The PhD thesis examines the way the fictitious writer is represented in interwar popular (middlebrow) literature (United Kingdom, Ireland). The analysis first tackles the characterisation of the fictitious writer, particularly the way the public image of highbrow and middlebrow writers is depicted in the middlebrow novel ; additionally to this, it studies the way the fictitious writer himself characterises the other characters he encounters, turning them into types. It traces how the indiscreet behaviour of fictitious writers within the plot turns out to be a professional quirk, in the sense that they still behave like writers while they are part of a domestic-related plot focusing on abidance by the rules of propriety. It is one of the aspects taken by the recurring phenomenon, within the primary corpus, according to which the domestic-related plot actually relies upon a metafictional subtext. Finally, the thesis aims at highlighting the recurring dramatisation, within the middlebrow novel, of the authorship of non-writing secondary characters ; it consists in showing that some of the secondary characters met by the fictitious writers are implicitly equated to professional writers, because what seems to be their trivial activities, belonging to the domestic realm, turn out to be metaphors of writing. The uncovering of this phenomenon relies on a detailed analysis of the texts, in an attempt to move beyond the subject of the plot in order to focus on the metafictional metaphorical meshing of the middlebrow novel

In 1960, the publication of Matin des magiciens, written by Louis Pauwels and Jacques Bergier, marks the beginning of a literary phenomenon commonly known as “réalisme fantastique”. First fuelled by the review Planète then by numerous independant authors such as Robert Charroux, the réalisme fantastique enjoys great success in France, until the late 70’s.This thesis aims at defining réalisme fantastique and determining the reasons behind its success then sudden disappearance. Using Gérard Noiriel’s socio-historical methodology, we suggest an approach that falls at once within cultural and religious history and the sociology of religions, sciences and literature. If the development of réalisme fantastique may be understood using Pierre Bourdieu’s literary field theory, it can also be construed as a way of reshaping religion, which is a distinctive feature of post-war decades. Presenting a particular form of esotericism called “mainstream esotericism”, the réalisme fantastique constitutes a way of thinking lying between the cultic milieu, New Age and occulture.Because of this unusual status, we propose to see the réalisme fantastique as a cultural paradigm that offers an alternative to the prevailing model, governed by science. This paradigm develops its very own knowledge system and values by blending esotericism, religion and science. Finally, this study focuses on the impact of secularization on esotericism. By establishing a link with counter-culture, we seek to demonstrate how the esoteric rhetoric managed to develop itself within French culture, to the point of becoming nowadays an ‘ordinary’ element

This thesis entitled The literary canon and the advent of mass culture. The book series "Les Grands Écrivains Français" (1887-1913) examines the state of the literary canon in the late nineteeth century and early twenthieth century, when French society sees the advent of mas culture. To do this, we have chosen as the subject a series of monographs published by Hachette, under the coordination of the historian and diplomat Jean Jules Jusserand. Trying to answer at the same time a question of content (what is the literary canon promoted by this collection ?) and a question of method (how to reach a collection ?), our work is divided into several parts (a brief presentation of the collection and an assessment of its success and of its reception, an intellectual history of Jusserand as series editor, its "author", an examination of the physical characteristics of the series and of the target audience "the common reader", who began to assert itself as representative of the mass culture, a detailed presentation of volumes in the collection according to their distribution by "literary centuries"). The fifth part is trying to make the point of this analysis, seeking to answer key questions such as the problem of "great writer" and the problem of "literature" as elaborated by Jusserand collection. In this case, one could argue that the concept of writer has a greater extension than usual, similar to a "man of letters" and litterature is seen as a unifying discourse, wich must unite the community around the national idea. The last part tries to put into perspective the French series, comparing in to two other similar book series (British and American)

In the current project, we analyzed the process through which contemporary stars of architecture and urban planning legitimize their actions on the city. In particular, we investigated their different uses of literature and the different functions they play in their public speeches. Indeed, literary references and stylistics characteristics are called up to stage their productions and their personality, and therefore to highlight their work and charm the audience. This thesis helps understanding how these stars build their public image, meeting the requirements of an elite culture and referring to widely shared references. Literacy references and stylistics characteristics are used at some strategic moments during public speeches. They provide the stars of architecture and urban planning with the opportunity to emphasize on their position regarding architecture and city planning debates and with the opportunity to stage their way of thinking and acting. The examination of how the stars of architecture and urban planning use literature also helps understanding how those protagonists claim to hold a personal and sensitive approach while showing a modus operandi strongly worried by social practices. This current study sheds light on the various strategies of those urban makers. It demonstrates how those strategies are permanently fluctuating between the assertion of a personal distinction and the demonstration of compliance with the others protagonists values. Because it examines architecture and city productions through the outlook of cultural practices, the current work is at the interface of the sociology of art, professions, urban studies, and geography of literature
