Abstract:
This study examined early external childcare in relation to development from age 7 to 20. A Swiss sample was used (N = 1,225; 52% male). Development included multi-informant-reported externalizing behavior, internalizing problems, prosocial behavior, delinquency, and substance use. Growth curve models revealed that, dependent on the informant, time in a daycare center was related to increased externalizing and internalizing problems until at least age 11. It was not related to delinquency. Roughly three days per week at a daycare mother or playgroup was related to increased externalizing behavior. External family care was associated with increased prosocial behavior. Finally, time in a daycare center was associated with fewer externalizing but more internalizing problems and substance use for children from vulnerable backgrounds. This relation with substance use lasted to age 20.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThis article explores some of the main reasons why feminist mobilisation around the issue of child daycare in Britain has been so limited and its impact so modest. It describes this mobilisation, comparing it with experience in other countries and with mobilisation on other issues. It suggests that the modest achievement to date is largely attributable to factors other than the lack of feminist pressure. Indeed feminist reservations were partly a realistic response to these external constraints. But they were also a consequence of the particular character of second wave feminism in Britain and of the questions posed by the issue of childcare for feminists. These questions included the nature and proper role of the state, motherhood, the value of paid employment for women, social class and the tension between short and long-term strategies for social change.

Abstract:
Malnutrition and sarcopenia are prevalent and growing health issues in older populations. Early detection is important to implement proper interventions. However, little is known about malnutrition and sarcopenia in daycare facilities, the most dominant long-term care service. In this study, the prevalence of and factors associated with malnutrition and sarcopenia in older individuals who commute to community daycare facilities were evaluated. The cross-sectional study included 62 older individuals screened for malnutrition and sarcopenia on their first day in a daycare facility in Japan. Daily physical activity and basal diseases were also evaluated. According to Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria, 40.3% (25/62) of patients were malnourished and 59.7% (37/62) were well nourished. The Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 evaluation found that 12.9% (8/62) of patients showed no sarcopenia, whereas 87.1% (54/62) had sarcopenia. The prevalence of well-nourished sarcopenic individuals was the highest (45.2% (28/62)), followed by malnourished sarcopenia individuals (40.3% (25/62)). All malnourished individuals were sarcopenic and 14.5% (9/62) were well nourished and nonsarcopenic. Daily physical activity was significantly lower among sarcopenic individuals. Subgroups showed no significant difference in comorbidities. The prevalence of malnutrition and sarcopenia was relatively high. Activity-related sarcopenia seemed to precede malnutrition. Early detection of malnutrition and sarcopenia in daycare facilities should be encouraged for early intervention.

Abstract:
From the perspective of training and qualification standards for infant teachers and childcare teachers, this study aims to deal with the overall discussion on improving the training system of infant teachers and childcare teachers by exploring the experiences of kindergarten and daycare center managers for field teachers. As a result of the study, first, both kindergarten and daycare center managers recognized that there was a difference in expertise according to the type of training institution. Teachers with long educational years were considered to be relatively superior in terms of competencies required for work. Second, kindergarten and daycare center managers commonly recognized the difference in competency between early childhood education majors and non-child education majors such as childcare and other child-related departments. Third, both kindergarten and daycare center managers recognized that a lot of improvement was needed in terms of educational practice. Fourth, both kindergarten and daycare center managers pointed out the effectiveness and ineffectiveness of incumbent education at the same time. Fifth, the qualification acquisition path was influencing in the appointment and recruitment process. Based on the analysis results, suggestions can be provided as follows. First, it is desirable to reorganize both the training system for infant teachers and childcare teachers centered on the subject system and to abolish the short-term training system. Second, various improvements should be made in educational practice. Third, incumbent education should be field-friendly. Finally, this study is meaningful in that by analyzing the perception of institutional managers in terms of the training system, the necessity that the training process to secure expertise for each system is needed to change for the unification of childcare center and kindergarten.

Abstract:
This study responds to three gaps in the research regarding emotional labor: First, research has tended to privilege the structural forces influencing emotional labor while giving minimal attention to agency. Second, research on emotional labor has privileged work in traditional organizations, foregoing the possibility that owner-operators of small businesses (such as in-home daycare providers) experience the demands of emotional labor. Third, the emotional labor research has examined primarily short-term contexts. The current research reports the results of an interview-based study designed to explore how the participants in a long-term relational context (in-home daycare providers) communicatively manage the emotional display expectations of parents of children in their care. The themes that emerged from the data—structural strategies, interactional strategies, and individual strategies—represent communicative means that in-home daycare providers used to manage the emotional display expectations of parents. The study concludes by discussing the merit of considering the existence of and need to explore further emotional labor in nontraditional organizations such as owner-operated and in-home businesses.

Abstract:
Sekolah Islam Intan (SII) Surabaya is one of the institutions of early childhood education which has three types of education, playground, kindergarden, and daycare. Children who attend daycare at SII spend up to 54 hours a week. Children who are entrusted in daycare have a higher susceptibility to disease transmission. The long duration of children's activities at the school, the habit of closing the mouth using the palm of the hand and immediately resume other activities when coughing, as well as the lack of habits and the application of clean and healthy living behaviors can increase the chance of ARI transmission to children. The purpose of this counseling to increasing awareness of clean and healthy living behaviors, as well as teaching cough ethics as prevention of ARI transmission. Counseling is effective enough to change the knowledge, beliefs, and behavior of the SII education community in dealing with mild A, as well as efforts to disseminate information by reminding other community members to follow the WHO standard precautions against ARI by participants

