This paper aims to argue that private equity funds play a critical role in the Korean economy and that their presence, now and in the future is essential. Moreover, domestic private equity funds will be complementary to foreign private equity funds, not a substitute, at lease for the time being. In arguing so, we will look into the investment experiences of foreign private equity funds and see how foreign private equity funds have helped transform the economy in the pose-financial crisis era. We will also look at the domestic private equity funds market co examine the replicability of private equity-driven growth in Korea. The paper will conclude with further recommendations for the growth of the private equity market. In the past five years or so, Koreans have come to be familiar with names such as Carlyle, Newbridge Capital, Lone Star, etc. These are the names of major foreign institutional investment firms that bought out the Korean domestic banks, Koram Bank, Korea First Bank, and Korea Exchange Bank. Recently, with the incident of the Lone Star scandal disclosed in regards to its acquisition of Korea First Bank, the Korean media have given extensive coverage co the issues relating to private equity funds. Especially after the scandals involving foreign investors, there is public discontent about the large volume of foreign private equity funds, mainly in the financial sector, that seem to ‘eat and run’ once increased profits have been made. People have scrutinized investments of this kind with critical eyes. Nevertheless, we should acknowledge the contributions that the foreign private equity funds have played in various sectors of the economy in the pose-crisis period. Foreign funds have invested in troubled Korean firms, understanding any risks involved, and successfully turned them around for the better. To chat end, even if domestic private equity funds that have been set up since 2004 have not yet performed co the market expectation, we have to understand chat they have further roles to play as we anticipate growth of the M&A market in the coming years.

The process of Czech and Moravian immigration to Texas is a well-known phenomenon. Since 1848, tens of thousands decided to cross the ocean to seek a better future in the “Lone Star state.“ Although their history is well documented, there are still themes to be explored. Their religious activity and the connection it has created with their metropolis is one of them. The church and its institutions sent priests to America to attend to the immigrants in their mother tongue and helped them preserve their cultural identity. Furthermore, they organized the construction of their sacred places that would remind the parishioners of their home country. One example could be the famous painted churches still present in Texas today.
This topic has not received proper attention from historians because it requires studying sources on both sides of the Atlantic. The presented contribution tries to change this unflattering fact using the microhistorical approach. Its aim is threefold. First, explain the historical dimension of the religious connection between the Czech and Moravian immigrants in Texas with their metropolis. Second, describe the sacred places of the immigrants, how they were built, what role they played in their everyday life, and how they established a bond with their country of origin. Third, what importance did the sacred places of the Czechs and Moravians have in preserving their language and cultural identity? The microhistorical approach demands the use of various and fragmented sources, and this study will be no exception. It will use archive material from Austria and the Czech Republic, principally the funds of the religious organizations that supported the immigrants in Texas, such as the Leopoldine Society. Furthermore, the article will use published contemporary personal recounts and secondary literature. The content of these sources will be critically analysed to answer the research questions and hopefully contribute to the theme of religion and its invaluable role in an immigrant society.

The purpose of this quantitative investigation was to examine whether performance (1-Year, 3-Year, and 5-Year annual returns) differences exist among fund categories by size and style (large-cap growth, large-cap blend, mid-cap growth, and small-cap growth) and fund ratings (5-Star and 4-Star) controlling covariate variables (standard deviation, turnover rate, and top-10 holding) of the United States equity MFs. Morningstar Inc. provided an insightful measure of fund performance annual returns and fund efficacy ratings. The study utilized the Analysis of Covariance and Multivariate Analysis of Covariance methods. The investigation revealed that the large-cap growth fund category produced superior annual returns than other fund families. The five-star-rated funds performed better than the four-star-rated funds. Turnover and top-10 percentage asset holdings had a statistically significant effect on fund annual performance. Investors and asset managers should consider the fund style, size, fund ratings for making short-term, medium, and long-term financial investment decisions. The paper aims to assess various aspects concerning the payment phase of the old-age pension scheme, the socalled second pillar of the pension system in Slovakia. However, the conclusions may also be useful for other pension systems. Using the Lee-Carter model and standard actuarial methods, we conclude that the second pillar is advantageous for the high-income groups or in case of high performance of pension funds. We also address the issue of deferring the purchase of a lifetime annuity. Deferral can be beneficial when the yield of the pension fund exceeds a certain threshold value. This threshold usually raises with increasing age. We argue that the temporary pension is a disadvantageous product and its recent cancellation is correct. The main contribution of the paper subsists in a three-state model of long-term care insurance, using which we calculate corresponding replacement rates. Combined with a lifetime annuity, long-term care insurance can be beneficial.

