies progressive failure of the Longtan dam on the upper Hongshuie river in china. Two methods are used in this thesis; the Safety Reserve Factor (SRF) method and the Overload method. The SRF-method is used as a tool to study sliding failure along the foundation weak layer of the Longtan dam. Strength reduction coefficients decrease the cohesion and friction angle values for the weak layer of the foundation. Simulations with reduced shear strength parameter values gives information about the development of the plastic zone. The ultimate bearing resistance and the failure path along the foundation are obtained. The safety reserve coefficient is established through the strength reduction coefficients, when the plastic zone of the foundation is totally coalescent. To analyse the development of the plastic zone along the dam foundation with the strength reserve method, the commercial finite element software MSC.Marc is used. The results of the Safety Reserve Factor method (SRF) show that the failure of the dam is highly related to the strength of the interface between the dam and rock foundation. The strength reserve factor is determined to 2.4. The Overload method gives a visual deformation shape of the dam structure and pressure load at the moment of failure.

Abstract:
This thesis covers the master diploma work conducted at Hohai University, Nanjing, People's Republic of China. An overflow spillway section fitted for the Longtan Dam was designed and the loads acting on it was identified after an iterative flood routing calculation. The section was then evaluated, both theoretically and numerically using FEM with a linear-elastic isotropic constitutive model, with regards to the stability against compressive and tensile failure. Also, a numerical analysis of the seepage through and around the structure was conducted. The results show that, for a given design of the section, the structure can handle the compressive stresses that arises. However, the numerical analysis indicates a possible tensile failure at the dam heel, which is inconsistent with the theoretical stability analysis. The seepage analysis show that the maximum seepage occurs at the dam heel, the dam toe, and at grout curtains beneath the structure. A simple convergence analysis was done which showed stress singularities at the dam heel and dam toe. These were discussed and connected to the St Venant's principle, and these singularities shows the risk of blindly trusting numerical results.

Rogers, Cathal. "Land agents and urban aristocratic estates in nineteenth century Staffordshire : a comparison of Longton and Walsall." Thesis, Keele University, 2018. http://eprints.keele.ac.uk/4531/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the impact of the social and economic policies of two aristocratic landowners on the development of Staffordshire towns. The integral role of land agents is demonstrated by comparing the earl of Bradford’s Walsall estate with the duke of Sutherland’s land near Longton, in the Potteries. While agents’ importance to the management of rural estates is recognised, and the contribution of aristocrats to the development of towns is similarly established, the role of agents on aristocratic urban estates is largely overlooked. This thesis makes an original contribution to knowledge by readdressing this imbalance using considerable volumes of agent’s correspondence, many of which remained uncatalogued until 2013. These letters represent an invaluable, and underused, source for analysing the physical, social and political development of urban landscapes. Land agents, from diverse social and professional backgrounds, are demonstrated to play an instrumental role in the management and development of urban estates, to a far greater extent than the often-disinterested landowners. Yet the professionalisation of the agent’s role is shown to be a staccato affair with old systems of patronage often continuing. Three chronological chapters chart the physical growth of Longton and Walsall throughout the nineteenth century, demonstrating the influence and autonomy of agents over all aspects of urban developments. This analysis is supplemented by two thematic chapters exploring the estates’ impact on the social development of the towns. The provision or restriction of recreation spaces and attempts to shape political developments in the formative decades following the Great Reform Act, demonstrate sometimes unwelcomed attempts at continued social control in the new urban environment. Agents forged the link, or often the buffer, between the landowner and his tenants. They addressed their employees’ conflicting desires for the maintenance of paternalism, and for profit maximisation, and directed the transition from a rural to urban society.

The year of international ecotourism started in 2002 and as a result, the tourism industry which emphasizes on using ecological restoration and recreation to reduce environmental loading has developed. By allowing only a small number of tourists and integrating natural landscapes and cultures to guided tours with the help of local residents, tourists can develop their senses of belonging to the place and deeply experience it. This study covers the entire Longtan Township where the majority of residents are Hakka and Hakka culture is deeply rooted in this area. The study also analyzes resources for ecotourism within Longtan and identifies places where ecotours could take place and methods that could be used for ecotours. Strategic analysis is used to examine the interaction in the development of sustainable Hakka ecotours between ecotours and Hakka culture. In the end, the study evaluates the development strategy for sustainable Hakka ecotours based on five factors, namely, environment, culture, politics, economics and society. The conclusion and suggestions of this study can be used as references for developing sustainable ecotours development strategy in the future.

