Le but de cette thèse est de mieux connaître les effets des activités anthropiques sur l'état de conservation des habitats côtiers importants (forêts de Cystoseira et trottoirs à Vermets) dans une région peu connue de la Méditerranée : la côte Libanaise. Plusieurs approches sont appliquées pour la première fois le long de la côte Levantine, tel que l'indice CARLIT (cartographie des communautés benthiques du littoral rocheux), un outil conçu pour évaluer l’Etat Ecologique (EE) dans le cadre de la Directive des Eaux (DCE 2000/60/UE). La description générale du littoral Libanais, résumant les principales caractéristiques environnementales et les activités anthropiques influençant les communautés benthiques, a souligné que la côte Libanaise a été (et est actuellement) soumis à plusieurs pressions de plusieurs origines. L'application du CARLIT, basé sur les communautés de macroalgues a fourni des idées importantes sur l’EE actuel de la côte rocheuse Libanaise en relation avec les impacts humains et a permis d’établir une cartographie détaillée de la répartition et de l'abondance des communautés côtiers, en particulier des forêts de Cystoseira et de Sargassum). L'étude de certains trottoirs à Vermets Libanais a permis d’évaluer leur état actuel en fonction des différentes pressions humaines et confirmer qu’ils sont très affectés et que peu sont encore vivants. Dans une perspective future et avec la découverte de pétrole et du gaz dans les eaux Libanaises, les écosystèmes marins Libanais seront soumis à plusieurs nouveaux menaces ; les recherches de cette thèse présentent une base de référence de l’EE de ces écosystèmes, permettant de les conserver et suivre leur évolution The aim of this study was to provide further knowledge of the effects of anthropogenic disturbance on the conservation status of important shallow habitats (vermetid reefs, Cystoseira forests) in a relatively poorly known region of the Mediterranean Sea: the Lebanese coast. Multiple approaches were applied for the first time along the Levantine Sea, such as the CARLIT (CARtography of rocky-shore LITtoral communities) index, a tool conceived to quantify the Ecological Status (ES) in the framework of the Water Directive (WFD 2000/60/EU). A general description of the Lebanese coastline, summarizing the major environmental features and anthropogenic activities influencing benthic communities, highlighted that Lebanon has been (and is at present) subject to multiple stressors. The application of the CARLIT, based on macroalgal, gives important insights on the ES of Lebanese ecosystems in relation to human impacts and provides a detailed cartography on the distribution and abundance of shallow communities, and in particular Cystoseira and Sargassum forests. The survey of some Lebanese vermetid reefs allowed the evaluation of their current status according to different human pressures and highlighted that they are highly affected by human pressures and only few of them are still alive. In a view of the upcoming oil and gas discovery offshore Lebanon, Lebanese marine ecosystems are under multiple and massive threats; the data provided in the research performed provide a baseline of the distribution and conservation status of key habitats along Lebanese coasts, in order to follow their evolution and to have a management tool in case of catastrophic oil spills

Abstract:

La zone littorale, de grande importance pour le fonctionnement écologique du lac, est souvent la première zone réceptrice de la contamination provenant du bassin versant. Cette pollution est majoritairement piégée dans les sédiments de surface. Pour autant, les conditions environnementales variables qui règnent en zone littorale sont susceptibles de favoriser la biodisponibilité des contaminants par le jeu des réactions physico-chimiques et biologiques. Cette thèse s’appuie sur l’étude de deux grands lacs péri-alpins, le Lac du Bourget et le Lac d’Annecy, pour mieux comprendre le comportement des polluants sédimentaires (ETM, HAP et PCB) en zone littorale lacustre. Nos travaux visent notamment (1) à caractériser la contamination littorale et l’influence des sources locales dans cette contamination, (2) à évaluer l’écotoxicité des sédiments littoraux et les changements de mobilité et de biodisponibilité des polluants sédimentaires sous l’influence de changements abiotiques de la zone littorale tels que ceux induits par le marnage lacustre. Nos résultats montrent que la contamination des sédiments et organismes autochtones présente une hétérogénéité spatiale significative sur le littoral des deux lacs, tant en intensité qu’en composition (i.e. profil de contamination). L’implication de sources locales (e.g. eaux pluviales drainées sur le bassin-versant) dans cette hétérogénéité spatiale a été mise en évidence. L’écotoxicité des sédiments de la zone littorale, évaluée via la réponse de biomarqueurs enzymatiques (AChE, GST), physiologiques (e.g. taux d’ingestion chez D. magna) et des traits de vie (e.g. taux de croissance, reproduction et survie) présente également une hétérogénéité spatiale significative. La biodisponibilité des ETM sédimentaires a été plus spécifiquement étudiée aux interfaces sédiment-eau-biote. Elle varie selon l’élément, le biote exposé (benthique ou pélagique) et sous l’effet du marnage. L’assèchement et remise en eau du sédiment littoral s’accompagnent d’une réduction de la fraction biodisponible des ETM. L’abaissement de la hauteur d’eau, en revanche, entraîne une accentuation de la remise en suspension de particules sédimentaires susceptibles d’exercer un risque écotoxicologique sur le biote littoral. Nos résultats soulignent la complexité de la contamination littorale et de son transfert dans les grands lacs péri-alpins et encouragent les approches écotoxicologiques dans l’évaluation de l’état écologique The littoral zone of lakes is of great ecological importance and yet receives a large array of contaminants from the watershed. This pollution is mainly trapped by the surface sediment, but its bioavailability may be allowed by physico-chemical and biological reactions in this zone of high environmental fluctuations. This work aims at improving knowledge about the behavior of sediment-borne contaminants (trace metals, PAHs and PCBs) in the lake littoral zone by using two large perialpine lakes; Lake Bourget and Lake Annecy. More precisely, our goals were to (1) characterize the littoral contamination and the influence of local sources in this contamination, (2) assess the ecotoxicity of the sediment-borne contamination and the main changes in its mobility and bioavailability under abiotic changes in the littoral zone, such as those related to water-level fluctuations in lakes. The contamination of the sediments and native organisms exhibited a significant spatial heterogeneity along the lake littoral, in both intensity and profile’s composition. The involvement of local sources of contamination (e.g. stormwater runoff) as drivers of this spatial heterogeneity has been highlighted. The ecotoxicity of littoral sediments was assessed through the responses of enzymatic biomarkers (AChE and GST), physiological traits (e.g. ingestion rates in D. magna) and life-history traits (e.g. growth, reproduction and survival rates). Our results also underscored a significant spatial heterogeneity of the littoral sediment ecotoxicity. A greater focus on the bioavailability of trace metals at the sediment-water-biota interfaces showed that bioavailability depends on the metal, the exposed biota (benthic vs pelagic) and fluctuate under water-level fluctuations. Drought and re-immersion of surface sediments were followed with a reduction of the bioavailable fractions of the trace metals. However, decreases in the water-level led to increase suspended sediments in the water column, which may exert an ecotoxicological risk for the littoral biota. Our results underline how complex the littoral contamination and bioavailability are and promote ecotoxicological approaches in the assessment of the ecological status of large lakes

Abstract:

Abstract Water level regulation for purposes of hydropower production has caused notable changes in the littoral zones of regulated lakes in northern Finland. Marked geomorphological changes have taken place in the lakes with a raised water level. Lowering of the ice cover during the winter has also caused rapid changes in the littoral. Changes in the environmental conditions and aquatic macrophyte communities were studied largely by comparing the regulated Lake Ontojärvi and the unregulated Lake Lentua in the Kainuu area. The general aims of the study were to analyse environmental effects, to produce information of ecological relationships for remedial measures on the littoral and to apply the restoration methods in the management of regulated lakes. The most obvious effect of regulation was the expanded area of extending ice, which caused an almost complete disappearance of large ice-sensitive isoetids (Isoetes lacustris L., Lobelia dortmanna L.). These species were largely replaced by small erosion resistant isoetids (Ranunculus reptans L., Eleocharis acicularis (L.) Roem. & Schult.). Another significant change was the decreased frequency of large helophytes due to increased erosion. A model based on environmental factors was able to predict roughly the main vegetation types. Permanent plot studies showed no significant differences in the stability of the vegetation between the research lakes, which means that the species pool had adapted to the harsh environment. Restoration techniques based on mechanical protection of shorelines and revegetation were applied to Lake Ontojärvi. The hostile environmental conditions caused a rapid decline of the planted species, but tall Salix phylicifolia L. seedlings and Carex rostrata Stokes were able to survive, although in low abundance. More significant remedial measures were provided by the Ecologically-based Regulation Practices (ERP), which have been applied to several lakes under hydropower production. This procedure, which was largely based on the results of the Kainuu studies, offers a simple way to illustrate the differences between various regulation practices. Two case studies showed that an exceptional year with extremely high or low water levels can largely abolish the positive succession achieved by ERP. The huge financial losses caused by ERP for hydropower production have also promoted the use of other conventional restoration measures.

