Full textThis study examines the hypothesis according to which “for there to be a “story”, a novel, there needs to be an obstacle hindering the realization of [love]” (Pierre Gallais). The obstacles of the lovers’ union reoccur in love stories from medieval times, as much in the Orient as in the Occident. These obstacles merit being brought to attention. To examine them is to recall that the reading of anonymous French idyll invites us, at times, to compare it to two amorous plots: one being Persian (Varqe and Gulšāh), the other Arabic ('Urwa and 'Afrā’). The thematic affinities between these related texts do not extinguish in any circumstance the originality of each novel. It should be noted that stories are not created from fortunate love and that to love often drives one to expose himself to others, parental opposition and to society. It shows love is only intensified with separation and suffering. It attempts to emphasize the paradox upon which these novels are based: the obstacle, which at first glance appears to worry the aspiring couples and condemn their idyll, decisively proves an indispensable element of the romantic plot which serves only to celebrate the intrepidity of young lovers. It is demonstrated in these texts that none of the obstacles encountered succeed in separating the lovers. Finally, it shows how individual and collective conversions finish by conferring a civilizing dimension to the texts, “an orientalizing tendency”, indeed “a Romanesque ‘Orientalism’”

Full textIn this doctoral dissertation we analyze the relations and the possible influence that the Medieval French Epic could have exerted on the Hispanic one on the motifs and formulas levels. The study consists of two parts, preceded by an introduction and followed by a second volume of appendix. In the introductory section, some essential aspects are presented: the corpus, the status quaestionis of the French epic influence on the Cantar de mio Cid, the fundamental concepts employed and the structure of the study. In these two parts, we analyze from a comparative perspective two complementary aspects: the motifs and the formulism. In the first one, we study six motifs which deserve a particular attention: the general description of the battle, the lance attack, the blow with the sword, the narrative prayer, the appearance of the angel and the epic itinerary. These examinations are founded on two levels: the external one, in which the relation of the motif and the characters is explored; and the internal one, that deals with the motif composition and the formulaic way in which it is expressed. The second part opens with the relation between oralism and formulism. Thereafter, drawn from the examples of the Cantar de mio Cid, we analyze in detail the different kinds of formulaic expressions, taking into consideration the type of variation. In addition, we study the methods of generation of the formulas, and we also examine the diverse functions and effects of these units. The thesis continues with a quantitative exam of the formulas of the Cantar. This second part closes with a chapter devoted to the study of the Hispanic formulaic system in light of French epic. The annexes contain the verses and formulas of the six analyzed motifs, taken from the examples of the corpus; the different types of formulaic expressions of the Cantar de mio Cid; the register of all formulas and formulaic expressions of this Castilian poem; and a final index with the verses quoted both from the French and the Hispanic epic
En esta tesis de doctorado, analizamos las relaciones y la posible influencia que la épica medieval francesa pudo ejercer en la hispánica en el nivel de los motivos y las fórmulas. El estudio se compone de dos grandes bloques, precedidos de una introducción y seguidos de un segundo volumen de anexos. En el apartado introductorio, presentamos algunos aspectos esenciales: definimos el corpus, retomamos algunos puntos sobre los que se ha propuesto o desechado la influencia de las chansons de geste en el Cantar de mio Cid, definimos los conceptos fundamentales empleados y justificamos la estructura del estudio. La tesis está formada por dos grandes partes complementarias, en las que analizamos desde una perspectiva comparatista los motivos y el formulismo, respectivamente. En la primera, estudiamos seis motivos que merecen una atención especial: la descripción general de la batalla, el ataque con la lanza, el golpe con la espada, la oración narrativa, la aparición del ángel y el itinerario épico. El análisis está fundado en dos niveles: uno externo, donde exploramos la relación del motivo y de los personajes que en él participan; y otro interno, donde nos interesamos por la composición del motivo y por la actualización formular de las fases que lo componen. La segunda gran parte de la obra se abre con el examen de la relación entre el oralismo y el formulismo. A continuación, a partir de los ejemplos del Cantar de mio Cid, analizamos en detalle los diferentes tipos de expresiones formulares, teniendo en cuenta las clases de variaciones que experimentan. De igual modo, estudiamos los procedimientos de creación de fórmulas, así como las diferentes funciones y efectos del empleo de estas unidades. La tesis prosigue con un examen cuantitativo de las fórmulas del Cantar. Esta segunda gran parte se cierra con un capítulo dedicado al sistema formular de la épica hispánica a la luz de las chansons de geste francesas. Los anexos incluyen los versos y las fórmulas de los seis motivos analizados en la primera parte, siempre a partir de los ejemplos del corpus; los diferentes tipos de locuciones formulares del Cantar; el registro de la totalidad de las fórmulas y frases formulares del poema castellano; y un índice de versos citados, procedentes tanto de la épica francesa como de la hispánica