Abstract Abstract 2288 The TEEN/TWEN study is an observational, prospective, case-controlled, multicenter study to evaluate long-term prophylaxis patients and to determine the consequences of switching from prophylaxis to on-demand treatment. Thirty-eight males, aged 14–29, with severe hemophilia A were enrolled and followed for 18 months. Group 1 (n=22) remained on prophylaxis, Group 2 (n=5) switched to on-demand treatment ≤12 months prior to entry, and Group 3 (n=11) switched to on demand ≥13 months prior to entry. The primary and main secondary efficacy criteria were presented at ISTH, 2011 in Kyoto, Japan, and showed clear benefits of continuing prophylaxis in decreased bleeding and improved quality of life. Here, we present the secondary and exploratory variables examined in the study, including the Gilbert score, target joints, Hemophilia Activities List (HAL), Godin Leisure Time, treatment satisfaction, and State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Results: Gilbert score changes were small, and limited to the ankles, knees, and elbows. Group 2 had the highest overall bleeding score. Of the exploratory variables, Group 3 usually had numerically worse values than the other groups. For the HAL, Group 2 had a higher increase overall than Group 1. The STAI showed an increase in trait anxiety for Groups 1 and 2 during the study, and increase in state anxiety for group 1 but a decrease for Group 2. No other distinguishing findings emerged. Conclusions: Although the primary and main secondary efficacy variables showed clear benefits of continuing prophylaxis, the remaining secondary variables and the exploratory variables did not clearly distinguish between Groups 1 and 2, although most showed worse results for Group 3. For these variables the changes in Groups 1and 2 were usually small, occurred in a similar pattern in both groups, or showed inconsistent patterns. The changes in Group 3 suggest that quality of life decreases with length of time off prophylaxis. Nagari Piobang is the hometown of Haji Piobang, one of the purization figures of Islam in Indonesia. As his homeland, the Piobang people should also inherit the spirit of Haji Piobang's struggle to uphold Islamic teachings. But in reality, people are no longer passionate about religious activities. This action research aims to revive the community's spirit of implementing Sharia in Nagari Piobang, West Sumatra. This research method is Action Based Community Development, which is action research that seeks to revive the spirit of the community by bringing up the glory of its characters in the past. Through this action research, it is hoped that it can regenerate the spirit of the community to uphold sustainable Islamic law with positive activities for the young generation of Piobang. Several programs are designed to spark public interest in religious activities, including Tahfiz Quran and Tahsin. Both of these programs are very popular, considering that this kind of activity has been absent in the community for a long time. The program's sustainability is also guaranteed by special funds from the community, amounting to approximately 30 million, for the fulfillment of infrastructure facilities. The Action Based Community Development activity carried out during Ramadan 1444 H was very satisfying. All success standards designed at the beginning of the activity are achieved with indicators that exceed expectations. Although it had dimmed, it turned out that the spirit of Hajj Piobang did not die in the Nagari Piobang, West Sumatra community. This is evidenced by the revival of religious programs for the younger generation with a form more following the times.

Doctors usually diagnose a disease by evaluating the pattern of abnormal blood vessels in the fundus. At present, the segmentation of fundus blood vessels based on deep learning has achieved great success, but it still faces the problems of low accuracy and capillary rupture. A good vessel segmentation method can guide the early diagnosis of eye diseases, so we propose a novel hybrid Transformer network (HT-Net) for fundus imaging analysis. HT-Net can improve the vessel segmentation quality by capturing detailed local information and implementing long-range information interactions, and it mainly consists of the following blocks. The feature fusion block (FFB) is embedded in the shallow levels, and FFB enriches the feature space. In addition, the feature refinement block (FRB) is added to the shallow position of the network, which solves the problem of vessel scale change by fusing multi-scale feature information to improve the accuracy of segmentation. Finally, HT-Net’s bottom-level position can capture remote dependencies by combining the Transformer and CNN. We prove the performance of HT-Net on the DRIVE, CHASE_DB1, and STARE datasets. The experiment shows that FFB and FRB can effectively improve the quality of microvessel segmentation by extracting multi-scale information. Embedding efficient self-attention mechanisms in the network can effectively improve the vessel segmentation accuracy. The HT-Net exceeds most existing methods, indicating that it can perform the task of vessel segmentation competently.

