Abstract:
This thesis is a diachronic account of T. S. Eliot’s speaking voice, which, over fifty years, developed into the meticulously crafted tool of the twentieth-century author and critic and the politically and socially powerful instrument of the public intellectual. Eliot’s voice, although certainly the offspring of the nineteenth-century marriage of authorship as a bona fide profession and oral performance, was, however, unique in its responsiveness to twentieth-century legal and political debates on national identity and stability, copyright, and the powerful potential of recording technologies to both disseminate an author’s words almost exponentially whilst simultaneously encroaching on the traditional material of authorship: print. Indeed, what underpins this thesis is the argument that he was both fascinated by and actively involved in shaping those very discourses on the authority of the spoken voice in the belief that the power of the spoken word, and ultimately of his own voice, held an unrivalled ability to impact on social behaviour and national stability.

Abstract:
Jerome David Salinger´s Holden Caulfield, the protagonist in The Catcher in the Rye, is seen through the lens of psychoanalytical literary criticism. He is a complex character, who is torn between his dreams and emotions. He is often depicted as a liar, a rebel who drops out of school or as a depressed young man who is admitted into care for his mental problems. Some of these issues are hidden in the vernacular teenage language. The image of Holden as having a personality that is in line with narcissism is therefore discussed. The intention is to question whether or not Holden shows symptoms of a narcissistic personality. Contrary to the personality traits that some critics have described, this essay focuses on the sides of Holden´s personality that show empathy, generosity and love, despite the traumas of his childhood.

Barr, A. F. M. Abdul. "Text and sub-text in T.S. Eliot : a general study of his practice, with special reference to the origins and development through successive drafts of 'The Confidential Clerk'." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/15142.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores Eliot's allusive method, that is his use of Judaeo-Christianity with its analogues (and sometimes sources) in pre-Biblical primitive myths and legends. The first chapters study The Confidential Clerk and the draft material of the play which contains overt allusions-subsequently expurgated - to Sargon and Dionysos'as pre-Biblical archetypes of Moses and Christ respectively. I discuss the growth and development of the two legends of Sargon and Dionysos and their Biblical counterparts through successive drafts of the' play. In adapting the Sargon-Moses legend, Eliot was influenced by Sigmund Freud and Sir James George Frazer who both believed that the legend of Moses's birth and early life closely resembles that of his Babylonian predecessor, Sargon of Accad, which the Hebrews imitated. In adapting, on another level of the play, the Dionysos-Christ legend, Eliot was in debt of Frazer and. John M. Robertson who have persuasively shorn the shaping influence of Dionysos and the Dionysos religion upon the Founder of Christianity and the Christian system. I have used the same approach in studying the other plays of Eliot, The same pattern,ie.,the adaptation of a pre-Biblical legend which has its counterpart in the Bible is to be found in The Family Reunion in which Eliot drew upon the Babylonian epic of Gilgamesh from which he adapted the pre- Biblical legend of the Fall and the deluge story. For the minutiae of these legends in the epic of Gilgamesh and their Old Testament parallels Eliot is indebted to Alfred Loisy, the French Modernist theologian who explains the Genesis in terms of Babylonian mythology. In writing. The Cocktail Party, Eliot went to The Golden Ass of Apuleius, an anti- Christian work, from which he transformed the pre-Biblical legend of Isis, the forerunner of the Virgin Mary, as well as other motifs. Finally The Elder Statesman, Eliot's last play, adapts the pre-Biblical legend of Ahriman, an archetype of the Biblical story of Satan and the concept of evil in the Old Testament. But I have not included this play in my thesis, although I have investigated it, because of limitations of length, and also because the connection of text and sub-text in The Elder Statesman is less significant than that in the other plays.

