Abstract:
India is a rich site for studying intertextuality and influence due to its contemporary and colonial history of postcolonial culture. British imperialism in India was more pragmatic than other colonial powers, being motivated by economics rather than evangelism. During the emergence of Orientalism, India was the first nation to have a literary impact on the West, but this equation was reversed during colonial intervention. While some critics denounce or acclaim the West's effect on India, Indian writers' responses show complex instances of intertextuality and influence in the form of reception. The literary movement in India has been shaped by the traditional attitudes, culture, social life, and politics of the local people. British rule in India lasted for more than two hundred years and its authority halted the ruling power of the Indian subcontinent. The impact of British colonialism on Indian literature and social life is evident. Understanding English literature history is crucial for understanding English people's way of life, including their educational, social, and cultural attitudes. This research paper examines in detail the effect of colonial rule on English literature in India.

Abstract:
The dynamic response of reservoir-gravity dam-foundation interaction is calculated using the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) in frequency domain. The transmitting boundary for the structure-unbounded foundation interaction analysis in frequency domain is used. The lingering effect of the unbounded foundation on the earthquake response of the dam is analyzed. Characteristics of several approximate models developed in the literature are investigated and compared. The results show that the dynamic stress modeled by mass-less foundation overestimate the earthquake response of the dam and the maximum stress considering the effect of the lingering effect is more than that of no lingering effect.

Pham, Hoa H. "Lingering phantoms : haunted literature and counter memories from the Vietnam/American War." Thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.7/uws:37331.

Full text
Abstract:
Ghosts feature prominently in the imaginary of the Vietnam/American war for all sides. These spectres form counter memories that are maintained by ancestor worship or Buddhist conceptions of the hungry ghost, and they run against the rhetoric of the Vietnamese and American nation states. This exegesis will explore the presence of ghosts in published works in English after the Vietnam/American war. Maxine Hong Kingston’s renditions of American war veterans’ stories have emerged from workshops which she has run for veterans. These workshops have been informed by engaged Buddhism, as practised by Thich Nhat Hanh The Sorrow of War sees Kien, a Vietnamese war veteran turned writer, become like a ghost himself after his experiences. In Lan Cao’s Monkey Bridge, Mai is haunted by her mother’s grief and eventual suicide in America. Nam Le writes a short story about his father, who resembles a hungry ghost unable to receive his son’s love. Vu uses the gothic retelling of the Buddhist myth of Anguli Ma to reveal the hungry ghost that dwells inside Dao, his landlady. Vu’s story, A Psychic Guide to Vietnam obscures more than explains Vietnam to the reader with a text using silences and omissions. These works are ‘counter memories’ to the dominant Hollywood depictions of the war. The novel that accompanies the exegesis, titled The Lady of the Realm, retells the parable of Quan Am and is a historical fiction featuring Lien and her decades of stories, and Kim, a young psychic employed by the present-day Vietnamese government to reunite the war dead with their descendants. Ghosts literally feature in the text, and the work is polyphoniclike the nature of truths. These works together present a diverse range of voices and heterogeneous representations of the war, and it is hoped that in telling their stories, some ghosts will be put to rest.

Price, Roz. Managing Multiple Crises: Lessons from Covid-19. Institute of Development Studies, November 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/cc.2022.006.

Abstract:
The World is facing numerous, overlapping crises with the war in Ukraine exacerbating a global cost-of-living crisis, coupled with the lingering effects of Covid-19 and ongoing climate change impacts. After nearly three years of dealing with Covid-19, the world economy has been left in a fragile state and the ability of countries and people to deal with multiple, compounding issues has therefore also been eroding (UN, 2022, p. 2). Those that are most marginalised and least able to cope will likely be hit the hardest by these crises. This rapid review does not provide an in-depth discussion of these issues or the proposed solutions needed, but looks to learnings from managing the Covid-19 pandemic, especially where the pandemic overlapped with other crises, as well as the wider disaster risk and crisis management literature to gather insights into how these turbulent times and future crises can be navigated.

Lenhardt, Amanda. Development Finance for Socioeconomic Programming in Response to Covid-19. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), November 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/cc.2021.009.

Full text
Abstract:
The Covid-19 crisis led multilateral and bilateral donors to revise their funding strategies to respond to the crisis and to adapt existing programming to the new context it created. This resulted in changes to overall allocations, with some countries increasing aid commitments and institutions like the World Bank scaling up lending to low- and middle-income countries while others have cut aid budgets due to low economic growth and demands on domestic resources at home. Changes in aid volumes and disbursal mechanisms are anticipated to have significant impacts on low- and middle-income countries’ abilities to cope with the crisis in the short term, and the targeting of these investments are likely to have a lingering effect on recoveries for years to come. Although aid makes up a small proportion of countries’ available finance to tackle the Covid-19 crisis, “other financing options such as foreign direct investment, workers’ remittances, and taxes – have fallen and are slow to recover” (Prizzon, 2021). Aid finance will therefore be critical to many countries’ short-term responses to Covid-19 and capacities to abate longer-term negative impacts on social and economic outcomes as countries begin to recover. This report gives a broad overview of trends in bilateral, multilateral, and private foundations’ funding strategies over the course of the pandemic to highlight observable shifts in practice. The review is based on a rapid search of funding announcements from a selection of bilateral donors, a selection of multilateral institutions, and overall trends reported by foundations. The report also includes evidence reported by secondary literature on finance for development over the course of the Covid-19 crisis.

Expanding Education Abroad Access for Non-Traditional Learners. The Forum on Education Abroad, July 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36366/wp.eeaatnl07192023.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper, we seek to demonstrate the importance of all learners having access to education abroad opportunities, and we highlight the need for resources to make education abroad accessible to and inclusive of all. We are doing so with the diverse experiences that both learners and educators had during the COVID-19 pandemic, when learning was only able to take place in ways considered nontraditional. This paper incorporates survey results, research, literature, and critical analysis. We consider education abroad resources for nontraditional learners through lenses of barriers such as capacity and lingering institutional assumptions, as well as strategies that have engaged nontraditional learners, like innovative program development, campus collaborations, and targeted marketing and outreach.
