This is a survey of comparative linguistics viewed as a set of the related paradigms that embrace comparative historical linguistics, aerial linguistics, linguistic typology and contrastive linguistics. The treatment of the science in question is largely based on the author’s long-standing experience deduced from research projects and from teaching it as a University professor. Placing the aforementioned paradigms under the umbrella concept “comparative linguistics” seems relevant and appropriate due to their sharing the key tool of investigation, i.e., COMPARISON, also due to their providing each other with applicable procedures and principles, as in case of two seemingly closer pairs, comparative historical and aerial areal linguistics, on the one hand, linguistic typology and contrastive linguistics, on the other hand.

Relevance. In Uzbek linguistics, a number of studies have been carried out on automatic translation, the development of the linguistic foundations of the author's corpus, the processing of lexicographic texts and linguistic-statistical analysis. However, the processing of the Uzbek language as the language of the Internet: spelling, automatic processing and translation programs, search programs for various characters, text generation, the linguistic basis of the text corpus and national corpus, the technology of its software is not studied in any monograph. The article discusses such problems as: the transformation of language into the language of the Internet, computer technology, mathematical linguistics, its continuation and the formation and development of computer linguistics, in particular the question of modeling natural languages for artificial intelligence. The Uzbek National Corps plays an important role in enhancing the international status of the Uzbek language.

Abstract:
Cognitive Linguistics started from the 1980s, and it has become a mainstream since the end of the last century and the beginning of this century, which has got widespread attention, with a nickname as the third revolution in linguistic circles after the Saussurean Revolution and the Chomskyean Revolution. According to the dialectical principle of “negation of negation”, theoretical research is always advancing, thus the linguists are beginning to think of the shortcomings of Cognitive Linguistics and new developments in the future. For instance, Dabrowska (2016) pointed out the seven deadly sins of Cognitive Linguistics, which, we think, are overstated and too radical. Cognitive Linguistics has its own historical significance and makes great contributions to the criticism of Saussurean “Linguistic Apriorism” and Chomskyean “Linguistic Nativism”, but Cognitive Linguistics also has its own weaknesses, which are to be exposed in brief in this paper. We have also tried to propose “Embodied-Cognitive Linguistics as a revision in order to emphasize the philosophical views of “materialism” and “humanism” as a basic start in linguistic research.

Abstract:
Precedence as one of the most universal categories in our thinking arouses an unflagging interest in the paradigm of modern humanitarian and social knowledge. The purpose of the article is the proof of the hypothesis about interparadigmality of precedent linguistics as a research field whose object is precedence units. The urgency of the problem is caused by the fact that the study of any manifestation of precedence in linguistic, cognitive, semiotic and cultural projection possesses a high heuristic potential. The scientific novelty consists in the attempt to find similarity in the terms scientifically different in linguo-philosophical meaning - “precedence”, “cross-cultural communication”, “globalization” and adaptation of new terms within precedent linguistics. The article deals with a scientific discussion about the specifics of precedent thought as ontologically predominating in the system of thinking which is realized by precedent units. It leads to the conclusion that any language system goes back to precedent thinking as genetically precedent. It means that precedent language units as the object of a linguistic analysis are initially devoid of research perspective. Nevertheless, a scientific interest to precedent units is explained not only by purely worldview value of precedence phenomena but also by the field of linguistic knowledge expressed by precedent units with the help of certain linguistic mechanisms in the realization of concrete language processes. In this case one can see an opportunity of linking the researched object - precedent units - to the other systems of scientific coordinates. For the analysis of precedent units there is a set of special linguistic methods - the method of precedent, precedent modeling, reconstructions of cognitive structures, transformation, etc. The research resulted in the increase of terms methodologically obligatory for precedent linguistics: a precedent reality, a precedent sentence, a precedent object, etc. Therefore, the following thesis was formulated: the cognitive nature of a precedent is a reproduced meaning which is the basis of lexical, grammatical and other language meanings. It is established that precedent units are semiotic signs of precedent thinking. They have a national and cultural identity and simultaneously cross-cultural universality. In terms of linguistics they also possess a global categorical status.

Shcherbin, Vyacheslav. "Achievements and perspectives of development of Eastern Slavonic explanatory linguistic terminography." Terminological Bulletin, no. 4 (2017): 40–53. http://dx.doi.org/10.37919/2221-8807-2017-4-8.

