Abstract:
Audio Engineers are required to design and deploy large multi-channel sound systems which meet a set of requirements and use networking technologies such as Firewire and Ethernet AVB. Bandwidth utilisation and parameter groupings are among the factors which need to be considered in these designs. An implementation of an extensible, generic simulation framework would allow audio engineers to easily compare protocols and networking technologies and get near real time responses with regards to bandwidth utilisation. Our hypothesis is that an application-level capability can be developed which uses a network simulation framework to enable this process and enhances the audio engineer’s experience of designing and configuring a network. This thesis presents a new, extensible simulation framework which can be utilised to simulate professional audio networks. This framework is utilised to develop an application - AudioNetSim - based on the requirements of an audio engineer. The thesis describes the AudioNetSim models and implementations for Ethernet AVB, Firewire and the AES- 64 control protocol. AudioNetSim enables bandwidth usage determination for any network configuration and connection scenario and is used to compare Firewire and Ethernet AVB bandwidth utilisation. It also applies graph theory to the circular join problem and provides a solution to detect circular joins.

This thesis is concerned with the design of a high-speed backbone network which provides a high bandwidth interconnection for various Personal Computer Networks (PC-Networks) with an integrated service of voice and data. With the advanced technology of optical fiber as the transmission medium, several different existing topologies and protocols are discussed for the backbone network design. The token ring protocol is simulated and evaluated to find out a suitable buffer size and the length of voice and data packet for backbone network. The Network II.5 simulation tool is applied to simulate the token ring simulation model with different parameters. The Network Interface Unit (NIU) is designed from the simulation results with a cost-effective consideration.

Abstract:
This study investigated the appropriate methods for incorporating collaborative activities supported by wireless local area networks in the middle school classroom environment. The project addressed the problem that although current educational practice indicates the value of incorporating collaborative learning in the middle school classroom, the physical setting, lack of training, and a narrow scope of vision tend to block that incorporation in many schools. The goal of this project was to develop and evaluate a process model that can be utilized to facilitate the collaborative learning process through the incorporation of wireless LAN's in a middle school environment. Criteria that are necessary for a successful product were established and matrices based on the established criteria were developed. An eight-member Formative Committee was assembled to establish a criteria set for the process model. The committee consists of seven educators from the Emanuel County School System, plus one representative from the system-wide technological support staff. The Formative Committee examined current practices and methodologies associated with collaborative learning in the classroom. This committee also investigated methods in which collaborative activities can be enhanced through the utilization of wireless networks. An Expert Committee was responsible for validating the criteria established by the Formative Committee. This four member Expert Panel was selected from teacher educators in local colleges and universities based on teaching experience, expertise in collaborative learning, expertise incorporating computers in the classroom, and expertise developing educational support materials. The validation was accomplished utilizing surveys and formative feedback based on criteria recommended by the Formative Committee. Current collaborative activities were examined and guidelines were developed that meet the requirements of the validated criteria. A pilot study was conducted in order to aid in the developmental process. An eighth grade music appreciation course was utilized in the pilot study. This class utilized computers connected via a wireless network and the process model that was developed based on the established criteria, to support the collaborative activities. A Development Committee examined the results from the pilot study. This committee was composed of three members from the Formative Committee and three members from the Expert Panel. Data gathered from the Development Committee and the pilot study was incorporated into the process model. After recommendations from the Development Committee were examined and integrated into the product, a Summative Committee was developed in order to evaluate the process model. This committee presented recommendations for future modifications as well as future areas of research.

Abstract:
One of the local area network medium access control standards created by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers in IEEE Project 802 is the carrier sense multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD) medium access control. Numerous studies have been reported in the literature on the performance of CSMA/CD. These studies show that CSMA/CD performs well under light network load but not well at heavy load. To improve the performance of CSMA/CD under heavy load, a new concept called network partitioning is presented. Network partitioning allows the network to be partitioned into segments when under heavy load. Partition stations then act as bridges between the segments. The impact of network partitioning on network performance was tested using a simulation model of an Ethernet local area network (an implementation of the CSMA/CD medium access control). The simulation results show that network partitioning can improve the performance of CSMA/CD under heavy load.

This is a study of the simulated performance of two local area networks, Ethernet and the MAP network, respectively based on the IEEE standards 802.3 and 802.4. The simulation language chosen is of the discrete event type rather than the more usual analytical model. This is done in order to observe the interaction between the various entities of a network in order to gain a better understanding of the method of operation of such a system. The performance demanded of a node entity by the networks is determined. The performance of some commercially available hardware is derived from manufacturer's specifications and compared with that required by the network. It is found that there is a significant disparity, with the network requirements far exceeding that of the hardware capabilities. The simulation models developed are used to determine the performance of the networks both with and without the limitations imposed by currently available hardware. While the inclusion of the hardware performance causes little ·loss in performance for the Ethernet network, it has a highly detrimental effect on that of the MAP network. A possible solution is found to this limitation which requires minimal change to the existing protocol. The conclusions reached are that with currently available hardware a group of nodes are able to fully utilise the performance of the Ethernet LAN although a single pair of nodes is unable to do so. With regard to the MAP network, the network performance is limited by that of the node performance although this can be offset to a certain extent by careful choice of one of the protocol parameters, or modification of the hardware design.

