Abstract:
Abstract. The aim of the study was to investigate the occurrence and severity of biotic stress factors, quality and agronomic parameters and its effect on yield and quality character of wheat genotypes. The experiment was conducted at Trakia Agricultural Research Institute, Edirne experimental area, during 2013-2015 cropping years. Grain yield, days of heading, plant height, 1000-kernel weight, test weight, protein ratio, leaf rust, stripe rust, Septoria leaf spot and relationship among these parameters were investigated. Based on a two years data, apart from protein content, other parameters showed significant difference (p<0.05). When compared to the mean yields in both cropping years, the genotypes Gelibolu and BBVD-3, BBVD-4, BBVD-9 genotypes were determined the better-adapted genotypes under target environment. Cultivar Aldane and TCI011322-8 line was detected as very tolerant to leaf rust and stripe rust in both years under the infection of field condition. Aldane had higher protein ratio, 1000-kernel weight and test weight. Grain yield was positively correlated with test weight and negatively correlated with foliar diseases. A highly significant negative correlation was determined between grain yield and plant height in both growing years. Leaf rust and Septoria tritici leaf disease had negative effect on protein ratio in both years. There was a significant positive relation between 1000-kernel weight and test weight. Results of the study indicated that based on biotic stress factors BBVD-6, BBVD-7 and TCI011322-8 are promising lines that need to be improved a bit further.

Lacefield, Kristen. "Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the Guillotine, and Modern Ontological Anxiety." Text Matters, no. 6 (November 23, 2016): 35–52. http://dx.doi.org/10.1515/texmat-2016-0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay begins by examining the rhetorical significance of the guillotine, an important symbol during the Romantic Period. Lacefield argues that the guillotine symbolized a range of modern ontological juxtapositions and antinomies during the period. Moreover, she argues that the guillotine influenced Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein through Giovanni Aldini, a scientist who experimented on guillotined corpses during the French Revolution and inspired Shelley’s characterization of Victor Frankenstein. Given the importance of the guillotine as a powerful metaphor for anxieties emergent during this period, Lacefield employs it as a clue signaling a labyrinth of modern meanings embedded in Shelley’s novel, as well as the films they anticipated. In particular, Lacefield analyzes the significance of the guillotine slice itself—the uneasy, indeterminate line that simultaneously separates and joins categories such as life/death, mind/body, spirit/matter, and nature/technology. Lacefield’s interdisciplinary analysis analyzes motifs of decapitation/dismemberment in Frankenstein and then moves into a discussion of the novel’s exploration of the ontological categories specified above. For example, Frankenstein’s Creature, as a kind of cyborg, exists on the contested theoretical “slice” within a number of antinomies: nature/tech, human/inhuman (alive/dead), matter/spirit, etc. These are interesting juxtapositions that point to tensions within each set of categories, and Lacefield discusses the relevance of such dichotomies for questions of modernity posed by materialist theory and technological innovation. Additionally, she incorporates a discussion of films that fuse Shelley’s themes with appeals to twentieth-century and post-millennium audiences.

Paul, Sharad P. "Melanoma Arising after Imiquimod Use." Case Reports in Medicine 2014 (2014): 1–4. http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2014/267535.

Full text
Abstract:
Imiquimod belongs to the class of 1H-imidazo-[4,5-c]quinolones—drugs originally developed as nucleoside analogues with the aim of finding new potential antiviral agents (Harrison et al., 1988). Indeed, Imiquimod was first released as treatment for genital warts before its actions against skin cancer were studied. Imiquimod is a relatively small sized molecule (Mr = 240.3) and is hydrophobic, allowing it to penetrate the skin epidermal barrier and therefore making it suitable for topical formulations (Gerster et al., 2005). Imiquimod has shown itself effective against skin cancers and precancerous lesions, especially basal cell cancers and actinic keratosis (Salasche et al., 2002, Beutner et al., 1999). There have been reports of Imiquimod being used as topical treatment against cutaneous metastases of melanoma and some authors have reported its use as first-line therapy against melanoma in situ (Smyth et al., 2011, Gagnon, 2011). We report a case of an invasive malignant melanoma arising de novo at the specific site of application of Imiquimod (Aldara cream 5%) for a biopsy-proven superficial BCC. Therefore while Imiquimod has added to our topical armamentarium against skin cancer, care must be exercised in prescribing this treatment and it is especially important to follow up patients regularly.

