Abstract:
The article is a publication of the Grave 1 excavated in the necropolis of Luchistoe-2, which is so far the only known archaeological site in Southern Crimea with burial structures of the Early Roman period. The article includes suggestions regarding the scale and date of the necropolis, as well as the funerary rite, costume and cultural connections of the society using the burial-ground. It was established that the published grave contained the burial of a woman of high social status (probably a priestess) dated from the late-1st or early-2nd century ad. Analysis of the archaeological material in conjunction with information about the location of the necropolis and data from epigraphic documents and ancient litterary tradition, leads to the conclusion that the burial-ground was located in ‘Taurica’ – the territory between the Greek polis of Chersonesos and the Bosporan kingdom. It was used by the population, which was designated in the written sources as Scytho-Taurians (Plin. nh., iv, 85-86; Arr. ppe. 30). These peoples were bearers of the so-called Late Scythian archaeological culture and belonged to the sphere of the Bosporan state’s cultural influence. This information can be used in further reconstructions of the ethno-political situation in the Crimea in Roman times.

Abstract This study reviews Nicasius Ellebodius’s Pozsony (today: Bratislava) period (1571–77) from a biographical and intellectual historical perspective. Ellebodius (1535–1577) was a Flemish philologist of vast erudition, one of the finest Graecists of his day. His biography and character are much less discussed in scholarship than his works, although his letters provide us with invaluable information about his life, as well as about the participation of the academic elite of 16th-century Hungary in the international res publica litteraria. The article will revisit the problem of how far he could realize the otium litterarum that he yearned for so much, and what challenges he had to face in his everyday life in Pozsony.

U radu se donose rezultati istraživanja latinskih povijesnojezičnih izvora koji otkrivaju što su o jeziku i pismu Hrvata znali europski renesansni humanisti prije nego što su prvi pokušaji kodifikacije hrvatskoga jezika u povijesnome i ideološkome kontekstu katoličke obnove osigurali njegovo službeno uključivanje u jezični zemljovid Europe. Šesnaestostoljetna je res publica litteraria, zahvaljujući intenzivnim humanističkim kontaktima i vezama, između ostalih tema omogućila i širenje ideje humanističkoga ilirizma koji je uključivao i pitanje jezika slavenskih naroda, pa tako i hrvatskoga. Sudionici te ranonovovjekovne zajednice intelektualaca razmjenjivali su, i u svojim raspravama diljem Europe objavljivali, podatke o hrvatskome jeziku i pismu. Takve su bilješke potvrđene u djelima francuskoga lingvista Guillauma Postela (Linguarum duodecim characteribus differentium alphabetum, 1538., Pariz) te švicarskih filologa Theodora Bibliandera (De ratione communi omnium linguarum et litterarum commentarius, 1548., Zürich) i Conrada Gesnera (Mithridates sive de differentiis linguarum tum veterum tum quae hodie apud diversas nationes in toto orbe terrarum in usu sunt, 1555., Zürich). U humanističkim je početcima kontrastivne lingvistike sudjelovao i jedan hrvatski latinist. Riječ je o Bartolu Đurđeviću i njegovu djelu o nevoljama kršćanskih zarobljenika pod turskom vlašću (De afflictione tam captivorum quam etiam sub Turcae tributo viventium Christianorum, 1544., Antverpen). Đurđević je prikazao razlike između hrvatskoga i turskoga jezika, objavio mali hrvatsko-latinski rječnik i tekst Očenaša, koji je kao ogledni tekst ilirskoga jezika citiran u spomenutome Biblianderovu i Gesnerovu repertoriju svjetskih jezika.

Abstract:
The review does not make the case that the recent republication of George Littera’s work is relevant for todays film criticism. On the contrary, it suggests that contemporary film criticism might not stand very well in the light of Littera’s work. In particular, it shows how his writing is concerned with the idea of value and contradictions, which is less investigated in new work concerned with subjects of history such as the working class. First, it details Littera’s assessment of Soviet avant-garde cinema. Second, it compares his book with the work of one of his UNATC collegues such as Florian Potra. Finally, it briefly investigates a mode of production and essay writing which has disappeared as technique.

