Abstract:
AbstractThe article focuses on the issue of patterns of religious engagement among Indian Hindus during last decade. It tries to look at both the issue of private religion practiced in the form of offering puja at home and public religion seen in terms of participation in Katha, Satsang, Bhajan-Kirtan etc. by Indian Hindus. Sizeable numbers of Indian Hindus offer puja every day; sizeable numbers of them are also engaged in public religious activities. This is more prevalent among the urban, educated, upper-caste, upper-class Hindus compared to their counterpart. Along with factors, which influence religious practices, is gender. Hindu women are more religious compared to the Hindu men. Similarly, upper-caste Hindus practice religious activities more regularly compared to other Hindus. There is hardly any change in patterns of engagement in religious activities among Hindus over the last five years. The levels of engagement in religious activities also have an impact on voting behavior. The higher the engagement in religious activities, the greater is the support for the BJP and vice versa. Between the 2004 and 2009 Lok Sabha elections, there had been a decline in the vote share of BJP due to its declining popularity amongst all the Hindu voters, but the decline in the support for the BJP is much sharper amongst highly religious Hindus compared to those who are not so religious. Along with other factors, this may be one of the important factors that led to the defeat of BJP in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. The article draws evidence from the National Election Study 2004 and 2009 conducted by the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies during these two elections.

Abstract:
Man is a unique structure of the world, the structure that we see today has been continuously evolving. The structures that we see in the universe is made up of some elements, same elements could be seen in the human body structure. Everything that is in the universe is also present in the human body. Charak Samhita named this principle as Lok Purusha Samya. When there are changes in the external environment, then the environment automatically tries to return to its previous state, similarly in the human body too, when there are changes in its internal environment, then the body again returns to its previous state. An attempt is made to bring the internal environment into equilibrium, the same phenomenon is called homeostasis. The preservation of the internal environment in response to changes in the external environment is known as homeostasis. Three elements - the sun, moon, and air - maintain this cosmos in the exterior environment. The three energies of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha maintain our body in the same way as the universe. Furthermore, the fundamentals of our body are Doshas, Dhatus, and Malas. Thus, homeostasis in Ayurveda refers to the state of equilibrium between Doshas, Dhatus, and Malas, which stand for our internal environment. This article attempts to review and explain the significance of Lok-Purush Samya Siddhanta in preserving the internal environment (homeostasis). This idea also applies to the concepts of treatment, which is nothing more than the restoration of homeostasis, the body's natural state.

Abstract:
From the ancient days itself the ayurvedic medicine has special importance. This ayurvedic system of medicine originated in India. In India nearly 70% of people use ayurvedic system of medicine along the western system of medicine. The Ayurveda mainly come under three classes are vata, pitta and the kapha. Chemically identified constituents of an herbal medicine that are of concern for quality control purposes are known as markers. Some of the markers are widely used for anti-inflammatory agents are Boswellia, sunthi, gokshuru, guduchi, guggulu this marker possess anti-inflammatory action that reduces pain, swelling of joints, Arthritis, joint complaints, Muscular injuries etc. The chromatographical / spectroscopical analytical development can be done for markers. The analytical development possess the way to the analytical information about the markers. The technique such as HPLC, HPTLC, LC-MS, UPLC-PDA are properly validated by ICH guidelines using validation parameters such as accuracy, recovery, precision, LOD, LOQ, Robustness etc. For many markers there is lack of development of Hyphenated techniques. By increasing the analytical techniques, research is prone to be more effective and successful to promote quality, safety and efficacy.

