Abstract:
The paper deals with reputation and face treated as emotional and rational evaluation and self-evaluation of a person correlating with their respect and self-respect. The most important features of respect/disrespect reflect its deontic character and focus on the correlation of respect/disrespect and affection/disaffection. The emotional component of this attitude is its basis, whereas the rational component is its addition. The feeling of self-respect is actualized if it may be threatened. The descriptions of reputation usually contain expressed or inferred motivation for such attitude. Reputation may be a masque meant to hide real motives of behavior. The correlation between respect/disrespect and reputation may be presented as an opposition of process Vs result and content Vs form when we describe the attitude to a person, or group, or organization. Reputation is connected with external signs – someone’s good or bad name. A speech act description of reputation and face includes the contradistinction of sincere and formal behavior in a situation of a threat to respect and selfrespect of a person. Conceptualization of face is predominantly determined by the norms of certain communities in a certain epoch.

Abstract:
The article examines the systemic features of the subgenre of “chain letters” – “Advance-fee scam”, which meets the criteria of anonymity, surprise and manipulativeness. The nomination “Advance-fee scam” was fixed for this type of letter thanks to their authors, financial scammers offering the recipients of letters fraudulent financial transactions with the aim of subsequently extorting money. The work revealed that the senders of the advance-fee scam are identified based on the similarity of general features, characteristics and behavior patterns, as a result of which they can be attributed to typified individuals. In the course of the research, the conceptual, figurative and value characteristics of the “financial scammer” type are highlighted. At the conceptual level, the lexeme “scammer” has a rich synonymic range, characterized by expressiveness and negative connotations. The figurative characteristic is determined by the type of male or female at the age of 30 years old. To determine the value attributes of the typed identity of the fraudster, a survey was carried out, which made it possible to identify the attitude of the carriers of today’s linguistic culture to the linguistic personality of the financial scammer studied in the article. In addition, the article notes that the main strategy of fraudsters determines their communicative behavior, in which a series of different verbal means are used to achieve the goal - to obtain material benefits through deception. The material of the study was a collection of authentic chain letters in Russian, English and French, received by the authors in the period from May 2020.

The article establishes the linguacultural gender specifics of the British song slang. All languages are constantly changing, slang invades the vocabulary of people (male and female). Of research, interest is the definition of slang, its origin, the vital need for human communication. The purpose of the study is to identify the gender characteristics of British song slang. Slang as a language system of modern linguistics is considered. In the article, main features and gender characteristics of British slang are described. The authors analyze the song slang of female and male performers and compare the song slang of performers of both sexes. The methods of research are descriptive method, comparative analysis, definitional analysis, lexical and semantic analysis, lexical and grammatical analysis, stylistic analysis, interpretive analysis, quantitative analysis, involving a continuous sample. The material of the study was songs by modern British male and female performers. The theoretical significance of the study is to identify the features of modern British song slang. Research results contribute to the development of lexicology and stylistics of the English language, to contrastive linguistics, linguoculturology. The establishment of the gender specificity of British musical slang contributes to the development of linguistic gender studies. The practical application of the research results is revealed in the possibility of teaching courses in English lexicology, stylistics, and gender linguistics, as well as compiling a linguistic dictionary of modern musical culture.

Abstract:
Modern lexicography is being replenished with dictionaries of a new type, which in their content combine information on the language and culture of a particular nation. The study is focused on the theoretical comprehension of such dictionaries, the identification of their most important characteristics and types based on the analysis of publications dealing with Russian culture. The article presents the analysis of the influential lexicographers’ theoretical works. As a result, the author specifies the definitions of dictionary types and determines the role of culture dictionaries in modern linguistics and language education. The article also distinguishes the subtypes (genres) of the cultural dictionary: a dictionary of concepts, linguocultural, linguistic and cultural dictionaries, a dictionary of cultural literacy. The author concludes that the dictionary of culture is a specific lexicographic genre, reflecting the achievements of modern directions of linguistics such as cultural linguistics, cognitive linguistics, and linguistic conceptology. These dictionaries combine linguistic, cultural and regional information. The dictionary has become not only a linguistic publication, but a book aimed at providing the reader with information on the culture and mentality of the nation. Dictionaries created to describe the cultural component for the purpose of understanding language and culture, their active use, and solving educational problems including problems of cross-cultural communication can be defined as culture dictionaries. As a result of the analysis of dictionaries of Russian culture, the author distinguishes the following genres: linguistic and cultural dictionaries aimed at describing a foreign language environment and culture, focused mainly on a foreign reader, containing information on geographical, social, political, ideological and other aspects of culture-specific concepts in the life of a particular country; dictionaries of cultural concepts, which are often not dictionaries in the traditional sense of the word, but collections of detailed philosophical and cultural articles; dictionaries of cultural literacy, containing information on culture, knowledge of which is necessary for successful communication; linguistic and cultural dictionaries, which popularize cultural information for a general audience and are especially useful for educational purposes.

