Abstract:

Visual motion carries information about the dynamics of ascene. Automatic interpretation of this information isimportant when designing computer systems forvisualnavigation, surveillance, human-computer interaction, browsingof video databases and other growing applications.

In this thesis, we address the issue of motionrepresentation for the purpose of detecting and recognizingmotion patterns in video sequences. We localize the motion inspace and time and propose to use local spatio-temporal imagefeatures as primitives when representing and recognizingmotions. To detect such features, we propose to maximize ameasure of local variation of the image function over space andtime and show that such a method detects meaningful events inimage sequences. Due to its local nature, the proposed methodavoids the in.uence of global variations in the scene andovercomes the need for spatial segmentation and tracking priorto motion recognition. These properties are shown to be highlyuseful when recognizing human actions in complexscen es.

Variations in scale and in relative motions of the cameramay strongly in.uence the structure of image sequences andtherefore the performance of recognition schemes. To addressthis problem, we develop a theory of local spatio-temporaladaptation and show that this approach provides invariance whenanalyzing image sequences under scaling and velocitytransformations. To obtain discriminative representations ofmotion patterns, we also develop several types of motiondescriptors and use them for classifying and matching localfeatures in image sequences. An extensive evaluation of thisapproach is performed and results in the context of the problemof human action recognition are presented. I

n summary, this thesis provides the following contributions:(i) it introduces the notion of local features in space-timeand demonstrates the successful application of such featuresfor motion interpretation; (ii) it presents a theory and anevaluation of methods for local adaptation with respect toscale and velocity transformations in image sequences and (iii)it presents and evaluates a set of local motion descriptors, which in combination with methods for feature detection andfeature adaptation allow for robust recognition of humanactions in complexs cenes with cluttered and non-stationarybackgrounds as well as camera motion.

Lo, Tsz-Wai Rachel. "Feature extraction for range image interpretation using local topology statistics." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2009. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/557/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents an approach for interpreting range images of known subject matter, such as the human face, based on the extraction and matching of local features from the images. In recent years, approaches to interpret two-dimensional (2D) images based on local feature extraction have advanced greatly, for example, systems such as Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) can detect and describe the local features in the 2D images effectively. With the aid of rapidly advancing three-dimensional (3D) imaging technology, in particular, the advent of commercially available surface scanning systems based on photogrammetry, image representation has been able to extend into the third dimension. Moreover, range images confer a number of advantages over conventional 2D images, for instance, the properties of being invariant to lighting, pose and viewpoint changes. As a result, an attempt has been made in this work to establish how best to represent the local range surface with a feature descriptor, thereby developing a matching system that takes advantages of the third dimension present in the range images and casting this in the framework of an existing scale and rotational invariance recognition technology: SIFT. By exploring the statistical representations of the local variation, it is possible to represent and match range images of human faces. This can be achieved by extracting unique mathematical keys known as feature descriptors, from the various automatically generated stable keypoint locations of the range images, thereby capturing the local information of the distributions of the mixes of surface types and their orientations simultaneously. Keypoints are generated through scale-space approach, where the (x,y) location and the appropriate scale (sigma) are detected. In order to achieve invariance to in-plane viewpoint rotational changes, a consistent canonical orientation is assigned to each keypoint and the sampling patch is rotated to this canonical orientation. The mixes of surface types, derived using the shape index, and the image gradient orientations are extracted from each sampling patch by placing nine overlapping Gaussian sub-regions over the measurement aperture. Each of the nine regions is overlapped by one standard deviation in order to minimise the occurrence of spatial aliasing during the sampling stages and to provide a better continuity within the descriptor. Moreover, surface normals can be computed from each of the keypoint location, allowing the local 3D pose to be estimated and corrected within the feature descriptors since the orientations in which the images were captured are unknown a priori. As a result, the formulated feature descriptors have strong discriminative power and are stable to rotational changes.

SHELL, PAUL RICHARD. "LOCAL IMPLEMENTATION AND INTERPRETATION OF ARIZONA BILINGUAL EDUCATION STATUTES AND POLICIES." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/183787.

Full text
Abstract:
The study investigated the degree of compliance of selected Arizona public school districts with a set of state statutes which placed a limit on the amount bilingual education services a district could provide to students. The existing literature on implementation and compliance suggested that several conditions might influence districts to implement programs of instruction which would be at variance with the state laws. The study used questionnaires to gather program data from 40 school districts in southeastern Arizona. These questionnaires were screened to determine those districts offering programs of instructions which exceeded the restrictions of state law. Six such districts were found. Interviews were conducted with program administrators in each district to determine the explanations for noncompliance. An interview was also obtained with an Arizona Department of Education official to determine the role of the state regarding the bilingual statutes. Information obtained from the interviews revealed that several of the programs had been established under federal pressure to provide equal educational opportunity to limited-English-proficient children. These programs had existed long before these state statutes were put into effect in 1981. Data also indicated that the state statutes lacked enforcement mechanisms. The state agency responsible for those programs received no mandate to monitor districts or to enforce state restrictions. Also, this agency was federally-funded with a primary loyalty to federal priorities to keep programs in operation and with a service rather than an enforcement orientation toward local districts. No enforcement of the restrictions found in the 1981 bilingual statutes took place. Furthermore, administrative regulations for the 1981 statutes were formulated which permitted programs of instruction exceeding state limitations to continue. In 1984 new bilingual statutes were put into effect which removed the restrictions of the old statutes. The new statutes are discussed from the historical perspective of the earlier statutes.

Tivy, Mary. "THE LOCAL HISTORY MUSEUM IN ONTARIO 1851-1985: AN INTELLECTUAL HISTORY." Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/2821.

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the changing model of the local history museum in Ontario, Canada and the consequential changing interpretations of the past in these institutions.

Beginning in 1879, local history museums in Ontario developed largely from the energies of local historical societies bent on collecting the past. While science museums used taxonomy and classification to mirror the natural state of the world, history museums had no equivalent framework for organizing collections as real-world referents. Often organized without apparent design, by the early 20th century a deductive method was used to categorize and display history collections into functional groups based on manufacture and use.

