Abstract:
From the Temple to the cathedral: the calvary of Louis XVII In 2004, more than 200 years after his death in the Temple prison, the heart of Louis XVII, the successor to France’s last king of the Ancien Régime, Louis XVI, was buried in the royal necropolis of Saint-Denis. Despite numerous publications on the destiny of the Little Prince, the chronology of his short life was not determined by historians and biographers, but by scientists who, in 2000, performed DNA tests on the petrified organ, which was miraculously preserved. Before this date, the biographies of the many pretenders to Louis XVII’s throne (that of Naundorff in particular) were better-known than the lifehistory of Marie Antoinette’s youngest son. Since then, various publications have changed this state of affairs, including an historical novel by one of France’s most knowledgeable authors on the monarchy of the 17th and 18th centuries and a biographical novel by a member of the Bourbon family. Antonia Fraser’s (2001) biography on Marie Antoinette and Sofia Coppola’s (2006) film on her life have rekindled interest in the events of the French revolution. The story of Louis XVII, who was used as a pawn by the revolutionaries, is one the most tragic of that period in the country’s history. This article provides an overview of key events gleaned from various sources, translated into Afrikaans for the first time.

Abstract:
Activated carbon filters are widely used to remove gaseous pollutants in order to guarantee a healthy living environment. The standard method for evaluating the adsorption performance of filters is conducted at ~100 ppm. Although this accelerates the test and avoids the high requirements of the test device, it is still far from the contaminant concentration in the indoor environment, and adsorbents in practical application may show different capabilities. Therefore, this study compared several methods for predicting the adsorption performance of activated carbon and recommended a procedure based on the Wheeler–Jonas model to estimate the breakthrough curve at low concentrations using experimental data at high concentrations. The results showed that the Langmuir model and Wood–Lodewyckx correlation were the most suitable for obtaining the equilibrium adsorption capacity and mass transfer coefficient, which are critical parameters in the Wheeler–Jonas model. The predicted service life was derived from the breakthrough curve. A modification method based on a relationship with inlet gas concentration was proposed to reduce the prediction deviation of the service life. After modification, the maximum deviation was within two hours and the relative deviation was no more than 7%.

Abstract:
Abstract Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most prevalent, non-cutaneous, cancer in men in the Western world. Disease confined to the prostate can be cured, but metastatic disease cannot. PCa metastases are found in bone, lymph-nodes, liver and other visceral organs (visceral), in decreasing order of frequency. After an initial response to androgen receptor directed therapy, metastatic disease will inevitably recur as metastatic castration resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), which is hallmarked by high morbidity and mortality. Since it is previously established, that the site of metastasis correlates with prostate cancer survival, we need a better understanding of metastatic organotropism. Therefore, we took advantage of the largest Whole Genome Sequencing (HiSeq X Ten system using the paired-end sequencing protocol) data set of mCRPC metastases to date. Molecular profiling of 326 metastases (Bone: 105, Lymph-node: 149, Liver: 49, Visceral: 23) revealed genetic determinants associated with organ-specific metastasis. First, we assessed differential occurrence of mutations in genes associated with targetable pathways. RB1 alteration were enriched in liver (35%) and in visceral metastases (30%), while lower rates were found in bone (10%) and lymph-nodes (13%)(Fisher exact test, p: 0.012). Analysis of aggregated pathway alteration data revealed a trend for increased frequency of alterations in the DNA repair and PI3K pathways in lymph node vs. bone metastases (p: 0.066 and 0.066, respectively). Next, we explored differential tumor mutational burden (TMB) between the sites. A higher TMB was observed in liver and visceral metastases compared to bone and lymph node metastases, while there was no difference between liver and visceral. The increased TMB in liver and visceral samples was associated with an MMR-deficiency mutational signature. Alterations in MSH6, MLH1 and POLD3 characterized a significant proportion of high TMB liver metastases, whereas high TMB visceral metastases predominantly showed MSH2 and POLD1 alterations. In conclusion: Our findings implicate high TMB/MMR-deficiency is a characteristic feature of liver and visceral PCa metastases, potentially impacting disease progression. Moreover, since response to immune check-point inhibitors is associated with high TMB, our findings might direct choice of therapy. Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a non-obligate precursor of invasive breast cancer. Patients with DCIS are routinely treated by breast-conserving surgery often supplemented by radiotherapy, although many will never develop invasive disease. To date, no robust predictors of invasive breast cancer recurrence following DCIS have been identified. In our efforts to find such predictors, we performed gene expression, copy number and mutation analysis on two large DCIS cohorts with long-term follow-up. Methods Two nested case control series were analyzed, where cases are defined as DCIS with a subsequent invasive breast cancer and controls remained disease free during follow up. Cases and controls were matched on age and on follow up duration and were derived from two nation-wide cohort studies. The Sloane cohort is a prospective breast screening cohort from the UK, median follow up is 6 years (range 1-10). The Dutch cohort is population-based and had a median follow up of 13 years (range 2-23). We performed copy number analysis using CytoSNP array or low pass whole genome sequencing (lpWGS) on 310 controls and 196 cases, and RNA-seq on 295 controls and 206 cases. Results First analyses on the copy number data suggest that cases are genetically more aberrant with multiple regions of amplification compared to controls (p < 0.05). RNA-seq was used to classify DCIS into the PAM50 subtypes which did not appear to be predictive of recurrence. Initial RNA-seq analysis did not show consistent gene expression differences between cases and controls in the Sloane or Dutch cohorts, possibly explained by differences in clinical characteristics of the cohorts. A new computational method has been developed accounting for the differences in follow-up times, results will be presented at SABCS. Targeted sequencing revealed that the most common mutations were in PIK3CA and TP53, but there was no association with recurrence. Conclusion Only small molecular differences were identified between DCIS that recurs as invasive breast cancer and DCIS that remains disease-free. Currently, we are seeking to identify reproducible differences by a combined analysis of two population-based cohorts in a time dependent fashion. These will be presented at the SABCS. Abstract:
This study investigates the extent to which a communication sessions' QoS parameters can be measured through only extracting TCP/IP header data. The effect on these measurements based on the point of header extraction within the network as well as the OSI stack are also investigated. An overview of packet switched networks and packet switched network protocols are given. The disadvantages and advantages of different network architectures and protocols are also given. Different network simulation tools are discussed and compared to find the most appropriate simulation tool for this study. Two network topologies are introduced and sessions are constructed and monitored through only using the TCP/IP header data. Sessions are established and maintained and the results obtained from these sessions are compared and the most appropriate solution is chosen. The results have shown that extracting data at the edge routers for sessions are the most optimal solution. These sessions are established and maintained through using virtual private network technologies and protocols.