The conceptual basis of the Human Capital Theory determines that one individual, upon acquiring more knowledge and skills, would increase their human capital value, and consequently increase their employability, productivity and income potential. Another important factor is that investment in education leads to an increase in future income, and would have the individual stand out in the society in the form of welfare and technological innovation (CUNHA; CORNACCHIONE JUNIOR; MARTINS, 2010). Considering this assumption, this study aimed to analyze the influence of the master s degree in alumni of the Accounting Sciences course from FECAP from the perspective of the Human Capital Theory. Therefore, a descriptive research was conducted, which used a quantitative and qualitative approach, comprising three steps: a) field survey with a questionnaire applied to all the alumni who graduated until August 30, 2013; b) document analysis of curriculum Lattes of all alumni who responded to the questionnaire, and c) inquiries of alumni PhD to analyze their professional, academic and social trajectory after the Master s degree. The sample comprised 180 alumni with Master s degree and 4 PhD. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and analysis of interview transcripts. The survey results allowed us to identify that Masters in Accounting Sciences from FECAP are mostly male, mean age of 47 years, married, with children, residents in the city of S??o Paulo and majored in Accounting Sciences, whose main paid activity are the market and academy, most are employed in the private sector and have compensation exceeding R$ 9,000.00. The survey showed that there is an improvement in the salary range upon completion of the course. However, men receive the highest remuneration. When considering the main paid activity, data showed that the market pays better than the academy. Most chose the master's degree aiming to expand the possibilities of work, for personal fulfillment and satisfaction and to join and/or ascend the teaching profession. The main factors perceived by FECAP masters as most influenced by the master title (CUNHA, J. V. A., 2007) were: academic spirit, professional differentiation, analytical skills, employability, career opportunities, respectability and academic/professional recognition. When performing the factor analysis, three factors were obtained, considering only ten variables: Factor 1 - nominated Personal Satisfaction, Factor 2 - nominated Employability and Compensation and Factor 3 - nominated Professional Highlight. The academic contribution of FECAP masters focuses on the guidance and participation in examination boards. By analyzing the professional, academic and social history of the PhD in Accounting Sciences, we detected that respondents recognize their role as researchers and the importance of scientific production to society. It is possible to consider that the title has positively influenced FECAP alumni considering the factors recommended by the Human Capital Theory. However, it is still necessary to improve their participation in higher education institutions and their role as researchers, to increase scientific production.

Abstract:
Jonzon, C & Kvist, C (2009). Hur använder barnen miljön i leken?

Saxena, Shishir Rajan. "Linguistic and phenomenological theories of verbal cognition in Mīmāṃsā : a study of the arguments in Śālikanātha's Vākyārthamātṛkā-I and the response in Sucarita's Kāśikāṭīkā." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2019. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/289760.

Abstract:
Mīmāṃsā thinkers propound an epistemology generally characterised as philosophical realism, and given their foundational resolve to disambiguating Vedic comprehension, a similar attitude is reflected in their speculations on the nature of language as well. Unlike some other schools of the Indian philosophical tradition, Mīmāṃsā philosophers admit the reality of words and word-meanings, which led them to formulate two theories whose aim is to explain comprehensively how the cognition of sentential meaning arises from uttered words. These two theories, abhihitānvaya and anvitābhidhāna, are advocated by Bhāṭṭa and Prābhākara Mīmāṃsakas respectively, and are considered as being the fundamental theories of sentential meaning that formed the basis for all classical Indian thinkers debating the nature of linguistic cognition. The Vākyārthamātṛkā-I (VM-I) of Śālikanāthamiśra (9th cent. CE) is considered to be the locus classicus for the presentation of anvitābhidhāna. Sucaritamiśra (10th cent. CE) was the first Bhāṭṭa Mīmāṃsaka to respond to Śālikanātha's criticisms, and he presents abhihitānvaya accordingly in his Kāśikāṭīkā on Kumārila's Ślokavārttika Vākyādhikaraṇa. Modern scholarship is scarce with regard to these two seminal texts, and I present a translation/paraphrase of the several levels of argumentation found in the VM-I. In contrast to the VM-I whose Sanskrit text is published, the Kāśikāṭīkā on the Vākyādhikaraṇa is yet unpublished and I present an annotated edition and translation of Sucarita's essay on vv.110cd-112ab, based on a study of two manuscripts. I endeavour in this thesis to present a philosophical, philological and historical study of these two works and thereby demonstrate the cogent linguistic and phenomenological arguments presented therein. I hope that this thesis may thus indicate some of the complexity and sophistication of the Indian philosophical debates on language, as well as aid in understanding the early history of the formulation of these influential doctrines.

