King, Charles David. "Chadwick, Liverpool and the bomb." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 1997. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.266221.

Full text
Abstract:
The author intends to set out in this thesis Chadwick's scientific and diplomatic contribution to the development of the atomic bombs that ended World War Two. The far-reaching consequences of Chadwick's efforts to establish a nuclear physics research prograrmne, both academic and commercial, in austere post-war Britain are also shown. A brief history of Chadwick's academic career, at Manchester, Cambridge and Liverpool Universities is given, which indicate how his intimate knowledge of atomic and nuclear physics culminated in the building of a state-of-the-art 37" pole diameter cyclotron at Liverpool University. The help that Lawrence and his colleagues generously and freely gave to Chadwick is also acknowledged. The crucial role of the Liverpool cyclotron in determining the necessary nuclear fission cross-section measurements needed to establish the feasibility of an atomic bomb, is also discussed. Chadwick's precise and penetrating insight of the bomb's feasibility, was presented in the final Maud Report that was sent, prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbour, to the U.S.A. It was this Report that convinced the Americans that an atomic bomb was a feasible and obtainable objective and started, as a matter of urgency, American fission bomb research. A brief history of fission and the events surrounding its discovery is also presented, as is a comparative discussion on the German and Japanese progress in atomic bomb research in World War Two. It would not have been possible to give specific details of many of the above events without primary source material to substantiate them The author has located a large number of previously un-published letters, documents and photographs - only some of which have been included - but all of which are being incorporated into a Chadwick Archive at Liverpool University.

Forsberg, Gabriella. "Liverpool Care Pathway ur ett sjuksköterskeperspektiv." Thesis, Ersta Sköndal högskola, Institutionen för vårdvetenskap, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:esh:diva-3054.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: The Liverpool Care Pathway is a guidance of care for the dying patient. It was created to transfer the hospice model of care into other hospital settings. LCP provides a pathway in communication within the multidisciplinary team, with relatives and the dying patient. LCP gives guidance for doctors to prescribe medication for the most common symptoms that can appear in the dying phase to improve symptom management. LCP is today used in several places in Sweden within different frameworks of medical facilities. Aim: The aim was to illustrate the use of Liverpool Care Pathway in an acute hospital setting from a nurse perspective. Methods: This essay is a systematic literature review and the data was based on nine articles of published research. The published articles were found in four different databases. These were: Pubmed, Chinhal, Medline and ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Source. The data was then analyzed and structured into different main themes, and was then compiled into a result. The articles were based on studies made in England, New Zealand and Italy. Results: When analyzing the articles six different main themes emerged. These were: communication, documentation, increased self-confidents, medical guidelines and care, improved end-of-life care and improved continuity in the care of the dying. Discussion: The studies relevance to Sweden was discussed because none of them had been made in Sweden. The main themes were related to previous research and to Katie Eriksson's concept of suffering and care.

Baird, Christina Jane. "The Liverpool China trade, 1834-1880." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 1997. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/28579/.

Full text
Abstract:
The nucleus of this thesis is the Liverpool China Trade Collection. This exists in Liverpool in store and has never been exhibited as a whole. Much of this collection is provenanced to local families with strong shipping connections. The examination of this collection is preceded by an analysis of the data on shipping and trade with the aim of showing the importance of the port of Liverpool in the latter part of the nineteenth century after the release of the East India Company franchise and the opening of the Suez Canal. The latter event had a dramatic effect on Liverpool because it coincided with new developments in the compound steam engine, the potential of which was exploited to the full by Alfred Holt, a Liverpool shipowner. The study falls into two main parts. First, the historical background is sketched, revealing, amongst other factors, the influence of American traders, who in the nineteenth century anticipated developments in shipping, for example in clipper-ship design, as well as providing a model market for trade goods from China the demands of which were reflected by the tastes and demands of the prosperous Liverpool merchants. The shipping data are amplified by reference to the family correspondence of Robert Thomson, who was first a clipper captain and later captain of one of the Holt steamers, and also by the diary of Alexander Kidd, whose service with Alfred Holt's company lasted over most of the period under survey only being terminated by his untimely death at sea. Second, the thesis examines in detail the collection itself, which is unique in this country because it is unusually well provenanced to Liverpool families, enabling us to trace the sort of private trading which was going on at the behest of individuals as well as on behalf of the companies who were importing tea as their main commodity. This part of the thesis contains a report on the oriental collections of the National Museums and Galleries on Merseyside, discussing the collections in relation to a neglected phase of China Trade art and in the light of locally sourced documentation. An account, and possible explanation, is offered of the ways in which the nature of the China Trade changed in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The thesis examines the collection itself, illustrates the nature of the objects which were being collected, often by or on behalf of the great mercantile families of Liverpool, and casts light not only upon the nationwide taste for Chinese products together with shifts in patronage and consumerism which developed at this time but also upon the effect trade contacts, the establishment of new colonial communities on the Chinese mainland and the emergence of an identifiable treaty port culture had upon developments in Chinese export art.

