Abstract:
Academic libraries that cancel serials titles typically offer interlibrary loan (ILL) as an alternative means to access these titles. This study examines how serials cancellations affect ILL usage and how reliance on ILL affects patrons’ access to content. By analyzing the number of ILL requests from canceled titles, the authors found that cancellations have a very small effect upon overall ILL usage. With the help of Google Analytics, the authors counted patron requests for link resolver access that were converted to ILL requests. When the link resolver was unable to generate a link to full text, it displayed a message to that effect on a link resolver landing page and presented the patron with a choice to request the title through ILL. Google Analytics recorded traffic to and from the link resolver landing page and generated a data set for this study. Analysis of collected data, including ILLiad records, shows that after patrons identify desired articles that require ILL, they only submit ILL requests 31 percent of the time. This means that for every successful ILL request, there are at least two articles desired that are never requested. Implications for collection development are discussed.

Abstract:
A recent OPAC redesign and implementation of a link resolver at the University of Colorado at Boulder prompted the researchers to question whether the redesign influenced catalog use. Authors evaluated transactional log data between fall of 2005 and spring of 2008. Searches for keyword, title, author, subject, LC call number, and ISSN/ISBN were tracked for each semester during weeks two and three of the semester, a mid-semester sampling period, and finals week. The data show that keyword searches increased slightly following the redesign, and ISSN/ ISBN searches increased dramatically following implementation of the link resolver. Total searches held steady over the course of the study.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to report on a series of “essential audits” implemented by technical services personnel at Georgia Southern University to provide proactive troubleshooting of electronic resources. Design/methodology/approach These “essential audits” include bi-weekly link tests in the library’s A-Z database list, quarterly book and link asset tests in LibGuides and rolling authentication audits of link resolver records. Taken together, these techniques help to reduce access issues before they arise, improving overall provision of access. Findings Since implementing these “essential audits,” Georgia Southern has seen reductions in troubleshooting requests related to database-level authentication and access, as well as reductions in link-level troubleshooting requests originating from the library’s LibGuides platform and article-level troubleshooting requests originating from the link resolver. Practical implications Findings recommend implementation of regular audits pursuant to proactive troubleshooting of electronic resources and improved overall provision of access. Originality/value This case study contributes to the recent literature and discourse on electronic resource access troubleshooting by highlighting simple, proactive auditing techniques.

Full text
Abstract:
The systematic kinematic analysis method for planar link mechanisms based on their unique procedures can clearly show the analysis process. The analysis procedure is expressed by a combination of many kinds of conversion functions proposed as the minimum calculation units for analyzing a part of the mechanism. When it is desired to perform this systematic kinematics analysis for a specific linkage mechanism, expert researchers can accomplish the analysis by searching for the procedure by themselves, however, it is difficult for non-expert users to find the procedure. This paper proposes the automatic procedure extraction algorithm for the systematic kinematic analysis of closed-loop planar link mechanisms. By limiting the types of conversion functions to only geometric calculations that are related to the two-link chain, the analysis procedure can be represented by only one type transformation function, and the procedure extraction algorithm can be described as a algorithm searching computable 2-link chain. The configuration of mechanism is described as the “LJ-matrix”, which shows the relationship of connections between links with pairs. The algorithm consists of four sub-processes, namely, “LJ-matrix generator”, “Solver process”, “Add-link process”, and “Over-constraint resolver”. Inputting the sketch of the mechanism into the proposed algorithm, it automatically extracts unique analysis procedure and generate a kinematic analysis program as a MATLAB code based on it. Several mechanisms are analyzed as examples to show the usefulness of the proposed method.

Abstract:
Computational thinking should be understood as problem-solving thinking, beyond its link to programming. Therefore, it is necessary to address this thought’s structure through its cognitive processes to obtain an operational definition that allows this thought’s pedagogy to be adequately addressed in the classroom, regardless its development source. In this article, five processes inherent to this thought are determined, identifying only those that are always used. These processes are operatively defined from a psychological and a pedagogical perspective. The processes are abstraction, generalization, evaluation, creation of algorithms and decomposition of the problem. The first four processes present an inherent relation to problem-solving that can be verified, while, the last one, decomposition, can be considered not fundamental in problem solving and, therefore, linked to computational thinking. The performed analysis and categorization prove that decomposition is the key and central process of computational thinking. Therefore, computational thinking teaching must always be approached from the decomposition of problems or tasks that allow the simplification of the rest of the processes involved. This should involve different resources such as programming, playing games, problem-solving, or the creation of projects.