Since the 1950s, several anti-Chinese movements occurred successively in Indonesia, threatening the lives and property of local Indonesian overseas Chinese. Thus, after some consideration, numerous Indonesian overseas Chinese chose to accept the arrangement of migration to Taiwan arranged by the Overseas Community Affairs Council of the Republic of China. They were relocated to different counties and cities and have been living in those places for more than fifty years. Many of them have taken root and have spread their families in Taiwan. With the advancement of overseas Hakka studies and Hakka cultural resource investigations, this piece of history that has been gradually forgotten is being narrated again. The “Hakka” identity and the migration process of these Indonesian overseas Chinese are drawing the attention from Hakka studies again. Many researchers have been analyzing the process of diaspora and the trace of identity change of Indonesian overseas Chinese from the perspectives of diaspora theory and ethnic relationship. The new understanding of the Indonesian overseas Chinese has also brought new reflections and questions. Previous scholarship tended to focus on the objective descriptions of the relevance between Indonesian overseas Chinese and Hakka; however, how the Indonesian overseas Chinese understand and narrate their own “Hakka” identity or identification from the perspectives of narratives remains an unsolved question. Therefore, this study applied Paul Ricoeur’s concept and method of “narrative identity” to investigate the “identification with identity” acquired by Indonesian overseas Chinese from the mediating effect in a narrative structure in order to clarify the relevance between “life stories” and “Hakka” in the narrative of Indonesian overseas Chinese. This paper indicated that “narratives” are highly situational conversations. Through narratives, the paper analyzed stories of the Indonesian overseas Chinese and reflected the rhetoric situations and interpersonal relationship that confined the narrators. The “migration process,” “life stories,” and “Hakka identity” of the Indonesian overseas Chinese are actually the stories presented in the interweaving process of the narrators’ constant adjustment of “interpretive paths” when the narrators were confined to their own cultural and social positions.

Longtan, located at Taoyuan, is the northern tourist hinterland of the third provincial road. In recent years, the northern and central Taiwan has been promoting the tourist revitalization policy of “Romantic Third Provincial Road” which ranges from Pingchen, Taoyuan, to Xinshe, Taichung, and develops the surrounding tourist economy. Longtan District, privileged with the rich tea industry, natural environment, and humanistic resources, is also the largest center of Hakka culture. Therefore, from the angle of local reengineering and design practice, this study proposes the core concept of combining the tea industry of Longtan and the Hakka culture and develops the local tourist brand called “Longtan Hakka Tea Cultural Tour” This study considers local reengineering “a way to let the world know and understand a district again.” Through the meticulous design and interpretation of cultural creativity, the tea garden culture of Longtan can be built into a tea township with the trendy concept. The Brand “Longtan Hakka Tea Cultural Tour” as the core of local and cultural imagination, will simultaneously transform the local knowledge on natural landscape, culture, and history into the capital of local marketing and economic operation. The study believes that the establishment of the local brand does not only lie in the marketing and operation of the product economy but also in the sufficient knowledge on the local cultural environment and historical context. The aesthetic thinking is not only to shape the impression of the trendy tea township of Longtan from the angle of the tourists. Instead, it is to endow the brand with the local identity and provide the travelers and locals with the authentic knowledge and truest feeling about the place. The setting of a local brand aims to revitalize the economy of Longtan and at the same time to reacquaint the world with the local charm of Longtan.. People pay more attention on leisure time in recent years. According to the sources of Tourism Bureau of Taiwan has shown that the number of foreign tourist has increasing annually over these ten years. And the data of the natives of domestic travel frequency and travel budget is also keep growing. While the numbers of the tourist is increasing, the quality of tourism should improve as well. Furthermore, the experience as people travel to different places will take into consideration of satisfaction. In the meantime, the requirement on environmental guidance and facilities can be particularly significant. When tourists visit a new place, they might feel anxious since they are not familiar with that environment. Therefore, signage system has an effect to this situation. It can show the great function of guidance, direction, instruction or even supervision. The signage system design takes Longtang district of Taoyuan as a model. This system is able to meet the demand of identifying, directing and informing. What’s more, we also expect the design can combine local features, region culture and environment resources so that it can reach a balanced status. Moreover, we look forward that this design provides the area a recognizable image with local characteristic and to better the convenience also improve the environment quality.

A Study on the Change of the Tea Industry in Longtan Abstract In the Qing Dynasty, the land traffic in Taiwan was underdeveloped, so the inland river navigation arose. The upper stream of Dakekan River, San Keng Zi, Longtan was where the commodities were transported from the deep mountains to the north of Taiwan. Dakekan River was the fastest and most convenient way. San Keng Zi, Longtan, was situated at the transferring location between the river and the land, so there were streets and markets full of people and commodities. It played an important role in transporting the commodities of north Hsinchu and south Taoyuan, especially the transportation of tea. The tea industry of Taiwan started to develop in the second half of the 19th The tea industry was the main way to earn foreign money in the early days in Taiwan. “North Tea and South Sugar” was well-known. The tea-producing regions in the early days of Taiwan were mainly located in the northern part of Taiwan, especially the hills of Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Miaoli. The tea plantations of Longtan were around Tong Luo Quan. In terms of the amount of production, Longtan was the main tea-producing region with the annual yield of about 25,000 tons, up to one-tenth of that of the whole country. century. The “Formosa Tea” gradually became famous in the foreign market. It became the important commodities in Taiwan and was called “the Treasure of Taiwan” together with cane sugar and camphor. It had a deep influence on the social and economic development in north Taiwan. In the early days, the tea farmers at Beipu and Emei carried the raw tea by themselves through Chiunglin and Guanxi to Longtan and Daxi. Then the tea was transported through the waterway to Da-Dau-Cheng, where it was sold. Longtan was located at the hub of the tea production and transportation, and the climate there was also ideal for the tea trees. Therefore, Longtan had an edge and a history in the tea industry. Why does Longtan, which used to be the second largest tea-producing region in north Taiwan, no longer have influence? In the process of transformation, what method and style should it focus on to reshape the local characteristics? In the global economic transition, whether it can extend the development of the tea industry and establish and maintain a new trend will be an important issue.