This study attempts to trace the image of the teacher reflected in the corpus of T. S. Eliot’s literary criticism. Known primarily for his poetry, Eliot also generated a great number of critical essays discussing not only literature but also education. With the introduction to poets and historical background in the 18th century, this study assesses the impact and influence from Eliot on literature and society in the 20th century. And through the lens of Eliot’s literary criticism, we try to “overlap” the image of ideal poet and the image of teacher by means of comparing the two fields—literature and education—and thereby arrive at a novel image of teacher. The findings of this study are as follows: (a) teacher as poet is able to create poetic images that are timeless and exert a deep influence on students who in turn have their own impact on others; (b) teacher as poet is able to fix a particular emotion in the right and minimum number of words, just as a poet’s poetry does for its readers; (c) teacher as poet performs a lifelong task, which is to help students to increase their understanding at every stage of their maturing; and lastly, (d) teacher as poet is to teach the lesson of breadth of emotional range with his words, to make students see and hear more than they could ever see without his help.

Liang T''ung-shu (梁同書1723-1815) is one of the most important calligraphers in the Ch''ing (清) Dynasty. He inherited the skills of calligraphy from the Ch''ing (晉), T''ang (唐), Sung (宋), Ming (明) and early Ch''ing (清) Dynasty. He was born in the times when the calligraphy style was changing, however, he still insisted on the style of T''ung Ch''i-chang (董其昌). His skills were mature and reserved. This thesis researches into Liang''s age, family and background of culture, and his skills and theory of calligraphy ensued from the factors mentioned above. The main point discussed in this thesis is the result obtained from the interplay of skills and theory. Besides, this thesis also takes notice of the reasons why Liang T''ung- shu, an important calligrapher so famous at his time and long- lived, had nearly no influence on the calligraphy in the later age.

This dissertation explores the modeling approach, controller design, and the stability analysis for fuzzy bilinear systems (FBSs) and discrete fuzzy bilinear systems (DFBSs). By examination of the modeling problem, this dissertation describes how to transform a nonlinear system with disturbances into a bilinear one with disturbances via the concept of optimization and Taylor expansion, and then adopts Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy modeling technique to construct FBSs and DFBSs with disturbances. The main advantage of the proposed modeling approach is that T-S fuzzy model is especially suitable for a nonaffine nonlinear system and the nonlinear system with a bilinear term. For controller design problem, robust fuzzy controllers are proposed to globally stabilize uncertain FBSs and DFBSs with disturbances via the concept of parallel distributed compensation (PDC). For stability analysis, based on the Lyapunov functional approach and Schur complement, all stability conditions have been derived to guarantee the stability of the overall fuzzy control system via linear matrix inequality (LMI). Furthermore, based on the time-delay phenomenon of the control system, time-delay FBSs with an additive disturbance input and time-delay FBSs with parametric uncertainties are also examined in this dissertation. Finally, some examples and the Van de Vusse model are utilized to demonstrate the validity and feasibility of the proposed control schemes.

Due to the uniqueness of the islands, the literature on Taiwan’s offshore islands has developed an entirely different literary vision from Taiwan. Among these islands, the garrisons that came to be involved in the historical process of Kinmen and Penghu have become a local cultural landscape, shaping a particular yet common phenomenon in the literature on Taiwan’s offshore islands. This study is divided into six chapters. First, the historical context of the literary works on Taiwan’s offshore islands has been sorted out to retrieve the social dynamics at that time, followed by the discussions on the garrison issue through the writing texts of Kinmen and Penghu writers. In the aspect of Kinmen, Wu Jun-yao and Huang Ke-quan’s works have been explored to know the association among the garrison, the nation, and the local society. In the observation of Wu Jun-yao’s works, the evolution of the history of the Kinmen garrison has moved towards the identity between the state and the nation, while the garrison experience in Huang Ke-quan’s works is actually his collective memory that embodies both the nation and Kinmen’s society. In the aspect of Penghu, two novels written by Lu Ze-zhi and Chen Shu-yao have been taken to discuss. Lu’s description of Penghu’s fisherfolk in “Wave of Whispers” has awaken the memory of collective scars caused by the garrison, bringing new interpretation to the so-called native land. Moreover, the conflict between collective identity and national consciousness in this novel also reflects the transformation of power relations in the social structure during that time. As for Chen’s “Liu Shui Zhang”, the entanglements between Penghu’s garrison and local residents, as well as the social issues between the military and women have been described through the writing of the writer’s childhood memories. Finally, the similarities and differences of the garrisons between these two islands have been further explored to compare with the fictional garrisons in offshore-island novels. This study not only promotes the importance of the writing of garrison in offshore-island novels, but also creates a new way of dialogues for the literature on Taiwan’s offshore islands in Taiwan’s literary field.

