Abstract:
This thesis explores ideas about the changing nature of work and general social change. It does this by examining the global call centre industry. The call centre industry serves as a case study within which ideas about globalization and the lived experience of it can be explored. The thesis explored the work and non work lives of those involved with the industry in the North East of England and the Indian subcontinent. The research made extensive use of qualitative interverviews.

Hamdouni, Alami Yazid. Montpellier 3, 1989. http://www.theses.fr/1989MON30011.

Full text
Abstract:
The commune, which is a recent administrative creation, is instituted in order to destroy the ancient tribal organization. The communal transplantation is thus to be noticed in a double social and historical process : on the one hand, a process of unification of a way of live, a new kind of the individual, indeed the appearance of the citizen in the mpdern conception of the word. On the other hand, a process of "distructure"-"restructure" as a tool to achieve the policy of development decided by the state. However, as a territorial unity and an agent of local development, the commune doesn't thoroughly neglect ancestral ethnic borders and even pleases the local traditional group of notables. It thus emphasizes a political will of continuity and makes one wonder about the real effect of decentralization. To clarify these continuities or and these ruptures, these evolutions and the appearance of a new citizen in a rural world which "is going out" of its tribal system, the example of el hajeb area is particularly significant by its central geographic situation in the heart of morocco, the existence of twomain tribal confederations (the beni m'tirs and the guerrouanes), the juxtaposition of distinct soils (jbel, dir, azaghar), etc. .

Abstract:
When the Uniting Church formed in 1977, its Basis of Union envisaged a final reconciliation and renewal for all creation, not just humans. It did, nonetheless, reflect the anthropocentric assumptions of its day, as did other official documents released in the first decade of the Uniting Church’s life. Anthropocentrism assumes that human beings alone are created in the image of God, charged with dominion over Earth, and responsible for the fallenness of creation, though not necessarily through the actions of a literal Adam and Eve. This basic framework did not shift in the first decade, even though Earth began to be talked about not as an inanimate resource for human consumption, but something good and valuable in and of itself. In 1990 this anthropocentric paradigm began to be challenged, and during 2000-2002 two quite irreconcilable understandings of the relationship between God and Earth, and thus humans and other animals existed side by side in Uniting Church worship resources. Having listened carefully to the story of life as told by ecological and evolutionary scientists, I conclude that the traditional anthropocentric paradigm is no longer tenable. Instead I propose that all of life is the image of God, in its evolutionary past, ecological present and unknown future. All of life is in direct relationship with God, and exercises dominion of Earth. Evidence traditionally used as evidence of the fallenness of creation is instead affirmed as an essential part of life, though life on Earth has experienced a number of significant “falls” in biodiversity. Even the more biocentric thought in recent Uniting Church resources is inadequate, because its language implies that life is simple, static, benign, and to some extent designed by God. In order to be adequately consonant with the life sciences, theology must be able to accept that finitude (pain, suffering and death) is a good part of creation, for without it there could be no life. This is an emphasis of ecofeminism, which I extend to affirm not only individual death, but the extinction of whole species, including humans. I argue that the purpose of creation was not the evolution of humans, but to make possible God’s desire for richness of experience, primarily mediated through relationships. Whilst this idea is well established in process theology, it must be purged of its individualistic and consciousness-centric biases to be adequately consonant with the scientific story of life. The resulting biocentric paradigm has several implications for our understanding of Jesus. I argue that he offers salvation from the overwhelming fear of finitude, rather than finitude itself. Against the trend in ecotheology, I propose that this saving work is directed in the first instance to humans only. I tentatively propose that it is directed to only some humans. This, paradoxically, is more affirming of God’s relationship with the rest of creation than most ecotheology, which proclaims Jesus as a global or universal saviour. Salvation for some humans, and all non human creatures, happens only in a secondary sense, because this is the only sense in which they need saving. I then speculate on whether and how it might be possible for a Christian biocentric community to live out its salvation. Finally, I revisit the Basis of Union and argue that although the biocentric theology I have proposed goes well beyond the Basis, it is not at odds with the Basis’ directions and intentions. Biocentric theology is, rather, an extension of the trajectories already contained within the Basis, with its trust in the eventual reconciliation and renewal of all creation.

Abstract:

Nott, Derek J. "A qualitative investigation into practitioner perspectives of the role of customers within the design and delivery of local government contact centre services." Thesis, University of Chester, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10034/621225.