At the present paper the aspects of linguistic consciousness and communicative behaviour are discussed. Some likeness between the concepts reflected in linguistic consciousness and the scripts reflected in communicative behaviour are described. Valuable components are expressed in the text through inner composition meaning, determined by the stereotypes as well as through the image of the situation (the setup) and the succession of communicative steps - the scenes (the scenario). According to the axiological linguistics communicative behaviour can be represented as a multifayer formation with the following components: meaning, set up, scenario, script. An example of communicative behaviour of lecture participants in the academic discourse is given. The typical actions of participants in the communication are based on the situation and determined by their cultural values.

Il lavoro – che vuole essere un contributo agli studi su lingua italiana, televisione e divulgazione linguistica - si occupa del programma tematico sull’italiano Le parole per dirlo, in onda ogni domenica mattina su Rai 3 dal mese di ottobre 2020, condotto da Noemi Gherrero con la partecipazione dei linguisti Valeria Della Valle e Giuseppe Patota. Le parole per dirlo è al momento in tv l’unica trasmissione interamente dedicata alla lingua italiana, dato significativo tanto più in un contesto televisivo che dedica ai programmi linguistici uno spazio di gran lunga inferiore a quello occupato da altri generi della divulgazione scientifico-culturale. Il lavoro presenta il programma in seno alla programmazione linguistica Rai dagli esordi (metà degli anni ‘50 del ‘900) a oggi e a correlati fattori storico-culturali, sociolinguistici, comunicativi (fasi e caratteri del mezzo televisivo e sua evoluzione tecnologica; missione di servizio pubblico della Rai; la “lingua” come oggetto di informazione culturale), descrive struttura delle puntate e aspetti crossmediali, illustra le strategie della divulgazione e i temi linguistici privilegiati, anche con focus su puntate specifiche, riportate secondo gli usuali criteri di trascrizione del parlato televisivo. Osservazioni su lingua e tecniche divulgative si basano su un totale di 28 ore e 20 minuti di materiali audiovisivi. The essay deals with a thematic programme on the Italian language, Le parole per dirlo, broadcast every Sunday morning on Rai 3 since October 2020. The programme is presented by Noemi Gherrero with the participation of two linguists, prof. Valeria Della Valle and prof. Giuseppe Patota and it is currently the only TV programme entirely dedicated to the Italian language (a very significant fact in a television programming scenario in which programmes about the Italian language are given less space than other scientific and cultural outreach programmes). The work presents the programme within the Rai linguistic programming from its beginnings (mid 1950s) to the present day and takes into consideration historical-cultural, sociolinguistic and communicative factors (phases and characteristics of the television medium and its technological evolution; Rai's public service mission; "language" as an object of cultural information). It describes then the structure of the episodes and cross-media aspects, the strategies of dissemination and the discussed linguistic themes: the analysis focuses on specific episodes, reported according to the usual criteria of transcription of television speech. Observations on language and dissemination techniques are based on a total of 28 hours and 20 minutes of audiovisual materials.

The aim of this work is determined by the importance of expanding and advancing in the development of conceptual directions within the framework of political linguistics, cultural linguistics, and consideration of linguistic characteristics based on the material of Kazakhstan political Internet comments, which has a greater effect on the consciousness of the people. It is implied in this statement there is an idea of ​​the most important characteristics of representatives of the population – a parameter that influences the development of political discourse in conceptual and expressive aspects. The results of the generalized analysis serve as a basis for deepening such studies and disseminating them to other languages. The conducted research Internet commentary makes a certain contribution to the general theory of modern linguistics, practical lexicography. Evaluating different approaches to discourse also pushes this area forward methodologically. Research shows that well-known discourse centers are organizing a networked public to conduct a survey.

