Full textThe aim of this thesis is the study of the influence of the out-of-phase on life duration in multiaxial low cycle fatigue of a magnésium-lithium alloy. In first chapter, we expose the state of the art of multiaxial low cycle fatigue of a magnesium-lithium alloy and the different criterion of life prediction existing in this domain. The second chapter will be devoted to the experimental study. In the third chapter, we will present a discussion of experimental results. In the fourth chapter, a metallographic study of the material we have used, we clear us and then give us a physical explication to the differents results we met. We will present in the five chapter, lot models of fatigue prediction of material in multiaxial low cycle fatigue in phase and out-of-phase. At last, a general conclusion will make a balance sheet of this memory

Full textThe optimization of machining sequences is not easy because it suffers from two major shortcomings. The first focuses on the adaptability of existing ranges to current production facilities and their evolution over the years to respond to technological developments. The second point concerns the lack of consideration in the mechanical behavior of the part during the development of machining sequence. This thesis addresses these in relation to the FUI OFELIA project. At first, they study the influence of the machining parameters on the deformation of the workpiece. The aim is to predict the mechanical behavior of the part to identify recommendations with minimal distortion. The second issue deals with multi-criteria evaluation of manufacturing ranges. The criteria take into account are the deformation of the workpiece, productivity through a quick estimate of machining time and recyclability of chips produced during machining. On the other hand, we propose a geometric model of the intermediate states of the workpiece during machining in order to both assess the manufacturing recommendations and to drive the simulation calculations of the deformation of the workpiece during machining

Full textWith the aim of reducing aircraft weight, a friction stir welded Al-Cu-Li alloy (2198-T8) is considered by aircraft manufacturers for its use in fuselage or lower wing skin applications. The purpose of this study is to assess the fatigue behaviour of friction stir welds and the influence of some weld defects on fatigue properties for a target lifetime of 105 cycles. Base material, sound welds (produced via welding in one sheet), welds bearing a joint line remnant (due to the native oxide layer present on butt surfaces before welding), a kissing bond (due to a lack of tool plunge depth), and welds with an initial gap between the two butt surfaces, were tested. For the targeted lifetime, cross-weld specimens were plastically deformed during the first half of the first cycle. During cross-weld tensile tests, macroscopic properties were not altered by weld defects, although kissing bond and GAP defects acted as fracture initiation sites. In situ SEM tensile tests showed a threshold stress, beyond which the opening of the kissing bond is observed. The study of the tensile behaviour of the weld is enriched by a 3D finite element simulation. S-N curves showed that the joint line remnant did not generate a significant decrease in weld lifetime, whereas the kissing bond and GAP defects conducted to a decrease in the fatigue strength at 105 cycles by 17% and 28%, respectively. The study of initiation mechanisms revealed that those two defects were fatigue crack initiation sites only beyond a threshold value of stress. For higher values of stress, the fatigue crack initiation stage was shown to be reduced to the defect opening during the first half of the first cycle. The final weld fracture was studied through ductile tearing tests, revealing an evolution of defect harmfulness similar to the one found in S-N curves

Full textTin is a promising alternative to replace graphite carbon as a negative electrode material in Li-ion batteries due to its high specific theoretical mass capacity of 993 mAh.g-1. However, change in volume during lithiation leads to its mechanical degradation during the cycling, and consequently very short life of the material. To overcome this issue, the use of the intergranular space via the nanostructuration of the material combined by the addition of a carbon matrix or other inactive element vs. lithium (intermetallic alloys), which buffers drastically the volume expansion during the lithium alloying process, is employed. The aim of this work is to develop new processes for the synthesis of tin nanoparticles and tin-copper alloys in ionic liquid medium. Sn nanoparticles varying in size from 7 to 45 nm were synthesized, according to the cation-anion combination of the ionic liquid and from different metallic salts, as well as a nano-alloy compound, Cu6Sn5. The size of the nanoparticles is directly related to the nature of the anion although the cation has a privileged interaction with the metal surface of the nanoparticles. Once isolated from the ionic liquid, Sn and Cu6Sn5 nanoparticles have a core-shell architecture with a metallic or intermetallic crystalline core and an amorphous shell of tin oxides. A reversible conversion mechanism of the SnOx from the shell is highlighted for Sn@SnOx nanoparticles, with a high specific capacity of approximately 950 mAh.g-1. Sn-Cu@SnOx nano-alloys have a capacity close to the theoretical for an alloy mechanism at more than 530 mAh.g-1