Huolimatta heikosta menestyksestä kumpikin esitys on saanut myöhemmin huomattavasti enemmän arvostusta osakseen.Avainsanat: Eurovision laulukilpailu, Telex, Pas de Deux, elektroninen musiikki, musiikkiteknologiat, Belgia Belgium, one point. Synthesizers, irony, and provocation in Eurovision Song Contest in 1980 and 1983In his article, the author examines two songs, participants and performances submitted by Belgium to the Eurovision Song Contest. In the early 1980s, Telex’s “Euro-Vision” (The Hague 1980) and Pas de Deux’s “Rendezvous” (Munich 1983) were both exceptionally confusing, ironical, and provocative performances. They both finished third last in the finals. These unusual performances sought to challenge the audio-visual and musical conventions of the ESC and even the values and ideals of the competition. Both songs also had their own national context, as the success of Belgium in the ESC had remained rather weak throughout the existence of the competition. The bad experiences turned into bold experiments in the early 1980s. Telex and Pas de deux built their performances on electronic rhythms, sounds and instruments. Telex performed their song with a backing tape and backing vocals, but Pas de Deux coloured their sound with the musicians of the Eurovision Orchestra and an unconventional choreography. Both groups brought a number of electronic instruments on the stage. The author analyses the songs and the performances in connection with the rise of electronic sounds and instruments into the mainstream of pop in the early 1980s and asks how the bands emerging from the musical margins consciously sought to test the limits of the competition and the receptivity of the Eurovision audience. At their time, the electronic instruments and the resulting aural, visual, and structural aesthetics were radical detachments from the moods and imaginations conjured up by a television spectacle like the ESC. Despite their poor success, these performances have since then received much more appreciation. Keywords: Eurovision Song Contest, Telex, Pas de Deux, electronic music, music technology, Belgium

Abstract:
This paper examines how the news magazine Der Spiegel and the online platform Spiegel Online (SPON) portrayed the politician Katja Kipping from the German party Die LINKE during the election campaign in 2013. Kipping is since 2012 chairman of the party Die LINKE and contributes to the increasing number of women in politics in recent years. The debate on sexism in everyday life and politics and the discussion related to the appointment of Ursula von der Leyen as the first female German defense minister has shown that an increasing number of women in politics does not automatically lead to the opinion that women are suitable for a political office. Since der Spiegel is one of Germany’s most influential weekly news magazines, it is important to be aware of the contribution it makes to a person’s image in the media and the influence on the election campaign, because if this image is undifferentiated, the reader may reduce the image even more. This reinforces the process of stereotyping. The purpose is to analyze to what extent der Spiegel and SPON spread a unilateral or a differentiated picture or concept and what features of the investigated person that are highlighted. Methodologically, the study is based on the questionnaire for frame analysis by Ziem, modifies it and applies a sequence of questions adapted to female politicians.

Abstract:
Pohdin, millä tavoin meemikuvat asettuvat osaksi transnationaalia verkkokulttuuria. Keys to Interpreting Internet Memes – Memes as a Transnational Media PhenomenonAmbiguous internet memes are increasingly seen in the mainstream public where they stand as commentaries on current affairs. Internet memes are a transnational media phenomenon connected to online subcultures, youth culture, and political humour. They are cultural content that spreads through copying and imitation. This article maps out ways to analyse internet memes. In order to do this, I study two popular memes that have appeared on a Finnish anonymous image-board. I build on the work of media scholar Limor Shifman.I define internet memes as a part of media culture, and reflect on their transnational online circulation. Transnationalism connects to globalization, and refers to global and cross-national economic, social and political connections between people, places, and institutions. The concept can also be used as an academic approach. I argue that the analysed memes express distinctly Finnish elements while incorporating global content. Of the two memes analysed here, ‘Sad Frog’ is a piece of ‘sticky’ and spreadable content which is often used to express difficult feelings. The other meme, ‘Flame Beanie and Speed Goggles’, can be understood as a carnivalesque commentary, and as mockery of a social class. Memes are often intermedial, containing movement of meaning across media genres. For this reason, the characters represented in the memes have constantly evolved, and their original meanings have transferred into something different. The carnivalesque mockery evident in memes is often random, and ultimately, the ironic edge of the meme depends on the context in which it is placed.

Flores-Junior, Olimar. "Le cynisme ancien : vie kata phusin ou vie kat'euteleian?" Thesis, Paris 4, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA040053.