Social media enable messages to be exchanged beyond geographic constraints. Some of the messages could be shared and forwarded by people with different cultural backgrounds across different geographical regions. Studying the content of messages that can reach diverse populations is important for practices such as movement propagation and global marketing. Existing studies mainly investigated the characteristics of messages that are popular, i.e., shared or forwarded by more users. As the diffusion of information is prone to be echoed inside certain geographical and linguistic boundaries, popular messages are not always to be shared and spread across geographical and linguistic boundaries. We investigated the linguistic characteristics of social media messages that can reach and be disseminated by people across nations, and across geographic and linguistic boundaries in the MeToo movement. Specifically, we analyze the diffusion paths of messages according to the geolocation of tweets and conducted statistical analysis to compare the linguistic characteristic of tweets that spread across geographical or linguistic boundaries with those that do not. We focus on the linguistic characteristics from three aspects: ‘emotions’, ‘social relations’, and ‘economics, politics, and religion’. Our findings reveal that popular messages tend to contain more negative emotions, however, messages with negative emotions are unlikely to be disseminated across geographical or linguistic boundaries. On the other hand, messages on economic topics or non-adults’ issues are more probable to be disseminated universally. The findings provide insights on the content that is more probable to be shared and disseminated by people with different cultural backgrounds across geographical regions.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the binding of overt and null subject pronouns in second language (L2) acquisition and first language (L1) attrition of Turkish. The aim is to provide a comparative investigation of language transfer effects in the ultimate state of the L2 and L1 grammar. More specifically, it examines transfer effects from English L1 and English L2 into the grammars of Turkish L2 and Turkish L1, respectively.
In this thesis, I propose that the Subset Condition (Berwick, 1985; Manzini & Wexler, 1987) can account for transfer phenomena observed in both L2 acquisition and L1 attrition. I argue that the subset relation that holds between the L1 and the L2 can be a predictor for the extent and duration of cross-linguistic transfer in L2 acquisition and L1 attrition. In other words, whether or not a particular property will resist L2 acquisition and undergo L1 attrition can be determined by looking at the subset relationship between the L1 and the L2 with respect to that property.
The prediction is that in configurations where the 'influencing language' (L1 in L2 acquisition and L2 in L1 attrition) is the superset of the 'affected language' (L2 in L2 acquisition and L1 in L1 attrition), L1 transfer effect will persist in L2 acquisition and we will see more signs of L2 transfer into the L1 grammar, resulting in more attrition effects.
Pronominal binding is chosen to investigate such cross-linguistic transfer effects. English and Turkish differ with respect to governing domains and types of pronominals present in two languages. Turkish, being a pro-drop language, allows null subject pronouns in main and embedded clauses. It also has a special type of anaphoric pronominal, kendisi, for which English has no corresponding form.
Two experiments were conducted to test L2 acquisition and L1 attrition of binding properties of Turkish overt and null subject pronouns under the influence of English. Participants included native English-speakers living in Turkey (end-state L2 Turkish speakers) and native Turkish-speakers living in North America (end-state L2 English speakers). Overall, results obtained from the two studies reveal cross-linguistic transfer effects in the manner predicted. In particular, properties of English overt pronouns (e.g., him/her) are transferred onto the overt Turkish pronoun o in L2 acquisition and in attrition, whereas properties of the Turkish null pronoun and the anaphoric pronominal kendisi are unaffected by English.