A review of: Wakimoto, Jina Choi, David S. Walker, and Katherine S. Dabbour. "The Myths and Realities of SFX in Academic Libraries." The Journal of Academic Librarianship 32.2 (Mar. 2006): 127-36. Objective – To determine how successful the link resolver, SFX, is in meeting the expectations of library users and librarians. Design – Analysis of an online user survey, library staff focus groups, retrospective analysis of system statistics, and test searches. Setting – Two California State University campus libraries in the United States: Northbridge, with over 31,000 students on campus, and San Marcos, with over 7,300 students on campus. Subjects – A total of 453 online survey responses were submitted from library users, 421 from Northbridge and 32 from San Marcos. Twenty librarians took part in the focus groups conducted with library staff consisting of 14 of the 23 librarians from Northbridge (2 from technical services and 12 from public services), and 6 of the 10 San Marcos librarians (3 from technical services and 3 from public services). No further information was provided on the characteristics of the subjects. Methods – An online survey was offered to users of the two campus libraries for a two-week period in May 2004. The survey consisted of 8 questions, 7 fixed response and 1 free text. Survey distribution was enabled via a different mechanism at each campus. The Northbridge library offered the survey to users via a pop-up window each time the SFX service was clicked on, while the San Marcos library presented the survey as a link from the library’s home page. Survey responses from both campuses were combined and analysed together. Focus groups were conducted with librarians from each campus library on April 20th, 21st, and 29th, 2004. Librarians attended focus groups only with others from their own campus. Statistics were gathered from each campus’ local SFX system for the 3-month period from September 14, 2004, to December 14, 2004. Statistics from each campus were combined for analysis. The authors also conducted 224 test searches over the 3-month period from July to September, 2004. Main results – Analysis of the surveys revealed that 80% of users expected to see a full-text article online when they clicked on the SFX button; 20% expected to rarely or never see one. Responses also gave an almost equal split when users were asked if the SFX service met their expectations with 49.5% saying it did and 50.5% saying it did not. The free text survey question asking for comments on the user’s overall opinion of SFX received 174 responses, 26% of which were positive, 40% negative, and 34% mixed. The primary theme expressed in 49% of all comments received was disappointment in not gaining full-text access. Thirty-three percent of other comments were classed as having a general theme, while the remaining 19% of comments regarding the SFX service were categorised with themes of complexity, technical problems, efficiency, or confusion. Results from the librarian focus groups differed between the two campuses. Northbridge librarians had 50% to 85% confidence in the accuracy of SFX and were generally impressed with the service. San Marcos librarians had 60% to 100% confidence that SFX would work, however it was also discovered that several participants had suspicions regarding the accuracy of the system. The SFX usage statistics obtained covered 188,944 individual uses of SFX at both campuses. Statistics showed that 48% of these uses resulted in the user clicking on an option provided, either linking to full-text, catalogue look-up, or inter-library loan form access. Of total occurrences, 39.7% had a link to full-text displayed; this link was accessed 65.2% of the time. Forty-seven percent of SFX uses provided a catalogue link (23.8% of which were accessed) and 37.9% of uses provided an inter-library loan link (8.4% of which were accessed). The test searches revealed anomalies to take into account when analysing the SFX usage statistics, including that about 15% of SFX requests display multiple full-text links. Of the test searches conducted, 22.2% of full-text availability results ended in either technical or accuracy errors and 8.8% of catalogue look-ups produced errors. In those cases where errors did not result there were also significant percentages of instances where the library did not have access to the desired resource: 35.3% of searches correctly indicated that no full text was available, and 57.6% correctly linked to the catalogue to show that the periodical was not held locally. While these are correctly generated system results they are still likely to be seen as unfavourable outcomes by users. Conclusion – The results of the study indicated that both library users’ and librarians’ expectations of SFX were slightly higher than their actual experiences. Librarians’ primary concerns related to the need for more accurate results while library users wanted more full text. It was noted that many complaints associated with SFX were likely to actually be problems with systems that SFX links into rather than the software itself. Although imperfect, SFX, and link resolvers in general, are noted to be a vast improvement on the many separate searches required in the past to locate full text and undoubtedly user expectations and demand for 100% seamless accessibility will grow.