Abstract:
This thesis presents the development and implementation of two fundamental communication sublayers, medium access and logical link, for a new Local Area Network (LAN) which utilizes the intra-building power distribution circuit as physical transmission medium. This medium provides a low cost means for data communications with a high degree of portability. A low-to-medium data rate and a relatively high error rate are two of the major disadvantages associated with the use of the medium. The Logical Link Control (LLC) protocol adopted is a modified version of the IEEE 802.2 protocol; whereas, the Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol used is a simple hub polling scheme. For efficiency reason, both LLC and MAC sublayers are implemented in the kernel of the UNIX¹ operating system. The schemes used, justifications for the decisions made and their implementations are discussed in details in the thesis. The performance of the power line LAN formed with four Sun workstations² using modems with a data rate of 14.4 kilo-bit per second is measured and analyzed. ¹UNIX is a trademark of AT & T Bell laboratories. ²Sun workstation is a trademark of Sun Microsystems.

A high-speed local area communication network--the Expressnet--is investigated in this thesis with regard to voice and data transmissions. Performance criteria, such as channel utilizations, delay characteristics, and queue lengths are determined from computer simulation and numerical calculation approaches. The protocol is particularly suitable for the transmission of packetized voice as it is able to guarantee an upper bound on the transmission delay for each packet. The network under study thus will find major application in future office automation, where large amounts of voice will be integrated with data.

Abstract:
The Named Data Networking (NDN) is a new Internet architecture that changes the network semantic from packet delivery to content retrieval and promises benefits in areas such as content distribution, security, mobility support, and application development. While the basic NDN architecture applies to any network environment, local area networks (LANs) are of particular interest because of their prevalence on the Internet and the relatively low barrier to deployment. In this dissertation, I design NDN protocols and implement NDN software, to make NDN communication in LAN robust and efficient. My contributions include: (a) a forwarding behavior specification required on every NDN node; (b) a secure and efficient self-learning strategy for switched Ethernet, which discovers available contents via occasional flooding, so that the network can operate without manual configuration, and does not require a routing protocol or a centralized controller; (c) NDN-NIC, a network interface card that performs name-based packet filtering, to reduce CPU overhead and power consumption of the main system during broadcast communication on shared media; (d) the NDN Link Protocol (NDNLP), which allows the forwarding plane to add hop-by-hop headers, and provides a fragmentation-reassembly feature so that large NDN packets can be sent directly over Ethernet with limited MTU.

Abstract:
STARNET is a fiber optic based network which facilitates the interconnection of distributed Local Area Networks. Configured as a sixteen pointed star topology with a multiprocessor based controller at the center of the star (named the Central Switch). STARNET is capable of scheduling calls from users connected to User Access Nodes located at the points of the star. Messages are passed from one node to another through the Central Switch via duplex fiber optic lines connecting each node to the center.
This paper presents a multiprocessor based design of the User Access Node. The hardware and software structure is examined in depth, providing solid guidelines for the physical construction of the unit. The performances of statistical STARNET models using parameters obtained from the design (and three different Central Switch models) are plotted and compared for five different examples of external traffic. The model analysis gives an indication of the expected message delays, supporting the feasibility of the design.

Abstract:
This thesis will present a new topology independent network architecture for highly fault tolerant, mesh interconnected Local Area Networks(LAN). This architecture was developed within the IEEE 802 Local Computer Reference Model framework and a LAN utilising this architecture will act as a direct replacement for the Media Access Control (MAC) and Physical (PHY) layers of that reference model. The only current MAC protocol that provides a high level of fault tolerance and topological independence is the flooding protocol. The problems with this protocol are highlighted and as a result, a new protocol that combines redundant routing with learning automata techniques has been developed. The learning automata provide the protocol with the capability to detect and adapt to changes in the network connectivity while redundant routing is utilised to cope with the immediate effects of failures. Detailed analysis of the performance of the new learning automata protocol is given. The steady state or long term performance analysis has shown that this protocol offers considerable improvement when compared to the flooding protocol and the protocol's non-learning equivalent. The learning automata protocol is capable of combining the advantages of the other protocols whilst minimising their disadvantages. When considering the performance of the learning automata protocol under failure conditions, the advantages of its learning capability are clear. Even under high numbers of failures, the protocol is capable of adapting promptly to the resulting changes in network connectivity and is able to optimise the use of the remaining communications capacity.