Abstract:
The most complete explanatory dictionaries of linguistic terminology published in Eastern Slavonic countries are considered in the article. The comparative analysis of index, micro-, macro-, and megastructural characteristics of the most complete Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian dictionaries of linguistic terms (by O.S. Akhmanova, M.G. Bulakhov, and A.A. Zagnitko) is conducted. The forecast is made about perspectives and possible ways of development of Eastern Slavonic explanatory linguistic terminography. The conclusion is substantiated that a much higher informational level of analysis of the metalanguages of Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian linguistics can be reached only if a combined explanatory dictionary of Eastern Slavic linguistic terminology is created by mutual efforts of the linguists, lexicographers and terminologists of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. In its turn, the unresolved problems of the modern Eastern Slavonic explanatory linguistic terminography should include the following issues: 1) there is a clearly insufficient level of institutionalization of the terminography activity in some Eastern Slavonic countries (in Belarus, for example, until now, there are no specialized centers, departments and periodicals whose main purpose would be studying, systematizing and dictionary-coding scientific terminology revealed as a result of analysis of scientific and specialized texts); 2) drafting of the Eastern Slavonic explanatory linguistic terminography products shows certain negative trends (many terminological and encyclopedic dictionaries and reference books lack alphabetic and subject-specific indexes of 12 terms that are much-needed for the readers; a number of terminological dictionaries on linguistics are clearly compilations). In addition, there is a vital need for the Eastern Slavonic linguistic terminologists to cooperate with the subject-specialists in the different branches of modern linguistics as actively as possible to address the topical issues of the current terminography practices. If this closest union of terminologists and subjectspecialists in the different branches of modern linguistics is not be established in the nearest future, then, apparently, terminography and the science of terminology will stop coordinating their professional efforts with the general science of philology soon, and further development of these cross-cutting disciplines will go its own way as this is already going on in some countries of the West.

Grove, Nicola Clare. "An analysis of the linguistic skills of signers with learning disabilities." Thesis, Institute of Education (University of London), 1995. http://eprints.ioe.ac.uk/19134/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores patterns of language development in hearing children with severe learning disabilities (moderate to severe intellectual impairments) whose speech is unintelligible, and who rely on manual signs as their primary means of communication. Previous research had suggested that relatively few children reach the stage of producing multisign combinations, and that those who did so were using signs as codes for speech, rather than as an independent route to language acquisition. A series of studies was undertaken to describe the skills of a sample of 10 multi-signing children selected from a survey of 100 schools in the South of England. 'Ihis group were compared with deaf children with learning disabilities who were being educated in a signing environment. They were filmed in three contexts: picture description, conversation and story recall. The data were transcribed using a notation framework devised for British Sign Language. An initial study established criteria for determining utterance boundaries in sign. Subsequent analyses were concerned with describing patterns of semantic relations, lexical categories, word order and grammatical development in both sign and speech. Three alternative models which might account for the children's behaviour were considered:- signs as manual codes for speech; signs as gestures, and signs as elements in a bimodal process of language acquisition. The results indicated that the majority of the hearing children were functioning at a pre-syntactic level in both sign and speech. Some evidence was found to suggest that children may exploit the sign modality to produce contrasts in meaning, and that sign combinations may have independent temporal structure. Both findings are more consistent with the notion of _bimodal language development than the notion of signs as gestures or codes for speech. It was concluded that longitudinal studies of children who are highly sign-dependent are needed, to determine whether they develop syntax and morphology in this modality.

Portman, Daniel. "Walking a linguistic tightrope : learner development in writing job application letters." Thesis, Open University, 2014. http://oro.open.ac.uk/54721/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on tracking the development of 17 tertiary English language learners (ELLs) studying how to write job application letters. The research took place within the context of a Business Writing in English module, in which the pedagogy was informed by a Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach to genre. While much genre-based research in educational settings examines pedagogic practices, Cheng (2006) urges genre researchers to focus on learner development. In this project, learner development in writing job application letters was of interest for two reasons: (a) the letters were new to the learners, in the project's national context and (b) the letters required the complex task of both: demonstration of suitability for jobs and maintenance of appropriate social relations with presumed readers. Within their coursework, the 17 learner-participants wrote three job application letters, in response to three job advertisements, at three points in time. For the 17 participants, demonstration of suitability for the jobs was examined. For three of these participants, a mor.e detailed analysis was carried out, concerning their management of social relations with their presumed readers. Analysis for tracking development was informed by SFL and focussed on the lexicogrammatical and register strata, in relation to the generic staging of a job application letter. Participant interviews and feedback from Human Resources professionals supplemented the linguistic analyses. From the findings, three main conclusions are drawn and presented with reference to Halliday's (2004) language learning triad: (a) 'learning language' - genre development can be seen through the participants' appropriate expansion, organisation, and variation of repertoire; (b) 'learning through language' - genre development can be seen through the participants' 'resemiotisation' (ledema, 2003) of themselves as job applicants; (c) 'learning about language' - genre development can be seen through the participants' demonstration of 'practical' and 'discursive' knowledge (Giddens, 1984). Based on insights from the research, policy and practice implications are offered. Finally, further research directions are suggested.

