Abstract:
Three societal lines of conflict, “casteism”, communalism, and regionalism, are regarded as severe challenges in present-day India. This article discusses and compares differences between presentations of these lines of conflict in six textbook series for social sciences prepared by the Indian states of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, and by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) in New Delhi. The variations in perspective, scope, and approach are related to changing educational approaches and to specific discourses of identity politics, which may be explained in terms of the impact of different positions adopted by states and the union towards the issues, and in terms of the discursive dominance of specific sociopolitical viewpoints.

Abstract:
The religious life takes new challenges lately, new narration of religious issue continues to grow due to the reformation 1998, political polarization, and the emergence of new media. In this space, religious social harmony is no longer the main discourse, but rather the ideological discourse that causes strengthening religious polarization. In that context, Emha Ainun Nadjib remains consistent with the struggle for building social harmony in society. His consistency has social significance caused by his adaptive thought through three things: a framework sufism (transcendental structuralism), based on living values in the form of religious understanding based on social life, and historis-anthropocentric framework. These three circular movements build the theology of Emha Ainun Nadjib's social harmony. Keyword; teologi harmoni, living values, transendensi, Historis-antroposentris

Abstract:
The purpose is to promote culturally competent care among healthcare providers by identifying and describing how Hispanics in East Tennessee view health and what they do to prevent illness. A focus group of six to ten Hispanics of mixed genders over age eighteen moderated by a native Spanish-speaking interpreter. Questions explored how Hispanics define health and sickness, health maintenance practices, and alternative medicines and practices. Results were interpreted from Spanish to English to be analyzed. The Circle in Which You Live was described by members as consisting of relationships, physical health, and peace of the mind and soul. In Shutting Themselves in Their Stress, group members described Hispanic women specifically as experiencing stress most often. Members explored how the mind attracts illness, types of pain, and nonpharmacological remedies in The Problems Do Not End. Stress is a major concern for health. Hispanics have a very holistic view of health. Pain relief methods mentioned by participants include distraction, bags of ice, and relaxation. Healthcare providers need to take time to ask about specific stressors in patient’s lives, collaborate with the patient, and explore ways to decrease and manage stress in a culturally sensitive manner.

Understanding molecular interactions at the surfaces of cellular membranes, including adsorption and transport, is of fundamental importance in both biological and pharmaceutical studies. At present, particularly with respect to small and medium size (drug-like) molecules, it is desirable to gain an understanding of the mechanisms that govern membrane adsorption and transport. To characterize drug-membrane interactions and mechanisms governing the process of molecular uptake at cellular membranes in living organisms, we need to develop effective experimental techniques to reach quantitative and time-resolved analysis of molecules at the membrane surfaces. Also, we preferably want to develop label-free optical techniques suited for single-cell and live cell analysis. Here, I discuss the nonlinear optical technique, second-harmonic light scattering (SHS), for studying molecule-membrane interactions and transport of molecules at the membrane of living cells with real-time resolution and membrane surface-specificity. Time-resolved SHS can quantify adsorption and transport of molecules, with specific nonlinear optical properties, at living organisms without imposing any mechanical stress onto the membrane. This label-free and surface-sensitive technique can even differentiate molecular transport at individual membranes within a multi-membrane cell (e.g., bacteria). In this dissertation, I present our current research and accomplishments in extending the capabilities of the SHS technique to study molecular uptake kinetics at the membranes of living cells, to monitor bacteria membrane integrity, to characterize the antibacterial mechanism-of-action of antibiotic compounds, to update the molecular mechanism of the Gram-stain protocol, to pixel-wise mapping of the membrane viscosity of the living cells, and to probe drug-induced activation of bacterial mechanosensitive channels in vitro.