Abstract:
Unidirectional broadcast structures constitute a class of high performance local network architectures. They are very flexible and well suited for fiber optic implementation. The access methods used in these networks are often based on certain implicit token-passing mechanisms to provide superior delay-vs-throughput characteristics. The performance of these unidirectional broadcast protocols is evaluated in this thesis via a study on the classical token-ring system. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of mean delay-vs-throughput performance for the gated exhaustive service discipline under asymmetric traffic. The analysis involves examination of the statistical behaviour of interacting queues. A number of exact results are derived and based on these results, a very good approximation for the average delays is developed. The approximation agrees closely with exact numerical solutions over a wide range of system parameters. The implications of the approximation are also discussed.

Abstract:
This dissertation describes the analysis, design, and implementation of a session level communication system referred to as PLEXNET. PLEXNET was developed specifically to provide communication services required by Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) applications but which are not currently available as part of commercially available LAN products. CSCW services include such things as: reliable broadcast communications, dynamic multicasting, and message queuing. Analysis of CSCW networking requirements entailed: reviewing CSCW applications and communications systems; synthesizing a data exchange model for collaborative tools; and defining a target system (PC-LAN). PLEXNET design provides a discussion of: networking tradeoffs, the relationship between PLEXNET and NETBIOS, PLEXNET queue structure, and PLEXNET implementation details. The design and implementation of PLEXNET were validated by performing discrete event simulations comparing response times and resource utilization for three communication paradigms and by developing four collaborative applications which employ PLEXNET for data communications. These applications are: Multi-User LAN Editor, Electronic Discussion System, Contracts Procurement, and Video Switcher.

The inherent properties of optical fibers such as small size and weight, EMI/RFI immunity, low attenuation, and large bandwidth provide many advantages over wire conductors that make fiber well-suited for communications. Fiber optic local area networks are particularly suited for use in electrically noisy and space sensitive industrial environments. The diversity of communication requirements that exist in a typical factory situation can be accommodated by the use of a hierarchical communications structure consisting of multiple tiers of fiber optic networks. The lowest tier of this structure would be inexpensive feeder networks used to connect devices such as sensors, actuators, PLCs, robots, and small computers on a factory floor. The emphasis at this level is low cost, but while providing interconnection to higher tiers. An approach which satisfies the lowest tier requirements is a non-shared medium scheme which is link based, consisting of an active star architecture using a roll-call polling access method. The centralized intelligence structure of a master/slave access method allows one to concentrate on the cost optimization of the optical data links. The use of low-cost optical components such as LEDs, PIN diodes, and plastic fiber as well as the potential for a significant amount of common hub equipment provides considerable economies.

Abstract:
Digital audio networks are becoming the preferred solution for the interconnection of professional audio devices. Prominent amongst their advantages are: reduced noise interference, signal multiplexing, and a reduction in the number of cables connecting networked devices. In the context of professional audio, digital networks have been used to connect devices including: mixers, effects units, preamplifiers, breakout boxes, computers, monitoring controllers, and synthesizers. Such networks are governed by protocols that define the connection management rocedures, and device synchronization processes of devices that conform to the protocols. A wide range of digital audio network control protocols exist, each defining specific hardware requirements of devices that conform to them. Device parameter control is achieved by sending a protocol message that indicates the target parameter, and the action that should be performed on the parameter. Typically, a device will conform to only one protocol. By implication, only devices that conform to a specific protocol can communicate with each other, and only a controller that conforms to the protocol can control such devices. This results in the isolation of devices that conform to disparate protocols, since devices of different protocols cannot communicate with each other. This is currently a challenge in the professional music industry, particularly where digital networks are used for audio device control. This investigation seeks to resolve the issue of interoperability between professional audio devices that conform to different digital audio network protocols. This thesis proposes the use of a proxy that allows for the translation of protocol messages, as a solution to the interoperability problem. The proxy abstracts devices of one protocol in terms of another, hence allowing all the networked devices to appear as conforming to the same protocol. The proxy receives messages on behalf of the abstracted device, and then fulfills them in accordance with the protocol that the abstracted device conforms to. Any number of protocol devices can be abstracted within such a proxy. This has the added advantage of allowing a common controller to control devices that conform to the different protocols.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with designing a Higher Layer Protocol (HLP) for small distributed microcontroller systems using a well-established network protocol: the Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol which, currently, is widely used in the automation industries. Steps were taken to investigate three popular HLPs based on the CAN protocol: namely. Smart Distributed System (SDS), DeviceNet. and CAN Kingdom. Following the comparison of the three HLPs, the CAN Kingdom protocol was chosen for the task of designing the HLP in this project in order to satisfy the restrictions associated with small systems. Thus, the HLP (named the Small CAN Kingdom protocol) of this project was designed according to the principles of the CAN Kingdom protocol, which contains many advantages for open network solutions. This enables designers to enhance a system's performance relatively easily. A complete hardware and software design of a small CAN-based system, utilising the Motorola MC68HC 11 microcontrollers, the Intel 82527 CAN controller chips, and DS3695 (RS485 standard) transceivers has been described. This small system can be used to demonstrate the performance of the Small CAN Kingdom protocol. The development of the system software has also taken into account the rules associated with this protocol.
