Full textAfter an analysis of the particularities of Greek Literature in the19th, 20th and 21st centuries, and using our corpus of texts referring to Constantinople, we try to show how this city appears in literature, how its images and representations are influenced by history and politics. We thus have a more precise idea of the different aspects of this city found in literature ; how it inspires images, impressions and feelings, where history and the symbolic rooting of Constantinople in the Greek World are always present. We follow the evolution of this world, and finally its transformation. The Greek authors we study give us a literary vision of Constantinople through which we can read the evolution of Greek mentality from the days of the creation of the Hellenic state to the present time

We have stressed his originality : an inextricable part of history, he has often helped protect the faith, culture, and freedom of Greece, by his safeguard of the Helleniclanguage ; to the point that some have become figures in their national history

Full textWe intend to analyze how the act of remembering is a central element in the post-war works of Kosmas Politis (1888-1974), as well as it already underlied Eroica’s narration, his most famous novel published in 1938. We thus study the way that Politis introduces in Yiri, In Hatzifrango and Terminus the plots of popular novels such as the social novel or the sentimental novel. These can arouse an impression of familiarity in the reader reinforced by the influence of readings or translations of Politis himself. Moreover, the narrations through intertextual quotes or allusions to theatrical plays and operas, already known to the reader, also become dramatic. The reader, having a spectator’s role, is forced to contemplate the precariousness of existence, time and territory. The societies which have disappeared are at last described by narrator-witnesses who face the fragility of their memories. However, the musical art they use allows these pictures of the past to survive. Therefore, bearing the trace of novels and plays of bygone eras, the post-war stories of Politis are composed according to a new melody. The author’s own music moves away from the major key of Eroica, adopting oriental influences from amanes and mixing with other European musical forms, to become less homogeneous and more dissonant. More than the visual arts, it is musical art that shapes Politis’ postwar novels as it expresses the fleetingness of time without excluding its possible resurrection

Full textThis study examines the presence of the Ulysses myth in Modern Greek poetry of the 20th century. It contains a thematic comparison of different motifs of the myth, as told in the Odyssey of Homer. The main methodology used for this study is based on the theories of intertextuality. Various rearrangements and reinterpretations of the myth, concerning either the personalities of the mythical figures or certain events of the epopee, are examined and analysed in the present thesis. The Ulysses myth has interested many authors all over the world including a considerable number of Greek authors. During the last century, recourse to the ancient myths has been proven very important, and, together with the political events in Greece and the literary movements, offers a rich study material. The Greek poets –cosmopolites, traditional bourgeoisie, communists, surrealists etc. – have treated the myth each by emphasising the aspect that seemed most important according to his ideology and poetics. Thus, we have attempted to perceive the evolution of the Ulysses myth in parallel with the history of Greece over last century

Full textMy research deal with the work of Anatole France, Henri de Régnier and René Boylesve, oftenly described as passeist. Using both linguistic and literary viewpoints, I tackle the curious paradox unifying these authors who, during the Belle Epoque, declared themselves classicists. A questionning on concepts such as modernity, contemporaneity and legacy underlies this project

Full textThe most important modernistic movement ever known in Greece in the field of prose fiction, mainly illustrated by Yorgos Delios's and Stelios Xefloudas's lyrical novels, Alkiviadis Yannopoulos's extravagant stories and Nikos Gavriil Pentzikis's or Yorgos Themelis's experimental texts, rose around the Thessalonician review Macedonian Days (Μακεδονικές Ημέρες, 1932-1939) and its instigator Petros Spandonidis, a critic and a writer. Which were the “stakes” and the modalities of a “modernisation” (εκσυγχρονισμός) in Greek literature between the two world wars, perceived in the collective work of this review and of the prose writers who where its very spirit? Answering this question means getting out the narrow framework of a hypothetical “School of Thessalonica”. It first means describing the spring in the Greek literary field of a city newly integrated to the nation, concomitantly to a project of cultural rebirth based on the adaptation of the contemporary European, particularly French, criticism and literary experimentation – a prospect which must take into account the debated question of “interior monologue”. It then means confronting this ambition to the actual reception of major, and minor, literary works of the early twentieth century, and to their appropriation by Thessalonician writers as real authors-readers, as well as redefining their own works status now according to the readers-authors whom they wished for and whom they instituted in their writings: a basis on which the modernity of the Macedonian Days group and its most remarkable contribution to the revival of Neo-Hellenic prose essentially lies

Full textPaul Alexis (1847-1901) is mainly known as the closest friend of Zola. This is quoted as his main characteristic, almost as his unique definition. He is usually forgotten to be mentioned as also a writer who was very dedicated to a cause which had a huge significance in his life : Naturalism. This thesis tries to explore this double perspective. By studying books and newspaper articles written by this author, this work aims on the one hand, to explore his relationship with Zola, and, on the other hand, to focus on his personal designs, his deep convictions, as well as his connections with the other members of the movement. Primarily, in order to achieve this, this thesis scrutinises his personal and literary links with Zola. It shows the everyday life of a friendship which went through many challenges and changes. It analyses the striking moments which occurred during the course of their lives. It emphasises their common points of thought and tries to highlight the differences between the author of Germinal and the writer of Madam Meuriot, the last appearing to be the ultimate upholder of the naturalistic theories. Then, this project strives to precisely explain the personal ideas of this novelist, according to his theoretical views and to his works of fiction. It observes his restless involvement and the fights he led for the sake of his favourite topics such as : journalism, arts, theatre, politics... Finally, this work describes the actions Alexis carried out at the side of Zola, at the heart of the circle of Médan, but also in a more autonomous way, during major events in which he participated. This paper aims to clarify the huge issues he faced, such as the rise of naturalism or the Dreyfus affair, for example. The ultimate purpose of this PhD is to consider this character often slandered, sometimes neglected, a man who was more than a fellow traveller of Emile Zola
