Abstract:
Tiling the Land and Types of Crops in the Province of Verona: a Reading of the Italian-Swiss Atlas Almost a century after the beginning of the linguistic and ethnographic investigation by Paul Scheuermeier and the other collectors, the Linguistic and Ethnographic Atlas of Italy and Southern Switzerland (Sprach- und Sachatlas Italiens und der Südschweiz) still sets a milestone in the study of the Romance linguistic varieties in the Italian peninsula, at the crossroads between dialectology, linguistic geography and ethnography and between “words” and “things” (Wörter und Sachen). This paper, without any claim for completeness, provides a critical reading of some linguistic maps concerning tiling the land and types of crops, taking as a geographical reference the territory of the province of Verona and the measuring/recording points selected by the compilers of the Italian-Swiss Atlas, which are significant from a linguistic point of view. The comparison between the lexical outcomes of the Veronese dialect and those of the other Venetian and Gallo-Italic dialects points out some evidence about the spatial distribution of linguistic facts and the mechanism of onomasiological innovations in a specific portion of the Romance linguistic domain. This operation, in full respect of the methodological pattern of the Italian-Swiss Atlas, comes along with ethnographic issues regarding the cultural and socio-economic background of linguistic phenomena.

Abstract:
Il romanzo d’un maestro by Edmondo De Amicis: preliminary investigations of language and its evolution The paper proposes a linguistic investigation of the first half of Il romanzo d’un maestro by Edmondo De Amicis. From the graphic, phonetic, morphological, lexical and syntactic point of view, a comparison is made between the printed edition from 1900 (the last published during the author’s lifetime), with the first edition from 1890 and an autographed version of the text, conserved at the L. Lagorio Civic Library in Imperia. The article frames the changes that took place within De Amicis’s theory and linguistic practise as well as in the linguistic landscape and in the grammatical and lexicographic reflection of his contemporaries. The linguistic choices of De Amicis have almost always been compared with those of Manzoni’s Quarantana: De Amicis is Manzonian, but not slavish, and with an autonomy of views in the formulation of linguistic-didactic proposals characterized by the use of contemporary Florentine which dissolves into classic Tuscan and, to a limited extent, in the use of the dialect. In Romanzo d’un maestro there is therefore a conciliatory linguistic eclecticism, also recognizable in the pages of Idioma gentile: although the Manzonian model is the preferred one, its openness towards alternative models dampens the most radical implications of the Master’s thought, in agreement with those who recognized the moderate character of De Amicis’s linguistic choices.

- In this paper I explore the consistency of an idea of language structures as both universal in their nature and empirical in their genesis. To this aim, I assume the theory of the parts of speech as a case study. I proceed from a brief historical reconstruction of 20th-century theories of grammatical categories to an analysis of the semantics of the parts of speech, with particular emphasis on Ronald Langacker's philosophy of grammar. Finally I focus on the theory of prepositions in order to explore the relations between language and perception and the function of perceptual schemas at the basis of linguistic categories. Keywords: Linguistic universals, Parts of speech, Perceptual schemas, Cognitive linguistics, Prepositions, Philosophy of grammar.Parole chiave: Universali linguistici, Parti del discorso, Schemi percettivi, Linguistica cognitiva, Preposizioni, Filosofia della grammatica.

Abstract This invited response to a piece by LaPolla, published in issue 39/2 of LTBA, addresses both LaPolla’s misrepresentations of the history of linguistics and his flawed understanding of historical linguistics. The history of linguistic thought with regard to the Tibeto-Burman or Trans-Himalayan language family vs. the Indo-Chinese or “Sino-Tibetan” family tree model is elucidated and juxtaposed against the remarkable robustness of certain ahistorical myths and the persistence of unscientific argumentation by vocal proponents of the Sino-Tibetanist paradigm, such as LaPolla.

This thematic issue of Linguistik online is dedicated to Contrastive linguistics for the language pair Italian-German. The contributions collected here deal with Italian-German language comparison from different points of view. The common feature of all of them is a corpus-oriented approach. Using authentic attestations from different linguistic sources, the linguistic structures of both languages are analysed and compared with each other. The granular and fine-grained comparison enabled the authors to work out interesting results not only in the fields of morphology and syntax, but also for pragmatics, and text and discourse linguistics for both languages, which can be profitably used in foreign language didactics, theoretical linguistics and translation studies.

