Abstract:
Three distinct length scales are involved in the deformation evolution and catastrophic rupture of heterogeneous rocks in general: two essential ones are the specimen size macroscopically and the grain size at micro-scale respectively, the other is the emerging localized band of deformation and damage. The band initiates almost nearby the peak load, and the rupture eventually occurs afterwards within the localized band. In this paper, we report that with the evolution of concentrated high strain and damage in the localized band, a power-law singularity emerges within the localized band preceding the eventual rupture. The localization of deformation imposes a spatial non-uniqueness on the power-law singularity, and then leads to a trans-scale characteristic of the power-law singularity. Based on this characteristic, it is demonstrated that the singularity presented by the global response of a whole specimen comes from the singularity of local response in the localized band. The localization and the power-law singularity are associated precursory events, spatially and temporally, respectively, before macroscopic rupture. In particular, based on the power-law singularity exhibited in the zonal areas near or across the rupture surface, a prediction of the occurrence time of catastrophic rupture can be made accordingly. This provides a practically helpful approach to the prediction of rupture, merely by means of monitoring the zonal areas adjacent to the localized band.

Abstract:
An experimental and theoretical study of the motion and interaction of the localized excitations in a vertically driven small rectangular water container is reported. Close to the Faraday instability, the parametrically driven damped nonlinear Schrödinger equation models this system. This model allows one to characterize the pair interaction law between localized excitations. Experimentally we have a good agreement with the pair interaction law.

Abstract:
Law is often seen as peripheral to Southern life before the Civil War, and the South as an outlier in the American legal history of that era. InThe People and Their Peace(2009), Laura Edwards demonstrates the profoundly legal nature of Southern society and takes an important step toward integrating the legal history of the South with that of the nation. Edwards identifies two dueling legal cultures in North and South Carolina between 1787 and 1840—the law of local courts, which she terms localized law, and the state law of professionalized lawyers and reformers. She argues that white women, slaves, and the poor fared better in localized law—which was based on notions of popular sovereignty and the flexible rubric of restoring “the peace”—than in state courts, which were steeped in a national culture of individual rights that led to more restrictive results. This essay questions Edwards's dichotomy between local law and state law and her depiction of the popular content of localized law, while building on Edwards's innovations to suggest a new direction for Southern legal history.

We present metric solutions in six and higher dimensions with bulk cosmological constant, where gravity is localized on a 3-brane. The corrections to four-dimensional gravity from the bulk continuum modes are power-law suppressed. Furthermore, the introduction of a bulk "hedgehog" magnetic field leads to a regular geometry, and can localize gravity on the 3-brane with either positive, zero or negative bulk cosmological constant.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the transition from a localized damage state to crack formation. Several attempts have already been made in this field. Our approach is in the continuity of studies where thermodynamic considerations lead to the definition of an equivalent crack concept. The main idea consists in replacing a damaged localized zone by a crack in order to recover the same amount of dissipated energy. On the one hand, a nonlocal model is used to modelize accurately localized damage. On the other hand, an elastic model which authorizes the formation of a crack described by a cohesive zone model is used. This cohesive zone model is defined thermodynamically in order to be in concordance with the damage model. The method allows obtaining the cohesive zone model traction curve from the knowledge of the nonlocal damage model solution. The numerical implementation is done using a Lagrangian multiplier that ensures the energetic equivalence between both models.

Carniama, Mathieu. "La préférence locale." Electronic Thesis or Diss., La Réunion, 2022. http://www.theses.fr/2022LARE0025.

Full text
Abstract:
Local preference is a sensitive issue. It fascinates those who claim it. It tenses up those who reject it. In the French legal order, this favorable measure is assimilated as a positive discrimination carrying a territorial differentialism. In a sense, local preference would be the legal phenomenon where the respective limits of the principles of equality and indivisibility of the Republic converge. Local preference would therefore be inherently suspect. The objective of the thesis breaks with these premises. Local preference can be reconciled with the French republican, universalist and indivisible model. To this end, it was first necessary to identify the characteristic features of local preference. This step revealed that local preference, like any positive discrimination, carries typical functions: both legitimate and subversive. Nevertheless, its beneficiaries remain atypical. Local preference is less than an ethnic preference, but more than a territorial preference. Secondly, it was necessary to consider the applicable regime. As such, local preference is characterized by a form of duality. Its integration is based, first, on positive constitutional authorization. In this case, the local preference falls, to some extent, within the competence of the local government. It is then based on a negative constitutional authorization. In this case, local preference falls, in principle, within the competence of the central power. These integration regimes question the aporias of the republican model which, while easily recognizing a right of local preference, struggles to realize a right to local preference