Atchley, Cindy J. "Exploring Linguistic Challenges and Cultural Competency Development in a Small Multinational Corporation." ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/2518.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2016's global business landscape, the increase in workers moving across borders to find employment accentuates the language and cultural challenges for both employees and organizations. Employees working in a multinational environment need to have an understanding of language and culture to handle the complex nature of professional work in a multinational corporation (MNC). The purpose of this study was to explore what communication competencies employees in a small MNC needed to communicate across multicultural environments in the workplace. A dialectic approach of intercultural communication was used to explore these needs in one small MNC located in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia using English as the corporate language. Data were collected from 9 employees of one data security firm using semistructured interviewing, the data was then coded into NVivo. Using interpretative phenomenology analysis, the themes of understanding, cultural sensitivity, pace, and fitting in emerged. Results of the study indicated a disconnect in the cultural mentality of Americanness versus Arabness in the business environment where societal factors and national identity reflected in how the employees think and act in the workplace. Lack of cultural knowledge in an MNC can impact the financial health of an organization in lost opportunities, reduced productivity, and long-term relationship damage with clients and partners. The results of this study could contribute to positive social change by providing small MNCs with the insight to enhance intercultural communication and intercultural awareness among employees in building a global workforce.

Abstract:
The article deals with the concept of language personality of public relations (PR) undergraduates as well as the process of its terminological awareness, being part of general linguistic competence. This issue is regarded as one of the most important ones, however it has not been in the focus of linguistic attention. The concept in question is based on the anthropocentric approach to modern linguistic research. The study of the undergraduates’ linguistic personality development reflects individual characteristics as well as the professional orientation of the second language thus encompassing a wide range of issues. Within the scope of cognitive linguistics concepts identification that represent the mental space of the language personality of the undergraduates reveal the essence of the phenomenon and stages of its development. The findings testify to the maxim that thought can be understood through language. At the present stage the development of linguistic personality is fostered by the advances of e-learning. The authors come to the conclusion that PR undergraduates should be taught the terminology constituent of the professional language to be successful in the acts of professional communication.

Abstract:
A growing interest in Two-Way Bilingual Immersion (TWBI) programs has led to increased attention to bilingualism, biliteracy, and biculturalism. This article describes the writing development in Spanish and English for 49 kindergarten students in a 50/50 Two-Way Bilingual Immersion program. Over the course of an academic year, the authors collected writing samples to analyze evidence of cross-linguistic resource sharing using a grounded theoretical approach to compare and contrast writing samples to determine patterns of cross-linguistic resource sharing in English and Spanish. The authors identified four patterns: phonological, syntactic, lexical, and metalinguistic awareness. Findings indicated that emergent writers applied similar strategies as older bilingual students, including lexical level code-switching, applied phonological rules of L1 to their respective L2s, and used experiential and content knowledge to write in their second language. These findings have instructional implications for both English Learners and native English speakers as well as for learning from students for program improvement.

Full text
Abstract:
In this article, the authors propose that California’s Seal of Biliteracy for high school seniors can serve as an exemplar to advocate for the continued development of bilingual skills in university, graduate-level students—and counseling students in particular. Citing literature that points to the need for linguistic diversity among counselors in school and community agencies, the authors describe the efforts taken by the Counseling Program in the School of Education at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) in partnership with LMU’s Center for Equity for English Learners to address the need. Their pilot of a Certificate of Bilingual Counseling in Fieldwork (CBC-F) involved the development and testing of proficiency rubrics that adhered to current standards for teaching foreign languages and simultaneously measured professional competencies in counseling. Results of the CBC-F pilot with five female Latina students in the counseling program at LMU in the spring of 2017 appeared promising and were described in detail. These findings have implications for preparing and certifying professionals in other fields with linguistic and cultural competencies in response to current demographic shifts.

Abstract:
This research and policy brief uplifts findings from a 2020 survey of 223 California school district leaders. Findings regarding the preparation of beginning bilingual/dual language educators indicate that leaders rated teachers’ linguistic competencies in two languages as the most important ability, followed by teachers’ understanding of bilingualism and biliteracy development and linguistic pedagogical knowledge. Respondents rated beginning bilingual teachers’ preparation to meet the needs of their districts/schools as “moderately well” (M=3.1 out of 5). The brief concludes by identifying policy recommendations for state and local levels as well as for institutions of higher education policies and practice in this statewide “new ecology of biliteracy”: (1) data collection and reporting on bilingual teacher demographics and authorization; (2) increased quality of fieldwork and clinical experiences for future bilingual teachers; (3) increased funding for bilingual teacher preparation programs to diversity pipelines into bilingual education preparation programs, recruitment, support, and program completion; and (4) differentiated professional development experiences for beginning bilingual teachers including mentoring, learning communities, and cross-departmental teams.