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to determine the criteria the parents consider while choosing or preferring a preschool or a daycare. As the world has been changing very rapidly and women are coming out and working as equal to men. Working women are so competitive that they don’t compromise their career. They want to be successful and that’s how preschool and daycare centers have come into the picture. Preschool and daycare centers offer parents to keep them in the center for some fixed hours and make them learn some basic skills. They also groom the kids. This made the preschool and daycare centers the growing business. The preschool has been mostly using technological infrastructure which goes with today’s world. The teaching method the preschool is adopting is mostly based on visual and audio. The visual audio learning makes the child remember for long run. This also helps the kids to be prepared for the primary educational school. Now a day the parents have become more competent and want their children to be at par than others. Even the parent’s mindset has changed and wants their children to be very efficient and skilled at every level and every place, field. The educated and well-settled people are ready to keep their child in preschool or daycare. As they find this would be the apt place for them to grow and conquer all the fine motor skills and gross motor skills. The corporate world has made a rule to the employees stating that it is very important to be partnered with a preschool and daycare so that it is easy for the employees to leave their child and work tension free. The questionnaire consists of 31 variables and primary data has been collected using questionnaire from 155 respondents. The exploratory factor analysis has been used to analyze the data on SPSS 20.0 software. There were 9 factors that were extracted. Such as Technology Infrastructure, comfort, academic policy, gross motor skills, teaching methods, brand value, point of parity, convenience, school activities are the factor that parents give least importance.

Abstract:
Physical inactivity and possible sarcopenia pose a challenge for long-term care, especially in rural areas. We aimed to examine the prevalence of and associated factors for physical inactivity and possible sarcopenia in rural community daycare stations. A total of 275 adults aged 55–98 years (75% women) were recruited from all 11 rural community daycare stations in Northern Hualien, Taiwan. Physical inactivity was defined as less than 150 min/week of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity. Possible sarcopenia was defined according to the Asian-specific criteria from 2019. Multiple linear and logistic regression analyses were used to determine associated factors for physical inactivity and possible sarcopenia. The prevalence of physical inactivity and possible sarcopenia was 29.1% and 68.7%, respectively. About 86.8% of possible sarcopenia were ascribed to poor five-times-sit-to-stand performance. After adjusting for covariates, poor lower-limb muscle function, e.g., slow gait speed, was associated with possible sarcopenia and physical inactivity. However, physical inactivity was not independently associated with possible sarcopenia (adjusted odds ratio 1.95, 95% confidence interval 0.88–4.30, p = 0.100). Our results indicated that individuals with poor lower-limb muscle function were more likely to have possible sarcopenia and physical inactivity. Improving lower-limb muscle function would be a priority task in rural community daycare stations.

Abstract:
Abstract Daycare is an alternative service that can be used by parents who work as an institution that can temporarily replace as long as parents work in the care, care, protection and also guidance of children, especially children with age range 0-6 years . Basically, entrusting a child in the daycare will be helpful, not only for the parents, but also for the child himself. By entrusting children in the landfill, parents will have more time to do daily activities (work) with a sense of security that the child is still nurturing, looking after, and caring for, and for the children themselves daycare is a place to interact and train independence for children Not always dependent on the parent in their daily life. Seeing the usefulness of the landfill, making daycare as a favorite institution of interest by parents who need it. This study describes the indicators that will become the quality standard that must be owned by a landfill so that daycare can be said to be qualified and made a favorite place by the user. The result is 6 indicators that become the quality standard in a daycare; Ratio of child and caregiver, caregiver, curriculum of activities, environment and facilities, and partners with parents. These five indicators can then be used as landfill managers as a foundation when developing a landfill so that the institution can continue to grow and develop. In addition, this indicator can also be a parent as a reference / reference when they will choose a landfill. Keywords: daycare, management institution, quality standars, services

Abstract:
ObjectiveThe aim was to test if targeting managers with an educational intervention reduces absence among pregnant employees.MethodsThe study was a non-blinded cluster randomised trial conducted in hospitals and daycare institutions from two administrative Danish Regions and two Danish municipalities. Clusters (work units) were assigned randomly and non-blinded to either (1) intervention, where all managers were invited to participate in a 3-hour seminar addressing needs and options for adjustment of work in pregnancy, or (2) control, with practice as usual. The primary outcome based on payroll data was long-term pregnancy-related absence, defined as ≥12.5% cumulated absence during pregnancy weeks 1–32. Intention-to-treat analysis was applied using mixed logistic regression.ResultsNinety work units were included (56 hospital departments and 34 daycare units) with 451 pregnant employees in the intervention group and 464 in the control group. Work units had on average 11 pregnant employees with no difference between the groups. 103 of the 216 invited managers (48%) participated in a the 3-hour seminar. In the intervention group, 154 (34%) had long-term pregnancy-related absence during pregnancy weeks 1–32 vs 166 (36%) in the control group. Relative odds of having long-term pregnancy-related absence, when being in the intervention group, was 1.06 (95% CI 0.71 to 1.58), with an interclass correlation coefficient of 0.07.ConclusionAn educational intervention targeting managers did not reduce pregnancy-related absence among pregnant employees.Trial registration numberNCT03002987.

