Abstract:
The people of Lombok have recognized the term of Kerbung prior than Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School). Kerbung was the Islamic boarding school (hereafter pesantren) of Lombok’s Society. However, both Kerbung and Pesantren are Islamic educational institutions rooted in the history and culture of Indonesia. The track record of the emergence of Pesantren in Lombok was associated with the revival of Islam in the late 19th century. It was marked by the growth of recitation centers, as can be found in Pagutan, Kediri, Batubangka Sakra, Praya, Sesela, Sekarbela and Tanjung (East Lombok). Besides, more than 2000 intellectual works of Lombok's Muslims were also found at that time. Some of these manuscripts were used as references by the tuan guru for their students. This research is field research with a qualitative paradigm. This study found that the track record of the emergence of pesantren in Lombok was an integration of the Islamic educational system in Lombok, Java and the Middle East. However, the emergence of pesantren in Lombok was inseparable from the founding fathers of the pesantren itself.

Abstract:
This article is triggered by the emergence of ethnicity aspects in Indonesian literature. The importance of ethnicity in Indonesian literature is because Indonesian literature is assumed to be plural, not singular. That is, the reality of Indonesia in Indonesian literature is not limited to one ethnicity, but various ethnicities. In the perspective of modern Indonesian literature, Indonesian novels are synonymous with Malay, Jakarta, Java and several other cities that have contributed to the development of Indonesian literature. In the perspective of ethnic Indonesian literature, Indonesian novels are identical with ethnicities whose existence is ignored in modern Indonesian literature. In this context, ethnic Indonesian literature is important to explore. This article explores the interesting representation of Lombok in Ethnic Indonesian literature. Lombok serves an ethnic that needs to be analyzed in Indonesian literature, because Lombok is assumed to be part of Java (Marrison, 1999; Meij 2011) and Lombok is hegemonyed in Java (Satrya, 2018). The problem is whether Indonesian literature still represents Lombok as shown by Marrison, Meij, and Satrya in the study of philology and literature. The Indonesian novel of Lombok delineating the issue of Java in interpreting Lombok is the novel Kenari Mentaram (2013) by Salman Faris. This article applies Stuart Halls representation theory and model. Based on that theory, the novel Kenari Mentaram is assumed to be a production of meaning regarding Lombok. The analytical method uses the semiotic analysis method and the Stuart Hall discourse model. Lombok is interpreted in the novel Kenari Mentaram in the context of internationalization. In this context, Lombok's art is the only commodity that can be sold. The art of Lombok represented is the art of Lombok which is capable of competing internationally by taking a model from Java. Thus, the internationalization of Lombok can only be done by taking the Javanese Model. In the internationalization context, the discourse of Lombok art discussed is the multicultural art of Lombok. The Kenari Mentaram novel delineates as part of the discourse of the nationalization of Lombok in the context of Indonesian literature and the internationalization of Lombok in the context of tourism.

Abstract:
This article discusses the meaning of love in Lombok Indonesian literature. The meaning of love is discussed in the context of romanticism. This article tries to answer what is the meaning of love if it tends to the poles of the ideal world or to the poles of the real world. This article describes the conceptualization of love in Lombok Indonesian literature. To explain this problem, this article uses representation theory with semiotic analysis method. The theory assumes that literary works are a representation of reality, not a presentation of reality. Literary work as a sign which is the unity between a signifier and signified, both at the level of language and myth. This article shows that the tendency of love to the poles of ideal world, interprets love as loyalty and responsibility. While the tendency of love to the poles of the real world, interpreting love as liberating feeling. The tendency of the meaning of love, which reject both poles, constructs the meaning of love as a blessing for other, not as suffering for other. The tendency to unite the poles, the ideal and the real, constructs love as of act of elopement, merarik.

Abstract:
The tourism industry is one of the pillars of Indonesian economics. One of the fastest growing tourism destinations in Indonesia is Lombok. Descriptive analysis and a one-sample t-test were used to analyze the data. This study found that there are statistical differences of brand awareness, brand image, perceived quality of, and loyalty to, Lombok as a tourism destination, thus the respondents’ visit to Lombok influenced their awareness, image perception, perceived quality of, and loyalty to, Lombok. Meanwhile, mean value differences among variables addressed different insights from each dimension of Lombok brand equity. Despite of its small number of respondents, this study provides the insight of a preliminary project for branding Lombok.

