Logistic coordination is the coordination of the activities of the logistics system participants, involved in the promotion of material, information and financial flows. Logistic coordination of the participants helps to coordinate the activities of the links of the logistics system participating in the promotion of material, information and financial flows. In logistics management, there are two types of coordination of participants: cross-functional and inter-organizational. Karia, Noorliza. "Resource-based logistics (RBL) and logistics performance." Thesis, University of Hull, 2011. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:5299.

Full text
Abstract:
The increasing trends of logistics outsourcing have forced logistics service providers (LSPs) to more effectively leverage their productive resources to provide superior service performance. The current logistics literature has identified some strategic logistics resources and their performance impacts but there is a lack of knowledge on the combined effects of such resources. The main objective of this research is to identify logistics resources - called resource-based logistics (RBL) – acquired by LSPs and to examine the impacts of RBL on logistics performance. Based on the resource-based view (RBV) theory, this research develops constructs and measurements for logistics resources (RBL) and logistics performance (LP) and further examines the impacts of RBL on logistics performance in terms of customer service innovation (customer service and service innovation) and cost leadership. Based on data from interviews and a survey of 123 Malaysian LSPs, factor analyses were used to establish five groups of logistics resources - technology, physical, management, relational and organizational resources, contributing to the development of constructs and measurements for logistics resources from the LSP perspective. While simple regression analyses suggest that each RBL was positively associated with customer service innovation and cost leadership, further stepwise regression analyses suggest customer service innovation was enhanced when organizational and technology resources were bundled together. These two resources largely mediated the relationships between physical, relational and management expertise and customer service innovation. Similarly, the analyses suggest that cost leadership was enhanced when organizational and management expertise resources were bundled together; these two resources mediated the relationships between technological, physical, and relational resources and cost leadership. The implications of the results for theory and practice are significant. This research provides empirical evidence for the development of a theoretical model for logistics resources grounded in RBV theory. The detailed bundling and mediating effects of logistics resources represent novel empirical evidence needed to enhance the understanding of LSP performance. This research recommends that LSPs should embark on developing capabilities in the five RBL. Especially, logistics managers should focus on developing and bundling their organizational, management and technology resources more effectively. In addition this research proposes a theoretical model for future research into the competitive advantage of LSPs.

With the effect of the environmental logistic, more and more people realize that they must emphasize and value the natural environment, and inspired by the environmental logistic there are also lots of new topic came to be discussed, i.e. the coordinated development of the green economy. The environmental logistics as the indispensable part in economic development can deal with how to help the economic and the environment harmonious coexistence with each other. Thus, the development of green logistics has become major issue for global economic development nowadays. In this paper, we make a comparison of Chinese and developed country's green logistic statue, then identify the development of green logistics problems and propose solutions. The case companies we choose are COSCO international Freight Co., Ltd and the Panalpian Ltd. company. We connect these two companies and sent out questionnaires, based on their answers, we considered some elements which affect the difference between companies in Chinese and developed countries. We test these elements on SPSS, and carry out elements effecting environmental logistics. Based on this questionnaires,  we find out huge differences between these two companies, meanwhile there are five factors we summarized which influencing the gap between China and developed country in environmental logistics. Therefore, we give some suggestions for China's environmental future logistics.

Abstract:

The business environment has changed tremendously in the last two decades. Corporations have been forced to realign their global strategies and in order to cut costs, they started to transfer activities which were previously performed in-house to the market (e.g. IT, manufacturing or logistics) focusing instead on their core competencies. Nowadays companies outsource several of their logistics activities to so-called third-party logistics (3PL) companies and thus from being centralized, vertically integrated and with single-sited manufacturing facilities, enterprises have their network of resources globally dispersed.

As a result corporate management has realized that the competitive vehicle is no longer the individual firm, with its own resources and competencies. Instead, in order to cope with shorter product life cycles and ever more demanding customers, both on industrial and consumer markets, individual firms need to strategically become part of ‘extended enterprises’; that is, networks of specialist providers of resources and competencies.

However, because the capabilities to manage the entire network do not exist in any one organization, a new business organization was needed to provide the strategic knowledge and competence that will enable the complete integration of the supply chain. This new sort of firm, with core competencies on logistics processes and supply chain IT integration, besides offering consulting services on implementation and development of logistics and supply chain solutions, manages through the use of logistics control towers “the best of breed” 3PL specialists, integrating the end-to-end supply chain so that superior customer value is delivered in the most cost effective way. But how does the use of a supply chain integrator help the supply chain as a whole to achieve competitive advantages that enhance end-customer service? This paper aims to answer the above question. I felt that in order to be able to do that the most appropriate research strategy would be a qualitative study. Hence, a multi-case study was performed on three Swedish companies which differentiate themselves from the more traditional third-party logistics providers. The study was conducted by performing a set of semi-structured interviews with these companies. In order to give the study some sort of structure, I used an interview guide which was divided into three different themes; a) Organizational Design, b) Enterprise Logistics Integration and c) Logistics and Competitive advantages.