Tea plays a very important role in the Chinese daily life. Even though the newcomer from western world – coffee – has joined in to become a part of eastern life, it has failed to replace the tea drinking culture of Chinese people. In these few years, more and more different tea related drinks have been put up on the rack of the supermarkets, and it indicates that tea drinking culture is no longer just among the old people; the number of younger people who drinking tea has been increasing as well. Born in Taoyuan, and grew up in Taoyuan, I feel that I have to do something to repay the place that nourish me for thirty years. Therefore, when deciding the direction of thesis, the first thing pop up in my head was that I should use material from the surrounding of my daily life. On one special occasion, I paid a visit to Taiwan Tea Experiment Station, COA, EY, and I have learned some basic ideas of the history of Taoyuan tea development. By studying and analyzing tea drinking culture and habit among the people in Taiwan, I've learned about consumer's motivation and consumer's behaviors. Compare to other industries, Taiwanese tea products have the weakness on both marketing and packaging. Because tea products are healthier, there are more and more people enjoying consuming them. As a resident of Taoyuan Hsien, it is my responsibility to promote Taoyuan Hsien's tea products, and help pushing Taoyuan Hsien's tea products and brand to the market. Longtan Township has the best tea products in Taoyuan Hsien. First of all, its landforms are mostly hills, and it has unique acid 'red soil' that has a better water drainage, and contains rich iron. Also, warm and humid weather of Longtan makes perfect environment for growing the tea plants.Oolong Tea is the best representational tea products among others; besides tealeaves, another special flavor coming from a little sprout-eating insect called “Amrasca biguttula” (Ishida). After the little insects bore through the tea sprouts, they remain an unique flavor on the tea leaves; the tea plants have to be chemical free to allow the insects to process on the plants. This study focuses mainly on planing the visual design of Oolong Tea. I use the focal points – the tea is organic, no chemical, no pollution, and some other similar concepts to build a healthier image to the public; it convinces consumers that by drinking this tea, they can actually feel the value of this tea and this brand.

The reproduction ecology of Geothelphusa olea, G. pingtung, and Candidiopotamon rathbunae was studied in Longtan (Taoyuan County), Liangshan (Majia, Pingtung County) and Nanrenshan (Manjhou, Pingtung County), respectively. In low water period, the streams of Longtan and Nanrenshan do not dry up and Liangshan''s stream will dry up. These sites were surveyed from August 2002 to December 2004. A total of 3357 individuals of G. olea were collected in Longtan, 2650 individuals of G. pingtung in Liangshan, and 2119 individuals of C. rathbunae in Nanrenshan. The number of females were less than males in G. olea (female : male = 784 : 993), but the sex ratio approached 1 : 1 in G. pingtung and C. rathbunae. The mean carapace widths (CW) of females were larger than males in G. olea and G. pingtung. In C. rathbunae, the mean CW between males and females were near the same. The larger mean CW of the females may be caused by the longer life span. Based on the results of smallest breeding females, the CW of mature females of G. olea, G. pingtung and C. rathbunae were 21.7, 26.0 and 30.5 mm, respectively. The analysis of relative growth in secondary sexual characters with respect to CW of G. olea, G. pingtung and C. rathbunae shows that the pubertal molt at 20.0, 24.1 and 29.7 mm, respectively. In results of breeding seasons, a total of 218 breeding females of G. olea, 574 breeding females of G. pingtung, and 76 breeding females of C. rathbunae were collected. Based on the analysis of breeding females monthly, the breeding season of G. olea in Longtan was from early June to mid-November with its peak from middle to late September. The breeding season of G. pingtung in Liangshan was from late February to early June with its peak from mid-May to early June. The breeding season of C. rathbunae in Nanrenshan was from mid-April to late November with two peaks in mid-June and mid-October to early November, respectively. By comparison of the breeding seasons and the precipitation, the brood of G. olea in Longtan was released at the end of the rainy season; the brood of G. pingtung in Liangshan was released at the beginning of the rainy season. However, the brood of C. rathbunae in Nanrenshan was released during and at the end of the rainy season.

According to Ministry of the Interior(MOI)Statistical information, there were 101 people dead within 2,879 fire accidents in Taiwan, 2008. Among them, a highest 40.67% of fire accidents (1,177times) caused by the residential fire. According to the building fires’ safety regulations in Taiwan, there is no mandatory requirement for the residential fire prevention in general. When residential fire occurred, it always caused serious personnel casualties and property losses. Therefore, how to avoid or reduce the occurrence of such similar disaster, further researches and analysis of fires are necessary. This paper selects the residential fire case on Jhongsing Rd., Longtan Township as research object. Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) developed by NIST has been utilized to simulate fire scenarios, in order to study the changed of upper layer temperature distribution, carbon monoxide concentration, oxygen concentration and gas layer height in fire site as well as the effect of parameters to fire scenarios. The simulation results expected to understand the effect of parameters for person’s refuge time during the fire and provide references for fire protection engineering design, in order to ensure the people’s lives, and avoid more occurring of family tragedies.