Full text
Abstract:
The Small Telescopes Installed at the Liverpool Telescope (STILT) have been in operation since March 2009, collecting wide field data from their position, at the Liverpool Telescope on La Palma. The system consists of a set of two wide field imaging cameras, known as SkycamT and SkycamZ. They provide fields of view of 21x210 and Ix 1 0, along with limits of 12th and 18th in R-band magnitude. The work in this thesis describes the methodology used to create an image analysis pipeline and database to store the photometric results contained in the images produced by these cameras. Such a database is capable of providing invaluable data for the study of many stellar and transient sources. The optimisation of the camera software, as well as modifications to the hardware of the cameras are presented, along with a discussion of the imaging methodologies used in the creation of the data pipeline, which involved specific setup for the case of wide field imaging. For the pipeline, the method for photometric calibration and the overall process structure will be presented along with the schema of the database, and the justifications for these choices. Work has also been carried out to define the performance of the system in a photometric, astrometric and computational sense. Abstract:

Cocks, Matthew Anthony. "Institutional thickness and Liverpool exploration of a methodology." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2010. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.526838.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis operationalizes the concept of 'institutional thickness' and evaluates its utility as a framework with which to gUide empirical research. The institutional thickness concept was introduced in 1994 by Ash Amin and Nigel Thrift and is concerned with the ability of a locality to chart its own economic destiny in the context of global capitalism. Specifically, it focuses upon the institutions operating in areas, and how their collective efforts at economic development can have a bearing upon that area's economic success. They define four elements of institutional thickness: 1. A strong institutional presence 2. High levels of interactions between institutions 3. Sharply defined structures of domination and patterns of coalition 4. Mutual awareness that they are involved in a common enterprise However, studies surrounding the concept in the years since have not proved any obvious link between the presence of these four factors and a resulting economic prosperity. Indeed, it has been suggested that an area can be institutionally 'thin' and prosperous, as well as institutionally 'thick' and unprosperous. Nevertheless, the majority of authors agree that the concept provides a useful way of framing the issues involved. In line with this proposition, Andrew Coulson and Caterina Ferrario (2007) developed a replicable methodological framework for the investigation of institutional thickness in a locality. This comprised of a series of quantitative and qualitative indicators and was based upon Amin and Thrift's four factors mentioned above. This thesis develops, applies and evaluates their methodology within a general consideration of the utility of the institutional thickness concept as a framework for empirical research. The case of Liverpool, UK, is investigated across a 30 year time horizon - 1978 to 2008 - using an expanded version of the methodology, based upon Coulson and Ferrario's assessment as to how it could be improved, as well as the commentaries of other authors. In testing the framework, a number of theoretical concepts are drawn upon. These include 'regulation theory', theories of political ideology, theories surrounding local governance and Bob Jessop's 'Strategic Relational Approach'. Further, 'critical realism' also provides an ontological and methodological basis for the study, as well as a series of concepts which are utilised during evaluation. Although the primary focus of the thesis is in evaluating the institutional thickness framework, the investigation into institutional developments, roles and interactions in Liverpool resulted in a series of detailed empirical findings. These findings are considered in the context of the theoretical concepts mentioned above, and a judgement is made as to how institutional thickness has evolved in the city during the 30 year period. Finally, the concluding chapter to the thesis suggests areas where the institutional thickness framework could be improved, and also provides some general conclusions surrounding the role of individuals in economic regeneration processes and considerations as to the public's perception of the institutions investigated in the study.

Wilkinson, Stephen Brian. "The ecology of the benthos in Liverpool Docks." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 1995. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.261963.

Full text
Abstract:
A broadscale survey of the benthos was carried out in the docks around Liverpool and the results indicated that the walls of the majority of the South Docks were dominated by Mytilus edulis. This species tended to be less abundant in docks close to the intake from the Mersey while Molgula manmattensis tended to be more abundant at these sites. These differences may be due to a combination of either increased suspended solids or decreased phytoplankton. The walls of Albert, Queens and Princes Docks were surveyed over a three year period. The results indicated that the abundance of Mytilus was relatively constant between years. Other more ephemeral species, such as Ciona, showed considerable variation both within and between years. Closer examination of the Mytilus population structure has indicated that it was dominated by one or two cohorts which had settled in 1988 - 1989. Much less recruitment has occurred subsequently. Reasons for this lack of recruitment are examined, however, the most likely explanations are increased predation from Carcinus and/or intraspecific interactions from the adult bed, either filtering out Mytilus larvae or reducing food supply to new settlers. Monitoring of the zooplankton indicated considerable temporal and spatial variation, despite the fact that the docks are effectively a closed ecosystem. The observed variations are attributed to either adult or larval behaviour or changes in primary production affecting secondary production. Tiles have been used to follow the pattern of annual succession and the effect of timing of available space on this pattern of succession. Results were integrated with changes observed in the wall benthos and variations in larval supply. Considerable differences were observed in the community that developed on suspended tiles, tiles fixed to the dock wall and cleared areas of the dock wall. One of the primary factors affecting this was thought to be reduced food supply on the wall due to the dense filter feeding assemblage there. No evidence was found of any strong interspecific interactions in the successional sequence. Rather, the community composition was typical for the time of year. The community development is described with regard to the life-history strategies of the species in the fouling assemblage. Tiles were also used to look at the annual pattern of algal settlement. This indicated that diatoms were the principal settlers early in the year, brown ephemerals such as Giffordia and Punctaria during spring and green ephemerals such as Enteromorpha and Cladophora over the summer period. Amphipods were the dominant grazers of this assemblage. Tiles left in place for two to three months initially developed dense algal growth but this was subsequently replaced by a cover of Botryllus. This change was thought to be accelerated by the grazing amphipods. No perennial algae were recorded in the docks; reasons for this are proposed. Finally, an assessment is made of the overall stability of the benthic ecosystem found in the docks around Liverpool and a number of possible management options, which could be used to improve the stability, are suggested.