Once the interviews were transcribed and summarized, the empirical findings were then analyzed in light of a theoretical framework chosen previously. These theories, which in general terms relate to organizational design, supply chain management and finance, were also divided in the same themes as above. Finally, conclusions were drawn by linking the results of the interviews with the theoretical framework. It became evident that the supply chain integrator can help the supply chain as a whole not only to reduce costs related to inventory holding but also to help its client to improve end-customer service.

Abstract:
During the last decades, disasters and catastrophes both natural and handmade have been radically increased and it seems this way of things will continue the next years. In such this situation there has been even a growth in terms of humanitarian operations, in particular of the total humanitarian effort in terms of resources and supply chain in general. According to the literature here, the logistic impact covers up to 80% percent of the total effort. All the organizations involved in these operations gave special attention to logistic performance, with an always crescent focus on effectiveness, efficiency and sustainability. In fact, the long term social impact that the disasters and the next operations can cause to the population and in general to the area, is well known by the researchers. For these reasons it is important to define, monitor and improve the logistic functions efficiency; moreover it is important to introduce a new sustainable way to reach the success of all the operations perspectives. With this goal in mind, this research introduces new theoretical innovative methods to analyze the logistic systems performances and it introduces, through an appropriate and deep literature review, new models that present the sustainability and the social impact associated to the logistic practices in the humanitarian environment. This thesis is composed by these principal sections: • Introduction and analysis of the humanitarian literature with a focus on the different divers that usually are used for the evaluation of humanitarian operations. Moreover it presents a definition of a general decision making framework and its application. • Introduction and definition of forward distribution models. In particular, the discussion of the tradeoff between the costs analysis and the demand satisfaction or shortage, associated to the use of different fleets and the development of innovative heuristic models for the distribution that considers typical humanitarian features. • Introduction and definition of innovative reverse logistics practices based on what is normally used in the industrial supply chain and based on what the humanitarian organizations are implementing in the fields; as an example it is presented a real reverse logistics case, with real data and issued from an Italian case study, the Emilia Romagna earthquake (2012). Moreover, an innovative reverse logistic model for the location of reverse plants is presented, with the study of their impact in humanitarian operations. The present work has carried out to the publishing of several scientific contributions in relevant International Journals and Conferences, like Journal of Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Management, International Journal of Service and Operations Management and International Journal of Operations and Quantitative Management.

Full text
Abstract:
The greening of our logistics systems has become a concern for many more than just those that operate and find themselves within supply chains. One of the organizations that accounts for a large share of negative environmental impact is the logistics service providers (LSPs), often responsible for the management and operation of transports. However, LSPs cannot be held solely accountable, as their services are procured from shippers in need of shipping goods to their customers. Additionally, many shippers affect the environmental performance of the logistics systems, both with their own operations and what they request from LSPs but also their promises to customers. By interacting with each other, organizations can share resources, information, and knowledge, as these items are required for implementing green logistics practices (GLPs). With additional resources, information, and knowledge, LSPs can implement GLPs successfully, without needing to procure or acquire resources, information, or knowledge, elsewhere. Therefore, the purpose of this licentiate thesis is to explore how supply chain interaction can facilitate logistics service providers to implement green logistics practices. The research in this thesis is both explorative and descriptive. The purpose is explorative, but to fulfill the purpose, GLPs must be described to include the need for interaction. Building on the description of GLPs is the exploration of forms of interactions that occur when implementing GLPs. Lastly, the interactions are explored throughout the implementation process to investigate how the interactions are characterized in the different phases that constitute the implementation process. Throughout the analysis and discussion, several important organizations for the LSP to interact with are identified; this includes shippers, technology providers, as well as actors within the LSPs. Different forms of interaction, which includes both internal and external interaction with different organizations and actors, are suggested in order for LSPs to acquire the information, resources, and knowledge necessary to implement GLPs. Additionally, the forms of interactions between organizations and actors changed with the implementation process, which suggests that different phases characterize both the interactions that occur and the need for interaction. Finally, it is proposed that supply chain interaction facilitates the LSPs to implement GLPs, by allowing the LSP to acquire information, knowledge, and resources through communication, trust, and commitment with other organizations or actors. The main contribution of this licentiate thesis to research and the green logistics literature is the identification of the need to have various forms of interaction with different organizations and actors when implementing GLPs. This illustrates that other organizations than the shipper can have information, resources, or knowledge that can facilitate LSPs to implement GLPs, instead of the LSP acquiring similar information, resources, or knowledge elsewhere and by themselves. Additionally, as interaction is a "two-way street", it allows access to valuable items and requires items offered in exchange for those items. Therefore, it is suggested to have various forms of external interaction with other organizations or internal interaction with actors within the same organizations. Thus, the interactions become less costly to withhold, and as the purpose of the interaction is to mitigate the cost of implementing GLPs, the finalized cost of implementing GLPs becomes lower. The contribution to practice instead helps organizations to highlight that interaction with key organizations can facilitate the implantation of GLPs and thus facilitate the much-required greening of our logistics systems.