This thesis focuses on the C''pp(s',t) index, which not only takes into account the degree of process targeting but also takes into account the location of process mean related to the target value. First of all, the comparison between the natural estimator of C''_pp(s',t) with the generalized pivotal estimator Cpp''GPQ(s',t) was made. Secondly, applying the concept of generalized pivot quantity to find an upper confidence bound for C''pp(s',t). Thirdly, a confidence bound of C''pp(s',t) index based on bootstrapping method was discussed. Finally, inconsistency between (modified)proportion of conformance and process (in)capability indices are studied.

The Taiwanese literary scene witnessed a booming era in the 90s of the last century , as David Ter-Wei Wang termed “The resonance of many voices”, following the lift of the Martial ban. Towards the end of the decade, there emerged a distinctive name on the writing scene, Huang Guo-jun, acclaimed to be “singing a different tune from that of contemporaries”. In 2000, his first short story collection Du Wai was published. However, Huang committed suicide by hanging in his home. In the short span of a few years, what legacy has Huang Guo-jun left for the Taiwan literary scene? The earliest person to classify Huang’s novels as a new literary style was Huang Bi-duan,one of the judges of the Unitas Award for New Novelists which Huang entered. Huang Bi-duan had termed that Fanyi Ti. After Huang Guo-jun’s demise, in a letter to Xu Hui-zhi,Yang Mu mentioned that a new literary style had emerged from Huang Guo-jun’s writing. In literary history, very few have been credited with the creation of a new literary style and therefore, it is the intent of this thesis to understand how Huang Guo-jun was worthy of such an honor. Although Unitas Literary Monthly announced plans to publish Huang Guo-jun’s commemorative collection and the magazine’s Special for that issue carried a list of Huang Guo-jun’s unpublished works, the proposed commemorative collection has yet to be seen. This thesis, therefore, bases the discussion on the 5 books already published by Huang, concentrating mainly on the 4 novels. Having drawn reference from a selection of critiques and academic theses of Huang’s works, this thesis employs the strategy of analysing one book per chapter, with the hope of mapping Huang Guo-jun’s writing history by a two-pronged approach: One, combing through his literary achievements; two, detailing the shifts of change in his writing. This thesis engages close reading and analysis of Huang Guo-jun’s works as its main tools, avoiding as far as possible the use of literary theories for discussion, with the exception of using Walter Benjamin in chapter three to conduct a dialogue with Huang. As the discussion of Huang Guo-jun’s four collections unfold, one can see Huang’s aloof stance right from the beginning, setting a detached tone for his writing, a tone which carried over to his second book, showing strong allegorical flavors between realism and fictionalization. The infusion of some “talk show” elements caused a jerk in style in his third work, however, during this period, his trademark sentencing style gained fluency and his stories carried deeper meanings. His final unfinished work Shui men de dong kou can be considered the work closest to his intended literary style, having a clear plot and strong allegorical meaning. Huang’s trademark detachedness in writing, coupled with skilled manipulation of broken time, created a montage of words and an important characteristic of his writing style. However, although Huang Guo-jun’s literary style may now be seen, it has still reached full maturity. while showing its potential. If literary style were an ongoing process , has Huang Guo-jun completed the development of his literary style? In such cicumstances where no definitive answer is in sight, can Huang Guo-jun be termed a “literary stylist”?

According to the translation and interpretation industry survey published by Executive Yuan’s Government Information Office in 2004, literary translation plays a crucial part in the publishing industry. Since there is no study available concerning the teaching and talent cultivation in literary translation in Taiwan, this study aims to investigate literary translation teaching in Taiwan’s universities and graduate institutes/programs. The three research questions are: How is literary translation course taught in Taiwan’s undergraduate and graduate programs? Do instructor’s training foci meet student’s learning expectations? What are the gaps between the training in academia and the professional translators needed in the publishing industry? The methodology of this study is a questionnaire survey. The three groups of respondents are: (1) five undergraduate and four graduate literary translation instructors, (2) sixteen undergraduate and twenty seven graduate students who have taken literary translation course, (3) six editors from four publishers and two professional translators working with publishers. The findings prove that the instructors’ course objectives and major training goals do not fully meet the students’ learning expectations. However, both the instructors and the students agree that ‘translation skills’ is one of the most important training goals. Nevertheless, the editors and the translators do not regard ‘translation skill’ as one of the top three training goals in literary translation courses. The survey result also shows that the instructors put emphasis on ‘translation skills’ and ‘English proficiency’ while the editors and the translators express that ‘Chinese proficiency’, ‘English proficiency’, and ‘cultural background knowledge’ are the three most important requirements for being a literary translator. The research concludes that gaps indeed exist between the academia and the publishing industry in literary translation training. Finally, it is suggested that instructors not to neglect the training in ‘Chinese proficiency’ and ‘cultural background knowledge’; meanwhile, they should take initiative to build contact with translation industry.