Abstract:
Local authorities have experienced significant cuts in income whilst grappling with increased demand, an aging population and welfare reform. This pressing imperative has driven local authorities to challenge their sense of self and in doing so consider the participative role that customers can and do play. This study sought to examine practitioner perspectives of customers, their role, impact and constraining and enabling factors within the design and delivery of local government contact centre services. There is limited empirical research on practitioner perspectives of the role of customers within a local government environment. There are multiple terms used to describe the concept of customer but an absence of established approaches to examine the role that customers play within socially constructed phenomenon within local government demonstrating a gap in current academic thought. Whilst the rationale for involving customers in local governance is debated, the application of theory in to practice is limited thereby further constraining the opportunity for local authorities to leverage potential benefits afforded through participative approaches to the design and delivery of contact centre services. An interpretivist stance was adopted with qualitative techniques employed within the research. Using a priori codes developed through the review of extant literature, thematic analysis of forty-four customer service strategies spanning single tier, upper tier and metropolitan local authorities was undertaken. Themes were further developed through analysis of transcripts from seventeen semistructured interviews with managers responsible for the design and delivery of local government contact centre services. This research highlighted the differing and often contradictory practitioner perceptions of the concept of customer and the role that customers play in the design and delivery of local government services. Whilst organisations espoused a desire to progress participative principles due to the potential benefits afforded through such approaches, the extent to which these were operationalised by practitioners was limited and this coupled with a perceived sense of passivity on the part of customers resulted in little or no positive impact on current service performance. As extant literature and research is limited on the role of customers within local government, this study expands current academic thought providing particular insight on the practitioner perspective. The research findings provide a robust foundation on which theorists and practitioners in particular can formulate participative strategies and associated policies thereby providing meaningful opportunities for customers to co-design and co-deliver local government services and through which potential benefits, financial and non-financial, can be realised.

Abstract:
Doctor Legum - LLD
South Africa continues to experience one of the highest crime rates in the world. Crime is unevenly distributed, and the police are not trusted by the majority of citizens. The power and responsibility for policing lies with the national government, through South Africa’s negotiated constitutional framework. Only a limited form of policing under local government, severely constrained by onerous requirements, is permitted in the legislative framework. Such centralisation of policing in federal states is theorised to be necessary to avoid partisan policing and armed separatism; to prevent local capture of police by local politicians; to ensure uniformity, equity and democratic change, and to ensure equitable outcomes; and to bring efficiencies of scale to policing.

Abstract:
This paper aims to understand the customer satisfaction between Mainland shoppers and Local Shoppers regarding the shopping centre in HK. It will be reviewed and analyzed based on shopping centre management theories. Apart from finding out the shopping behavior of mainland shoppers and Hong Kong shoppers, we would like to understand their customer satisfaction on different customer services aspects. Data was collected through questionnaire. Survey of two shopping centres were carried out to understand the customer satisfaction. In-depth study on the customer satisfaction between Mainlanders and Hong Kong people is then carried out. It was found that Mainland shoppers and local shoppers have different expectation in different customer services aspects. For example, Mainlander thinks that prices of the products in both shopping centre - Harbour City and Landmark North is reasonable. However, local shoppers think that the product in Landmark North is expensive. Also, the Mainland shoppers think that both the shopping centre provide a wide range of product for them. However, Hong Kong people expects the variety of product are not enough in both the shopping centre. On the other hand, they both appreciate the high customer service performance in Hong Kong. In conclusion, Hong Kong and Mainlander appreciate a wider range of shops in term of price, product category and exhibition. Shopping centre managers should provide a comfortable environment which could enhance the shopping experience of the customer.

Abstract:

Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/20499.

Full text
Abstract:

Branicki, Layla. "Joining-up Criminal Justice at the Local Level : The Case of the Warwickshire Justice Centre Programme." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2008. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/43521/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Auld Review found the different 'practices, procedures, management and cultures' that exist within the criminal justice system to be 'confusing, divisive and inefficient' (Auld, 2001, Justicefor All, 2002: 148). This research is concerned with this perceived problem of 'co-ordination and control' (Richards, 2001: 64) and as such looks to examine the implications ofcloser integration (joining-up) between criminal justice organisations at the local criminal justice area level. As the result of an ESRC collaborative studentship this thesis offers an examination ofthe first local criminal justice area to implement ajoined-up criminal justice approach predicated upon both co-location and integration. This research did not begin with the assumption that joined-up justice was a goal that was either practically deliverable or theoretically desirable and argues that citizens have a stake in not only the efficiency and effectiveness ofthe criminal justice process but in its fairness and integrity (Garland, 2001: 50; Moore, 2001: 41; Raine, 2005: 291). This research focused upon the Warwickshire Justice Centre Programme and utilised a single case study research strategy, an interpretive methodology and qualitative research methods. A tailored concePtual framework was developed to look at the unique case ofWarwickshire that built upon previous literature in the areas ofinnovation (and its links to improvement), integration and integrity (judicial independence). Data was collected over a 3 year period using a purposive sampling technique which aimed to include diversity in the sample whilst learning from key infonnants. Data collected included: 60 semi-structured interviews, 73 roving interviews, over 300 hours ofobservation, documentary analysis and short surveys completed by members ofthe public (n=75) and Warwickshire criminal justice staff (n=26). All interviews were recorded and transcribed, and data analysis took the form ofan interpretive thematic coding approach which included elements ofboth content analysis and grounded theory. The evidence within this research arguably supports a continued separation between criminal justice organisations for both reasons oforganisation (producing benefits from task specialisation and collaboration) and ofindependence (maintaining due process protections). It is argued that the tensions in the criminal justice system are generative and act to preserve judicial independence. There was however evidence found that in practice the gap between collaboration and collusion ('stitched up justice') was big enough that potential improvements from joining-up for criminal justice organisations, tax payers and users (including offenders) was a real prospect that Warwickshire at the end ofthis research was starting to demonstrate. This research offers a contribution by examining the idea of integration within a context that requires the maintenance ofintegrity to meet its wider aims. By bringing together theory about management, organisation, criminal justice and public law as partial explanations of aspe~ts ofthe joined-up criminal justice agenda this thesis aims to offer an account that explores the tensions between the pressures to integrate and the institutionalised value ofseparation within the context ofcontemporary criminal justice.

