This work studies the sixteenth-century Spanish Epic from a political point of view. It shows that the construction of a mythical and symbolic image of political power -in particular, that of Emperor Charles V and his son Philip II of Spain- is one of the main purposes of the genre and how this strongly determines its nature and the way to approach it. It also shows the way the Epic, similarly to historiography or iconography, does not present a real account of historical facts but, on the contrary, offers a construction of history. Therefore, this work proposes a reading of Spanish Epic, in the first place, taking into account the literary tradition, in particular Virgil's Aeneid, the example of which shaped the epic tradition of the following centuries. Secondly, the work is also concerned with the historical, political and cultural circumstances in which the poems were written, as these would equally determine the genre's nature and aims. In short, this work offers a "historical journey" that analyzes the causes that encouraged the transmission of a particular idea of political power profoundly related to the imperial myth created by Virgil and proposes an interpretation of the texts that takes into account the literary tradition and the contemporary political context, to see how a culture reads and updates the texts of the Past and the way it uses them to serve new causes, assimilated to those of antiquity.
Prophecy is one the best issues to value the continuity of Virgil's poem and the genre's dependence upon history. Its study demonstrates how the Latin model is obeyed and amplified following the dictates of the literary tradition. At the same time, this makes it possible to establish a relation between the texts and the historical, political and cultural circumstances, which enlightens their interpretation. Thus, the work has been divided into five essential parts. The first is obviously concerned with the Classical Epic, especially Virgil's Aeneid, paying special attention to its four prophecies, and Lucan's Pharsalia, one Virgil's earliest followers, the example of which was very significant in sixteenth-century Spanish Epic. The second studies Virgil's reception in Western culture, particularly through the commentary tradition (especially, after Servius, who established a historical and political interpretation of Virgil's text) and Renaissance poetical theory and critic, whose main authors raised it to a canonical status as the best Epic poem ever written. The third analizes the historical evolution of Roman imperial myth, its relationship with the idea of translatio imperii and some legends and historical prophecies that were present in Virgil's text. In particular, these chapters show the way European monarchies, especially the Spanish Habsburgs, followed Charlemagne's example and, once adapted to Christian thought, used the imperial myth to create a symbolic image of their political power, as we find it reproduced in the Epic poems. The fourth is, basically, a study of the Spanish historical and political Epic (which must be considered different from the religious Epic) that takes into account all the issues considered in the previous chapters. It draws a complete view of the genre in Spain making a distinction between the main narrative trends after the example of the most important Epic poems of the century -Ariosto, Tasso, and Camoens, though this last is given a subsidiary importance- and making a virtual classification of the poems. This chapter also studies the different kinds of prophecy present in Epic poetry, its characteristics and the way they can be interpreted. Finally, the last chapters analize some of the most important poems of the Spanish Epic tradition that takes in consideration all the aspects studied, to see how they fulfill the political point of view proposed in this work.

Full textCourtly love can be considered a revolution in the love secular lyric ambit. This lyric born in the courts of the twelfth century and quickly spread throughout the Gallic country up to the medieval Europe, and its influence is present in many lyric works in the way of understanding the poetic figure of love and the woman, especially in the case of the Spanish Golden Age poetry. The intention of this paper it to offer an explanation of the impact of the fin’amors in Hispanic peninsula and, chiefly, in the parallelism between the medieval troubadour and the lyric of Golden Age through a conceptual and structural analysis of the game between imitation and innovation that permeates this poetry, always based on the work of the authors who frame, as an exemplary conductive thread, what became the evolution of the fin’amors for the golden courtly love.
