Abstract:

Abstract:
Kata Kunci:Riba, Profit and Loss Sharing, Mudlârabah, Murâbahah, Artificial Aspects of Islam Abstract:Based on the study of the history of emergence and operation of Islamic Bank and its system performance, the author conclude that the concept of Islamic bank is essentially a form of Islamization of the banking institutions. Such Islamization are limited to the marginal, artificial, and formal-institutional aspects, such as the replacement of technical terms in the banking world with a term derived from the fiqh al-mu’âmalah, the abolition of interest, and the rejection of unlawful business practices. Moreover, the Islamic bank is no different from conventional banks. The impact of such less substantial and comprehensive islamization is the perception that Islamic bank is precisely 'shackled' by the concepts underlying classical fiqh, where it tends to be counter-productive with modern business trends which are constantly demanding efficiency and flexibility. In order to remain able to survive in the future, Islamic banks need to evaluate itself continuously by always open to criticism addressed to them. The conception of Islamic banking oriented too much to the doctrine must be balanced with an awareness of the facts and the demands of modern business, both local and global scale. While the ideals of the Islamic ideal, such as the eradication of poverty, equitable distribution of wealth and job creation, should remain the main orientation.

Abstract:
This study aims to explain the clearing mechanism at Bank Indonesia Lhokseumawe City, to determine the constraints that occur in the clearing mechanism. This research is a field study or also called the type of field research, which is obtaining data from research objects by collecting data extracted from field data sources, namely from informants. The conclusions that the authors conclude in this study are as follows: 1. The clearing mechanism is carried out with several mechanisms, first, the company (the bank) sends payment data to the sending bank, second, the sending bank sends the transaction to the SKNBI the receiving bank receives transaction data and funds from the settlement, then third, the receiving bank verifies the name and account number of the customer recipient, if it is not appropriate, the director must be in bulk format, fourth, the recipient bank will forward the transaction to the customer's account The obstacle faced by BI in the clearing mechanism is the existence of network disruptions during the clearing process, so that Bank Indonesia needs to conduct bilateral transactions or clearing processes between banks using the RTGS system. Network disruption can occur nationally or locally experienced by each region or office, especially the Bank in Lhokseumawe City. Keyword: Clearing Mechanism, Bank Indonesia.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The 1990s saw significant increases in commercial bank membership in the Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) System and extensive growths in FHLB assets and outstanding advances. Since FHLB policies may enable risk-taking behavior by the System's member institutions, this research evaluates the impact of the FHLBs on community bank members, local consumers, and local markets. Results suggest that commercial bank liquidity is enhanced by and managed with the use of System advances, and investments in loans and mortgage-related assets increase with FHLB participation, particularly by small bank members. Credit quality and bank financial conditions improve after participating in the FHLB program, and cost savings from borrowing System funds may contribute to higher rates paid on deposits in local markets. However, banks with greater exposure to interest rate risk are more likely to become FHLB members, and interest rate risk exposure further increases after membership attainment, as the amount of advances borrowed increases, and the longer members remain in the FHLB program. Long-term advances have not been used to lengthen liability duration to offset growth in long-term asset investments, which makes the FHLB System more highly susceptible to rising rates.

Ab, Wahab Norailis. "Dimensions of service quality and service climate : a study of bank customers and employees in four local Malaysian banks." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/1297.

