Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article is a revised version of a talk given in lieu of the Ph.D. dissertation: "Huntington´s Disease in Everyday Life. Knowledge, Ignorance and Genetic Risk". The dissertation evolves around the analysis of modern living with risk for a late onset genetic disorder. Here, three aspects of everyday lives faced with Huntington´s Disease (HD) are discussed. First, HD is one aspect of everyday living along with a variety of other aspects. The importance of risk is analysed as personal and changing in changing circumstances. Second, genetic knowledge and technology are not solid universals, but situated and changing, and of varying importance in lives at risk. Last, the ethical rationalities of everyday living, research and clinical practice concerned with a hereditary condition are discussed as complex and contradictory in and across structures of social practice.

Abstract:

Abstract:

We have integrated social media into our lives by choice and we in the medical practice, amidst our busy schedules, have been using it for easy connectivity with friends and families and also, if not importantly, for our continued education. With the advent of digital pathology the image sharing has become much easier. This has been further expedited by cameras on the smart phones and editing apps. We have several groups dedicated to numerous subspecialties in pathology and they make peer reviewing and sharing of images, articles and relevant advances relatively easy. However, like all human endeavors, the lines can be crossed. Hence balance has to be maintained regarding patient privacy and our own professional needs. American College of Physicians and the Federation of State Medical Boards has proposed guidelines for the same. These guidelines will be amended and improved in future with techniqual advances.Nepalese Medical Journal, vol.1, No. 1, 2018, Page: 39-42

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Youth suicide is a specific gesture of waste, a throwing away of the gift, and thus it embodies a powerful statement about young people's refusal to live. In this article I suggest that it is a refusal to engage with, and be sustained by, the particular economies of value, morality and meaning that govern identity within contemporary cultural life. From a post-structuralist perspective the metaphors through which suicide comes to be known are examined via indepth interviews conducted with young people ( n = 41) as part of a larger study also involving adults/professionals ( n = 40) within urban and regional communities. Shame figures predominantly in young people's accounts of suicidal experiences and the everyday social relations that govern the expression of emotion. In contrast to the positivist bent of much suicide research and policy, this article argues for the necessity of understanding the social dynamics of shame in relation to the forces of affect that constitute the emergent subjectivities of young people.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Textile vascular grafts, normally with large space cavity between yarns or filaments, might fail because of the leakage of blood after they are implanted into human’s body. Consequently, patients’ lives are threatened. How to control textile structures to make them more compact is a problem that needs to be solved. The woven constructions of commercial products mainly contain 4/4 twill weave and 1/1 plain weave. In this study, novel tubular and seamless prototype vascular grafts with different yarn size, yarn type and weaves were successfully manufactured through relative easier weaving process. Physical characteristics of the prototype samples were measured and compared with two commercial products, Cook/Bolton and Talent/Medtronic. Factors to influence the physical characteristics that are important for commercial application, as water permeability, thickness, and porosity of the prototype samples were also analyzed. It was found that yarn type and weaves had major influence on water permeability. Yarn size had major influence on thickness.

Abstract:
In his film Conducta [Behavior] (2014), Ernesto Daranas portrays the ethical and physical challenges of an aging teacher, struggling to improve the lives of her students, not just within the classroom setting, but also in their family and social spheres. Thus, in response to a top/down social structure where an unseen government exerts economic and political pressure on schools and families in crisis mode, Daranas proposes model redirecting away from Ernesto Che Guevara and back toward José Martí as a pedagogic strategy for modulating conduct expectations of elementary school children. However, because government censorship sensitizes the spoken word, the filmmaker is careful to avoid negative repercussions by letting markedly visual elements of his mise en scène reveal indiscreet, if not outright subversive views of home, school, and cityscape. Also, through a recurring wandering narrative format, Ernesto Daranas conducts a political inquiry analogous to how Radicant aesthetics exercise wandering narratives.

Abstract:
In this paper, I draw on the doctrine of Thomas Aquinas to comment on natural patterns of flourishing in human virtuous life. Through the concept of “natural goodness” borrowed from Philippa Foot, I aim to show how in light of Aquinas’s moral philosophy the realm of physical nature serves as an exemplar for human reason and action. While acknowledging a great variety of cultures and the crucial role of free choice in shaping human action, I emphasize the inherent orientation of human freedom towards moral flourishing, as I find it in Aquinas’s doctrine. The desire for happiness and the natural seeds of moral virtues, terms of which the human mind discovers from various instances of natural or morally virtuous action, provide some basic orientation to human virtuous conduct according to reason. The diversity of virtuous flourishing of human lives and cultures has an immense scope according to the degree to which ordered practical reasoning allows and fosters it. At the same time, however, virtuous flourishing depends on and keeps in congruence with the intelligible patterns of nature that reason and virtue imitate.

