Full text
Abstract:

The use of Linux in embedded systems is steadily growing in popularity. The UC3A is a series of high performance, low power 32-bit microcontrollers aimed at several industrial and commercial applications including PLC, instrumentation, phones, vending machines and more. The main goal of this project was to complete the adaptation of the Linux kernel, compiler and loader software, in order to enable the Linux kernel to load and run applications on this device. In addition, a set of useful applications should be picked, compiled and tested on the target platform to indicate a complete software solution. This master's thesis is a continuation, by the same three students, of the work of a student project during the fall of 2008. In this report we present in detail the findings, challenges, choices and and solutions involved in the working process. During the course of this project, we have successfully adapted the Linux kernel, and a toolchain for generating binaries loadable by Linux. A set of test applications have been compiled and tested on the resulting platform. This project has resulted in the submission of a revised patch series for the U-Boot boot loader, one patch series for Linux, and one for the toolchain. Requirements have been created, and tests for the requirements have been carried out.

Brolin, Jonas, and Mikael Hedegren. "Packet Aggregation in Linux." Thesis, Karlstad University, Division for Information Technology, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-1726.

Full text
Abstract:

Voice over IP (VoIP) traffic in a multi-hop wireless mesh network (WMN) suffers from a large overhead due to mac/IP/UDP/RTP headers and time collisions. A consequence of the large overhead is that only a small number of concurrent VoIP calls can be supported in a WMN[17]. Hop-to-hop packet aggregation can reduce network overhead and increase the capacity. Packet aggregation is a concept which combines several small packets, destined to a common next-hop destination, to one large packet. The goal of this thesis was to implement packet aggregation on a Linux distribution and to increase the number of concurrent VoIP calls. We use as testbed a two-hop WMN with a fixed data rate of 2Mbit/s. Traffic was generated between nodes using MGEN[20] to simulate VoIP behavior. The results from the tests show that the number of supported concurrent flows in the testbed is increased by 135% compared to unaggregated traffic.

Abstract:

Mobile phones are becoming more and more complex in terms of both hardware and software. Linux Mobile, as a term covering both the kernel and its surrounding components that together form the operating system, is said to have the potential to become the de-facto standard operating system for mobile phones and an enabler for advanced future mobile services. This master thesis evaluates key aspects and central mechanisms of the Linux kernel and how it supports its surrounding hardware and software components in a flexible manner. The main work consisted of investigating the necessary kernel subsystems, with focus on the latest major kernel release for as being able to provide the demanded real-time responsiveness for mobile phones. Further, the typical hardware architecture for this form factor is examined and discussed with focus on the important aspects of responsibility, power management, and memory. The combination of the hardware and the flexibility of Linux is demonstrated through the booting process. Both major commercial and open source development platforms are investigated to elaborate on the opportunities of employing Linux as an enabler for advanced mobile services. The attempt of building a cross platform tool chain as a basis for a development platform was carried out with only partial success. It is described with the results achieved and steps planned. Based on the topics discussed and the results achieved the thesis is concluded with a discussion of whether Linux Mobile has the potential to become the de-facto standard mobile operating system, and what challenges and opportunities that are brought along with it.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis compares the impact on disk performance in a GNU/Linux  environmentwith three encryption algorithms: AES,  Serpent and Twofish in three different implementations: DM-crypt, Loop-AES and Truecrypt. For all three algorithms a key length of 256 bits is used. The thesis shows that the least performance impact during data encryption, and thus file writing, is reached by using AES or Twofish encryption implemented in DM-crypt or TrueCrypt. The thesis shows that some data operations with a sufficiently low processor utilization barely affects disk performance at all if encrypted using the optimal implementation and algorithm. It is also discovered that the performance impact during data decryption, or file reading, can be minimized by using the most efficient implementation and algorithm. The best results are met with the AES or Twofish cipher, regardless of implementation. An important conclusion that  is  drawn is that it is hard to determine a superior encryption solution for all purposes. However, by reviewing and examining the collected data from all aspects of disk performance the AES implementation in TrueCrypt is, with small marginals, determined to be the most optimal.