Abstract:

Created lakes are an end product of phosphate mining in Florida. Beginning in 1975, Florida reclamation rules set criteria for phosphate created lakes aiming to approximate the structure of natural lakes, and emphasizing extensive littoral zones with both emergent and submersed vegetation. Lake development relative to lake age and design were examined for 22 phosphate lakes representing a 40-year age trajectory, utilizing water quality and benthic invertebrate communities from littoral and deep-water locations (Chapter 1). The relative importance of morphometry and lake age in the development of littoral plant communities was examined using multiple vegetation surveys throughout the year, in a separate investigation of 39 littoral locations from 13 lakes reflecting age and morphometry gradients (Chapter 2). The same littoral locations were used to investigate benthic community composition in relation to emergent and submersed plant habitats (depth of 0.5 m and 1.5 m respectively), water quality, sediment characteristics, morphometry and lake age (Chapter 3). Phosphate lakes >5.5m deep are warm monomictic water bodies, stratifying from April to October/November, and developing thermoclines at approximately 4 m. Shallow lakes (<5.5 m deep) are polymictic. Phosphate lakes become eutrophic or hypertrophic immediately after creation and remain so through time. Unlike reservoirs, they do not go through a trophic surge, which is an initial period of great productivity that declines as sediment nutrient storage is exhausted. Among the 22 sampled lakes, epilimnetic physical and chemical water quality variables (Secchi depth, chlorophyll a, turbidity, pH) did not differ along the age trajectory. Only specific conductance declined significantly, 10-20 years after lake creation, most probably due to bank stabilization. All water quality variables were within the range of natural lakes in the region, and were most similar to urban rather than suburban or rural natural lakes. Benthic invertebrate abundance (total, Chironomidae, Oligochaeta, invertebrates other than Chironomidae and Oligochaeta) and taxa richness displayed great variability with lake age and did not differ among decadal lake groups at any depths examined (1 m, deepest point). Invertebrate abundance did not differ between littoral and deep habitats, except for lakes >10 years old, where littoral abundance was greater than deep-water abundace, suggesting faster colonization of the littoral zone. Littoral taxa richness was greater than richness in deep-water, which was attributed to taxa other than Chironomidae and Oligochaeta. Deep-water and most littoral habitats were dominated by Chironomidae, whereas Oligochaeta were occasionally dominant in the littoral zone. Dissolved oxygen was the variable explaining most variance of both littoral abundance and richness. Littoral macrophyte communities in phosphate lakes differed from natural Florida lakes. Although most phosphate lakes developed emergent littoral zones, submersed vegetation was absent, with few exceptions of the non-indigenous Hydrilla verticillata. Plants clustered in groups reflecting their hydrological designations. Frequently encountered plants classified either in the obligate wetland plant group, characterized by Typha, and inhabiting mostly intermediate-age lakes or the facultative wetland plant group, characterized by Panicum repens. Most plants in the latter group were bimodally distributed in youngest and oldest lakes, whereas few plants were ubiquitous. Littoral plant community composition was determined by both lake morphology and age, but the relative influence of these two components was not clear. Littoral plant composition was a good predictor of lake development. Morphometric (slope) and sediment characteristics (organic content, particle size) did not differ between the two littoral depths examined (0.5 m and 1.5 m). Slope correlated moderately but significantly with lake age, and organic content was low in all samples. Total littoral benthic invertebrate abundance and its major component Chironomidae, started from low values at newly created lakes and remained low or increased unpredictably with time. Total, Chironomidae, Oligochaeta and Gastropoda abundances did not differ between the depths of 0.5 m and 1.5 m, whereas taxa richness and the abundance of invertebrates other than Chironomidae, Oligochaeta, and Gastropoda was greater at the shallower depth (0.5 m).The relative effect of lake morphology versus age on benthic invertebrate composition was not clear. Total and Chironomidae abundance increased with lake age at 0.5 m, and bank slope at 1.5 m. Both littoral invertebrate abundance and richness in phosphate lakes were lower than in a natural, mesotrophic, macrophyte-dominated lake in the region, characterized by great Oligochaeta densities.

Abstract:

The first section of this dissertation describes the ichthyofaunal community of a mesohaline Chesapeake Bay April--November. Fish assemblages were sampled using two seine gears, a small seine that sampled 352 m 2 and a 914m haul-seine that sampled 144,473 m2. The small seine collected 32 finfish species. The larger gear captured 31 finfish species, including 17 that were not sampled by small gear. Sampled diversity was greater but density estimates were similar to those determined previously by other investigators using flume-net, drop-ring, and otter trawl techniques. Nocturnal abundance of larger fishes far exceeded daylight. Fish abundance and size distribution varied seasonally in both gears. The second section describes the littoral diet composition of striped bass (Morone saxatilis ), bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix), and weakfish (Cynoscion regalis). These species were the most abundant piscivores sampled in the littoral zone. as in previous Chesapeake Bay diet studies the importance of pelagic prey increased with predator size, however, littoral diets evidenced greater dietary diversity and dependence on crustacean prey items. The third section consists of bioenergetic models that predict piscivore growth based on estimated nocturnal consumption and test energetic consequences of diel thermal refugia. Bluefish and weakfish were predicted to achieve better growth rates than those evidenced by field samples of aged fishes collected from across random Chesapeake habitats. Models predict that striped bass experience declining condition during warm water periods due to physiological stresses and poor prey acquisition. Theoretical diel relocation models illustrated how important species and age specific metabolic restrictions due to physical parameters are to fish health. Findings suggest that habitat specific physical dynamics may be as important as prey provision in determination of and spatial assessments of essential fish habitats.

Abstract:

Le fonctionnement des milieux aquatiques d’origine anthropique est étroitement dépendant des usages ; l’environnement des communautés biologiques est donc généralement fluctuant. L’étude du lien entre environnement et organisme est alors plus complexe que dans les environnements stables. Ce travail de thèse vise à mieux comprendre comment l’ichtyofaune réagit face aux changements des conditions environnementales dans une retenue soumise à marnage, la retenue des Bariousses, située sur la Vézère.Une approche multi-échelle à la fois biologique (communauté et individus) et temporelle (cycles annuel et journalier) a été adoptée. Une attention particulière a été donnée à la zone littorale car elle joue un rôle crucial pour les communautés piscicoles des milieux lacustres et constitue la première zone affectée par les variations du niveau de l’eau. L’étude se décompose en quatre parties. La première présente les caractéristiques du site d’étude et la seconde décrit l’impact des variations du niveau de l’eau sur les habitats à partir d’une analyse cartographique de la zone littorale. Les conséquences de la contrainte hydrologique via les modifications des conditions d’habitats ont été ensuite analysées en parallèle des effets de la température de l’eau et de la photopériode. Ensuite, la troisième partie présente l’effet de la variabilité temporelle des conditions environnementales, induites par les variations du niveau de l’eau, sur la composition de la communauté littorale (échantillonnage par pêche électrique). Un système innovant de positionnement par télémétrie acoustique (Vemco Positioning System) a finalement permis dans une quatrième partie d’étudier cet impact à un niveau individuel en analysant le comportement de 90 individus de trois espèces différentes (sandre, brochet et perche commune) avec une précision satisfaisante (erreur moyenne de 3.3 m après filtration). Nous avons mis en évidence que les fluctuations du niveau de l’eau induisent une variabilité temporelle de la surface et du volume occupés par la zone littorale. De plus, une diminution progressive de la complexité structurelle des habitats littoraux avec une tendance à l’homogénéisation (dominance des substrats fins et de l’absence de végétation) est observée suite à un abaissement du niveau de l’eau. Malgré ces changements des conditions d’habitats induites par les variations du niveau de l’eau, la communauté piscicole littorale n’a pas montré de nets changements de composition. Une forte variabilité inter individuelle des réponses comportementales aux fluctuations environnementales est notée mais, la température et la photopériode représentent deux paramètres structurant majeurs de l’activité et du choix des habitats. Le niveau d’eau affecte une partie du peuplement, certains individus fréquentent davantage la zone littorale et sont moins mobiles lorsque les habitats accessibles en bordure sont plus complexes (niveau d’eau élevé). Ces résultats ont permis de proposer quelques pistes de réflexion sur la gestion des niveaux d’eau sur cette retenue, en lien avec le peuplement de poissons Aquatic ecosystem functioning in human-impacted environments is highly dependent of its uses; in consequence, the environment of biological communities is generally fluctuating. Studying the link between environment and organism in fluctuating environments is generally more complex compared to steady environments. The main objective of this work was to better understand how fish populations respond to environmental modifications in a reservoir affected with water level fluctuations (WLF), the Bariousses’s reservoir located on the Vézère River.A multiscale approach was used with different biological (community and individual) and temporal (annual and daily cycles) scales. A special attention was given to the littoral zone as it plays a key role for lake fish communities and since it is strongly affected by WLF. This work is divided in 4 parts. The first part presents the characteristics of the study site and the second part describes the impact of WLF on the studied habitats using a mapping of the littoral zone. The consequences of hydrological stress through the changes in habitat conditions were also analyzed as well as the effects of water temperature and photoperiod. The third part shows the effect of the temporal variability of environmental conditions induced by WLF on the composition of the littoral fish community (sampled by electrofishing). The fourth part presents an innovative positioning system acoustic telemetry (Vemco Positioning System) that was used to study the impact of WLF at the individual scale by analyzing the behavior of 90 individuals from three different fish species (pikeperch, pike and perch) with a satisfactory accuracy (average error of 3.3 m after filtration).The results of this work showed that WLF induced a temporal variability of the littoral zone surface and volume. In addition, a gradual decrease of the structural complexity of littoral habitats was associated with lower water level inducing a trend to homogenization (dominance of thinner substrates without vegetation). Despite these changes in habitats conditions induced by WLF, littoral fish community did not show any clear change in composition. High inter-individual variability of behavioral responses was observed in response to environmental fluctuations, but the temperature and photoperiod were the two major structural parameters controlling fish activity and spatial distribution. Water level affected a part of the fish population since more individuals attended the littoral zone and were less mobile when available habitats were more complex (with a high water level). These results allowed us to suggest some ideas for the management of water levels in the studied reservoir focused on the fish population

Abstract:

Lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) were extirpated from Lake Champlain around 1900 and from the lower four Great Lakes by 1960. Their ecological, commercial and recreational importance has prompted extensive restoration efforts. Despite widespread evidence of natural reproduction by stocked lake trout, there is minimal evidence of survival of wild progeny beyond age-0. Various abiotic and biotic impediments may be preventing self-sustaining lake trout populations from becoming established. Unsuccessful restoration in shallow areas has recently prompted a shift to restoration efforts to offshore, deep reefs in the Great Lakes. The first objective of this study was to develop, test, and implement methods for evaluating lake trout reproduction in deep water, where previously established techniques were ineffective. The second objective addressed the recruitment bottleneck between the emergent fry and juvenile life stages in Lake Champlain, by assessing the severity of predation on lake trout fry by epi-benthic fish. In order to quantify egg density on deep-water habitats (>18 m), we paired a deep-water egg trap with egg bags to establish a relationship between the two types of gear in Lake Champlain. There was no significant difference between densities in the egg bags and deep-water traps, but there was a positive correlation of their ranks (correlation coefficient = 0.514, p<0.0001). The deep-water traps were then used in Lake Michigan to successfully acquire the first egg density data from two sites on the deep Mid Lake Reef Complex. A drop electroshocker was developed to detect fry presence and tested in Lake Champlain in conjunction with emergent fry traps. Both types of gear exhibited similar patterns of fry relative abundance. To assess fry predation in Lake Champlain, two-hour gillnet sets during the period of fry emergence to identify fry predators and to describe how predation patterns changed diurnally and temporally. Seven species of epi-benthic fry predators were identified, including five species that had not been previously identified as fry predators. Yellow perch and rock bass dominated the predator community at two study sites (83% of total catch, N=1179, 77% of all fry predators, N=57). Predator presence and fry consumption was almost entirely nocturnal. There was a linear aggregational response in predator CPUE (fish/hr) to increasing fry relative abundance (p<0.033) but confirmed predators did not exhibit a functional response. There was evidence of a threshold of fry relative abundance at 1 fry/trap/day for the onset and conclusion of fry predation. Temperature was a driving factor in the timing of fry emergence and predator abundance, allowing us to predict the relative impact of predators based on temperature scenarios. Only 5% of the potential predators consumed fry. We used empirical probabilities of consumption to model loss of fry due to predation. This consumption model revealed that predator abundances would have to be extremely high for predation to significantly reduce the population of fry. However, given the relatively high species richness of predators observed at the shallow water study sites, lake trout fry survival is likely to be higher at deep, offshore reefs. Das litorale Makrozoobenthos ist eine bedeutende biotische Komponente in Seen und trägt substantiell zur Biodiversität und Funktion von Seeökosystemen bei. Allerdings unterliegt das Litoral zunehmenden anthropogenen Nutzungen, deren ökologische Auswirkungen jedoch kaum quantifiziert wurden. In dieser Doktorarbeit wurde untersucht, welche Bedeutung maßgebliche Umweltfaktoren auf die Zusammensetzung des litoralen Makrozoobenthos haben, und wie sich anthropogene Nutzungen auf die Zusammensetzung und Funktion des Makrozoobenthos auswirken. Die Zusammensetzung des Makrozoobenthos wurde durch die Uferstruktur, Trophie und das hydrodynamische Regime bestimmt. Die faunistische Ähnlichkeit zwischen Habitaten war jedoch signifikant geringer als zwischen Trophiestufen, so dass die Uferstruktur, und nicht die Trophie, einen größeren Einfluss auf das Makrozoobenthos hat. Strukturelle Degradation führte zu einer Reduktion der Habitatheterogenität, was eine signifikante Verringerung der Diversität und eine signifikant veränderte Artenzusammensetzung verursachte. Infolgedessen war die Komplexität der Makrozoobenthos-Nahrungsnetze an degradierten Ufern signifikant geringer als an natürlichen Ufern. Erhöhte Wasserstandsschwankungen führten zum Ausfall von Wurzelhabitaten und der damit assoziierten Makrozoobenthos-Gemeinschaft. Schiffsinduzierter Wellenschlag führte zur Verdriftung des Makrozoobenthos von ihren Habitaten bereits bei geringen Sohlschubspannungen. Die Effekte von Wasserstandsschwankungen und schiffsinduziertem Wellenschlag wurden jedoch durch Habitate mit hoher struktureller Komplexität verringert. Mit dieser Doktorarbeit konnte ich ein mechanistisches Verständnis darüber erarbeiten, wie anthropogene Nutzungen die Wirkungsbeziehungen zwischen Umweltfaktoren und Artengemeinschaften verändern und welche ökologischen Auswirkungen dies hat. Diese Kenntnisse können als wissenschaftliche Basis zur Bewertung von anthropogenen Beeinträchtigungen des Litorals dienen. Littoral macroinvertebrates are an important biotic component of lakes by contributing substantially to the biodiversity and functioning of lake ecosystems. Humans alter the littoral and riparian areas for various purposes, but the resulting ecological impacts on littoral macroinvertebrates have not been quantified. In this thesis, I investigated the significance of key environmental factors for littoral macroinvertebrate communities and how human alterations of these environmental factors impact the structure and function of macroinvertebrate communities. Macroinvertebrate community composition was significantly related to littoral structure, trophic state and the hydrodynamic regime. The significantly higher compositional dissimilarities among habitats than among trophic state suggested that littoral structure was the more important driver of community composition. Structural degradation caused a significant reduction of habitat heterogeneity and resulted in a significant reduction of species diversity and a significant altered community composition. This caused a significant reduction of macroinvertebrate food web complexity and substantial alterations of the trophic base of the food webs. Climate-change induced water level fluctuations resulted in the loss of root habitats and the specific community associated with this habitat. Ship-induced waves had substantial direct effects, since macroinvertebrates were detached from their habitats by waves even at moderate shear stress levels. However, the impacts of water level fluctuations and ship-induced waves were mitigated by the presence of habitats with high structural complexities. This thesis provided a mechanistic understanding of how human activities alter relationships between environmental factors and biotic communities. This knowledge can be used to develop scientifically sound approaches to assess the persistent human impacts on lake ecosystems.

Les agents tensio-actifs de synthese constituent, a cause de leur large diffusion, une forme de pollution preoccupante atteignant tout le milieu naturel. Ce memoire vise a completer les donnees concernant le devenir, dans differents compartiments du milieu aquatique (eau, sediment), d'une variete de produits tensio-actifs tres utilises actuellement: les alkylbenzenesulfonates lineaires (las). Dans la premiere partie de cette etude sont presentees les connaissances existantes a propos des agents-tensio actifs et plus particulierement les las. Par la suite sont detaillees les diverses etapes de l'elaboration d'une methode analytique basee sur la chromatographie liquide haute performance (hplc), permettant de detecter simultanement les las et les metabolites qui sont susceptibles de se former au cours de leur biodegradation. Des techniques d'extraction ont ete mises, au point dans le but de concentrer et de purifier les echantillons environnementaux en vue de l'analyse chromatographique. En utilisant la methode de l'experimentation in-vitro, nous avons pu mettre en evidence la decomposition, en presence d'oxygene, d'un las et l'apparition de residus de degradation dans des echantillons d'eau et de sediment provenant d'un etang du milieu mediterraneen (l'etang de bolmon). Les metabolites de degradation observes ont ete identifies et ne sont pas persistants. Apres une investigation concernant le degre de pollution du bolmon par les detergents nous avons place un dispositif dans l'etang contenant un sediment artificiellement contamine par du las pour savoir si la biodegradation peut se produire dans le milieu naturel au sein meme du sediment. Les resultats obtenus montrent l'importance preponderante des phenomenes de ramaniement (hydrodynamisme, bioturbation) sur la regeneration du sediment

L'étude des milieux hétérogènes carbonatés et karstifiés trouve aujourd'hui de nombreuses applications dans les problématiques environnementales, comme la description fine de la structure d'un réservoir côtier, support d'un aquifère affecté par une intrusion d'eau salée. Au sud de l'ile de Majorque (Baléares, Espagne), la plate-forme carbonatée de Llucmajor représente un site privilégié pour ce type d'étude.La caractérisation des hétérogénéités ne peut être réalisée sans une description préalable des propriétés des réservoirs carbonatés et des facteurs modifiant la structure du réservoir. Un des paramètres clés définissant la structure hétérogène est la porosité. Au regard de la large gamme de tailles d'hétérogénéités allant du micromètre à la centaine de mètre, l'utilisation de méthodes multi-échelles est nécessaire.Ce travail de thèse a porté sur la détermination multi-échelles de la porosité, allant de la microporosité à la porosité karstique, et l'établissement de relations entre les changements d'échelles d'observation de ces propriétés. Dans un premier temps, l'application de la microtomographie à rayons X extrait la microporosité et la connectivité des réseaux microporeux. Puis, la tomographie a été utilisée avec une résolution plus faible afin d'étudier le réseau micro- et macroporeux à l'échelle de la carotte. A l'échelle du puits, les images de paroi de puits permettent de déterminer la porosité allant des macropores centimétriques aux karsts. Enfin, la géophysique de surface a permis d'observer l'extension des karsts et hétérogénéités dans une grande partie du site.Ainsi, la structure poreuse du site étudié a été intégrée dans la géologie régionale de la plate-forme. L'observatoire installé sur le site pour surveiller la propagation de l'eau salée dans l'aquifère peut être replacé dans son contexte géologique et pétrophysique, afin d'affiner l'interprétation de ses mesures de variations de salinité The study of heterogeneous and karstified carbonates is important in many environmental issues, like the detailed description of a coastal reservoir structure containing an aquifer affected by saline intrusion. At the south of the island of Mallorca (Spain), the Llucmajor carbonate platform represents a typical site for such researches. Characterization of heterogeneities requires a better knowledge of the carbonate reservoir properties and the various factors affecting the structure. One of the key parameters defining the heterogeneous structure is the porosity. According to the wide range of heterogeneity sizes from micrometer to hundreds of meters, the use of multiscale methods is required.This thesis focused on the determination of multiscale porosities from the microporosity to karstic porosity, and of relationships between observation scale changes of these properties. Firstly, the application of X-ray microtomography allows to extract the microporosity and the microporous network connectivity. Then, X-ray tomography was used with a lower resolution to study the micro- and macro-porous network at the core scale. At the borehole scale, the borehole wall images are used to determinate macrostructures from centimeter pores to karsts. Finally, surface geophysics allows to observe the extension of karst and heterogeneities at the site scale.Finally, the porous structure of the study site is integrated into the regional geology of the platform. A hydrogeophysical observatory was installed on site to monitor the spreading of salt water in the aquifer. The interpretation of its salinity measurements can take into account the geological and petrophysical context

Metal contamination can disrupt the trophic links in food webs by altering the taxonomic composition and size structure of benthic invertebrate communities. Benthic invertebrate samples and perch (Perca flavescens) were collected from six lakes along a gradient of metal pollution in Rouyn-Noranda, Canada. The benthic communities of the contaminated lakes were less diverse and had smaller individuals (0.09 mg d.w. and 0.16 mg d.w. vs. 0.22 mg d.w. in the reference lake). The stomach contents of perch from contaminated lakes were less diverse, showed a greater reliance on chironomids or zooplankton, and cannibalism than perch from less polluted lakes. The mean size of prey in perch from contaminated lakes was smaller than in reference lakes (3.7 mg d.w. and 7.39 mg d.w. vs. 47.7 mg d.w. and 67.1 mg d.w. in reference lakes). Abstract:

The goal of this thesis was to examine submerged macrophoe biomass, distribution, and ecosystem effects at scales large enough to incorporate the littoral zone into models of whole lake structure and function. Submerged macrophyte biomass and distribution was shown to be highly variable between growing seasons and primarily dependant upon air temperature and the timing of the onset of the growing season. Within a growing season, a mass balance study showed an undisturbed macrophyte bed to markedly lower phytoplankton biomass: total phosphorus ratios, although the net effect of the bed on the growing season phosphorus budget was minimal. The weedbed preferentially retained phytoplankton biomass while being a source of bacterial production to the open water. These findings were mirrored at the among lake scale, as planktonic respiration and bacterial production were higher in macrophyte dominated lakes than would be expected based on phytoplankton biomass alone. Further, phytoplankton biomass was lower than would be expected based on epilimnetic phosphorus levels, showing that the classical view of pelagic interactions that proposes phosphorus determines phytoplankton abundance, which in turn determines bacterial abundance through the production of organic carbon, becomes less relevant as macrophyte cover increases. Long term phosphorus accumulation in the littoral zone was shown to be linked to macrophyte biomass, and on average almost an order of magnitude higher than calculated from the growing season (June--October) phosphorus budget, suggesting that the bulk of phosphorus accumulation in weedbeds occurs outside of the growing season. Finally, sediment core data showed that while submerged weedbeds accumulate up to four times as much bulk sediment compared to the profundal zone, phosphorus accumulation in weedbeds is much less than observed in the profundal zone. Caractériser la circulation et l'évolution de la qualité des eaux côtières en Manche orientale est un enjeu majeur pour de multiples applications dans une région riche en bio-diversité et en ressources halieutiques. L'hydrodynamisme, dominé par un régime megatidal, joue un rôle essentiel dans les processus de dispersion et de mélange le long du littoral du Nord-Pas-de-Calais. La physionomie en "entonnoir" de la Manche orientale donne lieu à une dyssimétrie de l'onde de marée qui induit un flot plus intense et plus bref que le jusant, engendrant une dérive résiduelle vers la mer du Nord accentuée par les vents dominants de sud-ouest. Ce contexte atypique confère une structure complexe à l'écoulement côtier, dans une région dite "à influence d'eau douce". L'utilisation du modèle hydrodynamique MARS3D a permis de mettre en évidence certains phénomènes complexes à l'échelle régionale et comprendre la gense et la dynamique du fleuve côtier. Grâce à la modélisation haute résolution, à l'échelle dite locale, la circulation dans l'enceinte du port de Boulogne-sur-Mer a pu être caractérisée. Il a été démontré qu'un tourbillon anti-cyclonique, caractéristique du régime de flot, permet une évacuation rapide des traceurs passifs transitant par le port. Lors du jusant, une dérive intense vers le sud piège les traceurs dans le port. Ce piégeage peut être accentué ou atténué selon le sens du vent ou le débit fluvial. Une étude de modifications morphologiques de la rade a été réalisée afin de montrer l'utilité de la modélisation pour proposer des solutions innovantes pouvant améliorer la qualité de l'eau. Un travail similaire a été mené en baie de Somme pour comprendre les problèmes relatifs à la qualité de l'eau. Certaines activités sont soupçonnées d'être à l'origine de contamination microbienne et en particulier les moutons de pré-salés, accusés de contribuer majoritairement à l'apport en E. Coli. En assimilant les traceurs passifs au matériel bactérien, nous avons pu appréhender la problématique de la qualité de l'eau. Notre étude a permis de mettre en exergue les conditions environnementales propices à la rétention ou à l'évacuation de matières contaminantes émises par de nombreuses sources alimentant la baie. La convergence des courants, et l'accumulation du matériel contaminant, ont été révélées au voisinage du Crotoyce qui peut expliquer en partie, la qualité médiocre de ces eaux. Ces schémas de circulation interne à la baie de Sommesuivant les conditions environnementales contribue à améliorer les études sur la qualité de l'eau et les futurs aménagements côtiers durables.

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited The goal of this research was to investigate the performance of low frequency passive sonars in the Arafura Sea. Sound speed profiles representative of the wet and dry monsoon seasons and geoacoustic data were inputted into a finite element primitive equation transmission loss model to model the expected propagation at three frequencies, 10, 50 and 300 Hz. Initial detection ranges for several source/receiver depth combinations and geoacoustic areas (deep/ shallow water) were compared and evaluated. Results demonstrate that low frequency ( -10 Hz) detection ranges suffer due to cutoff frequency problems and to surface-decoupling loss. Propagation in deep water has the added disadvantage of excessive loss of signal power due to spherical spreading considerations. Conversely, higher frequencies (300 Hz) provided extended detection ranges in shallow water due to trapping of energy within the entire 50 m to 100 m water column. Additionally, investigation into advantages to be gained through advanced signal processing techniques shows that improvements of the order of 10 to 15 dB of detection gain are possible through the utilization of inverse beamforming.

[Truncated abstract] The lake boundaries are an important source of sediment, nutrients and chemicals. For life inside the lake, the exchange between the lake boundaries (littoral) and lake interior (pelagic) is of central importance to Limnology as the net flux of nutrients into the water column is both the driving force and limiting factor for most algae blooms found during the stratification period. Consequently, the understanding of the relevant processes defining such an exchange is a further step toward a sound basis for future decisions by lake managers in order to ensure high water quality. The objective of this research was to investigate the physical processes responsible for the exchange of water and particles between the lake boundaries and the lake interior. An integrated approach using field experiments and 3D modelling as applied to Lake Kinneret (Israel) is presented. The field data revealed large-scale metalimnion oscillations with amplitudes up to 10 m in response to westerly diurnal winds, the existence of a well-defined suspended particle intrusion into the metalimnion of the lake, characterized by high concentrations of organic matter, and a well-mixed benthic boundary layer (BBL). The changes in the thermal structure explained the observed vertical and horizontal movements of the suspended particle intrusion. The horizontal advective transport via the metalimnion, associated with the velocities induced by the basin-scale mode-two Poincare wave, controlled the exchange between the lake boundaries and lake interior on daily time scales. The observed BBL over the lake slope varied markedly with time and space. Detailed comparison of simulation results with field data revealed that the model captured the lake hydrodynamics for time scales from hours to days. The model could then be used to extract the residual motions in the various regions of the lake. The residual motions below the surface layer were predominantly forced by the basin-scale internal wave motions, but the residual motion in the surface layer was found to be very sensitive to the curl of the wind field. The residual circulation was responsible for redistributing mass throughout the lake basin on time scales from days to weeks. A clear connection of dynamics of the BBL with the large-scale features of the flow was addressed. The time history of the mixing in the BBL and the resulting cross-shore flux was shown to vary with the phase of the basin-scale internal waves.

This dissertation explores the growing field of study around Maritime Security. While an increasingly common sub-heading in American naval strategy documents, maritime security operations are largely framed around individual threats (i.e. counter-piracy, counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics). Here, we endeavor to explore how a seemingly disparate set of transnational issues fit into a more coherent framework to give greater theoretical substance to the notion of Maritime Security as a distinct concept. In particular, we examine, as our research question, whether the Broken Windows theory, a criminological construct of social disorganization, provides the lens through which to theorize maritime security in the littorals. By extrapolating from criminology, this dissertation engages with a small but growing impulse in studies on insurgencies, terrorism, and piracy to look beyond classic theories of security to better understand phenomena of political violence. To evaluate our research question, we begin by identifying two critical components of the Broken Windows theory, multidimensionality and context specificity. Multidimensionality refers to the web of interrelated individuals, organizations, and infrastructure upon which crime operates. Context specificity refers to the powerful influence of an individual or community's environment on behavior. These two themes, as explored in this dissertation, are brought into stark relief through an application of the Broken Windows theory. Leveraging this understanding of the theory, we explore our research question by employing process-tracing and detailed descriptions across three case studies (one primary and two illustrative)—the Caribbean Basin, the Gulf of Guinea, and the Straits of Malacca and Singapore. In so doing, we demonstrate how applying the lens that Broken Windows provides yields new and interesting perspectives on maritime security. As a consequence, this dissertation offers an example of a theoretical framework that provides greater continuity to the missions or threats frequently binned under the heading of maritime security, but infrequently associated with one another in the literature.