By the mid-twentieth century an inductive approach for interpreting collections in exhibits was promoted to make these objects more meaningful and interesting to museum visitors, and to justify their collection. This approach relied on the recontextualization of the object through two methods: text-based, narrative exhibits; and verisimilitude, the recreation of the historical environment in which the artifact would have been originally used. These exhibit practices became part of the syllabus of history museum work as it professionalized during the mid-twentieth century, almost a full century after the science museum. In Ontario, recontextualizing artifacts eventually dominated the process of recreating the past at museums. Objects were consigned to placement within textual storylines in order to impart accurate meaning. At its most elaborate, artifacts were recontextualized into houses, and buildings into villages, wherein the public could fully immerse themselves in a tableau of the past. Throughout this process, the dynamic of recontextualization to enhance visitor experience subtlety shifted the historical artifact from its previous position in the museum as an autonomous relic of the past, to one subordinate to context.

Although presented as absolute, the narratives and reconstructions formed by these collecting and exhibiting practices were contingent on a multitude of shifting factors, such as accepted museum practice, physical, economic and human resources available to the museum operation, and prevailing beliefs about the past and community identity. This thesis exposes the wider field of museum practice in Ontario community history museums over a century while the case study of Doon Pioneer Village shows in detail the conditional qualities of historical reconstruction in museum exhibits and historical restoration.

Abstract:
This thesis offers an interpretation of the life and work of Karl Rahner with the specific purpose of introducing and recommending him as an important source for contemporary initiatives in spiritual formation. The guiding notion through which this thesis is developed is that of a perceived ‘spirituality of silence’. This notion is explored and developed with reference to Rahner’s biography, his Ignatian spiritual roots, his first and most widely read book of prayers and his theologies of mystery, word and sacrament. Finally, the thesis facilitates an extended discussion between the dimensions of ‘spirituality of silence in Rahner’ and the contemporary spirituality of Western culture and the place and role of the church. An extended version of this summary is offered in the introductory section of the thesis proper.

Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation investigates the medical drama series as a television phenomenon which foregrounds the body as central narrative device. By considering House M.D. and Jozi H as global and local manifestations of this genre, transnational, spatial and metafictional categorisations of the body are traced to reveal its nature as social spectacle, and meaningbearing corporeal text. The body and its concomitant identities are exposed as continually and continuously screened inside, outside and, moreover, in relation to the hospital. As an institutional space, the hospital is (re)positioned in national and transnational discourses as nexus for personal and public, individual and societal, as well as local and global truths about the body (politic). Michel Foucault’s understanding of the human body, its position as part of the larger body politic, and its control by the state is employed to foreground the bio-political classification of the (ab)normal body. Both the hospital, as space for healing, controlling and containing the body, as well as the body, as a corporeal and a psychic space itself, are signified as heterotopic spaces: part of, but also outside other places and bodies.

Shi, Xinxiang. "Diplomatic immunities ratione materiae under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations : towards a coherent interpretation." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/33152.

Full text
Abstract:
Rules of diplomatic immunity, which nowadays are enshrined in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, play an important role in interstate diplomacy because they ensure the efficient performance of diplomatic functions. This thesis investigates a particular form of diplomatic immunity - diplomatic immunity ratione materiae. Unlike diplomatic immunity ratione personae, which pertains to the personal status of a diplomatic agent, diplomatic immunity ratione materiae depends in essence on the official nature of a particular act In practice, however, the determination of diplomatic immunity ratione materiae may meet with many conceptual and practical difficulties. For one, it is not always easy to distinguish the official acts of a diplomatic agent, who represents the sending State in the receiving State, from his or her private acts. In case of disagreement between the two States, questions may also arise as to who has the authority to make a final determination. The Vienna Convention does not offer much guidance on these issues; on the contrary, the Convention complicates them by employing, without adequate explanation, distinct formulas for different kinds of diplomatic immunity ratione materiae. This thesis examines these formulas in detail. On a general level, it is submitted that diplomatic immunity ratione materiae for certain types of activity constitutes not only a procedural bar to court proceedings but also a substantive exemption of individual responsibility. More specifically, it is argued that each formula must be understood in the light of the rationale behind immunity, the type of immunity concerned, and the specific functions or duties performed. In case of controversy, weight should be given to the opinion of the sending State, although the authority to make a decision lies ultimately with the court of the receiving State.

Abstract:
This thesis studies the transfer of disability targets in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to the local level in Sweden and how this implementation contributes to the Agenda’s result on a global scale. In the summary of its final official report to the Swedish Government (SOU 2019:13), the Swedish Delegation for the 2030 Agenda states that the expression ‘sustainable development’ is applied in Sweden in two ways: while it is used witha focus on its environmental dimension, there is another, broader definition that also encompasses its social and economic dimensions. In its own terms, the Delegation consistently adheres to the broader definition, in accordance with the meaning of the 2030 Agenda (SOU 2019:13, p. 27). Rather than concentrating on the more amply researched and documented environmental dimension, this thesis highlights a social and economic dimension of the Agenda’s local implementation, bearing in mind the Agenda’s pledge that no one willbe left behind. It examines how those among the 169 targets dealing with the interests of people with disabilities are transposed down to the local level and implemented. The conclusion points at the fact that, although all goals seem understood as indivisible at each level, results may uncover a big difference in how they are implemented and/or measured inpractice, at each of the political-administrative levels involved, which makes it difficult to produce data on quantifiable progress on a specific target.

Abstract:
This thesis begins by examining an unexplored contextual background for sixteenth century local maps. It argues that the architectural drawing techniques developed by master masons in the late twelfth century continued to be taught to the King’s masons well into the sixteenth, and that these drawing techniques lie behind the innovations in sixteenth century topographical mapping. Having provided a history of the craft skills that were adapted to make sixteenth century local maps this thesis moves on to consider why masons adapted craft skills traditionally used in full scale drawings on stone and plaster surfaces to make small, paper maps in the sixteenth century. It examines the way in which sixteenth century local maps were used and argues that the changing demands of patrons put pressure on master masons to alter the way in which local maps portrayed their subjects. The surviving archival evidence suggests that Henry VIII was the principle patron of local maps and my research examines the influence of the king over the shifting form of the map. It uses the letters and drawings sent between Henry VIII and his craftsmen to examine the decisive changes that Henry VIII made to the nature of the relationship between patron and builder, and the consequent effects of these changes over the forms of the image used to communicate between them. My argument suggests that Henry employs and promotes the craftsmen whose drawings allow him the greatest level of design control over the works he finances and that through this system maps and plans rapidly advance to include the technical drawing techniques which had, during the Middle Ages, been used exclusively among masons as on-site, working drawings. This thesis focuses attention on the technical aspects of map making, examining the material skills used to construct Henrician local maps and arguing that sixteenth centry local maps need to be related back to the craft skills of an older tradition of masonic drawing. It also suggests that map historians needs to look more closely at the correspondence sent between the king and his craftsmen and it argues this archival evidence provides a new contextual background with which to understand the changing forms of the Henrican local map.