Boyle, Raymond. "Football and cultural identity in Glasgow and Liverpool." Thesis, University of Stirling, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/2162.

Full text
Abstract:
This project examines the relationship between football, the media and the constitution and reconstitution of cultural identities within Glasgow and Liverpool. It explores the extent to which a range of contemporary religious, political and national identities can be understood by focusing on the role that football and the support for particular clubs, play in their formation. Throughout, there is a concern with the relationship between supporters, the clubs, the media and identity-formation. There is also a realisation of the importance of placing this material within an histo rical framework, which emphasises how political, economic and social changes have all shaped the specific relationships in each city. This is achieved through the use of a number of case studies. The geographical areas used for the studies are the west of Scotland and the north-west of England, with specific attention focused on the cities of Glasgow and Liverpool and the football supporters within these cities. There has long been a strong connection between football and a range of social identities in these two cities. This study examines the theoretical debates regarding issues of the formation of identity in contemporary society, and argues for the need to have contextually grounded studies informing these broader theoretical discussions. This project, focusing on religious, political and cultural expressions of collective identity, emphasises the continual need to be wary of unproblematically allocating a central role to the media in any process of identity-formation. It suggests that in the cities of Glasgow and Liverpool today a range of more socially and historically grounded factors are crucial in understanding the configurations of collective expression which football support provides for many in these cities.

Pace-Sigge, Michael. "Evidence of lexical priming in spoken Liverpool English." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2010. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/7873/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is about two things. Firstly, drawing on Michael Hoey’s Lexical Priming, it aims to extend the research represented in that book – into the roots of the concept of priming and into how far Hoey’s claims are valid for spoken English corpora. The thesis traces the development of the concept of priming, which was initially work done by computational analysts, psychologists and psycho-linguists, to present a clearer picture of what priming means and in how far the phenomenon of priming has been proven to be a salient model of how man’s mind works. Moving on from that, I demonstrate how this model can be adapted to provide a model of language generation and use as Sinclair (2004) and Hoey (2003 etc.) have done, leading to the linguistic theory of Lexical Priming. Secondly, throughout the thesis two speech communities are compared: a general community of English speakers throughout the UK and a specific community, namely the Liverpool English (Scouse) speakers of Liverpool, UK. In the course of this work, a socio-economic discussion highlights the notion of Liverpool Exceptionalism and, grounded in the theory of lexical priming, I aim to show through corporaled research that this Exceptionalism manifests itself, linguistically, through (amongst other things) specific use of particular words and phrases. I thus research the lexical use of Liverpool speakers in direct comparison to the use by other UK English speakers. I explore the use of “I” and people, indefinite pronouns (anybody, someone etc.), discourse markers (like, really, well, yeah etc.) amongst other key items of spoken discourse where features of two varieties of English may systematically differ. The focus is on divergence found in their collocation, colligation, semantic preference and their lexically driven grammatical patterns. Comparing casual spoken Liverpool English with the casual spoken (UK) English found in the Macmillan and BNC subcorpora, this study finds primings in the patterns of language use that appear in all three corpora. Beyond that, there are primings of language use that appear to be specific to the Liverpool English corpus. With Scouse as the example under the microscope, this is an exploration into how speakers in different speech communities use the same language – but differently. It is not only the phonetic realisation, or the grammatical or lexical differences that define them as a separate speech group – it is the fact that they use the same lexicon in a distinct way. This means that lexical use, rather than just lexical stock, is a characterising feature of dialects.

Bertali, Nunzia Di Cristo. "Liverpool, 'the world in the city' : subjective and objective perception evaluations of the integration of woman immigrants in Liverpool, 2001 to 2009." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2011. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/6012/.

Full text
Abstract:
The study focuses on foreign women who have been living in Liverpool from the year 2001. The investigation mainly analyzes the subjective perception of integration and the objective outcome. Literature has neglected, in general, the role of women in migration and in particular the importance of the integration of women, in the host society, for the well being of the whole family. It is often assumed that if the local Authorities adopt policies that respect diversity the immigrants will automatically feel integrated and become a vital part of the wider society. The responses obtained from 100 English women were compared to the ones received from 100 foreigners and 23 respondents who were born in the United Kingdom. The women from the UK: Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, were considered as foreigners because people who are born in any of the countries that form part of a Nation State feel strongly about their ethnicity. This research tries to discover whether the perception of the women contacted reflects the objective outcome of the survey that has been conducted with the help of a questionnaire and evaluated by using a purposely created tool. The tool enabled the construction of a table to show the discovered differences. They show that there is a marked difference between the subjective perception and the objective outcome of integration. It is therefore acceptable to speculate that foreign women in Liverpool are integrated in their "diaspora space" but not within the wider society of the city. If the mothers are not integrated is unlikely that their children will be. This condition can, as a first consequence, cause confusion in the children and perhaps lead to their rejection of the local culture and, secondly, prevent any sort of integration that in turn should avert the formation of a cohesive society. Integration in the wider society can only be achieved if the subjects speak the local language. However the learning of English in the country of origin will not encourage the absorption of the culture of the country where the language has originated. Therefore fluency in the host language could be another aspect encouraging the creation of self-segregated communities.

