Abstract:
Nearly all scholarly works about the encounter of Iran with European modernity emphasize the role of translation not only in introducing new literary forms into the Persian literary system, but also in becoming the main engine of change and modernization of the culture. This paper concerns itself with this constructivist narrative of the available historiographical discourse and the translational environment between 1851 and 1921 in Iran. After describing the field of translation in the period in question, I challenge the uncritical conception of translation as a positive force by, on the one hand, investigating hypothetical cultural and linguistic implications, and on the other hand, questioning the power of translation per se, as ascribed to it in the above mentioned historiographical discourse, in socio-cultural modernization. This will prioritize the individual and cultural translational effects over the supposed institutional ones.

Abstract:
Translators’ ideology permeates all non-technical translations, and the need to study the extent to which ideology plays a vital role in the manipulation of literary texts with a political edge is undoubtedly important. As of Iran, the state ideology has been changed from secular to religious (Islamic) after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. This shift of ideology has influenced society in many facets, including language use. Therefore, individuals were encouraged to produce religious discourse to appear popular and this encouragement includes translation too (Amirdabbaghian 2019). This study aims to describe the ideological impact of the social situation (Islamic Revolution) in Iran on the translation of George Orwell’s well-known political novel, Animal Farm (1945) into the Persian language. The research will apply van Dijk’s (1998) theory of ideology and Lefevere’s (1992) theory of translation, rewriting and manipulation of literary fame, to discuss the paratextual differences in both the source and target texts. The target text which has been chosen for the current research is Hosseini and Nabi Zadeh’s (2003) version published by the Doostan publication in Tehran, Iran. Using the paratext of Animal Farm translated into Persian, this article makes an effort to prove that the translators’ ideology influenced by their life experience, social status, and occupation as well as the situation and environment in the target language country may be revealed in the set of tactics used in translating the literary work, in the use of language and in the interpretation of the source text author’s ideas expressed in the text.

Abstract:
This paper discusses translation practices from a historicist viewpoint, contextualizing them in their emerging “episode.” The latter is a concept drawn from sociology of literature and accounts for the rise of certain discourses and ideologies in a society. On the basis of the argument that translation practices are informed by the general literary and socio-cultural milieu in which they are produced and consumed (also known as ideology of representation), the paper studies the translators’ prefaces to three translations published between 1953 and 1978—a period dominated by Leftist and Marxist discourse in Iran. Drawing on a historically oriented model which holds that the translator’s ideology is revealed at the moment in which he/she chooses a text, and continues through the discourse he/she develops to translate that text, the research embarks on studying translation practices on two levels of choice mechanism and prefaces. Prefaces are discussed in the light of the dominant ideology of representation that is characterized by a revolutionary discourse. The research demonstrates that these translators opted for a strategy that incorporates the translations in the Persian cultural setting with minor changes in a way that politicizes the foreign literature.

This paper examines the social aspects of retranslation in contemporary Iran. Foreign classics and award-winning literary books have attracted multiple translations into Persian within a short period of time. For instance, George Orwell’s novella, Animal Farm, has received more than one hundred retranslations in the last 40 years. The aim of this paper is to investigate possible reasons for such an unusually high number of retranslations. By analysing sixteen interviews with Iranian translators and publishers and performing paratextual analysis of four retranslations of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, this paper sheds light on the perceived advantages and disadvantages of retranslation. It does so by drawing on the trust-based approach to the study of translation proposed by Rizzi, Lang, and Pym, and by offering sociological insight into retranslation in contemporary Iran. Four groups of translators are identified: amateur, early career, mid-career, and senior translators. Retranslation for the former two groups is viewed as profitable trade in literary translation market. For the latter two, retranslation is the process of reinforcing trustworthiness at the institutional level that means trust in professionalism of certain Iranian translators and publishers.