Abstract:
With its importance in and influence to our lives, well-being and survival, science has never been more vulnerable to prejudices and scandals as a platform of all sorts of academic misconducts. Lessons are taught by some of the biggest unethical conducts in the recent past which had prompted more stringent ethical guidelines and publication procedures. The case of Yoshitaka Fujii as a scientist with the most number of publications retracted is astonishing. The ability of Yoshihiro Sato to deceive the world leading journals and their referees is astonishing. These cases show that individual or few publications with fabricated data is impervious to detection, but when a series of such faked results is available, it cannot dodge the function of reviewing eventually. The story of Hwang Woo-Suk will forever remain a quintessential pitfall of scientific corruption. The way the purported creation of human stem cell deceived one of the leading journals in the world will be a scientific monument. What could more exemplify breaching ethical standards in human experimentation at the highest level than by He Jiankui’s creation of gene-edited babies? These are the chronicles in the science hall of shame.

Abstract:
The Sangam literature consists of texts that explain the internal lives of peoples from five ancient Tamil land divisions. In this anthology, Neythal explains the life of the sea and the fishermen who are dependent on the sea and also describes the sea creatures of marine life. Records of fishes are also found among these species. 18 types of fish are found in this way. Similarly, the writer conducted a field survey of fishermen living in Pamban village in Rameswaram circle, Ramanathapuram district, and found 204 types of fish. The five types of fish found in Sangam literature are lobster fish, codfish, shark fish, swordfish, and sawshark fish, and they are found in the lives of modern fishermen. The main occupation of fishermen is fishing. These fishing methods were documented in Sangam literature by poets of the time. Sharks mentioned in Sangam literature are also found among fishermen living in four places: Pondicherry, Cuddalore District, Mandapam, and Pampan (Ramanathapuram District). Here, the names of these sharks, their types, their habitats, characteristics of sharks, hunting of sharks, food of sharks, breeding patterns, worship of sharks, and other uses of sharks have been investigated.

Abstract:
Friendship is said to promote psychological and physical well‐being and increase social inclusion. Yet, intergenerational friendship has garnered little research attention due to the assumed dominance of age homophily in friendship. In this article we explore intergenerational friendship from the perspective of “younger” and “older” friends at the “generational book‐ends” of the life course. We focus on the role that intergenerational friendship plays in processes of social inclusion in the everyday lives of the participants, bringing together a study conducted in Finland and one in Ireland. Both studies employ qualitative methodology, drawing from interviews with 31 young people who were refugees (aged 13–18) in Finland and 23 older people (aged 65+) in Ireland. Our findings reveal that the younger and the older participants concur on the qualities and benefits of intergenerational friendship. Additionally, while age is not a uniform definer of friendships, differences in chronological age are not meaningless but support caring, enjoyment, and inclusion in alternative ways compared to peer‐aged friendships. Access to diverse company, distinct support, broader networks, and alternative identities lead to increased experiences of social inclusion at a personal and societal level. We conclude by calling on policy makers and communities to create spaces and opportunities for inclusion through friendship for all generations.

The built environment has long been recognised as a significant determinant of social inclusion and participation of people who experience disability. Despite existence of anti-discrimination legislation and development of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with a Disability, many individuals continue to experience inequitable access to their communities. Using a qualitative approach, this study aimed to explore the lived experiences of people who use Changing Places facilities within Victoria, Australia. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four participants regarding their experiences of using Changing Places facilities. Findings from this study further consolidate existing research that highlight social inequities experienced by people with severe and profound physical disabilities. Findings in this preliminary study can also support the development and expansion of Changing Places facilities, not only as a means of meeting legal obligations within our community, but also as an approach towards improving social inclusion and participation of people with severe and profound physical disabilities.

Abstract:
Introduction. The period of life known as adolescence generally refers to transition from childhood to adulthood. Adolescents' progress toward autonomy involves remaining connected with, as well as separated from parents. Young people and their parents usually have mixed feelings about adolescent autonomy and attachment. An estimated 50% of children born in the 80s have spent part of their developmental years in single-parent households. Divorce is almost always a stressful event in children's lives. Youthful suicide rate has increased dramatically and is the third leading cause of death among 15-19 year olds. Conduct disorder is one of the most frequently diagnosed conditions in adolescents. Suicidal adolescents and adolescents with conduct disorder are much more likely than their peers to have grown up in disrupted, disorganized homes with lack of attachment between parents and their children. Material and methods This prospective study was carried out during 2002, 2003, and 2004. The research included 60 adolescents treated at the Center for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in Novi Sad, 30 with diagnosed conduct disorder and 30 with suicidal behavior. Results Along with other kinds of distress, suicidal adolescents have experienced an escalation of family problems a few months prior to attempted suicide. Discussion Divorce and life in single-parent households is almost always a stressful period in children's lives. Conduct disorder and suicidal behavior represent a desperate cry for help. Conclusion Most adolescents in both groups live in single-parent house?holds. These young people have frequently passed into adolescence with little reason to feel that they could rely on their parents for support, or on their home as a place of sanctuary. .