Abstract:
Using The Bluecoat Arts Centre as a case study this thesis discusses the emergence anddevelopment of live-art practices in Liverpool since 1979 and analyses how these practiceshave developed in Liverpool in relation to local conditions, the national institutionalinfrastructure for live art, and dominant discourse around live-art practice. The thesis provides pragmatic recommendations for improving the sustainability, diversityand development of live-art practices in Liverpool and is based on analysis, discussion andevaluation of my first-hand professional experience and in-depth knowledge of programming, presenting and supporting live art in the city from the year 2000. Analysis and discussion ofcomparative live-art activity in Manchester offers an expanded context within whichassertions and recommendations are tested and evidenced in order to provide useful insightsinto the institutional infrastructure for the live-art sector at a regional level.

Abstract:
The main argument of this thesis is that racism exists in the National Health Service and that it is experienced by black people as consumers and as employees of that service. The concept 'racism' has been widely used since the early '70s as describing prejudice allied to the power to perpetuate and institutionalise such prejudice, and there is now a growing awareness of the pervasiveness of racism within British society. But that awareness is not reflected in the kinds of reasons given to explain the experiences of Black people in the National Health Service in particular or within British society in general. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate to what extent such explanations conceal the racism experienced by black people in the National Health Service. Our work has revealed that at the consumer level the cultural framework has been extensively employed to explain conditions such as rickets, infant mortality and mental illness among racial minorities. Such explanations coming, as they do, from professional experts claiming to base their pronouncements on scientific objectivity carry considerable weight and thus support racism. They look back from the present to the historical development (or un- or under-development) of peoples and justify what has sedimented to 'common-sense' which all white Britons have about black people in general. We have argued in this thesis that the cultural issue serves as a decoy away from the central issue of black health provision, namely racism. This racism is again reflected very starkly in the response of the NationalHealth Service to sickle cell disease, a specific condition virtually exclusive to black people. Using Liverpool as an area of reflection we have argued that although social, political and economic factors disadvantage working class communities in both incidence of illness and access to health services, black people are even more disadvantaged because of racism. In the field of employment the traditional image of black nurses as 'immigrants' has persisted and is reflected in cultural explanations for their lack of advancement within the profession. We have argued that such nonadvancement as seen in difficulty of access to qualification and poor chances of promotion has a great deal to do with the fact of being black in a racist institution which does not see blacks as having roles in positions of authority and power. Racism here, however, operates through hidden mechanisms which are used to perpetuate discrimination. Our aim in the . section dealing with this area has been to analyse the ways in which such mechanisms work. Our research has revealed that racism at this level remains for the most part covert, operating through the institutional power conferred on persons In positions of authority. Decisions taken by such persons are not subject to open scrutiny, thus black nurses can be disadvantaged through institutional devices which conceal information

Abstract:
The PhD thesis is focused on the hydrogeology and geochemistry of the surface and groundwater in Liverpool area. It provides a detailed understanding of the effect of the structural geology on the groundwater flow and the geographical variation in the groundwater geochemistry. Moreover, the studies have extended the research towards the geochemical evolution of the fresh and saline groundwaters and surface water. The main conclusions are that the major structural elements, especially the NNW-SSE major faults and a gentle NE-SW fold, have subdivided the aquifer into discreet six hydrogeological sub-basins. As a result of this, a single groundwater flow direction in the aquifer is not likely existed; multiple local flow directions are expected instead. The recharge of the aquifer sub-basins is mainly by vertical percolation while the lateral mixing between the different water types and the inland invasion of seawater are limited by the major faults. The aquifer has two major types of groundwaters. Fresh groundwater occupies one part, generally a few kilometres from the coast and saline groundwater in another part that has undergone seawater intrusion from the Mersey Estuary. The recharge of the fresh groundwater is mainly localised from surface waters (originally rainfall). The recent recharged groundwaters are expected in spatially restricted areas with low salinity and they broadly resemble surface waters except they are more acidic possibly due to C02 dissolution and dissociation, nitrification or sulphide oxidation. This immature groundwater evolved into the regionally dominant groundwaters through a combination of congruent dissolution of dolomite, cation exchange and sulphate mineral dissolution happening in the Sherwood Sandstone aquifer. Due to locally advanced stage of water rock interaction, the regionally dominant groundwater has evolved into higher salinity fresh groundwater at the southern end of a southward flowing compartment. Close to the urban heart of Liverpool the groundwater has undergone local pollution as reflected by the elevated salinity, Cl, S04 and N03 concentrations, The origin of the saline groundwater is mainly due to seawater intrusion based on the similarity in chemical composition between the saline groundwater and River Mersey water. This study has shown that highly saline groundwater has been expected in the Sherwood sandstone aquifer underneath Liverpool and close to the River Mersey. From the previous and present works the saline groundwater in this part of the aquifer mainly due to saline water intrusion from Mersey Estuary. This has been based on the geographic distribution and chemical affinity between the saline groundwater and Mersey Estuary water. The invaded Estuary water experienced a wide range of geochemical processes that deviates the composition of the water away from being a simple physical mixture between low salinity groundwater and seawater. During progressive invasion by seawater, it seems that cation exchange (Na-capture and Ca release) occurs first with a small amount of carbonate and even anhydrite cement dissolution. Next, cation exchange becomes relatively less important but bacterial sulphate reduction starts to occur. The final process during the later stages of saline invasion seems to be dolomitization of indigenous calcite accompanying more advanced bacterial sulphate reduction and with relatively minor cation exchange. The chemistry of the surface water has been studied in small river systems in the area (River Alt, Downholland Brook and River Alt). The main recharge of these surface waters is local rainfall. Dissolution of calcite and weathering of silicate minerals are the most common processes operating in a higher relief river basin floored by Sherwood Sandstone (Calder River regime), while the abundance of gypsum and calcite with silicate in the Downholland Brook and River Alt bed rocks explain the increase of the total dissolved salts and ionic composition of the former two streams waters. The continuous influx of atmospheric CO2 and H+ ions from the dissociation of H2C03 increases the ability of these waters dissolving minerals in contact especially carbonates and silicates. The concentration and lateral variation of the nitrate concentration in the surface and groundwaters have been studied trying to assess its possible source and fate. The results reveal that a significant part of nitrate in surface and groundwater is coming from the application of fertilizers in addition to urban waste water in the highly populated areas. Nitrification process in the soil zone transforms the N-compounds (eg. NH4) into nitrate. The direct drainage of soil water to the river course carries high nitrate to the river waters. The low nitrate concentration in the locally-recharged groundwater is mainly due to natural denitrification processes probably in the unsaturated and saturated zone however the high abstraction rate of the groundwater could be responsible for yielding water with high nitrate concentration.