Pensar o envelhecimento na sociedade em que vivemos ainda é algo cercado de estereótipos e preconceitos, que tendem a se acentuar na perspectiva daqueles que vivenciam esta etapa da existência humana no universo das Instituições de Longa Permanência para Idosos – ILPIs. Essas Instituições – conhecidas também como Asilos, Casas de Repouso, Clínicas Geriátricas e tantos outros nomes que a literatura convencionou chamar –, funcionaram, durante muitos anos, como “instituições totais”, conceito formulado por Goffman (1974) ao se referir aos espaços que servem de residência e trabalho, onde um grande número de indivíduos com situação semelhante, separados da sociedade mais ampla, levam uma vida fechada e formalmente administrada. Com os estudos e discussões implementadas por pesquisadores da área gerontológica, temos observado um esforço em se avançar para além dessa modalidade de instituição, prova disso a nova nomenclatura utilizada para se referir a este tipo de instituição. Ao que parece, essa mudança permitiu um desenvolvimento, ainda que apenas na forma, já que o conteúdo ainda necessita de transformação. Além disso, faz-se necessário compreender como essa estrutura afeta as relações entre os indivíduos que lá interagem, sejam os idosos que ali residem, sejam os profissionais que lá desempenham suas funções. Cabe destacar que as relações que se estabelecem entre estes se dão através das tarefas do cuidado e de como este é construído e percebido pelos diferentes pares. É nesse espaço em transformação que desenvolvemos nosso estudo, no intuito de perceber quais seriam as representações que os mais velhos e seus cuidadores tem sobre o cuidado e os processos e conhecimentos envolvidos na instalação deste, especialmente nas ILPIs do município de Passo Fundo/RS. Para a realização do estudo foram feitas observações nas onze Instituições existentes no município, a partir de um roteiro de observação e foram entrevistados idosos e cuidadores pertencentes às mesmas. Com base nas observações e entrevistas, foram desenvolvidas cinco categorias de análise, que serviram de base para as considerações finais e sugestões apresentadas ao final da discussão.Thinking the aging society in which we live is still surrounded by stereotypes and prejudices, which tend to emphasize the perspective of those who experience this stage of human existence in the universe of Long-Stay Institutions for the Elderly - LSIEs. These institutions - also known as Homes, Nursing Homes, Geriatric Clinic and many other names that the literature called -, worked for many years as "total institutions", a concept formulated by Goffman (1974) to refer to areas that serve as a residence and work, where a large number of individuals with similar situation, separated from the broader society, lead a closed life and formally administered. With the studies and discussions implemented by gerontological researchers in the field, we have seen an effort to move beyond this type of institution, proof of the new nomenclature used to refer to this type of institution. Apparently, this change allowed a development, if only in form, as the content still needs to change. Furthermore, it is necessary to understand how this structure affects the relationship between individuals who interact there are elderly people living there, there are the professionals who perform their duties. It should be noted that the relations established between them occur through the tasks of care and how it is constructed and perceived by different peers. This is the space in which we change our study, in order to understand what the representations that the elderly and their caregivers have on the care and processes and knowledge involved in this installation, especially in LSIEs the city of Passo Fundo / RS. For the study observations were made in the eleven institutions in the city from a tour of observation and were interviewed elderly and caregivers belonging to them. Based on observations and interviews were developed five categories of analysis, which served as the basis for final comments and suggestions made at the end of the thread.

There is an unsettledness now in after-school childcare. The stay-at-home mom years are largely over. Will children, even very young children, stay home alone or hang out with peers, risking loneliness or engaging in problem behavior? Will some new form of supervised care emerge? The authors in this collection have spent time in community after-school programs and have learned what happens there. The authors suggest that after-school programs can be an important part of a system of childcare—as long as we can find ways to build programs for small and scattered populations as well as for densely packed ones, and as long as the money to fund programs can be found. The money is important. Many of the programs discussed in this book are specifically targeted to children from families with low incomes. These are the families least likely to be able to pay for care. A reader leaves this book with both anxiety and hope about the future of childcare in the United States.