Abstract:
The teacher has a notable legal duty with regard to attentive supervision and the safety of the pupils in the workshop. It is expected of the professionally trained workshop teacher to look after the pupil placed in his care as conscientiously as a solicitous father would. The teacher's discretion and conduct should always be based on predictable and preventative action. Because pupils cannot possibly have the discernment of adults about more and Jess dangerous situations, the teacher should make provision for this factor in. his daily planning. Juridical aspects such as solicitous care, predictable and preventative action, in addition to the elements of accountability such as action, illegality, guilt, causality and damage demarcate and elucidate the daily task of the workshop teacher, who should ascertain that he is familiar with all these aspects. Because of this, a literature research on this matter has been undertaken. The aim of the empirical research has been to determine the present state of knowledge of the workshop teacher regarding to certain educational law aspects and the teacher's solicitous supervising role concerning pupil safety. A case study with appropriate questions on juridical teaching matters has been used to determine if the workshop teacher is capable of applying in practice, during normal situations, those juridical instructions which apply directly to his profession. By means of this empirical study the following problems were identified: • The respondents revealed an ignorance with regard to the following characteristic behaviour traits of pupils: impulsiveness, recklessness, disobedience, inconsiderate motion and disadvantage-causing behaviour. • A large number of respondents were not capable of applying their knowledge of juridical teaching matters in a case study. Specific recommendations have been made which should lead to a more sound prepared workshop teacher for his task as solicitous supervisor of his pupils' safety.

Van, Eeden Hendrik Lodewyk. "Development of an ultra-high radio-frequency identification system / Hendrik Lodewyk van Eeden." Thesis, North-West University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/625.

Abstract:
Ultra-high radio-frequency identification (UHF RFID) systems outperform all other RFID technologies in terms of throughput and reading range. UHF RFID tags and readers will be deployed on unprecedented scales during the next few years. This could result in problems of inter-operability and large-scale interference from readers. This thesis describes the systematic analysis of optimal requirements and the systematic derivation of a set of design objectives and guidelines for a UHF RFID system and air protocol that differs from other UHF RFID systems in use today. In brief, this is a system where the reader transmits little or no data to the tags and is therefore low noise and narrow band. This makes this system (and specifically the protocol) one that can support a higher density of readers, and thus leads to an improved system throughput and effectiveness. The principal challenge is to design and implement a tag protocol that addresses all of the requirements derived for the UHF RFID system. Thus, at the core of the system is the iP-X anti-collision protocol, a stochastic Aloha-like over-the-air communications protocol. The protocol is described and analysed in this work, both in terms of its throughput performance as an anti-collision protocol, and also in terms of its RF characteristics and benefits. The major result of this work is the successful implementation of a series of tag chips that have been designed to implement the protocol. Both readers and tags are currently in production and are being successfully marketed and sold worldwide.

