Abstract:
The graphemic form <Lisbon> in the title refers to an underlying [ˈlɪzbən] with a voiced heterosyllabic /zb/ cluster. Chomsky and Halle (1968, p. 150, n. 105) indicate the example Lisbon as one of the exceptions to the devoicing of obstruent clusters in English. Corresponding orthographic <sb> clusters in Portuguese obey a rule according to which a [ʒ] occurs as the phonetic realization of an underlying and unspecified for voice and place of articulation /S/ that assimilates the voicing of the following consonant [b], as in Lisboa [liʒˈboɐ]. It should be borne in mind that not only are /zb/ clusters exceptional in English but that /zb/ and /sb/ may be equally licensed (as in asbestos), while the cooccurrence of voiced and voiceless segments within a cluster is not possible in Portuguese. This paper aims at obtaining answers to the following research question: do native speakers of English experience difficulties when producing Portuguese voiced sC heterosyllabic clusters, taking into account (a) the different syllable structures of these clusters in the L1 (English) and the L2 (Portuguese), and (b) the assimilation process in Portuguese, whereby if C is voiced in sC, then /S/ = [ʒ]? The main conclusions are that assimilation seems less problematic than palatalization for native speakers of English when producing heterosyllabic word-medial Portuguese sC clusters and that individual differences may play an important role. More research is needed, with a focus on instruction and with more informants, to confirm or dismiss these conclusions.

(NLS MS 5640 ff. 55–58) Dick Ramage of Scotston Park, West Lothian, was Robert Liston’s nephew. He looked after the Listons’ home, Millburn Tower, and their estate on their behalf while they were in Turkey. He died, aged thirty-eight, in Lisbon in December 1815. This, and the death of his brother Sandy (Alexander Liston Ramage) in 1814, may have contributed to the extended period of time the Listons were on leave from Constantinople (October 1815 to July 1817)....

In Ninth International Conference on Higher Education Advances. Valencia: Universitat Politècnica de València, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/head23.2023.16090.

Full text
Abstract:
Academic rankings provide an opportunity to increase visibility and reputation of institutions and can be used as benchmark tools for quality improvement, despite much criticism of biased coverage and flawed methodologies. As part of the University of Lisbon, Técnico Lisboa – a leading Portuguese engineering and technology school – has monitored and examined rankings through its Rankings Observatory in the context of strategic options, but institutional transformations have been an obstacle to exactly measure Técnico’s worth or weight in the context of the University of Lisbon. Those transformations have not contributed to leverage the positioning of the University of Lisbon in major rankings either. This paper discusses the impact of institutional transformations on the University of Lisbon and Técnico in rankings, describes attempts made by Técnico to overcome these constraints and gives examples of how Técnico applies rankings as internal benchmark tools towards continuous improvement.

Abstract:
This paper aims to identify and decode the diversity of transition spaces, in-between public, and private urban elements. These transition spaces, shaped by architectural devices that mediate public-private relations and the activities that unfold in them, reveal specific urban qualities. By elaborating a previous classification of these transition architectonic devices, identifying their types, and understanding their appropriations, the research expects to decode the composition of these transition fluid figures in urban space. These porous spaces build the hypothesis that the condition of urban life is correlated with the form that supports it, making of transition spaces urban catalysts. Having the city of Lisbon as study field, this research combines a typo-morphological approach with the behavior impact of transition space users, proposing a matrix, supported by interpretative drawing, that allows to focus on diverse case studies using distinct indicators. Keywords: transition spaces, threshold, typo-morphology, material urbanity, Lisbon.

Abstract:
Feira do Relógio on Avenida de Santo Condestável in Lisbon, is a "feira de levante" that is set up and dismantled every Sunday on the road. The road for cars becomes pedestrian, and is revealed as a support contrasted with the fabrics, poles and removable tables that house goods on the asphalt. This work investigates the relationship between the specific conditioning factors of the context and the generative operatives of the case from its varied formalizations. The research focuses on the relationship between the detail of the objects and their production of other bodies, at other scales. Feira do Relógio is read as a street-market, in which its ephemeral condition of the program produces a rapid transformation: from fast lane to pedestrian street. This case study has an infrastructural component, capable of absorbing contingencies, the result of the dynamics of its materialization and design. Abstract:
Announced by the unplanned, synchronous ringing of bells throughout the city, a series of tremors shook Lisbon on the morning of All-Saints Day, November 1, 1755 in what would become an era-defining urban calamity. Beyond the immediate destruction, the earthquake precipitated a tsunami and widespread fires that collectively killed approximately one quarter of the city’s population and destroyed nearly all of its buildings. Both the King, Joseph I, and the Prime Minister, Sebastião de Melo, later named the first Marquis of Pombal, survived.

Abstract:
The fact that the city is essentially composed of residential tissue, function that being more " silent " over the role of public space is what constitutes its connective tissue, gathers with the fact that a housing crisis as gone through and marked the twentieth century. Considering the above described framework, the research proposes to structure typomorphological study based on a diachronic analysis of urban housing public projects built in Lisbon between 1910 and 2012. The elected tool for defining the analytical path and supporting the results, is a designed based method that allow the establishment of a cross-reading guideline of supra-structural factors, analysis to the relationship with the existing city, as well as a morphological approach of built projects. The research process proposes to stabilize seven types of public housing urban projects built in Lisbon in the 20th century.

Abstract:
The urban fabric, both in his public and private component, translates the parallel stress of tension and change, transformation and permanence, which characterize the space and architecture that builds the city. This dynamic process of urban production is reflected in the continuing evolution of the shape and organization of the urban block as an intermediary between the housing function and other urban activities. The research seeks to undertake a study of the urban form in Lisbon from its private component, expressed in the study of the block, the built fabric basic unit and the plots the support of dynamic that configures it. To this end, we intend to place this element in its current state as a result of an evolutionary process, serving as a principle for a typo-morphological study.