Abstract:
Multiphase drives offer enhanced fault-tolerant capabilities compared with conventional three-phase ones. Their phase redundancy makes them able to continue running in the event of faults (e.g., open/short-circuits) in certain phases. Moreover, their greater number of degrees of freedom permits improving diagnosis and performance, not only under faults affecting individual phases, but also under those affecting the machine/drive as a whole. That is the case of failures in the dc link, resolver/encoder, control unit, cooling system, etc. Accordingly, multiphase drives are becoming remarkable contenders for applications where high reliability is required, such as electric vehicles and standalone/off-shore generation. Actually, the literature on the subject has grown exponentially in recent years. Various review papers have been published, but none of them currently cover the state-of-the-art in a comprehensive and up-to-date fashion. This two-part paper presents an overview concerning fault tolerance in multiphase drives. Hundreds of citations are classified and critically discussed. Although the emphasis is put on fault tolerance, fault detection/diagnosis is also considered to some extent, because of its importance in fault-tolerant drives. The most important recent advances, emerging trends and open challenges are also identified. Part 1 provides a comprehensive survey considering numerous kinds of faults, whereas Part 2 is focused on phase/switch open-circuit failures.

To decrease network link cost is one of the most important pairs for computer network reliability optimization design. In order to make the network cost minimum, the network link medium cost, mathematics model of reliability and resolve algorithm must be considered when it is designed. In the paper, we present an improved genetic algorithm used in optimization calculation for minimizing total link cost and increasing the reliability of the network. Executive procedures of the improved algorithm are described. The simulation results show that improved genetic algorithm provides a method to resolves the network reliability optimization problem which normal approach can not resolve. By using the maneuverable algorithm, optimization process is accelerated, efficiency is increased.

