Tan, Hai Chen. "A methodology for the 'live' capture and reuse of project knowledge in construction." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2006. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7902.

Full text
Abstract:
The importance of capturing and sharing useful knowledge from construction projects has been recognised by the construction industry. However, issues such as the loss of important insights due to the time lapse in capturing the knowledge, the need for sharing the knowledge captured as soon as possible in order to maximise the benefits brought about by reusing the knowledge, and the need to share the knowledge before the opportunities for reusing the knowledge diminish have not been adequately addressed. To address this, it is crucial for knowledge to be captured as soon as possible once it is created or identified (i.e. 'live') in a collaborative environment, and presented in a format that will facilitate its reuse during and after the project. This research was aimed at developing a methodology that facilitates the `live' capture and reuse of project knowledge in construction. An extensive literature review was first conducted on the concept of knowledge management and the current practices for managing project knowledge. Subsequently, case studies involving six companies were carried out to investigate the shortcomings of current practice and the end-user requirements for the capture and reuse of project knowledge. These requirements informed the development of the methodology for `live' capture and reuse of project knowledge. The Web IS Development Methodology (Avison and Fitzgerald, 2003) employing ASP. NET 2.0 was adopted to encapsulate the methodology into a Web-based prototype application. The evaluation of the prototype revealed that the methodology can enable project knowledge to be captured and shared `live' across different organisations without significant additional workload and costs. It is concluded that the `live' capture and reuse of project knowledge in construction is important in preventing knowledge loss and helping to harness the project knowledge captured. A combination of both KM technologies and techniques is essential for the effective management of tacit and explicit knowledge. The prototype application developed can facilitate the `live' capture and reuse of project knowledge as shown by the results of the evaluation. There is scope for enhancing this study by exploring the integration of the prototype application with other information systems, and the use of software agents to automatically locate useful knowledge from the Internet and project extranets. The methodology developed will help construction organisation to leverage their knowledge in a timely way to meet the challenge of today's fast evolving world.

Full text
Abstract:
Background and rationale: This thesis explores the impact of attendance and participation at an ex-service user led project in Leeds for alcohol dependency. This thesis is important for two reasons. First, in the last few years, UK drug and alcohol policy has implemented a strategy that aims to facilitate full recovery from drug and alcohol dependency. Further research is needed to explore and understand the issues surrounding addiction recovery. Second, a scoping review of the literature found a significant lack of UK based studies exploring the impact of attendance and involvement at self-help groups for addiction recovery. Methodology and Methods: A qualitative, ethnographic methodology was used to gain a holistic understanding of the Learning to Live Again project (hereafter LTLA). A convenience sample of service users, mentors and professional staff who attended or were involved with the project was recruited. Participant observation was conducted at the project in order to gain greater familiarity with the project, followed by semi-structured interviews with those involved with the project. Data were analysed through a thematic framework approach. The data were interpreted and explained based on the theoretical assumptions of symbolic interactionism. Findings: The main finding was that the LTLA project provides service users with a recovery project that facilitates recovery on both an individual and collective level. The culture of abstinence and the peer support service users had access to, appeared to facilitate recovery by providing service users with a recovery project that is built on firsthand experience of addiction recovery. However, the data also demonstrated that some service users remain connected to their addiction through their ‘over-involvement’ with the LTLA project. Conclusions: This thesis contributes to the understanding of how and why attendance at an ex-service user led project for alcohol dependency impacts on recovery, and contributes to the UK evidence base on research in this area. The themes identified in this thesis lay the foundation for future research and further contributes to the understanding of recovery in UK drug and alcohol policy.

Wilson, Welma. "Document management system in owner companies during project execution / W. Wilson." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4146.