Full text
Abstract:
In spite of the rapid growth and internalization of banking services in particular, managers first need to correctly identify the antecedents of what the local consumer perceives as service quality and its link to service climate, thus the strengths of this relationship would be beneficial as a global competitive tool. Although significant studies had been done regarding issues and factors contributing to service quality and service climate in the banking industry, very little has been published regarding the connection between perceptions of these dimensions. The purpose of this study is to describe an accomplished research to determine whether Malaysian local bank customers’ perceptions of service quality and its dimensions relate to employees’ perceptions of service climate and its dimensions; and to ascertain whether various background elements’ reported differences influence the relationships between the dimensions of service quality and service climate. This study encapsulated two phases of survey with open-ended and close-ended questionnaires consecutively. The researcher employed the Profile Accumulation Technique in the first phase and from the respondents’ results, close-ended questionnaires were constructed with responses from four local banks in Malaysia, corroborated together with previous scholars’ findings. Several analyses were carried out such as demographic, reliability, validity, performance, non-parametric and parametric tests and elaboration analysis. The main findings produced nine dimensions of service quality (Automated Teller Machine; corporate image; customer interaction and customer service; online and phone banking; physical feature and facilities; products and services; rates and charges; management and staff) and eleven dimensions of service climate (benefit, bonus, reward and salary; corporate image; customer service; facilities; organization; department and branch; management; organization output; products and services; workforce; myself). There were significant relationships between service quality and service climate dimensions. Respondents’ characteristics influenced the strength of the relationships between dimensions, service quality and service climate. Consequently, the results offered significant implications for participating banks to improve quality in their environment concerning their employees and customers; using customer-oriented processes and training programs within an increasingly diverse marketplace. Economic development, the political situation, socio-cultural system and the level of sector maturity do need to be considered by managers and policy makers so as to investigate their influence on service quality and service climate.

Abstract:
This thesis contains both macro- and microeconomic analyses of banking organisational structure, Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) lending and local economic development. The first examination is based on a bank-level analysis to investigate the impact of bank size on bank propensity to small and micro business lending. Secondly, I review the regional banking-growth literature and highlight the need for original investigations of the effects of local small business lending, as a measure of local banking development, on local economic development, emphasising the importance of distributional heterogeneity and spatial effects across regions within a one-country framework. Thirdly, I empirically investigate whether small and micro business lending, provided by small local banks, has an impact on the performance of local economies, taking into consideration the distributional heterogeneity among regions. Finally, I examine whether spatial spillover effects of local banks on local economies are significant. Using an econometric approach and data on over 14,000 U.S banks of all sizes, from 1994 to 2013, the results indicate an inverse relationship between bank size and the propensity of banks to lend to small and micro businesses. The relationship is robust and survives a number of rigorous specification checks. The subsequent review of the literature of regional banking-growth studies reveals that previously employed econometric methodologies do not account for distributional heterogeneity and spatial spillover effects in the examination of the regional banking-growth relationship. I also offer the small business lending channel as a proxy measure for local banking development. Furthermore, the subsequent analyses of the local banking-growth nexus indicate a boosting impact of local banks on the local economies through the small business lending channel. Besides, such impact varies in accordance to the regions’ level of economic development and the magnitude of the spillovers of SME loans from one region to another. Important policy implications can be drawn from my empirical findings. The inverse association of bank size with propensity to small business lending indicates that small banks are superior in SME lending through their form of relationship lending. Accordingly, small banks can be the optimal financial machinery to facilitate credit to and support the growth of SMEs. Moreover, the results emphasise the importance of small locally-operating banks to development of the local economies through small business lending, as well as confirm the existence of heterogeneous effects and significant spatial spillover effects of small local banks on the growth of the regions. The policy implication is that policy-makers need to ensure that localisation effects are sustained, because of the comparatively minimal cost required to minimize individual (in relation to aggregate) uncertainties and local stability can be relied upon to achieve global stability. Both can be done by supporting the creation and continued viability of small local banks. For this, a positive yield curve is required – which currently central banks in many countries are not delivering.

Abstract:

In this thesis, I apply a case study method to examine the processes of knowledge management both within the neighborhood, and in institutional partnerships, by Banco Palmas, Brazil's first community development bank, as a way of uncovering a key component to understanding community-driven social innovations. Founded in 1998, in an urban peripheral neighborhood in Fortaleza, Brazil, the bank is best known for an unusual combination of microfinance integrated with local social currency. An increasing emphasis on community-driven approaches has become part of the practice of development in sectors ranging from economic development, disaster relief, to refugee assistance, yet what to make of the self-organized practices originating from the poor, as a concept, model or theory, is far from clear. First, I outline a "follow the knowledge" research design combining a working conceptual framework of knowledge, multi-source data collection, including semistructured interviews and extensive participant observation, and other fieldwork activities. The resulting 22 formal interviews from 13 institutions and additional case study data were interpreted with mutual corroboration and thick contextualization relying on relevant literature. The findings from within the neighborhood showed that the most effective function related to knowledge had to do with maintaining a community of practice of local social entrepreneurs, which the bank expertly did by combining what I identify as three practices and two processes of local knowledge management. Moreover, the bank's local knowledge directly built on the community's long history of mobilization, and the accumulation of experience-based knowledge was such that the organization could be seen as serving in the role of local knowledge bank for the neighborhood. In institutional partnerships, Banco Palmas provided local knowledge to key partners and allies in academic, civil society and government branches, while responding to a number of institutional constraints in contemporary Brazil, charting a unique path from the grassroots to influencing national policies. In conclusion, I draw lessons on replicating local knowledge bank, suggest strategic and tactical recommendations for Banco Palmas, and reflect on my personal learning experience.

Abstract:
AbstractIn 1984 the World Bank placed social analysis formally into the rulebook. For the first time amongst multilateral development banks, the Bank’s rulebook integrated social analysis into a key operational checkpoint before project approval. This chapter examines the way which social analysis pioneers in the World Bank and Asian Development Bank took complementary paths to make new subjects visible, engage them in planning projects, and to codify these approaches in social “rules”. They envisaged continued cooperation among social development specialists, reaching beyond institutional and country borders; and encompassing local partners. In examining these pioneering roles in social analysis the chapter explores the longstanding challenge of addressing the critical relationship of social equity to economic growth in a lending environment.

Abstract:
Purpose – we investigate models of social media activity of small local banks (SLBs) in Poland and the consequences of their adoption for SLBs’ growth. Research methodology – with the use of k-medoid clustering, we differentiate between types of SLBs’ social media activity. Then, after controlling for bank specificity and local environment, we employ these activity types in regression models explaining a bank’s popularity in social media and bank growth. Findings – although SLBs draw attention if they concentrate their social media activity on local affairs, conversion of such popularity into a bank growth is difficult to achieve. Research limitations – a relatively limited number of SLBs (111 entities) adopted an active social media policy. As a result, we have to look for social media activity models instead of describing the activity directly with numerous variables employed simultaneously in regressions. Practical implications – in order to reach the highest recognition in social media, a small bank should widely discuss local affairs. Nevertheless, SLBs’ managers should carefully enter the social media world as even suitably selected social media strategy does not automatically lead to economic outcomes. Originality/Value – first, we extend the scarce evidence on social media adoption by financial companies. Second, we clearly define different types of social media activity of local firms. Third, we differentiate between the attention drawn through social media activity and its economic repercussions.

In ASME Turbo Expo 2014: Turbine Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2014-25522.

Full text
Abstract:
The trailing edge sections of gas turbine vanes and blades are generally subjected to extremely high heat loads due to the combined effects of high external accelerating Mach numbers and gas temperatures. In order to maintain the metal temperatures of these trailing edges to a level, which fulfills the mechanical integrity of the parts, highly efficient cooling of the trailing edges is required without increasing the coolant consumption, as the latter has a detrimental effect on the overall gas turbine performance. In this paper the characteristics of the heat transfer and pressure drop of two novel integrated pin bank configurations were investigated. These include a pin bank with conical pins and a pin bank consisting of cylindrical pins and intersecting broken turbulators. As baseline case, a pin bank with cylindrical pins was studied as well. All investigations were done in a converging channel in order to be consistent with the real part. The heat transfer and pressure drop of all the pin banks were investigated initially with the use of numerical predictions and subsequently in a scaled experimental wind tunnel. The experimental study was conducted for a range of operational Reynolds numbers. The TLC (thermochromic liquid crystal) method was used to measure the detailed heat transfer coefficients in scaled Perspex models representing the various pin bank configurations. Pressure taps were located at several positions within the test sections. Both local and average heat transfer coefficients and pressure loss coefficients were determined. The measured and predicted results showed that the local internal heat transfer coefficient increases in the flow direction. This was due to the flow acceleration in the converging channel. Furthermore, both the broken ribs and the conical pin banks resulted in higher heat transfer coefficients compared with the baseline cylindrical pins. The conical pins produced the highest average internal heat transfer coefficients in contrast to the pins with the broken ribs, though this was also associated with a higher pressure drop.