Local irrigation is important in Brazilian agriculture, mainly because of the low water consumption, due to the water crisis that the country has been experiencing in recent years, but also due to the lower energy expenditure and high uniformity of water distribution. But one of the problems faced when this system is placed subsurface. Emitter clogging, caused by soil particles or root intrusion, aimed to evaluate different geotextile weights in the coverage of drippers installed subsuperfically as a physical blade to prevent or minimize the clogging of the emitters in the cultivation of cultivated grams. The drippers were coated with different geotextile weights as a physical barrier to prevent or minimize the degree of clogging. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the Department of Soils and Environmental Resources of the Faculty of Agronomic Sciences, UNESP, municipality of Botucatu - SP. The experimental design was a randomized complete block (DBC), with eight treatments: T1 without geotextile, T2 polypropylene nonwoven geotextile (N26.1), T3 polypropylene nonwoven geotextile (N30.1) and T4 nonwoven geotextile needle in polypropylene (N40.1), with five replicates, and two grasses, totaling 40 experimental units in 25-liter pots. It wasobserved that the species of grams cultivated did not present significant results, when analyzing the images by WinRhizo, in number of roots, length and volume between species and treatments at 30, 60, 90 and 120 (DAP). The fresh mass evaluated from the chips showed significant results between treatments and not between species, being the weight N.30 higher than the other results. Root intrusion considers null, since there was no root attached to the emitters.

Abstract:
In recent times, metallic nanoparticle plasmonics coupled with applications towards biosensing has gathered momentum to the point where commercial R&D are investing large resources in developing the so-called localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) biosensors. Conceptually, the main motivation for the research presented within this thesis is achievement of fully-operational LSPR biosensor interfaced with the state-of-the-art microfluidics, allowing for very precise control of sample manipulation and stable read-out. LSPR sensors are specifficaly engineered by electron beam lithography nanofabrication technique, where nanoparticle interactions are optimized to exhibit increased sensitivity and higher signal-to-noise ratio. However, the overall performance of LSPR lab-on-a-chip device depends critically on the biorecognition layer preparation in combination with surface passivation. As an introduction, the principles of plasmonic biosensing are identified encompassing both Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) and Localized SPR. Being successfully implemented into commercial product, the governing physics of SPR is compared to LSPR in chapter 1, together with advantages and disadvantages of both. Chapter 2 describes methods necessary for LSPR biosensor development, beginning with nano-fabrication methods, the modelling tool (COMSOL Multiphisics), while the basics of micro-fabrication in microfluidics conclude this chapter, where passive and active microfluidics networks are discerned. Particularly attractive optical properties are exhibited by closely-coupled nanoparticles (dimers), with the dielectric gap of below tens of nm, which were theoretically predicted to be very suitable as LSPR biosensing substrates. Chapter 3 is subjected to optical characterization (dependence on the size of the dielectric gap) of nanofabricated dimer arrays. The acquired data demonstrate the advantages of the nanofabrication methods presented in chapter 2 and the technique for fast and reliable determination of nanoparticle characteristic parameters. The initial biosensing-like experiments presented in chapter 4 (no integration with microfluidics) proved for the first time, the theoretical predictions of higher sensitivity, yielding additionally the specific response as function of analyte size and dielectric gap between nanoparticles. The overall response of different dimer arrays (various gaps) provides information about adopted conformation of analyte protein once immobilized. Broad resonances of dimers feature higher noise when employing them for the real-time LSPR biosensing. As a way to circumvent such problem, the feasibility of employing far-field interaction within the nanoparticle array to spectrally narrow resonance is investigated in chapter 5 by optimizing the array periodicity and introducing thin waveguiding layers. Finally, the concluding chapter 6 is dedicated to a full assembly of a Lab-on-a-chip (LOC) LSPR biosensor, starting with interfacing plasmonic substrates with compatible active microfluidic networks, allowing the precise sample delivery and multiplexing. The prototype device consisting of 8 individual sensors is presented with typical modes of operation. The bulk refractive index determination of various samples demonstrates the working principle of such device. Finally, various strategies of biorecognition layer formation are discussed within the on-going research.

