Abstract:
This chapter discusses the first several weeks of the Vietnamese delegations time in Lisbon. It describes their use of deliberately exotic gowns to attract the attention of the court and the ruler, a strategy that proves very effective. The chapter describes the deliberations about where to house the men, and the final decision to place them in the Necessidades Convent of the Oratorian congregation. The chapter then briefly gives a background on the Oratorians as well as the status of Catholicism in late eighteenth-century Portugal. It then introduces the Portuguese royal family, Binh’s potential patrons, and in particular the ruler, Dom João. It points out the numerous weaknesses of the Portuguese court and its ruler, crippled by an indecisive personality, and a precarious political position cause by his serving as regent to the Queen, who recently plunged into madness. Her insanity had been caused by the sudden death of her eldest son, which had thrust the unprepared Dom João into the position of crown prince. It concludes by discussing the first formal audience given to the Vietnamese delegation, when the met the prince and his wife at his Queluz palace, presented their gifts, and briefly described the nature of their mission.

Hess, Edward D. The Successful Family Business. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216021155.

Full text
Abstract:
Over 80% of the businesses in the United States are family-owned and managed. From the corner deli or barbershop to global empires in brewing, media, and cleaning products, family businesses embody the entrepreneurial spirit that drives innovation and economic growth and that represents the hopes and dreams of millions for independence, self-sufficiency, and wealth. And yet the track record for entrepreneurial businesses is poor: over three-quarters will fail during the first five years and only 10% will survive a decade. Family business statistics show that fewer than one-third pass succesfully to a second generation, often the result of insufficient planning. Drawing from numerous in-depth examples (both positive and negative), Edward Hess offers a fascinating glimpse into the dynamics of family business management and specific strategies to promote the health of the enteprise. A comprehensive guide, The Successful Family Business covers the spectrum of topics from creating a family values statement and code of conduct to resolving conflicts among siblings to managing transitions in leadership and the potential sale of the business. Other issues include: defining perks and benefits (for family and non-family members), working with the board of directors, and going public. Hess concludes with a series of operating rules that apply to every family business and a listing of practical references and resources.

Diaz, Clive. Decision Making in Child and Family Social Work. Policy Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1332/policypress/9781447354444.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book presents new research on the extent to which parents and children participate in decision making when childcare social workers are involved and it considers two key meetings in depth: child protection conferences and child in care reviews. There is currently a great deal of interest in how social workers can work more effectively with families and in particular give children a voice. There is also considerable public and media interest in the child protection system, in particular relating to how children are safeguarded by social workers. This book will argue that unless we listen to (and act upon whenever possible) the views of children it is very difficult to safeguard and offer them an effective service. The unique selling point of the book will be that it is based on original solid empirical research following interviews with multiple stakeholders across two local authorities in England including children (n=75), parents (n=52), social workers (n=11, independent reviewing officers (n=8) and senior managers (n=7). This book will consider how 10 years of austerity has impacted on the child protection system and it will have a particular focus on how current practice leads to children and parents often feeling oppressed and excluded in decision making about their lives. The book promises to be authoritative and informed on issues on the ground and very relevant to both policy and practice.

Feagin, Susan L. Where Hedda Dies. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190467876.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
Hedda’s behavior displays a pattern of attempts to distance herself from her responsibilities, which is integral to her concept of freedom. She exploits her social status, promotes outmoded and impractical ideals, prefers to listen to people’s exploits rather than engage with the world, and theatricalizes her own behavior. Underlining this flight from responsibility is the back room, significant as the site of her death and illustrative of her desire for freedom. Her death in the back room—a “non-place,” or no place in particular—reflects the vacuity of her quest for freedom. Without responsibilities during her life, her death means nothing, especially to family and friends who survive her.

Abstract:
Abstract: Women’s reproductive health care involves matters of conscience, religion and spirituality on a daily basis. Most patients are are religious and most major religions have positions about reproductive health decisions. Research regarding the effects of religion and spirituality on patients and their decisions is mixed. Measures of religious practice (e.g. church attendance) are most closely tied to sexual practices, contraceptive and pregnancy termination decisions. For most women, the relationship between reproductive health and their religion or spirituality is complicated. There is a great need for research testing interventions including spiritual and religious components for women making difficult reproductive health decisions. Health care providers who hope to provide women’s health care that includes religious and spiritual dimensions should listen to their patients, ask questions, educate themselves about different religious beliefs and practices, offer fertility awareness-based methods of family planning, and reflect on how their own spiritual and or religious beliefs impact their practice.