Bakgrund: I ett alltmer mångkulturellt samhälle blir det märkbart hur förutsättningarna för en god hälsa skiljer sig mellan olika samhällsgrupper. Hälso- och sjukvården har som uppgift att främja hälsan hos alla patienter oavsett bakgrund. Detta ställer nya krav på den svenska sjukvården, då en mångkulturell utveckling leder till fler transkulturella möten i vården. Dessa möten innehåller ofta hinder som kan vara svåra att överbrygga, vilket kräver en kunskap om vilka faktorer som påverkar mötet och en medvetenhet om kulturens betydelse hos sjuksköterskan.   Syfte: Syftet med studien var att utifrån ett sjuksköterskeperspektiv belysa de faktorer som påverkar vårdrelationen i transkulturella möten.   Metod: En litteraturstudie baserad på 13 vetenskapliga artiklar var av nio kvalitativa och fyra kvantitativa. Resultatet analyserades och sammanställdes genom ett kvalitativt analysinnehåll.  Som teoretiska utgångspunkter användes en definition av kulturell kompetens och vårdrelation.   Resultat: Resultatet visar att kommunikation och språkbarriärer utgör det största hindret i den transkulturella omvårdnaden. Användning av tolk som hjälpmedel visade sig ha både för- och nackdelar. Organisatoriska hinder försvårade förutsättningen för en fungerande vårdrelation och kulturella skillnader visade sig kunna leda till konflikter i vårdmötet. Sjuksköterskan använde sig av olika strategier som hjälpmedel vilket illustrerade en viss kulturell medvetenhet, medan bristen på förståelse ledde till generaliseringar som resulterade i en diskriminering av patienter. Många sjuksköterskor saknar utbildning i transkulturell omvårdnad, vilket efterfrågades av merparten. De sjuksköterskor som genomgått en utbildning i kulturell kompetens uppgav positiva effekter som lett till en ökad medvetenhet.   Diskussion: Sjuksköterskan behöver bli medveten om de negativa konsekvenser som en bristande kommunikation och kulturella konflikter har för etablerandet av en vårdrelation till patienten. Enligt de dokument som styr professionen har sjuksköterskan en skyldighet att skapa de bästa förutsättningarna för en god omsorg om patienten. Okunskap och oförståelse leder till en diskriminering av patienten som inte hör hemma i vården. Utbildning i kulturell kompetens har bevisligen positiva effekter för att motverka generaliseringar och öka medvetenheten hos sjuksköterskan. För att främja en kulturell medvetenhet bör mer fokus läggas på dessa frågor i sjuksköterskans grund – och fortutbildning.

Como uma forma especial da linguagem, os provérbios desempenham um papel importante na nossa vida quotidiana. Eles não só transmitem conhecimentos coletivos e ideias filosóficas, obtidos pela experiência de vida e pela produção dos que nos antecederam, como são também uma cristalização da sabedoria. No contexto do Mestrado em Estudos Interculturais Português-Chinês, tive a oportunidade de aprofundar os meus conhecimentos sobre os provérbios em português e chinês. Ao longo da leitura e exploração dos documentos referentes aos provérbios em português e chinês, tendo em conta que no universo dos provérbios os que se referem a animais são mais comuns e têm uma relação mais próxima com a vida do dia a dia da população, o trabalho fará incidir o foco no estudo contrastivo sobre os provérbios com animais em português e chinês, nomeadamente a investigação das diferenças e semelhanças linguísticas e culturais neles refletidas, com o objetivo de obviar a “confusão” e as interpretações menos adequadas, aumentar a eficácia da comunicação e melhorar a capacidade de utilização da língua.
As a special form of language, proverbs play an important role in our daily lives. They not only convey collective knowledge and philosophical ideas obtained by the experience of life and the production of those that preceded us, but they are also a crystallization of wisdom. In the context of the Master in Intercultural Studies Portuguese-Chinese, I had the opportunity to deepen my knowledge about the proverbs in Portuguese and Chinese. Throughout the reading and exploration of the documents referring to the proverbs in Portuguese and Chinese, taking into account that in the universe of proverbs the ones that refer to animals are more common and have a closer relation with the daily life of the population, the focus will be on the contrastive study of Chinese and Portuguese proverbs with animals, namely the investigation of differences and similarities in the linguistic and cultural aspects reflected in them, in order to avoid confusion and less adequate interpretations, improve the skills of communication and the ability to use the language.