Abstract:
The protection and fulfillment of children's rights are the responsibility of the father and mother. However, for parents who work as laborers, this is difficult to do because of long working hours, working shift systems, heavy workloads, dual role conflicts of women workers, economic pressure, weak social support from extended families, and family conflicts. APSAI, ISBS, LPM-UAJ, and the Workers Union Organization built a collaboration to provide quality daycare services for child workers in industrial areas. The Cakung Bonded Zone (KBN) was chosen as the pilot project. KBN Cakung was chosen as an area where it is important to have daycare facilities because the majority of workers are women. Based on the results of this study, it is hoped that the need for daycare establishment at KBN Cakung can be identified. It is hoped that KBN Cakung will become the first industrial area to support efforts to fulfill children's rights with quality through a daycare in industrial areas. The data collection design used was a mixed-method (quantitative and qualitative) to produce a broader understanding of the needs and patterns of early childhood care in KBN, Cakung. Questionnaire and FGD guide instruments were used to identify the context of patterns and needs of early childhood care for workers in KBN. Based on the results of the needs mapping of 12 child participants in the target age range of beneficiaries, 11 parents who work in factories and 11 parents who do not work in the factory but live around KBN Cakung, the following results are obtained: (1) There is a need for the availability of child care service facilities. early, but facilities are not yet available, (2) Parents care about child caregivers and are ready to contribute a maximum of IDR 500,000 per month (including food), (3) Potential beneficiary children want a safe, spacious, simple environment, and caregivers that can make children comfortable and can be invited to play, (4) The necessary care for children is what can make children: smart, healthy, safe and independent.

Abstract:
Dog social behaviour has been well studied, but little is known about affiliative relationships between dogs. We report a yearlong study of dominance and affiliation in 24 dogs at a dog daycare facility and provide additional details on dog relationships through long-term observations of pairs of dogs who lived together in the same household or met frequently for years. Companion dogs formed highly differentiated relationships with one another. At daycare, some dyads affiliated and displayed one-way submission (formal dominance), others affiliated without a dominance relationship (egalitarian), and the majority of dyads did not affiliate at all (agonistic or non-interactive). The dogs in household environments showed formal and egalitarian relationships, and two dyads exchanged two-way agonism without submission (unresolved). Sex influenced the types of relationships dogs formed, with mixed sex dyads more likely to affiliate and less likely to exhibit dominance than same-sex pairs. Dominance influenced the nature of affiliation in relationships; egalitarian dyads were more likely to play and showed more equitable gentle affiliation. Gentle affiliation was reciprocal in the group as a whole, but it was highly skewed in many dyads, especially those with dominance relationships. Gentle affiliation was usually, but not always, directed up the hierarchy. Certain dyads affiliated at much higher rates than others, indicating that the dogs formed friendships. Most friends were mixed sex and/or egalitarian pairs, but friendships occurred in all of the sex class/dominance combinations. Long-term observations demonstrated how dyadic relationships can change over time. Such highly differentiated relationships suggest significant social complexity in dogs.

Abstract:
Pre-K seems to be the new kindergarten. Parents and caregivers are faced with increasing pressure to ensure their children are school ready.Every parent and caregiver possesses these skills; however, a little extra support and guidance can go a long way in a child’s literacy development. Pre-K is a great place for children to build and learn new literacy and social emotional skills. Teachers are there to help the families begin navigating the school system and to give their children the building blocks to become successful lifelong learners. However, this process begins long before a child enters school. Often, the first time children and families are exposed to these skills is at their local library, either through activities geared towards families or through partnerships with pre-K and daycare classrooms.

No single virus has the health impact of influenza. Influenza has remained epidemiologically important because it escapes host immune pressure through antigenic variation, is highly contagious, and can cause pneumonia and death in the most susceptible hosts. Viral transmission is most efficient where contact between susceptible hosts is greatest. For humans, this includes institutional settings such as daycare centers, schools, hospitals, and long-term care facilities.Of the three types of influenza, influenza C is relatively nonvirulent. Influenza B is most virulent in children; its antigenic stability presumably allows the adult population to benefit from acquired immunity. Influenza A is virulent in people of all ages, especially in those at the extremes of age or with immunocompromising disease; the attack rate in persons over 70 years of age is four times that of adults under 40 years of age. A major factor accounting for recurrent influenza A epidemics is change in the virus (antigenic drift and shift) that renders the vaccine less efficacious. Influenza epidemics cost billions of dollars and result in thousands of deaths annually. This discussion will focus on the prevention and treatment of influenza A in the long-term care facility.

Abstract This article describes the results of the pilot testing phase of the first LangPerform dialogue interpreting simulations, which replicated authentic communication situations in a Finnish daycare center and consisted of interpreting and sight translation tasks. Five students with German and three with English as their B-language participated in the pilot testing. Afterwards, they were interviewed about their experience and thoughts about the simulations. They were positively surprised by the authenticity of the simulation and regarded the simulation as an excellent additional training method for self-training and self-evaluation. Negative feedback that drew away from authenticity mainly concerned the predetermined time reserved for interpreting, which resulted in there sometimes being long pauses or, on several occasions, not enough time to interpret.

Abstract:
Endometriosis is a gynaecological pathology that manifests as pelvic pain, infertility and cyclical issues. The presence of endometriotic tissue outside the uterus is the hallmark of endometriosis and commonest sites are ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterosacral ligaments and lateral pelvic peritoneum. Ovarian endometriotic cyst (EC) is typically a chocolate cyst that is often diagnosed by a combination of clinical history examination and radiological imaging. However, the definitive diagnosis requires histopathological confirmation. The management is complex and requires long term suppression of menstrual cycle and ovarian cystectomy. We hereby illustrate a case of a young female who presented with EC. During a routine daycare laparoscopic cystectomy, a rare finding of endometriotic stones was ascertained per-operatively. It has not been reported previously as per our knowledge. Patient remained well post operatively and was discharged in evening.