Abstract:
Organic architecture is often used term especially in connection with the daring and experimental form. The exact definition or division is still missing. The founder of modern organic architecture is to be generally considered as Frank Loyd Wright. He was the man who created organic architecture and also made first definition in the early twentieth century, when formulating new architectural styles. Dissertation deals with insufficiently described problem of organic architecture. The main focus is on contemporary production of residential organic architecture in Central Europe. Especially on the particular realizations in Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Austria, Germany and Poland. Beside detail description of European realizations, the dissertation deals also with foundations of organic architecture in U.S.A. and important realizations here. Modern organic architecture primarily originated in the United States of America. The work presents most important contemporary realizations and architects creating resident living organic architecture in other countries around the world in order to complete the overview. The objective of dissertation was describing newest trends in designing buildings for living. Find position of organic architecture and give reasons for it´s increasing popularity, spread and necessity for new development in architecture according to the new trends. Organic architecture is an alternative way of contemporary residential living. It´s popularity is growing in last years in response to the development of modern technologies and materials, the need to protect our natural resources and also to the increasing negatives of globalization and to denial of local traditions and regional specificities. Aspects of organic forms were divided into three main groups according to their main characteristics: form, harmony and sustainable development. Another objective was find location of contemporary organic residential architecture in Czech Republic and abroad. It is rather spread all over the world than concentrated on certain places. Therefore I selected countries that are richer than the others on the occurrence of organic buildings. The objective was also to address architects, specialists, public and especially university teachers of architecture and students themselves. Communication with them was mainly connected with grant project in 2010. The theme of grant project was contemporary organic architecture in residential living. There were lectures about contemporary organic architecture and exhibition on the theme: Contemporary living organic architecture. The publication of the catalog was published under the title: Contemporary organic houses - Europe. I had the opportunity to visit a number of organic family houses abroad. Specifically houses in Slovakia, Hungary and Germany. Results of survey, which was realized by questions to owners and authors of chosen buildings, are included in dissertation. The mail results of dissertation are - make a detail review of organic architecture in residential living - define trends in contemporary organic architecture and residential living - obtain and process answers from owners and authors of chosen buildings within survey - analysis of organic house ( houses) in city planning and landscape - publication of catalogue focused on organic contemporary European houses - article about contemporary organic architecture and residential living will be published in 2012 on archiweb page

In the past, people's living in Yi-lan was closely connected to nature because of agriculture. Modernization has made farm-based works replaced by other industries. As a result, living has gradually lost its close relationship with nature... In this thesis, using a real situation in Yi-lan as an example, I want to propose a new way of living through architectural design to reconnect our life to nature.

In-depth interviews were conducted in this study, and six adolescents with early onset scoliosis were interviewed to understand their subjective feelings and experience interpretations, analyzing the impact of the illness on their development, and investigating the demonstrations of resiliencies in the course of the illness. Adolescents with scoliosis experience much physiological discomfort, including pain and soreness, poor sleep quality, limited mobility, or symptoms caused by organ compression such as shortness of breath, bed-wetting, and difficulties in eating. The treatment experiences of adolescents with scoliosis are continuous processes extending alongside their conditions; the process is divided into four stages in this study: (1) a frantic search of medical help; (2) frustration and helplessness during the treatment; (3) unavoidable surgery; (4) impacts and adaption after the treatment. The adolescents with the illness have the same responsibilities to develop themselves as normal adolescents do, but have to face different pressures and concerns; moreover, with their life choices revolving around the illness, there are considerable levels of limitations. Studies have found the adolescents to be: (1) disturbed in body images; (2) deprived of autonomy due to overprotection; (3) bullied and rejected in relationships; (4) unable to handle medical treatments and academic work at the same time; (5) affected in career choices: the adolescents’ career choices are limited by their health, and their parents also have lower expectations for their career development; (6) pessimistic when it comes to considering marriage or partner choices: they worry that their body limits may become dating obstacles, and that they may not have be able to have children normally. After the adolescents go through the journey of the illness, what are the resiliencies supporting them through the difficulties, and how do the resiliencies impact their life and future? Studies have found that protecting factors that can influence recovery include: (1) personal protecting factors: independence, an understanding that hard work is required and courage in venturing, positivity in facing the pain from the illness, resilience, the will to survive the illness and figure out ways to cope with it; (2) family protecting factors: emotional support (guidance in positive thinking and unconditional psychological support from the family), instrumental support (body care assistance); (3) community protecting factors: school environmental support (opportunities to create positive experiences, appropriate attention from teachers, a sense of safety, acceptance and affection from peers, which can provide a sense of belonging), medical environmental support (professional advice and assistance from the medical staff, support and cheering from the medical staff, medical financial support to alleviate family burdens, empathy and the power of encouragement between patient friends). The results of recovering strength demonstration can be divided into four aspects: (1) adjustment of habitual mindsets and the reconstruction of life meaning; (2) feeling for others and the cultivation of the ability to be forgiving and have empathy; (3) eagerness in helping others; (4) exhibiting a life attitude embracing feelings of gratitude, and possessing a stronger appreciation of the moment and courage in expressing love and gratefulness.

Scholz, Joachim. "Living in Harmony with Nature: A Post-Human Analysis of Consumers’ Relationships with Nature." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1974/8609.