Abstract:
Plants are a significant reservoir of cytotoxic agents, including compounds with the ability to interfere with multidrug-resistant (MDR) cells. With the aim of finding promising candidates for chemotherapy, 91 native and naturalized plants collected from the central region of Argentina were screened for their cytotoxic effect toward sensitive and MDR P-glycoprotein (P-gp) overexpressing human leukemia cells by means of MTT assays. The ethanol extracts obtained from Aldama tucumanensis, Ambrosia elatior, Baccharis artemisioides, Baccharis coridifolia, Dimerostemma aspilioides, Gaillardia megapotamica, and Vernonanthura nudiflora presented outstanding antiproliferative activity at 50 μg/mL, with inhibitory values from 93 to 100%, when tested on the acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cell line CCRF-CEM and the resistant derivative CEM-ADR5000, while 70–90% inhibition was observed against the chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) cell K562 and its corresponding resistant subline, Lucena 1. Subsequent investigation showed these extracts to possess marked cytotoxicity with IC50 values ranging from 0.37 to 29.44 μg/mL, with most of them being below 7 μg/mL and with ALL cells, including the drug-resistant phenotype, being the most affected. G. megapotamica extract found to be one of the most effective and bioguided fractionation yielded helenalin (1). The sesquiterpene lactone displayed IC50 values of 0.63, 0.19, 0.74, and 0.16 μg/mL against K562, CCRF-CEM, Lucena 1, and CEM/ADR5000, respectively. These results support the potential of these extracts as a source of compounds for treating sensitive and multidrug-resistant leukemia cells and support compound 1 as a lead for developing effective anticancer agents.

Abstract:
Lan honetan jurisprudentzian ezarritako zigor-kontzeptua aztertzen da, eta zera ondorioztatzen: zalantzarik gabe, zigor hutsa da Alderdi Politikoen 6/2002 Lege Organikoak ezartzen duen alderdien debekua. Konstituzio Auzitegiak arau horren izaera zigortzailea ukatzen duen arren, lan honetan argudiatzen da, ordea, errepresiozkoa baino ez dela, eta agerian uzten dira Konstituzio Auzitegiaren 48/2003 Epaiaren eta auzitegi beraren aurreko zenbait epairen arteko kontraesanak. Konstituzio Auzitegiak bis in idem nola aztertzen duen ikertzean, berriz ere egiaztatzen da auzitegi horrek aldatu egiten dituela, justifikaziorik gabe, bis in idem horren osagarriak, ordura arte jurisprudentzian irmoak omen zirenak. This work analyzes the concept of penalty established by the caselaw by deducing that the ban to political parties as regulated by Organic Act 6/2002 on Political Parties, cannot only be understood as a mere penalty. Against the Constitutional Court's line of argument, which denies its punishing character, it provides us with its merely repressive character and the existing contradiction between the Constitutional Court's judgment 78/2003 and its previous rulings. On analyzing the way the Constitutional Court analyzes the concept of non bis in idem, it shows again the unjustified modification done by the Constitutional Court on the components of the bis in idem, which so far seemed to be consolidated by the caselaw.

"K562/GM-CSF vaccination reduces tumor burden, including achieving molecular remissions, in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients (PTS) with residual disease on imatinib mesylate (IM)." Journal of Clinical Oncology 24, no. 18_suppl (June 20, 2006): 6509. http://dx.doi.org/10.1200/jco.2006.24.18_suppl.6509.