Barrett, Heather Joy. "Townscape change and local planning management in city centre conservation areas : the example of Birmingham and Bristol." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 1996. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/5411/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis considers townscape change and the operation of conservation policies within two city centre conservation areas in Birmingham and Bristol during the 1970s and 1980s. The study combines character assessment of the two areas, from an urban morphogenetic perspective, and micro-scale examination of local authority planning application data to consider the impact of conservation management. Utilising the concepts and terminology developed by M.R.G. Conzen for the analysis of the townscape, the study identifies distinct units of townscape within the conservation areas. The use of an historical basis for conservation area character exposes the arbitrary nature of many conservation area boundaries, enclosing clusters of listed buildings rather than coherent areas of townscape. This approach also exposes the static nature of area character assessments based on architecture alone. These assessments provide an inflexible basis for character preservation and enhancement, one which under-values minor commercial and industrial heritage. While the influence of national economic trends, planning policies and architectural fashions produced a similar trajectory of conservation policy development in both areas, important local differences existed. Differences in the local office market and the extent of building listing produced contrasts in the 'success' of conservation policies. The high percentage of listed buildings in Bristol produced greater success in policy development and application than in Birmingham, by providing greater access to grant funds and the strength to sustain refusals at appeal. Consequently, in Bristol, contextual styles were used exclusively for new building from the mid-1970s onwards, and redevelopment using façadism was limited. This also aided the development of landscaping and building enhancement schemes, helping to tackle the erosion of character through minor change. In Birmingham, amid a pro-business climate and with limited listing of the Victorian fabric, the transition to contextual styles was more muted and façadism remained a key option for new commercial development. These circumstances also delayed and limited the development of enhancement strategies until the mid-1980s. In the late-1980s, rising commercial pressures exposed the weaknesses of conservation control in both areas. Limitations to their character assessments reduced the ability of the two areas to resist trends towards universal historicist styles for new building, and the use of standard 'corporate-heritage' elements for building interiors and exteriors. The lack of extra control offered by area designation for the regulation of interior and functional change reduced the ability of the local authorities to monitor and control the micro-scale processes of change, leading to further character erosion.

Abstract:
The Municipal Centers of Social Action (MCSA), main tools implemented and used by municipalities in promoting solidary policies, is providing what is well known under the name of a "facultative assistance", regarding the traditional help of Departmental councils, the leader in this domain on their territories. In Besançon, since 1972, the MCSA is recognize as well advanced and innovative. However, in the last couple of years, the MCSA usage has declined and its influence has been increasing. In this context of doubt, the institution has made the wish to provide the framework for the analysis and an expertise expanding on the sociology of social policies. The nature of the working relationships within the internal organization (relationships between the team Management, relationships between the elected officials and the technicians…) and the external environment (Relationships with the City, the Department, and the whole partner’s assembly), raise the question about the status of the municipal intervention, regarding the prerogatives and the boundaries. Referring to Bisontin’s example, a general vision allows enlightening of the similarities and the contrasts of comparable structures. This study, approved by an "ICFR" (Industrial Convention of Formation by the Research), and laying on an interactional paradigm, allies at the same time technical approach and scientific point of view: it suggests practical recommendations and theoretical perspectives