In his Res Gestae, the historian Ammianus Marcellinus describes the Egyptian city of Thebes and the obelisks that can be found there. There is an unusual passage in which he describes hieroglyphic writings. He goes on to show, through two examples, how hieroglyphs might seem bizarre, but in fact contain their own logic which can be explained (Amm. Marc. 17.4.10–11, translation mine): non enim ut nunc litterarum numerus praestitutus et facilis exprimit quicquid humana mens concipere potest, ita prisci quoque scriptitarunt Aegyptii, sed singulae litterae singulis nominibus seruiebant et uerbis; non numquam significabant integros sensus. cuius rei scientiam his inseram duobus exemplis. per uulturem naturae uocabulum pandunt, quia mares nullos posse inter has alites inueniri rationes memorant physicae, perque speciem apis mella conficientis indicant regem moderatori cum iucunditate aculeos quoque innasci debere his signis ostendentes. et similia plurima.For the ancient Egyptians did not write as nowadays, when a prescribed and easy series of letters expresses whatever the human mind can imagine; but individual characters served as individual nouns and verbs; and sometimes they signified whole ideas. I will show the knowledge of this with these two examples. They represent the word for ‘nature’ by a vulture, because no males can be found among these birds, as natural history records; and by the figure of the bee making honey they indicate ‘a king’, showing by these signs that in a ruler stings also ought to arise from sweetness. And there are many similar instances.

The famous eastern tour of inspection undertaken by Scipio Aemilianus, L. Metellus Calvus and Sp. Mummius is now generally dated 140/39 b.c., where Diodorus seems to put it. The accepted view, however, involves discounting an explicit statement by Cicero. It also presents historical difficulties. In 140 b.c. there was no need for such a high-powered Roman initiative, and scholars can discover only very minor political results. Sherwin-White indeed criticised the envoys severely, especially Scipio; they were culpably blind to the new menace of Parthia, which was steadily dismembering the Seleucid Empire east of the Euphrates. This is fair criticism only on the 140/39 b.c. dating. Did Scipio and his colleagues fail to see what is patent to us today? It is time to reexamine rigorously the underlying assumption.In Acad. prior. 2.5 Cicero defends a Roman noble's love of Greek learning in the following terms:ego autem cum Graecas litteras M. Catonem in senectute didicisse acceperim, P. autem Africani historiae loquantur in legatione illa nobili, quam ante censuram obiit, Panaetium unum omnino comitem fuisse, nec litterarum Graecarum nee philosophiae iam ullum auctorem requiro.The date of the embassy must be 144/3 b.c., if we follow the logic of this passage. Scipio was censor with L. Mummius in 142/1 b.c. and their public quarrel was hardly less notable than the embassy, in which L. Mummius' brother shared. Another Ciceronian passage – written some six years earlier – seems to contradict the dating offered in 45 b.c. In de republica 6.11 the elder Africanus prophesies his grandson's future greatness in the famous dream:

Abstract:
This article examines the functions of feminism in the critical reception of Kristina Sandberg’s Maj-Trilogy, published 2010-2014. Detailing the evaluative patterns of reviews, it is shown that critics’ increased attention to feminist politics and women’s history in the novels was tied to a de-aestheticizing rhetoric, exemplifying gender hierarchies on the literary field. However, the trilogy’s critical and commercial success is also shown to be based on conception of the women’s cause and feminist writing traditions. Connecting these points, the article argues that a principal function of feminism on the contemporary Swedish book market is to make varying evaluative principles visible, and to bridge the boundaries of cultural, political and social fields.