This research stems from the need of the Italian Cultural Institute to map the institutions involved in teaching Italian in the area considered and to analyse the quality of the teaching and learning process of the Italian language. The objectives are multiple and linked to the importance of finding the causes that slow the growth of the study of Italian in Japanese Kansai. Therefore, the first part of this action research will outline the cultural and linguistic education coordinates that characterize the Japanese context; in the second part, the research data will be interpreted in order to trace new methodological development trajectories to increase the quality of the Italian teaching process in Kansai.Part 1 This part focuses on the situation of foreign language teaching in Japan. It also describes the strategies to promote the teaching of the Italian language in Japan from 1980 to now. 1 Modern Language Policy in Japan Between Past and Present This first chapter describes linguistic policy for the promotion of foreign languages in Japan by the Ministry of Education (MEXT). 2 Japanese Educational System Focus of this chapter are the cultural, pedagogical and linguistic education characteristics of the context under investigation. 3 Teaching Italian Language in Japan The purpose of this chapter is to outline the general frame of the spreading of the Italian cultural model in a traditional Japanese context. Part 2In the second part the action research and the training project design are described. 4 The Action-Research Project This chapter describes the overall design of the research and the research questions that inspired an investigation in the context under study. The monograph is devoted to the problem of recreating the linguistic-ethnic unity of the Old Russian anthroponymic and toponymic systems, the discovery of direct connections between the proper name and mental landmarks. The monograph provides a comprehensive description of the onomasticon of ancient Russian monuments of writing in line with comparative historical linguistics, taking into account the encyclopedic, ethnolinguistic and etymological characteristics of proper names. The system and structure of the onomastic space of monuments of ecclesiastical and secular content of the XI-XIII centuries are investigated, conceptual approaches to their description are proposed. The study of the functions of proper names, their morphemics and semantics allowed us to establish the national and cultural specifics of the Old Russian onomastic vocabulary, to determine the prospects for its evolution, as well as the formation of the modern Russian anthroponymic system. Modeling of the Old Russian onomastic space both in the field of anthroponymy and toponymy takes into account the connection of proper names with contextual usage. The participation of nominal signs in the formation of the space of written and artistic texts of the era of the Kievan state is based on the attachment of certain proper names to texts of a religious and secular nature. Nomination in the space of proper names is considered in the monograph not only as a process of activity of a creative nature, but also as a means of onymic word production in the older era. It is addressed to specialists in historical lexicology and onomastics, language history, teachers of literature, local historians.

The emergence of the Safavid Empire in the early sixteenth century marked a significant change in the geopolitics of the Middle East. This momentous change coincided with the widening of Ottoman expansion eastward and the exploration by European powers, especially by Venice, of the possibilities of forming alliances against the Ottomans with the involvement of the Safavids. Thus, Ottoman threat and commercial interests contributed to the emergence and development of diplomatic, cultural, and trade relations between the Republic of Venice and the Safavid Empire, which lasted until the end of the seventeenth century. Drawing on the documents from the Venetian State Archives and other contemporary sources, this book focuses mainly on some aspects of Safavid diplomacy, including the language of the Safavid polity, the role of European subjects as interpreters for the shahs, material and visual characteristics of Safavid diplomatic letters to Venice, the attitude of the Safavids towards resident diplomacy, the reception of the European envoys in the Safavid court and Europeans’ perception of Safavid diplomatic practices, as well as the characteristics of the Safavid embassies to Venice. We have tried to explain the role of Turkish as a language of diplomacy and communication in Safavid-Venetian encounters. We have also attempted to explore briefly how the Venetians distinguished Safavid subjects according to their ethno-linguistic affiliations. Finally, we examine the Ottoman factor in Safavid-Venetian relations in order to establish to what extent, if any, the Ottomans had an impact on the overall character of Safavid-Venetian relations.

This essay focuses on the ‘voice’ as it sounds in a specific type of recordings. This recordings always reproduce a poet performing a poem of his/her by reading it aloud. Nowadays this kind of recordings are quite common on Internet, while before the ’90 digital turn it was possible to find them only in specific collection of poetry books that came with a music cassette or a CD. These cultural objects, as other and more ancient analogic sources, were quite expensive to produce and acquire. However, all of them contain this same type of recoding which share the same characteristic: the author’s voice reading aloud a poem of his/her. By bearing in mind this specific cultural objet and its characteristics, this study aims to analyse the «intermedial relation» that occur between a poetic text and its recorded version with the author’s voice. This «intermedial relation» occurs especially when these two elements (text and voice) are juxtaposed and experienced simultaneously. In fact, some online archives dedicated to this type of recording present this configuration forcing the user to receive both text and voice in the same space and at the same time This specific configuration not just activates the intermedial relation, but also hybridises the status of both the reader, who become a «reader-listener», and the author, who become a «author-reader». By using an interdisciplinary approach that combines philosophy, psychology, anthropology, linguistics and cognitive sciences, the essay propose a method to «critically listening» some Spanish poets’ way of vocalising their poems. In addition, the book present Phonodia web archive built at the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice as a paradigmatic answer to editorial problems related to online multimedia archives dedicated to these specific recordings. An extent part of the book is dedicated to the twenty-eight interviews made to the Spanish contemporary poets who became part of Phonodia and agreed in discussing about their personal relation to ‘voice’ and how this element works in their creative practice.

