This is a survey of comparative linguistics viewed as a set of the related paradigms that embrace comparative historical linguistics, aerial linguistics, linguistic typology and contrastive linguistics. The treatment of the science in question is largely based on the author’s long-standing experience deduced from research projects and from teaching it as a University professor. Placing the aforementioned paradigms under the umbrella concept “comparative linguistics” seems relevant and appropriate due to their sharing the key tool of investigation, i.e., COMPARISON, also due to their providing each other with applicable procedures and principles, as in case of two seemingly closer pairs, comparative historical and aerial areal linguistics, on the one hand, linguistic typology and contrastive linguistics, on the other hand.

Relevance. In Uzbek linguistics, a number of studies have been carried out on automatic translation, the development of the linguistic foundations of the author's corpus, the processing of lexicographic texts and linguistic-statistical analysis. However, the processing of the Uzbek language as the language of the Internet: spelling, automatic processing and translation programs, search programs for various characters, text generation, the linguistic basis of the text corpus and national corpus, the technology of its software is not studied in any monograph. The article discusses such problems as: the transformation of language into the language of the Internet, computer technology, mathematical linguistics, its continuation and the formation and development of computer linguistics, in particular the question of modeling natural languages for artificial intelligence. The Uzbek National Corps plays an important role in enhancing the international status of the Uzbek language.

Abstract:
Cognitive Linguistics started from the 1980s, and it has become a mainstream since the end of the last century and the beginning of this century, which has got widespread attention, with a nickname as the third revolution in linguistic circles after the Saussurean Revolution and the Chomskyean Revolution. According to the dialectical principle of “negation of negation”, theoretical research is always advancing, thus the linguists are beginning to think of the shortcomings of Cognitive Linguistics and new developments in the future. For instance, Dabrowska (2016) pointed out the seven deadly sins of Cognitive Linguistics, which, we think, are overstated and too radical. Cognitive Linguistics has its own historical significance and makes great contributions to the criticism of Saussurean “Linguistic Apriorism” and Chomskyean “Linguistic Nativism”, but Cognitive Linguistics also has its own weaknesses, which are to be exposed in brief in this paper. We have also tried to propose “Embodied-Cognitive Linguistics as a revision in order to emphasize the philosophical views of “materialism” and “humanism” as a basic start in linguistic research.

Abstract:
Precedence as one of the most universal categories in our thinking arouses an unflagging interest in the paradigm of modern humanitarian and social knowledge. The purpose of the article is the proof of the hypothesis about interparadigmality of precedent linguistics as a research field whose object is precedence units. The urgency of the problem is caused by the fact that the study of any manifestation of precedence in linguistic, cognitive, semiotic and cultural projection possesses a high heuristic potential. The scientific novelty consists in the attempt to find similarity in the terms scientifically different in linguo-philosophical meaning - “precedence”, “cross-cultural communication”, “globalization” and adaptation of new terms within precedent linguistics. The article deals with a scientific discussion about the specifics of precedent thought as ontologically predominating in the system of thinking which is realized by precedent units. It leads to the conclusion that any language system goes back to precedent thinking as genetically precedent. It means that precedent language units as the object of a linguistic analysis are initially devoid of research perspective. Nevertheless, a scientific interest to precedent units is explained not only by purely worldview value of precedence phenomena but also by the field of linguistic knowledge expressed by precedent units with the help of certain linguistic mechanisms in the realization of concrete language processes. In this case one can see an opportunity of linking the researched object - precedent units - to the other systems of scientific coordinates. For the analysis of precedent units there is a set of special linguistic methods - the method of precedent, precedent modeling, reconstructions of cognitive structures, transformation, etc. The research resulted in the increase of terms methodologically obligatory for precedent linguistics: a precedent reality, a precedent sentence, a precedent object, etc. Therefore, the following thesis was formulated: the cognitive nature of a precedent is a reproduced meaning which is the basis of lexical, grammatical and other language meanings. It is established that precedent units are semiotic signs of precedent thinking. They have a national and cultural identity and simultaneously cross-cultural universality. In terms of linguistics they also possess a global categorical status.