Abstract:
This document provides recommendations for monitoring and treatment of children in whom bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) has been established and who have been discharged from the hospital, or who were >36 weeks of postmenstrual age. The guideline was based on predefined Population, Intervention, Comparison and Outcomes (PICO) questions relevant for clinical care, a systematic review of the literature and assessment of the evidence using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. After considering the balance of desirable (benefits) and undesirable (burden, adverse effects) consequences of the intervention, the certainty of the evidence, and values, the task force made conditional recommendations for monitoring and treatment of BPD based on very low to low quality of evidence. We suggest monitoring with lung imaging using ionising radiation in a subgroup only, for example severe BPD or recurrent hospitalisations, and monitoring with lung function in all children. We suggest to give individual advice to parents regarding daycare attendance. With regards to treatment, we suggest the use of bronchodilators in a subgroup only, for example asthma-like symptoms, or reversibility in lung function; no treatment with inhaled or systemic corticosteroids; natural weaning of diuretics by the relative decrease in dose with increasing weight gain if diuretics are started in the neonatal period; and treatment with supplemental oxygen with a saturation target range of 90–95%. A multidisciplinary approach for children with established severe BPD after the neonatal period into adulthood is preferable. These recommendations should be considered until new and urgently needed evidence becomes available.

Abstract:
Amount raised: Dietitians of National Cancer Institute (NCI), Putrajaya, Malaysia has organized various activities in conjunction with Dietitians' Day 2017 celebration on 19 October 2017. Among the activities was a charity sale. During the event, healthy self-made ice creams were sold. At the end of the project, we managed to gather RM552 which was later spent for next project in Daycare Centre, NCI. Background and context: Malnutrition is a common problem among cancer patients and likely to develop or worsen during specific cancer treatments especially when early and appropriate nutritional intervention is not properly indicated. To address this issue, the Dietetics and Food Services Department of NCI has come up with the initiative to conduct a Nutrition Support Group (NSG) among cancer patients receiving chemotherapy in Daycare Centre, NCI. The NSG involves giving nutrition education to patients, discussion and sharing session among patients as well as food tasting of high-calorie high-protein recipes. To finance the project, the amount of money gathered from the charity sale was used. Aim: To raise fund for NSG at Daycare Centre, NCI. Strategy/Tactics: We aim to educate the public and cancer patients by promoting healthy desserts recipe using fresh and healthy ingredients. We decided to sell ice creams and provide recipes for everyone who purchased our products. We chose ice creams because Malaysia is located near the equator and the weather all year long is mostly warm. Malaysians usually enjoy ice cream during hot weather. Furthermore, cancer patients particularly those who are on treatment may develop oral ulcers and difficulty swallowing. This group of patients will benefit the coolness from ice cream to soothe their burning oral cavity. We created 3 different ice creams flavors; watermelon sorbet, chocolate banana peanut butter and mango madness. Program process: The charity sale was located at outpatient lobby, in front of Oncology Clinic. This was the most strategic location to attract the public and patients to our charity sale. The charity sale was a success as the ice creams were sold out within 2 hours. We also gathered some positive feedback from the customers regarding our ice creams. Costs and returns: The total production cost was RM350. Gross sale was RM552 with a net profit of RM202. With this amount, we were able to conduct NSG for 12 sessions from December 2017 to May 2018. Each session cost RM15 for purchasing items for food tasting. What was learned: We look forward to organize such event at a bigger scale to gather larger amount of financial resources. More education sessions have to be organized to help patients receive their targeted nutrition requirement. With this self-initiated fund-raising campaign, many more projects can be done without having to rely to the limited hospital budget.

Abstract:
Background and Objective: The purpose of this investigation was to examine the prevalence, related factors, and cut-off value of body mass index for sarcopenia in community-dwelling elderly covered by long-term care insurance. Methods: Design was a cross-sectional study, in which113 consecutive community-dwelling elderly with long-term care insurance who underwent rehabilitation at a daycare center in Japan from January 2016 to January 2018, those who were aged ≥65 years old and could walk were included. Those in whom skeletal muscle mass index could not be measured were excluded. The determination of sarcopenia was made according to the criteria of the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia. We analyzed the data with the unpaired t-test, χ2 test, logistic regression analysis, and receiver operating characteristic curves. Results: The 99 elderly meeting the criteria were included and divided into the sarcopenia group (n=36) and no sarcopenia group (n=63). The prevalence was 36.4%. The sarcopenia group was significantly older and had lower body mass index, skeletal muscle mass index, and grip strength than the group without sarcopenia (p <0.05). Age and body mass index were extracted as significant sarcopenia- related factors (p <0.05). The cut-off value of body mass index for sarcopenia was 22.6 kg/m2. Conclusion: The prevalence of sarcopenia in the elderly in the long-term care insurance region was 36.4%, and age and body mass index were extracted as sarcopenia-related factors. The cut-off value of body mass index for sarcopenia was 22.6 kg/m2.

Singing Together was the third part of a multi-phase investigation examining the benefits of singing with older adults in an adult daycare program (Phase 1), and in a long-term care facility (Phases 2 and 3). Phase 3 focused on residents of a long-term care facility who were diagnosed with mild to moderate cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease, and was unique in its extended scope of examining their choral participation with caregivers, or significant others. Pain, energy level, and mood were assessed using multiple objective and self-reported tools. Results of 16 weeks of choir sessions indicate statistically significant reduced perceptions of pain and increased energy and mood for both residents and significant others. Qualitative themes in this study included: encourages maximized participation; facilitates interaction and bonding; promotes enjoyment and fun; encourages improved mood and attitude; facilitates energy and motivation; promotes stress release and relaxation; and singing as a recognized therapy. Future implications of these findings will be discussed as well as overall analysis of the research project. A literature review outlining the effects of clinical choral singing with respect to older adults was provided in Part1: Clinical Effects of Choral Singing for Older Adults [1]of this two part paper.

