Abstract:
The lagging behind of the Italian economy in the sphere of technologically advanced manufacture represents a significant factor in the debate on the risks of the country's decline. Nevertheless we know relatively little about the diffusion in Italy of companies specialising in information technology. The research presented in this book – the outcome of a national project – reveals how this sector is dominated by small businesses, concentrated in a number of urban areas (the cases studied are Pisa, Florence, Turin, Osimo and Castelfidardo). It emerges that the social networks linking the businessmen with University researchers are crucial to an understanding of the processes of innovation. But what is equally important is the capacity of the collective entities, both public and private, to provide the entire country with the services that are indispensable for the development of enterprise.

Fitzsimons, James, Ian Pulsford, and Geoff Wescott, eds. Linking Australia's Landscapes. CSIRO Publishing, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643107052.

Abstract:
Networks of land managed for conservation across different tenures have rapidly increased in number (and popularity) in Australia over the past two decades. These include iconic large-scale initiatives such as Gondwana Link, the Great Eastern Ranges Initiative, Habitat 141°, and the South Australian NatureLinks, as well as other, landscape-scale approaches such as Biosphere Reserves and Conservation Management Networks. Their aims have been multiple: to protect the integrity and resilience of many Australian ecosystems by maintaining and restoring large-scale natural landscapes and ecosystem processes; to lessen the impacts of fragmentation; to increase the connectivity of habitats to provide for species movement and adaptation as climate changes; and to build community support and involvement in conservation. This book draws out lessons from a variety of established and new connectivity conservation initiatives from around Australia, and is complemented by international examples. Chapters are written by leaders in the field of establishing and operating connectivity networks, as well as key ecological and social scientists and experts in governance. Linking Australia's Landscapes will be an important reference for policy makers, natural resource managers, scientists, and academics and tertiary students dealing with issues in landscape-scale conservation, ecology, conservation biology, environmental policy, planning and management, social sciences, regional development, governance and ecosystem services.

Wójcik, Dariusz. The Global Financial Networks. Edited by Gordon L. Clark, Maryann P. Feldman, Meric S. Gertler, and Dariusz Wójcik. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198755609.013.27.

Abstract:
The chapter outlines the concept of the global financial networks, defined as networks of the financial and business services firms, and their activities linking financial centres, offshore jurisdictions, and the rest of the world. It is a concept that helps to map finance, place it on the map of the world economy, and analyse the latter in a dynamic framework accounting for the forces of globalization and financialization. At the core of the global financial networks lies the global network of securities centres, focused on the creation, distribution, and circulation of securities, which contributed to the recent global financial crisis. Major trends reshaping the global financial networks include the rise of regulation and public finance, technologies connecting investors, borrowers and lenders with each other, and a potential geo-financial shift towards Asia.

Abstract:
This chapter examines prostitution as a socioeconomic phenomenon and discusses its contribution to the spread of sexually transmitted infections. Using online network data from Internet-mediated prostitution in Brazil, it looks at the connectedness of individuals on a review website where clients record intimate details about encounters with sex workers. It begins with an overview of networks, including human sexual networks, along with network properties and measures and the dynamics and structure of a sexual network. It describes general models of disease spreading and introduces a specific methodology for temporal networks, where the infection coevolves with network structure. The chapter shows that the structure of the sexual network is highly clustered within cities but that minimal connections exist across cities. It also finds evidence for local bridges between cities: individual clients who frequent prostitutes nationally. Male tourists play important roles in a potential epidemic by linking otherwise distinct communities.

Schneider, Florian. Digital China’s Hyperlink Networks. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190876791.003.0004.

Abstract:
Chapter 4 continues the analysis of China’s web by discussing what the social and political meanings of hyperlinks might be, how power works in networked structures, and what ‘issue networks’ on the web can tell us about digital ecologies. It also discusses how linking practices work in China’s web spaces, showing how the websites that deal with the two cases of the Nanjing Massacre and the Diaoyu Islands make only limited use of the web’s interactive affordances. An analysis of link-structures and site-maps reveals that issue websites on Sino-Japanese relations resemble traditional archives more than they resemble interactive information hubs. Following this, the chapter provides an analysis of how these issue sites tie into wider digital networks. The main players in these networks are large corporations, state agencies, and Party institutions, which together form a national web space that reflects many of the governance mechanisms that are at work ‘offline’.