The Belgian Coastal Zone (BCZ) in the Southern Bight of the North Sea is a highly dynamic and optically complex area. This is due to high non-algal particles (NAP) and coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) content which in spring adds together with undesirable blooms of the haptophyte Phaeocystis globosa. There is a need for improving the algorithms for chlorophyll a (chl a) retrieval in these highly turbid waters and for developing algorithms for species detection in order to attempt to create an early warning bloom system. This information will contribute to the knowledge of the extent and magnitude of the P. globosa bloom in Belgian waters. In this study, pure cultures of the main taxa present in the BCZ, diatoms and P. globosa, were combined with field measurements of light absorption of total particles, phytoplankton and dissolved material, pigment determination and phytoplankton counts to address the main objectives. Sampling was performed during 8 cruises covering winter, spring, summer and late summer, and along nearshore-offshore gradients from 2003 to 2006. The area is characterised by a high spatio-temporal variability of IOPs due to the high dynamics of the area in terms of currents, salinity gradients and biological production. During spring the presence of P. globosa modulates the IOPs across all the area, the particle absorption is significantly higher than summer and there is no significant coast-offshore variability for phytoplankton and CDOM. The design of chl a retrieval algorithms assumes negligible absorption of NAP and CDOM in the near infrared (NIR) and the use of a fixed value of specific phytoplankton absorption. It is shown that neglecting the NAP and CDOM absorption in the NIR will have a significant overestimation impact in retrieval of chl a. On the other hand, the specific phytoplankton absorption was found to be highly variable (0.015 „b 0.011 m2 mg chl a-1). Both results will affect directly the retrieved chl a. The spatial variability of CDOM was significant varying between 0.20-1.31 m-1 in the marine area and between 1.81-4.29 m-1 in the Scheldt estuary. CDOM was found to be related to salinity with conservative mixing within the Scheldt estuary and during some seasons in the BCZ, however deviations from conservative mixing suggest other inputs to the CDOM pool. Analyses of the spectral slope of the CDOM absorption curve revealed two main CDOM pools in the area, an allochthonous one delivered by the Scheldt estuary and an autochthonous one associated with the phytoplankton spring bloom decomposition. Algorithms for CDOM retrieval will be affected if the variability in the relation between CDOM and salinity is not taken into account. The optical characterisation of diatoms and P. globosa from the BCZ in pure cultures revealed that the main differences in the phytoplankton absorption spectra were found at 467 and 500 nm corresponding to the absorption of the pigments chlorophyll c3 (chl c3) characteristic of P. globosa and fucoxanthin, respectively. Accordingly, both the absorption at 467 nm and the ratio 500/467 nm were successfully used to discriminate the two taxa in cultures and field samples. This latter indicator was not preserved in the reflectance signal due to degradation of the signal when passing from absorption to reflectance, and thus could not be used for algorithm development. The spectral feature at 467 nm was later used as the basis for the development of a flag-type algorithm to detect chl c3 using either absorption or water-leaving reflectance data. Also, the correlation between the algorithm¡¦s retrieved chl c3 and P. globosa cell number allowed the quantification of the bloom. The main findings of this thesis highlight the importance of the IOPs characterisation for the improvement and development of ocean colour retrieval algorithms in these highly complex waters. Le palmier-dattier constitue une des rares cultures à vocation alimentaire adaptées aux conditions climatiques extrêmes (sécheresse, salinité), telles que rencontrées à Djibouti. Dans un contexte de ressources en eau fortement limitées, la connaissance des modalités de l’alimentation hydrique du palmier dattier est essentielle. L’objectif de ce travail de recherche est d’acquérir cette connaissance, dans le contexte pédoclimatique de Djibouti, par la réalisation d’un suivi in situ du fonctionnement hydrique du système sol-palmier, à l’échelle d’un individu, et la quantification du puits racinaire du palmier-dattier. Un palmier-dattier, pleinement développé, a été instrumenté à l’échelle de la cuvette d’irrigation, à l’aide de plusieurs tubes d’accès de sonde à neutrons, pour le suivi de la teneur en eau volumique du sol, et de plusieurs tensiomètres, répartis de 10 à 160 cm de profondeur. Trois expériences d’infiltration/redistribution a été réalisées successivement, la première sans altérer le fonctionnement du système sol-palmier, la seconde après avoir coupé le palmier, tout en permettant l’évaporation de la surface du sol, la dernière après avoir couvert la surface du sol afin d’empêcher l’évaporation. Les résultats mettent en évidence une forte hétérogénéité des propriétés hydriques du sol, avec une stratification liée au contexte sédimentaire littoral. L’impact du puits racinaire sur la dynamique hydrique du sol est observé jusqu’à 80 cm de profondeur. Pour la période fraîche, les besoins en eau du palmier dattier sont estimés à 130 L par jour, avec une fréquence d’irrigation d’une fois toutes les 2 semaines. Pour la première fois, le coefficient cultural du palmier dattier (kc = 1,39) a été établi dans les conditions climatiques de Djibouti. Les résultats obtenus contribueront à une meilleure gestion de l’irrigation et à une meilleure maîtrise du risque de salinisation du sol dans le contexte pédoclimatique de la République de Djibouti Date palm is one of the few food crops adapted to the extreme weather conditions (drought, salinity), such as encountered in Djibouti. In the context of highly limited water resources, knowledge of the date palm water requirements is essential. The objective of this research was to determine the date palm water requirements, in the Djibouti pedoclimatic context, using in situ monitoring of water transport in the soil-plantatmosphere system, at the scale of a single date palm tree, and to quantify the date palm root water uptake. A fully developed date palm tree was instrumented at the irrigation basin scale, using several access tubes for neutron probe for monitoring the soil volumetric water content, and several tensiometers, installed from 10 to 160 cm depth. Three infiltration/redistribution experiments have been performed successively, the first without alteration of the soil-plant system, the second after cutting off a date palm tree while allowing the surface evaporation, the last with covering the soil surface to avoid evaporation. The results show large heterogeneity in soil hydraulic properties, with stratification linked to the coastline sedimentary context. The root water uptake is observed up to 80 cm depth. The date palm water requirements in the fresh period are estimated at 130 liters per day with a frequency of irrigation of one time every two weeks. For the first time, the date palm cultural coefficient has been established in the Djibouti climatic conditions (kc = 1.39). The obtained results will contribute to better management of irrigation and to improve the control of soil salinization in the pedoclimatic context of the Republic of Djibouti

Le Grand Sousse, partie orientale du gouvernorat de Sousse, abrite l'une des plus importantes métropoles régionales du pays, avec une concentration sur la frange littorale des activités humaines et économiques. L'explosion démographique et la généralisation de la desserte en eau potable en font un important foyer de consommation d'eau. Or cette région est aussi très marquée par l'aridité, cause principale de faibles ressources locales. Dépendante des régions voisines pour son approvisionnement en eau, le Grand Sousse mène depuis toujours une course au captage pour satisfaire des besoins grandissants. La stratégie politique traditionnelle de mobilisation et de transferts des ressources s'achevant, la gestion future préconise le recours intensif aux ressources non conventionnelles, telles les eaux usées traitées et les eaux dessalées. Il s'agit là d'un des principaux leviers d'intervention que le Grand Sousse peut promouvoir pour une "gestion intégrée" du système hydraulique, en plus d'une gestion de la demande axée sur les économies d'eau. La thèse a mobilisé des enquêtes directes sur un échantillon représentatif de ménages, d'unités industrielles et d'hôtels ; elles ont permis de dresser le bilan des actions menées dans le sens de cette nouvelle orientation, et de mieux comprendre les contraintes et obstacles rencontrés. La cartographique a été un outil indispensable à la représentation de cette inadéquation entre offre et demande en eau, du réseau d'approvisionnement et de distribution, et des composantes de la gestion future de l'eau. The demographic explosion and the generalization of the sideboard in drinking water make an important home of water consumption. Now this region is also very marked by the aridity, the main cause of low local resources. Dependent on nearby regions for its water supply, Grand Sousse leads for a long time a running to the harnessing to satisfy growing needs. The traditional political strategy of mobilization and transfers of the resources ending, the future management recommends the extensive appeal to the not conventional resources, some treated waste water and desalinated waters. It is about one of the main control levers of intervention there which Grand Sousse can promote for an "integrated management" of the hydraulic system, besides a management of the demand centred on the savings of water. The thesis mobilized direct inquiries on a representative sample of households, industrial units and hotels; they allowed to draw up balance sheet actions led in the sense of this new orientation, and to understand better the constraints and the met obstacles. The cartographic was a tool indispensable to the representation of this inadequacy between supply and demand in water, the network of supply and distribution, and constituents of the future management of the water. The forward-looking approach allows pulling the air-raid siren at the threat that makes weigh the trend-setting evolution of the demand on the socio-spatial balances, and proposes alternative solutions of this evolution

L'analyse des donnees climatiques montre qu'en Iran pays semi aride, des constrastes importants existent entre régions abondament arrosées et régions désertiques. La répartition temporelle des précipitations est très irreguliére. Compte tenu des conditions géologiques et hydrogéologiques observées sur les deux versants de la chaine du Zagros, les bilans des ressources en eau superficielles et souterraines amènent a définir les ouvrages nécessaires à leur régularisation et à préconiser des aménagements de transfert des eaux. Une critique de l'un des aménagements deja réalisès fait apparaitre les améliorations à apporter dans l'avenir. Les conséquences des crues et des aménagements sur l'environnement sont analysées de façon statistique et dynamique. Un programme d'équipement hydro-electrique est proposé. Le bilan énergétique et financier des réalisations préconiéees est proposé et replace dans le cadre de la politique de l'eau en Iran et de l'économie générale du pays.

La première partie est consacrée à la dérivation formelle d'un nouveau modèle de Saint-Venant visqueux avec termes de friction et de tension de surface additionnels. Nous réalisons ensuite une analyse mathématique de ce modèle en montrant des résultats d'existence de solutions en un sens faible. \\ Dans la deuxième partie, nous développons un nouveau modèle numérique de type ``équilibre'' particulièrement adapté à la simulation de problème impliquant des mouvements de la ligne d'eau et de fortes variations de topographie, dans un contexte bi-dimensionnel. \\ La troisième partie est consacré à l'application de notre modèle numérique à quelques problèmes spécifiques à l'hydrodynamique littorale et c\^otière. En particulier, nous nous intéressons dans un premier temps à la simulation de la propagation en zone c\^otière d'ondes longues de type tsunami. Le droit applicable aux centrales thermiques implique de nombreux enjeux environnementaux. Si la pollution atmosphérique et le changement climatique sont les plus cités, la pollution de l’eau fait également partie de ceux-ci. La protection de l’environnement, que ce soit en droit français ou en droit chinois, se réalise de différentes façons en fonction de l’étape de la vie de la centrale mais aussi du milieu qui cherche à être protégé. Si les similitudes entre le droit français et le droit chinois sont nombreuses, des différences existent également.Dans le cas de la construction future de ces centrales, de manière générale, ou d’un projet précis d’une centrale, la façon de protéger l’environnement a connu d’importants changements ces dernières années. Si le niveau de protection est aujourd’hui encore largement local, il tend à devenir de plus en plus global en prenant en compte un nombre croissant d’éléments durant la phase de réflexion du projet. Dans le cas des émissions quotidiennes dans l’air et dans l’eau des centrales thermiques en fonctionnement, un certain niveau de protection de l’environnement est assuré en les limitant. La limitation passe principalement par la fixation de seuils qui forment le socle fondamental de cette protection quotidienne et sont complétés par d’autres outils juridiques. Enfin, cette protection de l’environnement passe par la vigilance par le biais du système de la surveillance des émissions mais aussi par l’anticipation liée à l’éventuel dysfonctionnement de la centrale et la période post-fonctionnement de celle-ci Applicable law to thermal power plants involves many environmental issues. If air pollution and climate change are the most well-known issues, water pollution is also one of them. Environmental protection, whether in French or Chinese law, is achieved in different ways depending on the stage of the plant’s life but also on the environment that seeks to be protected. If they are many similarities between French law and Chinese law, many differences also exist.In the case of the future construction of these plants in general, or of a specific plant project, the way of protecting the environment has undergone significant changes in recent years. If the level of protection is still largely local nowadays, it tends to become more and more global by taking increasing amount of elements when the power plant project is carried out. In the case of daily air and water emissions from thermal power plants in operation, some environmental protection is ensured by limiting them. The limitation mainly involves the setting of emission limits which try to be gradually lowered. These form the fundamental foundation of this daily protection and are complemented by other legal tools. Finally, this protection of the environment requires vigilance through the emissions monitoring system but also through anticipation linked to the possible malfunction of the power plant and the post-operation period of it