Evaluating Italian L2 in the plurlingual school. The interpretation of the linguistic data, between perceptions and uses The paper illustrates a study developed from two projects carried out in two different primary school contexts: the first, in which plurilingualism represents a social fact (Autonomous Province of Bolzano); the second, in which plurilingualism constitutes an individual characteristic derivable from a migratory background (Scandicci). The study proceeds from the qualitative analysis of data collected by a sociolinguistic questionnaire - which preceded the administration of an Italian language test - aimed at detecting the linguistic uses and perceptions of the informants on the Italian language. The paper aims at reflecting on the main features of the linguistic landscape of learners placed in a bi-communal bilingualism context or with a migration background. Particular attention will be paid to the potential effects of plurilingual competence in the linguistic performance of learners for whom the Italian language represents a feature of a wider linguistic space.

In this paper, we follow the development of Coseriu’s conceptual tools for variational linguistics during the 1950s. Our starting point is Pisani’s notion of “isogloss”, which Coseriu initially regarded as a core idea for his own approach and yet progressively abandoned in favour of the more structuralist-oriented notion of “functional language”, adopted in the wake of Louis Hjelmslev’s framework, through Leiv Flydal’s mediation. Finally, we speculate about the reasons and the implications of Coseriu’s failing to acknowledge Uriel Weinreich as an important source for variational linguistics.

This article delves into the intricate cognitive and linguistic dimensions of the term “frame” within contemporary linguistics. Originally introduced in artificial intelligence to organize databases, the concept of a frame has evolved to become a pivotal tool in linguistic analysis, enabling the depiction of diverse worldviews inherent to different languages. A frame is conceptualized as a structure comprising nodes (concepts) and connections, functioning akin to gestalt units by integrating sensory and rational elements. Charles Fillmore's definition positions frames as cognitive structures associated with the knowledge represented by words, encompassing both linguistic and extralinguistic information.

Abstract:
The structuralist movement distinguished between the two types of linguistics: internal linguistics and external linguistics. This classification aimed at determining and naming clear distinctions between the factors in which the linguistic determination process is distributed in modern linguistics. There are internal factors, motivated by subjective principles, which are the fixed forces that direct and balance the language system at the same time. There are also external factors, more dynamic factors that direct the language system and control its change. According to the model adopted by the study, the external factors are confined to two groups: one relates to the expelling forces of the language, and the other relates to the attractive forces of the language. The importance of this determination lies in its display of an aspect of the law of equilibrium that governs the development of all languages. There are two opposing tendencies that direct the language in two contrasting paths: one of them tends the language toward disorder, and the other tends to stabilize it. This study adopted the attractive forces of language as its subject, detailing three external factors that had a major impact on steadying and stabilizing the language and in reducing the speed of change and disturbance. These factors were represented in three main institutions: the scientific domain, the cultural domain, and the political domain. The study concluded that these three domains or contexts have a prominent role in forcing speakers to adopt a unified linguistic identity that imposes a kind of stability on the language in use. All of them have contributed, with their hierarchical functions, after each other, in creating a safe environment that preserves the language’s balance and gives it a measure of relative stability in order to enable the language preserving its essential function, which is to remain a valid tool for communication between people.

Abstract:
Introduction. R-linguistics uses the axiomatic method in its approach to modeling the world and language [1]. Axioms define the categories of language, their properties and ways of formation. On this basis, when processing the accumulated data in the form of relations, it is possible to form systems of categories and determine the verbs connecting these categories. A reasonable question arises: if categories (to be such) must satisfy certain axioms, does this requirement apply to verbs as well? The purpose of this article is to deal with this issue.Methodology and sources. The results of the previous parts of the series are used as research tools. The axioms and methods of verb categorization formulated earlier are used to develop the necessary mathematical representations of the verb axiomatics. Results and discussion. The article introduces the axiom for the verbs of the language (the axiom of the verbal cross) and shows that this axiom is related to the categorization axiom (the correctness axiom). Although this connection is not identical, it becomes such with the additional use of the axiom of extensiveness. This relationship made it possible to formulate the fundamental principle of linguistics – the principle of duality.Conclusion. The axiomatics of verbs and categories of a language turns out to be connected, and one determines the other, so that by and large it does not matter which of them is the source of the model of the world and the appearance of language. This unity is formulated as the principle of duality in linguistics. The manifestations of the principle of duality in the language are diverse, but this article focuses on the discussion of the appearance in the language of verbs-processes and adverbs. This transition is considered, starting with obtaining the initial data about the world, to the emergence of ideas about processes and adverbs as a feature system of verbs.

