Cottrell, Anna. London Writing of the 1930s. Edinburgh University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474425643.001.0001.

Abstract:
Exploring London's literary identity during the 1930s Anna Cottrell shows how vital writing was to the capital’s booming leisure scene on the eve of the Second World War. The book explores London and Londoners, with a focus on the way in which London's lower-middle-class citizens became inseparable from central London’s leisure scene in the period’s imagination. In contrast with Modernism’s flâneurs and flâneuses, the key figures of 1930s London literature were shop girls, clerks, dance hostesses, and financially insecure journalists whose leisure hours were spent in London’s cinemas, bars, and glittering teashops. Writing about this type of Londoner and her milieus was at the heart of the decade’s experiments in revitalising the British novel, which to many of the period’s writers and intellectuals appeared to lack energy and authenticity. Meticulous description was central to this project of re-energising British writing, and it is in passages describing London milieus such as the teashop and the Soho nightclub that this book locates the decade’s most original and astute meditations on modernity, mass culture, and the value of ordinary lives.

Abstract:
This article examines the city of London—its history, topography, governance, people—as a most fruitful subject of books in the late medieval period. It considers a poem that praises London’s “renown, riches and royalte” as an example of metropolitan textual production and transmission during the period. It also explores some of the contexts in which manuscript and print were brought together, or conversely kept apart, in the decades which immediately followed the introduction of printing to England by William Caxton in c.1476. In addition, it looks at London readers as a significant audience for texts of wider national significance, the interpenetration of different forms of book production in London at the start of the sixteenth century, and three manuscripts: the two separate volumes of theNew cronyclesplus the Guildhall manuscript of theGreat Chronicle.

Abstract:
At the onset of the Global Financial Crisis in 2007 London was one of the two foremost global financial centres, along with New York. London experienced a 12 per cent fall in wholesale financial services jobs in 2008–9, but a recovery got underway in 2010 and London’s wholesale financial services sector staged a wavering advance. But now there were new challenges, in particular the avalanche of financial regulation coming from the UK, the EU, the US and the G20. Fintech engendered new uncertainties. The impact of Brexit was uncertain, but mostly expected to be negative, at least in the short-term. Furthermore, there was growing competition from Asian and other financial centres. Nevertheless, London remained pre-eminent as one of the two largest global concentrations of wholesale financial services activity and at the top of the Global Financial Centres Index.