Full text
Abstract:
Cynicism is a philosophical movement which started in Greece in the 4th century B.C. around the figure of Diogenes of Sinope. Modern interpreters often understand this movement as the expression of a radical naturalism, a doctrine founded on a drastic refusal of all the values of civilized life and consequently defined as a “crusade against civilization” or as an “anti-promethean current”, identifying in the “civilizing fire” the very origin of all the troubles, vices and misfortunes that men have to cope with. Accordingly, Cynic ethics would advocate a “return to nature” or to a life “according to nature” (kata phusin), guided by the idea of animality and of primitivism, that is to say a life modeled on animal behavior or on the modus vivendi of the primitive men. The present thesis aims at questionning this widely spread interpretation of cynicism on the basis of an analysis of the texts transmitted by Antiquity. The alternative interpretation that we offer rests on the reading of two major texts: the Sixth Discourse by Dio Chrysostomus and the dialogue The Cynic transmitted under the authority of Lucian of Samosate, along with some other sources, like the sixth book of Lives and opinions of eminent philosophers written by Diogenes Laertius and the Letters attributed to Diogenes of Sinope and to Crates of Thebes. It redefines Cynic philosophy as the quest for a life “according to easiness” (kat’ euteleian) and — in modern terminology — as a radical form of pragmatism, within which dualisms – notably the one between nomos and phusis – tend to be abolished in the name of a morality conditioned by the actual circumstances of individual life

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 3 reads Acker’s Don Quixote: Which Was a Dream as a form of non-procedural ‘writing-through’, a term that has its roots in the procedural practices of John Cage and Jackson Mac Low, discussed in chapter one. Acker’s literary experiment in Don Quixote is related to abortion as a literary trope, and is positioned in contrast to models of male-to-male literary insemination and canon formation. The chapter draws on the contemporary scholarship surrounding conceptual practice, such as the work of Caroline Bergvall, and addresses the tendency of critical studies on Acker’s work to use the term ‘appropriation’ as a blanket term. Acker’s experimental practices in Don Quixote are readdressed, paying attention to the complexity of those strategies. Reading the work with attention to Acker’s practice of abstraction, experimentation with translation, paragrammatic play, and the protosemantic, a method of writing through emerges whereby voice is imbricated with the negation of language. In Don Quixote experimental practice displaces centralized narrative and offers a new feminist temporality.

Abstract:
Chapter One examines Acker’s early experiments, written between 1970 and 1979, through the prism of the concerns of the poets associated with L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E. The poets’ collective vision of the social, political, and aesthetic transformative capacities of poetry clearly informed Acker’s practices. Key issues foregrounded in the opening chapter reverberate across Acker’s works: the crisis of the referent; the L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poets’ attack on the instrumental value of grammatically-centred language under capitalism; and their subsequent understanding of language-centred writing as a poetics of subversion. In its evaluation of Acker’s early writing experiments, ‘Murderer Criminals Join Sunlight’ (1972), ‘Homage to LeRoi Jones’ (1972), ‘Entrance Into Dwelling in Paradise’ (1972), ‘Working Set’ (1972), and ‘Journal Black Cats, Black Jewels’ (1972), the chapter makes a claim for the emergence of perceiver-centred spaces in Acker’s early experiments. The work of Jackson Mac Low is read as an important early influence on Acker. Her early procedural practices of writing through and typographical experimentation are early experiments that are formative to the complex writing practices found in her later works. In this way, Acker’s poetic juvenilia emerge as possessing important co-ordinates for an understanding of her later writing experiments.

Abstract:
This chapter explains how not everyone accused of trying to bring down the monarchy—lom jao—ended up charged with lèse-majesté. It explores another case brought under a different law that illustrates similar issues to the Somyot case. The national security provisions of the 2007 Computer Crime Act offer an alternative means of prosecuting the allegedly disloyal, another notch along the treason spectrum. An illustrative example is the case of former broker Katha Pajariyapong, who was accused of making two web-board postings critical of royalty on the web board of Fa Diao Kan, a critical journal that featured on the April 2010 antimonarchy organogram. The Katha case frequently resembled a theater of the absurd: laughable charges, inept lawyers who wanted to quit, bungling prosecution witnesses, and a presiding judge who claimed to be on the side of the defendant before sending him to jail. Yet the consequences of these farcical proceedings were very real: Katha ultimately served a couple of years behind bars for a meaningless “crime” that brought the law into disrepute. The chapter then argues that judges again allowed their misguided understandings concerning how to show loyalty to the monarchy to take precedence over common sense. Katha's alleged actions had no effect on the country's national security, and no criminal intent was demonstrated during the trial.