Full text
Abstract:
Owner companies should consider all elements of Document Management during a project’s life cycle, identify shortcomings and address them successfully to ensure successful completion of projects and ultimately to also ensure legal compliance as stipulated by contractual agreements. Proper governance during the execution of projects involves, amongst others, the establishment of structures and processes, with appropriate checks and balances built into these structures and processes, to enable all stakeholders to be in a position to have access to relevant documentation. Executing projects makes a huge demand on the flow and management of project related documentation through the different phases of these projects. The research, as documented in this dissertation, investigates and evaluates whether Sasol Technology, as the project execution agent for the Sasol Business Units, has efficient governing Document Management processes and procedures in place to support the successful execution of capital projects. Sasol Technology uses a stage gate model, associated with project life cycles, as a systematic approach for the execution of capital projects. Document Management is a new business function that was established in 2008. Not all the functions involved in the life cycle of project execution are fully aligned with the central function managing documentation. There is thus a need for a fully integrated Document Management System, involving all the functions of Sasol which are involved during the different phases of project execution. The literature study analyses existing world best document management and records management practices and procedures and points out that meticulous and strict document and records management practices form the backbone of organisational authentic evidence compliance. The research design method that was chosen to authenticate the research question is an Exploratory Qualitative Approach, combined with a Descriptive Approach. Results are obtained from a combination of three methods. Published and available existing data of how documents are managed in Sasol was gathered and secondary findings are established. Focused and structured interviews were then conducted with experienced team members from the different functions involved in project execution and lastly, e-mail administrated questionnaires were developed and distributed to relevant project team members within Sasol Technology to assess the current system and to determine additional requirements for an enhanced Document Management System, specifically applicable to owner companies in the project execution environment. Whereas the scrutiny of the secondary sources provides a background and the progress iii made with regard to setting requirements for a standardised Document Management System for the execution of projects in the Sasol Technology and some of the other Sasol Business Units, the primary data findings indicate how the project team members perceive the existing Sasol Technology Document Management System to be. Key findings include, that documentation life cycle management is not fully developed and needs to be addressed in the Sasol Technology project execution environment. Furthermore, integration of the documentation management of the various departments, functions and structures in Sasol will enable better and improved management of project documentation. The specific output of this dissertation is the recommendation of an improved Document Management System to allow the different functions within Sasol Technology and some other Sasol Business Units to have access to an integrated system, included in it all relevant documentation requirements during the life cycle of projects. An added deliverable is a framework of requirements to be included in a document management philosophy, not only for Sasol, but also for other owner companies during project execution.

Abstract:
The motivation for this thesis is based on the fact that telecommunications projects have increased their complexity; nowadays, customers claim for the implementation of large solutions including multiple vendors, software and hardware with highly customizable features and short deadlines that continuously challenge project managers and telecommunications practitioners to create value for their customers. This thesis focuses on the description of current practices in the telecommunications industry and how these practices can be improved in order to achieve a time reduction in a project?s lifecycle. This research is based on a case study of a company from the telecommunications sector in Colombia. The company is called level (3) and they deliver and operate services using frameworks widely used in this sector. I use a qualitative approach based on the collection of data from semi-structured interviews. For the data analysis, I use the triangulation technique to find relationships between theory, standard practices and practices in real life. The theoretical conclusions reveal the relationship between ITIL and PMBOK, ITIL recognizes that the service transition stage should be executed under project management. PMBOK links projects with their product lifecycle by explaining that a phase in a product?s life cycle can be carried out as one project or as multiple projects.Practical conclusions reveal that the three most important measures that the company must implement to shorten the project life cycle are: first, improving the workflow; second, managing project communication and service assets; and third, configuration management.

Orozco, Mojica Diego. "Risk profile modeling for large scale projects : case study of a transmission line project." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/44280.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the next several years in North America, the power grid needs to be revitalized and extended to deal with aging infrastructure, capacity constraints, and the pursuit of renewable energy sources. In Canada, and particularly the province of BC, very significant complexity and risk is involved in the approval, design and construction of such projects given highly variable terrain and weather conditions, the multiplicity of the environmental, First Nations, and third part stakeholder issues involved, and challenging regulatory and procurement processes. Described in this research is a holistic approach to the identification of risk as a function of project context, the representation of which is made difficult in the context of transmission line projects because of their large spatial scope and the vast volume of data of different types to be distilled and analyzed. Central to the approach is the representation of a project within an integrated environment in the form of multiple views of a project – product, process, participant, environment and risk. Treatment of the first four views aids the identification of risk drivers for a risk event. Knowledge of risk drivers assists with expressing likelihood of occurrence of a risk event and the magnitude of impacts should it occur, and selecting the most appropriate risk response. Application of the approach to a 255 km 500 KV design-build transmission line project is featured and challenges involved in developing its risk profile highlighted. How data visualization can assist development of a project’s risk profile and facilitating insights into it is also demonstrated. The use of the holistic approach described for the development of a project’s risk register and mining its contents using data visualization to generate useful insights has proven to be of significant value to project personnel.