Abstract:
The article deals with the emergence, development and blooming of the letter genre in European cultural history until the middle of the 20th century. The oldest letters that have survived to our time date from the 3rd-2nd centuries BC and are written in cuneiform. The first major heyday of the literary genre was in the time of ancient Rome, when both politicians and philosophers exchanged letters, but also several writers used the letter form in their works. The so-called canon of letter writing was formed in the Middle Ages, when the art of letter writing began to be taught at the universities. In the 17th century, letter writing manuals and private letters began to be published in books, and in the 18th century it was already very common. The growing popularity of communication by letters is also shown by the fact that in the middle of the 18th century, when English writer Samuel Richardson published three novels in the form of letters, the epistolary novel was born. In the epistolary novels, for the first time the world of feelings and thoughts of the characters was under observation. At the end of the 19th century, communication by letters increased drastically due to the wider spread of literacy throughout Europe. The writing of letters intensified during the First and Second World Wars, which is considered the last major blooming of the letter genre. This fact is also confirmed by studies on the development of the written communication tradition in Estonia. The article also provides a brief overview about the research and publication of private correspondences in Estonia. In the middle of the 20th century, the Estonian Literary Museum began to systematically deal with the autobiographical heritage (incl. letters) of those persons who had a prominent position in cultural history. In 1984, the serial publication Litteraria: eesti kirjandusloo allikmaterjale (Litteraria: Estonian Literary History Source Materials; since 2005 Litteraria: Estonian Cultural History Source Materials) was founded with the aim of making correspondences, but also various biographical notes, photographs, etc., available to the public. Litteraria has never been published regularly; nevertheless, by 2023 the series had published already twenty-eight issues, which are now also available online (https://www.kirmus.ee/et/teadus/e-litteraria). In 1998, Tuna: Ajalookultuuri ajakiri (The Past: Journal of Historical Culture) came out on the landscape of social science and humanities journals. The new journal included the rubric “Estonian Cultural History Archives”, which allowed the researchers to regularly publish archival sources with commentary four times a year. Over the years, several voluminous text-critical publications of correspondences have been published in parallel with the issues of Litteraria and Tuna, for example, “Akadeemia kirjades” (“Academy in letters”, Olesk 1997), “Minu lamp põleb” (“My lamp is on”, Annuk & Metste 2015), and “Kallid krantsid: Kirjad vangilaagritest ja asumiselt Siberis 1946–1954” (“Dear friends: Letters from prison camps and deportation sites in Siberia 1946–1954”, Kross 2021). The published correspondences have a different historical background, but the common feature of all the authors of the letters is their close connection with Estonian literature. Several historians, literary scholars, cultural historians, folklorists, and philosophers have used private correspondences as source material for their in-depth studies. The analysis of scientific articles of the last decades shows that letters are useful primarily as a source of information that helps to open the hidden aspects of some cultural-historical phenomenon or historical event, for example, the world wars. In addition, different aspects of epistolary practices are also analysed, such as the peculiarities of means of expression, communicativeness or intersubjectivity of letters, etc. Until the turn of the century, prominent creative figures in Estonian cultural history dominated among the authors of the letters used in the studies. In recent decades, a new trend has emerged which shows that researchers have begun to pay more attention to, for example, the love letters and war letters of ordinary people, as well as letters in which the writer shares with the addressee various information about joys and worries of everyday life.

Abstract:
The Second Vatican Council declared the Cons titution on the Sacred Liturgy (Lat.: Sacrosanctum Consilium”) in 1963. It started the liturgical renewal of the Church. The Second Vatican Council farsaw that during the process of liturgical renewal, a reform of the interior of church buildings would be inevitable. In order to prevent the change of the heritage of religious art and history it promulgated sound and extensive articles regarding the building of new churches and the protection of heritage of art and history preserved in ancient churches (SC 44-46; 121-129). In 1971 “Congregatio pro Clericis” issued “Litterae circulates” for chairmen of national conferences of bishops which supplemented articles of “Sacrosanctum Consilium” paying particular attention to the preservation, registration and ivaluation of treasures of art. The Code of Canon Law newly published in 1983 reiterates laws issued in previous codes which administrate the building of new churches, their ornamenting and articles about the preservation of the ancient historical heritage (can. 821; can. 1216; can. 12922; can. 1317; can 13712). Finally, the Constitution “Pastor bonus” promulgated by Pope John Paul II which reorganized the Roman Curia, established at Congregatio pro Clericis Pontifical Commision for preservation of art and history. This Commission is charged with consulting and assisting local Churches in looking after the cultural heritage. It is obvious that we do have wide and exhaustive documents of the Church which regulate the heritage of art and history.