Messages in real estate transactions transparent and announced in early 1991 caused by the volumetric rate of the control building are rushing to build, but he led more than a large number of houses unmarketable. A huge backlog of capital is not only a waste of resources, real estate market downturn brought the non-performing loan ratio of financial institutions on the rise, forcing the Treasury rolled out starting in early 1999, hundreds of billions of low-interest housing loans, attempting to make into a quagmire of financial sector relief, and this one practice at the time much comment. In this study, the seller''s point of view, trying to find out the marketing decisions to be a focal point of consideration, and hope to build a complete real estate marketing standard operating procedures, provide the rest of home sales in the next release of the case, decision-making basis. Thus, in addition to market analysis and marketing strategies to explore the connection between the outside and in line with actual case of the verification and analysis of the theory with a view to practical experience can provide a complete logic of the industry''s ideas and practical direction for decision-making. At different stages in the marketing process encountered by the blind spot, may be the target market analysis customer-level analysis, media planning, product re-positioning, lock-off layer and development and other projects to be overcome to reduce the risk to push the case. The marketing research of the three major focus for the development of marketing strategies to provide appropriate basis. By collecting information, market analysis and develop strategies so far, each phase must be closely interlinked, are indispensable. A case study from the Longtan, verify that a structure can actually correspond with the case. From land development to the house I go to technology, have encountered to provide a reasonable and feasible guidelines. The case in the planning of products and develop sales strategies, we should first analyze target their customer characteristics. Local area due to the price level is not high on the high floors of the acceptance is limited; and the preference for low-floor residential high-rise housing on a larger resistance. A result of the case to the regional customer satisfaction, so planning product portfolio and pricing strategies, we should first understand the characteristics of the region. Longtan introduced at the beginning, failed to target their customer development and sales of locking operations in parallel, resulting in the loss of the best sales opportunities and cause excessive I housing, increasing the risk to the technology. As for the meaning of strategy is concerned, include the following: 1. For the various stages of marketing research and market analysis required to develop strategies, begin with a way to illustrate this process, can be used as the industry pushed the case when the actual reference; 2. marketing research analysis for different stages of the project very much visible changes in the actual needs of the situation to be in order to comply with the principle of cost-effectiveness; 3. because of the type of real estate varies types of different, although this study focused on the residential type of pre - Discussion on home sales, but other types of real estate required for the analysis of the focus is very much the same, the difference is not, should be able to apply by analogy to be adjusted.

The Hakka people of Longtan District, Taoyuan has been producing tea more than one century, and experiencing the transformation from exporting market to domestic one. In the changing era, many tea farmers insist on maintaining the tradition, others embracing the change. The age-old Longtan Pauchung tea was eliminated by the more exquisite, hand-made Pongfong tea and Taoyuan black tea. Some traditional farmers eagerly convert to leisure tea farm to attract tourists. Then, we see diverse developments of the Longtan tea industry today. Through an extensive collection of information, in-depth interviews, and participate observation, and in the approach of social agents’ perspective, this study tries to analyze how different social agents changed the existing social structure to promote the transformation of Longtan’s tea industry. We found out there are many agents in the industry which includes government sectors, local factions leaders, civil society organizations (CSOs), and multi-generational tea farmers. By analyzing the problem of transformation, the study provides constructive suggestions for the future development of Longtan’s tea industry. 1.The government plays a critical role in the transformation of Longtan’s tea industry, and under the manipulation of the central government, the local governments can only provide limited resources; 2.Local factions affect the development of the industry; 3.The running offices of the farmers’ association affect the marketing policy of Longtan’s tea industry during its transformation; 4.Some local communities and associations integrated the leisure tea farm industries’ resources with its environment; 5.The Tea Production and Marketing Group provides financial subsidy to farmers; however, it cannot make the production and marketing co-groups; 6.Due to the traditional, conservative culture and partly to politics, the Longtan tea farmers are unable to reach a consensus on the direction of the industry. 7.The larger-scale tea factories transform quicklier than the smaller-scale factories, promptly responding to different consumer demands.