Abstract:
Abstract In German there is a long tradition of institutionalized daycare center-based early education. These institutions are concerned with Bildung, Erziehung und Betreuung - the education and care of children up to six years of age. Education and childrearing as well as care are all important but separate processes in German early childhood settings. Looking back, this theoretical division has a very long tradition. However, the energized public, political and professional discussions about the PISA results at the beginning of the 21st century led to Bildung and ECEC settings becoming increasingly important. Taking into account this complex and difficult historical development it is interesting to have a critical look at the dominant programmatic frames that characterize the German ECEC system nowadays: Bildung and quality of early education. The former double motif of education (Bildung und Erziehung) on the one hand and care (Betreuung) on the other hand remains an important aspect of German ECEC practices. Nevertheless, in the political arena and professional discourses Erziehung and Betreuung have been pushed into the background, to remain in symbolic form. Bildung and quality of early education seem to be in the spotlight. We will show how those programmatic frames have taken shape and are manifested in early childhood programs and projects.

Abstract:
Background: As a result of the increase in older people covered by long-term care insurance (LTCI), prevention of sarcopenia and maintenance and improvement of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) have become important themes. This study aimed to clarify both the differences in HRQOL in older people with and without sarcopenia covered by LTCI and the correlation between HRQOL and physical function. Methods: Participants were 101 older people with LTCI at a daycare center in Japan. We investigated clinical factors using the EuroQol five-dimension three-level questionnaire (EQ-5D-3L). Analysis was by unpaired t-test, Mann–Whitney U test, chi-square test, analysis of covariance, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient. Results: Compared to the no sarcopenia group (n = 40), the sarcopenia group (n = 24) had significantly lower body mass index, skeletal muscle mass index, gait speed, EQ-5D-3L, and adjusted EQ-5D-3L (p < 0.05). The EQ-5D-3L showed a significant correlation with handgrip strength in the sarcopenia group (p = 0.02) and significant correlations with gait speed and one-leg standing time (both, p = 0.01) in the no sarcopenia group. Conclusion: We clarified differences in HRQOL in older people with and without sarcopenia covered by LTCI. This information on the interrelationship between HRQOL and physical function may help maintain and improve HRQOL in these people.

Abstract The purpose of this symposium is two-fold: (1) to promote mutual understanding and communication regarding the long-term caregiving plans for older immigrants/refugees between policymakers and researchers in the fields of behavioral and social sciences and (2) to discuss the needs for connecting local needs of older immigrants/refugees and their families with a global plan for aging society. The symposium is structured by three empirical studies on older adults and their caregivers by behavioral and social sciences researchers, followed by a presentation of the needs for an international convention on the rights of older people by an advocate in the global network to promote older people’s health. Miyawaki and colleagues focus on the residential status quo, family relations, and prevalence of chronic diseases among older Vietnamese refugees in Houston, TX, U.S.A. Liu’s qualitative study on Taiwanese professional caregivers’ perceptions of clients in adult daycare services reveals the relation between staff’s negative image of aging and their practice. Toyokawa conceptualizes middle-aged Mexican immigrants’ sense of family obligation, as their obligation for reducing children’s caregiving burden and the endorsement predicts their well-being. Three presenters point out the need for standards for basic needs of refugees/immigrants, staff training, and the quality of long-term care, and discuss the meaning of culturally sensitive support based on their studies. Finally, Marumoto advocates the need for an international convention of the rights of older people and standardization of the quality of long-term care. Specific approaches to ‘harness the network’ between local and global efforts are discussed.

Abstract:
Crisis communication in social service organizations is an under-researched area. Nevertheless, this topic is very relevant, given the increasing threats to individuals and society. In the face of these threats, there is a growing need for effective communication in organizing and delivering social assistance. The outbreak of COVID-19 has changed interpersonal communication and the very nature of organizations’ work. This unprecedented situation has prompted an analysis of the level of preparedness of social services organizations to adapt in the long run to an acute, changed reality. This paper aims to investigate how daycare centers and residential care institutions were prepared to act during a crisis, with a particular focus on communication through the organization’s external channels – websites and social networks. The desk-based method was applied to analyze the external communication of 387 organizations providing social care and daycare services to children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities from all Lithuanian municipalities. In assessing the capabilities and responsibility of institutions providing social services to ensure consistent external communication, this study ranks alongside others that have examined social service provision practices during the COVID-19 outbreak. However, this study differs from others by highlighting the responsibilities of social workers in combating misinformation and fake news. The research emphasizes the need for consistent, continuous, clearly presented information. It identifies systemic and organizational gaps in the external communication skills of social service providers. It can be concluded that due to these gaps, social service provision institutions were unable to counterweigh fake news, which became “mainstream news” (Wiswanath et al., 2020) and posed a threat to public health, public safety, and human lives. The voice of social services’ providers was also missing in the wider socio-political context. Here, technological, legal, and political prerequisites emerged to address the knowledge gap and the technological exclusion of those at the margins of communication. Nevertheless, the study showed a lack of active participation of social service providers in this discourse, although they were closest to those experiencing the digital divide. The pandemic significantly adjusted the point of view on the importance of communication in social work, its goals and nature. The main weight has shifted from the pursuit of therapeutic goals toward technological, information dissemination, and risk management aspects.