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 125-143).
For over a decade, ERP systems have been the target of significant amounts of investment in organisations. Some have reaped the benefits anticipated while others struggle to achieve the required level of success. In fact, based on available statistics, numerous organisations have faced problems in keeping their allocated budget and time schedules on track often facing the threat of failure, escalation or significant redirection in their projects. As a result, organisations are seen to spend what can be termed as additional unplanned effort (AUE) in order to try and achieve a certain level of success given budget and time constraints. Using the concept called AUE, derived from topics such as ERP project success and failure, the ERP life-cycle framework and critical success factors (CSFs) relevant to the life-cycle phases, this study attempted to investigate the factors that influence AUE in the phases ofthe ERP life-cycle which in this study consist of the pre-implementation and implementation phases specifically. A sub-objective was also to investigate the possible influence that the presence of factors, responsible for escalation of commitment (EoC) in IT projects, have on AUE in ERP projects. Based on a qualitative mUltiple case-study of 5 ERP projects at different organisations, results showed that there are several factors that influence AUE in satisfying CSFs in each phase of the life-cycle. Particularly, in the pre-implementation phase, factors such as the justification for ERP adoption, the formalisation of an ERP vision, the finalisation of an ERP package choice, the stability of organisational structure, the organisation and flow of the acquisition process, the nature of market conditions and the type of internal and external partnership were found important in influencing AUE in that phase. In the implementation phase factors such as the formalisation of an implementation strategy, the management of organisational momentum and resistance to change, the maintenance of external partnership relationships, conditions external to the organisation, the nature of the organisation and the management of project factors were found important.

Abstract:

This group of paintings was informed by an investigation of the complex linear matrix of wires within telecommunications networks and data centers. As most of these processes are automated, I took interest in how they continue operating without our knowledge or attention, much like the functions of our own human bodies. I began to regard this wiring as the nervous system of our technologically driven modes of communication. With this as a metaphor, I began to question how the greater system of daily operations played into contemporary life, both physically and psychologically.

Often, it is not until we encounter a glitch or malfunction in these processes, that we even become aware of the system that generated them. I decided to take these faults in the wiring as visual metaphors and departure points to begin the intuitive process of painting. While my work has been instigated by a metaphorical investigation into technology, its core reflects the handmade; intuitive, and off-line. These paintings have evolved from an abstract relationship with technological transmission to an embodied metaphor for technology within human experience.

Abstract:
The meaning of conducting projects has changed over time. A long time ago it could be a matter of building pyramids, today a project may consist of implementing a new IT-system. In recent decades, the project work form has become the most common approach for execution of organizational activities, both in the industry sector and public administration. Approximately 90 % of all projects conducted today are being run under circumstances where several projects are carried out in parallel, which has given rise to so-called multi-project environments. Previous research highlights a number of negative consequences that arise in multi-project environments, where the most prominent characteristics are time constraints including tight deadlines, fragmentation as a single project manager is in charge of several projects simultaneously, and resource conflicts as resources within the same organization are shared between several project managers and line units.   The purpose of our study is to apply Amabile and Kramer's (2011) concept of inner work life, to explore how project managers are affected from working in a multi-project environment. Our research question is therefore: what are the impacts on project managers inner work life from working in a multi-project environment? Amabile and Kramer's (2011) concept contains a total of twelve different categories that affect an individual's inner work life. To answer the question, we used a qualitative approach. Four project managers working in multi-project environments in the private sector were interviewed. In order to analyze their responses we used a thematic analysis approach. The results of the study indicates that project managers are affected both negatively and positively from working in multi-project environments, where negative impact is most prevalent from an overall perspective.