Abstract:
Understand the local dynamics of proteins in their native state, i.e. in their folded functionalstructure, is a prerequisite to understand their global dynamics and their biological function. In thepresent thesis, we investigated the local dynamics of several small proteins by recording thefluctuations of local probes along the amino-acid sequence of those proteins. We tried tounderstand the dynamics of the local probe, i.e. how they relax between their differentconformations, how their fluctuations are correlated to each other, how their fluctuations arerelated to the function of the proteins. In the first three chapters, we introduced the concepts of the free rotational Brownian motion, of the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy and of the Molecular Dynamics (MD)simulations. In chapters 4 and 5, we studied the dynamics of the backbone amide bonds of theproteins on their free-energy landscape. In chapter 4, we demonstrated that the fluctuations of the backbone amide bonds of the protein VA3 are described by a rotational anomalous diffusion rather than by a free rotationaldiffusion, as often assumed in the interpretation of the raw NMR-measured data (Spin relaxation(SR) data and Residual Dipolar Coupling (RDC) data. [...] In chapter 5, we demonstrated the anomalous diffusion of backbone amide bonds up to 100 ns by using ten MD trajectories of 1 μs of duration for the protein ubiquitin. We also studied the convergence of the NMR-derived parameters extracted from the MD trajectories in function of their duration. [...] In chapter 6, we addressed the question of the correlation between the motions of the side chains and main chain of a protein. [...] In the first part of the final chapter of the present thesis, we investigated the evolution of the correlation between the side-chain and the main-chain motions of a protein during unfolding/folding events. In this preliminary work, we used a single MD simulation of the ultrafast folder Trp-cage performed at 380 K. We confirmed the results found for proteins in theirnative state. We observed an increase of the correlation between the two time series yn(t) and δn(t) during an unfolding event characterized, here, by the exit of the TRP residue of its “cage”.A steric parameter s was also defined in order to quantify interactions of the amino-acid side chainwith its environment. In a second part of the last chapter, we present a preliminary study of theunfolding of the downhill folder gpW under a mechanical force. To characterized the unfolding ofgpW, we computed the chemical shift of the Cª and of the Hⁿ atoms along the amino-acidsequence of the protein in function of a reaction coordinate: the distance, rCªCª , between the Cª atoms of the N and C terminal residues. We demonstrated that it is hard to distinguish a typical behavior of all the chemical shift of all the residues along the amino-acid sequence in function of the distance rCªCª . However, by averaging the chemical shift over all the residues of the protein we found that the evolution of the average value of the chemical shift described the unfolding eventsof the protein during the MD simulations

Abstract:

American author Kate Chopin (1850-1904) is known for writing many short stories located in the state of Louisiana, which display a representation of local particularities. In several of her stories, Chopin focuses on Cajun culture and proposes a fictional representation of the language of that community (Cajun language) through the speech of the characters, as in "No baile Acadiano". Divided into three chapters, this dissertation aims to investigate whether the issue of regionality, represented by marks of local culture and cultural identity of the characters, influences in the maintenance of expressions in French and Cajun language in the translation process of the short story "At the 'Cadian Ball" into Portuguese: "No baile Acadiano". The research showed that there was influence of cultural issues and regionalities on the translation of the story because the use of language conveys social information, aspect that was exemplified during the code-switching process among characters, depending on the interlocutor. So, it is noticeable that the translator's attitude (Denise Mariné) can be considered as respectful in relation to the author and to linguistic aspects that would be lost if such sentences and/or expressions/phraseologisms were translated into Portuguese.

Abstract:
An area of Shetland is examined in order to identify how Iron Age settlements might have related to each other. The study area contains two brochs. An inter-disciplinary approach is used to identify evidence for other Iron Age settlements and the information is presented as a model illustrating the pattern of settlement at different points during the Iron Age. A distinction is drawn between locations containing field archaeology and locations where occupation is predicted on the basis of evidence such as soil quality or place name. The whole model is then examined in order to identify patterns which may suggest changing relationships between settlements and groups of settlements, and the trends and influences behind these. Next an appraisal is made of the settlements¿ relative status and authority during Shetland¿s Early, Middle and Late Iron Age. By looking at the whole landscape through time - before, during and after the Iron Age ¿ the brochs are set in a wider chronological context which takes into account the changing role that these highly visible monuments may have played as socio-economic focal points in a developing landscape. The outcome reveals complexity. Initially the brochs appear to be a focus of settlement patterns but by the end of the Late Iron Age they are rivalled by a non-broch area which shows signs of heightened Pictish influence. Elsewhere in Shetland at this period there is retrenchment to broch-settlements, raising the question of how far developments in the study area are unique to that location.

Next an appraisal is made of the settlements' relative status and authority during Shetland's Early, Middle and Late Iron Age. By looking at the whole landscape through time - before, during and after the Iron Age - the brochs are set in a wider chronological context which takes into account the changing role that these highly visible monuments may have played as socio-economic focal points in a developing landscape.

Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the use of reference frames (absolute, relative, intrinsic) and secondary local deixes (‘in front of’, ‘behind’, ‘to the right / left of’) by German, English, Italian, and Polish native speakers to describe static spatial relations. Two experiments per language were carried out. The first experiment investigated side assignment. Participants saw the object from the front (the canonical position) and the back (the noncanonical position). The results confirm that for side assignments to a canonical positioned vis-à-vis object most speakers of the four languages use the outside perspective. However, some variations occurred for Polish and Italian, especially while identifying the right and left sides showing significant differences between German and Italian. Using mouse tracking, I tested the interpretation of static spatial relations of two kinds of complexity. The simple spatial relations included either extrinsic or intrinsic reference objects (animate; inanimate) and a bottle as localized object. The complex spatial relations were supplemented by an agent and embedded by indirect speech. This allows the investigation of origo shift. In all situations, participants were asked to describe the location of the bottle. German and Italian showed significant differences in interpreting simple animate and inanimate intrinsic relations. Interpreting the intrinsic complex relations, Polish speakers shifted the origo to the agent most frequently and described the relations from his point of view. All in all, for the complex relations, the choice of the intrinsic reference frame decreased significantly compared to the simple relations. That is, most participants shifted the origo to agents’ point of view and interpreted the spatial relations applying the reflection strategy.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to implement a qualitative analysis on interpretive trails, which are also considered part of local heritage interpretation. This analysis verifies if the authors of panels used recommendations published in two known methodologies during their preparation phase. This research is applied on eighteen interpretive trails in the protected landscape area of Český kras. In the practical part of this thesis, each interpretive trail has been evaluated by applying nine criteria. The outcome of the thesis is an evaluation of visuals and content composed on the interpretive trail panels for the purpose of attractive communication. The most significant deficiencies of the panels of interpretive trails in the protected landscape area of Český kras are quality of graphical design, whether the text communicates with the reader and if the text does not require linear reading. On the other hand, the most important strengths of interpretive trail panels are that the visual elements are always well connected to the content of the text on the panel and the text is easily read without specialised terms. The interpretive trail that has reached the best evaluation in the qualitative analysis is Vodácká NS Berounka. On the other hand, the trails with the lowest scores were NS Památné stromy Karlštejnska and NS Klonk-Suchomasty.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, I use the ethnographic case study of the United Arab Emirates to illustrate a much larger phenomenon that involves young women worldwide in the throes of identity negotiation at a time of accelerated global flows of information, foods, fashion, media images, fashions, health information, and health and self-enhancement products. My research utilizes ethnographic and anthropometric information as a means of investigating the ways in which these global flows are affecting the physical bodies, attitudes, behaviors, perceptions of self, and perceptions of community in a sample of young, female, Emiratis living in the UAE in the Arab Gulf in the twenty-first century. I employ biocultural methods and perspectives to examine bodies-as-products and bodies-as-projects in this cohort, focusing on health, beauty, and self-presentation projects. I also focus on the uncertainty and accompanying psychosocial stress that these women are subject to as a result of juggling globalized, "modern" opportunities and lifestyles on the one hand with local expectations and regulations on the other. Key to these analyses is the acknowledgment of the synergy between biology and culture, and the effects of both local and global factors on this synergy.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis examines issues of cultural identity and modernity, and the anthropology of spirituality and sacred sites by conducting ethnographic research on fairy beliefs in contemporary Ireland. Irish folk belief has traditionally identified a spirit world intertwined with our own which is inhabited by spirits, often collectively referred to as fairies. Belief in these spirits was once widespread. My research sought to determine the prevalence of these traditional beliefs among modern Irish people within my research area, as well as differences in belief across variables including age, gender, and religious preference. I conducted eight weeks of ethnographic fieldwork during June-August 2008 in and around Sligo Town in County Sligo, Ireland. I selected County Sligo as a research site because it is a sparsely populated, largely rural area, identified in an earlier major study of Irish folklore as a region where belief in the Irish spirit world persisted more strongly than in other parts of the country. My primary research methodology was to conduct structured and unstructured interviews, complemented by visual site surveys. In the preparation of this thesis I utilized data from 52 Sligo residents plus ten other visitors to the area from surrounding Irish counties. While my research suggests that few Sligo residents from the project area continue to believe in the literal existence of fairies, it also shows a much more common belief in a "power" associated with sites identified as "fairy forts," which are natural features of the landscape or the remains of ancient burials or dwellings apocryphally endowed by folk tradition with supernatural or mysterious energies. These beliefs led to a taboo against intruding on, altering, or destroying these "forts" that is still very much alive today. Additionally I was able to discuss at length the subject of the Irish death-herald spirit called the banshee (bean sidhe) with several study participants. Although it can be classified under the umbrella label of "fairy", my research indicates that the banshee is seen as a stand-apart element of Irish tradition by research area residents, and is believed in by those who do not otherwise profess a belief in "fairies" in general.

Sorensen, Bjarne. "The form and use of social capital among foreign direct investors in their interactions with locals in Northern Laos." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2015. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/1762.