Abstract:
The most complete explanatory dictionaries of linguistic terminology published in Eastern Slavonic countries are considered in the article. The comparative analysis of index, micro-, macro-, and megastructural characteristics of the most complete Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian dictionaries of linguistic terms (by O.S. Akhmanova, M.G. Bulakhov, and A.A. Zagnitko) is conducted. The forecast is made about perspectives and possible ways of development of Eastern Slavonic explanatory linguistic terminography. The conclusion is substantiated that a much higher informational level of analysis of the metalanguages of Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian linguistics can be reached only if a combined explanatory dictionary of Eastern Slavic linguistic terminology is created by mutual efforts of the linguists, lexicographers and terminologists of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. In its turn, the unresolved problems of the modern Eastern Slavonic explanatory linguistic terminography should include the following issues: 1) there is a clearly insufficient level of institutionalization of the terminography activity in some Eastern Slavonic countries (in Belarus, for example, until now, there are no specialized centers, departments and periodicals whose main purpose would be studying, systematizing and dictionary-coding scientific terminology revealed as a result of analysis of scientific and specialized texts); 2) drafting of the Eastern Slavonic explanatory linguistic terminography products shows certain negative trends (many terminological and encyclopedic dictionaries and reference books lack alphabetic and subject-specific indexes of 12 terms that are much-needed for the readers; a number of terminological dictionaries on linguistics are clearly compilations). In addition, there is a vital need for the Eastern Slavonic linguistic terminologists to cooperate with the subject-specialists in the different branches of modern linguistics as actively as possible to address the topical issues of the current terminography practices. If this closest union of terminologists and subjectspecialists in the different branches of modern linguistics is not be established in the nearest future, then, apparently, terminography and the science of terminology will stop coordinating their professional efforts with the general science of philology soon, and further development of these cross-cutting disciplines will go its own way as this is already going on in some countries of the West.

Abstract:
The interdisciplinary character of the science of language causes great difficulties in bibliographic support in this field. The object of bibliographing in linguistics is not only literature on the language, but also a variety of linguistic resources, which represent a special object to study a branch of linguistics - lexicography. Bibliography of linguistics is the least studied field by specialists among humanitarian bibliographic complexes. The paper first studied the array of domestic bibliographic sources for more than 150 years; the most significant of them are shown. The subject of research is national bibliographic resources in the linguistics field. The objective is to characterize the historical development of the linguistic bibliography in Russia. To achieve this goal we had to solve a number of tasks: identify existing sources for ongoing historical research; to trace the history of forming bibliographic sources, bibliography of bibliographies of linguistics; to form and analyze the body of bibliographic materials; to characterize the problematic areas in the bibliographic software of linguistics. Using the bibliometric analysis it was studied an array of bibliographic products published between 1860 and 2013, the dynamics of bibliographic resources formation was determined, the degree of bibliographic support of some topics and issues in linguistic science and prior directions of their development were revealed. The main results of the study should be considered: 1. The nuclear of fundamental indices on general and applied linguistics is singled out in analyzed literature sources covering the period 1918-1977, as well as in Slavic linguistics for 1825-1981. The complex of current and retrospective bibliographic products was formed and replenished in the country in 1963-1988. 2. The largest share of bibliographic sources in linguistics is presented by book and article bibliography (over 70%), many of which remain bibliographically unrecorded and unused. 3. The following subject areas of linguistics are considered to be bibliographically supported: inter-linguistics, culture of speech and language norms, lexicography, linguistic geography, linguistics regional geography, onomastics. 4. An obvious need to continue the index or database of bibliographic aids in the field of linguistics over the past 50 years is marked. 5. Further development of the linguistics bibliography is impossible to imagine without creating an electronic guide on the bibliographic resources of linguistics, which would reflect the diversity of bibliographical resources and provide their rich information potential for professionals and remote users