The grand linguistic theories chosen for review in the present study include <em>Structural Linguistics</em>, <em>Nativism</em>, <em>Functional Linguistics</em>, and <em>Cognitive Linguistics</em>. These four linguistics theories have been, and some of them are, paid much more focus in the field of linguistics than other theories. In fact, the areas of SLA research and pedagogy have been highly influenced by these four grand linguistic theories. However, their impacts on these two areas have not been equal and, as a matter of fact, some of linguistic theories have more influenced SLA research while other theories have had implications more for SLA pedagogy. The contributions of the aforementioned grand linguistic theories to SLA research and pedagogy are discussed, along with criticisms against the contributions of each linguistic theory posed by the rival researchers.</p>

Abstract:
The article describes the consideration of functional grammar in the philosophic and linguistic sciences in the causal category, which is one of the new directions in linguistics. The concept of causality originates in the science of general philosophy. It follows the philosophical research that linguistics, including those considered as a special concept of functional grammar, is interpreted as a natural phenomenon. The fact that the study of global linguistics and Kazakh linguistics are formed on the basis of speech activity attracts the attention of scientists to the study in several aspects. It is proved that the causal category attracted the attention of philosophers to the search for motives, causes of the basic concepts of being in life, the reality that induced the interest of linguists. The article focuses on the integration of philosophical and linguistical patterns of the causal concept as a complex body within the framework of the interrelation of semantic levels of all linguistic groups, and not in a narrow sense. The disclosure of the semantic–functional purpose of causality shows that the nature of language and semantic aspects are various. Therefore, considering the activity of causal concepts from the point of view of the theory of the functional-semantic field, it is possible to fully recognize the nature of this category by specifying the paradigm and syntagmatic correlations of all linguistic means and revealing their semantic structure. At the same time, language levels that belong to the causal category can be considered not only grammatically, but also occupying a place in categories that can be expressed through other degrees of language. Therefore, causal progress falls into a philosophical and linguistic classification. In philosophy, it searches for the cause of the world, the creation, of being, in linguistics, it is conceptualized as a functional semantic category expressing the essence and content of this cause through a series of different linguistic operations. It is entrenched that the linguistic techniques that reveal the essence of causal semantics are very diverse, and its paradigm is proposed on the basis of scientific concepts for plain systematization.

Abstract:
Corpus ‘ItaIst’: notes for the development of a linguistic resource for the study of institutional written medial Italian The “ItaIst” corpus is a parallel corpus being developed as part of the PRIN 2020 project “VerbACxSS: on analytical verbs, complexity, synthetic verbs, and simplification. For accessibility” with the aim of creating a linguistic resource consisting of institutional texts written in Italian. This resource will serve to generate other linguistic resources, such as institutional lexicon repertoires and specialized terminologies, to be developed manually, semi-automatically, and automatically according to FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). This contribution presents the initial notes for developing a linguistic resource, connected to the “ItaIst” corpus, consisting of original documents written in Italian within the specific terminological domain of “public urban waste management” related to the information and communication activities of public administrations. The documents were collected according to the “CPI” classification model of institutional texts (Vellutino 2012, 2014, 2018), which distinguishes texts of special institutional languages for legal publicity and administrative transparency from institutional media texts for public communication for the right of civic access, public utility information, the press, and social channels. In this initial phase of the study, a metadata schema with administrative and structural data on the types of institutional texts has been developed and implemented. This schema represents a first level of annotation useful for cataloging institutional texts to monitor the specific linguistic and communicative characteristics of the different textualities of special and media institutional languages. Therefore, the created linguistic resource, corpus “ItaIst-GRU -DdAC,” will be used to extract linguistic information for the following purposes: Extract domain terminology to create linguistic resources such as institutional lexicons and terminology records; Detect the distribution of terms in the different types of special and media institutional texts; Detect and extract complex sentences to be simplified to create a linguistic resource consisting of complex-simple sentence pairs useful for training and testing a machine learning model; Detect the modes of synthesis dependent on simplification processes.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the linguistics of color as an urgent general method of linguistic research into color and as instruments of translation of texts containing terms of color (words with a color component). The problems of such translation are presented in the article against the background of theoretic aspects of linguistics of color as a sphere of contemporary linguistic studies. The linguistics of color is represented as a widely elaborated sphere of linguistic knowledge which has its worked-out notable directions, research institutions and a range of investigating problems. The basic concepts of the linguistics of color are analyzed from the perspective of pragmatics and are embodied into the practice of translation. Linguistics of color’s critical apparatus is considered on the basis of linguistic colorimetry as a collection of particular methods contributing to understanding and translation of texts with color terms. The comprehension of color terms and possibilities of their translation depend on determining their role in the lexical systems of both the source and target languages and their place in the linguistic worldviews. Results. The experience of color terms research concentrated in the linguistics of color and embodied in the linguistic colorimetry’s critical apparatus creates possibilities (on the basis of linguistic colorimetry methods and methods of contrastive analysis) for working out different ways of translating this lexical class. The results of the research consist in disclosure of complicated moments of texts with terms of color, the describing of translation’s problems, the compiling of recommendations as to how to deal with the terms of color and eliminate the translation problems and create a natural linguistic environment in the translated text. Conclusions. The elimination of translation problems can be reached by using critical apparatus of linguistic colorimetry. This apparatus of disclosure of ethnic color priorities and ethnic color inclinations was created in the linguistics of color and concentrated in the linguistic colorimetry. The linguistic colorimetry based on linguistics of color is a useful collection of methods and recommendations. It is an effective mechanism contributing to the practice of understanding and translation of the figurative structure of lexical units with color components.