Full text
Abstract:
The research conducted for this thesis is in the area of international business; it has focused on the emerging market of Laos – and it has in particular sought to identify the form and use of social capital in the northern part of the country. This thesis will present the rationale behind the research, the planning that took place before the fieldwork commenced, and most importantly the findings of the study. Social capital is a sociological concept that since the early 1990s has gained significant recognition in the literature. While the benefits to holders of economic capital is commonly recognised – the literature argues that other forms of capital exist that, similar to economic capital, can be viewed as an asset that enables holders to reach desired outcomes. At the core of this thesis is the idea that individuals and businesses are embedded in social capital relationships and networks structures - and that these can be viewed as a resource, or strategic asset, which can be cultivated and used to improve business performance. The benefits of social capital are particularly profound in Asian contexts, where social and exchange relationships have been documented to provide the basis for most business dealings, and where the performance of businesses has been found to correlate with their ability to build and maintain durable networks. Basically, the Western idea of single firms operating autonomously has in the Asian context been proven inadequate; in Asia business success is about relations, social capital, and strategic partnerships. Consequently, it is important for Western businesses expanding into the Asian region to learn and understand how social capital can supplement economic capital in the pursuit of desired outcomes (i.e. returns in the market place). While research has been conducted into social capital in different Asian countries, in particular China, Japan and South Korea, this research has gone beyond the present understanding of social capital by focusing on the Lao context. The study has contributed to the social capital and international business literature – and it will provide investors in Laos with practical guidelines on how to access the resource social capital represents. Considering the unique circumstances of conducting research in one of the last frontiers of the world – a research design was required that could accommodate the flexibility needed in this new territory. For that reason a structured-case methodology, with an interpretive approach, was chosen for this research (as this method is particularly suited for theory that is in its early formative stages). Three case studies, conducted over four fieldtrips, were completed for the study into the phenomenon of Lao social capital. The structured case methodology is basically an improvement on traditional case study methods that ensures validity through clear links between the research questions, the data collected, and the ultimate conclusions. Furthermore, triangulation enhanced the trustworthiness of the ultimate findings by examining the phenomenon of Lao social capital from many angles; having the same story emerge from a number of cases, respondents, and data sources added to the robustness of conclusions made. Respondents were carefully selected based on the contribution to theory development they were deemed likely to make. A combination of judgment and snowball sampling was used to identify suitable respondents (given the sensitive nature of social capital this personalised sampling technique enhanced respondents comfort with the research). Respondents were selected from the expatriate community and included a broad range of nationalities (and Lao respondents were included in the study when they formed part of the business networks of the foreign respondents). During the research it became clear that the importance of social capital for business operations in Laos should not be underestimated. This was emphasised by all respondents involved in the research. In Laos it is not so much about what is in the contract; it is about what is in the relationship. When developed with reputable people, social capital can be viewed as a strategic investment that helps facilitate economic returns in the marketplace. Social capital was found to assist holders to get things done in all aspects of business; to access needed resources and information; to develop local knowhow and expertise; to navigate legal and institutional voids; to gain access to decision-makers; and to form strategic and durable exchange relationships with committed and reliable partners. Lao social capital can basically be viewed as an arrangement that enables holders to pull all the right strings. Lao social capital represents a relationship based around structures (e.g. bonding, bridging and linking) and social norms (e.g. face preservation, trust, reciprocity, and obligatory principles). While bonding social capital was found to be of strong importance among locals – bridging social capital was found to be of particular importance for foreign investors (as they have little networks or social capital upon their initial arrival in the country). Although linking social capital was found to provide substantial benefits (e.g. by speeding up bureaucratic processes) – linking social capital was found to be used less widely among foreign direct investors. Actors operating businesses in grey areas of legislation, or in industries traditionally controlled by the government, were found to have the greatest need for linking social capital. During the research a number of avenues were identified, which can make the transition from an outsider to an insider take form. The most commonly cited methods include social interactions (ideally with powerful actors), patience and relationship building, repeated business, favour exchanges (and return of these when received), trustworthy operations, humour, intermediaries, as well as modesty and a genuine interest in Lao people and culture. Face, or na, in the form of reputation and goodwill was found to positively influence all aspect of social capital development. Basically, people with abundant face found it easier to bridge the gap into new networks, to access the resource social capital represent, and to reach desired outcomes in business (and life). During the research it was documented that the distinctive version of social capital that exist in Laos, evolved the way it did to enable people to deal with a set of conditions that has influenced and transformed Lao society. Circumstances that influenced the evolution of Lao social capital include uncertainty and rapid changes, collectivism, high power distance, and limited legal infrastructure.

Full text
Abstract:
Performance requirements act as policy instruments for achieving broadly-defined economic and developmental objectives of States, especially industrial and technological development objectives. Many States consider that performance requirements distort trade and investment flows, negatively impact global and national welfare and disrupt investment decisions compared to business-as-usual scenarios. As a result, a number of States have committed to prohibiting performance requirements in international investment agreements (“IIAs.”). Performance requirement prohibitions (“PRPs”) are meant to eliminate trade-distorting performance requirements and performance requirements which replace investor decision-making by State decision-making. This thesis focuses on providing answers to two research questions: first, how do States prohibit performance requirements in IIAs? And second, how should PRPs in IIAs be interpreted and applied? For the first time, this thesis: proposes a comprehensive understanding of PRPs in IIAs by drawing notably on the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (“GATT”) Uruguay Round of negotiations and on the United States Bilateral Investment Treaty (“BIT”) Programme; develops a detailed typology and analysis of PRPs in IIAs through the identification of systematically reproduced drafting patterns; conducts the first critical and in-depth analysis of all arbitral awards which have decided claims based on PRPs in IIAs; analyses interpretation and application issues related to provisions that exempt government procurement from PRPs and to reservations that shield sensitive non-conforming measures or strategically important sectors from PRPs; and anticipates the application of most-favoured nation (“MFN”) treatment clauses to PRPs in the future. Finally, this thesis formulates proposals that can help interpret and apply existing PRPs and draft future PRPs in a more deliberate and informed way.

In Mallorca, sea breeze presents prototypical characteristics. It is so consistent that its effectiveness allows for easy common as well as scientifc verification. Daytime breezes operate simultaneously from different coasts, and penetrate inland. Its centripetal nature causes wind convergences in certain inland areas, where summer rainfall tend to focus. The agricultural area has historically made with massive territorial deployment of cereal production infrastructure, mainly threshing floors, the main factor of its location being the quantity of the wind resources available. These are small circular spaces that can be interpreted in relation to climate. A synthetic chart of threshing floors and a methodology designed to indirectly determine the dominant wind directions at each site have been developed, based on their geo-referencing by photo-interpretation of the ortho-photographs of 1956. The resulting anemographic model fits nicely with the main features of the sea breezes identifed by the theoretical-experimental and numerical simulations already tested.

Because of the historical opportunity that camphor tree roots were carved into marketable wood products, the local industry of wood carving has lasted for a century. Nowadays, the transformation of wood carving industry was promoted by the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum which further made the "Sanyi wood carving" stepping on the international stage. From rotten wood decorations, wood carvings to the conversion of wood carvings, cultural representations of wood carving affect the practices of the local community in different aspects. In this study, the exhibition in the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum and the culture of Sanyi wood carving were interpreted in the local context from the anthropologist Clifford Geertz''s theoretical perspective by museum ethnographic research. Within the web of meaning constructed by the interaction of Sanyi wood carving, the museum exhibition and artisans, the local knowledge in the museum exhibition was reinterpreted from the native ways of knowing in cultural logic systems. The significance of museum collections can be further clarified within the cultural context. Through interpreting the exhibition in the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum, the study pointed out that the changes in the style of sculptures exhibited according to the historical context were not just made by the market transformation. Instead, the interpretation of the style of sculptures was shaped diachronically by the substantial tradition and the interaction between the guidance artisans and the wood sculptures.