Sorriano, Claire. Thesis, Dijon, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012DIJOS066/document.

Full text
Abstract:
In literature, localized corrosion of aluminum alloys has been qualitatively related to the role of microstructure, intermetallic phases (IM) in particular, which induces sensitization to localized corrosion of aluminum alloys containing copper, for example. But modeling effort is needed to go further in the development of new testing methods. The objective of this work is to study and model on very simplified metallurgical systems, the effects of coupling between chemical and electrochemical reactions that are not taken into account in the analysis of conventional tests. The damage induced by the microstructural corrosion initiation has been numerically simulated by resolution, by the finite element method, of the Nernst-Planck equation describing the mass transport phenomena and reactions of chemical species in solution.Behavior in non-chlorinated medium of three combinations where the couple IM (cathode) / Al matrix (anode) has been assumed to be close from a Copper / Aluminium couple has been studied, mimicking the selective dissolution of S or θ phases present in copper alloys leading to a surface copper enrichment. Validation of the model "AlOH3" defined in this study, was based on the measurement of the corrosion rate of the anode for the three model systems which were tested. In terms of mechanisms, the comparison of the experimental results of the numerical simulation clearly highlights that the initiation of the dissolution of the anode requires a change in the local pH, and therefore the local depassivation of the surface aluminum by a chemical effect is the triggering element of the electrical coupling. To transfer this numerical approach to an industrial application and simulate successively, the initiation and the propagation of intergranular corrosion, it remains, for initiation to introduce the effects of interaction between phases and for propagation to build, from this numerical model, a robust model in confined and deaerated environment which must comply with the rules imposed by the physical size of the system as defined by the grain boundary

Full text
Abstract:
In Barcelona postpornography works as a system of bodily enunciation guided towards the production of critical and specific knowledge that in a sense is personal and collective. Postpornography exhibits, intervenes and articulates standardized and closed cultural codes using sexuality and the body as its main tools. This thesis includes a theoretical review about pornography in Western culture. It analyzes different approaches to sexuality and its representation: the ways in which sexuality has been constructed, how it has been referred to and how it has been regulated. In this sense, visual representation becomes relevant along with medicinal and legal institutions, and beauty and technology industries. The canon established by the mainstream pornography of the 70’s opens a discussion divided into two opposing tendencies in the feminism of the 80’s: the abolitionist movement and the pro-sex feminism. These tendencies open up critical approaches about gender and sex constructions. Queer feminism of the 90’s also question the construction of sex, gender and sexuality. The thesis reviews the term of queer, its definitions and criticism. This term is connected to the idea of performativity, an enunciation device that has the ability to perform what it names. Performativity works as a resource for sexual dissident practices carry out by postporn activism in Barcelona. Queer feminism coincides with the beginning of new communication technologies. The Internet has influenced not only the production and distribution of pornography but also has made possible the creation of alternative projects such as the queerporn and the postpornography. The thesis recovers the precedents of the sexual dissidence, feminism and lesbian movements in the history of Barcelona and Spain. It reviews some landmarks of Barcelona between 2001 and 2010 related to the postporn scene. It analizes some assumptions about postpornography, its tensions and conflicts. As a system of bodily enunciation, postpornography uses a specific way of communication which is in first person. This system of enunciation is located between different worlds where language becomes a space of resistance to adversity such as “the belly of the beast”, the official speech of science and the hierarchy of experts. Diverse strategies of enunciation and methodologies have influenced this research. Postpornography is also discussed as a methodology in itself. Finally, the thesis proposes an approach to postporn from a particular historical moment and my personal experience in Barcelona. From 2006 to 2008, my first observations about postpornography gave place to three main themes: 1) The relationship between migration, racism, colonialism and postporn in Barcelona allows to reflect upon the idea of accessibility and universality; 2) The relationship between postporn and open source technologies as a model of action and deconstructive work. The relationship between sex-gender codes and programming as well postporn practices and hacking; 3) The negative politics born from postpornography in Barcelona. The work that conveys error and failure is understood as an ethical position that emerges from certain damaged and injury. In this sense, postporn practices allow to rethink the official construction of sexuality, body and its representation from the mistakes and failures of the norm. This research brings together information, proposals, actions and methodologies and aims to register a period of Barcelona and its transfeminist politics of representation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractUrbanization is one of the major social changes in developing regions. This has influenced urban food insecurity and malnutrition in South Africa where poverty, unemployment and high food prices are dominant and influencing dietary change. The study considered dietary diversities and food security of households in four peri-urban settlements in South Africa through household surveys with 314 randomly selected households. Dietary diversity was generally low with high levels of food insecurity across the peri-urban sites, with male-headed households generally worse off than female-headed households. There was high dependence on food purchasing in all sites, although female-headed households were more likely than male-headed households to supplement food purchases with other food strategies such as urban agriculture, collection from open spaces and receiving donations. Food insecurity was associated with high poverty levels, unemployment and low education levels. A coherent response that effectively addresses food and nutrition insecurity challenges in peri-urban areas is an important component in addressing food insecurity in peri-urban settings of South Africa. Such a response should support localized and diverse “context specific” food systems which are sustainable and healthier and make food more affordable.