Full textThe study of the graphite-lithium-calcium system leads to the formation of three novel intercalation compounds called α, ß and γ. The synthesis of these ternary phases is carried out at 350°C by immersion of a pyrographite platelet in a molten Li-Ca alloy whose composition is judiciously chosen. The presence of lithium in these compounds requires nuclear microprobe analysis in order to determine the elemental composition. The ß compound possesses a high metal quantity (C/Metal ratio near 1) especially in lithium. The γ phase contains a very small lithium amount and its chemical formula is close to CaC6. A structural study allowed to determine the a phase lattice. Along the c-axis, the intercalated sheets are five-layered according to a Li-Ca-Li-Ca-Li sequence that is close to the CaLi2 structure. 7Li NMR confirms these results. The ß compound contains thicker intercalated sheets that become seven-layered. The in-plane lattice of the γ phase corresponds to that of CaC6

Full textBatteries, in particular lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, are energy storage devices that are suitable for portable applications and support the need of using intrinsically diffuse/intermittent renewable energy sources. To increase the energy density, the use of elements, which can form alloys with lithium, is a promising approach currently investigated in order to replace the carbon intercalation materials in negative electrodes. Silicon is the most attractive element thanks to its ability to deliver more than 3500 mAh/g, corresponding to the formation of the Li3. 75Si alloy. Nevertheless, its implementation encounters the difficulty due to the significant volume change, inherent to the alloys formation (250 % for Si => Li3. 75Si). This further leads to a loss of electric percolation and electrode cohesion. Among the various approaches proposed to limit these effects, the most promising one is to combine the optimization of the electrode processing and the selection of suitable polymer binders. For this purpose, salts of CMC (CarboxyMethylCellulose) are very promising as they can provide high capacities and good retention. However, it is essential to understand both the binder-active material interactions and the role of the polymer chains conformation. The synthesis of different CMC (enriched or not with 13C) and other derived polymers, coupled with various characterization techniques (NMR, infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis, complex impedance spectroscopy, imaging) and electrode constructions either by evaporation or by solidification-sublimation allowed to establish relations between a few macroscopic characteristics of composites Si-carbon-polymer (porosity,…), a few molecular characteristics (conformation of the polymer, the interaction polymer-particles,…) and the electrochemical performance. The electrochemical degradation of the electrolyte as well as its macroscopic behaviour upon cycling were also investigated. Owing to a better understanding of the electrode mechanisms, we successfully prepared new composites having exceptional electrochemical performances (i. E. Capacity higher than 3000 mAh/g during more than 100 cycles with a columbic efficiency of 99. 9 %). This pioneering work opens new prospects that may be relevant to other metals (e. G. Sn, Ge, etc. ) and polymers

Full textWith a theoretical capacity of 3579 mAh. G-1 (Li15Si4), silicon is considered to be a promising material for negative electrodes in lithium-ion batteries. While research for optimizing the formulation of siliconbased electrodes is widespread, this PhD thesis provides an original approach by focusing on the characterization of the storage and extraction of lithium in silicon. In order to observe these phenomena at a nanoscale, the use of an electron energy-loss spectrometer (EELS) coupled with a transition electron microscope (TEM) proved to be particularly suitable. The implementation of this technique however required the prior creation of a database. Obtained from crystallized alloys of known compositions, this database led us to establish a relationship between the composition of LixSi alloys and their plasmon energy positions measured by EELS. The application of this database to the local-composition analysis of silicon-based electrodes revealed a two-phase Si/Li2,9 system during the first storage of lithium. Considering that, to date, few electrochemical research papers have been published on crystallized LixSi alloys, the electrochemical cycling behavior of these alloys was studied. The results revealed not only the possibility to use these alloys as a source of lithium, but also secondary reactions between carbon, the crystallized alloy and the electrolyte