After many years of development and improvement of Amis' traditional craft have stagnated. Some of traditional craft arts have even experienced the cultural faults and fraction.Through the reinvigoration, the inheritors have pieced together the technology and culture of the craft in the broken information and memory. In the post-colonial society and the globalized environment, the development after the revitalization is inevitably mixed with the knowledge and technology of other cultures. How do these factors affect the cultural context and identity transformation of the Amis’ traditional craft; in order to make traditional crafts and modern society In order to find the use value of modern life, innovation is an inevitable development path, and which way can balance tradition and innovation, which is the part of this research. In this study, four Amis' traditional techniques were discussed as bark cloth, Amis pottery, rattan, and weaving. Using case study method to collect data and conduct interviews, analyze the content of interviews with Grounded Theory, sort out the development process of inheritors from inheritance to innovation, and then use Amis pottery as a classic case to compare and analyze the records of past literature and explore the process. The transformation of culture. Finally, based on the Hybridity and innovative theory, the paper summarizes the methods of hybridization and the types of innovation, and finds the attitudes to be maintained in innovation and the mode of constructing innovative practices. The study found that the inheritors have different levels of innovative behavior at different levels, innovation affects the transformation of identity, and identity also affects the degree of innovation development, because the inheritors will shape themselves in the process of inheritance. The subjective consciousness and spiritual principle of craft culture, that is, the individual's craft culture identity, some innovative means will not be accepted within the identity, and some will be encouraged. The innovative development of traditional crafts is not like the modern economic products. It can be developed without restrictions. The traditional crafts have their own appearance and style, and they can maintain the subjective consciousness and not be eroded by other cultures.

During the phase, the researcher was responsible for the effectiveness evaluation of the interpretation tour planning in the light of the Healey’s theory of collaborative planning in terms of knowledge resources, relational resources and mobilization capacity. The second phase was about ‘tour guide exercises’ based on the previous planning and practiced by the local community intrerpretors with help of the facilitator team. The researcher was in charge of analyzing interpretation qualities of the local community interpreters in the light of Ham’s four interpretive qualities, i.e. enjoyable, relevant, organized as well as with a theme. The results show that the community interpreters residents were good at knowledge on resources (Kr) while the interpretation opportunity (IO), an appropriate technique (AT) and the audience knowledge (Ka) could be enhanced by the facilitator team. The local community interpreter were particularly praised by tourists in terms of two qualities: enjoyable and with a theme. Besides, the family groups of tourists were more interesting in following the local interpreters from start to finish. The elder people showed more appreciation of the Molisaka’s cultural heritages and stories. The tourist participants in general did not concern too much about the weaknesses of the local community interpreters’ skills. Community interpreters of the Molisaka should enhance their strength as a living local story teller. A facilitator can help local interpreters to orginse and practice a tourist guide tour. However, professional interpretation training may not suitable for them. Individual-specific life experience gave each interpreter an unique characteristics. Local people have their suitable ways and capacities of telling local stories to tourists. The impressions of tourist participants were generally more about emotional aspects rather than local knowledge learning.

Hidayat, Muhammad Syamsu. "Decentralisation and local health discretion: pursuing the hazy path between local initiatives and central policies." Thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/109820.

Abstract:
Introduction: Decentralisation is a process of devolving roles and authorities from a central or national administration to local, subnational or regional unit for various purposes, from economics, political or pragmatic reasons. In Indonesia, decentralisation aimed to increase local responsiveness and efficiency in public services, particularly health. However, more than a decade after decentralisation implementation its impact on Indonesia’s health status remains unclear. Some health indicators, such as maternal and infant mortality rates, have shown significant improvement in recent years, but there are also signs of setback in other indicators such as contraception use and mother and child vaccination. These observations prompted questions of how decentralisation policy was interpreted and implemented at the local level, what factors influence policy implementation and what has been the role of central government in interpretation and implementation of the policy. This study explored local discretion in decision making processes, an aspect of decentralisation that has been largely been overlooked in the literature. Methods: Using a purposive sampling process, qualitative information on local interpretation and implementation of decentralisation policy was obtained from thirty local stakeholders across eight districts. These stakeholders included representatives of the local executive, legislature and technical offices. Districts were carefully selected to represent variations that may influence policy implementation, such as Java and non-Java, affluent and less affluent and urban and rural districts. Districts were also selected with consideration of interviewer accessibility and familiarity. In order to explore decentralisation in-depth interviews were performed using an open-ended questionnaire to provide direction but at the same time give local stakeholders flexibility to express their story. There were four foci of discussion: local health planning, local health financing, local health program implementation and program evaluation. Data was organised using the framework approach and later analysed using an interpretive technique. Results and Discussion: The central government intended decentralisation to increase local responsiveness and efficiency by devolving the power to plan, finance and implement public services to local governments. However, in reality the relationship was never straightforward. The process of planning, financing and implementing public services, besides being determined by local fiscal ability and technical capacity, was also influenced by a number of other factors such as local commitment, local actors’ interpretation and interest, central policy and negotiation between local and central governments. As a result, instead of incorporating responsiveness or efficiency, recognised local health programs reflect the negotiation between these potentially opposing factors. Thus, compromise was often the result of decentralisation at the local level. A particular example of this negotiation was development of the local health coverage program, or Jamkesda. This program was the result of a combination of central government inability to provide a program of universal coverage, public demand for free health services, local politicians’ response to demand and support of local resources. A free health service has always had strong appeal for both the public and local politicians. However, as local fiscal ability varies, the extent of coverage offered by each district varied widely. This distinctiveness has been used by local politicians to strengthen and support local identity, especially with the fading and sometimes irrelevant influence of traditional allegiances in some districts. These allegiances, such as ethnicity and historical solidarity were once the major force in shaping local identity, but now such influences tend to be weakening. The void has been filled among other things by local government programs. Local politicians found Jamkesda to be a more effective local identification as it has a more direct and tangible benefit for the local public than other traditional bonds. Implementation of decentralisation in Indonesia was often portrayed within the context of the dominant role of central government. Standardisation of health services, stratified government planning and national health programs, such as jamkesmas and jampersal, are prominent central government policies that have had considerable influence on local health policy. The national policy has at times collided with local interest that has required local government to find the most suitable solution that balances both central and local interests. One such example was the moratorium on government civil servant recruitment that was applied nationally. Even though the central government formally exempted health personnel from the policy, nevertheless in practice respondents from across the districts were prevented from recruiting health personnel as government civil servants during the moratorium. Some districts defied this policy by employing new health workers on time-limited contracts. Indonesian health decision making is not all top down. Reciprocally, local government can influence central government policy. An example is the decision of a particular district to open a classless hospital, thereby meeting strong central disapproval. After countless discussions a compromise was reached, not for a classless hospital, but for an all-third class hospital with a higher standard of care. These examples illustrate that the decentralisation process has been a dynamic and vibrant process. This study shows that decentralisation has been moving towards greater central government involvement in local affairs, including in the health sector. In Javanese cultural values the central government has become the personification of father (bapak) that has the responsibility to nurture, direct, and at the same time limit, local power for the sake of national objectives such as stability and public welfare. Local discretions and initiatives are supported but only within the framework of central government policies and interests. Nonetheless, room for negotiation and ‘local defiance’ has at times been tolerated. In conclusion, decentralisation in Indonesia has been a reflection of the national value of kekeluargaan that emphasise on uniformity rather than keragaman, or diversity. Therefore, decentralisation initiated as devolution of power with a clear distribution of power between central and local governments has become more akin to power-sharing where the power of central and local governments is increasingly fused and less specified.