Full text
Abstract:
We study how capital controls and domestic macroprudential policy tame credit supply booms, respectively targeting foreign and domestic bank debt. For identification, we exploit the simultaneous introduction of capital controls on foreign exchange (FX) debt inflows and an increase of reserve requirements on domestic bank deposits in Colombia during a strong credit boom, as well as credit registry and bank balance sheet data. Our results suggest that first, an increase in the local monetary policy rate, raising the interest rate spread with the United States, allows more FX-indebted banks to carry trade cheap FX funds with more expensive peso lending, especially toward riskier, opaque firms. Capital controls tax FX debt and break the carry trade. Second, the increase in reserve requirements on domestic deposits directly reduces credit supply, and more so for riskier, opaque firms, rather than enhances the transmission of monetary rates on credit supply. Importantly, different banks finance credit in the boom with either domestic or foreign (FX) financing. Hence, capital controls and domestic macroprudential policy complementarily mitigate the boom and the associated risk-taking through two distinct channels

This report explores approaches to participation in humanitarian response and evidence on the contributions of community engagement in effective response and recovery efforts. It begins with a brief overview of decolonial perspectives on the Covid-19 pandemic to situate participation in the wider context and history of humanitarian and development theory and practice. This is followed by a brief summary of evidence on the role of participation in humanitarian activities andsituates the now ubiquitous concept of ‘Building Back Better’ (BBB) inthe discussion of participatory crisis response and recovery. The remaining sections of the report introduce participatory approaches that have been applied through the Covid-19 pandemic: decentralised decision-making, technological adaptations to engage local communities, and Southern-led research and participatory research methods.

Abstract:
We develop a small open economy model with nominal rigidities and fragmented labor markets to study the response of the monetary policy to a migration shock. Migrants are characterized by their productivity levels, their restrictions to accumulate capital, as well as by the flexibility of their labor income. Our results show that the monetary policy response depends on the characteristics of migrants and the local labor market. An inflow of low(high)-productivity workers reduces(increases) marginal costs, lowers(raises) inflation expectations and pushes the Central Bank to reduce(increase) the interest rate. The model is calibrated to the Colombian economy and used to analyze a migratory inflow of financially constraint workers from Venezuela into a sector with flexible and low wages.

Abstract:
This paper presents the results of two mobile phone surveys conducted by the Asian Development Bank among farmers in Punjab and Sindh provinces in Pakistan in mid-2020 during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The surveys collected information about how COVID-19-related measures and economic and transport disruptions affected farmers’ harvests, marketing efforts, input prices, and financial needs. The surveys found that the COVID-19 pandemic had significant negative impacts on farm households in both provinces. The paper provides additional context on COVID-19-related effects on local and regional economies and food supply chains. It also covers a simultaneous locust invasion along the India–Pakistan border, which has created “crisis within a crisis” in the surveyed provinces and exacerbated conditions that could lead to famine, disease, and increased poverty.

Abstract:
For more than a year, the Caribbean economics team at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has focused on the potential implications of the COVID-19 pandemic for lives and livelihoods across the region. The pandemic is still with us, but there is hope that the cycles of lockdowns and containment measures will eventually come to an end as vaccination programs progress, even if unevenly, across the region. However, the availability of vaccine supply remains a concern, and the pandemic continues to pose a constraint for the recovery of key sectors such as tourism and local services sectors. This edition of the Caribbean Quarterly Bulletin focuses on two topics: (1) forecasts of key macroeconomic variables, based on the April 2021 WEO, and (2) financial sector risks. In general, regional economies are embarking on a fragile path to recovery. Continued progress with vaccination programs, credible medium-term fiscal programs, and continued attention to financial vulnerabilities will be needed to push that path to recovery forward.