Full text
Abstract:
Music therapists are university-trained professionals who invite palliative care patients, and their significant family members and friends, to explore how creative music-based experiences in therapeutic relationships can address biopsychosocial needs and enhance spiritual well-being. The chapter illustrates how music therapists can extend music’s power to help patients across the lifespan live a quality life and support their families. Patients often choose familiar music to listen to, sing, or play that elicits people, places, emotions, and thoughts that they want to connect with. Through music therapy song writing and improvisation, patients and families creatively explore their ‘playful’ musical and unique selves, and potentially experience helpful new awareness, wonder, pride, and accomplishment. Patients’ song composition legacies can also support the bereaved. Music therapists offer guided music and relaxation or imagery interventions, to soothe and help with symptom management. Extensive quantitative and qualitative research informing music therapy is also outlined and music-based care suggestions are provided for when music therapists are not available.

Jones, Mary Ellen. John Jakes. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216187813.

Full text
Abstract:
John Jakes, often called the people's author and godfather of the historical novel, has made American history come to life in his series The Kent Family Chronicles and The North and South Trilogy. Through these novels, Jakes conveys the sweep of American history, both its glory and its grim scenes, from the American Revolution to the opening moments of the 20th century. Never glossing over the nation's flaws (slavery, materialism, a double-edged Manifest Destiny), Jakes nevertheless affirms American values. This is the first full-length critical study of his work. It examines in detail Jakes' 13 major novels to date and assesses his methods as America's history teacher. In Part I, following a chapter on Jakes' life, Jones examines the early novels and Jakes' use of the genres of historical fiction, the western, and the historical family sage. Part II, The Kent Family Chronicles, devotes an individual chapter to each of the novels in this series, <i>The Bastard</i>, <i>The Rebels</i>, <i>The Seekers</i>, <i>The Furies</i>, <i>The Titans</i>, <i>The Warriors</i>, <i>The Lawless</i>, and <i>The Americans</i>. Part III, New Beginnings, features chapters on <i>North and South</i>, <i>Love and War</i>, and <i>Heaven and Hell</i>, and chapters on <i>California Gold</i> and <i>Homeland</i>. The examination of each novel in this study includes sections on plot development, character development, and thematic issues. Jones also offers an alternative critical perspective from which to read each novel—such as feminist literary criticism, New Historicism, Marxist criticism, and Deconstructionism—that gives the reader an alternative viewpoint from which to consider the novel. A complete bibliography of all of John Jakes' work, works about John Jakes, and a listing of reviews of all the novels examined in the book concludes the study.

Slipinski, Adam, and Hermes Escalona. Australian Longhorn Beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) Volume 2. CSIRO Publishing, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9781486304592.

Full text
Abstract:
Longhorn Beetles — Cerambycidae are one of the most easily recognised groups of beetles, a family that worldwide encompasses over 33 000 species in 5200 genera. With over 1400 species classified in 300 genera, this is the sixth largest among 117 beetle families in Australia. These beetles often attack and kill living forest or orchard trees and develop in construction timber (like the European House borer, introduced to WA), causing serious damage. Virtually all Cerambycidae feed on living or dead plant tissues and play a significant role in all terrestrial environments where plants are found. Larvae often utilise damaged or dead trees for their development, and through feeding on rotten wood form an important element of the saproxylic fauna, speeding energy circulation in these habitats. Many species are listed as quarantine pests because of their destructive role to the timber industry. This second of three volumes on Australian Longhorn Beetles covers the taxonomy of genera of the Cerambycinae, with comments on natural history and morphology. One hundred and forty-two Cerambycinae genera are diagnosed and described, an illustrated key to their identification is provided, and images illustrate representatives of genera and of actual type specimens. A full listing of all Australian species with synonymies and bibliographic citations is also included. Recipient of a 2017 Whitley Awards Certificate of Commendation for Taxonomic Zoology

Lagerquist, L. DeAne. The Lutherans. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 1999. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400681004.

Full text
Abstract:
Lutheran churches in the United States have included multiple ethnic cultures since the colonial era and continue to wrestle with increasing internal variety as one component of their identity. By combining the concerns of social history with an awareness for theological themes, this volume explores the history of this family of Lutheran churches and traces the development from the colonial era through the formation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 1988. An introduction details the origins of Lutheranism in the European Reformation and the practices significant to the group's life in the United States. Organized chronologically, subsequent chapters follow the churches' maturation as they form institutions, provide themselves with leaders, and expand their membership and geographic range. Attention is given throughout to the contributions of the laity and women within the context of the Lutherans' continued individual and corporate effort to be both authentically Lutheran and genuinely American. Offering a rich portrayal of the Lutherans' lives and their churches, the social historical approach of this study brings the Lutheran people to the foreground. The dynamic relationship between pietist, orthodox, and critical expressions of the tradition has remained among Lutherans even though they have divided themselves by several factors including ethnicity and confessional stance. Of interest to scholars and researchers of Lutheran history and religion in America, this engaging, multifaceted work balances narrative history with brief biographical essays. A chronological listing of important dates in the development of the Lutheran church is especially helpful.