The article focuses on contemporary trends in contrastive studies. As a point of departure the nature, history and evolution of contrastive linguistics are examined. Contrastive linguistics is viewed in relation to other disciplines such as comparative linguistics, comparative historical linguistics, linguistic typology, theory of translation, and foreign language teaching. Any aspect of language may be covered in cross-linguistic studies which involve a systematic comparison of two or more languages both at micro-linguistic and macro-linguistic level. The current trends are identified in terms of macro-linguistic widening of contrastive analysis which is applied in studies of specialized discourses such as media, political and academic communication. The findings are based on a small-scale research of contrastive studies published in Contrastive Linguistics, the oldest international journal for contrastive linguistics. By conducting quantitative and qualitative analysis and employing a diachronic approach conclusions are drawn about the need for the contrastive approach at macro-level, the type of linguistic phenomena studied and the preferred methods of contrastive analysis within a period of forty-six years. The findings show that there is only a slight increase in macro-linguistic analyses in recent years, but contrastive analysis remains a vibrant area of research with a potential for development at discourse level in particular and implications for intercultural understanding and tolerance.

The first antecedents in the service of the language of the Holy Qur'an were serious about learning, teaching and compilation. They exerted extraordinary efforts that reflected an organized mentality, sincerity and unparalleled dedication which impressed the whole world. These efforts included the linguistic part of the language, its morphology, phonetics and dictionary, and they have in each aspect fruitful studies and precedent and informed opinions. There are several aspects that have contributed to the admission of linguistics into modern Arab culture. Of these, sending Arab scholarships to western universities; conducting university studies and thesis by Arab students in European and American universities; establishing a special section in linguistics in some Arab universities; the emergence of linguistic writings known as modern linguistics; the emergence of Arabic translations of some linguistic articles; the organization of local and international scientific seminars and meetings in the field of linguistics; and the establishment of self-list specialties in general linguistics. However, it is no wonder that others add up to the achievements of the antecedents of theories that deal with linguistic studies, and extract meanings from beyond the linguistic text, all of which is related to the renaissance witnessed by other sciences in the modern era, and which linguists have benefited from in the linguistic field. Some linguists have collected the terms that have emerged from modern linguistic literature, who have varied in their approaches in arranging these terms. I have chosen five of these general linguistic dictionaries and addressed them in description and analysis, indicating the differences amongst them and what distinguishes each from others.

Abstract:
Jan Cygan’s (1927–2021) linguistic thinking laid out in 1976 relied on self-contained form-based structuralism, but it also incorporated elements of emerging context-based structuralism. As such, it was animated by concepts that effectively implied divergent views on the foundational postulate of linguistic arbitrariness underlying structural linguistics. Cygan approached the inner tensions of changing linguistic paradigms in a manner that may be studied as a case in linguistic ethics. This ethic manifests itself in an attitude toward the linguistic fact, as discussed through the lenses of a linguistic model. Today, it is possible to comment on the period of transition in question, falling back on the achievements of cognitive linguistics. Cygan’s stance may be interpreted in terms of the IN-OUT conceptual schema. This interpretation not only highlights the merits of the position emerging from Cygan’s 1976 general linguistics introduction, but it also views this position as a solution to a more fundamental problem facing linguistic ethics today and in the future.