Van, Staden Hendrik Lodewyk. "The effectiveness of dual branding in the agricultural sector / by Hendrik Lodewyk van Staden." Thesis, North-West University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/2598.

Full text
Abstract:
The study deals with the concept of competing in the market with a dual branding strategy against mono-brands. The research, more specifically, examines the market awareness of the brand regarding the company versus the product. Monsanto SA, as a company, deals in the market as DEKALB. The study is based on the principles of the Burrows model of corporate identity. A tailor-made questionnaire was used as the measuring instrument. A total of 281 respondents completed the questionnaires. Data analysis was done by means of descriptive statistics and a Varimax rotated factor analysis. The reliability of the data was verified by determining the Cronbach's alpha coefficient. In this investigation, for the brand DEKALB, only one factor contributes to the brand image identified as dynamism. For Monsanto SA, two factors contribute to the organisation image. These factors are identified as dynamism and visual identity. The research concludes that although brand identities are similar to a large extent, the market views Monsanto SA more defined. A second factor is identified in addition to the common factor in both identities. The final and most important conclusion is that dual branding in the marketing strategy influences corporate identity and image, and vice versa. Monsanto SA should, therefore, take care not to confuse the market. Currently, agreement exists between the two identities, but it could easily result in confusion. Marketing strategies of Monsanto SA and DEKALB should purposefully dovetail to ensure that market confusion does not set in.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the history of Commonwealth Government higher education policy in Australia between 1958 and 1997 and its impact on the development of two groups of academic librarians: the Association of Librarians in Colleges in Advanced Education (ALCAE) and the Committee of Australian University Librarians (CAUL). Although university librarians had met occasionally since the late 1920s, it was only in 1965 that a more formal organisation, known as CAUL, was established to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information. ALCAE was set up in 1969 and played an important role helping develop a special concept of library service peculiar to the newly formed College of Advanced Education (CAE) sector. As well as examining the impact of Commonwealth Government higher education policy on ALCAE and CAUL, the thesis also explores the influence of other factors on these two groups, including the range of personalities that comprised them, and their relationship with their parent institutions and with other professional groups and organisations. The study focuses on how higher education policy and these other external and internal factors shaped the functions, aspirations, and internal dynamics of these two groups and how this resulted in each group evolving differently. The author argues that, because of the greater attention given to the special educational role of libraries in the CAE curriculum, the group of college librarians had the opportunity to participate in, and have some influence on, Commonwealth Government statutory bodies responsible for the coordination of policy and the distribution of funding for the CAE sector. The link between ALCAE and formal policy-making processes resulted in a more dynamic group than CAUL, with the university librarians being discouraged by their Vice-Chancellors from having contact with university funding bodies because of the desire of the universities to maintain a greater level of control over their affairs and resist interference from government. The circumstances of each group underwent a reversal over time as ALCAE's effectiveness began to diminish as a result of changes to the CAE sector and as member interest was transferred to other groups and organisations. Conversely, CAUL gradually became a more active group during the 1980s and early 1990s as a result of changes to higher education, the efforts of some university librarians, and changes in membership. This study is based principally on primary source material, with the story of ALCAE and CAUL being told through the use of a combination of original documentation (including minutes of meetings and correspondence) and interviews with members of each group and other key figures.

This research report focuses on the environmental poetry of Johann Lodewyk Marais. His poetry has been described as “green”, “environmental”, “ecopoetical”, “bioregional” and “biogeographical” and critics agree that the oeuvre displays a strong element of conservation and even preservation. Marais’s unique contribution towards this discourse of conservation is assessed by utilising certain key concepts from museology, which frequently manifests in his poetry as metaphors: taxonomy, taxidermy and diorama. Halloran’s notion of the text as archival space or museum, read in tandem with these concepts of taxonomy, taxidermy and diorama, is then presented as a reading strategy for decoding Marais’s poetry.

Van, der Zee Lodewyk Francois. "Modelling of electricity cost risks and opportunities in the gold mining industry / Lodewyk Francois van der Zee." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/12267.