Abstract This issue explores the historical production of infrastructures as places of resistance and world-building for workers, villagers, and migrants across the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries—a period when narratives about the role of infrastructure as a conduit for modernization, development, and the centralizing capacities of the state had broad purchase. Contributions invite consideration of two questions. First, what struggles do histories of infrastructural power reveal if infrastructures are delinked from master narratives tying them to state and state-backed centralization? While development, nation building, and extraction are often state-sponsored or state-backed projects, the articles here demonstrate that modern states are not the only wielders of infrastructural power. Second, how does this decentering of the state in infrastructural analyses transform the stakes of radical political activity and the work of radical historical actors? In highlighting a different, more localized scale of infrastructural production and relation building—both within and beyond the bounds of the nation-state—contributors to this issue resituate ostensibly disparate, small sites as key to larger political struggles and frame everyday forms of “getting by” as resistance.

The Code of Ethics and Professional Standards of Conduct for Emergency Management Professionals (2022) was recently created to further delineate the ethical boundaries and conduct expectations for professional emergency management practice. Significantly, the code of ethics provides an essential foundation toward recognition as a profession with hallmarks of monopoly, autonomy, and authority. The code and standards of conduct establish a clear definition of the role emergency management has in overseeing a complex, diverse risk portfolio that protects lives, livelihoods, and quality of life. The document captures the intent, challenges, dimensions, and significance of emergency management practice in a rapidly changing world and brings ethics to the forefront of decisions. We introduce the idea of deterring undesirable behaviors by raising incivility awareness—sensitivity to when one is violating norms of civil behavior. We demonstrate that this approach is effective in deterring pedestrians from crossing intersections at red lights, which is a serious worldwide safety problem. In three field experiments conducted at urban intersections (involving more than 12,000 total observations), we found that posting signs raising pedestrians’ incivility awareness significantly reduced red-light crossing rates. We also found that the incivility-awareness message of “Crossing at the red light is uncivil” made those signs more effective than signs with messages that emphasized the importance of not crossing at a red light (“Don't cross at the red light”), civil behavior (“Waiting for the green light is civil”), safety (“Waiting for the green light is good for safety”), and danger (“Crossing at the red light is bad for safety”).

Aneurysms and thromboses of the portal vein are rare pathologies of the portal system that commonly follow an asymptomatic course. The vast majority of cases are diagnosed as incidental findings during imaging studies. Symptoms of aneurysms are the result of mass effects, while thrombosis symptoms are a function of the liver's ability to form a collateral circulation network in the thrombosis. The scant experience with such cases poses a dilemma for patient management and so the vast majority of authors choose an expectant approach with rigorous patient surveillance and only intervene in symptomatic patients. We report one case of an aneurysm of the portal vein and one case of portal vein thrombosis and discuss management and observation of these patients.

Introduction:As Israel's National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) provider, Magen David Adom (MDA) is constantly looking for ways to improve the response to mass casualty incidents (MCIs). Previous research has shown that in an MCI situation, the demand for resources is disproportionate to the available resources, thus creating a dilemma of how to triage and treat the patients, as well as how to best prioritize and treat the critical patients.Aim:Smartwatches have become an integral part of society. MDA constantly looks for ways to integrate new technologies into their emergency response protocols. Smartwatches were used in this experiment to determine if in an MCI, relaying live information to the dispatch center would improve the time it takes for emergency crews to effectively treat and transport critical patients. Methods:A drill and scenario were designed to simulate an MCI in which there were 3 severe, 2 moderate, and 5 lightly wounded patients. There were then different colored smartwatches placed on each victim. The watches transmitted real-time blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen saturation readings to the dispatch center. The live information was transferred directly to responding teams. A second drill was conducted using the same scenario, same number of patients, but without watches to examine the differences in response times. Results:MDA found that the use of smartwatches directly improved the times (by 3.27 minutes) in which emergency teams were able to reach the most severely wounded patients and evacuate them to the hospital in a timely manner.Discussion:Using smartwatches to transmit live information to the dispatch center allowed for effective treatment and transport of patients in an MCI. Use of such information allows the dispatch center to direct teams to provide accurate treatment to the patients according to their needs.

Abstract:
In contemporary debates on the so-called “return of religion” in new forms and practices of spirituality, the spiritual practices are often seen as emerging on the ruins of a fragmented and outdated religious tradition. In this article an attempt is made to conceptualize spirituality beyond the religion-secularization divide. An alternative perspective on spirituality is developed through a reading of Michel Foucault’s writings and lectures on spiritual practices in antique philosophy and in Christianity. In this perspective the modalities of individual spiritual practices are largely dependent on interactions with dominant power-knowledge regimes and problematizations of individual lives. This article argues that this perspective on the spiritual practices in the West has the potential of making a valuable contribution to interpretations of present-day spirituality and lived religiosity.