Almost every country throughout the globe has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The virus's propagation has a disastrous effect on both human health and the economy as a whole. The COVID-19 global recession is the worst since World War II ended. According to the IMF's April 2021 World Economic Outlook Report, the global economy declined by 3.5 percent in 2020, 7 percent drop from the 3.4 percent growth predicted in October 2019. While almost every IMF-covered nation saw negative growth in 2020, the decline was more extreme in the world's poorest regions. The global supply system and international trade of all countries, including India, were affected by the nationwide lockdown in India and around the world to stop the pandemic from spreading. Since the beginning of 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on the global business climate. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in significant public health and economic problems in South Asian countries and the worst impacted being India, Bangladesh and Pakistan in recent years. The nationwide lockdown adopted by the countries was effective in slowing down the spread of the coronavirus in South Asia, but it came at a substantial financial and social cost to society. Manufacturing activities in Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines have shrunk sharply. Tourism, trade and remittances, and all major sources of foreign money for South Asian countries, have been substantially impacted. The COVID-19 spread has had a significant influence on global financial markets. The international financial and energy markets substantially dropped as the number of cases began to rise globally, primarily in the United States, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Iran, and South Korea along with South Asian countries. Reduced travel has had a substantial impact on service businesses such as tourism, hospitality, and transportation. According to IMF, (space required after,) 2020 South Asian economies are likely to shrink for the first time in 4 decades. The pandemic has pushed millions into poverty and widened income and wealth disparities because of premature deaths, workplace absenteeism and productivity losses. A negative supply shock has occurred with manufacturing and productive activity decreasing due to global supply chain disruptions and factory closures. This resulted in a severe short-term challenge for policymakers, especially when food and commodity prices rise, exacerbating economic insecurity. Failure to achieve equitable recovery might result in social and political unrest, as well as harsh responses from governments that have been less tolerant of dissident voices in recent years. Almost every area of the Indian economy is being ravaged by the pandemic. But the scope and degree of the damage vary from sector to sector within each area. One of the worst-affected areas in India is the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) sector. Apart from MSMEs, Agriculture and Agro-based industries, Banking companies and NBFCs and Social Sectors are also in jeopardy. The pandemic creates turmoil in the Capital Market and Mutual Funds industry. India's auto manufacturing and its ancillary sectors were badly hit during the initial stages of the pandemic when lockdown measures were adopted and the situation continued to remain subdued for many quarters. It is still uncertain whether this recession will have long-term structural ramifications for the global economy or will have only short-term financial and economic consequences. Additionally, the speed and the strength of the healing may be crucially dependent on the capability of the governments to accumulate and roll out the COVID-19 vaccines. In the context of the pandemic and its devastating impact on the Indian economy, an edited volume is proposed which intends to identify and analyse the footfalls of the pandemic on various sectors and industries in India. The proposed edited volume endeavours to understand the status, impact, problems, policies and prospects of the agricultural and agro-based industries, Banking and NBFCs, MSMEs, Social Sector, Capital Market and Mutual Funds during the pandemic and beyond. The proposed volume will contain research papers/articles covering the overall impact of the pandemic on various sectors, measures to be adopted to combat the situation and suggestions for overcoming the hurdles. For this, research papers and articles will be called from academicians, research scholars and industrialists having common research interests to share their insights relating to this area. It is anticipated that the volume will include twenty to twenty-five chapters. An editorial committee will be constituted with three chief editors and another external editor to review the articles following a double-blind review process to assure the quality of the papers according to the global standards and publisher's guidelines. The expected time to complete the entire review process is one month, and the publication process will start thereafter. AbstractLet us start with two pieces of data, one from history and one from economics, and a deduction drawn from sociology and politics. The first, from 85 years ago, occurred when the judge presiding over an Australian Royal Commission into the devastating “Black Saturday” bushfires pronounced “We have not lived long enough”. What he meant was that European settlers in this country, Australia, had not learned how to live in a land characterised by climatic extremes of drought, fire and flood. The words echo in environmental historian Tom Griffiths’ “we have not yet lived long enough”, after his review of the long history of lack of preparedness for such events, despite the repetitiousness with which that lack of preparedness has issued forth from reports and enquiries too numerous to mention here. The second is the Productivity Commission’s (2014) finding that 97% of Australia’s public funds spent on disasters went to crisis management and recovery and only 3% on preparedness. What we might derive from these points is that “there is no such thing as a natural disaster” (Hartman & Squires, 2006). The history of Indigenous fire management over millennia, leading to early European settlers’ puzzlement over what appeared to be curated/estate like landscapes, underscores the fact that human preparedness and the lack of it are material factors in the severity and impact of any “natural” disaster, that is, if we may have lived long enough by now.

AbstractIt is crucial in the modern world to not only start thinking about savings and investing but also to act on it. For long term financial stability and growth, one needs to start saving and then carefully investing the savings in different investment avenues. Savings and investments are used interchangeably. But the fact is that both have different meanings with one common motive of safeguarding the future in terms of finance. This paper attempts to study the savings and investments outlined in the first ten years of employment in Dubai. Dubai has all possible investment avenues available, just like any other economy may have. The primary data were collected from 118 respondents, with 65 men and 53 women. It is found that most of the employees are aware of the savings and investments. Males are more aware and hence making more savings and investments as compared to females. It is also found that the majority of the employees save 10–20% of their earnings monthly. The purpose of saving is future security followed by safety and tax savings. Further research found a significant relationship between investment awareness and Gender and the relationship between educational qualification and selection of the investment avenues.Purpose: This study focuses on the savings and investment opportunities for the employees; further it will explore various factors that motivate employees to save and invest and factors that affect the investment behaviors of the employees.Methodology: Primary and secondary data sources were used for data collection. Primary data was collected from the targeted population who are in the first ten years of their employment in the UAE by using Google Forms. A probability sampling method was selected for this study. The research instrument was administered to 120 respondents out of which 118 were returned. 2 respondents could not return the form and hence the final sample size was 118, with 65 men and 53 women participating in the survey.Findings: A significant relationship between gender and investment awareness. Men are relatively more aware of the investment and savings avenues as compared to the women. Women are more driven to invest in gold as compared to their male counterparts. There is a positive relationship between level of education and awareness regarding saving and investment.Recommendations: Creating monthly and yearly budget is crucial for the financially safe future. Investments in liquid funds to have more flexibility can be considered in this age group. Consulting a financial advisor to make wise investment choices is recommended. Further research can be conducted on the gender-wise investment choices, investment choices at different age level from the early years of earning till retirement.