Abstract:
The late Victorian and Edwardian period saw ritual become increasingly important in political life. Towns and cities were involved in conscious efforts to construct and project attractive images of themselves. These images were intended to encourage a sense of civic patriotism. Ceremonies, honorific titles, public events and civic architecture were essays in the invention of tradition. However, historians have applied the concept of the invention of tradition unevenly. Previous research has dwelt on the construction of images. Perceptions of official images and responses to them have been overlooked. This thesis employs a model which recognises images as processes with foundaitons in human relationships. It evaluates images in terms of intentionality, power, context and participation. The participative dimension is of particular importance, because images aimed to instil a sense of civic patriotism which would encourage citizens to make emotional and financial investments in their communities. Liverpool attained the status of a city in 1880. The civic ideology of the city was dominated by images of commerce and by notions of Imperial duty and public service which celebrated commercial virtues. Many aspects of urban life were shaped by civic image. This study does not confine itself to public events and pageantry, instead it explores such spheres as municipal art policy, Liverpool's public health record, the attempts to extend the city boundaries, civic hagiography, the foundation of the University, women and the ideal of citizenship and the influence of football on civic identity to demonstrate the importance of images in the city's social, political and institutional history. The purpose of the thesis is three-fold: to suggest that civic image opens new perspectives on Liverpudlian history, to discover why there were more conscious attempts to construct civic image and to restore participation to the study of civic image by unravelling the connections between image and patriotism.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: There is a need of good palliative care of the growing elderly population. Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP) is a care program that was developed for palliative care in other facilities than hospice departments. There is lack of evidence on the effect of the LCP, therefore it has been phased out in many countries. Objective: To investigate the advantages and disadvantages of Liverpool Care Pathway, factors affecting the implementation and if the LCP can be used in the care of dying elderly non-cancer patients. Methods: A literature review containing 15 scientific original articles. Articles were searched in PubMed. All of the articles were of high or medium quality. Results: Several studies showed that communication improved. Treatment of symptoms and pain increased in frequency. Examinations and blood sampling decreased. Psychosocial support for patient and family improved. Management of medication was safer with the LCP. Shortcomings regarding documentation were discussed. The quality of implementation had influence on how the LCP would be carried out. Factors affecting implementation was time, money, personal views, leadership and support. Conclusion: The results of the literature review shows improvements on the communication, medication management, symptom management and psychosocial support to patients and families. The documentation process requires further improvement. For LCP to work optimally implementation it requires careful implementation with clear leadership and proper training. There are parts of the LCP that could be used in the care of dying elderly non-cancer patients, but more research is needed in this area. Keywords: LCP, Palliative Care, Elderly Care, Implementation,
Artiklarna söktes i databasen PubMed.

Abstract:
This thesis draws upon evidence from over twenty archives in the UK and US. It uses the context of Liverpool, arguably the ‘second city of empire’ because of its extensive social, economic, and political networks overseas, to enhance knowledge of British imperialism during the American Revolutionary era (1763-1783).Part One analyses the ‘gentlemanly capitalist’ paradigm of P.J. Cain and A.G. Hopkins. In brief, this theory argues that the landed elite and financial-commercial services, concentrated upon the City of London, held sway over British imperial policy-making. This was chiefly because these interests were regarded as being ‘gentlemanly’, or socially acceptable, to the landed elite. In contrast, northern manufacturers were less influential in the imperial decision-making process. By working longer hours and being associated with labour unrest, industrialists were not perceived as being sufficiently gentlemanly by the ruling order. My dissertation tests this theory within the context of the late-eighteenth century. This is an original contribution to knowledge because most, although not all, studies of Cain and Hopkins focus upon later periods. Hanoverian Liverpool is an ideal test case because the town had a mixed economy. It contained a manufacturing base, served a wider industrial hinterland, and, because Liverpool was linked to the Atlantic empire, spawned a mercantile service sector community with interests in commerce and finance. This thesis generally supports Cain and Hopkins, but with some modifications. One of these is to view the late-eighteenth century as a period of emerging gentlemanly capitalism, referred to here as ‘proto-gentlemanly capitalism’. The fact that Liverpool merchants and the local landed elite were not yet fully socially integrated, is one of several reasons why the town lacked success in influencing imperial policy-making between 1763 and 1783.Warfare was synonymous with the Hanoverian empire. Therefore, Part Two expands our knowledge of the empire at home, or how the American War (1775-1783) impacted upon Liverpool economically, socially, and culturally. Previous histories of the economic impact of this conflict upon Liverpool concentrated upon overseas trade, and therefore stressed its negative consequences. However, this thesis looks at both overseas trade and domestic business. It paints a more nuanced picture, and, by using Liverpool as a case study, shows that the impact of warfare upon the UK economy produced mixed results. Finally, this thesis considers the socio-cultural impact of the war upon Liverpool. In the process, it demonstrates that military conflict affected both the northern and southern regions of Britain during the eighteenth century. Militarisation of the local community prompted discussions regarding the boundaries of national and local government. The War of Independence split opinion, thereby revealing divergent trends within British imperial ideology. Finally, on balance, the American War cultivated a ‘British’ national identity in the town (although there were still other identities present).