Niklasson, Lisa, and Lina Toft. "Construction logistics."

Full text
Abstract:
There is often talk about the construction industry and its reluctant to change. The industry also lags behind in productivity and cost reduction compared to other industries. Statistics from SCB shows that the costs of producing buildings have risen sharply over time, although the construction companies continue to build. We will therefore in this thesis examine the application of logistics in the construction industry and the problems involved. This is because a non-functioning logistics leads to higher costs. With the help of a literature review and interviews with people in the construction industry we will try to answer the following questions: o Are there any unique conditions for the construction industry, which explains its loweffectiveness? o Why hasn’t the construction industry improved its logistics at the same pace as other sectors? An explanation of the construction industry's slow pace of change may be that the urge from the market aren’t strong enough. The final customer has a weak position in the construction market and therefore customers demand doesn’t work as a good enough instruments. Wastage and embedded uncertainty is a common problem in a building project. Wasting is an activity that consumes resources but doesn’t create any value. Construction firms have thus created a tradition of working in high risk and uncertainties. The consequences of these risks and uncertainties are often negative, such as variations in process and variation outcome. Another common problem is fault in the construction, arising out of negligence, carelessness, ignorance or lack of clarity. The implications of these faults are high costs and poor quality of rectification. Many of these construction faults could be avoided by a deliberate planning, clear orders and good timing. The interaction between different actors is a major success factor in the manufacturing process. With good co-operation you save both time and money. Lean Construction is an application of Lean Production in the construction industry. The construction industry has in recent years realized that cooperation between building owners, contractors and suppliers are valuable. The construction industry has largely remained problems that previously existed in the automotive industry such as losses on the value of coordination problems, waiting times and information-related problems. If the construction process will be more influenced by Lean, there is great potential for streamlining. Since Sweden is very high in the pulp and paper industry, we have chosen to compare the construction industry with this industry. The technological processes in the pulp and paper industry have been intensified considerably in recent decades, which is the opposite of what the construction industry has made. One reason for is that the competition in the construction industry is low and therefore there is no need and desire to streamline themselves to oust their opponents. The construction industry has some unique conditions, the projects carries out in new places every time which makes it difficult to know the conditions for each new project. However, the construction industry would be more efficient and much waste could be reduced by better planning and better cooperation among the different actors.

Abstract:
The logistics issue is one of the biggest challenges faced in today's construction industry. An increasing number of projects suffer from logistics problems that need to be examined, problems that are increasingly common in line with the high housing output. These problems are important to investigate as it especially affects savings, planning, damage and time and more. The list can be made long and is increasingly prevalent in today's construction industry. The purpose of this study is to provide solutions for improving logistics management at a construction site by comparing three different projects. Through this comparison, the authors have identified the parameters that influence logistics flow negatively, how efficient logistics flow can be achieved, and whether it is profitable with a logistics program. BTH Bygg currently has a number of different projects. The focus will be on the project Lyngsåsa, located in Dalarö, which is the primary project for this study. Furthermore, Lyngsåsa is to be compared with the Rosenlundsparken and Steninge Slottsby projects. Lyngsåsa is the only project of the above that has used Ahlsell's logistics program due to previous logistics problems. Exploration of the study has been based on the combination of literature studies, electronic information search, questionnaire and interviews. The survey was divided into professionals and officials on the three projects and interviews have been conducted for more responsible officials with experience and knowledge to get a deeper picture of the subject. The result shows that logistics programs are good for projects that are more complex, projects that suffer from production stoppages. The study shows that projects that are located closer to the city center have limited areas. In this study we recommend a logistics program for the Rosenlundsparken project. Parameters that adversely affect the logistics flow are poor communication and poor planning. Tools that construction companies can utilize are 7R, 5S and JIT.