AbstractResilience is defined as “The ability to prepare and plan for, absorb, recover from and more successfully adapt to adverse events” (US National Academies). Resilience has four pillars: • Anticipate: the ability to anticipate and reduce the impact of shocks through preparedness and planning, • Absorb the ability to absorb and cope with the impacts of shocks and stresses. • Adapt: the ability to change in response to multiple, long-term and future risks, and to learn and adjust after a shock materializes. • Transform: the ability to take deliberate steps to change the systems that create risk, vulnerability and or inequality. How does insurance intervene in building resilience? The outcome of insurance is to restore property and livelihoods in case of an adverse effect. It does that by providing a cash infusion into the socio-economic system of the affected communities immediately after the event. The cash is used to restore property and avoid interruption of commercial and industrial activity. Insurance also intervenes in terms of reducing impact of stresses (which are the more extensive types of risk) since it enables a system of “maintenance” by providing funds for recovery under minor but more frequent events. For most developing countries, governments have been the insurer of last resort when it comes to catastrophe risk (referred to as Cat Risk in the insurance industry). The reason is that level of cat insurance penetration in most developing countries is very low, sometimes lower than 1%. The assurance of government intervention coupled with the lack of effectiveness of the financial transaction associated with a traditional insurance policy negate any incentive for individuals to acquire a cat insurance policy. The Turkish Compulsory Insurance Program or TCIP is one of the early experiment to change that paradigm and to provide a meaningful role for cat insurance in emerging economies. After a slow start, TCIP has now developed the financial capacity and the spread of coverage to play a significant role both in the financing of risk but also in supporting earthquake risk reduction in Turkey. New cat insurance products based on parametric indexing have since emerged. These insurance products could further improve the efficiency of TCIP and other cat insurance pools by making them more attractive to individuals, thereby scaling up their contribution to building resilience.

Abstract As any good investor knows, the commonly used adage “buy when there is blood in the streets” applies not only to literal times of bloodletting but also to metaphorical ones. It is best to buy cheap assets in the wake of some crisis. With this in mind, in August 2003 the Dallas-based private equity firm Lone Star Funds believed it had found an unusually promising investment deal in South Korea. The country’s macroeconomic conditions were sound, but twin economic shocks—the 1997 Asian financial crisis and a 2002 credit card crisis— had inflicted heavy damage on local businesses in the financial and industrial sectors. Overwhelmed by bad debt, thousands of Korean firms faced insolvency. Lone Star determined that the Korea Exchange Bank (KEB), the country’s only foreign exchange bank, provided a great opportunity to enter the Korean financial market.

Founded in 2013 as a unification of dispersed elements of development banking activities in France, Bpifrance has been one of the most active proponents of the new techniques of development financing, such as venture capital and fund of funds investments. Bringing together these new techniques of direct equity investment with more traditional forms of loan and guarantee business, Bpifrance provides a one-stop shop model for the promotion of SMEs and start-ups in France, including the human capital formation of entrepreneurs. This, we argue, represents a reconfigured mode of dirigiste intervention in the French economy. Placing Bpifrance both in the context of the European field of development banking, as well as the historical context of state dirigisme post World War II, this chapter explores both the dangers and merits of such a new dirigiste model, which on the one hand through its synergy effects of different business line provides the state with an efficient tool to foster innovation and entrepreneurship, but at the same time is fragile, as it is potentially subject to overburdening political demands for intervention, demands which in the long run might threaten its financial viability.

Rural America has a number of problems that cannot be addressed by simply thinking in abstract and superficial liberal versus conservative terms. Rural schools need high-speed internet, and oftentimes telecommunication companies have little interest in bringing high-speed internet to rural areas since the potential for profits are not there. In addition, Medicaid is important to rural schools since the funds from this program can go a long way toward helping students in rural schools stay in school and graduate. While it is often heard that “self-reliance” reflects the views of rural America, government programs (both federal and state) are needed. As high-speed internet goes through technological changes, many rural areas, specifically rural schools, will be further left behind, which increases the need for government help.

To make the issue stark, let us begin with a few assumptions. I believe that these assumptions are probably roughly accurate, but none is certain, and I will not try to justify them here. Instead, I will simply take them for granted for the sake of argument. First, global warming has begun and is likely to increase over the next century. We cannot be sure exactly how much or how fast, but hot times are coming. Second, a significant amount of global warming is due to human activities. The main culprit is fossil fuels. Third, global warming will create serious problems for many people over the long term by causing climate changes, including violent storms, floods from sea-level rises, droughts, heat waves, and so on. Millions of people will probably be displaced or die. Fourth, the poor will be hurt most of all. The rich countries are causing most of the global warming, but they will be able to adapt to climate changes more easily. Poor countries that are close to sea level might be devastated. Fifth, governments, especially the biggest and richest ones, are able to mitigate global warming They can impose limits on emissions. They can require or give incentives for increased energy efficiency. They can stop deforestation and fund reforestation. They can develop ways to sequester carbon dioxide in oceans or underground. These steps will help, but the only long-run solution lies in alternatives to fossil fuels. These alternatives can be found soon if governments start massive research projects now. Sixth, it is too late to stop global warming. Because there is so much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere already, because carbon dioxide remains in the atmosphere for so long, and because we will remain dependent on fossil fuels in the near future, governments can slow down global warming or reduce its severity, but they cannot prevent it. Hence, governments need to adapt. They need to build sea walls. They need to reinforce houses that cannot withstand storms. They need to move populations from low-lying areas.