Abstract:
Some trace elements and various PCB congeners were determined in superficial sediments from Liverpool Bay. Some sediment parameters were also determined for a better understanding of the distribution of these contaminants. Lower amounts of fine particles were found in sediments from the southern area of the sampling grid where the hydrodynamic conditions inhibit the deposition and favour the resuspension of particles with small diameter. The distribution of muddy deposits was patchy throughout the bay although the mud deposits near the Burbo Bight seem to be a permanent feature. The concentrations of trace elements and carbon were determined in two grain size fractions. Carbon in the fine fraction increased in sediment samples with lower proportions of fine sediments probably as a result of an increase in the available surface area since these samples apparently had higher proportions of clays. This relationship was scattered suggesting that the inputs of carbon from different sources, i. e., waste disposal, riverine inputs and autochthonous production, overshadow any clear trends between carbon and grain size in sediments. This observation is consistent with the distribution of S13C values. The concentration of organic matter in coarse sediments seemed to be determined by the amount of surrounding fine particles, particularly in samples with fine fraction concentrations higher than 5%. The concentrations of all of the trace elements, except arsenic, in the coarse fraction were correlated with the organic matter content suggesting that the organic phase is an important carrier of metals in the coarse particles. In the fine fraction, however, there was a large variability in the correlations, suggesting different geochemical behaviour between trace elements. For example a contrasting behaviour was observed between mercury and arsenic since the former seemed to be associated with land derived organic matter with no correlations with the content of iron and manganese, whereas arsenic showed a strong correlation with these two elements reflecting its preference for hydrous oxides of iron and manganese. The geochemical behaviour of each particular trace element seems to play an important role in the observed distributions of the elements in Liverpool Bay sediments. PCBs were determined in total sediments. A high correlation between PCB concentrations and the fine fraction content was observed as a result of the preferential association of these contaminants in fine particles. The distribution of normalized PCB concentrations indicated that inputs from the Mersey may be an important source of PCBs. Different patterns were observed in the PCB congener composition of the samples which reflected the different sources and degree of alteration of the "original" pattern found at the source. The changes in the composition were related to the degree of chlorination and substitution pattern since these factors control the physicochemical properties of PCB congeners. The sediments were classified based on their elemental content and on their PCB contents by means of multivariate statistical methods. The sediments were classified in similar groups from their organic and inorganic contents, which suggested that the sources of organic and inorganic contaminants in Liverpool Bay are similar.

From the abstract: Fairy tales aside this study is an analysis of Port Elizabeth harbour development during its first half century from 1820-70. Despite the fact that Port Elizabeth quickly came to dominate Cape trade very little was actually done to improve its port facilities. Superficially the impression one gains from the available material is that everything was done by government not to develop a harbour at Algoa Bay. But the real question is: was harbour development really necessary at Port Elizabeth during the period under consideration? The answer must be no. The lack of facilities certainly did not hinder the massive expansion of wool exports that took place before 1870.

Abstract:
Dialect emergence or new-dialect formation in intensive contact situations has been the subject of research for decades. Approaches to dialect emergence have led to a more solid understanding of the origins of specific phonological features. This line of research often approaches issues of new-dialect formation and phonological feature development within the confines of one linguistic subfield. However, new-dialect formation is a multifaceted phenomenon which results from a combination of dialectological, phonological and historical linguistic factors. The current thesis presents a comprehensive account of phonological feature development in new-dialect formation from a combined theoretical perspective by exploring historical and contemporary processes in the emergence of phonologically-conditioned variation in the price and mouth lexical sets in Liverpool English. This feature has been widely researched in other varieties of English and has previously been attributed to new-dialect formation. However, little is known about the patterns of price and mouth in Liverpool English. The current thesis relies on multiple methods of data collection (e.g. a combination of fieldwork and corpus data), various quantitative methods, and detailed acoustic analyses (e.g. formants and Euclidean distance in a two-dimensional formant space) to investigate the precise details and the processes involved in the emergence and development of price and mouth patterns in Liverpool English. Liverpool English is thought to have emerged during the 19th century as a result of extensive and prolonged immigration from the surrounding areas of Lancashire and Cheshire, and from Ireland, Wales, and Scotland. However, the specific timing, extent of immigration, and proportion of immigrant populations have not been investigated in detail. The current thesis provides the first in-depth analysis of historical census records in order to extend our knowledge of the populations in Liverpool at the time of new-dialect formation. The insights obtained from this analysis provide a more nuanced picture of the development of Liverpool English. They are essential for determining what dialects potentially contributed to dialect formation and the repertoire of price and mouth variants present at the time that these processes were developing. The analysis of historical census records is further augmented by using a combination of quantitative methods and historical corpora in order to gain a fuller understanding of the processes involved in the formation of these dialect features. The contemporary investigation of price and mouth in Liverpool English shows that these patterns are separate, but related, and that their phonological conditioning environments resemble those reported for cases of price and mouth variation in other varieties of English. I present a detailed overview of the phonetics and phonology of price and mouth variation in Liverpool English, looking at a wide range of conditioning environments. This investigation also reviews a range of different quantitative measurements useful for research on variation involving diphthongs. The origins of price and mouth phonological patterns in Liverpool English indicate that an approach combining different theoretical perspectives is required to adequately explain the development of these patterns. The current thesis suggests that price and mouth phonologically conditioned variation in Liverpool English initially resulted from variants of different dialects within the dialect contact situation. However, some features of the contemporary patterns developed following new-dialect formation as a by-product of phonetic and phonological properties of diphthong production in certain following environments. By approaching the development of these phonological features in Liverpool English from a combination of theoretical perspectives, the current thesis expands our understanding of emergent phonological features in new-dialect formation.