Abstract:
6509 Background: Despite high rates of clinical responses to IM, molecular complete responses are rare. The curative potential of allo transplantation and donor lymphocyte infusions underscores CML’s responsiveness to T cell mediated immunity. K562/GM-CSF is a tumor vaccine derived from a CML cell line that expresses several defined CML associated antigens and has been genetically engineered to produce GM-CSF. A pilot vaccination strategy was developed to determine if K562/GM-CSF immunotherapy in combination with IM could enhance T cell reactivity and clinical responses in pts having persistent, measurable disease despite 1 or more years on IM. Methods: Eligibility required pts to have achieved a major cytogenetic response (<35% Ph+ cells) while on a stable dose of IM. Disease burden was measured serially over 12 wks prior to vaccines. 4 vaccines were administered in 3 wk intervals, each consisting of 1 × 108 irradiated K562/GM-CSF cells distributed over 10 sites, with or without topical 5% Aldara (a Toll-like receptor 7 agonist) used as a vaccine adjuvant. Disease burden was measured at 6 wk intervals for 9 mos from the first vaccine and specimens were banked for measurement of immune responses. Results: The trial enrolled 19 pts, all have completed the planned 4 vaccinations and 14 pts have completed all planned disease burden measurements. The median age is 52 (range 28–76) yrs with a median time from dx to enrollment of 57 (range 16–111) mos. Pts were on IM for a median of 37 (13–53) mos prior. 4 of 19 pts had FISH pos as their best previous response (BPR) with 2 becoming FISH neg post-vaccine (1 became PCR neg and 1 achieved a >1 log reduction in disease burden by PCR). Of the 15 pts whose BPR was FISH neg/PCR pos, 4 are now PCR neg post vaccine, 4 experienced a >1 log and 1 had 0.5–0.99 log reduction by PCR. Mean PCR levels for the 19 pts declined btwn pre- and post-vaccine measures (p=0.01). 3 of 5 pts achieving PCR neg remain so beyond 6 months. Only 1 pt progressed having entered the study with a heavy disease burden (30% FISH pos). Conclusions: K562/GM-CSF vaccine appears to improve responses in pts on IM, including achieving complete molecular remissions, despite long durations of previous IM therapy. [Table: see text]

Barkov, Andrei, and Louis Cabri. "Variations of Major and Minor Elements in Pt–Fe Alloy Minerals: A Review and New Observations." Minerals 9, no. 1 (January 4, 2019): 25. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/min9010025.

Full text
Abstract:
Compositional variations of major and minor elements were examined in Pt–Fe alloys from various geological settings and types of deposits, both lode and placer occurrences. They included representatives of layered intrusions, Alaskan-Uralian-(Aldan)-type and alkaline gabbroic complexes, ophiolitic chromitites, and numerous placers from Canada, USA, Russia, and other localities worldwide. Pt–Fe alloy grains in detrital occurrences are notably larger in size, and these are considered to be the result of a special conditions during crystallization such as temperature, pressure, geochemistry or time. In addition, the number of available statistical observations is much greater for the placer occurrences, since they represent the end-product of, in some cases, the weathering of many millions of tonnes of sparsely mineralized bedrock. Typically, platinum-group elements (PGE) present in admixtures (Ir, Rh, and Pd) and minor Cu, Ni are incorporated into a compositional series (Pt, PGE)2–3(Fe, Cu, Ni) in the lode occurrences. Relative Cu enrichment in alloys poor in Pt implies crystallization from relatively fractionated melts at a lower temperature. In contrast to the lode deposits, the distribution of Ir, Rh, and Pd is fairly chaotic in placer Pt–Fe grains. There is no relationship between levels of Ir, Rh, and Pd with the ratio Σ(Pt + PGE):(Fe + Cu + Ni). The compositional series (Pt, PGE)2–3(Fe, Cu, Ni) is not as common in the placer occurrences; nevertheless, minor Cu and Ni show their maximums in members of this series in the placer grains. Global-scale datasets yield a bimodal pattern of distribution in the Pt–Fe diagram, which is likely a reflection of the miscibility gap between the ordered Pt3Fe structure (isoferroplatinum) and the disordered structure of native or ferroan platinum. In the plot Pt versus Fe, there is a linear boundary due to ideal Pt ↔ Fe substitution. Two solid solution series are based on the Ir-for-Pt and Pd-for-Pt substitutions. The incorporation of Ir is not restricted to Pt3Fe–Ir3Fe substitution (isoferroplatinum and chengdeite, plus their disordered modifications). Besides, Ir0 appears to replace Pt0 in the disordered variants of (Pt–Ir)–Fe alloys. There is a good potential for the discovery of a new species with a Pd-dominant composition, (Pd, Pt)3Fe, most likely in association with the alkaline mafic-ultramafic or gabbroic complexes, or the mafic units of layered intrusions. The “field of complicated substitutions” is recognized as a likely reflection of the crystallochemical differences of Pd and Ir, extending along the Ir-Pd axis of the Ir–Pd–Rh diagram. The inferred solid solution extends approximately along the line Ir–(Pd:Rh = 2:3). Minor Pd presumably enters the solid solution via a coupled substitution in combination with the Rh. An Ir-enrichment trend in Pt–Fe alloys typically occurs in the Alaskan-type complexes. The large size of the Pt–Fe nuggets associated with some of these complexes is considered to be related to an ultramafic-mafic pegmatite facies, whereas significant Pd-enrichment is characteristic of gabbroic source-rocks (e.g., Coldwell Complex), resulting in a markedly different trend for the Pt versus Fe (wt.%). However, based on our examination of a large dataset of Pt–Fe alloys from numerous origins, we conclude that they exhibit compositional overlaps that are too large to be useful as reliable index-minerals.