L’anthropisation grandissante des bassins versants côtiers représente une menace importante pour les eaux souterraines et les écosystèmes qui en dépendent, alors appelés « écosystèmes tributaires des eaux souterraines ». A l’image de l’hydrosystème de Biguglia (Corse), l’urbanisation rapide et désorganisée ainsi que les activités industrielles et agricoles développées sur la plaine de la Marana sont autant de sources de dégradation des eaux souterraines. Cette ressource, pourtant stratégique et utilisée pour l’alimentation en eau potable de la région bastiaise, présente aujourd’hui les marqueurs d’une contamination multiple et diffuse sur l’ensemble de la plaine. En plus d’être problématique pour les besoins en eau humains, la dégradation qualitative des eaux souterraines de l’aquifère de la Marana, constitue également une menace pour l’écosystème fragile de la lagune de Biguglia et la pérennité des services écosystémiques qu’il prodigue. Dans ce contexte de pressions croissantes, la connaissance approfondie du fonctionnement de l’hydrosystème de Biguglia s’impose comme un élément essentiel pour garantir une gestion durable de la ressource en eau. Dans ce but, une approche multi-traceurs géochimiques et isotopiques a été développée afin notamment de mieux contraindre l’état de la ressource, les conditions hydrodynamiques et la nature des interactions aquifères-rivières-lagune. L’étude des isotopes stables de la molécule d’eau (18O, 2H) a mis en évidence la complexité de la recharge. L’aquifère de la Marana bénéficie d’une recharge autochtone par l’infiltration directe des précipitations sur la plaine et d’une recharge allochtone par les précipitations en provenance des contreforts schisteux. A ces mécanismes, s’ajoute également la recharge prodiguée par l’infiltration des eaux du Bevincu et du Golu et la contribution latérale des eaux en provenance des contreforts schisteux de la Corse alpine. Le modèle de mélange développé (18O, Cl- et HCO3-) a permis une estimation semi-quantitative des mélanges. Il démontre la complexité du fonctionnement de l’aquifère, avec une différence notable de la contribution des contreforts schisteux en fonction de la localisation et de la profondeur de la ressource. Il apparaît également de manière claire que la lagune de Biguglia est partiellement tributaire des eaux souterraines. La plaine de la Marana est sujette à une dégradation qualitative liée à la présence excessive de nitrates (NO3-) et de micropolluants organiques. D’après les isotopes du NO3- (15N-NO3-, 18O-NO3-) et du Bore (11B), les principales sources d’azote sont le sol et les eaux usées. La corrélation entre concentrations en NO3- et temps de résidence des eaux (3H et CFCs) a mis en avant la capacité de stockage et d’archivage des eaux souterraines de l’aquifère de la Marana. Mise au regard de l’évolution de l’occupation des sols sur la plaine, la modification progressive des sources azotées enregistrée dans l’aquifère a permis de retracer la trajectoire socio-environnementale de l’hydrosystème de Biguglia. L’état contemporain dégradé de la ressource découle en grande partie de l’héritage des pollutions liées aux activités humaines historiques. Le modèle conceptuel élaboré grâce à ces travaux apporte de nouveaux éléments de compréhension qui pourront aider à l’instauration de stratégies de gestion pertinentes, assurant la pérennité future des ressources en eau et des services écosystémiques qui en dépendent The exacerbated anthropization of coastal hydrosystems poses a significant threat to groundwater and ecosystems that depend on it, then called "groundwater-dependent ecosystems". Like the Biguglia hydrosystem (Corsica, France), rapid and disorganized urbanization, as well as industrial and agricultural activities developed on the Marana plain are major sources of groundwater degradation. This strategic resource, used for the drinking water supply of the Bastia urban area, presents the markers of multiple and diffuse contaminations. In addition to being problematic for human water needs, the groundwater qualitative degradation of the Marana aquifer also constitutes a threat to the fragile ecosystem of the Biguglia lagoon and the sustainability of the ecosystem services it provides. In this context of increasing pressures, a strong knowledge of the Biguglia hydrosystem behavior is essential to ensure sustainable management of water resources. To this end, a multi-tracer geochemical and isotopic approach has been developed in order to better constrain the state of the groundwater resource, the hydrodynamic conditions and the nature of aquifer-river-lagoon interactions. The study of the stable isotopes of the water molecule (18O, 2H) has highlighted the recharge complexity. The Marana aquifer benefits from an indigenous recharge through direct infiltration of precipitation on the plain and an allochthonous recharge through precipitation from the schistous reliefs. The infiltration of river water from the Bevincu and Golu rivers and the lateral contribution of water from the schistous reliefs also contribute to the aquifer recharge. The developed mixing model (18O, Cl- and HCO3-) allowed a semi-quantitative estimation of the mixing processes. It demonstrates the complex aquifer behavior, with a significant difference in the contribution of schistous groundwater depending on the location and depth of the resource. It is also clear that the Biguglia lagoon is partially dependent on groundwater. The Marana plain is subject to qualitative degradation due to the excessive presence of nitrates (NO3-) and organic micropollutants. According to the NO3- (15N-NO3-, 18O-NO3-) and Boron (11B) isotopes, the main sources of nitrogen are soil and wastewater. The correlation between NO3- concentrations and water residence time (3H and CFCs) highlighted the storage and the groundwater archiving capacity. With regard to the evolution of land use, the progressive modification of the nitrogen sources recorded in the aquifer made it possible to trace the socio-environmental trajectory of the Biguglia hydrosystem. The contemporary degraded state of the resource mainly results from the pollution legacy linked to historical human activities. The conceptual model developed provides new elements that can help towards the implementation of relevant management strategies, to ensure the sustainability of water resources and associated ecosystem services

Abstract:

The issue of sustainability has greatest significance in the midst of unilateral bio-socioeconomic degradation resulting from intense and increasing societal pressures placed on the unified global ecology. In such an environment, sustainable development seeks to manage natural resources within a free market economy, aiming to meet the needs of today's population, and to protect and enhance current resource quality and abundance. In this light, techniques of integrated sustainable primary production and wastewater management are the subject matters of this applied research. There are many researchable issues which could be addressed within the subject matter. The first focus in the research scope was driven by the most severe sustainability issue facing Central Queensland (Australia) in 2000: the depletion and degradation of freshwater supplies. Central Queensland (CQ) is an arid sub-tropical region that has suffered from a marked reduction in rainfall and increase in temperature over the last 100 years, {Miles, 2004 #172}, and by the year 2000, conditions had been exacerbated by eight years of severe drought and warmer than average temperatures and resulted in widespread animal and crop failures due to freshwater shortages. Such a problem required a multi-faceted ecological, social, and economic approach. Hence, research centred on investigating the science of integrating regional water-related industries and agribusiness, and biodiverse ecosystems to achieve water and wastewater reuse applications, and associated eco-socioeconomic benefits. Specifically, this research investigates the integration of (a) electrical power station wastewater (b) barramundi culture, (c) red claw culture, (d) constructed wetlands (for water quality management and habitat creation), and (e) hydroponic flower culture. This research produced outcomes of integrated water and wastewater reuse and recycling, marketable agriproducts production (fish, crayfish, and flowers), water and wastewater reuse and conservation, wetland primary production, carbon dioxide sequestration, aquatic pollution control, and biodiversity creation and support. Successful design and management, experimental trialing and evaluation of system components and subjects, and the development of a knowledge base including static and dynamic system models, represent advances in respective research areas, and underpin the emerging discipline of integrated systems approaches to eco-socioeconomic development. Additionally, several gaps in the current body of knowledge regarding integrated systems were filled, and interactive management tools were developed. Apart from this study, the integration of technologies (as described above) has not, to this author's knowledge, been accomplished.

Abstract:

L'acquisition de paramètres marins à partir des données spatiales de la couleur de l'eau nécessite l'élimination de la contribution de l'atmosphère au signal mesuré par le capteur. En effet, la majorité du rayonnement solaire mesuré par les instruments optiques dans les longueurs d'ondes qui intéressent la couleur de l'eau provient de la diffusion par les molécules de l'air et les aérosols atmosphériques. L'élimination de la contribution de l'atmosphère est appelée correction atmosphérique (CA). Pour les eaux claires, les méthodes de CA supposent une réflectance marine nulle dans le proche infra-rouge (PIR). Ceci permet d'estimer la réflectane de l'atmosphère et de l'extrapoler vers les bandes du visible, et donc de déterminer le signal marin qui contient les informations sur les propriétés optiques des eaux marines. Cette hypothèse n'est cependant pas vérifiée pour les eaux turbides, qui représentent la quasi totalité des eaux côtières. Par conséquent, de nombreux algorithmes de CA ont été développés pour les eaux côtières incluant des hypothèses alternatives. L'objectif de ce travail de thèse est de valider et d'améliorer ces méthodes de CA pour les images MODIS Aqua. Pour cela, diverses approches de CA développées pour les eaux cotières ont été comparées et validées : (1) l'algorithme standard de la NASA, (2) le "NIR Similary spectrum algorithm" qui inclut des hypothèes d'homogénéité spatiale des réflectances marines et atmosphériques, (3) l'algorithme qui utilise les bandes dans l'infrarouge moyen pour la CA dans les eaux très turbides, et (4) un algorithme utilisant un réseau de neurones artificiels. L'exercice de validation à partir de données in situ, et en fonction des types d'eaux, a permis d'identifier différentes pistes d'amélioration pour l'estimation du signal marin. L'un d'entre elles comprend l'utilisation de relations spectrales pour forcer les modèles de réflectances marines utilisés par les algorithmes CA pour estimer le signal marin dans le PIR. Des modifications ont été apportées aux modèles de réflectances marines de l'algorithme standard de la NASA et du "NIR Similarity spectrum algorithm". Chacun des modèles a été forcé avec des relations spectrales préalablement validées grâce à des données globales. Une étude de sensibilité et une validation de ces algorithmes modifiés à partir de données MODIS-Aqua dans la Manhe Orientale/Mer du Nord et la Guyane Française ont démontré que les modifications suggérées amélioraient les estimations du signal marin dans les eaux côtières optiquement complexes To acquire marine parameters from remote sensing ocean color data, the sensor-measured signal needs to be corrected for the atmospheric contribution. Indeed, the solar radiation reflected by air molecules and atmospheric aerosols is significant in the sensor bands of interest for ocean color applications. The removal of the atmospheric contribution is called the atmospheric correction (AC). In open ocean waters, the AC relies on the assumption that the water is totally absorbent in the near infrared (NIR) part of the spectral region, allowing to retrieve the atmospheric contribution and to extrapolate it to the visible spectral range, and thus to determine the marine signal that contains the information on the optical properties of seawaters. However, this assumption is not valid in highly productive and turbid coastal waters. Hence, AC approaches for coastal waters need to rely on alternative assumptions. This Ph. D. thesis has as main objective to validate and improve these AC methods developed for contrasted coastal waters, with a focus on MODIS Aqua images. First, a validation and comparison of existing AC methods, relying on diverse assumptions and methods, is performed. Therefore, four commonly used AC methods are selected, (1) the standard NIR AC approach of NASA, (2) the NIR similarity spectrum AC approach including assumptions of spatial homogeneity in the water and aerosol reflectance, (3) the switching algorithm using the short wave infrared bands for AC in highly turbid waters, (4) an Artificial Neural Network algorithm. With the help of a validation exercise based on in situ data and as a function of the water type, several areas of improvement are delineated, including the use of spectral relationships to constrain NIR-modelling schemes. Modified NIR-modelling schemes are suggested for the standard NASA and NIR similarity spectrum AC methods. Both are forced with globally valid spectral relationships. Sensitivity studies and validation exercises, using MODIS-Aqua images in the Eastern English Channel/North Sea and French Guiana waters, are conducted showing that the suggested modified NIR-modelling schemes improve the estimations of the marine signal in contrasted coastal waters