This thesis studies the active fault-tolerant control design based on the Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy system models, terminal sliding mode control (TSMC) and nonsingular terminal sliding mode control (NTSMC). This hybrid scheme can keep the advantages of both methods. By using the T-S fuzzy models to approximate the original nonlinear system, the online computation burden can be alleviated since most of the T-S parameters can be offline computed. Moreover, TSMC not only owns the merits, including robustness to uncertainties and/or disturbances, fast response, and easy implementation, but also performs better than conventional sliding mode control (SMC) since the system states of TSMC will converge in finite time to the control objective point. However, there might be singularity problem in the design of TSMC design. To solve the singularity problem, the NTSMC is proposed. The NTSMC can still guarantee that the system state converge in a finite amount of time. The proposed analytical results are also applied to the fault-tolerant control for the attitude stabilization of a spacecraft. Simulation results demonstrate the benefits of the proposed scheme.

In this thesis, we extend Bartoszewicz’s design of quasi-sliding mode control (QSMC) for discrete-time linear systems (1998) to a class of T-S fuzzy-type discrete-time nonlinear systems. The selected sliding surface in this design is allowed to be nonlinear rather than only linear. One class of sliding surfaces is selected, and two quasi-sliding mode controllers according to the variation rate of disturbances are presented in this study. The study also compares the controllers between original nonlinear dynamics and T-S fuzzy-type systems. Simulation results demonstrate the benefits of the proposed schemes.

This research shall examine developments of children’s literature in the Lan Yang region during the past 20 years. This examination will be accomplished through a discussion of activities in the “I-Lan County Children’s Literary Training Camp”, which was organized by Cho Ah Tu and others since 1979. Furthermore, a discussion on the impact of these activities on the workers promoting children’s literature within the Lan Yang region will also be engaged. It is hoped that through this research and documentation of a region’s historic endeavors in the promotion of children’s literature, that regeneration and extension, or perhaps even a new momentum may be gained in the process. The historical scope’s geography for this research spans the organization of content for the I-Lan County Children’s Literary Training Camp between the years 1979 and 1996. Alternatively, the administrative approach of this research adopts a discussion into the result of efforts invested in the integration of education and literature for children. On the literary level, a detailed sampling of literary works by students of the camp will be conducted, as well as sorted and analyzed to reveal the literary character at the time, and their potential course of development. There are six chapters to this research, with the first being the Introduction, which explains motivation, objectives, cultural background, methodology, and the scheme of progression, as well as the scope and limitations of this research. Chapter two discusses the inception and development of “Children’s Literary Training Camp”. The beginning and ensuing development of children’s literary training camp of Taiwan is first explained, and a historical background of the environment at large at that time is offered. Then an illustration by the various periods in the establishment of I-Lan County Children’s Literary Training Camp is presented. The third chapter divides the course design of the camp during its development phase and fruition stage into two discussions, separately with regards to the course modi operandi and content. This chapter concludes by highlighting the different training characteristics of the three founding members, Cho Ah Tu, Lan Shiang Yun, and Liu Sho Nan during the different periods. Chapter four focuses on the analysis of camp members’ background, categorized by founders, lecturers, and the students of the camp, and thus subjected to further analysis. The fifth chapter classifies the works of the students into children’s poems, fairy tales, essays, fables, stories, youth novels, book reviews, and other literary categories, and entered into discussions separately, hoping to achieve a coherent analysis from course design to camp participation to the eventual demonstration of results. The sixth chapter is the author’s conclusion; principally a discussion on the influence of I-Lan County Children’s Literary Training Camp, from which point then offer an illustration of the state of development for children’s literature of the Lan Yang region.