Haeney, Jane Gwyneth. "Culture, food, memory and health : an intergenerational study in Liverpool." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2010. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/5979/.

Full text
Abstract:
This intergenerational study within Liverpool communities employed embodied memory as an analytical tool to explore the changing nature of food practices and the consequent implications for diet and health. The methodology had a qualitative focus using a phenomenological approach that employed the ethnographic methods of participant/nonparticipant observation, natural conversations, document analysis and in-depth interviews with eight families that comprised three and four generations of mixed gender and socioeconomic backgrounds spanning almost one hundred years. Memory is a multi-faceted phenomenon through which I have explored a range of concepts in relation to food and familial practices; history, inter-generational transmission, identity, tradition, community and health. The notion of embodied memory involving the senses and emotions, revealed the cultural and social meanings my participants afforded to traditional, ritual and everyday foods and food practices and the extent to which these organised and embodied their relationship with the past bound up in life experiences that included transitions, turning points and significant events and relationships. Within particular temporal, social, economic and historical contexts such memories moulded food and eating practices that in turn, intersected with the major influences on food choice including available resources, corporate marketing, personal attributes and knowledge, family values and health concerns. The study produced evidence that health and illness are not independent variables that can be tested and measured, but rather are subjective experiences embodied in everyday life attention to which can help us develop a better understanding of why the relationship between food and health has become problematic. Food stories across time revealed that people draw on, and respond to, different knowledges that may, or may not, lead them to improvise or make adjustments to their food practices. A common sense stock of knowledge bound up in the notion of tradition once embedded in the community and family has, to a large extent, been superseded by 'expert' knowledge derived from surveys that provide evidence base for government advice on healthy eating from which, despite inconsistencies, the individual is expected to make rational, informed choices. My study challenges this ethos of individualism wrapped up in the aphorism 'you are what you eat', arguing that we need to focus our attention on the social and cultural ways in which food 'gets done', food as it is valued and practiced, that in turn may lead to more effective health promotion strategies.

Anderton, Dane. "Firm ecologies : life science and video game industries in Liverpool." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2014. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/2009228/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research examines the life science and video games industries in Liverpool. Previous research on agglomerations and cities tends to focus on epicentres or high concentration places such as Silicon Valley or global cities such as London and Tokyo, neglecting the northern post-industrial cities such as Liverpool, Leeds or Newcastle. Equally, many studies tend to focus in on one particular industry, whereas this research examines two key knowledge economy sectors in one place. Petilis (2012) argues that the cluster literature has become overemphasised and lacks analytical ability in the investigation of smaller firms and highly diverse concentrations of activity. An alternative ecological perspective is used in this thesis, which is considered more reflexive and flexible to the composition of the agglomerations seen outside the epicentres of the global economy. Using the heterarchical approach, as outlined by Grabher (2001), this research investigates the emergence and organisation of Liverpool’s life science and video game industries. It reveals the changing composition of the industries in Liverpool and how firms are connected into wider production networks beyond Liverpool. Finally, the research analyses how the two industries are situated in the anatomy of the city. The key findings are generated from a mixed methodology utilizing qualitative semi-structure interviews with owner-managers, industry informants and supporting institutions. Secondary quantitative data has been used gathered from annual reports, company websites, industry association and office for national statistics. Firstly, it is argued that the two industries emerged in Liverpool under different conditions and are on different trajectories, conditioned by local events and global mechanisms in the wider industry. Such trajectories have aided the rise or the fall of various structures and institutions within the city of Liverpool. This has resulted in a life science industry that resembles an institutionally thick anatomy and a video games industry that resembles an institutionally thin anatomy. Secondly, key findings regarding the organisation and connections beyond Liverpool highlight the fact that both industries show a lack of internal connectivity within the ecology and depend significantly on their external connections for inputs in production. For the life sciences this is exacerbated with the high level of product diversity between firms decreasing the likelihood of potential internal connectivity in production or joint resource utilization between firms. Thus firms rely on their external connections for finance and resources in order to further the production of their products through licensing and merger and acquisition agreements. Thirdly, the video games industry has gained greater autonomy over production analogues to that of the industry norm. For the life sciences, the rigidity in the generic business model is reinforced by the high levels of regulation and intellectual property protections and reduces the ability of some smaller firms to complete a product. Overall, we see two key knowledge economy sectors emerging with changing degrees of functionality as a result of global changes in the industry and the development of institutional infrastructures around these two sectors.