Le changement climatique est incontestable et affecte les océans. L'observation à long terme d'indicateurs comme le plancton peut permettre l'étude de ces changements. Le suivi du plancton dans les eaux côtières d'Europe représente une source de données importante actuellement sous-exploitée et sur laquelle cette étude est basée. Des outils analytiques ont d'abord été conçus pour résoudre des divergences taxonomiques entre les données et pour réaliser l'analyse temporelle. L'étude du plancton à L4 de 1998 à 2007 révèle de profonds changements dans la composition phytoplanctonique des blooms de printemps et d'automne, et des variations à long terme dans l'abondance des taxa dominants du zooplancton. Le phytoplancton gouverne la succession saisonnière des larves méroplanctoniques. Les changements de température de surface et de vent contrôlent les variations temporelles des communautés planctoniques. Les variations spatio-temporelles du zooplancton ont été comparées à 4 sites de 1998 à 2007 : Ston (Mer du Nord), L4 (Manche), MC (Mer Tyrrhénienne ), et C1 (Mer Adriatique). La structure des communautés est globalement stable, la saisonnalité étant la principale source de variabilité à long terme. La chlorophylle a et le vent expliquent les variations de la communauté zooplanctonique à Ston et L4 alors que c'est la température à MC et C1. Cette étude confirme l'extrême adaptabilité des communautés zooplanctoniques à un environnement variable. Elle souligne l'importance de facteurs tels que taxonomie et échelle temporelle pour l'analyse de séries, et la nécessité de maintenir les séries à long terme pour le suivi de futurs changements dans le contexte du changement climatique Climate change is unequivocal and dramatic changes are under way in the world's oceans. Long-term observations of indicators such as plankton can provide a better understanding of these changes. Considerable efforts have been made to monitor plankton in European coastal waters and have produced a large amount of datasets yet to be fully exploited. Analytic tools were first developed to solve taxonomic discrepancies in datasets and for temporal analyses. Time series analysis of plankton at L4 from 1988 to 2007 reveals profound changes in the composition of the spring and autumn phytoplankton blooms, and long-term variations in abundance of the dominant zooplankton taxa. Phytoplankton is driving the seasonal succession of meroplanktonic larvae. Changes in sea surface temperature and wind conditions control temporal patterns of plankton communities. Spatio-temporal patterns of zooplankton are compared at 4 sites: Ston (northern North Sea), L4 (wes tern English Channel), MC (Tyrrhenian Sea), and C1 (Adriatic Sea) from 1998 to 2007. The communities structure is on average stable and seasonal variations are the main source of long-term variability. Chlorophyll a and wind are responsible for the community patterns observed at Ston and L4 whereas temperature is the main driver at MC and C1. This study supports evidences of the extreme flexibility of zooplankton communities in adjusting to a variable environment. We highlighted the importance of factors such as taxonomy and temporal scale on time series analysis, and the necessity of maintaining long-term series to monitor future changes in the context of climate change

Ces travaux de thèse concernent la morpho-dynamique d'une plage de poche sableuse, située en environnement macrotidal. L'étude est menée sur la plage de Porsmilin, une plage de type intermédiaire avec une terrasse de basse mer. Cette étude s’appuie sur des observations in situ acquises lors de campagnes de mesures, organisées au cours de cette thèse. Le principal objectif est de caractériser le rôle de la pente, dans l'équilibre dynamique existant entre les processus hydrodynamiques et la morphologie de la plage. La dynamique des niveaux d’eau, de la propagation des ondes infragravitaires et de la turbulence sont examinés et mis en regard des variations morphologiques de la plage, en particulier de la pente locale de la plage. Les niveaux d’eau sont globalement sous-estimés par les formulations empiriques proposées dans la littérature. Des formules adaptées au site de Porsmilin sont présentées. L’impact de la brisure de pente observée le long du profil de plage sur la dynamique de la plage, est étudié. La variabilité de la position de la brisure de pente est impliquée dans les processus d’accommodation à court terme de la plage. Cela se traduit par un retrait vers le haut de plage de la brisure de pente, permettant une dissipation plus efficace de l’énergie incidente par la terrasse de basse mer. En revanche, ce retrait peut conduire, à une concentration d’énergie importante en haut de plage, lors de conditions particulièrement énergétiques, associées à un marnage important. La position de la brisure de pente pourrait être un bon indicateur de l'état de vulnérabilité de la plage face à des évènements énergétiques, ce qui constitue une information primordiale dans le contexte actuel d’érosion généralisée des littoraux sableux This PhD work is focused on the morphodynamic of a pocket beach, located in a macrotidal environment. The beach type is intermediate, with a low tide terrace. The study is based on in situ observations, collected during field campaigns organized during the PhD. The objective is to characterize the beach slope impact on hydrodynamics processes and beach morphology. The water levels dynamic, infragravity waves propagation and turbulence generation in the swash zone, are examined and linked to the beach slope variability.The empirical formulations proposed in the literature show large under-estimations of water levels in the site. Empirical formulations adapted to the beach are proposed.The characteristic break slope presents along the cross-shore profile of low tide terrace beaches is studied. The variability of the break slope location is relevant to explain the short term accommodation of the beach. Under incident wave energy, the location of the beach slope moves shoreward, allowing higher wave dissipation by the low tide terrace. Nevertheless, the reflective part is reduced, which leads to a vulnerable state of the upper beach under strong forcing associated with high tide. The location of the beach slope is found to be a good indicator of the beach vulnerability under a given wave forcing. It provides valuable information in the globalized beach erosion context

Les marais littoraux de Charente Maritime représentent des systèmes hydrauliques sur lesquels les données existantes sur la qualité de l'eau sont limitées. Ce déficit d'information représente un frein à la bonne gestion de ces écosystèmes. Leur situation intermédiaire entre continent et océan leur confère un rôle prépondérant au sein de ces entités. Par ailleurs, les marais représentent un patrimoine écologique majeur où le suivi du compartiment aquatique est indispensable en vue d'améliorer la connaissance et d'apprécier l'évolution de ces milieux.Dans ce cadre, un réseau de suivi de la qualité des eaux des marais a été mis en place sur la base du SEQ-Eau (système d'évaluation de la qualité des cours d'eaux) en 2003 par l'UNIMA (Union des Marais de Charente-Maritime) dans le but de créer un référentiel " marais "répondant aux exigences de la DCE (Directive Cadre sur l'Eau européenne). Mais avant d'apprécier la qualité des eaux des marais, il est nécessaire de comprendre leur fonctionnement. Les objectifs de la thèse sont de trois ordres. Le premier était de dégager une typologie de nature d'eau des marais en valorisant les données issues du suivi patrimonial de l'UNIMA. Dans un deuxième temps, le suivi analytique des eaux et du fonctionnement a été approfondi (ajout de paramètre chimique, biologique et géographique) sur un nombre restreint de stations.Une typologie, basée sur une méthode statistique permettant d'appréhender à la fois les variabilités spatiale et temporelle dans le classement des stations en groupes, est composé de 7 groupes en marais doux et de 5 en marais salés. Le suivi des marais pendant prés de 1,5ans par les paramètres de la matière organique, de l'ensemble des compartiments planctoniques constituant les réseaux trophiques planctoniques et la diversité fonctionnelle du phyto- et du méso-zooplancton, ont permis de confirmer un certain nombre d'hypothèses sur le fonctionnement des marais et sur la typologie de nature d'eau, concernant notamment : (i)le rôle écologique des marais, (ii) l'influence des écosystèmes adjacents du méta-écosystème Pertuis-charentais et (iii) leur capacité de résilience.Le fonctionnement des marais salés semble contrôlé par un double mécanisme : la marée et le type d'activité anthropique dans les bassins déterminant le taux de renouvellement des eaux qui conditionne le type de réseaux trophiques en place et leur succession. Dans les marais doux, un schéma 'classique' de la succession des réseaux trophiques planctoniques aété dégagé. La dominance du phytoplancton et des réseaux trophiques herbivores et multivores, semblerait cohérent avec les fonctions écologiques d'épuration et d'habitat/nourricerie caractéristiques des zones humides. Ce fonctionnement classique peut être altéré par différents mécanismes : le renouvellement de l'eau ou le développement des macrophytes. D'une part, le faible renouvellement d'eau de certains marais peut conduire à l''emballement' du système et provoquer des phénomènes d'eutrophisation, altérant les propriétés de l'écosystème (injection d'azote atmosphérique ou efficacité écotrophique). Enfin, les macrophytes sont plus compétitrices que le phytoplancton dans les milieux peu profond tel que les canaux de marais. Leur capacité a utilisé les nutriments des sédiments permette leur développement et empêche celui du phytoplancton (limitation par la lumière). La dégradation importante de la biomasse macrophytique par les bactéries en période estivale peut engendrer de fortes hypoxies.Quelques indicateurs basés sur des paramètres simples sont proposés pour suivre l'état trophique du système (chlorophylle par classe de taille, biomasse bactérienne), ou bien de repérer un état susceptible de virer sur une eutrophisation (espèces de rotifère spécifiques des périodes pré-eutrophisation).