Weber, Erwin. "Towards local cultures of sustainability : facilitating community created environment education centres through design." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2012. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/52771/1/Erwin_Weber_Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Ecological sustainability has been proposed to address the problem of human impacts increasingly degrading planetary resources and ecosystems, threatening biodiversity, eco-services and human survival. Ecological sustainability is an imperative, with Australia having one of the highest eco-footprints per person worldwide. While significant progress has been made via implementation of ecologically sustainable design in urban communities, relatively little has been undertaken in small, disparate regional communities in Australia. Regional communities are disadvantaged by rural economic decline associated with structural change and inequities of resource transfer. The ecologically sustainable solution is holistic, so all settlements need to be globally wise, richly biodiverse yet locally specific. As a regional solution to this global problem, this research offers the practical means by which a small regional community can contribute. It focuses on the design and implementation of a community centre and the fostering of transformative community learning through an integrated ‘learning community’ awareness of ecologically sustainable best practice. Lessons learned are documented by the participant researcher who as a designer, facilitator, local resident and social narrator has been deeply connected with the Tweed-Caldera region over a period since 1980. The collective action of the local community of Chillingham has been diligently recorded over a decade of design and development. Over this period, several positive elements emerged in terms of improvements to the natural and built environment, greater social cohesion and co-operative learning along with a shift towards a greener local economy. Behavioural changes in the community were noted as residents strived to embrace ecological ideals and reduce fossil fuel dependency. They found attractive local solutions to sourcing of food and using local employment opportunities to up skill their residents via transformative learning as a community in transition. Finally, the catalytic impact of external partnering has also been documented. How well the region as a whole has achieved its ecologically sustainable objectives is measured in terms of the delivered success of private and public partnering with the community, the creation of a community centre cum environment education centre, the restoration of local heritage buildings, the repair of riparian forests and improved water conditions in local river systems, better roads and road safety, local skills and knowledge transfer, support of local food and local/regional growers markets to attract tourists via the integrated trails network. In aggregate, each and every element contributes to a measure of eco-positive development for the built environment, its social organisation and its economy that has guided the local community to find its own pathway to sustainability. Within the Tweed-Caldera bioregion in northern New South Wales, there has been a lack of strategic planning, ecologically sustainable knowledge and facilities in isolated communities that could support the development of a local sustained green economy, provide a hub for socio-cultural activities and ecology based education. The first challenge in this research was to model a whole systems approach to eco-positive development in Chillingham, NSW, a small community where Nature and humanity know no specific boundary. The net result was the creation of a community environment education centre featuring best-affordable ecological practice and regionally distinctive, educational building form from a disused heritage building (cow bale). This development, implemented over a decade, resonated with the later regional wide programs that were linked in the Caldera region by the common purpose of extending the reach of local and state government assistance to regional NSW in economic transition coupled with sustainability. The lessons learned from these linked projects reveal that subsequent programs have been significantly easier to initiate, manage, develop and deliver results. In particular, pursuing collaborative networks with all levels of government and external private partners has been economically effective. Each community’s uniqueness has been celebrated and through drawing out these distinctions, has highlighted local vision, strategic planning, sense of belonging and connection of people with place. This step has significantly reduced the level of friction between communities that comes from natural competition for the finite pool of funds. Following the pilot Tweed-Caldera study, several other NSW regional communities are now undertaking a Community Economic Transition Program based on the processes, trials and positive experiences witnessed in the Tweed-Caldera region where it has been demonstrated that regional community transition programs can provide an opportunity to plan and implement effective long term strategies for sustainability, empowering communities to participate in eco-governance. This thesis includes the design and development of a framework for community created environment education centres to provide an equal access place for community to participate to meet their essential needs locally. An environment centre that facilitates community transition based on easily accessible environmental education, skills and infrastructure is necessary to develop local cultures of sustainability. This research draws upon the literatures of ecologically sustainable development, environmental education and community development in the context of regional community transition towards ‘strong sustainability’. The research approach adapted is best described as a four stage collaborative action research cycle where the participant researcher (me) has a significant involvement in the process to foster local cultures of sustainability by empowering its citizens to act locally and in doing so, become more self reliant and socially resilient. This research also draws upon the many fine working exemplars, such as the resilience of the Cuban people, the transition town initiative in Totnes, U.K. and the models of Australian Community Gardens, such as CERES (Melbourne) and Northey Street (Brisbane). The objectives of this study are to research and evaluate exemplars of ecologically sustainable environment education centres, to facilitate the design and development of an environment education centre created by a small regional community as an ecologically sustainable learning environment; to facilitate a framework for community transition based on environmental education, skills and infrastructure necessary to develop local cultures of sustainability. The research was undertaken as action research in the Tweed Caldera in Northern NSW. This involved the author as participant researcher, designer and volunteer in two interconnected initiatives: the Chillingham Community Centre development and the Caldera Economic Transition Program (CETP). Both initiatives involved a series of design-led participatory community workshops that were externally facilitated with the support of government agency partnerships, steering committees and local volunteers. Together the Caldera research programs involved communities participating in developing their own strategic planning process and outcomes. The Chillingham Community Centre was developed as a sustainable community centre/hub using a participatory design process. The Caldera Economic Transition Program (CETP) prioritised Caldera region projects: the Caldera farmer’s market; community gardens and community kitchens; community renewable energy systems and an integrated trails network. The significant findings were: the CETP projects were capable of moving towards an eco-positive design benchmark through transformative learning. Community transition to sustainability programs need to be underpinned by sustainability and environmental education based frameworks and practical on ground experience in local needs based projects through transformative learning. The actioned projects were successfully undertaken through community participation and teamwork. Ecological footprint surveys were undertaken to guide and assess the ongoing community transition process, however the paucity of responses needs to be revisited. The concept of ecologically sustainable development has been adopted internationally, however existing design and planning strategies do not assure future generations continued access to healthy natural life support systems. Sustainable design research has usually been urban focussed, with little attention paid to regional communities. This study seeks to redress this paucity through the design of ecologically sustainable (deep green) learning environments for small regional communities. Through a design-led process of environmental education, this study investigates how regional communities can be facilitated to model the principles of eco-positive development to support transition to local cultures of sustainability. This research shows how community transition processes and projects can incorporate sustainable community development as transformative learning through design. Regional community transition programs can provide an opportunity to plan long term strategies for sustainability, empowering people to participate in eco-governance. A framework is developed for a community created environment education centre to provide an equal access place for the local community to participate in implementing ways to meet their essential needs locally. A community environment education centre that facilitates community transition based on holistic environmental education, skills and infrastructure is necessary to develop local cultures of sustainability.