AbstractAcknowledging the critical nature of EMI lecturers as bi- or multilinguals, this Chapter continues the investigation into cross-linguistic influence now turning attention to its pragmatic features. It focuses on the Chinese lecturers’ metalinguistic skills, particularly the L1 (Chinese) to L2 (English) transfer in their use of pragmatic markers (PMs). The investigation is informed by current studies arguing that highly proficient L2 language users do not necessarily make the most effective teachers, and the capacity to employ pragmatic strategies is essential to engage students’ learning; and that from amongst all the competencies in which lecturers should be proficient, one of the most essential is pragmatic competence. This Chapter provides an analysis of the participating EMI lecturers’ verbal characteristics of the PMs they implemented in their teaching. Whilst acknowledging individual differences, the trend of PM use and the degree of pragmatic transfer revealed in this group’s EMI teaching can be explained in terms of their pedagogical ideologies and subsequent practice, culturally influenced teacher-student relationships, the EMI discipline and its relevant subject matter and the lecturers’ language cognition as L2 users.

AbstractIn general, historians of science and historians of ideas do not focus on critical appraisals of scientific ideas such as vitalism and materialism from Catholic intellectuals in eastern and southeastern Europe, nor is there much comparative work available on how significant European ideas in the life sciences such as materialism and vitalism were understood and received outside of France, Germany, Italy and the UK. Insofar as such treatments are available, they focus on the contributions of nineteenth century vitalism and materialism to later twentieth ideologies, as well as trace the interactions of vitalism and various intersections with the development of genetics and evolutionary biology see Mosse (The culture of Western Europe: the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Westview Press, Boulder, 1988, Toward the final solution: a history of European racism. Howard Fertig Publisher, New York, 1978; Turda et al., Crafting humans: from genesis to eugenics and beyond. V&R Unipress, Goettingen, 2013). English and American eugenicists (such as William Caleb Saleeby), and scores of others underscored the importance of vitalism to the future science of “eugenics” (Saleeby, The progress of eugenics. Cassell, New York, 1914). Little has been written on materialism qua materialism or vitalism qua vitalism in eastern Europe.The Czech and Slovene cases are interesting for comparison insofar as both had national awakenings in the middle of the nineteenth century which were linguistic and scientific, while also being religious in nature (on the Czech case see David, Realism, tolerance, and liberalism in the Czech National awakening: legacies of the Bohemian reformation. Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore, 2010; on the Slovene case see Kann and David, Peoples of the Eastern Habsburg Lands, 1526-1918. University of Washington Press, Washington, 2010). In the case of many Catholic writers writing in Moravia, there are not only slight noticeable differences in word-choice and construction but a greater influence of scholastic Latin, all the more so in the works of nineteenth century Czech priests and bishops.In this case, German, Latin and literary Czech coexisted in the same texts. Thus, the presence of these three languages throws caution on the work on the work of Michael Gordin, who argues that scientific language went from Latin to German to vernacular. In Czech, Slovenian and Croatian cases, all three coexisted quite happily until the First World War, with the decades from the 1840s to the 1880s being particularly suited to linguistic flexibility, where oftentimes writers would put in parentheses a Latin or German word to make the meaning clear to the audience. Note however that these multiple paraphrases were often polemical in the case of discussions of materialism and vitalism.In Slovenia Čas (Time or The Times) ran from 1907 to 1942, running under the muscular editorship of Fr. Aleš Ušeničnik (1868–1952) devoted hundreds of pages often penned by Ušeničnik himself or his close collaborators to wide-ranging discussions of vitalism, materialism and its implied social and societal consequences. Like their Czech counterparts Fr. Matěj Procházka (1811–1889) and Fr. Antonín LenzMaterialismMechanismDynamism (1829–1901), materialism was often conjoined with "pantheism" and immorality. In both the Czech and the Slovene cases, materialism was viewed as a deep theological problem, as it made the Catholic account of the transformation of the Eucharistic sacrifice into the real presence untenable. In the Czech case, materialism was often conjoined with “bestiality” (bestialnost) and radical politics, especially agrarianism, while in the case of Ušeničnik and Slovene writers, materialism was conjoined with “parliamentarianism” and “democracy.” There is too an unexamined dialogue on vitalism, materialism and pan-Slavism which needs to be explored.Writing in 1914 in a review of O bistvu življenja (Concerning the essence of life) by the controversial Croatian biologist Boris Zarnik) Ušeničnik underscored that vitalism was an speculative outlook because it left the field of positive science and entered the speculative realm of philosophy. Ušeničnik writes that it was “Too bad” that Zarnik “tackles” the question of vitalism, as his zoological opinions are interesting but his philosophy was not “successful”. Ušeničnik concluded that vitalism was a rather old idea, which belonged more to the realm of philosophy and Thomistic theology then biology. It nonetheless seemed to provide a solution for the particular characteristics of life, especially its individuality. It was certainly preferable to all the dangers that materialism presented. Likewise in the Czech case, Emmanuel Radl (1873–1942) spent much of his life extolling the virtues of vitalism, up until his death in home confinement during the Nazi Protectorate. Vitalism too became bound up in the late nineteenth century rediscovery of early modern philosophy, which became an essential part of the development of new scientific consciousness and linguistic awareness right before the First World War in the Czech lands. Thus, by comparing the reception of these ideas together in two countries separated by ‘nationality’ but bounded by religion and active engagement with French and German ideas (especially Driesch), we can reconstruct not only receptions of vitalism and materialism, but articulate their political and theological valances.