The Study on the Behavior Intention of Cycling on Longtan to Dasi Riverside Bikeway Abstract Based on the theoretical concept of the experiential marketing model proposed by Schmitt (1999), this study investigated the correlation of experiential marketing, experiential value, recreation satisfaction and behavior intention. This study used the questionnaire of convenience sampling, and the subjects were the cycling tourists touring on Longtan to Dasi Riverside Bikeway. There were totally 351 valid questionnaires, and the following findings were obtained through the statistical analyses of descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient and multiple regression: 1.Tourists with different marital status had significant differences in all dimension of experiential marketing. Tourists with different monthly income had significant differences in all dimensions of experiential marketing. Male and female tourists had a significant difference in the dimension of return on investment of experiential value. Tourists with different marital status had significant differences in all dimension of excellent service dimension. Tourists with different monthly income had significant differences in all dimensions of experiential value. Tourists with different marital status had significant differences in behavior intention. Tourists with different monthly income had significant differences in behavior intention. 2.There was a significant correlation of experiential marketing, experiential value, recreation satisfaction and behavior intention. 3.Cycling on Longtan to Dasi Riverside Bikeway had a significant predictive power on behavior intention. Based on the above results, this study suggested that the information exchange platform can be extended so that the popularity can be promoted in order to attract tourists from middle and southern Taiwan to come here for recreation. For the administrators of bikeway management, the results can be provided as references of applying experiential marketing to enhance the public’s interest to participate cycling in order to achieve the target of “Taiwan as an exercise island” through the cultivation and reinforcement of the exercise culture. The Ministry of National Defense (MND) introduced Joint Conflict and Tactical Simulation (JCATS), a computer-war-game-system with powerful simulation function, from US military in 2008. The scale of JCATS vector maps are those of less than 1/5000. It’s hard to express the crowed streets, close and numerous buildings, and complex terrain characteristics for hiding and covering. In this study, The large-scale digital topographic maps are used to establish thematic map layers (e.g. roads, buildings, water, etc.) with the original CAD based .dwg files according to the JCATS system requirements. These maps can be also provided to build battlefield environment for the simulation of urban warfare to assist maneuver and training by the troops. The original CAD files provide information to the maps data with the process of debugging, corrected drawing, file conversion, coordinate conversion and attributes editing. In response to the urgent requirements of urban warfare in the building height information, large-scale digital topographic maps are compared with maps of 1/5000 and 1/25000, to investigate the cause of the error incurred and to enhance efficiency for map updating. Finally, the large-scale maps are imported into JCATS, along with the actual scenarios, to verify its feasibility and to build terrain database for the computer war-game, which is beneficial to the simulation training of joint troops.

Regarding to the writing of history of a family in general, there was not only a successful member of the family but also they had lots of historical materials to study. Neither the Long-Tan Liao family nor the Ho-Se Liao family, which moved to the mountain village in Nan-Tou, had ever appeared a famous person. The reasons which triggered me for writing the history of my family were trying to record the life of an ordinary people from the point of view of an ordinary people. The intention of records of a family in details, were by way of both intensive interviews in details and linking the memories of members of the family. This thesis started from recording Ying-Meng Liao who crossed the Taiwan Strait and migrated from China to Taiwan during the ruling period of Yong-Zheng of Ching Dynasty. He moved here and there to avoid the conflicts between the people of Min-Nan and Hakka at his early years. Most people agree that Taiwan should develop its tourism as the first priority when facing globalization. In globalization, the role of towns has already exceeded the limit of nations and their competitive advantages have changed from the emphasis of geographic location and natural resources etc. to the emphasis of the innovative niches of their talents with excellent skills, environmental protection and LOHAS quality living environment etc. Observing the development of a Hakka village of Longtan Township allows the researcher to understand the marketing and management model of Hakka villages and how to market and manage Lungtan Township. This study observed the development of a Hakka village of Longtan Township – mainly its industries, tourism and living development – and regarded them as “products”. This study described how Hakka villages properly used the external opportunities of the increasing rise of multi ethnic culture and the advantage of the unique artificial scenery to obtain the international competitiveness, break through the difficulty of local development and establish the direction of sustainable development when facing the external threats brought by the challenges of globalization and the internal risks of the passing gap of their culture through the theory of product mix and the management. This study used documentary analysis to find out Longtan Township’s natural and humane advantages through its historical development and utilized the interviews with experts and the cross-check of the weight of marketing 4P from Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to sort out its SWOT based on the results to be the references for formulating development policies in the future. Hakka ethnic group is one of the most populated groups immigrating to Taiwan at early days, and they have established plenty of diverse and unique Hakka cultures and living aesthetics during these long years, the most important soft power in the marketing mix. For local marketing of townships, there is no universal answer or SOP to follow, and the thought and action of the marketing of every township should be adjusted according to people and location. The development of a city must be planned according to its characteristics and historical context. Building up an environment suitable for living and also friendly to visitors from people’s perspectives and it is the lifeblood for the sustainable development of a city or township and can enable them to be globalized. “Construction enlarges a city, but culture makes it become great.” In the past, perhaps Hakka people were weaker in the geographic competition with Hoklo people after coming to Taiwan from Tangshan; however, nowadays Hakka ethnic group has more clear-cut characteristics. Formerly, people may not understand Hakka people well, but now the table has turned and they should sparkle.

Scattered settlement was once a general type in Taiwan traditional agricultural village, which is meaningful as it representing the cultural development context in one area. However, the agriculture development has gradually declined because of the emphasis of Taiwan economic has been shifted. That’s why it would be very important to preserve the life style about traditional agricultural village. It means a lot to the continuation of local value. Nowadays, Huang-Tang Village is keeping the traditional life style of Hakka culture, but it still influenced by the modernization development of Longtan area. Thus, this study is discussing the scattered settlement cultural landscape of Huang-Tang village, in a view of preserving. Huang-Tang village in Longtan Township used to be a part of Yellow Quagmire geographical scope. It was the territory of Siau-li-sia, a Pingpu tribe, since 17th century. People of Siau-li-sia had started to learn the agriculture from Han Chinese people in the wake with the government had opened immigration reclamation in Qing dynasty. At 1748, The Siau-li-sua people and Han people together exploited the Longtan reservoir, initiating the agricultural development of this area. However, the fights between Han people and Siau-li-sia people make Yellow Quagmire became a forbidden reclamation area for almost sixty years, until 1837. Under this circumstance the Hakka people immigrated to Yellow Quagmire and create a scattered agricultural settlement. They had developed to the scale to be seen today at Japanese colonial period. The main characteristic of Huang-Tang Village is the scattered three-or-four-compounds houses. After the government of R.O.C. had immigrated to Taiwan, political and economical construction had changed and started the modernization of Longtan Township. This causes the homogenization of surrounding in each village. However, Huang-Tang village’s cultural and historical texture is completely preserved because of its geography position. That’s why the Hakka culture environment in Huang-Tang village is so representative to the history development of Longtan Township. This research discusses the significance that how cultural landscape resources in Huang-Tang Village could represent a particular area on the dimensions of time, space, and population. It also proposes the level and benefit of preserving the scattered settlement cultural landscape of Huang-Tang village based on the result of discussing the preserving value. This is expected to be the reference to execute the preservation program of scattered settlement cultural landscape of Huang-Tang village. Further more, it is expected to achieve the revival of Hakka agricultural living appearance and extend the memory of living in one area.