Abstract:
Purpose: This study aims to (1) describe and analyse the local ground operator’s role in the network of the Botswana tourism industry, (2) to investigate what factors characterize and influence their relationships with foreign tour operators, as well as (3) to provide implications for improving these relations. Methodology: This study has been conducted as a case study, where the empirical data was collected during a two months field trip to Botswana. A qualitative research method, and a deductive approach has been used. Five semi-structured interviews were conducted with ground operators to get their perspective of their own situation, and one with a person representing a governmental organisation. Most data was collected through the interviews, but participating observation also served as a source of information. The validity and reliability of the study has been enhanced by defining core concepts, interviewing several respondents, using an interview guide and recording most of the interviews. Results: Local ground operators play are crucial role in the network of Botswana’s tourism industry, as they are engaged in a high number of business relationships, are bringing the services at the destination together, and are connecting them to the tourists. They play a role as both customers and suppliers. Their relationship to tour operators abroad consists of a lot of resource ties, activity links as well as some actor bonds. Trust is found to be a very essential part of the relationship, and they perceive themselves as being dependent on the tour operators. Culture is not identified as a major influencing factor. As for managerial recommendations, a better communication in expectations and an increased adaptation of products and processes, to create customer dependence, are among the results advised.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to identify the principal factors associated with the burden of caregivers of patients with dementia. To date, the results of the literature do not clearly underline the specificity of the link between the Behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPS) and the burden of caregiver. This study aims then to study association between the BPS and the burden of caregiver, within the particularly framework of a Local Center of Information and Coordination (CLIC), touching a population alive mainly in residence in rural environment and far away from the expert centers. The evaluations were carried out in the residence of the patients. The BPS were evaluated by using the NPI among 100 patients with dementia. The burden of caregiver was evaluated by using the scale of burden of Zarit. The results of the linear regression analyses show a significant association between the total score obtained with the NPI and the score of burden. This association continues, even after the adjustment of this score with other known explanatory variables. In addition, the univaried analyses enabled us to highlight an association between almost all the BPS and the burden of caregiver. Distinct profiles of patient and caregiver are also defined. This study reinforces the idea of the need for a specific accompaniment of caregiver of patients with dementia. Within the framework of the CLIC, a pilot study thus could be initiated with an intervention structured near caregiver since April 2007. It is precisely centered on the taking into account of the strategies of adjustment facing BPS

Full text
Abstract:
Town centre management (TCM) as a practice-based concept has existed in the UK, North America and much of Western Europe for over twenty five years. TCM was first defined by Wells (1991, p. 24) in the academic literature as “a comprehensive response to competitive pressures, which involves development, management and promotion of both public and private areas within town centres, for the benefit of all concerned”. Yet, this concept has evolved considerably since its first inceptions in the 1980s as the public-private partnerships that manage high streets, districts, town centres, quarters and other place formats have themselves faced a period of unprecedented environmental and socio-economic changes in the matrix of our towns and cities. This DProf by Public Works project explores the author’s contribution to this evolving paradigm over a ten year period by advocating a global-local approach to the town centre management profession. Specific knowledge gaps addressed by the author over this period include the contribution of small and medium sized retailers to the vitality, diversity and viability of town centres in a number of European countries, a pan-European classification tool (typology) of town centre management schemes, the development of the UK’s first ever professional and academic qualifications in place management and the founding of the first-ever practice-based international interdisciplinary publication on the management of towns and cities – the Journal of Town and City Management. The author’s transformational learning experience over this period serves as a backdrop for reflection throughout. Finally, insights into the future of town centres are offered along with some of the key strategic challenges that the town centre management profession will need to address in the medium term in order to continue to thrive into the future.

Abstract:
We give a thorough account of the various equivalent notions for \sheaf" on a locale, namely the separated and complete presheaves, the local home- omorphisms, and the local sets, and to provide a new approach based on quantale modules whereby we see that sheaves can be identi¯ed with certain Hilbert modules in the sense of Paseka. This formulation provides us with an interesting category that has immediate meaningful relations to those of sheaves, local homeomorphisms and local sets. The concept of B-set (local set over the locale B) present in [3] is seen as a simetric idempotent matrix with entries on B, and a map of B-sets as de¯ned in [8] is shown to be also a matrix satisfying some conditions. This gives us useful tools that permit the algebraic manipulation of B-sets. The main result is to show that the existing notions of \sheaf" on a locale B are also equivalent to a new concept what we call a Hilbert module with an Hilbert base. These modules are the projective modules since they are the image of a free module by a idempotent automorphism On the ¯rst chapter, we recall some well known results about partially ordered sets and lattices. On chapter two we introduce the category of Sup-lattices, and the cate- gory of locales, Loc. We describe the adjunction between this category and the category Top of topological spaces whose restriction to spacial locales give us a duality between this category and the category of sober spaces. We ¯nish this chapter with the de¯nitions of module over a quantale and Hilbert Module. Chapter three concerns with various equivalent notions namely: sheaves of sets, local homeomorphisms and local sets (projection matrices with entries on a locale). We ¯nish giving a direct algebraic proof that each local set is isomorphic to a complete local set, whose rows correspond to the singletons. On chapter four we de¯ne B-locale, study open maps and local homeo- morphims. The main new result is on the ¯fth chapter where we de¯ne the Hilbert modules and Hilbert modules with an Hilbert and show this latter concept is equivalent to the previous notions of sheaf over a locale.