Cultural exchanges between Iran and France started over three centuries ago. In spite of the strong relationship between the two countries, some books such as Les Fleurs du mal (Flowers of Evil) went unnoticed in Iranian society. In addition to the literary value of the book, we propose to study ekphrasis in Baudelaire’s poems and its translation into Persian. Its meaning being that of a general description an artwork (imaginary or real), the term ekphrasis belongs to an interdisciplinary field of literature and art where the textual challenges we face may vary from one to another. To narrow down our study, we will focus on four chosen poems that have a minimum of two published translations in Persian, thus allowing the opportunity for a comparative study. These chosen poems, “La Beauté”, “L’Invitation au voyage”, “Les Plaintes d’un Icare” and “Femmes damnées” (“Delphine et Hippolyte”) as well as our corpus translation in Persian, are being studied and analysed through Descriptive Translation Studies. The analysis focuses on the ekphrastic aspect of these poems, their translations into Persian through syntactic and semantic levels and the influence of culture and society on the translation.

Abstract:
The rapidly developing cultural relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Russia predetermine the importance of studying the realities of Russian culture in teaching Russian as a foreign language. Despite the constantly growing interest of the Iranian reader in Russian fiction, we have not found translations of Russian folk tales. A distinctive feature of fairy tales is the presence of specific monsters and mythical creatures in them. The relevance of this study is emphasized by the fact that the opinions of researchers on the issue of translating these realities are divided: some researchers note that realities are untranslatable, others argue that there are no words that would be impossible to convey in another language. This research work presents methods and techniques for an adequate and equivalent translation of the proper names of mythical creatures that are the heroes of Russian folk tales of a magical nature. The translation experiment was conducted in student classes of the RFL departments of higher educational institutions of Iran. The main methods on which the study is based are the comparative method, the method of linguistic description, and the method of experiment. The students were asked to translate typical sentences, selected by continuous sampling, in which there was a mention of the magical characters of Russian folk tales. The purpose of the experiment is to identify what methods and techniques of translation strategies were used in the process of translating realities that do not have equivalents in the Persian language. Thus, the empirical basis of this study is the interpretation of fragments of Russian folk tales of a magical nature in Persian by students learning Russian as a foreign language. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that it is the first attempt to analyze the method of equivalent or adequate conveyance of national and cultural color of the Russian fairy tales characters into Persian. Based on the experiment, we can conclude that when translating the names of mythical heroes and monsters of Russian folk tales, students resorted to two main translation strategies − foreignization and domestication. Russian students chose the method of phonetic transliteration and transcription as the main method of foreignization, as well as calques that contribute to the preservation of Russian cultural and ethnic specificity and overcoming the difficulties of conveying semantic content and the national color of the mythical heroes of Russian folk tales. The main technique of the domestication strategy used by students is the borrowing of the designation of a fairy-tale character from the culture of other peoples with whom they were previously familiar. The results of our research can find practical application in literary translation in Iran. Theoretically, the material can contribute to the development of the theory of translation of literary texts of the folklore genre, as well as arouse interest in further research among undergraduates and graduate students studying in higher educational institutions of Iran.

Abstract:
Habitus is one of the key concepts of the Bourdieusian sociology which Translation Studies has benefited. Based on the Bourdieusian sociological model, this study investigated the translatorial habitus of the Iranian translators of English romance novels as far as the translation strategies of culture-specific items (CSIs) are concerned before and after the Cultural Revolution of 1980 in Iran. The research data include 4282 sentences containing CSIs extracted from Rebecca, Sense and Sensibility, and The Great Gatsby, and their two Persian translations. The extracted data were analyzed, adopting a consolidated typology of translation procedures for CSIs. The strategies employed for translating CSIs are presented with frequencies and percentages using descriptive statistics. Moreover, the results were corroborated with a qualitative analysis of some archived interviews printed in Motarjem [the translator] journal. The investigation revealed three essential findings: a marked source-oriented tendency among Iranian translators of the English romance novels when translating CSIs in the Pre-Cultural Revolution era, maintaining the same tendency in the Post-Cultural Revolution era, and finally a growing tendency in moving from Pre- to Post-Cultural Revolution era. The results of the Chi-square test highlighted a significant difference between various strategies used in two eras.