Abstract:
The article discusses the teaching of a number of subjects of classical studies - Latin and ancient Greek, ancient history and literature - by professors of the Demidov Higher Sciences School. The attention of P. G. Demidov to humanitarian subjects in the Athenaeum founded by him is noted (the official Latin name of the school was Athenaeum litterarum Demidowianum Jaroslaviense), as well as his personal invitations of classical philologists for teaching. The author connects the formation of P. G. Demidov’s interest to classical languages and to the sciences in general with his studies in Revel with Professor A. F. Sigismundi, about whom the article provides biographical information. The activity in Yaroslavl of classical philologists I. E. Sreznevsky, F. Schmidt and M. O. Khanenko, as well as A. F. Klimenko and S. A. Vilinsky is characterized. The content of speeches by S A. Vilinsky about the history and «successes of enlightenment» of the three ancient peoples - the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans is analyzed. It is concluded that classical studies at the Demidov School were originally an essential and very significant part of the formation of higher education in Yaroslavl.

Abstract:
Summary For a long time, and well beyond the publication of John Wilkins’s Essay Towards a Real Character (1668), a latent tension characterised the orthographic tradition. It was caused by two incompatible principles whose problematic relationship had never been addressed. One is the idea of the logical, chronological and semiotic primacy of speech over writing, or of sound over character, a principle which lives on in modern linguistics. The other is the doctrine of an abstract unity of sound/potestas and character/figura in the letter/littera, an axiom that appears to have been abandoned only with the emancipation of modern phonetics from its former orthographic frame of reference. With the advent of the real-character movement in the 17th century, a way was suddenly opened up for the problematic issue to be discussed and resolved. Since a real, i.e., non-sound-related, character implied at least a non-priority of speech over writing — if not a priority of writing —, the first principle could be reformulated so as to be made consonant with the idea of an abstract littera. This paper tries to bring out Wilkins’s sophisticated discussion of the littera, his attempt to localise the abstract unity of sound and character in the configuration of the articulatory organs, as well as the utilisation of his littera concept for his design of a real character of sounds. In a parallel line of argument, it is claimed that Wilkins’s orthography, or doctrine of letters, forms the conceptual equivalent to his metaphysics, or science of things. More than that, the two disciplines are so interlocked that things and letters can be seen to converge in letter-things, or thing-letters.

The paper deals with the personality of Cassiodorus, philosopher, theologian, statesman of the 6th century. Cassiodorus’ works reflect the changes in his worldview, his interests in different periods of his life. The focus of the study is the most famous work of the Italian philosopher “Institutiones divinarum et saecularium litterarum”. In this work he formulated his views on school education and the spiritual enlightenment of his fellow citizens. Cassiodorus attaches particular importance to reading as the only reliable way to gain knowledge. In the “Instructiones” he consistently holds the idea that the program of the Christian school needs a synthesis of theology and worldly sciences. Without losing interest in history as a science, in his mature years Cassiodorus strives to see the unity of human history as a process that is under the influence of the will of God.

O século XIX constitui-se como um marco na história da imprensa feminina portuguesa. Datam deste período as primeiras colaborações femininas em periódicos, assim como a criação dos primeiros jornais destinados e dirigidos por mulheres, como é o caso de A Assembléa Litteraria e de A Voz Feminina, que se constituem como dois periódicos pioneiros na luta pela causa feminina. Neste sentido, no presente artigo é nosso objetivo analisar as vozes das mulheres presentes na imprensa oitocentista, especificamente nos jornais anteriormente mencionados, que se constituem como uma fonte inestimável de informação acerca da mentalidade da época. Destacaremos as ideias destas mulheres em favor do seu sexo e do acesso a direitos fundamentais, como a instrução, chave para a emancipação intelectual do sexo feminino. Para levar a cabo esta investigação, foram consultadas fontes bibliográficas e hemerográficas.

The Saga of Elijah and Elisha (1 Kgs 16:29 – 2 Kgs 13:25) deals with the history of the cult of Ba’al in Biblical Israel. Its nucleus is a mosaic of 35 episodes containing several versions of the biographies of Elijah and Elisha who are atypical Old Testament prophets belonging to a select circle of “men of God”. Their saga supplements and comments on the greater story of Biblical Israel, and it is argued that there is an affinity between them and the shamans known in particular from the Arctic world and the aboriginal peoples of the Americas. Definitions of prophets and shamans are briefly discussed, and the kind of shamanism associated with Elijah and Elisha is described and named literary shamanism.