Abstract:
Squatter settlements still represent the worst of urban poverty and inequality in Turkey. Yet the world has the resources, know-how and power to reach the best experiences. Urban transformation has become a topic of growing interest in many cities in the world. It has also become popular in Turkish cities and the most common urban transformation projects in Turkey are implemented in squatter settlements. However, while the scope of urban transformation interventions generally aims to improve the quality of urban life, increase the livability of cities in various aspects and provide cities with the ability to trace other cities in both national scale and the globalized world, it is still a question mark whether urban transformation projects are successful enough in improving every aspects of urban life and fulfill the promise of development for their inhabitants particularly by improving the lives of the poor and promoting equity. In this respect, this research tries to identify the success level of urban transformation projects implemented in squatter settlements. Since many urban transformation projects implemented extensively in squatter settlements in Turkey, generally with the aim of increasing the density of buildings and gaining rent over these areas, the concept of urban transformation has an indisputable importance to be researched. The key purpose of this thesis is to reveal the components of quality of urban and community life in terms of physical, environmental, social, and economic dimensions and provide both objective (quantitative) and subjective (qualitative) approaches over these components to assess the success level of Sentepe Urban Transformation Project and increase the success level of urban transformation projects in squatter settlements. This research will reveal up the degree to which Sentepe Urban Transformation Project will respond to the requirements of the criteria of urban quality of life. Further, this research aims to provide inputs for the next urban transformation interventions to guarantee the satisfaction of urban life and well-beings of local community in terms of various issues related to urban life. The key proposition of this research is &

Abstract:
The main goal of this dissertation thesis is to design and verify a new concept of process management principles, procedures and tools application, utilizable in the software development project management field. Emphasis is placed on creating a general (i.e. generally usable) concept, derived from solid theoretical background and suitable for further expansion and modifications. The theoretical part of the thesis has two main chapters. In the "Process management" chapter, the individual derived principles (Effectiveness, Added value, Coherence, Portability, Adequate standardization, Measurability, Clarity, Integration, Accountability, Continuous improvement) and procedures (Initiation, Identification, Definition, Validation, Implementation, Revision) are described and interconnected into an integrated concept, usable for the introduction and development of process management in the organization, supported by appropriate ICT tools (mainly from four selected areas -- Modeling and Simulation, Performance measurement, Change management, Administration). In the "Project Management" chapter, the project management area is embedded in the broader context of a process-driven organization in line with modern models of strategic ICT governance and ICT services management. The main dimensions of project management as well as the process approach to project management, which helps to bridge the gap between unique/temporary projects and repeatable/stable processes, are described. Basis for the normative project processes design in the following part of the thesis is set by the evaluation of selected models of the project life cycle and project management methodologies. The practical part of this thesis is basically a verification of the concept, described in the theoretical chapters. Firstly, an original project management methodology, suitable for deriving process model of the subject area, is presented. On this basis -- and by using the previously described principles, procedures and process management tools -- the major artifacts of a reference project processes model are elaborated (such as Conceptual model of the subject area, List of events and natural processes, Process pyramid, Process model, Organization model, Indicators pyramid or RACI matrix of roles and processes/indicators /SLAs; setup of selected process model is also verified experimentally by simulations). Critical evaluation of the presented model is an important input for the final assessment of the thesis goals' achievement and proposal of further research fields.

Claase, Juan. "Achieving alignment of the objectives of the role players in a typical construction industry / Juan Claase." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4466.

Full text
Abstract:
The nature of the construction industry and the complexities accompanying the sector of the economy globally, necessitates that role players review their positions continuously in an effort to stay abreast of the most modern best practice value chain developments, not only in terms of relationships formed within the upstream supply chain (client supply chain), but also within the downstream supply chain (main contractor/supplier supply chain). Not only is it a natural phenomenon for role players to shift their focus from best practise value chain development to a more relaxed state during a boom in the global economy, but also to shift their focus back to best practices during a slump in the global economy, in order to protect their margins and competitive position established during economic prosperity. To this extent, this dissertation offers an overview of the core aspects that cause misalignment between the objectives of the role players in the construction industry as well as the critical need for role players to proactively shift their paradigm in an effort to mitigate any potential effects the economy might have on role player relationships as well as on the productivity of the industry and the supply chain. Chapter 1 provides the overview, the problem statement and the primary and secondary objectives of the study, and in particular, achieving alignment of the objectives of the role players in a typical construction project. This is followed by a detailed literature study in chapter 2 that provides information regarding role player relationships and the alignment of objectives in the construction industry. This is supported by an empirical study in chapter 3 that links the practical state of affairs with the literature study. The dissertation then concludes by introducing recommendations and a generic project strategic model that can be implemented in an effort to achieve alignment of the objectives of the role players in a typical construction project.