Full text
Abstract:
Living in harmony with nature is a pervasive ideology, or cultural blueprint, of how a "sustainable future,” a "good society,” and a "fulfilled life" would look like. However, this notion of harmony with nature is highly paradoxical, as consumers often want and even must dominate and control nature. The current thesis explores consumers’ desires of living in harmony with nature through a post-human analysis of how backcountry hikers negotiate tensions between utilitarian and romantic discourses of nature vis-à-vis their experience of material forces of nature. Through conceptualizing nature as an active actor in a symmetric assemblage of material and cultural entities (i.e., nature agency), this thesis contributes to our understanding of the human/nature relationship, materialism, and sustainable consumption. Findings are presenting through three interrelated themes. The first theme highlights how hikers appropriate romantic discourses by seeking harmony in a nature that is perceived as external to civilization. Noting the contradiction that hikers’ quest for being in harmony with a “romantic nature” oftentimes exposes them to higher physical dangers in material nature, the subsequent themes explore how harmony can arise when hikers have to struggle with physical dangers of nature. Focusing on physical dangers that are experienced in material nature, theme 2 finds that hikers’ relationship with nature is highly ambivalent: They strive to experience “more nature and less civilization”, but also “more civilization and less nature.” The third theme explores how meanings of nature and technology emerge from fluidly shifting assemblages, finding that the same technological resources can both distract from and enable feelings of harmony with nature. These findings contribute to consumer research by broadening our understanding of the human/nature relationship and by challenging previous notions (Canniford and Shankar 2013) that technology and civilization must always betray consumers’ experiences of “romantic nature.” Furthermore, the notions of nature agency and that no single actor can unilaterally shape the assemblage of heterogeneous entities contribute to the emerging material turn in consumer research. Finally, this post-human analysis of consumers’ relationships with nature offers theoretical and practical implications for sustainable consumption and sustainable marketing.

Balthip, Quantar. "Achieving harmony of mind : a grounded theory study of people living with HIV/AIDS in the Thai context : a thesis presented in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing, Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand." 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10179/1364.

Full text
Abstract:
The aims in this Straussian grounded theory inquiry were to gain better understanding of the meaning of spirituality and of the process of spiritual development in people living with HIV/AIDS in the Thai context. In Western contexts, spirituality has been described as the essence of human existence. However, in the Thai context, where Buddhist teachings underpin the understanding of life as body and mind, rather than as body, mind and spirit, the concept of spirituality is little understood by lay people. This gap in understanding called for an inductive approach to knowledge generation. HIV/AIDS is a life-altering and deeply stigmatized disease that results in significant distress and calls into question the meaning and purpose of life for many who are diagnosed with the disease. Nevertheless, some Thai people living with the disease successfully adjust their lives to their situation and are able to live with peace and harmony. These findings raise questions firstly as to the process by which those participants achieved peace and harmony despite the nature of the disease and the limited access to ARV drugs at the time of that study; and secondly as to whether or not the peace and harmony that they described could be linked to the Western concept of spirituality. Data were gathered from 33 participants from the South of Thailand, who had lived with HIV/AIDS for 5 years or more, were aged 18 years or older, and were willing and able to participate in this study. Purposive, snowball and theoretical sampling techniques were used to select participants. Data collection using in-depth interviews and participant observation methods was undertaken over a nine-month period in 2006. The process of data analysis was guided by Strauss and Corbin’s grounded theory and resulted in the development of a substantive theory. The substantive theory of Achieving Harmony of Mind comprises two categories: struggling to survive and living life. Each category has two subcategories: encountering distress (tukjai) and overcoming distress (longjai), and accomplishing harmony in oneself and discovering an ultimate meaning in life respectively. The metaphor of ‘an eclipse’ was used to describe the process of the development of mind of people living with HIV/AIDS and represents the extent to which the individual’s mind is overshadowed by the diagnosis of HIV/AIDS and its consequences. Diagnosis of this disease turns participants’ lives upside down. Yet selective disclosure of one’s HIV status, resulting in the receiving of support and connectedness with others, enables participants to find meaning and purpose in life that enables them to recover the will to live and to attempt to stabilise their lives by learning to live with HIV/AIDS. Most participants were able to adjust their mind to accept their new situation and find new self value enabling them to feel free from the shadow of HIV/AIDS and live life with HIV/AIDS as normal. Fewer participants found an ultimate meaning in life – consistent with Buddhist teachings about suffering and uncertainty, and the impermanence of life that links with an understanding of ‘nonself’ – that enabled them to obtain peace and harmony of mind (kwarmsa-ngobjai). It is this latter stage that represents spirituality in Buddhist terms. This form of spirituality differs significantly from that found in other religions because it does not involve an engagement with a divine and transcendent reality. The findings of this study enhance knowledge about spirituality in the Thai context, and provide a guide for health professionals and education curricula with the aim of achieving more holistic care for patients.

Santo, Rita Alexandra de Sousa. "Construção do Habitat através do Slow Living." Master's thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.26/25490.