Abstract:
This article demonstrates how an integral element of the fabric of governance on the eastern Indonesian island of Lombok, and many other parts of the Indonesian archipelago, are non-state local security arrangements, such as night watches and militias. These groups play a significant role in the local infrastructure of security and law enforcement. Consequently, this article challenges a common assumption by legal scholars, and many other observers of Indonesia, that state-based institutions such as the police are the exclusive, and only legitimate, mode of law enforcement in Indonesia. Through an ethnographic engagement with the idea of law enforcement on Lombok, I seek to broaden these assumptions about legitimate modes of statecraft. These non-state entities fill a void in the Indonesian law enforcement architecture that the state is unable or unwilling to fulfil (or potentially finds it more practical to delegate to local non-state institutions).

Abstract:
This article discusses the challenges of teaching and sustaining music and other performing arts on the island of Lombok in Indonesia. It follows my field research trajectory on the island over a period of 34 years and analyzes the efforts of government interventions, non-government actors, and teachers and educational institutions in the transmission and sustainability of the arts. Interpretations indicate that a combination of globalization, urbanization, social media, everyday mediatization, and Islamization over recent decades negatively impacted traditional musics in specific ways, by problematizing sustainability. However, several agents–individuals inside and outside the government who understood the situation and had the foresight to take appropriate action–developed programs and organizations to maintain or aestheticize the performing arts, sustain musician livelihoods, and engage a new generation of male youth in music and dance. These efforts, supplemented by the formation of groups of leaders dedicated to the study of early culture on Lombok and fresh initiatives in music education, have ushered in new opportunities and visibility for traditional music and performing arts and performing artists.

Abstract:

Malaria is endemic to Lombok Island, Indonesia. One approach to suppress malaria spread is to eliminate anopheline larvae in their habitat and the environmentally safe agent is bacteria, that is,Bacillus sphaericus. However, there is no information regarding local isolate ofB. sphaericusthat is toxic to mosquito larvae from Lombok. The aims of the study were to isolateB. sphaericusfrom soil in areas close to beach surrounding Lombok Island and to test their toxicity against 3rd instarAnopheles aconituslarvae. Soil samples were collected from 20 different sampling locations from Lombok Island and homogenized with sterile physiological salt solution. Suspension was heat-shocked at 80°C for 30 minutes and then spread onto antibiotic-supplemented NYSM solid medium. Colonies grown were characterized and subjected to initial toxicity test against anopheline larvae. Isolates with more than 50% killing percentage were subjected to bioassay testing against anopheline larvae. From 20 locations, 1 isolate showed mild toxicity (namely, isolate MNT) and 2 isolates showed high toxicity (namely, isolates SLG and TJL2) againstAn. aconitus. Those 3 isolates were potentially useful isolates, as they killed almost all larvae in 24 hours. The discovery of toxic indigenous isolates ofB. sphaericusfrom Lombok Island opens opportunity to develop a biopesticide from local resources.

This paper explores the role of Salafi formal schools in the increasing influence and proliferation of Salafism in Lombok, East Indonesia, alongside the impacts of this process on educational culture and broader social contexts. Despite intense resistance from, and even violence by, traditionalist mainstream groups, the Salafi movement has developed steadily. This paper argues that the growth of Salafism in Lombok is influenced by contextualizing of proliferation strategies by integrating into Indonesian national education system and selecting of the greater Islamic traditions, rather than ideological and financial support from the Middle East, as it has been highlighted in previous studies and literature. By establishing officially certified schools and formal recognitions from the Indonesian government, the Salafi schools have found a way to successfully recruit a new young generation of Muslims in Lombok and beyond.

Abstract Watershed of Dodokan in Lombok, Indonesia, is one of the strategic watersheds on the island of Lombok, and is a priority for rehabilitation of forest and land. This paper aims to analyse ecological water conditions in Dodokan watershed, Lombok, Indonesia, and recommends policy for improving the ecological conditions of the watershed. The results of this analysis are expected to be useful in implementing policies and programs to improve the ecological condition of this watershed, as well as to provide greater benefits for the communities around or related to this watershed. The watershed analysis focuses on five aspects, including flow regime coefficient, annual flow coefficient, sediment load, flood, and water use index. The results of the analysis show that the ecological condition of water management in the Dodokan watershed is poor, and can threaten the continuity of water resources in the Dodokan watershed. Therefore, rehabilitation activities are urgently needed.

