Abstract:
Videovoci brings together seventeen interviews with writers and artists carried out by the Association Archivio per la memoria e la scrittura delle donne "Alessandra Contini Bonacossi" from 1998 on, within the framework of the project Archivio della scrittura delle donne in Toscana dal 1861 ad oggi (www.archiviodistato.firenze.it/memoriadonne). The publication of Videovoci. Interviste a scrittrici is in fact the result of a ten-year scientific and research project conceived with the aim of valorising the female culture, Italian and other, present in Tuscany. The result of this project takes the form of seventeen speaking biographies: seventeen self-portraits which, with the force of the image and the voice, engage the reader-spectator in a dialogue on the meaning of literary, artistic and political commitment. Schaub, Gayle, and Hazel McClure, eds. Engaging Students through Campus Libraries. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400646218.

Abstract:
This collection of collaborative, high-impact learning experiences in information literacy teaches librarians how to engage students in hands-on, experiential learning. The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) has identified 11 practices that are highly impactful to student learning to designate as high-impact educational practices (HIP). These practices engage students deeply in a meaningful, connected way to their work. Librarians teach and support student learning in many ways that assist these AAC&U practices, such as information literacy instruction for capstone, writing, and first-year seminars and research support for collaborative assignments and projects. Engaging Students through Campus Libraries calls attention to work in information literacy that goes beyond a traditional librarian role; it features librarians and faculty partners who engage in projects that highlight salient, experiential facets of the AAC&U practices in order to teach information literacy. In this book, librarians will learn high-impact, experiential learning models for working with students. They will understand how to think about and describe how AAC&U best practices are currently embodied in their organizations. They will also imagine future learning experiences for students with HIPs in mind, resulting in information literacy that is integrated into disciplinary work in a vital and transformative way.

Abstract:
The first in the IASL-Libraries Unlimited partnership series, this book features contributions written by authors from around the world about their effective collaboration experiences. Collaboration between teachers and school librarians is a topic that is often discussed in the quest for educational excellence, but the international perspective is something that is rarely explored. This text documents the collaboration endeavors in international school libraries and—drawing upon research and direct experience—demonstrates effective collaboration experiences in a range of countries. It also features selected brief case studies as well as several original essays on the topic of collaboration between teachers and teacher librarians in curriculum planning. The result of a joint effort between Libraries Unlimited and the International Association of School Librarianship (IASL), this book shows how collaboration with teachers looks in the international arena. It addresses topics such as collaborating for success with student searching, the roles of librarians and teachers in the research process, principal involvement, information literacy, inquiry-based learning, use of digital resources, models of collaboration for diversity, and evaluation of collaboration. Additionally, the current research findings presented will offer readers new insights into their profession.

Maggi, Mauro, and Paola Orsatti. From Old to New Persian. Edited by Anousha Sedighi and Pouneh Shabani-Jadidi. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198736745.013.2.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at the evolution of Persian, the only language to be substantially documented in all three periods of Old, Middle, and New Iranian on account of its close association with political centres over the centuries: Old and Middle Persian with the Achaemenids and the Sasanians, New Persian with Islamic powers. The chapter includes two parts, preceded by a survey of research on the three stages of Persian. The first part presents the documentation of Old and Middle Persian, discusses the innovations of Old Persian, and considers the transition from Old to Middle Persian. The second part deals with the rise of New Persian by taking into account Early Judaeo-Persian, Persian in Syriac script, Manichaean New Persian, and the early texts in Arabic script. It then discusses the main changes of the language in its literary and non-literary varieties until Contemporary New Persian.

Stray, Christopher, Christopher Pelling, and Stephen Harrison, eds. Rediscovering E. R. Dodds. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198777366.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book offers an assessment of a remarkable classical scholar, who was also a poet with extensive links to twentieth-century English and Irish literary culture, the friend of Auden and MacNeice. Dodds was born in Northern Ireland, but made his name as Regius Professor of Greek at Oxford University from 1936 to 1960, succeeding Gilbert Murray. Before this he taught at Reading and Birmingham, was active in the Association of University Teachers, or AUT (of which he became president), and brought an outsider's perspective to the comfortable and introspective world of Oxford. His famous book The Greeks and the Irrational (1951) remains one of the most distinguished and visionary works of scholarship of its time, though much less well-known is his long and influential involvement with psychic research and his work for the reconstruction of German education after the Second World War. The chapters in this volume seek to shed light on these less explored areas of Dodds' life and his significance as perhaps the last classicist to play a significant role in British literary culture, as well as examining his work across different areas of scholarship, notably Greek tragedy. The book includes a group of memoirs — one by his pupil and literary executor, Donald Russell, and three by younger friends who knew, visited, and looked after Dodds in his last years.

Blum, Deborah, Mary Knudson, and Robin Marantz Henig, eds. A Field Guide for Science Writers. Oxford University Press, 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195174991.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This is the official text for the National Association of Science Writers. In the eight years since the publication of the first edition of A Field Guide for Science Writing, much about the world has changed. Some of the leading issues in today's political marketplace - embryonic stem cell research, global warming, health care reform, space exploration, genetic privacy, germ warfare - are informed by scientific ideas. Never has it been more crucial for the lay public to be scientifically literate. That's where science writers come in. And that's why it's time for an update to the Field Guide, already a staple of science writing graduate programs across the country. The academic community has recently recognized how important it is for writers to become more sophisticated, knowledgeable, and skeptical about what they write. More than 50 institutions now offer training in science writing. In addition mid-career fellowships for science writers are growing, giving journalists the chance to return to major universities for specialized training. We applaud these developments, and hope to be part of them with this new edition of the Field Guide. In A Field Guide for Science Writers, 2nd Edition, the editors have assembled contributions from a collections of experienced journalists who are every bit as stellar as the group that contributed to the first edition. In the end, what we have are essays written by the very best in the science writing profession. These wonderful writers have written not only about style, but about content, too. These leaders in the profession describe how they work their way through the information glut to find the gems worth writing about. We also have chapters that provide the tools every good science writer needs: how to use statistics, how to weigh the merits of conflicting studies in scientific literature, how to report about risk. And, ultimately, how to write.