Abstract:
As more people live longer, the number of persons with the diagnosis of dementia will increase; many will live a long time in their homes, and spend time at a care unit only during the final stage of the disease. It is essential to know more about how persons with dementia adapt to and learn to live with the disease in their everyday life so that they can sustain both relations and identities. One of the most important everyday venues for sharing experiences and negotiating identity is storytelling. When one family member or spouse gradually loses the ability to tell stories and cherish their common history due to Alzheimer’s disease, this may threaten both the experiences of belonging together and the participants’ individual identities. Learning about how persons with dementia can participate in storytelling is important in helping persons with dementia sustain their personhood. This book reviews previous research and introduces basic theoretical concepts as well as empirical findings that help in understanding how people with dementia can tell stories together with others. The book stresses the possibilities that are inherent in collaborative storytelling for sustaining both relations and identities. It also discusses how professionals and healthy relatives can learn to listen and make meaning in stories that otherwise might appear to be meaningless. Listening to and telling stories together with people living with a dementia diagnosis will help to re-imagine dementia—moving away from a notion of persons with dementia being “empty vessels” toward seeing them as collaborative meaning-makers.

Wagner, Lilya. Diversity and Philanthropy. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400641565.

Full text
Abstract:
A “one size fits all” strategy is not effective when it comes to philanthropy and fundraising in today’s diversified environment. This book enables nonprofit leaders, board members, staff, and volunteers of nonprofit organizations to better reach diverse populations and incorporate perspectives that increase success by surveying the cultural context for philanthropic action. Diversity and Philanthropy: Expanding the Circle of Giving is a concise, accessible, and research-backed resource that explains the traditions of philanthropy—an invaluable tool given the proliferation of global nongovernmental organizations that affect every aspect of society in every country. Author Lilya Wagner has worked across the globe as fundraising and nonprofit organizations proliferated in the last 25 years. This book is an outgrowth of her extensive research as well as an accumulation of her professional interactions in the field and real-world knowledge. The book begins with an overview of culture and its influence on generosity and then examines the global increase of attention on diversity in giving. Chapters address specific cultural and ethnic groups; the traditions of their countries of origin; what influences their giving in North America; and characteristics that are inherent in culture, such as religion and attitudes about family. The book concludes with an insightful discussion of how to be a culturally proficient professional. An extensive listing of resources—including research on various aspects and angles of the topic, and surveys on giving both in North America and globally—makes it easy for those who want to pursue related topics in more detail.

Williams, Gareth. The 306. University of Edinburgh, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.2218/ed.9781836450597.

Full text
Abstract:
The 306 is a trilogy of music-theatre works co-created by composer Gareth Williams and writer Oliver Emanuel that explore the stories of the 306 British soldiers executed during World War 1. Many of these 306 men, executed for cowardice, desertion and mutiny are not listed on any official memorials, even after they were conditionally pardoned by the British Government in 2006. This work gathered all of these names for the first time, listing them in song to complete the trilogy. As a part of 14-18 NOW (the UK-wide commemorative cultural program of work from 2016 – 2018) The 306 explored ideas of heroism and protest, by looking at this lesser known, deliberately forgotten, part of our national storyabout the cultural legacy of World War 1. Drawing on primary documents such as letters and telegrams from the front lines, protest songs and documents describing the women’s peace movement in Glasgow, music hall and classical repertoire, as well as contemporary interviews with family members of those executed for cowardice during WW1, the stories and songs were developed continuously from 2013 through to 2018, in residencies, workshops, and rehearsals. 306 Dawn and 306 Day were written for an ensemble of singing actors, and Red Note Ensemble (piano, violin and cello), while 306 Dusk was created for three singing actors, piano, string quartet, and community choir of 40 singers formed in Perth for the production. Throughcomposed across different productions in three consecutive seasons, the work challenges and progresses the role and status of live music in Scottish theatre. The music has been recorded as an album, funded by the Imperial War Museum, and was released by the National Theatre of Scotland in 2020.