Abstract:

Les marais de l'Ouest ont été gagnés sur les sédiments fluvio-marins par poldérisation débutée dès le moyen âge. Les aménagements hydrauliques avaient, initialement, des objectifs sanitaires et d'élevage. A partir des endiguements, ils ont divisé les territoires en marais mouillés et marais desséchés. Depuis les années 1970 le développement des cultures intensives de céréales a nécessité un rabaissement complémentaire de la nappe par drainage en partie pour augmenter la désalinisation de surface et limiter l’engorgement des sols. Néanmoins, ces territoires restent caractérisés par des nappes proches de la surface. En conséquence les profils hydriques vont être gouvernés par les conditions météorologiques y compris l'évapotranspiration, la pluviométrie, mais également par les remontées capillaires issues d'une nappe salée. D'autre par la nature argileuse des sols et ses propriétés de retrait conditionnent énormément le fonctionnement hydrodynamique et les évolutions de structure.La première partie du travail a été de suivre les évolutions des profils hydriques et de salinité en parcelles non drainées (prairies) et en parcelles drainées (Maïs, Blé, Tournesol). Ces suivis ont été complétés par les mesures des niveaux de nappes et par des mesures tensiométriques via des bougies poreuses implantées à différentes profondeurs. L'objectif final a été de calculer et modéliser les profils de réserve utile (RU) et de RU "résiduelle" utilisable par les plantes. Dans ces systèmes alimentés par les remontées capillaires, le réseau racinaire puise l'eau dans la zone non saturée de surface (vadose) puis dans la zone saturée sous-jacente. La teneur en eau caractéristique de l'interface zone non saturée - zone saturée a été déterminée par analogie entre les chemins d'état de la matrice argileuse le long de sa courbe de retrait et du sol le long de sa courbe de compaction. Les profils de RU résiduelle utilisable par les plantes ont été calculés à partir des profils de teneurs en eau puis comparés aux profils de RU obtenus via les données de station météorologique. Ces profils de RU résiduelle ont pu être écrits sous forme d'équation polynomiale du second degré puis modélisés. Dans cet environnement alimenté par les remontées capillaires, ces profils de RU résiduelles peuvent être modélisés à partir d'un paramètre facilement mesurable en surface qui prend en compte la structure du sol et les conditions météorologique : soit la teneur en eau à 10 cm de profondeur. Cette modélisation reste suffisamment réaliste pour être utilisée comme un outil prédictif face à la pédodiversité et/ou les rendements de culture.A ce travail s'ajoute deux études préliminaires : - les mesures des conductivités thermiques effectives de ces sols par la méthode du fil chaud et leurs modélisations dans les systèmes biphasés : eau - argile et air - argile, mais également pour les systèmes triphasés non saturés : eau - air - argile. Les perspectives sont la modélisation des transferts thermiques et hydriques dans le sol à partir de la surface, - et l'élaboration d'un protocole d'imprégnation-polymérisation des sols argileux humides par des résines de type HEMA. Cette imprégnation permet d'envisager la confection de lames minces dans le matériau argileux induré avec conservation de sa structure initiale humide. Les perspectives sont la pétrographie quantitative à l'interface racine - sol le long de profils verticaux dans les environnements argileux à degrés de saturation et structure évolutives The coastal marshlands are territories generally reclaimed on primary fluvio-marine sediments. They result from hydraulic managements and/or polderization which may date from the Middle Ages. Historically these hydraulic managements were built for goals of wholesomeness, breeding and farming. They isolate two territories: the dried marshes and the wet marshes. For the intensive cereal crops the slow drying caused by land reclamation was recently improved by the drainage, in part for increase the depth of desalinization and decrease waterlogging. Nevertheless, these territories remain characterized by shallow ground water of initial salt water. Consequently, the hydric profiles are governed by the meteoric conditions including the Evapotranspiration, the rainfall, but also the capillarity rises from the salt groundwater. Moreover, the clay dominated nature of the soils and their drastic shrinkage properties govern the hydrodynamic functioning and the soil structure behavior.The first part of the work was the monitoring of the water content and salinity profiles in drained cereal crops and in undrained grasslands. These measurements have been completed by the ground water level and tensiometric monitoring. The final goal was the calculation and modeling of the available water capacity (AWC) and plant available water (PAW) profiles. In these systems mainly supplied by the capillarity rises, the root network gets water in the subsurface vadose zone and then in the deeper saturated groundwater zone. The water content characteristic of the interface between the vadose and saturated zone was determined by comparison between the clay material state paths along its shrinkage curve and along its compaction curve. The PAW profiles were calculated from the water content profiles and then compared to the AWC profiles. The PAW profiles have been equated as polynomial second degree equations. In these shallow groundwater environments the PAW profiles have been modeled taking into account an easy measurable surface parameter which includes the soil structure behavior and the meteoric conditions: i.e. the water content measured at 10 cm depth. The PAW modelling remains sufficiently realistic to be used as a tool for farming management. Two preliminary studies were added to this work: - the measurement of effective thermal conductivity of the clayey soils by the transient hot wire method, and the modeling of the effective thermal conductivity of biphasic air-clay and water-clay media, but also triphasic unsaturated air-water-clay media. The prospect is the modeling of thermal and hydric transfer from the surface to the depth. - and the elaboration of a protocol of impregnation - hardening for wet clay dominated soils by HEMA resins. This impregnation allows the making of thin sections in these clay materials with conservation of their initial wet structures. The prospective is the quantitative petrography at the root - clay matrix interface along vertical profiles in clayey soils at different degrees of saturation and different structures

This research base on the ocean mooring data in South China Sea during ASIAEX period and utilize the decomposing EOF to analysis the variation of sea water temperature which effects mainly by the internal tide and nonlinear internal wave. The EOF method can efficiently detect the activity of internal tide or nonlinear internal wave in water column. Base on the acoustic transmission track of ASIAEX and using the measuring ocean data as the input data for acoustic model can describe the acoustic field in the shelf break area. The bathymetry is the major factor of the acoustic energy changing in underwater. The variation of ocean environment in littoral waters always high than in deep water no matter in temporal and spatial scale. The individual parameters of ocean environment, such as seawater temperature, sediment and water depth, have different variation in scale. The variation range of these parameters can present by uncertainty. To develop an ocean environment model analysis the acoustic field of effecting by ocean parameter. The parameters of most effecting acoustic field are sound speed of sediment, sound speed of basement, density of sediment and attenuation coefficient in order. The wave equation is the basis to describe the property of underwater sound with proper initial condition and boundary condition for acoustic model to analysis the acoustic energy. The operation of acoustic model relies on precise ocean data as input in order to get correct acoustic field. This research construct a computing module that couple ocean environment and acoustic model to evaluate the sonar performance. At the end of this research, to analyze the characteristic of underwater sound around Taiwan water base on the ocean database building by academic in order to explore the operation of sonar performance. This result gives a clear picture of sonar detection that can prompt the sonar operating ability.

Abstract:

This Ph.D. thesis focuses on the characteristic of littoral vegetation in reservoirs with a storage function and on the factors that may affect it. The current state of the littoral vegetation in different types of biotopes was detected by a detailed survey of the littoral in Lipno reservoir. Complexes of environmental factors characteristic for different types of biotopes were described. The dynamics of littoral vegetation in response to changes in water level fluctuations was monitored in a protected bay during three years. Based on the results, the vegetation zonation was described in the eulittoral zone of an aquatic ecosystem with irregular fluctuations in water levels. The thesis also deals with the use of a breakwater structure to protect littoral vegetation in erosion exposed biotopes. The results of all three studies are used as a basis for proposals for supporting the development of littoral vegetation in the eulittoral zone in reservoirs as defined in the Water Framework Directive.

Community of phytophilous macrozoobenthos (PM) represents an important component of fishponds ecosystems concerning biomass as well as essential part of food webs. There are evident linkages between PM and water macrophytes. Their influence on PM is the main topic of many scientific papers which state three main water macrophyte characters with the strongest impact on PM - coverage, biomass and morphological complexity. The main aim of this diploma theses was to analyse linkages between four different water macrophyte species and PM in eight different fishponds devided into two groups according their localisation- třeboňské a rakouské. Water macrophyte species have any influence on PM abundance in both fishpond groups. Water macrophyte species have significant influence on biomass of PM in třeboňské and rakouské fishponds analysed together and also in both fishpond groups analysed separately. PM biomass was significantly higher in Glyceria maxima during first sampling period in both fishpond groups. Water macrophyte species have significant influence on PM diversity in třeboňské and rakouské fishponds analysed together and in rakouské fishponds group analysed separately. Just one variable, water macrophyte species, was analysed in my diploma thesis, but some others abiotic and biotic variables influence phytophilous macrozoobenthos community in fishponds littoral zones as well. That´s why conclusions of this thesis should be interpreted circumspectly.

Abstract:

Sand-pits which were formed especially in the floodplain of the Lužnice River since the 1950s currently constitute important landscape element of the Třeboň Basin. My diploma thesis is focused on the assessment of the impact of land use on the former sand-pits in the region of Veselí nad Lužnicí. Field investigations were carried out from the beginning of June till the end of August 2008. I mapped the land use of this area by using a map key. I put down particular areas {--} agricultural areas, forest areas, water areas, bild-up areas, other areas {--} into map photographs. The total area of the mapped territory was 989 hecteres. The biggest part of the area comprises of forest growths and field-grown plants. Water areas (with the main element of the mapped area {--} a system of former sandpits) formed 23% of the total area. On the bank sof the sand-pits were placed phytosociological relevé, which illustrated littoral vegetation and environment in which this vegetation is located, and what is the influence of human activity on vegetation. I placed 74 phytosociological relevé in this system. I recorded 125 plant species {--} out of these were 104 herb plants and 21 woody species. I recorded 41 nitrophilous, 52 wetland, 16 ruderal and 2 stronngly endangered species. Altogether, 20 water samplings were carried out. Horusice I sand-pit is the richest in nutrient, the poorest in nutrients is Horusice sand-pit.