The organization and origin of the Longtan Poetry Societies are closely related to the development of Taiwan community. The methodology of this thesis is based on the research of the organizational development of Hakka Poets’ Society in Longtan village. The contents of this thesis are mainly focused on presenting the community characteristics of the development processes, activities and creative literature writings of the founding poetry societies, i.e., Tao Society and Long-Yin Poetry Society (later renamed the Chu-Sao Poetry Society) in Longtan Hakka village. This research consolidates both documental materials and interviews linking the theoretical and practical points together. Furthermore, this thesis investigates the cultural impacts on traditional heritage and explores the poetry societies’ (Tao Society and Long-Yin Poetry Society) contributions in promoting poetic appreciations on their literature writings and social observations. Also, this thesis explores the relationship between the intrinsic ideology and the development of social community through the works of Tao Society and Long-Yin Poetry Society. There are five chapters in this thesis. The first chapter introduces the research motives, purposes and scope, literature review, and research methodologies. The core resources are a collection of first-hand information obtained via fieldwork of the Tao society and Long-Yin Poetry Society, and supplemented using the relevant historical documents (newspapers, periodicals, bulletins, local chronicles, etc.) and interviews from poets with higher academic status and artistic achievements. The interviews encompass many different ethnic groups and include analysis of their works. The sampling of poets includes poets whose poetries have both unique artistic features, and a considerable degree of reflection on society status. The research utilizes the Literature theory “Genetic Structuralism” from Lucien Goldmann (1913-1970) to analyze and to explore the ideological structure, influences and achievements beyond literature, sociology and psychology. The second chapter is an overview of the local chronicles and historical documentation, coupled with careful fieldwork (excavation of precious documents), to get an overview of the Longtan geographical environment, both historical and cultural. Natural resources play an important prerequisite for the formation of the local cultural environment under different historical periods and economic environments; this thesis observes these effects in the form of its literary heritage and progress to understand the development of the space-time background of traditional literature in Longtan. The third chapter explores the background of the Tao Society, its naming and organization, its activities, branches, interactive exchanges, the development process, etc. The chapter also includes a review of the meaning of the Tao Society traditional poets’ work. The fourth chapter explores the background on the founding of Long-Yin Society, its naming and organization, its activities, interactive exchanges, the development process including the merging of the Long-Ying Poetry Society and the Chinese Chu Sao Research Society (known as Chu Sao Poetry Society). This chapter also analyses the meaning of prior chairmen’s works. The final chapter summarizes the results of this thesis, and proposes suggestions on further study and future prospects.

Sanqiashui is a typical Hakka farming village and consists of two neighborhoods, Sanhe and Sanshui. The Sanhe community is part of the Sanhe neighborhood and home to the sources of several rivers, including the Xiaoli River. Apart from river terraces, it also boasts many river valleys, hills and plateaus, contributing to its rich natural and ecological resources and the establishment of this Hakka settlement. Its name ‘Sanqiashui’ is related to the Hakka and the ‘qia’ in it means ‘river confluence’ in the Hakka language. The community has rich community assets because it began as a peaceful place known for ethnic fusion where the majority of its population were Hakka and the Pingpu peoples had become part of the Hakka settlement very early on. This study was a qualitative research using literature review, participant observation and in-depth interviewing for in-depth investigation. The results show that the community’s approach to the development of environmental education features its natural environment, characteristics of different cultures in it, education programs and related operational planning. The subject of study boasts rich cultural backgrounds and geographical settings, which together with the rice culture promoted by the local Hakka industry and its rich experience with active participation in government policies and community building have laid the foundation for the exceptional advantage for its development of environmental education as a farming village. The community has a local third party organization that collaborates with the public and private sectors on community development and farming village revitalization. In July, 2012, it obtained the certification for environmental education facilities and locations and became Taiwan’s first community-based environmental education locale imbued with the flavor of a Hakka village. In addition, it has also been successfully marketing the Sanhe farming village and community by organizing activities such as the Hakka Tung Blossom Festival and environmental education programs. In recent years, it has further established its reputation by participating in external community assessments and national environmental education assessments and achieving great results. The Sanqiashui Environmental Education Center operates fairly well, but has a few challenges, which are described as follows. Its environmental education programs allow limited numbers of participants and the fixed programs have difficulty attracting visitor groups to return. Moreover, the local Hakka industry does not have fixed marketing campaigns to maintain the community’s revenue stream and there is the problem of pollution from industrial wastewater to be solved. Therefore, adjustment of education programs and related operations management are the direction for the center’s future efforts and the community’s goal for sustainable development.