Abstract:
Charles Baudelaire suggests that the most important tropes for lyric poetry are hyperbole and apostrophe. This chapter aims to reconsider the lyric by foregrounding the importance of catastrophe, not apostrophe. The words share an etymological link through the turn of strophe. From the Greek kata (“down,” but also “against” or “over”) and strephein (“to turn”), catastrophe can translate literally as “downturn.” This chapter return to poems by Willian Wordsworth, this time paying particular attention to metaphors of “downturns” in Wordsworth's poetry, moments when heads, for instance, are turned down toward the ground. Wordsworth is a poet of catastrophes and cataclysms; his poems chronicle the many disasters and calamities that befall the dispossessed. To the extent to which Look Round for Poetry proceeds by juxtaposing poetic tropes and contemporary discourse, this chapter focuses attention on Wordsworth's “downturns” in order to discover in the rhetoric of poetry a chance to think further about the rhetoric of contemporary capitalism and the effects of economic catastrophe.

Abstract:
This chapter aims to look into the current practices of fashion production and consumption and argues for a sustainable model. This model advocates the need of conscious creation and consumption, mindful connection with the community, and conservation of the ecology. It opens up conversations about fetishistic attitudes vs. sustainable practices and how production and consumption behaviors are manufactured in postmodern society. With interpretative epistemological stance, this chapter follows qualitative research methodology to develop an alternative model of fashion production and consumption. This alternative model, ‘C3 Model of Art of Fashion', is the result of a qualitative study conducted amongst artisans, consumers, and entrepreneurs of Kantha.

Abstract:
Currently, there is a lot of talk about cancer (arbuda) at all levels of society. It includes both benign and malignant tumors. Our body is made up of Tridosha, the three fundamental energies or principles that govern our body function on the physical and emotional levels. The three energies are known as Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each individual has a different constitution from others. Prakriti is a unique concept of Ayurveda that explains individuality and has a role in maintaining health & prevention, of diseases, and achieving longevity. Each person must know their Prakriti constitution to determine the correct food, exercise, yoga, lifestyle, and environment to remain healthy and achieve longevity. Our Prakriti in Ayurveda roughly resembles DNA or genes in western medicine. Most of the theories offered regarding cancer cause fall into the following categories: embryonic,bio-chemical, infectious agents, and genetic. Ayurveda can play a big role in the last causative factor, genetics. Cancer in each person differs according to the person's exposure to pathogens and Prakriti (genetic constitutions), assessment of Prakriti is very useful in prognosis & therapeutic management of cancer. It is also helpful in prescribing suitable Ahar, Vihar, Yoga & Rasayana therapy.

Abstract:
Abstract Ivan Ilich, as a result of the illness that will soon end in his death, has been turned into a different person. This is true in a physical sense. If a stranger were given the photograph of Ivan Ilich with his wife and told to look out for that man in the street, he might well pass by today’s Ivan Ilich as not being the same man. Also, Ivan Ilich is different in a psychological sense, as this entire train of morbid analysis shows. The Ivan Ilich who existed before the illness was never given to this sort of introspection and questioning. Later it will occur to the sick Ivan Ilich to wonder whether he has lived his entire life the wrong way, and whether everything he had previously sought in life was empty and trivial; the healthy Ivan Ilich never entertained any such concerns. Yet, in a different sense, there can be no doubt that Ivan Ilich is the same person, sick or well: “He was the former little Vania with his mummy and daddy, with his brothers Mitia and Volodia, with his toys, with their coachman, with their nanny, and later with Katia, with all the joys, sorrows, and enthusiasms of youth”” (273).