Abstract:
IUPAC is a global, scientific organization that contributes to the worldwide understanding of chemistry and the chemical sciences. It is certainly true that young chemists are shaping our science, and it is important for IUPAC to provide encouragement to our young colleagues. IUPAC accomplishes this goal through the IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists. This prestigious annual prize honors four to five chemists for important and outstanding research carried out during recent Ph.D. studies. The work is mainly judged on the basis of a 1000-word essay which is supported by recommendations from the senior scientist(s) with whom the candidate collaborated. As immediate Past President of IUPAC, I have had the pleasure of chairing an international prize selection committee of eminent chemists with a wide range of expertise in chemistry that adjudicated essays from 36 applicants from 19 countries. Reading these outstanding essays provided a wonderful overview of new trends in chemistry. Due to the large number of excellent candidates, it was not an easy task to pick the winners, but in the end the committee arrived at a unanimous decision and awarded the 2009 IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists to the following five chemists:- Faisal A. Aldaye, McGill University, Montréal, Canada; "Supramolecular DNA nanotechnology: Discrete nanoparticle organization, three dimensional DNA construction, and molecule-mediated DNA self-assembly"- Christopher Bettinger, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA; "Synthesis and microfabrication of elastomeric biomaterials for advanced tissue engineering scaffolds"- Xinliang Feng, Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Mainz, Germany: "C3-symmetric discotic liquid-crystalline materials for molecular electronics: Versatile synthesis and self-organization"- Xing Yi Ling, University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands: "From supramolecular chemistry to nanotechnology: Assembly of 3D nanostructures"- Shengqian Ma, Miami University, Oxford, OH, USA; "Gas adsorption applications of porous metal–organic frameworks"Each winner received a cash prize of USD 1000 and a trip to the 42nd IUPAC World Chemistry Congress, which took place in Glascow, Scotland, 2-7 August, 2009. Here the winners had the opportunity to present their work, which is an important stage of any research project. The prize winners also were invited to submit manuscripts on aspects of their research for publication in Pure and Applied Chemistry (PAC). It is a pleasure to see that all five prize winners have taken advantage of this offer. The result is five refereed papers which contain critical reviews of high quality and appear in PAC.Finally, it is an honor and a pleasure to congratulate each of the winners (and their supervisors) for winning the 2009 IUPAC Prize. It is IUPAC's hope that each of them has been encouraged to continue to do exciting research that will contribute to a bright future for the molecular-based sciences, which are so important for our common future.Bryan R. Abstract:
AbstractTwo pimaranes ent-pimara-8(14),15-dien-19-oic acid (1) and ent-8(14),15-pimaradien-3β-ol (2), isolated from Aldama arenaria, and six semi-synthetic derivatives methyl ester of the ent-pimara-8(14),15-dien-19-oic acid (3), ent-pimara-8(14),15-dien-19-ol (4), acetate of ent-pimara-8(14),15-dien-19-ol (5), ent-pimara-8(14),15-dien-19-ol succinic acid (6), acetate of ent-8(14),15-pimaradien-3β-ol (7), ent-8(14),15-pimaradien-3β-ol succinic acid (8) were evaluated in vitro for their cytotoxic activities to childhood leukemia cell lines and leishmanicidal activity against the parasite Leishmania amazonensis. Among these compounds, 1 to 6 presented moderate cytotoxic activity, with compound 4 being the most active (GI50 of 2.6 µM for the HL60 line) and the derivatives 7 and 8 being inactive. Against the parasite Leishmania amazonensis, the most promising derivative was the acetate of ent-pimara-8(14),15-dien-19-ol (5), with EC50 of 20.1 µM, selectivity index of 14.5, and significant reduction in the parasite load. Pimarane analogues 1, ent-pimara-8(14),15-dien-19-oic acid, and 2, ent-8(14),15-pimaradien-3β-ol, presented different activities, corroborating the application of such molecules as prototypes for the design of other derivatives that have greater cytotoxic or leishmanicidal potential.