Abstract:
Family language policy: a study of Italo-Lithuanian families in Lithuania This study investigates family language policy (FLP) and linguistic practices of Italo-Lithuanian families in Lithuania. FLP is explicit and/or implicit language planning for language use in the home and among family members which is determined by independent yet interconnected internal and external factors. The data consists of 5 qualitative semi-structured interviews conducted with Italo-Lithuanian families residing in Vilnius. This data then was analysed following the theoretic model of X. Curdt-Christiansen, according to which FLP is influenced by external socio-economic, socio-political, socio-cultural, socio-linguistic factors and internal emotional, identity, cultural factors, child agency and parental impact belief factors. The aim of the study is to analyse the families’ linguistic behaviour, the variations within the internal and external factors that influence the FLP, observe the tendencies of the FLP that occur within this demographic, and recognise the most influential factors. The study shows a greater variation within the internal factors that are based on the parents’ values and beliefs, compared to a much lesser variability within the external factors that depend on the families’ social environment. The FLP was influenced the most by emotional and socio-economic factors as well as parental impact beliefs. Parents that held strong convictions and linguistic opinions had more defined (even if implicit) FLP and were more successful in supporting their children’s bilingual development regardless of the linguistic strategy used

Abstract:
The first generation of linguistic atlases has undergone a dramatic transformation from the paper version, which relied on the field survey of Arabic by gathering information and do basic statistics. and on linguistic maps by representation and analysis, to a second generation in an electronic version based on a language database that is stored, then analyzed, and computerized, based on technological progress and its applications in the field of maps, information systems, and on the other hand on modern linguistic trends, especially computer linguistics, this has created overlap and integration between computer linguistics and digital linguistic atlas, which raises the question of how much computer linguistics contributes to the design and completion of the digital linguistic atlas? What are the areas of contrast between them?

Abstract:
AbstractIn the past few decades, it has extensively been written about corpus linguistics, which has owned its upswing mainly to the use of electronic corpora since the 1960s (Brown Corpus). Meanwhile, an increasing number of fields within general and applied linguistics (e.g. computational linguistics, discourse analysis, contrastive linguistics, diachronic and synchronic linguistics, language teaching and learning research, lexicology and lexicography, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, translation studies) have been using corpus linguistic methods. In linguistic research, the empirical and descriptive character of corpus-based linguistic analysis has also been given an emphasis. Thanks to the digital revolution of the 20th and 21st centuries the creation and provision of digital linguistic corpora is becoming accessible for smaller nations and language communities as well as for scientists. Nowadays, linguistic corpora cannot only be regarded as a tool to support language research and Translation Studies, but they also contribute to the enrichment of cultural diversity. The article focuses on international examples as well as on the most significant Hungarian corpora. The paper also discusses the criteria of corpus creation and several cultural aspects of corpus linguistics.

Abstract:
Contemporary Slovak linguistics has built upon the research tradition arising from the field’s earlier stages of development. Modern linguistic trends active since the 1920s have also influenced Slovak linguistics significantly. Based on the examination of scholarly articles from that period, this paper aims to assemble a selection of information related to the establishment of a new linguistic trend – structuralism – in Slovak linguistics in the context of Czechoslovakia. The cultivation of theoretical discussions in the post-war period – connected with the organization of linguistic research in Slovakia – is observed on the basis of contemporary Slovak and Czech linguistic texts on selected linguistic topics written from the 1930s to the 1970s. Apart from that, publications evaluating the presence of structuralism in Slovak linguistics are also examined (e.g. Anton Popovič, Ľubomír Ďurovič, Ján Kačala, Rudolf Krajčovič and František Štraus). The paper focuses on the beginnings of structuralism in Slovak linguistics, devoting attention to the Bratislava Linguistic Circle (1945) and its activities. Views of neogrammarianism and structuralism are observed, for in Slovak linguistics such views influenced the way the Czechoslovak question was perceived, while also informing research into phonology, dialectology, morphology and syntax, as well as lexis and language culture. The paper also traces the impact of particular views on educational practice.