Abstract:
Health researchers increasingly work with patients in a participatory fashion. Active patient involvement throughout the research process can provide epistemic justice to patients who have often only had an informant role in traditional health research. This study aims to conduct participatory research on patient experiences to create a solid research agenda with patients and discuss it with relevant stakeholders. We followed a participatory research design in 18 sub-studies, including interviews and group sessions (n = 404 patients), and dialogue sessions (n = 367 professionals and directors in healthcare and social work, municipality civil servants, and funding agencies) on patient experiences with psychiatric care, community care, daycare, public health, and social work. Findings from the eight-year study show that four priorities stood out: attention for misuse of power and abuse; meaningful participation; non-human assistance, and peer support. Moreover, that: (1) patients, based on their experiences, prioritize different topics than experts; (2) most topics are trans-diagnostic and point to the value of a cross-disability approach; and (3) the priorities of patients are all too easily dismissed and require ethics work to prevent epistemic injustice. Long-term investment in a transdisciplinary community of practice offers a solid basis for addressing patient-centered topics and may impact the quality of life of people living with chronic illness, disability, or vulnerability.

Abstract:
Education and fertility (including childrearing) are foundational processes in societal metabolism, and the relationship between them can have profound, long-term effects on a variety of institutions, including the labor market, the family (especially care for the elderly), and educational institutions themselves. In postindustrial countries, conventional wisdom holds that there is a strong inverse relationship between education and completed fertility, but this has not been carefully examined in recent decades, and the topic has been almost completely neglected for men. In this article, we address these core questions and relations, drawing on the Norwegian population registers for cohorts born 1940 to 1964. Among women, the relationship between completed fertility and educational level attained at age 39 has become substantially less negative. In all cohorts, better-educated women have later first births and remain childless more often than do the less educated. The negative effect of education on higher-order birth rates net of the impact of later motherhood has, however, disappeared. Family-friendly ideologies and policies, including better access to high-quality daycare, are likely the engine behind this shift. Among men, a positive relationship has emerged: the better educated become fathers later than others, but fewer remain childless, and there has been an increasingly stimulating effect of education on second- and third-birth rates. We discuss these sex differences in light of the persistent differences between mothers' and fathers' roles.

In Bangladesh, about four million women work long-hours in Readymade Garment (RMG) factories without proper maternity benefits which raises concern regarding optimum IYCF practice. We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study in Dhaka, Bangladesh to identify the knowledge and common practices of IYCF among mothers working in Readymade Garment sector. Ninety-three women of reproductive age (15-49 years), working in Readymade Garment sector, with children aged 6-23 months, were interviewed. Our study revealed- majority knew about exclusive breast feeding (EBF) (76%), duration to continue breast feeding (73%) and early initiation of breast feeding (53%). The exclusive breast-feeding practice in mothers employed in RMG sector was 44%. Three-fourths of the mothers knew and initiated complementary feeding timely. Both knowledge regarding age-adjusted minimum meal frequency (MMF) (19.4%) and minimum quantity (8.6%) were low; compared to actual practices. Nearly two-fifth of the mothers (40%) had to start working before their child reached six months of age enabling them to provide their baby with breastmilk substitutes. Mothers employed in Readymade Garment sector had better IYCF practice than general population. Proper workplace environment with mandatory breast-feeding corners, daycare facilities and ensuring maternity benefits in these mothers could help achieve an even better IYCF practices for their children.

Abstract:
Background Children with language delay have deficits in the ability to learn and use language, either expressive and/or receptive despite otherwise normal development. Language delay could be influenced by either internal factors (within the child) and external factors (from the environment). Timely identification and modification of these risk factors can allow early intervention to reduce child disability and are associated with better long-term outcomes. Objective To identify possible risk factors related to language delay in children, such as bilingualism, socioeconomic status, maternal and caregiver education level, use of digital media, absence of story reading sessions, breastfeeding patterns, siblings, parenting methods, and maternal occupation. Methods This observational, analytic study included 102 children aged 24-36 months from four daycare centers in Manado, North Sulawesi, selected by cluster random sampling. Parents were interviewed to gather demographic information of child age, gender, presence of older siblings, maternal occupation, socioeconomic status, maternal/caregiver educational level, use of digital media, absence of story reading sessions, breastfeeding patterns, parenting methods, and bilingual environment. Children’s language development was assessed by the Capute Scales. Results Multivariate analysis revealed 2 factors significantly associated with increased risk of language delay; namely absence of storybook reading (OR=0.16; 95%CI 0.03 to 0.72; P=0.017) and bilingualism (OR=12.58; 95%CI 1.57 to 100.81; P=0.017). Conclusion Story reading sessions is associated with decreased risk of language delay, shile bilingualism is associatd with increased risk of language delay.

Abstract:
Abstract Latinos are disproportionately affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) compared to non-Latino Whites. Family caregivers need access to high-quality information, education, and support. The study objective was to understand the information seeking behavior of Latino caregivers of individuals with ADRD. We conducted qualitative interviews in Los Angeles County with Latino caregivers of individuals with ADRD (N=21) and with healthcare and community stakeholders serving Latinos with ADRD and their caregivers (N=6). Caregivers sought information about ADRD, healthcare services and treatment, available community resources, caregiving skills, and short- and long-term care. Having limited time to seek information, lacking skills to navigate the Internet, and insufficient availability of information created barriers to accessing information. With access to information, caregivers increased their knowledge about ADRD, enrolled the person with ADRD in a memory/dementia clinic, participated in treatment decisions, attended community events, learned how to respond to challenging behaviors, and enrolled in daycare/respite programs. Caregivers experienced barriers to using information due to the insurance and immigration status of the person with ADRD and due to services only being available in English. Our study contributes new knowledge on the accessibility and use of information by Latino caregivers and their unique barriers in transforming information access into meaningful results. Healthcare and community-based providers can use our study findings to tailor informational interventions to the needs and preferences of Latinos and to the unique barriers they face in using information to support their caregiving role.