Abstract:
Abstract In order to compensate formation pressure and maintain oil production, a carbonate oilfield in the Middle East adopts water flood development. The injected water exhibits the feature of high salinity and high content of chloride, high content of H2S, and high content of scaling ion. As a result, severe corrosion perforation and plugging were encountered in less than two years, which seriously affects the normal water injection and production of the oilfield. This paper aims to find out the main controlling factors and co-evolution law of corrosion and scaling, and propose the prevention strategy. The composition of the scale samples is firstly analyzed by combustion method, XRD and atomic absorption spectrometry, and then the main controlling factors of corrosion and scaling are experimentally clarified. On this basis, immersion experiments at different times are further carried out to reveal the evolution of corrosion and scaling in injectors at different depths. The results show that temperature, salinity (mainly Cl-), total sulfur content, and sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) are the main factors controlling corrosion and scaling, and there is a synergistic effect among them. Temperature and sulfide have a promoting effect on uniform corrosion and scaling, while the salinity in the range of 110g/L-180g/L has an inhibition effect, but has a promoting effect on localized corrosion under deposits; a small amount of SRB can still propagate rapidly under deposits, aggravating the localized corrosion. Along the wellbore profile from top to bottom, the uniform corrosion rate and scaling amount increase but the localized corrosion rate decreases, which indicates that the high risk of localized corrosion perforation in the middle and upper part of the wellbore, as compared to the lower part. It is consistent with the actual corrosion perforation law of water injection wells. The co-evolution mechanism of corrosion and scaling is a synergistic process of three factors: lower uniform corrosion rate under high salinity + sulfide-induced local corrosion initiation + SRB enrichment under deposits and acidification autocatalysis due to Cl- migration. Finally, corrosion and scale control measures were taken by deep desulfurization and adding corrosion inhibitor. This work provides useful practical experience for preventing corrosion and scale formation of high salinity injector in carbonate oilfield.

Abstract:
Abstract The existing constitutive models of composite were usually built on the relation between the phase-average stress and strain, as treated in monolithic materials. In the present work, however, it was found that the averaged characteristic of the phase material, in which the plastic damage occurs, is quite different from that of the monolithic material. And the morphology of the non-uniform local properties remarkably gives effects on the global property of the composite. In order to model the local phenomenon in composite, a statistical distribution function was proposed to describe the local stress and the local plasticity. Furthermore by applying Localized Rigidity Method (LRM), which was proposed by the authors, a mixture law to estimate the percentage of the local plastic damage regions is developed. A numerical calculation was performed to investigate the nonlinear phenomena of the composite with the meso-localized plasticity, and the high performance of the present model was verified.

Abstract:
A method for the estimation of creep induced strains and stresses at notches has been developed. The purpose of the method is to generate a solution for the time-dependent strain and stress at the notch root based on the linear-elastic stress state, the constitutive law, and the material creep model. The proposed solution is an extension of Neuber’s rule used for the case of time-independent plasticity. The method was derived for both localized and non-localized creep in a notched body. Predictions were compared with finite element data and good agreement was obtained for various geometrical and material configurations in plane stress conditions.

Abstract:
We study the nonlinear dynamics of damage evolution under periodic loading using a new numerical approach based on the method of averaging. The algorithm can reduce the computational time required for multiscale life-cycle simulations by many orders of magnitude. We use the algorithm to study a previously-developed finite element multiscale continuum damage model, and derive an approximate autonomous rate law for the damage elements. This permits us to efficiently study space-time failure statistics using large ensembles of simulations starting from random initial damage states. The algorithm derivation and simulations illustrate how increased dynamical brittleness reduces the need for higher-order damage terms in the rate laws. We show how localized initial damage gives rise to low-dimensional autonomous rate laws: the geometry of the resulting averaged damage phase space can be used understand the likelihood of different failure modes.