Abstract:
Nonhomologous end-joining (NHEJ) is the major DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair pathway in mammals and resolves the DSBs generated during both V(D)J recombination in developing lymphocytes and class switch recombination (CSR) in antigen-stimulated B cells. In contrast to the absolute requirement for NHEJ to resolve DSBs associated with V(D)J recombination, DSBs associated with CSR can be resolved in NHEJ-deficient cells (albeit at a reduced level) by a poorly defined alternative end-joining (A-EJ) pathway. Deletion of DNA ligase IV (Lig4), a core component of the NHEJ pathway, reduces CSR efficiency in a mouse B-cell line capable of robust cytokine-stimulated CSR in cell culture. Here, we report that CSR levels are not further reduced by deletion of either of the two remaining DNA ligases (Lig1 and nuclear Lig3) in Lig4−/− cells. We conclude that in the absence of Lig4, Lig1, and Lig3 function in a redundant manner in resolving switch region DSBs during CSR.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT High spectral resolution transmission spectroscopy is a powerful tool to characterize exoplanet atmospheres. Especially for hot Jupiters, this technique is highly relevant, due to their high-altitude absorption, e.g. from resonant sodium (Na i) and potassium (K i) lines. We resolve the atmospheric K i absorption on HD189733b with the aim to compare the resolved K i line and previously obtained high-resolution Na i-D line observations with synthetic transmission spectra. The line profiles suggest atmospheric processes leading to a line broadening of the order of ∼10 km/s for the Na i-D lines and only a few km/s for the K i line. The investigation hints that either the atmosphere of HD189733b lacks a significant amount of K i or the alkali lines probe different atmospheric regions with different temperature, which could explain the differences we see in the resolved absorption lines.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine shifts in the volume and complexity of reference questions received at a small liberal arts college following the implementation of a Web-scale discovery service. Design/methodology/approach Researchers used the Warner model of reference classification to review and classify reference questions from the academic year prior to the implementation of EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) and the academic year following EDS implementation to evaluate the change in volume of questions and complexity. Findings Research findings are significant as they document a 34 per cent decline in overall volume of reference activity following the integration of a Web-scale discovery service into the research process. Notably, the question category rated as the highest level of reference complexity (level IV) registered an 18.5 per cent increase in volume, post-EDS implementation. Question levels I-III all saw declines in volume ranging from 45 to 14 per cent. Research limitations/implications Limitations of the study relate to multiple librarians having recorded questions as they were received by reference services and, as a result, some variation in transaction description should be expected. The concurrent deployment of a Web-scale discovery service and an integrated link resolver made delineation of the respective impact of each tool difficult. Practical implications Libraries contemplating the integration of a Web-scale discovery service into the research process will be able to use the research analysis to contemplate service redesign in advance of discovery implementation. The research results support additional training of reference personnel to service higher levels of in-depth inquiries. A redesign of reference services incorporating a tiered reference model using proactive chat with referrals to library faculty for in-depth research consultations is recommended. Originality/value After a literature review of relevant research, the researchers discovered few similar studies. As a result, this analysis will be of significant value to the library profession.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Integral field spectroscopy is well known for providing detailed insight of extended sources thanks to the possibility of handling space resolved spectroscopic information. Simple and straightforward analysis such as single line fitting yields interesting results, although it might miss a more complete picture in many cases. Violent star-forming regions, such as starburst galaxies, display very complex emission line profiles due to multiple kinematic components superposed in the line of sight. We perform a spatially resolved kinematical study of a single Green Pea (GP) galaxy, SDSS J083843.63+385350.5, using a new method for analysing integral field unit observations of emission line spectra. The method considers the presence of multiple components in the emission line profiles and makes use of a statistical indicator to determine the meaningful number of components to fit the observed profiles. We are able to identify three distinct kinematic features throughout the field and discuss their link with a rotating component, a strong outflow, and a turbulent mixing layer. We also derive an updated star formation rate for SDSS J0838 and discuss the link between the observed signatures of a large-scale outflow and of the Lyman continuum leakage detected in GP galaxies.

Diode laser-based two-line atomic fluorescence (TLAF) thermometry applied to flames of combusting wood pellets is demonstrated. The temperature above burning wood pellets placed in the hot product gas of gallium seeded laminar flames is measured. The calibration-free technique provides spatially resolved temperatures in one dimension with sufficient temporal resolution to resolve all combustion stages of a pellet, even in highly sooting flames. The temperature above a burning pellet was found to decrease due to the release of volatile gases and the accuracy and precision of the technique is assessed at flame temperatures.

Abstract:
Abstract Charge exchange (CX) between highly charged ions and neutrals within the geocorona and heliosphere introduces a problematic background for every X-ray observation. For H-like ions the ℓ states within each n shell are degenerate. The majority of CX spectral models rely on calculated n-resolved cross sections, and the distribution of ℓ states is assumed to follow one of several analytical expressions. Laboratory data to validate these distributions at solar wind velocities is not available. Explicitly velocity-dependent calculations of n ℓ-resolved CX cross sections using the time-dependent lattice (TDL) method for Ne10+ incident on atomic H and He at 1–5 keV amu−1 are reported. The cross sections are incorporated into a radiative cascade model, and the influence of n- and n ℓ-resolved cross sections on possibly diagnostic emission line ratios is investigated. Comparisons of the ℓ distribution extracted from the TDL cross sections to the predominantly used analytical distributions reveals a consensus among n and n ℓ-resolved data at solar wind velocities, suggesting a statistical distribution is most appropriate for CX collisions involving atomic H. No consensus is found for atomic He targets, and the ℓ distribution extracted from n ℓ-resolved cross sections appears most appropriate. Open questions related to CX are discussed with emphasis on experimental methods to resolve them. Spectral measurements at an electron beam ion trap facility are planned to benchmark the presented cross section data.