Abstract:
Study abroad begins long before students leave their own shores. The moment that children enter daycare, nursery school, or kindergarten for the first time, they are in foreign territory, and all their antennae are out, testing, absorbing, learning. They begin to develop the first of their many multiple identities. They are no longer "Johnny" or "Sarah" whom everyone knows and loves at home, but Johnny or Sarah whom no one knows nor initially cares about, and they have to figure out what kind of a new identity they will develop so the danger zone becomes as safe as home. Leaving familiar surroundings- the sounds, smells, safety, and food of home- and realizing, quite abruptly, that they must learn to adapt to the demands and needs of strangers, is the first and the most challenging "trip abroad" they will ever take. They will use the same set of skills, more mature, more polished (we hope) when they arrive on a foreign campus and move in with a host family or into an international dormitory. Learning to make the journey with ease, whether it is on the first day of school or the day a plane drops one in a foreign field, is a necessary accomplishment. We have to make friends out of our peers; we have to gain the respect of our teachers; we have to develop curiosity and concern about the people around us. The stranger they seem, the more there is to learn. To fear diversity is to fear life itself. As the world becomes smaller and more integrated, the more crucial this accomplishment grows.

Abstract:
Purpose It is well understood that women’s work situations are critical to their well-being during pregnancy and in terms of potential risks to the fetus. It has also long been known that undocumented women workers face particularly difficult work conditions and being undocumented precludes access to key social benefits (i.e. public health insurance, paid maternity leave, child benefits and subsidized daycare) that support pregnant women and new mothers. Yet, this paper aims to write about the intersection of undocumented women’s pregnancy with work experiences. Design/methodology/approach Drawing on the results of a broader qualitative study that was focussed on access to healthcare for undocumented (and therefore, uninsured) women who were pregnant and gave birth in Montreal, Canada, the authors begin this paper with a review of the relevant literature for this topic related to the work conditions of undocumented women, how work exacerbates barriers to accessing healthcare and the resulting health outcomes, particularly in relation to pregnancy. The authors highlight the social determinants of health human rights framework (Solar and Irwin, 2010), before presenting methodology. In conclusion, the authors discuss how an understanding of undocumented women’s work situations sheds light on their pregnancy experiences. Findings The authors then present participants’ work conditions before becoming pregnant, working conditions while pregnant and employment options and pressures after giving birth. Originality/value The authors emphasize that attention to undocumented pregnant women’s work situations might help health and social service practitioners to better serve their needs at this critical point in a woman’s life and at the beginning of the life of their children, born as full citizens.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to examine gender gaps in work-related outcomes in the context of Covid-19. The authors hypothesized that the Covid-19 pandemic would create a gender gap in perceived work productivity and job satisfaction. This is because when couples are working from home the whole day and when schools are closed, women are expected to devote more time to housework and childcare. Design/methodology/approach The authors used a sample of employed women and men from dual-career families who were working from home since Covid-19 lockdowns started. In total, 286 US-resident full-time employees participated in this study. Participants were asked to report their work productivity and job satisfaction before and since Covid-19 lockdowns. Findings It is found that before the Covid-19 pandemic, there were no gender differences in self-rated work productivity and job satisfaction. However, during the lockdown, women reported lower work productivity and job satisfaction than men. Research limitations/implications Participants retrospectively reported their work productivity and job satisfaction before Covid-19. However, there are unlikely to be systematic gender differences in retrospective reports of these measures. Further, the authors only sampled opposite-sex dual career parents. Future research needs to examine the effects of lockdowns on women and men in other types of households. Practical implications Given the nature of the Covid-19 pandemic, many regions might experience multiple periods of lockdown, and many workplaces have already adopted or are likely to adopt long-term work-from-home policies. The findings indicate that these long-term changes in the workplace might have long-term negative effects on women’s perceived productivity and job-satisfaction in dual-career families. Social implications The findings suggest that society needs provide additional support to women working from home and taking care of children or other dependents, particularly during lockdowns or during times when schools and daycare centers are closed. Originality/value The current research is one of the first to claim that despite the greater amount of time that women spend in housework and childcare than men, during normal times, they are as productive and as satisfied with their job as men. However, the Covid-19 pandemic increased women’s housework and childcare beyond a threshold, thereby creating a gender gap in work productivity and job satisfaction.