Abstract:
An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is an abnormal, localized enlargement of the aorta. If untreated, a AAA will continue to enlarge in size and eventually rupture. Currently, AAA diameter is used as the principal indicator of impending rupture. However, this method it is not totally reliable. In an effort to improve the estimation of rupture risk, some researchers are currently studying the mechanical wall stresses of AAAs using patient-specific medical imaging techniques and finite element modeling [1,2]. The accuracy of these models depends significantly on the constitutive law used to describe the mechanical properties of the AAA tissue. To date, only isotropic constitutive laws have been used in these models.

Abstract:
A coupled electrochemical reaction and diffusion model has been developed and verified for investigation of mass transport processes in Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) anode triple-phase boundary (TPB) regions. The coupled model utilizes a two-dimensional (2D), multi-species Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) to model the diffusion process. The electrochemical model is coupled through localized flux boundary conditions and is a function of applied activation overpotential and the localized hydrogen and water mole fractions. This model is designed so that the effects of the anode microstructure within TPB regions can be examined in detail. Results are provided for the independent validation of the electrochemical and diffusion sub-models, as well as for the coupled model. An analysis on a single closed pore is completed and validated with a Fick's law solution. A competition between the electrochemical reaction rate and the rate of mass transfer is observed to be dependent on inlet hydrogen mole fraction. The developed model is presented such that future studies on SOFC anode microstructures can be completed.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Objective. To update findings from previous Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)- and American Urological Association (AUA) funded reviews evaluating therapies for clinically localized prostate cancer (CLPC). Sources. Bibliographic databases (2013–January 2020); ClinicalTrials.gov; systematic reviews Methods. Controlled studies of CLPC treatments with duration ≥5 years for mortality and metastases and ≥1 year for quality of life and harms. One investigator rated risk of bias (RoB), extracted data, and assessed certainty of evidence; a second checked accuracy. We analyzed English-language studies with low or medium RoB. We incorporated findings from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) identified in the prior reviews if new RCTs provided information on the same intervention comparison. Results. We identified 67 eligible references; 17 were unique RCTs. Among clinically rather than prostate specific antigen (PSA) detected CLPC, Watchful Waiting (WW) may increase mortality and metastases versus Radical Prostatectomy (RP) at 20+ years. Urinary and erectile dysfunction were lower with WW versus RP. WW’s effect on mortality may vary by tumor risk and age but not by race, health status, comorbidities, or PSA. Active Monitoring (AM) probably results in little to no difference in mortality in PSA detected CLPC versus RP or external beam radiation (EBR) plus Androgen Deprivation (AD) regardless of tumor risk. Metastases were slightly higher with AM. Harms were greater with RP than AM and mixed between EBR plus AD versus AM. 3D-conformal EBR and AD plus low-dose-rate brachytherapy (BT) provided a small reduction in all-cause mortality versus three dimensional conformal EBR and AD but little to no difference on metastases. EBR plus AD versus EBR alone may result in a small reduction in mortality and metastases in higher risk disease but may increase sexual harms. EBR plus neoadjuvant AD versus EBR plus concurrent AD may result in little to no difference in mortality and genitourinary toxicity. Conventionally fractionated EBR versus ultrahypofractionated EBR may result in little to no difference in mortality and metastases and urinary and bowel toxicity. Active Surveillance may result in fewer harms than photodynamic therapy and laparoscopic RP may result in more harms than robotic-assisted RP. Little information exists on other treatments. No studies assessed provider or hospital factors of RP comparative effectiveness. Conclusions. RP reduces mortality versus WW in clinically detected CLPC but causes more harms. Effectiveness may be limited to younger men or to those with intermediate risk disease and requires many years to occur. AM results in little to no mortality difference versus RP or EBR plus AD. EBR plus AD reduces mortality versus EBR alone in higher risk CLPC but may worsen sexual function. Adding low-dose-rate BT to 3D-conformal EBR and AD may reduce mortality in higher risk CLPC. RCTs in PSA-detected and MRI staged CLPC are needed.