Full text
Abstract:

Anspach, Philip. "The indigenous rights of personality with particular reference to the Swazi in the kingdom of Swaziland." Thesis, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/1911.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was undertaken to establish whether rights of personality are known in indigenous law. Since indigenous law differs not only between tribes but is also affected by the degree of exposure to Western values, a micro-study has been done in a semi-rural environment in the Kingdom of Swaziland to establish to what extent own value systems have been influenced or altered when Western legal concepts are utilised. The information, obtained by interviewing a panel of experts, was compared with the available literature. During the process of gathering information, the aims of the research were not only to describe how the legal principles function, but also to take note of those socio-cultural processes which function outside of the law. Rights of personality were studied against a background of the culture and way of life of the peoples concerned. The importance of culture has been acknowledged in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, wherein the recognition and application of indigenous law generally rests on a constitutionally protected right to culture. Whilst the identifiable rights of personality may generally be classified according to specialised legal systems, the separation of rights to good name and to dignity may be inappropriate in the indigenous sphere. Dignity in indigenous legal systems is to be viewed as a comprehensive right of personality, into which should be subsumed the right to good name and reputation in the community. It is such dignity, embracing the ubuntu quality of humanness that is protected as a comprehensive indigenous right of personality. Although the indigenous law of personality is showing some signs of adapting to new developments, there is also proof that the established legal principles and human values are being retained. However, these changes are unique and are neither typically traditional nor Western. The indigenous law of personality, operating in a changing social environment, has to retain its flexibility and adaptability in order to remain ”living” law for the peoples concerned.

Full text
Abstract:
The universal global picture of the world is full of pictures of the world of many nations, related to a common value background. Global values are essentially anthropocentric. They are related to man, his life, security, traditions, faith, rights and freedoms. The picture of the Ukrainian world is affected by it’s psychotype: a peaceful emotional introvert, an individualist who evaluates events and people through the criterion of truth known as "humane and inhumane." Tolerance, which does not accept the extremes of universal love, occupies an important place in the aestheticized picture of the Ukrainian world, because everything must be in harmony and balance. Happiness for Ukrainians is to have their own fenced home, with a farm, with everything living and non-living that is there; to have a carefree life on one's own land; to live in harmony with the demands of one's own nature. Also to adequately perceive oneself and one's own capabilities. Those nations that are unable to adequately assess themselves are unhappy and therefore aggressive. Being aggressive extroverts, thay want to impose their own model of worldview on everyone else. Having experienced more than one stressor in history, Ukrainians came out of various trials and became even more hardened. Key words: happiness, Ukrainians, worldview, psychotype, values

Full text
Abstract:
The mechanical behavior of eukaryotic cell components is critical to cell mobility, division, signaling, and proliferation. Cell components are in such harmony with each other that often mechanical testing of individual components produces less meaningful results than testing performed within living cells. Moreover, cell components are constantly undergoing growth and remodeling, normally through polymerization and depolymerization. An appropriate experimental and modeling framework is therefore essential for cell mechanics. In this study, a special atomic force microscope (AFM) with controlled adhesion area of the cell to a substrate was used to probe the mechanical response of cells to an external force. This experimental set up enables direct control of the applied force and precise measurement of the cell penetration by the AFM tip. A modeling framework that combines the displacement field with the applied force/stress obtained with the AFM is developed to estimate the mechanical properties of each cell component. The tribological relevance of this research is the viscoelastic deformation of cell components under different contact loads.

Abstract:
" The current research aims to identify the nature and reality of peaceful coexistence in the city of Mosul, by determining its levels and assessing its social dimensions among its various components in the city, for the purpose of reaching the possibility of developing the feelings of its members and activating their role in achieving harmony and harmony, accepting the other, living in luxury, etc. Positive in providing stability and social and political security and identifying the resulting problems. As the importance of this research is revealed in revealing the basic dimensions of peaceful coexistence between the various social components in the city of Mosul and identifying the manifestations of these dimensions and their factors depending on measuring the extent of the cohesion of individuals and accepting or rejecting coexistence among them. This is because identifying this reality and the dimensions, manifestations and factors that support and affect it and are related to it would facilitate the consolidation of its activities and social relations between these social components in the social reality of the city. Not to mention that, the contemporary Iraqi street, specifically the city of Mosul after the American occupation of Iraq, witnessed problems and disturbances that humanity has not witnessed throughout the history of its civilized development, which affected social construction, and these problems crystallized and were born due to several reasons and accumulated reasons and silence their shape and content in the Iraqi scene, so the individuals in the city. They are more influential because they are more interacting with each other in social reality, and it is from these bases that the importance of the subject we are studying comes from. "