Abstract:

Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) projects have long been considered as a strategy for organizational growth and gain of market share. Top management teams of companies take M&As into consideration since it is faster and less costly compare to internal growth and development programs. M&A project has variety of benefits such as growth in market share, increase in shareholder wealth, access to new markets, technological advantages and so on and so forth. Another benefit of such projects is the expected synergies which happen in financial, production, value chain and technological aspects of the existing company. However, according to many authors there is a high rate of failure in M&A industry. One of the main reasons of failure identified as the poor performance of post-M&A integration projects. Based on literature, a project perspective to these highly complex projects will reduce the risk of failure and will result in successful performance of new companies. However, there is a research gap in this filed.

After identifying the research gap and formulating the problem statement, research was designed in order to study the applicability of a project management (PM) approach toward M&A and their integration projects. Through performing a case study on a Swedish company who has undergone a number of M&A projects, interviews were conducted with top management team involved in such projects in order to collect empirical data. Based on qualitative data analysis methods, the primary data was integrated into pattern and themes and then analyzed.

Based on the findings of the research, it was identified that in acquisition projects of small and medium size companies the strategic fit is more significant than organizational fit since the new company will dissolve completely and the rest of the integration is in control of the company. Furthermore, after identifying M&A projects as temporary organizations, three aspects: project organization, human resource and governance were verified based on literature. In the context of this study, human resource and governance is considered key elements in terms of acquisition projects. Finally, a framework was proposed in order to implement project management approach by fulfilling three dimension of PM which are project organization, project life-cycle and project governance.

Abstract:
This work deals with the data migration during the process of mergers and acquisitions. The first, theoretical part, defines the general terms concerning mergers and acquisitions, further mentions motives that may lead to it, and the basic stages of the implementation process of mergers and acquisitions. This section also presents brief information on selected methodologies of project management, of which principles are used in the next part, dealing with data migration projects. The aim of this work is to develop a methodology for project management of data migration in mergers and acquisitions process, which may serve as a guide for merging companies and data migration teams. In the methodology there are specified activities and defined procedures to be followed in the various stages of the project life cycle. To each activity the way and necessary prerequisites for carrying out are specified. The methodology also describes common problems with which the data migration project in carrying out the action may be faced and which could threaten the success of the project or its part. For each potential problem a possible way to eliminate it is added, or solutions.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Democratic systems are dependent on voluntary compliance of citizens to the commands of governments. A decline of public confidence in the public sector is an indicator of fundamental problems in the nature of a democratic system. Constitutional objectives and supporting legislation in South Africa advocates the practice of public participation through the Community Based Public Works Programme and integrated development planning at local council level. The importance of public participation as a vehicle to enhance the social capital of nations cannot be overstated. There are various opinions however of what model of public participation is best suited to the life cycle approach of project management. The literature supports the fact that social capital formation curtails the incidence of crime, poverty and other adverse social evils. A misaligned approach to the application of public participation holds the danger that the socio-economic objectives of government cannot be attained. In this regard, project managers have a responsibility towards government to apply public participation in their projects in such a way that formation of social capital is achieved. In tum, governments should endeavour to apply an appropriate amount of resources to these initiatives to get the critical mass necessary to turn the economy around.

The project developed a web-based application that provides a user-friendly interface to assist practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine in determining the correct diagnosis. Traditional Chinese Medicine On-line Diagnosis System (TCMODS) allows a diagnostician to enter a patient's symptoms using a series of questionnaires to determine health status, which will then be stored in the database as part of the patient's medical records. The database will also differentiate among the patterns of syndromes known in traditional Chinese medicine and search and match these with the patient's data to the known uses of Chinese herbs. TCMODS will then generate that patient's medical record, including the symptoms of the ailment, the syndrome, and a prescription. User identification and access privileges were differentiated in order to maintain the integrity of the patient medical data and the information needed to make the diagnoses. The project was designed to function across platforms and was written using HTML, JSP, and MySQL.

This masters thesis deals with the influence of urban mobility on the quality of life in the city. It presents the theoretical assumptions for the implementation of such a transport policy which, in turn is said to lead toward a better quality of life. The aspect of sustainability is also taken into account during this thesis. This study sets out to analyze the urban mobility in all of its forms and provide examples of foreign cities whose transport systems are positively evaluated. A practical session was carried out, which focused on the case of Pilsen, to find the relationship between the urban mobility system and the impact on quality of life through their implemented and planned projects.
