Abstract:

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to describe the work process and the results of our work with developing a web based auction system for students at Linköpings University. The present options open for students to sell objects within the University is limited to a billboard that doesn’t support bidding. Because of that a system was developed to offer an environment where they could present there objects and let demand set the final price level. A new function in this process is the option of alternate ways to end an auction with the intention of eliminating some of the problems that exists within the currently available web based auction systems with last second biding.

ENG, JOE. "LIU CH'I AND HIS "KUEI-CH'IEN-CHIH" (CHINA)." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/184158.

Full text
Abstract:
Liu Ch'i, a belletrist of the Chin dynasty (1115-1234), recorded an eyewitness account of the fall of the Chin in his memoir, the Kuei-ch'ien-chih (The Record of One Returned to Obscurity). He was motivated by an inner logic which thematically argues that: The disintegration of effective Chin administration was a direct result of the deterioration of Chin literary standards, symptomatic of a more basic degeneration of the traditional Confucian high culture. The collapse of the Chin climaxed approximately three hundred years of rise and fall (c. 900-1234). As Jurchen tribal organization became inadequate, they imitated the Ch'i-tan model of a dualistic tribal-agrarian society and tended to adopt Chinese institutions. Dynamic decline seemed in direct proportion to the decline in Jurchen institutions. However, Liu Ch'i observed this decline and its climax in the fall of the Chin capital, K'aifeng, and thought that the Chin failed for not fully adopting Chinese ones. His memoir, Kuei-ch'ien-chih, was transmitted from its writing in 1235 to the present edition, the Chung-hua shu-chu Yuan-Ming shi-k'o pi-cho ts'ung-k'an, collated by Ts'ui Wen-yin (second edition 1983). Liu Ch'i illustrates his themes with Chin pesonalities portraying the union of ability-aspiration-achievement to mean the highest combination of traditional Confucian values. He quickly attentuates this theme in the succeeding chuan to show possible variations of failure in a descending taxonomy. In his seventh chuan, Liu Ch'i argues that since the Chin dynasty limited their literary focus of the civil service examinations solely upon the lyric, the prose-poem, and the commentary on the classics, the source of potential leadership, the chin-shih, became intellectually effete leasing to a degeneration in political dynamics. Liu Ch'i's personal rationalization was one of confident expectation despite an involvement in drafting a testimonial to Ts'ui Li, who had betrayed K'aifeng to the Mongols. He felt that time and circumstance were cyclical in nature and that he had fulfilled his destiny and his duty. Liu Ch'i's memoir warrants a closer examination in its entirety to appreciate its inner, thematic logic and a translation of the preface and first three chapters is presented as a preliminary to the full translation.

Art conveys my emotions, records my life, and associates me closely with this land. To me, without art, I have no way to unbosom my depression. In Surangama Sutra, “Ru Liu Wang Suo” was mentioned. “Ru Liu” means entry and exit, and “Wang Suo” means an area where no one could station. Then enlightenment occurred to Bodhisattva in listening to sea tide. Predicament is unavoidable to people. Personally, in face of predicament, I need to learn how to discharge the burden of predicament from my inner self. It is where the significance of art lies. It allows the unsettled state of mind in sound of tide to vanish in ebb. It is the state of existence that I strive for; thus, “Ru Liu Wang Suo” is the thesis for my art statement. The art statement is a record of dialogue between Yi-shao Gong, a friend of mine, and I. Yi-shao Gong raised a number of questions on my art creation; the subject matter covers dialectical thinking on art, creation, and life. It was indeed a one-time summary over my ten years art experience at this stage. Based on the types of questions and conversation content, the art statement was divided into 9 themes, which are “The Principal and Autonomy of Art”, “Art Expression”, “Dialectic on Art-Life, and Fear in Art”, “The Course and Manipulation of Painting”, “Art-Work, the Outlet or Halt of Reality”, “Nihility — ‘Ru Liu Wang Suo’”, “The Process and Narration of Art Creation”, and “Reality in Art Creation — Record of Self Image, not to Bear Weight, Flatten the Thickness”. The statement is a summary of my artistic perception and expectation toward art.

This thesis consists of two parts: the first part is the graduate recital, which includes the program and program notes. The second part is the lecture recital, a research paper for discussing “The craft of Scriabin's and Debussy's Piano Music-The Analytical Study of their Preludes”. There are five chapters in the lecture recital. The first chapter is preface and the second chapter mainly discusses the historical developments of preludes. The third chapter selects two sets of Scriabin's Piano Preludes, and it focuses on “the composer’s brief biography” and “the analysis of Scriabin's Op.17 and Op.74”. Four of Debussy's preludes are chosen for the fourth chapter, and it also mentions four points about the composer's brief biography, the relationship between Impressionism and Symbolism, the composition background and the analysis of these four preludes. The fifth chapter is the conclusion. As the starter for the lecture recital, the Preludes discuss the changes in the turbulent Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries. Scriabin and Debussy lived in the same period and their thoughts pretty similar, but they expressed themselves in their music form and craft were quite different. Through this analytical study, we can know the differences and similarities of these two composers.

This dissertation, with the title of "An Exploration of Liu Zi", discusses the author of Liu Zi, as well as its versions and literary critiques from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The discussion of the author is divided into two parts: one is supplemented by Mr. Chen Zhiping's latest paper; the other part is comparing and contrasting Liu Zi and The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons, based on the notion that how the world is perceived via human senses and the application of new literature and methods, to return the copyright of Liu Zi to Liu Xie. It also collects and categorizes the literary texts of the current versions as the bases of the literature review, and organizes the research context of the versions of Liu Zi. As for the critiques, they are divided into the literary critiques from the Ming Dynasty and the version collation from the Qing Dynasty by exploring the four scholars—Sun Kuang and Jiang Yihua of the Ming Dynasty along with Xian Bogong and Zhang Shaoren of the Qing Dynasty. The Late Ming Dynasty scholars Sun Kuang and Jiang Yihua were considered conservative in the literary world. They did not completely agree with the contemporary pursuit of new changes, but hoped to find a way to compromise in between. Thus, Liu Zi, was interpreted by them respectively as a paradigm to fuse the new and the old. Both Sun and Jiang applauded the literary value of Liu Zi in addition to its solid arguments, which could be served as new critiques to reverse the previous ones that Liu Zi lacked literary value. In addition, the critique of the version collation made by the Japanese sinologists Xian Bogong and Zhang Shaoren helps supplement the merits and flaws of the previous versions and comprehend the subtle differences in their choices of words, which facilitates the understanding of version collation method adopted by the traditional Sinology. Through the comparison of the aforementioned critiques made in Ming and Qing dynasties, it can be seen that in terms of the research of Liu Zi, scholars from different dynasties value different academic interests that correspond with their times.