Abstract Translation as interlingual and intercultural communication has always been subject to ideological manipulation. This is due to the fact that some Translation Studies scholars believe that translators are considered as responsible for the reception and survival of literary works among target language readers. The strategies the translators apply throughout the translation process are governed by those who wield power including political and social institutions like the government, the law and publishers. In view of this phenomenon, the current study explores the paratextual strategies applied by Paul Sprachman, an American translator, when he translated Da (2014) from Farsi into English. Using narrative theory, this study analyses how the English translation appears to reiterate notions of Iran and Shia identity as bellicose and anti- liberal by situating Iran’s war literature as dramatic and fictional, rather than as a testimonial to one Iranian woman’s representations of her lived experience. The findings indicate that the textual and paratextual manipulations were in line with the ideology of the receptive environment of the United States with relevance to the discourse of the war in Iran.

Purpose of the study: The present research aims to explore the impact of the dominant ideological values on the front covers (as a form of paratexts) of translations of children’s literature in Iran. Moreover, the study is going to discuss the effect of such ideological manipulation on the children’s perspective about the world as well as their own identity. Methodology: Based on the Foucauldian sense of discourse, which considers any piece of knowledge, either textual or visual, as discourse, the study employs discourse analysis (DA) as its theoretical and analytical framework. Accordingly, the collected data of this study consist of front covers, are understood as discourse, and each one is analyzed carefully with a focus on the impact of ideological manipulation on paratextual material of Persian translations of children’s literature. Main Finding: The findings revealed the supreme role of ideological constraints in the manipulation of front covers of translations of children’s literature in Iran. Application of the study: The current study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on the ideological manipulation of translation of children’s literature at the paratextual level in particular. Novelty/Originality of this study: With respect to the marginal position of translation of children’s literature in the Iranian literary polysystem, little effort has been made in this area, and ideological studies of this genre in Iran, in particular. Therefore to fill this void, the current study attempts to examine the impact of ideological constraints of Iranian society on the translation of children’s literature.

Le traducteur littéraire en Iran est le maillon principal d’une chaîne qui contribue à la création et au développement de nouvelles formes et de nouveaux thèmes dans la littérature nationale. Dans l’immense majorité des cas, c’est lui qui amorce le processus de production d’une traduction par la sélection de l’œuvre à traduire. Mais ce choix n’est pas anodin : il est tributaire de toute la trajectoire de la vie sociale du sujet traduisant, son habitus selon Bourdieu et son horizon selon Berman ; il est soumis à la position occupée par le traducteur en fonction du niveau de son capital symbolique, social et économique accumulé par ses prises de position, en l’occurrence ses traductions précédentes. Une fois l’œuvre sélectionnée, le choix de la stratégie traductive suit le même schéma, l’habitus et la position du traducteur peuvent l’orienter vers telle ou telle stratégie ou démarche. À cela s’ajoute la visée de la traduction selon le traducteur : veut-il gagner de l’argent ou la reconnaissance de ses pairs ? The literary translator in Iran is the key link in the chain of translation that contributes to the creation and development of new forms and themes in national literature. For the most part, it is the translator who begins the process of producing a translation by selecting the source text. However, this choice is not insignificant: it is affected by the whole trajectory of the translator's social life, his habitus according to Bourdieu and his horizon according to Berman; it is subject to the position occupied by the translator, and depends on the level of his symbolic, social, and economic capital which the previous expression of his standpoints, in this case his translations, have accumulated. Once the source text has been selected, the choice of the translation strategy follows the same pattern. It is the habitus and the position of the translator, which can orient him towards a particular technique or approach. Furthermore, the aim of the translator is important: does he/she want to earn money or recognition from his/her peers? Does he/she choose to subvert the established rules or to respect them in his/her translation? By analyzing the case of (re)translations into Persian of Albert Camus' Caligula, using a multidisciplinary approach at the crossroads of sociology and translation studies, the present study attempts to provide an overview of the field of literary translation in Iran and to identify the role of the agents who play an active role in it such as the translator, the publisher, the controlling authorities and agencies such as cultural ministries and academies, as well as the booksellers whose influence on the reception of (re)translations has often been ignored in translation studies of the Iranian context