The thesis will do a research upon a literary critic, “Jin Sheng Ta''n”金聖嘆 who devote all his life to P''ing-Tien(make notes and interpret)評點 “Books of Masters”才子書. It also aims at finding how a traditional literary man tries to adjust himself and converse his reading interests from old classics to novels── an arising about literary institution and boundary encountered by Jin in his lifelong career will also be discussed. An investigation upon Jin''s changing reading taste will first be made to pay the way for an retrospective review on the development of denotation and interpretation of old classics── a movement of institution-building for literature comment which aims to improve writing skill, be it in technical or in spiritual aspect. Next, the marginal notes and interlinear two—line commentaries, which are seen beside(within)the text, will be regarded as a particular expression form and further talked in the thesis. In interpreting the “Reading Theory” of Jin Sheng T''an, Structuralism is widely cited explain special language used upon from certain objects. The limit and scope of Jin''s reading theory will be further discussed through the interaction of author─text─reader. A phenomenon widely seen in his book’s comment── author-orientated which denies the readers'' construction of reading, a crisis may come into existence. Finally, tries to apply Jin''s reading theory upon other literature works and probe into how much it influences as a general poetic, so as to indicate Jin''s status in the history of literature.

In this study the assessment of the early reduction of the Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japnoica) in I-Lan Bay was based on the nutritional status of the newly hatched larvae. The Japanese anchovy immigrate to I-Lan Bay to lay eggs in the spawning season. During the spawning season of 1994, from February to April, I took fortnight plankton samples, six times in total. Anchovy larvae were sorted from the samples and their nutritional status was evaluated based on the histological condition of the midgut cells. I defined the nutritional status of anchovy larvae by the histological condition of the midgut cells and applied this method to study the Japanese anchovy larvae collected from a transect crossing Kuroshio, upwelling zone, and continental shelf of the East China Sea in the North Pacific off northeastern Taiwan. My results showed that among the anchovy larvae sampled from the I-Lan Bay, 54% were classified starved. Anchovy larvae caught in the mid spawning season (March 14, starved rate 36%) seemed to have better nutritional status than those caught at the beginning of the season (February 23, starved rate 52%). I found that the nutritional status of anchovy larvae was correlated with the zooplankton biomass in the same sample (rs = -0.94 P=0.004),but not with the zooplankton biomass of the environment in general. When these methods were applied to the Japanese anchovy larvae from the different water mass in the North Pacific northeast off Taiwan, I found that the larvae from the upwelling zone had good nutritional status and low starved rate (19%). Their resistence to hunger was stronger than that of the larvae from the I-Lan Bay

Chinese literature of Japanese in Taiwan is an emerging subject in recent academic circle and extends to multiple trans-region and trans-culture issues.Momiyama Isyou was one of the most typical Japanese literati in Taiwan in the early Japanese ruled period and rich in study values. The study includes six chapters. The first chapter states research motivations, materials and the structure of the study. The second chapter discusses Momiyama’s life story, Chinese literature accomplishment and interactions of Chinese literature in Japan. The close friendship with the circles and abundant Chinese literature editorial experiences help him set up the foundation for being the chief editor of Chinese Column in Taiwan Daily News(Taiwan Nichi Nichi Simpo). The third chapter describes how the Column in the News affects the circles of Chinese literature in Taiwan, Momiyama’s role as a Chinese literature leader and how his relationship with Chinese literature circles was established. The fourth chapter represents analysis of subject in Momiyama’s Chinese poems in Taiwan. Momiyama left a large number of literary creation during the period of Taiwan. From this chapter, we can understand the points of view of Japanese literati in Taiwan and how they wrote about Taiwan by looking into Momiyama’s Chinese poems. This chapter discusses Momiyama’s lyrical poems, landscape poems, folk custom poems and journal in Taiwan with viceroy Kodama Gentarō- “Journey records accompany with viceroy” and “Diary of sailing southward” and analyzes his experiences and transition of mood in Taiwan. The fifth chapter focuses on analysis for Momiyama’s Chinese literature. After studying the contents of his articles, It was found that Momiyama Isyou, swaying between the political instrument and individual emotion, whose struggles and contradictory of innermost feelings were multiple and complicated. As a literatus of Chinese literature, he not only expressed the feeling of life by writing this kinds of articles but also obeyed the authority’s rules and made social commentary responded to the Japanese empire policy. It has become an important issue of career and life for Momiyama Isyou to find out self-image in such a conflict circumstance.