Abstract:
Churches face management challenges comparable with those in secular organizations, but with additional dimensions that include the primacy of religious purpose and an inherent concern that excessive managerial focus may inhibit this purpose. This research examined the influential levers – essentially, factors fully or partially within the control of leaders or managers at each level – used in the Salvation Army’s United Kingdom operations to help achieve local outcomes in accordance with its overall mission and objectives. Adopting a primarily phenomenological approach, the research used questionnaire surveys, semi-structured interviews and secondary statistical data to examine views and results at local, divisional and territorial levels, and to assess their implications. Primary data sources consisted of 23 local leaders and managers, 13 local volunteers or employees, 13 divisional or territorial officials, and 4 divisional commanders. The research confirmed the validity and relevance of the concept and (with minor qualifications) its posited components. Leadership was of particular importance, as was an internal spiritual climate. The research is expected to be of direct value to the Salvation Army in the United Kingdom, and potentially to the Salvation Army elsewhere. The concept of influential levers may also have indicative value to churches and other charities – particularly those with locally devolved activities – and to organizations generally.

ABSTRACT:This project focuses in the town of Pataias and has the goal of looking into the social, cultural and urban context of this place. The proposal, located in it’s intervention area, embodies the activities and the buildings already present, while taking into account the historical and geographical framework. For this proposal to comply with the pre-determined guidelines, it was required to understand some concepts, while understanding the way how culture influences society, introducing, in the intervention area, new preservation and appreciation methods. When a project aims to intervene in a small scale urban environment, the social development should be a priority, while also being necessary to observe, analise and catalog the information in a way to distinguish the collective identity component. With the principal concepts laid down, the local culture has ultimately had an influence int the projectual path chosen for this work. The intergenerational and multifunctional centre aims to give its inhabitants, and the broad public of Pataias, a place of culture, of study, of personal knowledge and collectivism.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine some after-school teachers’ perceptions about the outdoor stay at the after-school care centre in the schoolyard and in the leisure- environment. Five semi-structured interviews were conducted with the after-school teachers at five after-school care centres in the Stockholm area. In the theoretical part presents the leisure- governance and ongoing research on outdoor learning, research on the school playground and kindergarten local environment affects children in their development and learning, and after-school teachers’ professional identity. The theoretical foundation is based on the phenomenographic approach. The questions are: • What is outdoor education according to the after-school teachers? • According to after-school teachers, what educational opportunities are provided by the schoolyard and the local environment? • How do the after-school teachers use the schoolyard and local environment? The result shows that outdoor education can be a knowledge invigorating complement to the indoor teaching and a way for the after-school centre to supplement the compulsory schoolday. The play outdoors can help to increase children's social development, creativity and imagination. The after-school teachers used the schoolyard and local environment for various purposes which may be due to different circumstances, knowledge and experience to carry out educational activities outdoors. But it may also depend on whether the after-school teacher focuses on the regular school day or in the afternoon at the after-school care centre.

The increasing demand of higher data rates in datacenters has led tonew emerging standards (100 - 400G Ethernet and others) in wireline communications. These standards will favor more sophisticated encodings that use less frequency bandwidth. As speed requirements become more stringent, pure analog architectures can not meet them. So, a natural shift towards mixed-signal architectures is expected. This thesis proposes the design of an ADC-based receiver architecture. It uses a design methodology to define and validate the requirements and specifications for silicon-based wireline receivers that comply with >100Gb/s operation over transmission channels with high losses (>20dB). (cont.) Extensions to the core TOTEM model include a demand charge model, used for making daily optimal control decisions when the electric bill includes a charge based on the monthly maximum power draw. The problem of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) control is treated separately since it strongly violates TOTEM's linearity assumptions. Nonetheless, we describe a solution approach to the HVAC problem which operates in conjunction with TOTEM. We also provide an analysis of storage suitability in stochastic supply and demand networks. The node-based approach lends itself well to a software system that uses a drag- and-drop graphical network creation tool. We present a graphical user interface, the XML data representation, and the communication links to and from optimization software.
We develop an extensive yet tractable framework for analyzing and optimally controlling local energy networks. A local energy network is any set of generation, storage, and end-use devices existing to provide energy fulfillment to a building, a group of jointly operated buildings, or a village power system. The software developed is called TOTEM for Total Energy Management, and provides hourly (or sub-hourly) control over the flows in such energy networks. TOTEM manages multiple energy flows such as electricity, chilled water, heat, and steam together, since such energies are often coupled, particularly for networks containing cogeneration turbines (which produce electricity and steam) and absorption chillers (which use steam for driving refrigeration turbines). Due to the large number of interconnected devices in such networks, the model is kept as a linear mixed integer program, able to be solved rapidly with off-the-shelf mathematical optimization packages. Certain nonlinearities, for example input-output relationships for generators, are handled in this linear framework with piecewise linear approximations. Modeling flexibility is achieved by taking a node-centric approach. Each device in the network is represented as a node, and depending on each node's set membership, proper constraint and objective equations are written. Given the network, TOTEM uses hourly electricity and fuel pricing, weather, and demand projections to determine the optimal operating and scheduling strategy for the day, in both deterministic and stochastic settings. MIT's cogeneration plant is used as a case study, with other examples throughout the thesis demonstrate the use of TOTEM for assessing and controlling renewable resources, storage options, and