Abstract:
Summary Prompted by Western science in late 19th century, Chinese linguistics gradually moved to a new direction after two thousand years of philological tradition centered on rhetoric and textual exegesis. Through the intense efforts of a few scholars in the early twenti-eth century, linguistic study in China became a science and a discipline. Yuen Ren Chao (1892–1982) and Wang Li (1900–1986) were first-generation linguists who led the movement to apply the methodology of modern linguistics to the systematic study of Chinese. This paper investigates the trend setting achievements of these founders of the discipline, and it introduces their biographical and scholarly backgrounds. It also provides a brief history of philology through the lens of Wang Li who was the first historian of Chinese linguistics. Contemporary linguists need both a critical mind to understand the philological legacy of Chinese and an open mind to welcome new interdisciplinary approaches that could produce innovative theories and facilitate the growth of the discipline. Moreover, this paper expands the history of linguistics by introducing linguistic features not found in Indo-European languages, thereby making the history of linguistics more inclusive than it has previously been. Consequently, this paper contributes to a rethinking of the definition of language.

Abstract:
The development of lexical complexity in second language acquisition has received a considerable amount of attention in applied linguistics research. Many studies have examined the role of lexical diversity, sophistication and density as indicators of L2 proficiency. Few studies, though, have considered the development of lexical complexity from an explicitly cross-linguistic perspective. This article reports on an explorative, cross-linguistic study on the development of lexical diversity, sophistication and density in L2 French and English at four levels of linguistic proficiency. Additionally, the study proposes a number of alternative measures tapping into collocational knowledge and lexical sophistication. The analyses were carried out on a cross-sectional, multilingual corpus of L2 French and English consisting of oral narrative data. The results show a similar development of lexical diversity in L2 French and English, but considerably different developmental tendencies in terms of sophistication and density. The concluding sections discuss possible explanations for these differences and consequences for the measurement of linguistic proficiency.

Abstract:
The structuralist movement distinguished between the two types of linguistics: internal linguistics and external linguistics. This classification aimed at determining and naming clear distinctions between the factors in which the linguistic determination process is distributed in modern linguistics. There are internal factors, motivated by subjective principles, which are the fixed forces that direct and balance the language system at the same time. There are also external factors, more dynamic factors that direct the language system and control its change. According to the model adopted by the study, the external factors are confined to two groups: one relates to the expelling forces of the language, and the other relates to the attractive forces of the language. The importance of this determination lies in its display of an aspect of the law of equilibrium that governs the development of all languages. There are two opposing tendencies that direct the language in two contrasting paths: one of them tends the language toward disorder, and the other tends to stabilize it. This study adopted the attractive forces of language as its subject, detailing three external factors that had a major impact on steadying and stabilizing the language and in reducing the speed of change and disturbance. These factors were represented in three main institutions: the scientific domain, the cultural domain, and the political domain. The study concluded that these three domains or contexts have a prominent role in forcing speakers to adopt a unified linguistic identity that imposes a kind of stability on the language in use. All of them have contributed, with their hierarchical functions, after each other, in creating a safe environment that preserves the language’s balance and gives it a measure of relative stability in order to enable the language preserving its essential function, which is to remain a valid tool for communication between people.

Abstract:
In modern linguistics, topical issues of constructing a linguistic color picture and the functioning of color lexemes in the linguistic picture of the world and, in particular, artistic discourse, are being actively developed. Artistic discourse is understood as a communication system, which is a synthesis of specific linguistic forms, information about reality, reflected in a text that is distinguished by its pragmatic content. The pragmatic level of artistic discourse is represented by an individual set of characteristic linguistic means. The most specific linguistic means are coloronyms that represent evaluative and emotional personal meanings that have a certain influencing potential. Color painting in artistic discourse is the most important expressive means, carries a deeply ideological, artistic, and emotional load. Language units with color semantics or coloronyms contribute not only to the creation of visual images but also carry additional information of emotional and expressive properties. The object of the research is the linguistic units denoting color, functioning in the language, mythopoetics, paremias, and literature in the Adyghe language. The subject of the research is the peculiarities of the manifestation and functioning of color painting in the Adyghe language and Adyghe literature, as well as the identification of the specifics of the coloristic embodiment of images in the works of Adyghe authors. The material of the research is based on the linguistic representations of color designations that form the «black-white-red» triad.