España e Irán (Persia) como dos cunas de civilización y cultura, por su rica variedad de atractivos tipos de literatura, se consideran los tesoros de valor incalculable para la literatura mundial. Sin lugar a dudas las relaciones culturales y literarias entre España e Irán han sido de gran interés y construyen la base para un mayor conocimiento mutuo y un impulso para incrementar los lazos de unión entre estos dos países. Esta relación mutua para establecer una comunicación efectiva resulta imposible sin ayuda de la traducción y de los traductores, los cuales jueganun importante papelcomomediadores. Una partenotable deestarelaciónestá vinculada con las obras clásicas. Entre diferentes tipos de traducción, la traducción de los clásicos conforma un interesante campo: la ausencia de estudios sobre las traducciones que se habían hecho acerca de las obras clásicas persas en España me llevó a plantearme el objetivo básico de analizar esta modalidad de traducción. Como el título de la investigación identifica, el objetivo principal del presente trabajo es realizar el análisis de las traducciones en España de las obras persas más importantes de la época medieval y la recepción de las mismas en este país; para ello como modelo, tomamos los ejemplos de las traducciones hechas de dos grandes obras (Golestán de Sa’di y Diván de Hafiz), destacados poetas persas conocidos a nivel internacional, con obras que se han traducido a muchos idiomas. Uno de los asuntos importantes que abarca este trabajo se refiere a los retos de la traducción literaria clásica a fin de aproximarse a esta traducción especializada y enfrentarse al desafío que supone este tipo de traducción; asimismo, se trata de establecer el nivel del conocimiento y la capacidad del traductor de recrear el lenguaje poético del original. Se pretende también evaluar la recepción de esta literatura, a partir –básicamente– de las traducciones. En esta investigación se ha elegido las últimas traducciones, las cuales se han hecho directamente de persa a español de dos grandes obras persas; los traductores profesionales de estas obras son: Joaquín Rodríguez Vargas quien ha traducido el Golestán de Sa’di con el título español La Rosaleda; y Clara Janés junto con Ahmad Taheri, que han podido traducir varios de los gazales de Hafiz con el título 101 poemas. Para llevar a cabo la evaluación de la calidad de estas dos traducciones poéticas clásica comparándolas con sus textos de origen y examinar su grado de fiabilidad, posibilidad de generalización y pertinencia, se ha recurrido a algunas de las tendencias deformantes en traducción descritas por Antoine Berman.
Spain and Iran as the cradle of civilization and culture, for their rich variety of attractive types of literature, are considered invaluable treasures for world literature. Undoubtedly, the cultural and literary relations between Spain and Iran are the basis for a greater mutual knowledge and an impulse to increase the ties of union between these two countries. This mutual relationship to establish effective communication is impossible without translation and the translator. Among different types of translation, the translation of the classics forms an interesting field. Thus, the absence of study on the translations of Persian classical works in Spain led me to consider the basic objective of analyzing this type of translation. The main objective of this work is to analyze the translations of the most im portant Persian works of medieval times in Spain and their reception in this country; We take the examples of translations of two great works(Gulistan by Sadi and Diwan by Hafiz), well- known Persian poets whose works have been translated into many languages. One of the important issues covered in this work refers to the challenges of classical literary translation to approach this specialized translation and to face challenges that this type of translation implies; also to identify the level of knowledge and the ability of the translator through his selection of words that has managed to recreate the poetic language of the original. It is also about evaluating the reception of this literature, starting –basically– from the translations. This research has chosen the latest translations that have been done directly from Persian to Spanish of two great Persian works; The professional translators of these works are: Joaquín Rodríguez Vargas, who has translated Sadi’s Gulistan with the Spanish title Rosaleda; and Clara Janés with Ahmad Taheri have been able to translate several of Hafiz's Gazales under the title 101 poems. To compare the evaluation of quality in these two classical poetic translations created from their source texts and to examine their validity, reliability, generalizability and relevance, among twelve deforming tendencies in translation mentioned by Antoine Berman, some of them have been used in the present study.