As such, this paper aims to evaluate the interdependence of quality and environmental adaptation system management of financial resources in Long-term Stay Institutions for the Elderly. The question here is if the quality of the physical spaces is actually a direct reflection of financial contributions, thereby ensuring the ambience and spatial quality in such institutions. The research aims to evaluate the physical environment through the Ergonomic Methodology of the Built Environment (VILLAROUCO, 2009) in four institutions – one public, two private and one with a mixed source of funds, all located in Northeastern Brazil. The intent of the analysis of the built environment is to highlight any non-compliance with existing laws for Long-term Stay Institutions for the Elderly, which would jeopardize the safety and well-being of elderly residents. Thus, it allows checking the implications financial and administrative aspects have on the quality and ambience of physical spaces and the observation of the importance of these factors for the quality of the built environment.

Snow cover is an indicator of the fluctuating climate, resulting from the change in the regime of winter precipitations and air temperatures. Our previous study has revealed significant decreasing of the snow cover in the high altitudes of Vitosha mountain. The current sturdy is now focused on these two meteorological variable � the type and amount of the winter precipitations and the seasonal change of the air temperature. Monthly and seasonal values of precipitation amounts, number of days with different type of precipitation and mean air temperature from 6 meteorological stations in Vitosha and Stara planina have been used in this survey. The main period of investigation is 1960-2021 and the stations altitudes range from 1000 up to 2376 m. Statistical analysis is performed in order to assess the variability and possible differences in the investigated characteristics from long-term data series for two main climatological periods 1961-90 and 1991-2020. Statistically significant decreasing tendencies in the precipitation amounts have been discovered for all stations. Increasing trend of the mean seasonal air temperature is also observed, however manifestly only for the highest regions where remarkable rising tendency could be determined in the beginning of the 1990-es. Number of days with snowfalls also shows declining behavior in agreement with the general precipitation amount tendency. Recently increasing days with rain could be find out only in the high altitude regions of Stara planina. This investigation is part of a common project for investigation of the current variability of the snow cover and winter precipitations in the mountain regions of Austria and Bulgaria and is funded by the Bulgarian National Science Fund and the Austria's Agency for Education and Internationalisation in the call of the bilateral program Scientific and Technological Cooperation between both countries.

Bridges are a significant component of the ground transportation infrastructure in the United States. With about sixty percent of bridge failures due to hydraulic causes, primarily scour, application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis techniques to the assessment of risk of bridge failure under flood conditions can provide increased accuracy in scour risk assessment at a relatively low cost. The analysis can be used to make optimum use of limited federal and state funds available to maintain and replace bridges and ensure public safety while traveling on the nation’s roads and highways during and after floods. Scour is the erosion of riverbed material during high flow conditions, such as floods. When scouring of the supporting soil around the piers and abutments of bridges takes place, risk of bridge failure increases. A simulation methodology to conservatively predict equilibrium shape and size of the scour hole under pressure flow conditions for flooded bridge decks using commercial CFD software was developed. The computational methodology has been developed using C++ to compute changes in the bed contour outside of the CFD software and generate a re-meshing script to change the bed boundary contour. STAR-CD was used to run the hydrodynamic analysis to obtain bed shear stress, and a BASH script was developed to automate cycling between computing bed shear stress with the CFD software and computing changes in the bed contour due to scour predicted using the computed shear stress for the current bed contour. A single-phase moving boundary formulation has been developed to compute the equilibrium scour hole contour that proceeds through a series of quasi-steady CFD computations. It is based on CFD analysis of the flow fields around the flooded bridge deck and shear stress computed at the bed modeled as a rough wall. A high Reynolds number k-ε turbulence model with standard wall functions, based on a Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence model, was used to compute bed shear stress. The scour sites on the bed were identified as those sites where the computed shear stress exceeded the critical shear stress computed from a published correlation for flat bed conditions. Comparison with experimental data obtained from the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC), McLean, VA, USA, revealed larger discrepancies than anticipated between the bridge inundation ratio and the scour hole depth. Although scour hole slopes were small for the cases tested, a correction to critical shear stress to account for bed slope was also tested. It did not significantly improve the correlation between CFD prediction and experimental observations. These results may be a consequence of using only excess shear stress above critical as a criteria for scour when other physical mechanisms also contribute to the initiation of scour. Prediction of scour depth using federal guidelines over predicts scour depth by as much as an order of magnitude in some cases. Over prediction is acceptable for purposes of ensuring bridge safety. CFD methods for scour prediction can be a significant improvement of current methods as long as under prediction of scour depth is avoided. Conservative scour prediction using CFD methods can be achieved by using conservative values of parameters such as critical shear stress and effective bed roughness.