Full text
Abstract:
Carbon tax, increased reactive power charges, tariff increases and the Energy Conservation Scheme (ECS) are some of the worrying electricity cost risks faced by large South African industries. Some of these proposed cost risks are not enforced as yet, but once approved could threaten company financial viability and thousands of jobs. Managing multiple cost risks associated with electricity consumption at several mines can be laborious and complex. This is largely due to circumstantial rules related to each potential electricity cost risk and unique mine characteristic. To limit the electricity cost risks for a mining company, clear strategies and focus areas need to be identified. No literature was found that provides a simplified integrated electricity cost risk and mitigation strategy for the South African gold mining industry. Previous studies only focused on a single mine or mining subsystem. Literature pertaining to potential risks is available, however the exact impact and mitigation on the gold mining industry has yet to be determined. The aim of this study is to accurately predict the impact of electricity cost risks and identify strategies that could alleviate their cost implications. Electricity consumption and installed capacities were used to benchmark mines and categorise them according to investigated risks. The benchmarked results provided an accurate starting point to identify best practices and develop electricity cost saving strategies. This study will highlight the additional benefits that can be obtained by managing electricity usage for a group of mines or mining company. Newly developed models are used to quantify savings on pumping, compressed air and cooling systems. To manage and report on the potential risks and mitigation, an ISO 50001 based energy management system was developed and implemented. The applied and developed models can also be adjusted to review and manage the potential cost risks on other types of mines. Derived risk and mitigation models were further used to quantify the impact on one of the largest gold mining companies in South Africa. These models indicate a potential annual price increase of 12%, while mitigation strategies could reduce the electricity consumption by more than 7%. Mitigation savings resulted from proposed projects as well as behavioural change-induced savings due to improved management. Over a five-year period the projects identified could result in electricity costs savings of between R675-million and R819-million.

Krüger, Louis Lodewyk. "The creation of a general duty to bargain in view of the SANDF judgements / Louis Lodewyk Krüger." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/15923.

Full text
Abstract:
Section 23(5) of the Constitution entrenches trade unions, employer's organisations and employers' right to engage in collective bargaining. For employees, collective bargaining is the key which opens the door to better wages, improved working conditions and an overall better standard of living to name but a few. The Labour Relations Act was promulgated to give effect to section 23 of the Constitution. However, in section 2 of the Labour Relations Act, members of the South African National Defence Force were excluded from the ambit of the Labour Relations Act (LRA). After the Constitutional Court regarded members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to be "workers", they also had the right to engage in collective bargaining. However, because of the special duty that the members of the SANDF have to fulfil namely to ensure the safety of the republic and its citizens, they are not awarded the right to strike. The question therefor is: How do the members of the SANDF compel the SANDF to bargain with them? The aim of this study is to establish if a duty to bargain was implemented by Chapter XX of the General Regulations of the South African National Defence Force and the Reserve. Firstly, the new dispensation of voluntarism under the new LRA is examined to understand how collective bargaining would work in a normal situation and not that of the members of the SANDF. Freedom of association is also discussed. The reason for this was because members of the SANDF also have to right to associate with a trade union of their choice by sections 18 and 23(2) of the Constitution. Under the new LRA, organisational rights also play a major role in the bargaining process and afford trade unions more bargaining power. The voluntarist approach followed by the new LRA effectively removed the duty to bargain from collective bargaining. As explained above, the special situation applicable to the SANDF and its members are not governed by the LRA and therefor a duty to bargain might still exist in this specific system of collective bargaining managed by the regulations. The duty to bargain is based on representativeness and good faith which are also examined in this study. To establish if a duty to bargain was created by the courts, an examination of the judgements of the High Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court. The Constitutional Court reiterated that there is no legally enforceable duty to bargain between the SANDF and the South African National Defence Union (SANDU). If Chapter XX of the regulations is scrutinised, it can however be seen that there is an initial duty on the SANDF to bargain with a registered military trade union over matter set out in regulation 36 which include most if not all matters of mutual interest. Therefor it would seem that a duty to bargain is created by Chapter XX.

An Employee Assistance Programme is a tool any organization can use or implement to assist in the identification and treatment of the troubled employee, whilst keeping the employee motivated. Employees will get professional counselling to help them resolve personal or work-related problems which can have a dramatic impact on their work performance. This will spiral down to low productivity within any organization. It must be noted that the EAP is rendering short term counselling. This is where the focus is on identifying and clarifying the problem, where solutions will be implemented and progress be monitored. Success of the EA programme will only be visible if employees have the correct perception of service rendered, and most of all management must buy into the programme to ensure its effectiveness. A blend of qualitative and quantitative research approach was used, with a dominant quantitative approach. The information collection method used was interviewing of managers and focus groups by means of semi structured questionnaires. The respondents amounted to a total of 35 where it was reflected in the three focus groups consisting out of 10 respondents and the remaining 5 respondents were the managers of the Potchefstroom Correctional Centre. The results indicated the majority of the staff component is aware of the EAP and they think that the EAP program is making an impact in the area. Respondents also felt that the status of the EAP programme within the Department of Correctional Services must be elevated for effective use. The results also indicated that the majority of the respondents are satisfied with the programme.