Chornodon, Myroslava. FEAUTURES OF GENDER IN MODERN MASS MEDIA. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.49.11064.

Full text
Abstract:
The article clarifies of gender identity stereotypes in modern media. The main gender stereotypes covered in modern mass media are analyzed and refuted. The model of gender relations in the media is reflected mainly in the stereotypical images of men and woman. The features of the use of gender concepts in modern periodicals for women and men were determined. The most frequently used derivatives of these macroconcepts were identified and analyzed in detail. It has been found that publications for women and men are full of various gender concepts that are used in different contexts. Ingeneral, theanalysisofthe concept-maximums and concept-minimum gender and their characteristics is carried out in the context of gender stereotypes that have been forme dand function in the society, system atizing the a ctual presentations. The study of the gender concept is relevant because it reveals new trends and features of modern gender images. Taking into account the special features of gender-labeled periodicals in general and the practical absence of comprehensive scientific studies of the gender concept in particular, there is a need to supplement Ukrainian science with this topic. Gender psychology, which is served by methods of various sciences, primarily sociological, pedagogical, linguistic, psychological, socio-psychological. Let us pay attention to linguistic and psycholinguistic methods in gender studies. Linguistic methods complement intelligence research tasks, associated with speech, word and text. Psycholinguistic methods used in gender psychology (semantic differential, semantic integral, semantic analysis of words and texts), aimed at studying speech messages, specific mechanisms of origin and perception, functions of speech activity in society, studying the relationship between speech messages and gender properties participants in the communication, to analyze the linguistic development in connection with the general development of the individual. Nowhere in gender practice there is the whole arsenal of psychological methods that allow you to explore psychological peculiarities of a person like observation, experiments, questionnaires, interviews, testing, modeling, etc. The methods of psychological self-diagnostics include: the gender aspect of the own socio-psychological portrait, a gender biography as a variant of the biographical method, aimed at the reconstruction of individual social experience. In the process of writing a gender autobiography, a person can understand the characteristics of his gender identity, as well as ways and means of their formation. Socio-psychological methods of studying gender include the study of socially constructed women’s and men’s roles, relationships and identities, sexual characteristics, psychological characteristics, etc. The use of gender indicators and gender approaches as a means of socio-psychological and sociological analysis broadens the subject boundaries of these disciplines and makes them the subject of study within these disciplines. And also, in the article a combination of concrete-historical, structural-typological, system-functional methods is implemented. Descriptive and comparative methods, method of typology, modeling are used. Also used is a method of content analysis for the study of gender content of modern gender-stamped journals. It was he who allowed quantitatively to identify and explore the features of the gender concept in the pages of periodicals for women and men. A combination of historical, structural-typological, system-functional methods is also implemented in the article. Descriptive and comparative methods, method of typology, modeling are used. A method of content analysis for the study of gender content of modern gender-labeled journals is also used. It allowed to identify and explore the features of the gender concept quantitatively in the periodicals for women and men. The conceptual perception and interpretation of the gender concept «woman», which is highlighted in the modern gender-labeled press in Ukraine, requires the elaboration of the polyfunctionality of gender interpretations, the comprehension of the metaphorical perception of this image and its role and purpose in society. A gendered approach to researching the gender content of contemporary periodicals for women and men. Conceptual analysis of contemporary gender-stamped publications within the gender conceptual sphere allows to identify and correlate the meta-gender and gender concepts that appear in society.

EdTech Hub, EdTech Hub. Minoritised languages, education, and technology: Current practices and future directions in low- and middle-income countries. EdTech Hub, October 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.53832/edtechhub.0127.

Full text
Abstract:
This article explores the current status and future directions of minoritised language education and the use of technology in low- and middle-income countries. Our literature review of available academic sources in multiple languages reveals a lack of evidence on the use of technology in minoritised language education across different countries, especially multilingual contexts with greater linguistic diversity. To understand the issue in greater detail and to offer recommendations informed by current practice, we then conducted interviews and a collaborative workshop with four organisations with relevant EdTech initiatives. The analysis covers facilitating and limiting factors these organisations have encountered, as well as the impact of good practice initiatives on learners and society at large. We conclude by identifying the practical, policy, and research properties in the development of minoritised language education and technology. Keywords: minoritised languages, mother tongue, educational technology, LMIC, multilingualism, language of instruction An output of the EdTech Hub, https://edtechhub.org