There are many environmental remediation challenges around the world today with a radiological connotation. These in turn relate to all aspects of the nuclear industry life cycle as well as the NORM industries and consequences of accidents/incidents. In reality, apart from one or two major exceptions in a few counties who have extensive budgets allocated to environmental remediation, we do not generally see a lot of real progress in the protection of human health and the environment from legacy issues. It is important therefore to determine why this is the case and if there is anything that can be undertaken to improve the situation. There are a number of reasons potentially leading to this lack of progress, namely: • A lack of available funding; • The diversion of funds to other issues deemed to be a greater priority; • No practical experience in resolving such problems; • Lack of established regulatory and/or procedural infrastructure. More often than not when environmental remediation challenges exist, the decision makers only tend to look for final solutions. If such final solutions can’t be achieved, often because of funding restrictions, then little or no progress is generally made. However, there is the potential through the phasing of environmental remediation work to find some early winners and to start to reduce the risk and detriment to human health and the environment, even if the improvement seen is in the short term initially. When further funding becomes available or technology improves then the longer term solutions could be implemented. It is important to ensure that any interim solutions are implemented in a manner such that further options or final solutions are not jeopardised. In reality therefore it should be possible to introduce greater sustainability into how we approach environmental remediation, rather than admit defeat at the outset. There are many different definitions for the term sustainability but a useful one can be referenced from the US Sustainable Remediation Forum (SURF): • “Sustainable remediation is broadly defined as a remedy or combination of remedies whose net benefit on human health and the environment is maximised through the judicious use of limited resources.” Industry in general and the nuclear related industries in particular gain very little support and engender distrust so demonstrating some progress in environmental remediation can only be beneficial. We cannot keep leaving legacy issues to get worse. The whole sustainability argument is therefore inextricably linked into the decision making process and additionally often the success of stakeholder engagement. Importantly, on the other hand progress should not be achieved merely for the sake of it, there needs to be a demonstration of overall net benefit. This paper will aim to demonstrate how the application of sustainable decisions and approaches can facilitate improved environmental remediation in those regions where in general the legacy issues remain unsolved. Such sustainable solutions can help deliver both short and long term net benefit to any particular environmental remediation problem.

SMEs are considered the backbone of every economy forming nearly 95% of the private sector globally. As they are mostly family businesses, start-ups or specialized enterprises, they operate mainly locally or regionally with a direct impact to the society, the, employment and the national economy. On the other hand, due to their limited size and operations they cannot afford the cost and effort needed for long term planning and strategy development that can secure the value, volume, reputation and recognition needed to attract investments. The ESG criteria can be considered as a privilege system primarily for the large-scale organizations and the Multinational Enterprises whose financial and human resources can be easier allocated on ESG activities that return serious financial and reputational benefits. Research indicates that more than 90% of the investors invest only in companies with high social and sustainable profiles. The message from investors and consumers is that if companies cant show any sign of changing their business models, they wont be able to sell. The same applies at country level. Finland for example does not offer any business opportunities to any company that does not have a solid and proven sustainability strategy and track record. This trend, for clients and investors, to consider only Green (sustainable) or Pink (Social) products and companies for their purchases and investments, drives all types of organizations towards that adaptation of the ESG criteria. However, and since such a strategy requires investments, resources, funds and time that only Multinational organizations can provide, SMEs are left out from any opportunity to develop, grow, and compete. This paper highlights this ESG discrimination among the SMEs and MNEs and intends to bridge this gap by identifying, in a smaller scale, activities that reflect the ESG criteria and can be implemented by the SMEs at organizational and operational level. Such an approach provides SMEs the opportunity to record, report and receive credit, visibility and recognition for their sustainable, social and ethical governance efforts and actions, that can potentially enlarge their customer base and attract the investments needed to further develop themselves. The proposed approach is based on an assessment that creates an SME ESG roadmap framework for the SMEs to initially identify their ESG awareness and maturity before adopting any ESG related strategy and commitment. The assessment highlights the SMEs capability and maturity to adopt such a mid-range strategy and align their operations with the ESG criteria on a smaller scale. The results of the assessment formulate an achievable ESG related strategy for each SME, identify the key ESG activities to be implemented, indicate their order of execution, and predict a performance score upon the completion of the proposed strategy. This score can be utilized by SMES to receive social, reputational and financial recognition for their contribution to the local and regional society and economy. To secure the relevance of the SMEs ESG oriented activities with the actual ESG requirements, the proposed approach has been developed after studying several ESG reporting and scoring methodologies such as the Refinitiv, FTSE Russel, BHI, and others, and extractive the most relevant ESG requirements and metrics that can be implemented and measured with the abilities of an SME.Due to the significant variations of the SMEs operations, the proposed framework is targeted primarily to SMEs in emerging markets where the economic development and a structured business environments can help such a novel approach in SMEs strategic management and leadership.