This is a Marketing Plan for the recovery of Solátia Shopping Center (Centro Comercial Solátia). To be able to do so a research has been made search is to try for solutions to some real problems, of "Centro Comercial Solátia", and to try to understand what are the best ways to proceed to get to this objective. 51 clients have been inquired. Since the 2000 decade this shopping center has been decaying. Main causes were the construction of big shoppings nearby, and economics crisis of decade 2000. These situations have contributed to reduction of volume of sales of existent shops or the closing of others. The research is exploratory. Its a mixed study, because is quantitive and qualitative. The techniques used to collect data was a questionnaire (in paper) and unstructured interviews. The most relevant conclusions of the research are that customers like this shopping center but would like to have more variety of shops and products and one attraction point. Some customers state that if these situations would occur they would go there more times, because the majority of them lives or works nearby. The purpose is positioning this shopping center as local shopping center, that offers a variety of products and services of quality and to create attractive conditions for costumers. This project helps to understand the importance of Marketing and Communication in this shopping center.

Substantial progress has been made in the estimation of sparse high dimensional precision matrices from scant datasets. This is important because precision matrices underpin common tasks such as regression, discriminant analysis, and portfolio optimization. However, few good algorithms for this task exist outside the space of L1 penalized optimization approaches like GLASSO. This thesis introduces LGM, a new algorithm for the estimation of sparse high dimensional precision matrices. Using the framework of probabilistic graphical models, the algorithm performs robust covariance estimation to generate potentials for small cliques and fuses the local structures to form a sparse yet globally robust model of the entire distribution. Identification of appropriate local structures is done through stochastic discrete optimization. The algorithm is implemented in Matlab and benchmarked against competitor algorithms for an array of synthetic datasets. Simulation results suggest that LGM may outperform GLASSO when model sparsity is especially important and when variables in the dataset belong to a number of closely related (if unknown) groups.

Abstract:
Following the economic downturn in the late 1990s the Government of Thailand restructured the economy resulting in rapid economic recovery. The society now needs developments to project it into the Information Age. This study is but one creative response to this need. To initiate the study, an extensively validated Questionnaire was implemented with a snowball sample comprising 500 representative, non-randomised respondents from the four provinces of the Inpeng Community Network (ICN). The purpose of the Questionnaire was to ascertain levels of information needs and local knowledge, and to identify ten local experts from ICN for subsequent In-depth Interviews. Data obtained in this way were analysed then classified into a retrievable form of knowledge. A model community information database system (CIDS) was then designed, installed and trialled with a convenience sample of 165 variously prepared respondents using computers in six CLC. Semi-structured Interviews then provided additional data on information needs and refinement of the model CIDS. Respondents saw this refined CIDS as having the potential to be emulated by other rural communities, and in particular, to be a valuable technological tool suitable for dissemination throughout ICN. Respondents believed that community development and empowerment would be enhanced by CIDS, enabling individual problems to be dealt with effectively, and sustainable development to be achieved.

Abstract:
This study describes how a larger investment by a private company in the northern interior can affect a municipality’s economy. The mobility to the municipality is expected to increase and some of the direct and indirect effects that this investment can implicate on their economy are discussed.   The method for this study is qualitative. Interviews have been made with the initiative owner of the company LHG Learning Center and with civil servants in the municipality of Lycksele.   The conclusions drawn in this study are that the establishment of LHG Learning Centers in Lycksele will include both opportunities and risks for the municipality’s future. The indirect impact of LHG establishment on Lycksele economy is unknown today. Therefore the municipality can be vulnerable when a dependence is emerging, which make the community planning process hard. If the municipality of Lycksele can’t provide for LHG the needs, can the opportunities to develop be lost if the company choose to relocate.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the practice of local learning centres in Sweden. The aim is to describe and to establish an understanding of relations and the actor-networks that surround the practice. The thesis is based on four different studies. The first two studies focus on the organisation of the local learning centres and scrutinises the relation between the local learning centres, municipal administration and business in the region. What types of relations exist and what strategies are used by the local learning centres to enrol actors into the actor-network? The two latter studies investigate videoconference in the context of local learning centres. Videoconference is described as a socio-technical environment. The studies focus on interaction and communications asking what kind of relations are created between environment, material design and people? The theoretical framework consists of actor-network theory and the notions of space and spatial relations. The methods used in the four studies are interviews and observations. Informants that have contributed to the study are headmasters, teachers and students as well as project managers, politicians and businessmen. The results of the studies show how the local learning centres fails as brokers on an educational market. The reasons are many. The main results of the studies stress a number of obstacles of involvement and shed light on different strategies of enrolment. The results connected to videoconference show how material design and technology impacts the practice. Different strategies are developed by participants to manoeuvre in the videoconferencing classrooms. In conclusion the four studies show how actor-networks influence the practice of local learning centres by representations.