Riassunto Il patronato letterario era un sistema di relazioni sociali diffuso nell’Italia Ostrogota, come attestano le opere di Ennodio, Boezio, Cassiodoro e Arator. Ennodio cercò a lungo un dives patronus che fosse in grado di dare fama alle sue opere, mentre Boezio, grazie al sostegno di Simmaco, ottenne in breve tempo grande notorietà, tanto che Teoderico cercò di farlo entrare a corte. Cassiodoro è l’esempio più noto del patronato teodericiano, mentre Arator rivela che anche i membri del clero furono importanti mecenati. Questi autori permettono di comprendere i motivi che spinsero i letterati a cercare un patrono e le principali caratteristiche del patronato senatorio, regio ed ecclesiastico, oltre a testimoniare l’importanza degli studia litterarum nell’Italia tardoantica e le strategie di legittimazione adottate dai sovrani ostrogoti.

A tanulmány Nicasius Ellebodius életének utolsó, pozsonyi időszakát (1571–1577) dolgozza fel, bepillantást nyújtva a flamand humanista izgalmas személyiségébe és sokoldalú tevékenységébe. Ellebodius, aki a francia-flandriai Casselben született 1535-ben, és Leuvenben, Rómában, illetve Padovában tanult, a XVI. századi Európa egyik legjobb klasszikus filológusává vált. Radéczy István püspök és helytartó patronáltjaként élete utolsó időszakát Pozsonyban töltötte. Számos klasszikus görög – főleg aristotelési – mű redakcióján, latin parafrázisán dolgozott. Míg nagyobb filológiai teljesítményeit már értékelte a nemzetközi szakirodalom, élete és személye háttérbe szorult a kutatásban. Fennmaradt levelezése viszont – melynek nagyobb része a pozsonyi időszakból való – kiváló alkalmat nyújt arra, hogy a művek mögé pillantva rálássunk személyiségére és tevékenységére. A tanulmány különösen arra a kérdésre keresi a választ, mennyire tudta megvalósítani Pozsonyban az olyannyira áhított otium litterarumot, és milyen egzisztenciális problémákkal kellett szembenéznie Magyarországon.The study revisits Nicasius Ellebodius’s life and character as can be outlined from the sources of his Bratislavan (Pozsony) period. Ellebodius, who was born in Cassel in French Flanders in 1535 and studied in Leuven, Rome and Padua, became one of sixteenth-century Europe’s best classical philologists. Patronised by Bishop István Radéczy, he spent the last period of his life basically in Bratislava. He worked on editions or paraphrases of several – primarily Aristotelian – classical Greek works. While his major philological achievements have already been assessed by international research, scholars have not delved deep into his biography. His surviving correspondence – the majority of which belongs to his Bratislavan period – provides an opportunity to look behind the works and gain insight into his activities and personality. The study focuses on the problem how far he could realise the otium litterarum that he yearned so much and what challenges he had to face in his everyday life in Hungary.

Irenaeus of Lyon uses the tale of Abraham as biblical proof for his thesis on the unity of God and of the history of salvation. In order to do this, however, he must first refute the Gnostic and Marcionite interpretations of Abraham, and so the episode of Isaac’s sacrifice (Gn 22:1–19). In Irenaeus’s exegesis of Gn 22:1–19, Abraham becomes the progenitor of the apostles and gentiles who are welcomed into the Church and an ante litteram disciple of Mt 4:22 and 16:24; he, who prophetically foresees the day of Jesus’s passion (Jn 8:56), offers his son Isaac as a sacrifice, just as God would offer his son, the incarnate Logos, as a sacrifice for the salvation of his descendants.