A quantitative analysis of linguistic works on the problem of conflict from 1990 to 2022 is carried out. The linguistic features of the study of conflict in dissertations, monographs, articles and textbooks are evaluated. Leading research methods: bibliometric analysis, publication method, classification method. The relevance of the study is related to the objective need to understand conflicts in different areas of scientific knowledge, as well as the need to study the contribution of the philological sciences to the development of modern conflictology. Monitoring of linguistic works on conflict shows that linguistics is beginning to take a strong place in the theory of conflictology. The analysis of bibliographic information allows us to characterize the main directions of the problem of conflict study in linguistics: contradictions in language and speech, conflict of language norms, conceptual essence of the conflict phenomenon, verbalization of the concept CONFLICT, objectification of reality conflicts in texts, language markers of conflict potential, destructive practices of conflict, ways of communication optimization, legal dimension of linguistic conflict, linguistic ways of conflict prevention. Abstract:
The article focuses on contemporary trends in contrastive studies. As a point of departure the nature, history and evolution of contrastive linguistics are examined. Contrastive linguistics is viewed in relation to other disciplines such as comparative linguistics, comparative historical linguistics, linguistic typology, theory of translation, and foreign language teaching. Any aspect of language may be covered in cross-linguistic studies which involve a systematic comparison of two or more languages both at micro-linguistic and macro-linguistic level. The current trends are identified in terms of macro-linguistic widening of contrastive analysis which is applied in studies of specialized discourses such as media, political and academic communication. The findings are based on a small-scale research of contrastive studies published in Contrastive Linguistics, the oldest international journal for contrastive linguistics. By conducting quantitative and qualitative analysis and employing a diachronic approach conclusions are drawn about the need for the contrastive approach at macro-level, the type of linguistic phenomena studied and the preferred methods of contrastive analysis within a period of forty-six years. The findings show that there is only a slight increase in macro-linguistic analyses in recent years, but contrastive analysis remains a vibrant area of research with a potential for development at discourse level in particular and implications for intercultural understanding and tolerance.

Abstract:
Following the No Child Left Behind Act (2001), which mandates standards-based accountability for the academic progress of all students, much attention has been given to integrating language and content instruction for English learners (ELs) in K-12 classrooms in the US. Although TESOL and other state-approved language proficiency standards acknowledge that academic English requires progressive linguistic complexity to tackle progressively complex content, they give no indicators for this progression beyond some generalizations about increased sentential variety. An enlightening characterization of linguistic complexity comes from Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), specifying how grammatical choices actually construct meaning, making a strong case for explicit, proactive instruction, and calling for a systematic analysis of the language our English learners need to master. This paper describes an ongoing project to answer this call by charting a developmental continuum of complexity for school-age English learners. Its preliminary analysis is based on some 90 compositions, collected over the course of a year from more than 30 students in a New England middle school classroom.

Abstract:
Since seminal work in the late ‘80s the general consensus in the literature is that children who are regularly exposed to two languages from birth or soon after can acquire them as largely independent systems. In recent years the focus has shifted from the issue of language differentiation to the degree of interaction between the two systems, and to the factors affecting such cross-linguistic influence. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of current proposals about the determinants and the manifestation of language interaction in young simultaneous bilinguals.

Abstract:
This discussion will focus upon English literacy research which draws upon systemic functional linguistic theory. Over the last ten to fifteen years, a significant number of applied linguists and language educators have emerged in Australia who use systemic functional linguistic theory to address a wide range of research questions. Their effort has been stimulated by the scholarly leadership of Halliday (e.g., 1985a), who took up the Chair of Linguistics at Sydney University in the late 1970s, as well as that of colleagues and former students of his, including Hasan (e.g., Halliday and Hasan 1985) and Martin (e.g., 1985a). The group of scholars who have emerged have contributed to the development of a rich tradition of research and teaching in English literacy in both first and second language contexts. Such a tradition offers the prospect of an educational linguistics of value both to researchers and teachers. More than one tradition of linguistic research might well contribute to the development of an educational linguistics. However, it is the particular claims and contributions of systemic functional linguistic theory that are argued for here.