Abstract:
Context. In the disc-mediated accretion scenario for the formation of the most massive stars, high densities and high accretion rates could induce gravitational instabilities in the disc, forcing it to fragment and produce companion objects. Aims. We investigate the effects of inclination and spatial resolution on the observable kinematics and stability of discs in high-mass star formation. Methods. We studied a high-resolution 3D radiation-hydrodynamic simulation that leads to the fragmentation of a massive disc. Using RADMC-3D we produced 1.3 mm continuum and CH3CN line cubes at different inclinations. The model was set to different distances, and synthetic observations were created for ALMA at ~80 mas resolution and NOEMA at ~0.4′′. Results. The synthetic ALMA observations resolve all fragments and their kinematics well. The synthetic NOEMA observations at 800 pc with linear resolution of ~300 au are able to resolve the fragments, while at 2000 pc with linear resolution of ~800 au only a single structure slightly elongated towards the brightest fragment is observed. The position–velocity (PV) plots show the differential rotation of material best in the edge-on views. A discontinuity is seen at a radius of ~250 au, corresponding to the position of the centrifugal barrier. As the observations become less resolved, the inner high-velocity components of the disc become blended with the envelope and the PV plots resemble rigid-body-like rotation. Protostellar mass estimates from PV plots of poorly resolved observations are therefore overestimated. We fit the emission of CH3CN (12K−11K) lines and produce maps of gas temperature with values in the range of 100–300 K. Studying the Toomre stability of the discs, we find low Q values below the critical value for stability against gravitational collapse at the positions of the fragments and in the arms connecting the fragments for the resolved observations. For the poorly resolved observations we find low Q values in the outskirts of the disc. Therefore, although we could not resolve any of the fragments, we are able to predict that the disc is unstable and fragmenting. This conclusion is valid regardless of our knowledge about the inclination of the disc. Conclusions. These synthetic observations reveal the potential and limitations of studying discs in high-mass star formation with current (millimetre) interferometers. While the extremely high spatial resolution of ALMA reveals objects in extraordinary detail, rotational structures and instabilities within accretion discs can also be identified in poorly resolved observations.

Abstract:
Abstract The Crab Pulsar is the prime example of an emitter of giant pulses. These short, very bright pulses are thought to originate near the light cylinder, at ∼1600 km from the pulsar. The pulsar’s location inside the Crab Nebula offers an unusual opportunity to resolve the emission regions, using the nebula, which scatters radio waves, as a lens. We attempt to do this using a sample of 61,998 giant pulses found in coherently combined European VLBI network observations at 18 cm. These were taken at times of relatively strong scattering and hence good effective resolution. From correlations between pulse spectra, we show that the giant pulse emission regions are indeed resolved. We infer apparent diameters of ∼2000 and ∼2400 km for the main and interpulse components, respectively, and show that with these sizes the correlation amplitudes and decorrelation timescales and bandwidths can be understood quantitatively, both in our observations and in previous ones. Using pulse-spectra statistics and correlations between polarizations, we also show that the nebula resolves the nanoshots that comprise individual giant pulses. The implied diameters of ∼1100 km far exceed light-travel-time estimates, suggesting the emitting plasma is moving relativistically, with γ ≃ 104, as inferred previously from drifting bands during the scattering tail of a giant pulse. If so, the emission happens over a region extended along the line of sight by ∼107 km. We conclude that relativistic motion likely is important for producing giant pulses, and may be similarly for other sources of short, bright radio emission, such as fast radio bursts.

Abstract:
The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA)—as part of its dual goals of cleaning up hazardous-waste sites and ensuring that the polluter pays for that cleanup—gives private parties two mutually exclusive causes of action: cost recovery and contribution. Contribution is available in limited circumstances, including if the party has “resolved” its liability with the government. But CERCLA does not define this operative term. Federal courts are split over how the structure of a settlement resolves liability. Several courts follow Bernstein v. Bankert, which held that any conditions precedent and nonadmissions of liability strongly suggest that a party has not yet resolved its liability. The Ninth Circuit’s recent case, ASARCO LLC v. Atlantic Richfield Co., said liability is resolved if the settlement determines the party’s obligations with “certainty and finality.” Bernstein deviates from CERCLA’s text and policy, leading to serious inconsistencies in the interpretation and application of the statute. ASARCO injects uncertainty into the statute, which disincentivizes settlements. When the stakes are the reallocation of billions of dollars and the amelioration of the most notorious environmental disasters, getting it right is paramount. This Note proposes a bright-line rule—liability is resolved when the settlement contains any covenant not to sue, conditional or unconditional—and argues that this reading cleans up many of the issues the current circuit split imparts on the statute.