Full textIn service where climatic conditions vary, aircraft are constantly confronted to fluctuating loads that could damage the structure by fatigue crack growth (FCG). Also, as the weight savings of aircraft structures become a major environmental an economic challenge that aircraft manufacturers are required to meet, the use of light alloy combined with superior mechanical properties is required to meet this problematic. Among these alloys, the 2099-T83 aluminum lithium alloy was selected for use in the latest generation of aircrafts. The overall objective of this thesis was to study the fatigue crack growth (FCG) behavior of aluminum- lithium 2099 - T83, taking into account the material processing history that depends on the extrusion aspect ratio (AR). In this regard, two profiles were investigated (an integrally stiffened panel and a cylindrical profile) from which metallurgical parameters (microstructure: the grain structure, the second phase particles/precipitates and crystallographic texture) of the alloy were first analyzed. In the integrally stiffened panel, fatigue crack growth tests were conducted in different environments [23°C with ~ 50% relative humidity (RH) and PH20 = 1.5 kPa; 23°C with ~ 0% RH and PH20 = 6.3 Pa and then -30°C ~ 18% RH and PH20 = 8.7 Pa]. The results of this study show that FCG rates (da/dN) correlate with the local extrusion aspect ratio (AR), as a result of the combined effects of both the grain structure and the crystallographic texture, regardless of the test temperature. The resistance to FCG increased with decreasing temperature, this effect being attributed to a decrease in humidity content in the studied temperature range. However, comparing the FCG rates generated at 23°C (0% RH and PH2O ~ 6.3 Pa) to those obtained at -30°C (18% RH and PH2O ~ 8.7 Pa), we believe that a residual effect of the temperature is still present, since the da /dN in the first environment are slightly higher than those in the latter environment. We also found that the effect of the temperature varies as a function of AR. The higher is AR, the less the fracture surfaces are rough and the easier they promote the migration of hydrogen contained in water vapor at the crack tip. In the cylindrical profile, only the tests at room temperature (~ 23°C and 50% RH) were performed in the LR (longitudinal) and CR (transverse) oriented specimens, and the results indicate an anisotropy of the FCG rates. These are lower in the LR direction in than in the CR direction. Furthermore, the morphology of the fracture surfaces also varies with the orientation of the plane of cracking. The fatigue crack growth mechanism that takes place is that associated with the change in crack propagation mode. Fatigue cracking mode was found to be intergranular in the CR orientation while the transgranular mode was observed in the LR orientation. Finaly, the fatigue cracking behavior of the studied alloy is controlled by the grain structure and crystallographic texture, two main parameters that are influenced by AR.
Laurita, Angelica. "Characterisation of the surface reactivity of Ni-rich positive electrode materials for Li-ion batteries." Thesis, Nantes Université, 2022. http://www.theses.fr/2022NANU4025.
Full textThe electrification of vehicles is currently based on the use of Lithium-ion batteries using lamellar oxides of nickel, manganese and cobalt (NMC) as positive electrode materials. At the industrial level, the production of nickel-rich materials is now the main focus in order to satisfy the need for longer range battery performances demanded by consumers. However, these materials are affected by strong outgassing during battery cycling. Several studies have been conducted to define the main factors contributing to this outgassing and to find the best solutions to reduce it. The majority of this research, though, focuses exclusively on observing the materials during cycling. To address the necessity of a systematic characterisation of Ni rich NMC in its initial state, the surfaces of several industrial samples were observed using different analytical techniques. 7Li MAS-NMR, XPS, STEM-EELS and SEM-FIB were used to obtain a thorough description of the materials and their surfaces. The limitations and complementarities of each technique are discussed and the results obtained compared and exploited in a synergistic way. It was thus possible to describe in detail the surface of the material in its initial state at the nanometric scale and to evaluate the influence of the storage conditions, as well as the electrode preparation steps. The procedure thus defined could then be used to analyse the surface of materials from different synthesis methods

Full textThis work deals with the design engineering and the characterization of two polymer films made by extrusion. These films are the components of a lithium-polymer battery. They are based on a blend of two immiscible polymers. To take advantage of the opposite properties of the two components, the morphology of the blend must be cocontinuous. Before studying the process ability of such polymer films, morphological and rheological properties are investigated. The observations made by selective extraction and microscopy are compared with the rheological behaviour. Since no model has achieved a good prediction of the behaviour of the storage modulus, a new model has been developed to predict the evolution of G' at low frequencies. In a wider range of frequencies, this particular behaviour of the continuous structure has been assimilated with the chemical gelation of crosslinked networks. The second part of this work described the study of the process. Conductivity, resistivity measurements and mechanical characterization have been used to determine the composition of films. The process has been developed in the laboratory and transferred to the industrial site. It allows us to produce large amount of electrolyte and cathode films to build a lithium-polymer battery. Selective extraction, microscopy, differential calorimetry, mechanical spectrometry and thermogravimetry have been used to characterize these complex systems. Finally, batteries have been made to test successfully the different components, electrolyte and cathode

Full textThe electrode negative research for high energy density batter, !eads us to study the electro-intercalation of lithium in alloys Al-M (where M is Zn, Cd, Sn, In; added in smalls concentrations). The thermodynamic and kinetic characteristics of these alloys Al-Li and Al-M-Li have been determined by GITT and PITT. The new electro analytical method the slow cyclovoltametry, has allowed us to study the evolution of intercalation reaction as well as the stability of the materials to the potentiodynamic cyclability. The experimentation on the Al-Li binary system has shown the irreversibility of metastable phase Al3Li to lithium insertion. The disaggregation of electrode is a phenomenon consecutive to the exit of lithium. The lost of the capacity is due to the electrical isolation of the grains by the electrolyte diffusion in the cracks. Usually, the cyclability of the solid electrode of aluminium or of the alloy Al-M is increasing by using strongly hammered material. The dislocations absorb the variation in volume consecutive to the phase transformation Al Li to Al-Li. The increasing of the morphological stability of the electrode is due to the addition of metal M. Furthermore, the preferential formation of the alloy M-Li makes the kinetic intercalation of lithium increase