Abstract:
This study is inspired by two phenomena: first, the interest among certain translation studies scholars in sociological theories to account for the social implications of translation and translational activities; and secondly, the transformation of Iranian society along with its systematic and systemic integration into the globalized society. It attempts to analyze the role of translation –products and processes– in how modernity and Islam have been introduced to Iranian society of the 19th century and that of the 1990s, respectively. Theoretical frameworks to define translation, describe society, and study the socio-political impact of translation are derived from Niklas Luhmann’s theories of communication, society and politics. His theory of communication is used to define translation as a communication medium that makes communication across linguistic, semiotic and historical borders more probable. As a medium, translation can lend itself to two distinct levels of understandings. While the first focuses on actual translation products at textual level, i.e. inter-lingual translation products, the second addresses translation processes at macro-level, which enable professional role players in a social system such as the system of religion to draw communicatively the attention of other systems such as the system of politics. His theory of society serves to describe the semantics and structure of Iranian society during the 19th century. In the latter period Iran is caught in the avalanche of modern world politics and economy. It begins to use translation, among others, as an efficient mean to learn and derive information about the modern Europe. The new information raises communicative complexity in the society, the efficient handling of which gives birth to modern structures. Luhmann’s political theory is used to analyze Iran’s post-revolutionary political system and its interaction with the system of religion. Iranian theocracy is considered undemocratic less due to the unification of religion and politics than due to its faulty differentiation into the subsystems of administration, politics and public. The way the system understands Islam is crucial in shaping political institutions and organizations as well as in evolving political structures (defining which politically relevant issues are taken into consideration as themes for decision making). The socio-political relevance of translation processes is then demonstrated based on how religious intellectuals take the task of ‘translation proviso’ seriously by translating modern political thinking into a religious communication, and in so doing, draw the attention of theocracy. Four translations of the Quranic verse 4:34 as well as an analysis of religiously informed political theories formulated in the intellectual journal of Kiyān will serve to demonstrate how religious intellectuals’ reformist re-translation of Islam produces new communicative themes in the public opinion and hence draws the attention of theocracy. The findings, of interest for translation studies, sociology of religion, political science and Iranian studies, show that translations, by disseminating information and raising complexity in society, are basic social operations with consequences for different spheres of society.

A tradução de clássicos feita diretamente a partir do seu idioma original tornou-se um grande chamariz para os leitores. Assim, obras literárias já conhecidas há muito tempo do público brasileiro através de traduções indiretas, principalmente do inglês e do francês, estão sendo reapresentadas agora sob a forma de traduções diretas. Diante do impacto da literatura russa no Ocidente a partir do final do século 19, esta dissertação tem como objeto de estudo as traduções diretas e indiretas para o português de dois grandes autores russos, Tolstói e Dostoiévski, tomando como base a teoria dos polissistemas (Even- Zohar, 1990) e os Estudos Descritivos da Tradução (Toury, 1995; Lefevere, 1992). A partir de comentários elaborados por teóricos e estudiosos da literatura, críticos e tradutores, procura-se determinar a imagem desses autores e de suas respectivas obras - e também da própria literatura russa como um todo - construída por essas traduções, bem como verificar em que medida a imagem resultante das traduções diretas recentemente publicadas difere daquela produzida pelas transposições indiretas.
Direct translations of classic works from the original language have become a major factor used by the publishing industry to attract the reading public. Thus, literary works that had originally reached the Brazilian reading public via indirect translations, primarily from an English or French source text, are now being rendered into Portuguese directly from Russian originals. Considering the impact that Russian literature had in the Western world when it started to circulate in translation in the late 19th century, this thesis focuses on direct and indirect translations into Portuguese of the work of two great Russian authors, Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoievsky. The study is informed by polysystem theory (Even-Zohar 1990) and Descriptive Translation Studies (Toury, 1995; Lefevere, 1992) and aims, through the analysis of comments produced by literary theoreticians, scholars, critics, and translators, both to determine the image of these authors and their respective works - and of Russian Literature as a whole - that was constructed by these translations and to verify to what extent the image resulting from recent direct translations from the original Russian texts differs from that which was produced by indirect renderings.