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 23-26, 2000 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California
Since its debut, the Linux operating system has garnered much attention in the software development community. This paper discusses the open source operating system, Linux, and it’s application as the operating system powering a commercial off-the-shelf telemetry processing system. The paper begins by discussing what are the real-time requirements of the operating system in a telemetry processing system. A discussion to the Linux system is then presented. Soft real-time features of Linux are discussed which allow it to meet the telemetry processing requirements. Linux is compared with the more traditional operating system products and points are made as to why open source software is just as capable, if not preferable, of handling mission critical applications. The paper also presents the authors’ view of future of Linux and open source software in the telemetry marketplace. The paper concludes with a summary of products available for Linux that support telemetry processing and the data acquisition environment.

Abstract:
The enormous increase in device connectivity for data and telecom devices places significant challenges on the packet processing techniques used in embedded systems such as IP stacks. Therefore, the traditional packet processing software cannot handle the line rate packet flow even for the most cutting edge devices. A solution to this problem is to allow applications to directly receive packets without passing through the normal kernel stack and drivers i.e. interface directly with the hardware. Two such open source libraries for Linux are PF_RING and Netmap. In addition Freescale has a similar technology called USDPAA. In order to satisfy the first goal of this project, a detailed analysis and evaluation of PF_RING, Netmap and USDPAA has been conducted in order to determine how they compare in relation to a number of criteria such as functionality, support, performance, ease of use, software/ hardware dependencies and project stability etc. Secondly based on the earlier work, a design is proposed that can be used to build and port an application to run on Freescale DPAA based hardware (P4080) on top of USDPAA.

Katz, David Gabriel. "Popcorn Linux: Cross Kernel Process and Thread Migration in a Linux-Based Multikernel." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/52561.

Full text
Abstract:
Proliferation of new computing hardware platforms that support increasing numbers of cores, as well as increasing ISA heterogeneity, is creating opportunity for systems software developers to question existing software architecture. One promising emerging systems architecture is the multikernel, pioneered in Barrelfish OS. The multikernel directly addresses the challenges of high core counts and increased heterogeneity by partitioning the system into multiple independently running kernel instances which cooperate to form a single operating system. Popcorn Linux is an adaptation of the multikernel concept to a Linux environment, melding the multikernel concept with the power and ubiquity of the Linux platform. The goal of the Popcorn Linux project is to provide a Linux-based single-system image environment for heterogeneous hardware. In constructing this environment, Linux must be extended to distribute the plethora of operating system services that it provides across kernel instances. This thesis presents the newly developed Popcorn Linux mechanism for migrating tasks and their address spaces between kernel instances at arbitrary points in their execution. Both process and thread migration is supported, and distributed address spaces are maintained and guaranteed to remain consistent between distributed thread group members running on different kernel instances. Tasks can migrate through an unlimited number of kernel instances, as well as back to previously visited kernel instances. Additionally, the full task life-cycle is supported, allowing migrated tasks to exit and create new children on whichever kernel instance happens to be hosting them. The mechanisms developed were vetted through unit testing, review, and a number of compute-bound benchmarks in a homogeneous x86 64bit environment. Correctness was demonstrated, and performance metrics were acquired. Popcorn Linux performance was shown to be reasonable when compared to SMP Linux. The mechanisms developed are therefore deemed feasible. Scalability was determined to be a function of workload characteristics, where in some cases Popcorn Linux out-scales SMP Linux and in other cases SMP Linux out-scales Popcorn Linux. Optimizations are recommended to reduce the maturity gap between Popcorn Linux and SMP Linux, improving Popcorn Linux performance.

Abstract:
As manufacturers introduce new machines with more cores, more NUMA-like architectures, and more tightly integrated heterogeneous processors, the traditional abstraction of a monolithic OS running on a SMP system is encountering new challenges.  One proposed path forward is the multikernel operating system.  Previous efforts have shown promising results both in scalability and in support for heterogeneity.  However, one effort\'s source code is not freely available (FOS), and the other effort is not self-hosting and does not support a majority of existing applications (Barrelfish).

In this thesis, we present Popcorn, a Linux-based multikernel operating system.  While Popcorn was a group effort, the boot layer code and the memory partitioning code are the author\'s work, and we present them in detail here.  To our knowledge, we are the first to support multiple instances of the Linux kernel on a 64-bit x86 machine and to support more than 4 kernels running simultaneously.