Full text
Abstract:
SUMMARY The Flores thrust forms the west segment (∼450 km) of a very active, ∼E–W striking, ∼800-km-long backarc thrust along the east Sunda Arc. In 2018, a deadly earthquake sequence composed of ~110 M4+ events rattled the Indonesian island of Lombok near the Flores thrust and caused tremendous damage on the island, however what is the nature of rupturing during this earthquake sequence remains unknown. Here, using a total of 2120 km of high-resolution seismic profiles covering ∼300 km of the Flores thrust off Bali, Lombok and Sumbawa, in addition to earthquake data and InSAR measurements, we investigated the active thrusting during this earthquake sequence. Our seismic interpretation and structural mapping show that offshore north of Lombok and Bali, the remarkable Flores thrust is essentially blind, deforming the seabed by folds, not faults. The Lombok earthquakes were all shallow thrust events with depth <40 km and occurred within ∼35 km north of the Rinjani volcano beneath the Lombok Island and its northern extremity. The InSAR measurements suggested that the most of the crustal deformation caused by these earthquakes occurred the north the and northeast of the island. The maximum vertical deformation was ∼36 cm near the northwest margin of the island, caused by the 5th August Mw 6.9 event. These observations combined with the presence of blind thrusts off Lombok suggest that the offshore portion of Flores thrust did not rupture during the 2018 Lombok earthquake sequence; the most coseismic slip must have occurred along a deep-rooted, north-verging basal fault and a range of imbricate thrusts beneath the north of the island, not along the buried thrusts offshore. Despite being blind off Lombok and Bali, the Flores thrust can still pose tsunami threats to the adjacent population centres by rupturing the seafloor during future large earthquakes (M > 7) that occur directly on the offshore blind thrusts, not beneath the island like the Lombok sequence. The proximity of the Rinjani volcano and thrust earthquakes suggests a possible role of volcanic activity (e.g. magmatic fluids and gas migration, stress change induced by pressurized magma chamber) in inducing the Lombok earthquakes.

Abstract:
Indonesia’s democratic reform and decentralization after the fall of authoritarian President Soeharto has brought both painful transformations and the potential of new beginnings. This is also the case for the island of Lombok where political changes have affected not only obvious political players, but also local Muslim religious leaders (Tuan Guru). These religious leaders wield a high level of socio-political and religious authority. Their significant social standing is largely due to the central role of Islam across Lombok which not only relates to people’s spiritual lives, but is also identified in long established local forms of governance that are focused upon Tuan Guru and their organizations. This article will seek to understand how to delineate their religious authority and conceptualize its application in these fast changing circumstances. In doing so I argue that the complex and unstable times that have occurred alongside the transition to democracy are transforming the potent authority of Tuan Guru.

The research set out to analyze coastal typology characteristics and ecotourism development through geomorphosite assessments and suggest fitting management strategies in East Lombok, Indonesia. In this research, the connection between ecotourism potentials and coastal typologies was investigated. The methods of this research were conducted using a combination of GIS-based analysis and field surveys. Geomorphosites were assessed from several facets or attributes: scientific and intrinsic, educational, economic, conservation, and added values. The analysis results showed that two coastal geomorphosites could be developed into ecotourism spots, as supported by East Lombok’s regional planning to promote ecotourism in its tourism branding. In addition, the sites are suggested to develop local products as a part of their attractiveness. Another finding is that the coastal typology has a strong connection to the scoring result, especially the scientific-intrinsic and conservation values.

This report describes the development of a pilot agroforestry program for the island of Lombok, Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB), Indonesia. The primary aim of the program is to increase agricultural production on Lombok by introducing drought-tolerant, productive trees that can ameliorate drought-induced famine experienced by rural farmers in this region. The inclusion of an agroforestry subsystem with supportive and “back-up” capabilities will buttress the existing agricultural system in the event of future drought. The current focus is upon the introduction of hybrid coconut, date, fig, and macadamia nut trees. Major emphasis is placed upon the value of working within the Indonesian culture and agrarian social structure in NTB.