Abstract:
Across higher education (HE) institutions in the United Kingdom (UK), the lower grades achieved by a large proportion of students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds represents one of the main entry barriers to these students. However, though students’ trajectories into university are heavily dependent on their school qualifications, these alone are limited as predictors of academic potential. The current thesis explores how these inequalities play out at the University of Liverpool (UoL), looking also at the period prior to admission as educational inequalities reflect the long-term negative effects of childhood disadvantage. Aim: To investigate socio-economic inequalities in relation to participation and attainment at the UoL. Methods: A traditional sequential mixed methods design is followed, where quantitative studies 1 and 2 were carried out prior to qualitative study 3. These studies are combined using a pragmatic approach. Two retrospective cohort studies investigate associations between the educational and socio-demographic background characteristics of students on Introduction: Socio-economic inequalities in participation and attainment are ubiquitous three year-programmes (study 1) and the medical programme (study 2) with participation and attainment at the UoL. Underpinned by phenomenology, qualitative study 3 investigates the challenges faced by thirteen socio-economically disadvantaged students throughout their educational trajectories from primary school to the UoL. Results: Studies 1 and 2 depict the on-going socio-economic differences in participation at the UoL. Regarding attainment, in both studies, entry grades were positively associated with final attainment. Most entry-level differences narrowed or disappeared at university in both studies though the variables sex, ethnicity, and school type predicted significant differences in final attainment. As such, privately educated students performed less well than comprehensive school students at university in both studies. In Study 3, two main themes were derived from the data: ‘identity’ and ‘engagement’. These themes emerged across narratives in the types of disruption, barriers and instability that were discussed by individuals and in the ways that they attempted to cope and/or adapt to disadvantage. Conclusions: The findings of the quantitative studies suggest that educational attainment at school is a good, albeit imperfect, predictor of academic attainment at university. These findings support the use of contextual background information, alongside school grades in university admissions processes as a means of refining the selection of students. In turn, individuals' narratives expose a more complex picture of what it means to be disadvantaged, depicting the factors that may affect students' trajectories to HE prior to the point of admissions. Hence, combining quantitative and qualitative studies provides a more nuanced evaluation of 'disadvantage' highlighting various mechanisms that may drive differences in the educational outcomes of socio-economically disadvantaged students. Findings advocate for further evidence using mixed methods to help address these inequalities and widen participation at universities fairly.

Abstract:
The central concern of this study is the nature, origin and scale of the physical conflict between Protestants and Catholics in Liverpool throughout the period 1819 to 1914. This topic is examined within the framework of the endemic anti-Catholicism of Victorian England and the reactions to the dismantling of the privileges of the established Church. In addition, the scale of Irish immigration into Liverpool during the nineteenth century and its consequences for local government and the maintenance of public order are discussed and related to the phenomenon of sectarian violence. From this framework, certain themes are selected for detailed study and related to the core issue of physical sectarian conflict. Using both official sources and newspaper material, an account is given of the appearance and growth of the English Orange Order, its mexrüership, objectives and its role in formenting sectarian conflict. In particular, the relationship between Liverpool Conservatism and Orangeism before 1850 is examined in detail. The strength of the middle class adherence to Church and Constitution politics is an important theme within this study and the mechanism whereby such concerns were transferred to working class Protestants by evangelical Anglican clergy is examined in the context of Liverpool. Particular attention is also paid to the tensions within the Chruch of England arising from the activities of ritualist clergy and the consequences of this controversy in working-class Liverpool. The roles played by two individuals, Hugh McNeile and George Wise, in formenting sectarian violence are examined closely. Lastly, and most important from the viewpoint of the study's objective, the nature of the physical conflict, its extent and its enduring quality, together with its divisive effects on Liverpool's working class community is demonstrated.

Abstract:
Economic and demographic decline are significant factors in the generation of brownfield land. Small brownfield sites can create negative images of neighbourhoods, attracting anti-social behaviour and having detrimental effects on communities. This deters investment, creating a downward spiral of neglect and market failure. Despite the policy emphasis placed on reuse and removing the blight associated with brownfield sites, there is a paucity of studies relating to the issue of, a) small sites and b) specifically derelict sites. This leads to a lack of reliable data and problems for the evidence base which informs the development of policy. This study explores the effects of unenumerated small scale land dereliction on cities and communities in social and economic terms. The study takes a mixed methods approach including a three-tier case study focusing on the development of the derelict land issue in Liverpool. Liverpool is considered to be the most deprived local authority in England and has experienced long term demographic decline and depression and as such has a high proportion of derelict and vacant land. Despite being the focus of a plethora of regeneration initiatives, Liverpool still has a large number of derelict sites, the majority of which are smaller than 0.25 hectares.

Abstract:
In liverpool, the inner city means social, economic, school and family failures. Nothing seems able to interrupt the vicious circle of marginalisation in which children are trapped very early: nothing except adult education. The latter is a great instrument against the current exclusion of parents, and the future one of children. Because it deals with individuals, it brings about solutions to persons, and free them from a life of frustration and assistance. Once acknowledged, adult education should also play a very important part in the urban regeneration of inner city areas, supplying thereby a collective answer. It is time that political decision-makers should stop neglecting it and learn what it can provide. Then it will be able to take part in more comprehensive, more human urban policies whose actions will last longer. In this double perspective, adult education offers british disadvantaged citizens a second chance to live which will help them to be part of the european society of the future