Abstract:
This dissertation is an amalgam of reformulated essays on artists who had connections with 20-21st century KwaZulu-Natal: They appeared in exhibition catalogues that accompanied the exhibitions; The Azaria Mbatha Retrospective, 1998, The Trevor Makhoba Memorial, 2005 and Cyprian Mpho Shilakoe Revisited, 2006. Chapter 1, the introduction; outlines the chapters, gives the theoretical and broader theoretical framework, history of the region and art therein, literature survey and methodology. Central to the theoretical framework is an attempt to meld the original essays into a coherent whole; by expanding the interpretation of indigenous cultural world-view to include the concept of orality versus literate cultures. Even in the transformation to literacy with westernization and Christianity the African oral mind-set is still operative; thus for instance the early Zulu writers like R.R.R. Dhlomo rendered the Zulu kings‘ oral praise-poems into written form and these became set-works for Zulu schools up until the 1994 new dispensation. Also dealt with are related issues of what therefore constitutes 'Africanness‘ and debates whether it is but the invention of the west in need of the 'Other‘ (something arguably pertinent to the art-collector‘s reasons for collecting), or if there is that own to the African style, like the oral style, which can be termed a 'legitimate Africanness‘ if one will. Further, how this style then exhibits itself in the visual arts as a 'preferred form‘ in terms of medium, colour, patterning and favored technique which best conspire to express these qualities. Chapter 2 (essay 1) and chapter 3 (essay 2), carry forward the assumptions made in the introduction. In modern times the oral genre has developed into an exciting style; namely the development of urban, often migrant musical forms, like isicathimiya, that challenge politics, social-wrongs, racism and taboos. It is argued that an artist like Trevor Makhoba can be considered a social commentator and 'master of the oral genre‘ in that he rendered this style into visual form. Certain of Makhoba‘s works depicting white females and black males are analyzed in this light and it is suggested that the oral genre also draws upon both stereotypical and universal archetypal imagery. Chapter 3 (essay 2) considers Azaria Mbatha‘s use of the older oral story-telling mode, rendered in linocut medium as an echo of earlier indigenous wooden 'pokerwork‘ panels, to transmit a political message in line with concepts of African Christianity, itself a syncretism of the Christian message with African world-view. This allegory was needed in a time where the Nationalist Government would have made open insurrection impossible. Chapter 4 (essay 3) concerns ex-Rorke‘s Drift art-student Cyprian Shilakoe. I analyze his aquatints in the light of his own Sotho cultural ideas on contagion and the ancestors for deeper meaning. The fact of culture change is accepted and mention is made of the artist‘s friend and fellow student, Dan Rakgoathe‘s melding of western esoteric mysticism, like Rosicrucianism, into African thinking and how far this impacted on the more traditional Shilakoe‘s works. The essays are followed by Chapter 5, the conclusion, which serves to come to some resolution. This is then followed by the bibliography.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines leadership and management competencies of Southern Baptist mega-church executive pastors. The study discusses the issue of limited research on the position of the executive pastor. Resources related to this position are cited. Possible reasons for the emergence of this position are examined including the minister's dilemma of being both shepherd and administrator and the issue of leadership training as preparation for the pastorate. Also provided is a theological and philosophical foundation for the leadership and management practices. Servant leadership as the biblical foundation for leadership and secular leadership models appropriate for church administration are reviewed. Research findings on ministerial effectiveness and the minister as manager are included. The available research on the role of the executive pastor is analyzed to reveal the practices posited in current literature. The methodological design is based on the 1988 research of Stephen Boersma. This study identifies and analyzes the self evaluated importance of leadership and management competencies. Demographic data and professional experience are studied to identify relationships between the executive pastors' response and his background. The analysis of findings presents the raw data, displays and statistical analysis. A description of how the raw data was compiled and an evaluation of the research design is provided. The analysis relates to the demographic data of the population, the rank order of the importance ratings, a comparative analysis of this study's findings with the finds of the Boersma study, an analysis of the demographic characteristics that are predictors of the importance ratings and a brief study of the findings related to the subjects' self-reported job satisfaction, performance and preparation in the role of the executive pastor. This research contends that there are certain leadership and management competencies necessary for the management and administration of the church. The executive pastor will employ these practices as foundational to the position. There is also a relationship of demographic characteristics to the importance rating. Finally, pastors and executive pastors tend to agree on the importance of these competencies.

Despite sustained efforts to implement Local Economic Development (LED) in South Africa, this has not met with the success that was hoped for. In part, this stems from the diverse conceptualizations and interpretations of LED. The research report sought to interrogate these diverse interpretations and meanings with the objective of establishing the impact that such ‘differences’ might have on the policy and actual implementation of LED in rural and urban municipalities in South Africa. To achieve this objective, the project utilized a qualitative survey, focusing on the cases of the urban-based UMhlathuze Local Municipality and the ruralbased Richmond Local Municipality. The study found that the diverse global and national ‘differences’ surrounding LED discourse have impacted significantly on how LED policies and strategies are implemented in South Africa. This includes a significant level of confusion regarding the most suitable implementation strategy. The study concludes that consensus on the definition of LED and the theoretical framework that informs LED should be reached within the South African policy context.