An approach to improving the thermal cycle efficiency of combustion turbine (CT) based power plants is to develop thermal cycles with interceding, reheat, recuperation and humidification. Until recently, this was viewed by combustion turbine manufacturers as cost prohibitive and involving new operating and maintenance challenges. Also, early attempts by some manufacturers to develop sophisticated thermal cycles resulted in the realization that significant funds, personnel, and time are required. This investment could not be justified, particularly considering the availability of efficient and economical combined cycle (CC) plants. Therefore, increased efficiency for both simple and CC power plants has been achieved by raising the firing temperature and pressure of the basic Brayton cycle. However, every increase in the CT firing temperature required progressively higher development cost and increased NOx control challenges, which has re-awakened interest in advanced cycles. The Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Technology Center (FETC), in cooperation with combustion turbine manufacturers, is working on an Advanced Turbine Systems Program. The program goal is to develop technologies to provide a significant increase in natural gas-fired CC power generation plant efficiency with thermal efficiency target values in excess of 60%. Materials published in the program show that participating large CT original equipment manufacturers (OEM), are relying heavily on an increase in the CT’s firing temperature to approximately 2600 F (1700 K), with associated advancement in materials and cooling techniques, to achieve the target efficiency. Also employed are some improvements in component efficiency and various methods of utilization of heat in the bottoming cycle. The development of the necessary sophisticated materials and cooling techniques requires very significant development costs and is based on long duration and expensive experimental investigations and field demonstrations. Increasing the bottoming cycle efficiency primarily depends on the practicality of engineering solutions and capital vs operating cost trade-offs, and not on technology advancements. The current Cascaded Humidified Advanced Turbine (CHAT) technology, which utilizes existing, commercially proven combustion turbine and industrial hardware integrated in sophisticated thermal cycles, offers an achievable, practical and cost-effective alternative to a current CC plant. Current CHAT plants require relatively minimal engineering developments associated primarily with a) modification of the power shaft CT’s compressor discharge and turbine inlet plenums — for interfacing the HP shaft and other thermal cycle components — a very important engineering task, but not comparable in complexity to the development associated with further increase of the CT inlet temperature; and b) engineering of an HP expander with an inlet temperature of 1600 F (1145 K), essentially integrating steam turbine and industrial expander technologies. As it was shown collectively in the previously published references, in addition to an efficiency equal to that for CC plants (based on the same CTs), CHAT plants have significantly lower (10–20%) specific capital costs and have important operating advantages (higher than CC efficiency at part-load operation, with excellent load following and dynamic benefits, including rapid start capability). Those features reduce both the CHAT plant cost of electricity and offer a method to improve improve the economics of power generation systems due to the operational flexibility added by a CHAT plant. One of the most effective ways to increase the CHAT plant efficiency is to increase the HP expander inlet temperature from the current level of 1600 F (1145 K), which represents the level of the combustion turbine technology of the late 1960’s – early 1970’s. EPRI and ESPC have identified that a CHAT plant, based on the current combustion turbine technology (with turbine inlet temperature (TIT) of 2550 F (1670 K)), could achieve the ATS Program target efficiency of 60% with an HP expander inlet temperature of approximately 2000 F (1365 K). HP expanders with this relatively low turbine inlet temperature, as shown later, will require cooling of only the first stage nozzles and stage blades, if the newest single crystal alloys are used. However, the increase of the HP expander inlet temperature will be complicated by the relatively-high inlet pressure. This presents a significant engineering challenge, particularly if one would like to preserve the excellent start-up characteristics and other dynamic benefits of the CHAT plant. EPRI and ESPC are co-sponsoring the development of a high pressure expander with a target inlet temperature of 2000 F (1365 K). It will be shown that this HP expander, when integrated with a power shaft based on W 501 FA modified for the CHAT application, results in a power plant that will achieve the ATS Program target efficiency of 60%. This paper presents a) current CHAT plant’s performance and cost characteristics, b) findings of the project for the development of the HP expander with target temperature of 2000 F (1365 K), and c) a comparison of the advanced CHAT concept’s performance and development costs to those of the ATS program. This paper also shows how, in the future, the new ATS technology can be incorporated into even more efficient, cost-effective and reliable CHAT power plants.

Financiers in early-stage entrepreneurial finance are known for their “spray-and-pray” approach, where they fund multiple start-ups expecting profits on a few to compensate losses on a lot of failed ones. We develop a theoretical framework in which financiers compete to fund entrepreneurs in an environment featuring risk, adverse selection, and limited liability. Financiers use steep payoff schedules to screen entrepreneurs, but limited liability implies they can only do so by giving more to all entrepreneurs. In equilibrium, competition for the best entrepreneurs forces intermediaries to offer better terms to all customers, there is cross-subsidization among entrepreneurs, and intermediation profits are zero. Competition among financial intermediaries always forces them to fund projects with negative expected returns both from a private and from a social perspective. This is an extensive margin inefficiency, as all projects are funded at their efficient scale. The three main features of our framework (competition, adverse selection, and limited liability) are necessary to get the inefficient laissez-faire outcome and a role for regulation. The inefficiency shrinks, but some part will always persist, when firms can collateralize some portion of the credit as long as there is still an unsecured fraction. Additional imperfect information, like a credit score, may increase inefficiency. Crucially, a small externality on financiers exacerbates the extensive margin inefficiency, yielding a negative social surplus in the entrepreneurial financing market.