AbstractIn the present essay some of what have been the more influential conceptions of phonology are examined in the light of what I see as ‘intrusions’ into its domain, starting with a strand of orthographic influence. I am concerned with the extent to which various ‘phonological’ proposals might be described as ‘graphophonological’ rather than strictly phonological. This examination also reveals the interaction of the graphophonological impulse with the impact of other considerations that are not proper to synchronic phonology. Most pertinent here is the more familiarly controversial formulation as synchronic generalizations of what are substitutes for the diachronic regularities reflected in morphophonological alternations: what I call ‘anachronic’ phonology, associated, for the most part, with the conflation of morphophonology and phonology; another instance of ‘pseudo-phonology’. Scrutinized here are particularly proposals concerning sound structure associated with the classical littera, with the (‘taxonomic’) phoneme, and with the morphophoneme (or ‘systematic phoneme’). Finally, after an evaluation of an overtly graphophonological proposal, the orthographic rather than phonological value of ‘CVCV’ phonology is explored in relation to the inadequacies of the Linear B syllabary.

Cette étude est basée sur notre expérience collective d'analyse d'un texte littéraire de l’anglais vers la langue française. L'ouvrage que nous avons analysé est écrit en anglais sous le titre Omokewu et traduit en français sous le titre Étudiant. L’analyse est centrée sur l'observation des sept techniques proposées par Vinay et Dalbernet 1958 en particulier la modulation qui s'avère être l'une des meilleures parmi les techniques de traduction d'une œuvre littéraire. Quelques traducteurs ne savent pas comment et quand utiliser ces techniques de la traduction. Afin d'endiguer ce problème des erreurs de traduction causées par ces traducteurs non professionnels. Certaines théories et principes de traduction ont été examinés. La théorie de J. C Catford (Linguistic theory of translation), Katharina Reiss and Hans Vermeer (skopos theory), de Lawrence Venuti (The translator’s invisibility: A history of translation), de Mona Baker parmi d’autres ont été étudiés. Après avoir examiné les principes et théories, La concept de la modulation dans l’œuvre « Omokewu » a été dûment analysée. En réalisant cette étude, nous avons découvert que la technique de modulation est la meilleure pour la traduction de poésies, de musiques et d'éloges funèbres.

Abstract Carolus Clusius (1526–1609) is primarily known as Europe’s most famous botanist in his time, but he pursued a wide range of activitites as an eminent member of the res publica litteraria. He had manyfold relations to Hungary; Clusius-scholarship has so far focused on his friendship with the aristocrat Boldizsár Batthyány, but in Vienna he also exchanged a number of letters with the two most important Pozsony humanists in the period: Nicasius Ellebodius, the excellent Grecist, also of Low Countries origin, and Georg Purkircher, city physician of Pozsony and author of a number of humanist works. Based on archival, literary and artistic sources, Clusius’ friendship to them, their encounters, and their common fields of interest can be well demonstrated. Beyond contributing to the biographies of these three men of letters, the mapping of these relations also provide a good cross-section of knowledge transfer within Central Europe at the end of the sixteenth century.

Abstract Visible for months, the Great Comet of 1577 attracted worldwide attention, particularly among the scholars of Europe’s Respublica Litteraria, and reflections on it were not limited to the books of scientists like Brahe and Kepler; the Hungarian humanist bishop, politician, and nonprofessional astronomer Andreas Dudith (1533–1589) also published a Short Commentary, a fascinating example of the epistemological changes in scientific discourse and astronomical method that characterized the era. With his zealous advocacy of rational argumentation, insistence on the primacy of ‘the most direct causes’, and caustic criticism of superstition, Dudith was in a complex discussion with the Aristotelian tradition and the theological-astrological explanations of his day, thus helping clear the way for modern scientific thought. As his voluminous correspondence makes clear, he spent the final decades of his life trying to make a professional astronomer of himself, and though his friends in the Respublica helped guide his research, he never mastered the requisite mathematical methods, though remained a patron of science.

Its adversaries claimed that the kind of animal slaughtering that makes the animal meat kosher and halal, causes extra suffering to animals and therefore should be banned. However, the postulate of banning ritual slaughter in Poland is not new and it goes back to the pre-war period. In the Studia Litteraria et Historica’s interview Konstanty Gebert talks about the history of Polish debate on the ritual slaughter, its anti-Semitic applications and about not an­ti-Semitic arguments risen in the discussion. He describes legal solutions for the ritual slaughter in other countries and addresses the issue of animal killing as a moral problem in Judaism. He also discusses the contemporary debate on the ritual slaughter: is it really in the name of the animal rights? Kilkanaście sekund.