Abstract:
Nasal decongestants are ones of the most popular and widespread medicines due to high frequency of respiratoryinfections. But on the other hand they are characterized by significant abuse potential for users seeking such effectsas euphoria, psychostimulation, less of appetite and lose the weight. The affections of the cardio-circulation and nervous systems are the most frequent complications after overdosing ofthe nasal decongestants. The development of the strikes in the young age was associated with the nasal decongestantsabuse in every tenth patient. The cases of the malignant arterial hypertension, cerebral hemorrhages, ischemic strokes, heart decompensationafter the nasal decongestants abuse is known as nasal decongestants poisoning. And although the side effects moreoften develop when nasal decongestants are used orally, intranasal way could not be considered as absolutely safe, especially in cases of overdosing. The development of the psychotic disorders is one of the most frequent nasal decongestants adverse effects. Theelderly people with organic brain damage, drug addiction, mental illness are in the risk group for the developmentof psychotic complications.Misuse of the nasal decongestants in children is especially dangerous because of the high risk of the developmentof the life-threatening toxic poisoning. Fatal cases of poisoning were associated with small age of a child, usingseveral medicines with the same ingredient, using decongestants in a daycare setting, mistakes in measuring andidentification the medicine, the absence of the doctor’s prescription, use of the product for adult age.Using nasal decongestants in supine position of the patient may lead to the significantly dose increase inside thenasal cavity and may cause toxic poisoning.Adolescents are quite sensitive to the development of nasal decongestants side effects with such risk factors asage, gender, family income, physical and mental health, use of other medicines and alcohol. The special type of the adverse effects of the long-term using of the nasal decongestants is the rhinitismedicamentosa taking place in adult persons with predisposition to the nasal hyperreactivity. The diagnosis ofthe rhinitis medicamentosa is based on the nasal hyperactivity and swelling of the nasal mucous membrane incombination with poor response on treatment caused or exaggerated by long-term use of topical nasal decongestants. The development of the rhinitis medicamentosa depends on a number of factors such as the type of nasaldecongestants, the type of preservative, the presence of risk factors that determine the patient's predisposition to thedevelopment of nasal hyperreactivity. Here we review the existing literature concerning the adverse effects of the nasal decongestants including thedevelopment of the rhinitis medicamentosa.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives A balanced diet is especially important for children and adolescents to meet their nutritional needs. The aim of this study was to use the Optimized Mixed Diet (OMD), a recognized nutritional recommendation for children and adolescents in Germany, to characterize the different meals in terms of their food and nutrient profiles and to determine how these meals complement each other. Methods The OMD is based on a 7-day meal plan with the usual 5 daily meals in Germany, i.e., 3 main meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and 2 snacks (mid-morning and afternoon). Foods as well as energy and nutrients were specifically identified for each of the different meals, then averaged over the 7 days, and finally summed for the entire day. Only the energy content of the meals was fixed; all other components resulted from the typical meal pattern. The total daily nutrient intake could then be compared with German nutrient reference values to verify the adequacy of the total diet. Finally, proven meal-based dietary guidelines were derived from the food and nutrient patterns of the optimized meals. Results Although the hot meal (lunch) provides only 25% of the daily energy intake, it is relatively rich (> 25% of the daily intake) in most vitamins and minerals, which distinguishes it from the other meals. The cold meals (breakfast, dinner) are especially rich in calcium and vitamin B2, due to the preferential use of dairy/milk in these meals. The two optimized snacks have a surprisingly balanced nutrient profile, each contributing nearly 12% of the daily energy intake. This is achieved by enhancing these meals with cereals, raw vegetables and fruits, while allowing foods with low nutrient density, such as sweets and pastries. Conclusions This analysis provides comprehensible guidelines for all meals of the day in a proven national guideline for children and adolescents. Meal-based guidelines could help children become accustomed to a healthy, varied diet and facilitate flexible coordination of family meals, as well as provide guidance for daycare and school meals. Variation between and within meals also opens up the possibility of setting different stimulus patterns at different levels (neurocognition, emotion, digestion), which can not only lead to more enjoyment of food but also open up long-term health benefits. Abstract:
Background: In the setting of global warming, natural disasters are increasing in pace and scope. Although natural disasters themselves do not cause outbreaks, the breakdowns in sanitary infrastructure and the displacement of populations, often to crowded shelters, have caused outbreaks. On August 26, 2017, category 4 hurricane Harvey made landfall near Corpus Christi, Texas, causing catastrophic flooding and displacing >30,000 residents from the Southern Gulf Coast region. Dallas accepted >3,800 evacuees at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center mega-shelter for 23 days, where a medical clinic was erected in the convention center parking garage. The medical clinic uniquely included a dedicated infection prevention team composed of local volunteer infection preventionists, healthcare epidemiologists, infectious diseases providers, and health department personnel. Methods: Evacuees were housed at the Dallas mega-shelter from August 29 through September 20. The infection prevention team maintained a presence of 3–4 members during clinical operations in shifts. The team conducted an initial needs assessment upon opening of the shelter medical clinic, facilitated acquisition of adequate numbers of hand sanitizer stations, sinks with running water, portable hand-washing stations, portable toilets and showers, and cleaning products. The infection prevention team coordinated and oversaw environmental cleaning services (EVS) carried out by local hospital EVS staff. Protocols for cleaning, disinfection, communicable disease testing, isolation, and treatment were created. In addition, education and training materials for the implementation of these protocols were distributed to volunteer staff. The infection preventionists created and provided oversight of the designated isolation units for respiratory, gastrointestinal and dermatologic infections of outbreak potential. Infection prevention rounding tools were developed and executed daily in the clinic, at the on-site daycare center, dining area, and the general shelter dormitory. Vaccination for influenza was formalized under a protocol and administered at the clinic and via mobile vaccination teams in the chronic illness section of the dormitory. Results: In tota3,829 residents were housed at the mega-shelter for 23 days. Moreover, 1,560 patients were seen in 2,654 clinic visits at the shelter medical clinic. In total, 48 (19%) clinic visits were for respiratory symptoms, 228 (9%) were for dermatologic problems, and 215 (8%) were for gastrointestinal symptoms. Also, 32 patients were referred to the isolation unit within the clinic. Overall, 98 influenza vaccines were administered. There was 1 confirmed case of influenza and 1 confirmed case of norovirus. Conclusions: No known transmission of communicable diseases occurred in this long-term, natural disaster–related mega-shelter, likely attributed to having a comprehensive infection prevention team of on-site volunteers available throughout the shelter operation. This model should be considered in future large-scale shelter settings to prevent disease transmission.Disclosures: NoneFunding: None