Natural language processing tools, such as Coh-Metrix and LIWC, have been tremendously successful in offering insight into quantifiable differences between text types. Such quantitative assessments have certainly been highly informative in terms of evaluating theoretical linguistic and psychological categories that distinguish text types (e.g., referential overlap, lexical diversity, positive emotion words, and so forth). Although these identifications are extremely important in revealing ability deficiencies, knowledge gaps, comprehension failures, and underlying psychological phenomena, such assessments can be difficult to interpret because they do not explicitly inform readers and researchers as to which specific linguistic features are driving the text type identification (i.e., the words and word clusters of the text). For example, a tool such as Coh-Metrix informs us that expository texts are more cohesive than narrative texts in terms of sentential referential overlap (McNamara, Louwerse, & Graesser, in press; McCarthy, 2010), but it does not tell us which words (or word clusters) are driving that cohesion. That is, we do not learn which actual words tend to be indicative of the text type differences. These actual words may tend to cluster around certain psychological, cultural, or generic differences, and, as a result, researchers and materials designers who might wish to create or modify text, so as to better meet the needs of readers, are left somewhat in the dark as to which specific language to use. What is needed is a textual analysis tool that offers qualitative output (in addition to quantitative output) that researchers and materials designers might use as a guide to the lexical characteristics of the texts under analysis. The Gramulator is such a tool.

The main goal of the research is to examine linguistic and stylistic features in which the influence of English as a global language, digitalization and mass media is reflected. The problem of linguistic diversity has not been given enough attention in previous analysis dedicated to the analyzed novel. The aim of the paper is to single out linguistic and stylistic characteristics of the novel Leto kad sam naučila da letim, which are a consequence of cultural globalization. Along with global cultural homogenization, there is a strengthening of national consciousness and the rise of national cultures. Islamic diaspora throughout the world has its own characteristics depending on cultural context in each region. Observing the characteristics of the entry process and the rise of Islam in Java in the past, Indonesia can be viewed significantly through a linguistic perspective. By focusing on the narratives of how Islam was constructed in Java by kiai, we will be able to understand that the pattern of the entry process and the rise of Islam in Java emerged through“language diplomacy.” There are various symbols which later became the symbol system in Islamic languages that were contextualized to Javanese language and knowledge systems. In other words, I see that language in this context is a symbol system. These symbols are a strategy of how Islam was “planted” and developed in Java. I will compare the symbol system of the language in the Quran as the Great Tradition of Islam with a symbol system on the narratives that a kiai expressed in Javanese society as the Little Tradition. By taking some narratives that the kiai gave to the Javanese Moslems in East Java region, this paper argues that the linguistic aspect in some narratives and Quran recitation which has the symbolic system of the language have an important role in planting and developing Islam in Java. This paper is based on ethnographic research-participant observation among Nahdlatul Ulama Muslim society in East Java, Indonesia and reviews Islamic narratives in society as an important unit of analysis.