Abstract:
Abstract. The tsunami hazard posed by the Flores back-arc thrust, which runs along the northern coast of the islands of Bali and Lombok, Indonesia, is poorly studied compared to the Sunda Megathrust, situated ∼250 km to the south of the islands. However, the 2018 Lombok earthquake sequence demonstrated the seismic potential of the western Flores Thrust when a fault ramp beneath the island of Lombok ruptured in two Mw 6.9 earthquakes. Although the uplift in these events mostly occurred below land, the sequence still generated local tsunamis along the northern coast of Lombok. Historical records show that the Flores fault system in the Lombok and Bali region has generated at least six ≥Ms 6.5 tsunamigenic earthquakes since 1800 CE. Hence, it is important to assess the possible tsunami hazard represented by this fault system. Here, we focus on the submarine fault segment located between the islands of Lombok and Bali (below the Lombok Strait). We assess modeled tsunami patterns generated by fault slip in six earthquake scenarios (slip of 1–5 m, representing Mw 7.2–7.9+) using deterministic modeling, with a focus on impacts on the capital cities of Mataram, Lombok, and Denpasar, Bali, which lie on the coasts facing the strait. We use a geologically constrained earthquake model informed by the Lombok earthquake sequence, together with a high-resolution bathymetry dataset developed by combining direct measurements from the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO) with sounding measurements from the official nautical charts for Indonesia. Our results show that fault rupture in this region could trigger a tsunami reaching Mataram in <9 min and Denpasar in ∼ 23–27 min, with multiple waves. For an earthquake with 3–5 m of coseismic slip, Mataram and Denpasar experience maximum wave heights of ∼ 1.6–2.7 and ∼ 0.6–1.4 m, respectively. Furthermore, our earthquake models indicate that both cities would experience coseismic subsidence of 20–40 cm, exacerbating their exposure to both the tsunami and other coastal hazards. Overall, Mataram is more exposed than Denpasar to high tsunami waves arriving quickly from the fault source. To understand how a tsunami would affect Mataram, we model the associated inundation using the 5 m slip model and show that Mataram is inundated ∼ 55–140 m inland along the northern coast and ∼230 m along the southern coast, with maximum flow depths of ∼ 2–3 m. Our study highlights that the early tsunami arrival in Mataram, Lombok, gives little time for residents to evacuate. Raising their awareness about the potential for locally generated tsunamis and the need for evacuation plans is important to help them respond immediately after experiencing strong ground shaking.

Abstract This article examines the informal authority wielded by civilian security groups (pamswakarsa) on the island of Lombok. Taking as its point of departure the Balinese minority’s plan to build a large Hindu temple in northern Lombok, the article shows how the project was thwarted by a combination of rumours, pamphlets, violence as well as legal obstacles from district and provincial authorities. Outlining how the campaign against the temple gained momentum, I suggest that rumours and documents issued by a security force claiming to represent the island’s Muslim majority played an important role in preventing the realization of the temple. Discussing the ‘conviviality’ between non-state security groups and state officials in post-Suharto Lombok, I argue that civilian security groups exercise a form of vigilante citizenship.

Background and Aim: Cryptosporidium parvum and Hymenolepis nana are intestinal parasites that are commonly found in the unclean environment. Their presence in rats promotes the transmission of the cryptosporidiosis and hymenolepiasis to humans or animals nearby. This study aimed to determine the molecular characteristics of C. parvum and H. nana and their distribution in rats on Lombok Island. Materials and Methods: C. parvum and H. nana were investigated in 50 rats from Lombok Island. The molecular-parasitological technique used was polymerase chain reaction and sequencing method. Results: From 50 samples of rats' stool from 10 locations on Lombok Island, 8% (4/50) of C. parvum was detected molecularly with an 18S rRNA gene and 2% (1/50) of H. nana with COX 1 gene. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that C. parvum carrying rats on Lombok Island have a genetic relationship with C. parvum with Obi7 isolates, Japan and H. nana has a genetic relationship with Rodentolepis nana identified with Hn-VT isolates, India. Conclusion: The highest incidence of parasites was found in rats that were caught in the urban areas of Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Immediately, public health programs in these types of contaminated areas should receive priority attention to prevent further transmission of the parasites from animals to human beings.

Abstract:
Integrated approaches to natural resource management are often undermined by fundamental governance weaknesses. We studied governance of a forest landscape in East Lombok, Indonesia. Forest Management Units (Kesatuan Pengelolaan Hutan or KPH) are an institutional mechanism used in Indonesia for coordinating the management of competing sectors in forest landscapes, balancing the interests of government, business, and civil society. Previous reviews of KPHs indicate they are not delivering their potential benefits due to an uncertain legal mandate and inadequate resources. We utilized participatory methods with a broad range of stakeholders in East Lombok to examine how KPHs might improve institutional arrangements to better meet forest landscape goals. We find that KPHs are primarily limited by insufficient integration with other actors in the landscape. Thus, strengthened engagement with other institutions, as well as civil society, is required. Although new governance arrangements that allow for institutional collaboration and community engagement are needed in the long term, there are steps that the East Lombok KPH can take now. Coordinating institutional commitments and engaging civil society to reconcile power asymmetries and build consensus can help promote sustainable outcomes. Our study concludes that improved multi-level, polycentric governance arrangements between government, NGOs, the private sector, and civil society are required to achieve sustainable landscapes in Lombok. The lessons from Lombok can inform forest landscape governance improvements throughout Indonesia and the tropics.

