Abstract:
Finding ways to link educators conducting research and educational activities is vitally important toward promoting scholarship, resource sharing, and collaboration. One avenue for developing these linkages is a form of computer mediated communications technology called listservs. This article describes the development and evaluation of the DR-ED listserv. Through a subscriber demographic analysis, content analysis of messages, and a subscriber survey, the DR-ED listserv has proven to be successful in terms of the diverse subscriber base it serves and the broad range of topics subscribers have addressed. Further, it serves as a forum to keep current on innovations in medical education and facilitates the formation of collaborative scholarly networks. By way of conclusion, suggestions are offered for those interested in developing listserv technology of their own and conducting research on listservs in general.

Abstract:
The BPD listserv is 25 years old. Starting with just a handful of subscribers, the listserv currently has about 1,760 members. Most are actively engaged educators along with publishers, doctoral students, and others interested in baccalaureate social work education. The listserv has become a mainstay for providing a forum for sharing, research, and many other issues relevant to social work education and practice. This article provides the contexts, history, and stories that have transpired over the years and speculates about the listserv’s future.

Advisors can utilize electronic mail to better serve their advisees' information needs. Advisors can use E-mail to not only select the information that is most relevant to students, but also to provide that information immediately, conveniently, and efficiently. The author, a departmental advisor at a large midwestern university, created a listserv exclusively for her advisees. A recent survey indicated that the students are accessing their E-mail regularly, finding the information posted to the listserv useful to them, and often relying on the listserv as a primary information source.

Abstract:
This study sought to determine the effects of electronic communication (i.e., e-mail and listserv communication) among triads of student teachers, college supervisors, and cooperating teachers. Twenty-one volunteer participants began as the initial cohort: five college supervisors, eight cooperating teachers, and eight preservice teachers. Each participant had a portable computer equipped with a modem. Four data sets were used: 1) individual self-assessments; 2) printouts of all e-mail communication related to the project; 3) printouts of all listserv responses; and 4) within-triad and between-triad group assessments. Participants' self-reporting of computer proficiency showed significant differences. The nature of participants' e-mail messages (e.g., lesson plan discussions) and listserv responses are discussed in relation to their overall evaluation of this opportunity.

Abstract:
Given the potentially serious consequences of suboptimum medication management practices in elementary and secondary schools and the fact that this topic has been subject to little empirical inquiry, the purpose of this study was to obtain a preliminary understanding of the types of medication management problems that school nurses face, as well as the strategies they use to solve those problems. An analysis of messages related to medication management that appeared on the SCHLRN-L listserv (a 1,400-member discussion group for schools nurses) was performed. All messages sent to the listserv during a 5-month period were monitored. Any discussion thread that began during this time period and addressed the management of medications was selected for possible inclusion in the study. The result was a group of 71 threads. The listserv participants described a wide array of medication management problems and suggested numerous strategies for solving them. This study shows that serious medication management problems exist in schools and that school nurses make use of various strategies or “tricks of the trade” to handle these problems. This research highlights the need for a contribution from the pharmacy profession in this important and neglected area of drug therapy.

Abstract:
To enhance the opportunities for students to access information and the instructors of a large, general plant science class, “Virtual Classroom” concepts using computers resources were implemented. The Virtual Classroom uses three computer resources: 1) a closed subscription LISTSERV for the extramural class discussions, 2) electronic mail for homework assignment and submission, and 3) a World Wide Web Internet homepage for the course. In a large, introductory-level class, student–teacher interaction can be limited. The size of the class and the content may inhibit questioning and discussion among the class participants. The LISTSERV allowed for questions to be posed by students at their leisure and facilitated discussion among students and the instructor outside of the confines of the class meeting. The LISTSERV also allowed instructors to to respond to the students by referring questions to “experts” on a particular subject. Using e-mail for homework assignment and submission was useful for tracking when student read assignments and submitted completed assignments. Electronic assignment grading and returning was paperless and easy for instructors to maintain. The homepage provided students with a permanent syllabus, lecture outlines, homework assignment descriptions, and study aids. Additionally, from the homepage students were able to send e-mail to instructors and search library databases and other electronic databases. Experiences from the instructors using these computer resources will be presented and discussed.

Abstract:
The sex testing of South African runner Caster Semenya in 2009 was widely discussed in media, but the most serious and significant sites of debate may have been within the cultures and institutions of track & field itself. In this article, we report findings from an analysis of an online track & field community—TrackNet Listserv—through which the Semenya case, and the politics and ethics of sex testing, were discussed. The results suggest that listserv members recognized the contestability of sex testing policies and identified with feminist struggles, but nevertheless largely argued for sex testing’s necessity in light of understandings of the biologically normative female body and the importance of maintaining fairness in and through sex-segregated sport. The implications for the sport of track & field and for sporting feminisms are discussed.

Abstract:
A task force of librarians developed an introductory course on the Internet which was conducted over the university’s e-mail network. This sixteen-lesson course was distributed via listserv to students, staff, residents, and faculty, some using university facilities and some using equipment at their home or office, in various locations throughout the state. Initially, more than 450 people subscribed. Subscribers received two lessons a week for eight weeks. Lessons were made available via FTP or gopher after initial distribution. Content included basic information, troubleshooting advice, and exercises for practice. Pre- and post-tests were conducted via listserv to assess the participants’ prior knowledge and subsequent knowledge gain. This article describes the development of the online course. It also discusses the results of pre- and post-tests, and the implications for the library’s instructional role of using an online instruction medium.

Abstract:
Summary This study was conducted to understand the impact of oncology social work office location on breast cancer patients’ access and utilization of social work services. It also explored the current status of oncology social work offices and the perceptions among Association of Oncology Social Work Listserv members. The frequency and types of interventions and referral time were determined retrospectively. Association of Oncology Social Work Listserv members were surveyed. Findings From 461 new breast cancer patient charts, 52 were referred to social work during study period. Face-to-face interventions decreased by 0.8 contact ( p = .0221) and telephone interventions increased by 1.8 contacts ( p = .0293) after social work office was relocated away from clinical area. Referral time to social work services decreased unexpectedly by 14.5 days ( p = .076) after office relocation. Association of Oncology Social Work Listserv survey results identify an office location as possible barrier, though most respondents have a private office in clinical area, accessible to patients. Survey finding is limited due to low response rate. Applications There are many challenges to ensuring timey and effective delivery of social work services to breast cancer patients. Social Ecological framework is used to understand the impacts of office location on access to social work services. Study results suggest that office relocation has had mix impacts on patients. Raising awareness of social worker services among patients early in cancer trajectory is needed for patient empowerment and to ensure access to social work services. Further research is needed to understand barriers, identify effective strategies in order to guide and improve clinical practice.