In the development process of overall festivals, there are still not much in-depth study of festivals transformation process, when old festivals transform to the new and create a new activity significance. The transformation of festivals type in the studies, they often use a static way to directly identify the festivals only belong to a certain type after the festivals transformation, but the dynamic process of festivals have been ignored. In the fact, festivals in the conversion process may contain with the various types of coexistence. Therefore, we used in order to overcome the static definition of the past which by employing the concept of “circuit of culture”, proposed by Paul du Gay et al. in 1997. The concept of “circuit of culture” studied according to five basic and interlinked dimensions: production, consumption, regulation, representation, and identity, which can be clearly distinguished out the festivals which all kinds of meaning and fuzzy abstract cultural connotation. In addition, a case of Dragon Boat Festival in Longtan Taoyuan is unique, that it is not only the representatives of the “Festivalization” but also the “Hakkalization” phenomenon in traditional festival, and so we choose it. This dissertation tries to point out that the study of previous festivals cannot easily be found the transformation and re-creation of local festivals. We expected to use the views of our thesis, which to open the different directions of festive research as a reference model for future researchers. The approaches are of qualification, including literature analysis, qualitative context-analysis, in-depth interview and questionnaires, which can explore the factors involved in the process of transformation and re-creation of local festivals. Through the study of this case, we found that classical history of Dragon Boat Festival in Longtan Taoyuan has been had a new stage of change ,including “Folklore religion”, IV “Sports competition”, “Sightseeing” and “Hakka affairs” which is the new meaning of this case. The development of dragon boat races are became more “professional” and “competitive” in this case. Secondly, when Hakka Affairs Council involved in the process of transformation for the Dragon Boat Festival in Longtan Taoyuan, which has been had another Hakka activity status since 2009. However, it also has Hakka identity problems at the same time. Thirdly, the Hakkalization of this festival has been faced challenge such as comes from the local and outsiders, who thought the activities are belonging to Hakka activities or not. However, we found the new directions which can explain these perplexities from the questionnaire and in-depth interviews with the results. Fourthly, faceing with the challenges of “Hakkalization”, we need to give our thinking more opening and diverse about attitude for identified the activities. The development of sports have been closed to Hakka life for a long time which we found the fact from the study. Therefore, this is a reason as a new way to the shape of Hakka festivals, so that everyone for the Hakka impression is not only focused on customary use of the Hakka elements and the flowers of the Hakka symbol. Hakka living in all aspects of our lives as Dragon Boat Festival in Longtan Taoyuan, which has been held in Hakka villages for a while, on behalf of the Hakka people in the successful development of sports experience. We should not confine to a particular impression of Hakka so we create a new thinking by the case study which can be a permanent extension and inheritance of Hakka culture.

Nowadays, art festival is an crucial measure in establishing and installing the local cultural features for transformation and development of towns and villages. A region does not solely rely on its own unique culture or outstanding features, public sector and non-government associations’ planning and implementation are equally important. This hereby brought in the concept of ‘cultural governance’. Under the guidance of the central government, unused spaces were reused as a new platform for breeding of artistic forces. Besides adding in the element of innovation, the strategy of cultural governance also implements the recognition of cultural trademark within and beyond the particular region. Based on the literature of Chung Chao-cheng, the Dull Ice Flower Art Festival in Longtan was a combination of literature landscape and art space, made possible by multigroup collaborations of arts workers, schools and communities. Study methods involved a series of literature review, on-the-spot observation and in-depth interviews. Based on the relevant theory of cultural governance, the study intended to analyse the innovative transformation and cultural benefits of art festival during atypical local festivals, such as understanding the Hakka settlement in Longtan. This study aimed to investigate the operation of art festival and analyse the process from a ‘cultural governance’ perspective in order to examine the relationship between local festivals and cultural governance through practical application. Result of this study would establish a suggestion for future research and practice. By recruiting Longtan Dull Ice Flower Art Festival as a case study, this study found out that the process of cultural function and adjustment not only demonstrated the collaboration of literature and arts, but also highly related to the maintenance of Chung Chao-cheng Literature Pavilion since it supports locality via art activity and hence discovers the unique style of the town. The cultural function indeed gradually formed a centralised indicator which changed the previous discrete situation, unleashing true purpose and value therefore creating a win-win situation.

From an invisible clan to various cultural activities at present, this development shows that the Hakka community has gained certain status in the Taiwan society nowadays. Through the demonstration of Hakka ethnic movement, they learn to voice for themselves and to claim their political and social benefits. As a result, the government decides to set up various Hakka institutions. In 1994, Council for Cultural Affairs launches the community empowerment project of building local communities with individual characteristics. In response to this, local communities start to develop their individualities combining their cultural traditions. In the process, Hakka cultural halls and Hakka artifacts exhibition halls are constructed. The project also includes popularizing art performances; the memorial concerts for Deng Yu Shian are the musical activities born in such a context mentioned above. Deng Yu Shian was an important composer of Taiwanese popular songs under the Japanese regime. He was a Hakka, born in Longtan and died in Cyonglin. Both towns consider Deng as a musical representation of their own and not only establish memorial halls and parks but also hold memorial concerts for him. However, the concerts held in the two places are very different in their styles of performance, programming and in scale. This thesis will focus on how these concerts are used to shape the features of Hakka culture in these two towns.