With the implementation of “go globally” strategy of Chinese culture, a large number of Chinese films and TV programs have been produced to go abroad. As a medium and carrier of cultural communication, the quality of documentary subtitle translation determines whether Chinese culture can be appropriately disseminated or not. This paper aims to investigate the translation strategies of culture-specific items with special focus on name of dishes. The object of study in this paper is A Bite of China 1 produced by CCTV in 2012, which is not only about Chinese foods but also geography, local customs and dietary habit. Firstly, by using comparative approach, the linguistic characteristics are discussed to identify the similarities and differences between source and translated dish names. Then the translation strategies for dish name are examined. Next, such factors affecting translation strategies as cultural ideology is analyzed. The objective of this paper is to study what translation strategies are possibly adopted when translating Chinese dish name into English in the documentary. The findings show that in the process of dish name translation of Chinese documentaries, domestication and foreignization are two frequently used strategies which is complementary to each other.

As sources of data, this study surveys Thai rhymes, fairy tales, riddles and riddle songs, rhyming stories, children’s songs and linguistic data of daily speeches in the northwest of Vietnam. The paper uses theories on word meaning and the transformation of word meaning. To aid analysis, this paper applies methods of analyzing meaning components so to construct significative meaning structures of words expressing HBPs in Thai language, thus identifying the semantemes chosen to be the basis for the transformation. In the polysemy of words expressing HBPs of the four limbs, the polysemy of words expressing the following parts were studied: khèn - tay, cánh tay (arm); mễ – tay, bàn tay (hand); khà - đùi (thigh); tìn - chân, bàn chân (leg, foot). Directions of semantic transformation of words expressing HBPs in Thai language are as diversified and as multi-leveled as Vietnamese. Furthermore, in Thai language, there occur differences in the four scopes of semantic transformation, as compared with Vietnamese, including “people’s characteristics,” “human activities,” “nomination of things with activities like HBPs’ activities,” and “unit of measurement.” This study contributes to Linguistic Anthropology by suggesting that the polysemy of words expressing HBPs of the four limb area in Thai language will outline a list of linguistic phenomena which serve as the basis to understand cultural and national features, in the light of perception and categorization of the reality of the Thai minority with reference to Vietnamese.

Abstract:
Southeast Asia (SEA) is not only rich in multicultural areas but also rich in multilingual nations with the population of more than 624 million and more than 1,253 languages (Ethnologue 2015). With the cultural uniqueness of each country, this region also accords each national languages with language planning and political management. This strategy brings a challenges to SEA and can lead to conflicts among other ethnic groups, largely owing to leadership. The ethnic conflicts of SEA bring controversy between governments and minorities, such as the ethnic conflict in Aceh, Indonesia, the Muslim population of the south Thailand, and the Bangsa Moro of Mindanao, of the Philippines. The objective of this paper is to investigate the characteristics of the linguistic perspectives of SEA. This research examines two main problems. First, this paper investigates the linguistic area which refers to a geographical area in which genetically unrelated languages have come to share many linguistic features as a result of long mutual influence. The SEA has been called a linguistic area because languages share many features in common such as lexical tone, classifiers, serial verbs, verb-final items, prepositions, and noun-adjective order. SEA consists of five language families such as Austronesian, Mon-Khmer, Sino-Tibetan, Tai-Kadai, and Hmong-Mien. Second, this paper also examines why each nation of SEA takes one language to become the national language of the nation. The National language plays an important role in the educational system because some nations take the same languages as a national language—the Malay language in the case of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. The research method of this paper is to apply comparative method to find out the linguistic features of the languages of SEA in terms of phonology, morphology, and grammar.

Система наименований лиц по профессии, представленная во всех языках, в каждом из них имеет ряд отличительных черт, обладает своеобразием, аккумулирует особенности данной культуры и формирует её специфику. Лексическая лакунарность относится к наиболее важным аспектам данной проблемы. As a linguistic means of representing social space, the names of persons by profession carry information that is conceptually significant for a given ethnic group. The system of names of persons by profession, presented in all languages, in each of them has a number of distinctive features, has originality, accumulates the characteristics of a given culture and forms its specificity. Lexical lacunarity is one of the most important aspects of this problem.