Greenland, David. "An LTER Network Overview and Introduction to El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Climatic Signal and Response." In Climate Variability and Ecosystem Response in Long-Term Ecological Research Sites. Oxford University Press, 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195150599.003.0015.

Abstract:
Part II of this book deals with the quasi-quintennial timescale that is dominated by the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon. During the last 50 years, ENSO has operated with a recurrence interval between peak values of 2–7 years. The term quasi-quintennial is chosen to recognize that climatic events other than ENSO-related ones might occur at this timescale. The general significance of the ENSO phenomenon lies in its influence on natural and human ecosystems. It has been estimated that severe El Niño–related flooding and droughts in Africa, Latin America, North America, and Southeast Asia resulted in more than 22,000 lives lost and more than $36 billion in damages during 1997– 1998 (Buizer et al. 2000). The specific significance of ENSO within the context of this book is that it provides fairly well-bounded climatic events for which specific ecological responses may be identified. In the other chapters in part II, we first look at the U.S. Southwest. The Southwest is home to an urban LTER site, the Central Arizona-Phoenix (CAP) site. Tony Brazel and Andrew Ellis describe the clear ENSO climatic signal at this site and identify surprising responses that cascade into the human/economic system. Ray Smith, Bill Fraser, and Sharon Stammerjohn provide more details of the fascinating ecological responses of the Palmer Antarctic ecosystem to ENSO. World maps of ENSO climatic signals do not usually show the Antarctic, and the LTER program provides some groundbreaking results at this location, with Smith and coworkers (see the Synthesis at the end of this part) providing such maps (figures S.1 and S.2). Kathy Welch and her colleagues present equally new discoveries related to freshwater aquatic ecosystems from the other Antarctic LTER site at the McMurdo Dry Valleys. This chapter gives a general introduction to ENSO and its climatic effects. How ever, these general patterns may mask the detailed responses that occur at individual locations. This is one reason for presenting the principal results of previous findings related to El Niños and LTER sites and one particular analysis focused on LTER sites. This analysis for the period 1957–1990 investigates the response of monthly mean temperature and monthly total precipitation standardized anomaly values to El Niño and La Niña events as indicated by the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) (Greenland 1999).

Abstract:
This work presents development and testing of image processing algorithms for the automatic detection of landmarks within ultrasound images. The aim was to automate ultrasound analysis, for use during the process of epidural needle insertion. For epidural insertion, ultrasound is increasingly used to guide the needle into the epidural space. Ultrasound can improve the safety of epidural and was recommended by the 2008 NICE guidelines (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence). Without using ultrasound, there is no way for the anaesthetist to observe the location of the needle within the ligaments requiring the use of their personal judgment which may lead to injury. If the needle stops short of the epidural space, the anaesthetic is ineffective. If the needle proceeds too deep, it can cause injuries ranging from headache, to permanent nerve damage or death. Ultrasound of the spine is particularly difficult, because the complex bony structures surrounding the spine limit the ultrasound beam acoustic windows [1]. Additionally, the important structures for epidural that need to be observed are located deeper than other conventional procedures such as peripheral nerve block. This is why a low frequency, curved probe (2–5 MHz) is used, which penetrates deeper but decreases in resolution. The benefits of automating ultrasound are to enable real-time ultrasound analysis on the live video, mitigate human error, and ensure repeatability by avoiding variation in perception by different users. Previous ultrasound image processing for epidural research used speckle image enhancement with canny and gradient based methods for bone detection [2]. A clinical trial with 39 patients had success detecting the ligamentum flavum (LF) from ultrasound by algorithms in 87% of patients. Echogenic needles and catheters are now becoming available which are enhanced for extra ultrasound visibility. The Epimed UltraKath ULTRA-KATH™ [3] has a patented design to maximize visibility under ultrasound [4]. The Echogenic Tuohy Needle also includes imprints on the needle tip that reflects ultrasound, allowing for better visualization. Curved needles can also be detected in 2D ultrasound images [5].