Full textThe character Merlin, was born a long time ago from Welsh chronicles. Its literary origins go back to texts from the 12th century, first in Latin, then in French, in which he becomes Arthur’s famous adviser and acquires a great reputation among readers. Today, nine centuries later, the traditional Merlin is reborn, after Romanticism has forgotten him. The hero is still making us dream. He has become the main character of many works of the current francophone cultural production. This work analyses the contemporary persistence of the literary figure of medieval Merlin through two main themes: the origins and the powers. As a first step, a table of the medieval hero’s portrait is made according to the study of a novel’s corpus showing Merlin in the Middle Ages. Then, based on this table, whose structure builds the study plan, the hero’s contemporary persistence is analysed in detail through a corpus composed of elements from literature, cinema, theatre, comic books and Internet. The study of the origins (which includes the themes of the conception and the Woodwose or wildman’s tradition) shows mostly a modification of Merlin’s creator status, the devil, which is rationalized, paganised or deleted. This change is made to give importance to the Woodwose’s tradition, which already existed in the Middle Ages, but has become dominant in contemporary corpus. A detailed analysis of the Christian depreciation explains these narratological changes, which also affects the theme of powers (which includes the vision, the control over time and the control over space). In addition to their de-Christianization, the powers are considerably modernized thanks to the techniques of the various media. Consequently, they are demystified, which allows a finer identification with the reader-viewer. Thus, Merlin has become reachable, he does not scare any more like in the Middle Ages where his diabolical origin made him doubtful. He appears as a spokesman of a return to nature, as he had already been in the early medieval texts before his message was lost under the weight of the Christian domination. But today more than ever, the world needs examples, models to respect and love nature, whose future seems threatened. Merlin is the ideal messenger of a " naturist " conception of life and world. The contemporary writers understand this. Through his connection to the medieval world and his revisited portrait by the contemporary cultural production, Merlin attracts us, he makes us dream while reminding us of our own being through identification with this extraordinary character
Die Figur Merlin wurde vor langer Zeit aus walisischen Chroniken geboren. Seine literarischen Ursprünge stammen aus Texten des 12. Jahrhunderts die zuerst auf Lateinisch und danach auf Französisch waren. In diesen Texten ist der grossartige Berater von Arthur und erreicht dadurch Berühmtheit unter den Lesern. Neun Jahrhunderte später ist der traditionelle Merlin Wiedergeboren, nachdem er in der Romantik in Vergessenheit geriet. Der Held macht immer noch träumen und ist die Hauptfigur in etlichen Werken der zeitgenossischen frankophonen kulturellen Produktion. Diese Arbeit analysiert die zeitgenössischen Überbleibsel der mittelalterlichen Figur Merlin aus zwei Gesichtspunkten: der Herkunft und der Zauberkraft. Als erstes wurde eine Tabelle erstellt in der das Porträt des mittelalterlichen Helden, aufgrund von verschiedenen Werken, wo die mittelalterliche Figur Merlin erscheint, gezeigt wird. Diese Tabelle und seine Struktur sind die Grundlage unsere Studie. Die zeitgenössischen Remanenzen der literarischen mittelalterlichen Charakteristiken des Helden sind danach in der frankophonen kulturellen Produktion (Literatur, Film, Theater, Comics oder Internet) analysiert. Die Studie der Ursprünge (welche die Themen der Konzeption und der Tradition des wilden Mannes umfasst) zeigt hauptsächlich eine Änderung des Status des mittelalterlichen Vaters von Merlin (der Teufel), welcher rationalisiert, paganisiert und teilweise sogar gestrichen wird. Diese Änderung erfolgt zugunsten einer hervorgehobenen Darstellung der Tradition des wilden Mannes. Diese Tradition, die während des Mittelalters bereits erschien, steht im Vordergrund der zeitgenössischen Korpus. Eine detaillierte Analyse der Abwertung des Christentums erklärt die narratologischen Umbrüche, die auch den Bereich der Zauberkräfte betreffen (umfasst die Klarsicht, die Kontrolle über Zeit und Raum). Ausserdem wurden die Zauberkräfte dank den neuen Medien beträchtlich modernisiert und demystifiziert, was eine effiziente Identifizierung mit dem Leser-Zuschauer erlaubt Durch diese Entwicklung wird Merlin erreichbarer, macht keine Angst mehr im Gegensatz zum Mittelalter, wo ihn seine teuflischen Züge zweifelhaft machten. Er erscheint als Sprecher für eine Rückkehr zur Natur, wie das bereits in den ersten mittelalterlichen Texten der Fall war, bevor seine Botschaft unter der christlichen Herrschaft verloren ging. Heute, mehr denn je, braucht die Welt Beispiele, Modelle hinsichtlich Respekt und Liebe zur Natur deren Zukunft bedroht zu sein scheint. Merlin ist daher der ideale Kurier einer "naturistischen" Konzeption des Lebens und der Welt, was die zeitgenössischen Autoren deutlich verstanden haben. Durch seine Verbindung zur mittelalterlichen Welt sowie seiner Wiederauferstehung durch die zeitgenössischen kulturellen Produktionen, zieht er uns an und lässt uns träumen indem er uns an uns selber erinnert durch die Identifizierung mit dieser aussergewöhnlichen Persönlichkeit