Recently, more and more literature has pointed out that excessive emissions of greenhouse gases cause global warming problems, in order to reduce the excessive use of fossil fuels, many scholars have devoted themselves to the use of renewable energy such as wind power and solar energy as a source of power generation. However, renewable energy is intermittent energy, and its power supply is unstable, which will threat the safety and reliability of traditional power supply, so microgrid is evolving, along with polices of the promotion, and development of related technology. The main purpose of this study is to take the microgrid power system installed in Taoyuan Longtan as a reference case to explore the various costs and benefits generated from three scenarios of combination of the use of solar and wind technologies. Specifically, three combinations of renewable technologies are evaluated in which scenario one is 1MW solar system connected with grid and scenario two is 1MW wind system connected with grid and scenario three is 0.5MW solar system 0.5MW wind system connected with grid, and net benfit of externality benefit and cost are estimated for each of the scenarios, the HOMER software developed by the United States Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory are applied for the above-mentioned estimated. The optimal allocation of generation costs as well as externality benefit and cost are obtained as well. The main findings can be summarized as below: 1.Generation costs of PV-Grid hybrid generation system (4.89 NT dollars per kilowatt hour)> Wind-Grid hybrid power generation system (4.14 NT dollars per kilowatt hour)> PV-Grid hybrid power generation system (3.96 NT dollars per kilowatt hour), showing that the PV-Grid hybrid generation system can provide the minimum generation costs. 2.The three kinds of Hybrid Microgrid Generation System externality benefit and cost calculation results have net benefits. The PV-Wind-Grid hybrid generation system (1.08 NT dollars per kilowatt hour) > PV-Grid hybrid generation system (0.84 NT dollars per kilowatt hour) > Wind-Grid hybrid generation system (0.53 NT dollars per kilowatt hour). But the cost of the three kinds of Hybrid Microgrid Generation System are higher than the cost of traditional thermal power. In the future, with the development of technology, the cost of renewable energy generation equipment and the cost of energy storage equipment will be reduced. Microgrid systems will have lowerr generation costs than traditional generation. Keywords:Cost-Benefit Analysis, Smart Grid, Microgrid, Distributed Power

Focusing on Hakka Indonesians who immigrated to Taiwan between the late 1950s and the early 1960s and live as expatriates in Longtan Township in Taoyuan County, Taiwan, the current study observed their lifestyles and cultural representations as seen from their perspective. The current study, relying on oral accounts of these Hakka Indonesians, also depicted the social progress at that time. To delineate the differences of various aspects among Hakka Indonesians after their immigrating to Taiwan and to explain why these differences occurred, the current study compared Hakka Indonesians in Jiulong Village with those in Shanghua Village (a district in Longtan Township); and Hakka Indonesians in Longtan Township with those in Changzhi Township (a district in Pingtung County). This study has three aims. First of which is to understand through Hakka Indonesians’ migrating progresses and experiences how migration shapes life, and to explain, using historical analysis, why they immigrated to Taiwan. Second aim is observing from Hakka Indonesians’ perspective the fabric of their lives and cultural representations after immigrating to Taiwan; how they became accommodated to the community where different groups reside; and their decisions in the extent to which they became acculturated when the customs of their own culture clashed with those of the host culture. Taiwan is a typical immigrant society that possesses diverse populations and cultural characteristics. But ethnic minorities’ cultural characteristics are being lost over time. The current study, therefore, wished to foreground the differences between populations of Hakka Indonesians, despite their common ethnicity, and to urge documenting of their cultural characteristics.

Longtan is located at the end of Southern part in Taoyuan, with the plateaus as the frequent style. Its height is between 150m to 230m above sea level, while with higher terrain at the Southeast, and lower at the Northwest. The area is famous for scientific researches and military forticifies. Frequent participationg in aviation trainings and missions, the local microclimate plays crucial role on safety as well as successful implement; therefore, understanding the characteristics of microclimates. is indispensable. Based on Longtan’s microclimate statistical data from 2009 to 2011, this research develops and analyzes the effect of the wind field, water field, temperature field and other weather types, and the risks to aviation from low visibility, low ceilings, thunderstorms to season’s change as well. This can provide important considerations for relevant authorities . The research shows the main factor to, the local convection and geography effects is the afternoon thunderstorms, and typhoons rank the 2nd. High-pressure reflux during the transition period between winter to spring (February and March) and the cold fronts during morning times (between 06:00hrs to 09:00hrs) are the major period of times to provoke front fogs and sea. Sea fog, which can lower the visibility in the West and Northwest; which can cause the presence of low ceilings soon after the low visibility. In general speaking, Low ceilings can be always seen during winter time (November to February); the cold and wet continental high-pressure style before the passing of the spring front (March and April), or the spring rains, contribute to the low ceilings, and moring times (between 06:00hr to 09:00hr) are the most frequent ones. The research indicates that the direct correlation of the simultaneous occurrence between low ceiling and low visibility is 97.6%, which can be for future research .