The presented article discusses the issues of Nakhchivan literary environment and literary translation. It is noted that translation is a creation in itself, and the activities of representatives of the Nakhchivan literary environment in this area are exemplary. In general, during the independence period, some experience was gained in the literary environment of Nakhchivan, translations from German, English and French by our poets and writers Hamid Arzulu, Shirmammad Gulubeyli, Shamil Zaman who is famous as poet, prose-writer and translator were delivered to readers in the form of books and works were published in the press. The examples presented in the article once again prove the perfection of the writers' translation activities, their translations from German, English and French provide the Azerbaijani reader with full information about the society, people and their life of these peoples. Abstract:
This article examines the specifics of the translation of irony in Margaret Mitchell’s novel “Gone with The Wind”. The relevance of the article lies in the problems of translating an artistic technique from English into Russian. The purpose of the article is to identify the definition of the term “irony” and ways to translate it based on the works of scientists. The research methodology consists of analyzing the techniques of translating quotations from the original text of the novel and its translation. As a result of the study, the most effective translation techniques were identified, such as: complete translation with minor lexical or grammatical transformations; antonymic translation; addition of semantic components; cultural and situational substitution. The specifics of the translation of irony in the text using transformation techniques were also determined, due to the special role of this literary technique in the context of the novel. The theoretical basis of this article is the classification of translation techniques by T. A. Kazakova. The conclusions of the study show which are the most effective translation techniques used in translating the artistic technique “irony” from English into Russian.

Abstract:
Purpose. The article deals with various lexico-stylistic means of portraying a literary character. The analysis is based on the empirical study of the story “The Pool” by a famous English writer William Somerset Maugham. The main methods used in the research are: the method of contextual analysis and the descriptive-analytical method. Results. The results of the research revealed that the peculiar characteristic of the story “The Pool” as well as of many other Maugham’s stories is the author’s strong presence. The portrayal characteristics of the protagonists, their manner of speech, the surrounding nature greatly contribute to creating the unforgettable characters of Lawson and his wife Ethel. Somerset Maugham employs various lexico-stylistic means to create the images of Lawson and Ethel, allowing the reader to vividly portray their personalities. Practical implications. The received results can be used in teaching Stylistics of the English language, stylistic analysis of the text as well as theory and practice of translation, in writing course and graduation papers.

Abstract:
Purpose. The goal of the present article is to study various means of creating a literary character. Analyzing the creative work of a famous English writer William Somerset Maugham and basing on the story «The Kite» an attempt is made to scrutinize Maugham’s peculiar style and lexico-stylistic devices he employs to create the main female characters of the story «The Kite». The main methods used in the research are: the method of contextual analysis and the descriptive-analytical method. Results. The results of the research revealed that the peculiar characteristic of the protagonists of the story “The Kite” is the author’s strong presence. Portraying the characters of Missis Sunbury and Miss Bevan, Somerset Maugham pays special attention to precise description of their appearances and manner of speech. Employing various lexico-stylistic devices, S. Maugham creates extraordinarily vivid characters. Practical implications. The received results can be used in teaching Stylistics of the English language, stylistic analysis of the text as well as theory and practice of translation.