Full textPresenting himself as an eyewitness of the Trojan war, Dares Phrygius is the reference historian of the Latin Middle Ages when it comes to the war of Troy. In the 13th century, his work, De Excidio Troiæ, wastranslated in many vernacular languages, amongst them French, Welsh and Norse (i.e. Icelandic). But the story of Dares seldom comes alone: it is often associated with the story of Romans or even of Bretons (i.e. Welsh), as they thought themselves then to be of Trojan ascent. In this study, I analyze the textual strategies at work in order to legitimize the transfer of Dares’s story towards vernacular languages and to appropriate this story by a new, unlatinized, textual community. This work presents itself as a compared study of these three corpuses. After a presentation of the context in which they were written and their manuscripts comes an analysis of the sources and their uses by the translators. After analyzing the compilations, I turn towards internal textual strategies, that is the treatment of the story of Dares, the modifications, the explanation of references, the role of the narrator and how history was conceived therefore in these works. In this study, I endeavor to show that appropriating the Trojan matter, even if the process is never made explicit in the texts, came from a specific interest for the story of Dares and more generally for the history of Troy

Full textThe search for types, structures and ideologies in tales and stories raises a twin problem, on the one hand of form and of visible appearance, and on the one other of concealed, inner essence. The former is a matter of the breakdown of the tales and stories into their constituent units, involving the manipulation of the narrative units, episodes and storylines. Although comparative study reveals some similarities between the Renard tales and the african narratives, it highlights a number of culturally specific features. Above all, the renart and the african tales are socialised. Whether western european or african, the story teller is less of a philosopher than an entertainer. Yet the story telling technique is always based on social experience. The narrative discourse reflects the problems of the social environment of the author. In the "Roman de Renart", feudal ideology is observable as a kind of derision of individuals and values, whereas in the african tales there is a zest for life, and interest in community and hierarchical values, the hierarchy of beings and things. Full textFor a few years, several researchers have undertaken to study the rites, beliefs and narratives that many cultures developed about the bear, for centuries and in many places in the world, wherever mankind was confronted with this animal. The comparison between different traditions reveals the existence of a mythological set, very coherent and concerning a stupefying space. Tidy relies may be found in many literary works, particularly in epic works. In Europe, the medieval Romance epic (the chansons de geste) shows, in the light of the mythological analysis, the importance of this unexpected substratum. The name of several heroes, their exploits, the families or the groups they belong to, and even the spaces they stride over, find a justification, an explanation, in the mythical bear' s every move

Full textThis work is meant to explore the literary effects of the massive presence of female characters in the medieval epic, despite the paradox it represents, given that these poems deal mainly with war and seem to be primarily concerned with masculinity. The research focuses on three major epics from France, Byzantium and Persia, composed between the 11th and the 13th century. The study of female characters from a comparative point of view emphasizes their impact on the narrative, contrasts their submissiveness with their independance from their male counterparts, and sheds light upon the misogynistic stereotypes as well as the positive appreciations among their literary representations. Since the epic genre has been recently redefined as the ideal locus for the confronting of antithetic social values through the use of narratological tools, rather than conceptual, we would like to show that this can also apply to gender norms. Because their agency becomes problematic as soon as it challenges that of men, women in epics bring on a constant inquiry of those norms. Be it indirect or straightforward, this latent tendency gives rise to a specifically feminine transgression that, when leading to heroism, allows to re-read those works as going against essentialist prejudices

Full textReligious drama, which developed into a mass medium in European cities between the 14th and the 16th century, has always been a challenge for comparative research. Despite the many similarities between plays in different linguistic areas, no direct textual relationship between them could be proven. This dissertation aims to open up new perspectives for comparative research by changing the methodological approach. In order to identify the persuasion strategies of religious drama, this work considers the theatrical semiotic repertoire, consisting of language, image, sound (music and noise) and gesture. Although historical representations are essentially inaccessible to analysis, the ‘imagined representation,’ inscribed as potentiality in the signs transmitted by the manuscripts, can be reconstructed. Using methods mainly from textual linguistics, the study describes some persuasion strategies present in a representative selection of German and French Passion plays and eschatological plays. It identifies argumentative places (topoi) that structure the plays. A chapter is devoted to a topos, which recasts a certain subject in a threatening light. The plays use this in order to underline the relevance and urgency of theatrical representation. The diachronic comparison shows how defamation strategies, used in the 14th and 15th centuries to characterize and demonize the Jews as a collective, were applied to Protestants in the 16th century. Another chapter examines how the plays use authority as a topos to legitimize themselves. The analysis of the different evocation techniques makes it possible not only to describe the rhetorical and performative use of authorities, but also to highlight distinct concepts of authority. Finally, the last part shows how theatre builds and perpetuates stereotypes that affect the audience in both rational and emotional ways, leading to processes of inclusion and exclusion