Abstract:
Local centres contribute to the sustainability of cities. Recent planning blueprints for Australian cities emphasise the importance of local centres policy in reducing car use, creating local economic growth and providing equitable access to goods and services. Globalisation has brought with it the tendency for independent businesses to be displaced by corporate retailers. Local centres are affected by this trend as global players jockey for a share of local retail and a diverse range of small retailers is replaced by fewer and larger businesses that draw customers from regional rather than local catchments. The growth in new retailing models such as franchise stores and chain stores, together with the move to auto-oriented retail formats, has meant that independents struggle to compete with the low pricing strategies of large corporate retailers. Independent businesses add diversity, vitality, colour and resilience to centres and make a greater local economic impact than their chain store competitors. In Britain, there is concern about the effect on towns and villages of the loss of small shops and independent businesses. In the USA, growth in large format stand-alone super stores has raised the ire of communities as retail giants put the “mom and pops” out of business. Local communities can consider policy measures such as applying size caps to chain store developments so that the independent business sector is supported and can continue to provide vitality to local centres. This research may provide useful insights for communities and local governments wishing to address issues that relate to the balance between chain stores and independents in their local centres.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores the production of sarcophagi with sculpted decorations, through the comparative study of three Western towns of the Roman Empire that are economic and production centers as well as closely connected to Rome.Although in these regions, such funeral process was always in use, the generalisation of burials in the middle of the 2nd century required the mobilization of production and technical forces in order to meet the increasing new demand. We argue that three main centers located in Rome, Greece and Asia Minor were responsible for the development of this funeral technique: they decided on the decorations and designs, were in charge of the majority of the production and exportations, and gave this process its characteristics and meaning. Considering each city consecutively, we aim to show that the development of sarcophagi production goes beyond a traditional context where provinces would passively let more important cities be in charge of all the decisions. In addition to the technical, stylistic and iconographic analysis of the corpus, if we want to grasp the specificity of this funeral technique, we also need to replace its production and evolution in a local context of decentralized workshops. How do sarcophagi with sculpted decorations fit in an already existing production, and how do they transform such production? This will lead us to consider this technique from another point of view than the mere copy of an original model, thus moving from the unilateral model of a central influence on the peripheries to a structure of dynamic exchanges between main cities and local workshops

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate the use of Strategic Planning at the companies of the Local Productive Arrangement Metal Center. This is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory research. To collect the data, we used a questionnaire that was applied to the 48 companies members of the Local Productive Arrangement Metal Center. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics using tables, multiple correspondence analysis, Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test, with statistical software. The analysis of multiple correspondence identified two groups of companies. Group A includes the profile of businessmen who only participate the Local Productive Arrangement Metal Center with younger leaders and less graduated. The businessman ignores and doesn't know partially or fully Strategic Planning. Group B is formed by businessmen who participate in associations or professional associations, and are older with higher level of education. The businessman of this group consider important and apply the Strategic Planning. Chi-square test showed significant relationship (p<0.05) between the characteristics of businessman and the implementation of the Strategic Planning. The age, level of education, the form of preparation of Strategic Planning, the level of knowledge and the involvement of the businessmen were the variables that showed more associations between variables related to the preparation and implementation of the Strategic Planning.

Abstract:
Collota, Netahaha and the Development of the Wari Power in Cotahuasi Valley, Arequipa, PerúAn enduring problem in the study of ancient states and empires is modem recognition of different forms of regional consolidation when employing only data available in the archaeological record. The construction of an administrative center is one of the clear indicators of a state's presence. Areas with these types of centers are often described as pockets of direct control in an imperial mosaic. During the Middle Horizon (600-1000 A.D.), significant changes in settlement patterns and subsistence regimes occurred in the Cotahuasi Valley of Peru that were a significant departure from its previous course of development. At the same time, two new administrative centers, Collota and Netahaha, were constructed, in the architectural style of the Wari Empire. Architectural and ceramic evidence from Collota and Netahaha, however, suggest that the installations were not constructed by the Wari Empire as part of a strategy of direct control in the valley. Instead, the sites were local administrative centers constructed by local elites who emulated Wari style. Although the empire probably did exercise substantial control over the affairs of the valley during the Middle Horizon, local elites initiated the changes that we see in the material record.