Abstract:
This article discusses the discourse of Lombok tourism in Paox Iben's novel Medulla Sinculasis. In Lombok, discourse on tourism was initiated by Tuan Guru Bajang, a religious scholar, after he was elected the governor of West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, in 2008. Within this context, the novel Medulla Sinculasis is discussed. The novel constructs an understanding of Lombok as a tourism destination, beginning with Europe. In this story, Nuruda is driven to visit Lombok after seeing a painting titled Medulla Sinculasis being auctioned at the Van Gogh Museum in the Netherlands. After returning to Indonesia from Europe, Nuruda decides to travel directly to Lombok and meet Husin Nanang, the painter. His meeting with Husin Nanang, as well as the situation in Ampenan City, leads Nuruda on a transformation from tourist to social activist, fighting to protect the rights and promote the interests of marginal groups. Nuruda's struggle is ultimately unsuccessful, and he is killed in a hit-and-run. The Lombok in this novel is part of the discourse from the 2000s and 2010s, a period that was dominated by the economisation of Lombok. The novel Medulla Sinculasis may be seen part of this dominant discourse, and thus having the economisation of Lombok as part of its agenda.

In the process of Islamizing the people of Lombok. There are many theories about the entry of Islam in Lombok through commercial channels. As one of the nations with marine wealth, before Islam entered the nation, Indonesia was known as sailors. So, in the process of entering Islam, of course it cannot be separated from marine activities and commerce. This article focuses on commercial activities as the beginning of the entry of Islam in Lombok. By using critical historical and phenomenological approaches from various historical literatures. Based on commerce in observing the process of Islamization and showing the argument that the da’wah process was preceded by economic struggle. This article strengthens the general theory that Islam was brought in by Muslim traders. Also, this article shows that Islam entered by seizing the economic base of the Indonesian people, namely agricultural and maritime commodities. This means that the beginning of Islam did not directly preach religion, but was involved in the economic activities of the people of the archipelago, then Islam was preached. This article is qualitative-descriptive, with local historical databases such as Babad Lombok and Negarakartagama. Abstract:
Banana prawn, Fenneropenaeus merguiensis, is one of several prospective local crustaceans for shrimp culture. The objective of this study was to reveal the genetic differences among banana prawn populations from Sunda strait, Cilacap coast, Bengkulu coast, Lombok strait, and Pontianak coast. Principle Component Analysis (PCA) was used to determine genetic differences among the five wild populations. Results of the PCA analysis show that there are morphometrically genetic variations among studied banana prawn populations. Banana prawn from Pontianak has the highest variation of morphology. Results of cluster analysis indicate that there are two main clusters where banana prawns from Pontianak, Lombok Strait, and Bengkulu are categorized as the first cluster while Sunda Strait and Cilacap populations are categorized as the second cluster. The highest value of genetic distance is shown by banana prawn populations from Cilacap and Lombok and the lowest value is Cilacap-Sunda Strait.

Abstract:
AbstractInternational Law, specifically UNCLOS 1982, MARPOL 73/78, and SOLAS 1974 give mandates to every State to carry out protection and prevention of marine pollution. As one form of protection and prevention pollution is establishing a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA). Since 2016, the Indonesian Government has submitted a proposal to designate the Lombok Strait as one of the PSSA. This study aims to analyze and provide an understanding of the prospects for the establishment of PSSA in the Lombok Strait including the Gili Islands and Nusa Penida Island after the approval of the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) in 2019 based on International Law.This study uses a juridical-normative approach with descriptive analytical research to describe and analyze the international legal instruments used. The research data were obtained from the results of library research and interviews with related institutions such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia. Data processing conducted by qualitative analysis methods. This study concludes that the specific PSSA arrangements are governed by the IMO Resolution A.982 (24) related to the PSSA Guidelines as PSSA is not explicitly regulated in UNCLOS 1982. The Lombok Strait is highly prospective to be established as a PSSA as the Lombok Strait has fulfilled the criteria of the IMO accompanied by the mandate of protection and prevention of the marine environment from UNCLOS 1982, MARPOL 73/78 and SOLAS 1974.In 2019, the designation of TSS in Lombok Strait was approved so that discussions related to PSSA can continue. However, The PSSA discussed at the IMO session requires the approval of other countries that enjoy the rights of passage through the Lombok Strait. Accordingly, the attribute section of the PSSA determination proposal in the Lombok Strait needs to be improved to convince that the Lombok Strait does have the urgency to be established as a PSSA.Keywords: Particularly Sensitive Sea Area, Lombok Strait, International Maritime Organization AbstrakHukum Internasional, khususnya UNCLOS 1982, MARPOL 73/78, dan SOLAS 1974 memberikan mandate kepada setiap negara untuk melakukan perlindungan dan pencegahan pencemaran di laut.