We demonstrate that existing subsystems within Linux can be leveraged to meet the design goals of a multikernel OS.  Taking this approach, we developed a fast inter-kernel network driver and messaging layer.  We demonstrate that the network driver can share a 1 Gbit/s link without degraded performance and that in combination with guest kernels, it meets or exceeds the performance of SMP Linux with an event-based web server.  We evaluate the messaging layer with microbenchmarks and conclude that it performs well given the limitations of current x86-64 hardware.  Finally, we use the messaging layer to provide live process migration between cores.

Abstract:

Abstract:

OSE is a real-time operating system from ENEA. One of the key features in OSE is the signaling interprocess communication (IPC) system. ENEA has also released a similar IPC system called LINX, that is platform independent.

For the purpose of running OSE programs under Linux, I have evaluated two software libraries that are designed to simulate the OSE programming environment. The libraries in question are called SoftApi and OSEPL, where SoftApi was developed by RealTime Logic and modified by me to utilize LINX for interprocess communication, and OSEPL was designed by me to overcome some of the limitations in SoftApi. Neither of those libraries proved to be suited for production systems, but it is deemed possible to implement a similar library that is.

Abstract:
Programming PLC systems is limited by the provided libraries. In contrary, hardware-near programming needs bigger efforts in e. g. initializing the hardware. This work others a foundation to combine advantages of both development sides. Therefore, Portable.NET from the DotGNU project has been used, which is an implementation of CLI, better known as “.NET”. The target system is the PLCcore-5484 microcontroller board, developed by SYS TEC electronic GmbH. Built upon the porting, two variants to use interrupt routines withing the Portabe.NET runtime environment have been analyzed. Finally, the reaction times to occuring interrupt events have been examined and compared

Karlsson, Erik. "Evaluation of Linux Security Frameworks." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Institutionen för datavetenskap, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-36664.

Full text
Abstract:
The number of threats to computers attached to networks continually increases. The focus of preventing security exploits has been on the network, while local exploits has been mostly overlooked. Many security problems in Unix systems stem from the way security is managed; by delegating all security decisions to object owners. There are a number of security frameworks which aim to remedy this in Linux by restricting access to kernel objects, such as files. Ericsson is interested in finding the best possible security frameworks for use with their Linux products. In this thesis, the available security frameworks are evaluated based on criteria given by Ericson. First, the theoretical foundation of computer security is explored to serve for an overview of the security frameworks and their properties. Then specific attributes are refined and their values gathered from each framework. These attributes then serve as a basis for selecting two frameworks for further testing. The selected frameworks are  SELinux  and AppArmor, based on commerical support, ease of integration, and overall protection measures. Tables with the collected attributes are presented for comparison. The frameworks  TOMOYO and SMACK  should have been given more consideration. AppArmor is not useful for the server-centric environment used at Ericsson.

Nedelchev, A. (Aleksandar). "Automating Linux post-mortem debugging." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2018. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201806022428.

Full text
Abstract:
Post-mortem debugging is often the last bastion of debugging solutions. It involves analyzing a raw memory dump of either a portion of memory or the whole memory of the system at an instance of time, much like a photograph. In order to able to read such a memory dump, you have to have knowledge about how the system was built and implemented. Some systems, especially embedded ones, are the ones that can benefit the most from it, due to other solutions being impractical or simply unavailable. The process of post-mortem debugging is cumbersome, as it requires a lot of file operations in order to be executed. The automation of post-mortem debugging can potentially increase its effectiveness greatly. This research was conducted at a large-scale Finnish telecommunications company, which uses embedded Linux devices in its products. The objective of this research was to provide a solution for automating Linux post-mortem debugging, which is better than the current solutions and workings available in the case company. The research method used is the acclaimed design-science research. The research justifies its approach by looking at related work exploring the benefits of automated debugging in general. It also looks at common trends and pitfalls when dealing with highly complex specialized embedded processing environments. The design science artifact, created by this research, was made by combining the justification from the related work, combined with the requirements and processes of the case company environment. The evaluation of the research, both quantitative and qualitative, explores its benefits and drawbacks from multiple points of view. Overall, the implementation of the design science artifact, created by this research, was a success. Its time-saving capabilities were clearly demonstrated, as well as its potential use as a learning tool for new hires and non-technical staff. The main drawback identified was the need of constant maintenance, which is common for applications with great variability in their environment.