Abstract:
At the stages of preparing materials for conducting a forensic linguistic examination and in the process of research, problematic issues of a procedural and methodological nature arise, which are debatable due to the lack of regulation and the absence of systematic scientific theoretical research in the field of linguistic examination. The analysis of expert practice indicates the need for further developments in the field of forensic linguistic expertise, based on which the author makes proposals for improving the methods of authorship research and the development of directions for further research in the field of semantic and textual research. The author focuses on the need to carry out developments in the field of linguistic expertise, taking into account not only the current practice of conducting forensic linguistic expertise. Also taking into account the generalization of new literary sources, the number of which is increasing and the data of which are of interest to linguistic expertise from the point of view of analyzing emerging in the field of modern linguistics problems, as well as the socio-political situation in the country. Attention is drawn to the fact that the judicial and investigative authorities appoint linguistic examinations at almost all stages of the consideration of cases/proceedings or the investigation of offenses, and it is also becoming increasingly popular in connection with the appeals of individuals/legal entities. The data of the conducted research can serve as the basis for the creation of new directions of research in the field of forensic linguistic examination and contribute to the development of its theoretical and methodological foundations.

The article describes the directions of linguistic local history work in the Voronezh region, outlines the main ways of development of Voronezh linguistic local history. It has been established that the important areas of linguistic local history work in the 21st century are research, publishing and educational, and linguo-methodological. In the process of analyzing scientific works in the field of Voronezh linguistic local history, the author comes to the conclusion that the leading role in the organization of systematic linguistic local history work in the Voronezh region belongs to the Department of Slavic Philology, the scientific laboratory of Voronezh linguistic local history named after V.I. professor V.I. Sobinnikova and the Voronezh onomastic school under the guidance of Professor G.F. Kovalev (Voronezh State University). The prospects of Voronezh linguistic regional studies are determined by the principles that have become actual in modern linguistics and are associated with the development of polyparadigm studies, the lexicographic description of the language units of the Voronezh region, as well as with a broader study of the literary onomastics of the region. An important long-term task is the publication of the Onomastic Encyclopedia of the Voronezh Region.

Abstract:
The dramatic expansion of modern linguistic research and enhanced accuracy of linguistic analysis have become a reality due to the ability of artificial neural networks not only to learn and adapt, but also carry out automate linguistic analysis, select, modify and compare texts of various types and genres. The purpose of this article and the journal issue as a whole is to present modern areas of research in computational linguistics and linguistic complexology, as well as to define a solid rationale for the new interdisciplinary field, i.e. discourse complexology. The review of trends in computational linguistics focuses on the following aspects of research: applied problems and methods, computational linguistic resources, contribution of theoretical linguistics to computational linguistics, and the use of deep learning neural networks. The special issue also addresses the problem of objective and relative text complexity and its assessment. We focus on the two main approaches to linguistic complexity assessment: “parametric approach” and machine learning. The findings of the studies published in this special issue indicate a major contribution of computational linguistics to discourse complexology, including new algorithms developed to solve discourse complexology problems. The issue outlines the research areas of linguistic complexology and provides a framework to guide its further development including a design of a complexity matrix for texts of various types and genres, refining the list of complexity predictors, validating new complexity criteria, and expanding databases for natural language.

Abstract:
Abstract This essay is a survey of methods applied and topics scrutinized in legal-linguistic studies. It starts with the elucidation of the epistemic interest that led to the emergence and to the subsequent expansion of the mainstream legal-linguistic knowledge that we dispose of today. Thus, the essay focuses upon the development of problem awareness in the emerging legal-linguistic studies as well as upon the results of research that might be perceived as the state of the art in the mainstream legal linguistics. Meanwhile, some methodologically innovative tilts and twists that enrich and inspire contemporary legal linguistics are considered as well. Essentially, this essay traces the conceptual landscape in which the paradigms of legal-linguistic studies came about. This conceptual landscape extends from the research into the isolated words of law and the style used by jurists to the scrutiny of legal texts and legal discourses in all their socio-linguistic complexity. Within this broad frame of reference, many achievements in legal-linguistic studies are mentioned in order to sketch the consequences of processes in which legal-linguistic paradigms take shape. The author concludes upon a vision of legal linguistics called pragmatic legal linguistics as the newest stage in the intellectual enterprise that aims to pierce the language of the law and by so doing to understand law better.