Abstract:
Fluid-dynamic loading of many solid bodies can be simulated using geometry resolving computational fluid dynamics methods, where the body's shape is resolved in the mesh. In some cases though slender bodies, like ropes or cables, spars, turbine blades, foils and lattice structures would require prohibitively high cell counts, since the geometrical features to be resolve are much smaller than the overall domain. Such bodies are usually made up of generic cross sections like round, square or standardised technical profiles like the famous NACA digit series for which good parametrisations of reaction forces to incoming flow exist. Actuator line methods apply inflow dependent reaction forces to the fluid domain, thus allowing the computationally efficient simulation of slender bodies and have been used extensively, for example in wind and tidal turbine simulations. Beam elements representing slender bodies are standard building blocks in structural finite element models. Combining actuator line theory with a finite element beam model allows the efficient simulation of flexible structures under fluid loads, like turbine blades or nettings used in fish farms. This paper presents an implementation of such a coupled model in OpenFOAM based on the existing turbineFoam actuator line model. The underlying numerical method is detailed and first test cases are provided.

Abstract:
As the technology nodes become smaller and smaller the circuit dies get closer and closer to the edge of the wafer. Defects and issues on the bevel are seen to cause issues such as flaking and blocked plating on the dies at the edge of the wafer. This drastically increases the need for a clean wafer edge as the issues directly translate to yield loss at the end of the line. The wafer edge and backside are shown to have a significant impact on yield as well as process variation [1]. Introducing a dilute HF and SC1 bevel clean at the MOL layer resolves flaking and defect issues found on the bevel. Dispensing it on the backside of the wafer and ensuring that the chemistry is rolled over to the bevel results in the backside of the wafer becoming cleaner and helps resolve overlay issues. All the above stated effects are seen to result in an overall edge gain in edge yield.

Abstract:
The problem of disputes over mutual assets or shared assets and inherited assets as a result of divorce and death is a matter that greatly affects the survival of the family left behind. This often leads to long conflicts. These conflicts sometimes cannot be resolved by the parties themselves, as was the case with one of the families in Tempuran Village, Trimurjo District. They resolve the conflict through mediation outside the court which of course presents a mediator as a neutral party. The formulation of the problem in this study is how to resolve disputes over shared assets and inherited assets in Tempuran Village, Trimurjo District? What is the method of mediation used to resolve joint and inherited property disputes between the wife's and stepfather's children in cases of divorce and death? This type of research is field research (Field Research), while the approach is qualitative with empirical laws that are anthropological social juridical. Data collection procedures were carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation. Primary data comes from interviews, while observation and documentation are secondary data that complements the primary data. The results of this study are that the distribution of joint assets (gono-gini) and inherited assets as a result of divorce is resolved through the kinship line. This family meeting is held to maintain family relations between stepfathers and stepchildren in harmony. The amount of the distribution of assets is in accordance with the agreement that has been mutually decided, namely the amount of distribution of assets back and forth and inherited assets for stepchildren is greater with a total of 2/3% of the existing assets. This is because the child's mother carries more assets than her stepfather. Keywords: Joint Assets, Inherited Assets, Divorced, Mediation Law.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), such as nivolumab and ipilimumab, have drastically changed treatments of advanced melanoma. However, ICI-related enterocolitis is often the most common adverse event, and represents the main reason for ICI discontinuation and mortalities. Here, we report the case of a metastatic melanoma treated with vedolizumab for ICI-induced colitis. A 67-year-old man treated with ipilimumab and nivolumab developed ICI-induced colitis and grade 3 diarrhea refractory to methylprednisolone and infliximab. After his third dose of vedolizumab, oral prednisolone ceased, and the colitis had completely resolved with no recurrence. This case report supports vedolizumab use in treating severe colitis which failed to resolve with first- and second-line immunosuppressive therapy.