Democracy as experienced in Taiwan is oftentimes discussed as a reference to interpreting political futures of the Mainland China. However, China insists in defining and developing her own path leading to democracy. This study examines how two news programs, the national CCTV’s Across the Strait and a provincial TV’s Haixia Xinganxian, represent and interpret Taiwan’s presidential elections held in 2012 and 2016. In addition, how sensitive political issues are framed is examined as well. The result shows that these programs construct four distinguished news frames in building up negative images of Taiwan’s election: conflict game, chaos, politician-focused, attitude towards unification-independence and economic issue. It clearly reveals that the Mainland China has been covering and commenting on Taiwan’s democracy by her own criteria of democratic values, while in the meantime twisting Taiwan’s democratic experiences and those of the West to meet China’s own understanding of democracy theories.

In Thailand's diverse museum ecosystem, there are national museums attached to the official system, as well as local government or privately-established buildings, each of which interacts with the community based on its own power to interpret culture. Among the museums affiliated with the country, the narrative is still influenced by the central government. The national pavilion system can be divided into two categories—the “Bangkok regional premises” belonging to the “Office of National Museums” and the “Local Arts and Culture Department”. The National Museum of Foreign Affairs under the jurisdiction of the Regional Offices of Fine Arts, such as the National Chiang Mai Museum in Chiang Mai, is the latter. Local governments, in collaboration with private institutions or academic organizations, have developed cultural relics with local expositions, such as the Chiang Mai City Arts & Cultural Centre, located in the ancient city of Chiang Mai. The relevant Klangwiang Chiang Mai Museum Partnership is also available. As the second largest city outside Central Bangkok, Chiang Mai has different cultural heritage and identity with the central region because of its geographical, cultural and historical factors. It is represented by the Lanna dynasty and its related cultural influence. Go deep into today's northern regions. In addition to the historical traces of the ancient dynasty, the Lanna culture also covers the daily life of the people of the North in terms of diet, clothing, religion, festivals, language, etc. It can be said that Lanna culture has made the North of today and has become an important recognition of local culture. This study chose to observe the two museums of the National Museum of Chiang Mai and the Chiang Mai Art and Culture Center. It analyzes the display narratives of the two museums on the "Lanna Culture", how to construct Lanna's cultural interpretation and how to interact with the local through the display rights.

Taiwan’s cultural heritage conservation policy has gradually shifting its approach to establish the community-based holistic mechanism of linkage among the people of local community and cultural heritage involved both the tangible and the intangible. Ministry of Culture promoted actively “Community-based Cultural Heritage Environment Conservation and Revitalization Plan” since 2006 could be considered as a manifestation of this policy shift. The Yilan County Government has been awarded the sponsorship from this competitive project to preserve and revitalize Toucheng and Lize historic districts due to its unique execution idea and strategy. This research, through participant observation, will explore the ideas and strategies in revitalizing these two historic districts. Toucheng and Lize historic districts not only preserve tangible cultural heritage as artifacts and old buildings but also intangible cultural heritage as variety of traditional customs, belief, industries and crafts; furthermore, there are numerous characters with moving stories. Therefore, the revitalization strategies of these two historic districts can be concluded as follows. The first is to rediscover the cultural heritage in these two historic districts from the point of view of local people to consolidate community’s identity to cultural heritage conservation. The second is to recreate new and tradition-based spaces and events by creatively interpreting the rediscovered cultural heritage, and to integrate these renew old buildings and cultural activity into contemporary community’s life and cultural tourism.

Abstract:
In the present century the rural Heritage tends to a lower utilization by the society, increasingly more urban. The globalization, the cities exponencial growth and the gradual hightening rural exodus has been causing the desertification of the rural spaces. Otherwise the local economies mainly from agriculture production do not have many ways to stand out for themselves as a source of income or a social stimulus of the rural spaces subsequently leading to a society whose time passage has left its mark. One of the strategies refering to the responsability and priority to the new architects and technicians, should start by the understanding and acknowladgement in detail of this realities plus finding an eficient line of action for the rural spaces and for the cultural and social roles they play in society. The sustainable development and the value of the rural space are fundamental assumptions to the present work, that consists on the development of executable projects which have in comon to reach assumptions as learning the heritage value and the knowledge of the rural society, the companies and services of conservation and rehabilitation, the traditional knowledge of the old school masters in addition to the architecture students as volunteers who acomplished the projects developed by the main team on a mutual learning experience and learning when it comes to construction, traditional tecniques and finally the contact and blend between the habitants lifestyle and the ones who intervine. In fact it is between this rural ambience and the active participation that the Final Masters Step matches the Terra Amada Iniciative.Folowing that it is expected that the village choosen for this year,Vale de Papas, in the municipality of Cinfães will have a particular place of reflection where stories are told, the lifestyles and traditional techniques promoting an effective development in the village , a number of interventions relating to this stage, which will be meeting places for local people. The iniciative and its interventions go beyond the local meaning, it may even reach other villages of the municipality and the district. This type of interventions do not intend to “modernize” the local society but instead to represent the best they have, the knowledge and popular wisdom. This is what Terra Amada Iniciative is about beyond a set of interventions is also a social, economic, professional, cultural and tourism tool.

The landscape of James A. Garfield’s Mentor, Ohio home (now preserved at James A. Garfield National Historic Site) contains multiple layers of historical meanings and values. The landscape as portrayed in political biographies, political cartoons, and other ephemera during Garfield’s 1880 presidential campaign reveals the existence of the dual cultural values of agrarian tradition and agricultural progress in the late nineteenth century. Although Garfield did not depend on farming exclusively for his livelihood, he, like many agriculturalists of this era participated in a process of mediation between these dual values. The function of the landscape of Garfield’s farm between 1876 and 1880 is a reflection of this process of mediation. After President Garfield’s assassination in 1881, his wife and children returned to their Mentor home. Between 1885 and c. 1905, Garfield’s widow Lucretia made numerous changes to the agricultural landscape, facilitating the evolution of the home from farm to country estate. Despite the rich history of this landscape, its cultural complexity and evolution over time makes it difficult to interpret for public audiences. Additionally, the landscape is currently interpreted exclusively through indoor museum exhibits and outdoor wayside panels, two formats with severe limitations. I propose the integration of deep mapping into interpretation at James A. Garfield National historic site in order to more effectively represent the multi-layered qualities of its historic landscape.
