Vostrý, L., O. Kracíková, B. Hofmanová, V. Czerneková, T. Kott, and J. Přibyl. "Intra-line and inter-line genetic diversity in sire lines of the Old Kladruber horse based on microsatellite analysis of DNA." Czech Journal of Animal Science 56, No. 4 (April 5, 2011): 163–75. http://dx.doi.org/10.17221/1437-cjas.

Full text
Abstract:
The Old Kladruber horse is the oldest original Czech horse breed – gene resource, with pedigree records spanning three centuries. Because the population is closed, there is a concern about the loss of genetic variation. The genetic diversity within and amongst sire lines was evaluated using microsatellite markers and based on pedigree information. The DNA analysis, covering 16 microsatellite loci, revealed that the genetic diversity (observed heterozygosity = 0.637, genetic diversity = 0.678 and the mean number of alleles = 8.25) for the Old Kladruber horse is consistent with other populations of horses. Inter-line genetic difference in sire lines reached the mean value (the FST values ranged from 0.020 to 0.017). Differences amongst the sire lines were identified using genetic distances and principal component analysis. One gene cluster comprised black variation sire lines, while the second cluster included the sire lines of the grey variation. In the subjects monitored, the average inbreeding coefficient of 0.076 was estimated on the basis of pedigree information. The highest mean values of the coefficient of relationship were estimated within the colour variations. When comparing the genetic distance and the average coefficient of relationship, differences were found out. These results are useful for the development of breeding strategies which consider classical horse breeding as well as recent achievements of population and conservation genetics.

Full text
Abstract:
In four not overlapping sets of cultivars, including doubled haploid (DH) lines and pedigree derived (PD) lines of winter oilseed rape, both types of lines were compared in basic agronomic traits. The tested lines originated from breeding programmes of different breeders. Each set of cultivars was tested in a different year from 2001 to 2004 in multi-location trials with four replicates. There was no consistency in yield superiority of DH or PD lines and in all four sets the differences between the means of DH and PD groups were insignificant. On average, the differences between the groups of DH and PD lines were negligible in all evaluated agronomic traits. The statistical analyses of yield performance however revealed a very low predictive value of the multi-location trials. It can be concluded that with the given selection techniques and the actual system of cultivar trials nearly random samples of possible DH and PD lines were obtained in which no superiority of DH or PD lines in the evaluated agronomic traits could be detected.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The films of Sky Hopinka (Ho-Chunk Nation/ Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians) aesthetically intervene in photography and cinema’s historical complicities with settler colonialism. This article explores how Hopinka’s filmmaking practice undisciplines vision as it has been constructed and sustained by settler visual regimes. Situating close readings and his broader practice within Indigenous concepts and contexts, this article accounts for the ethical and political dimensions of Hopinka’s poetic approach. In analyzing the significance of Hopinka’s audiovisual methods, Ruíz introduces the architectural concept of “desire lines” to encompass Hopinka’s contributions to undisciplining vision, both on and off-screen. Selected films in this essay include: wawa (2014), Jáaji Approx. (2015), I’ll Remember You as You Were, not as What You’ll Become (2016), Dislocation Blues (2017), and maɬni – towards the ocean, towards the shore (2020). The postscript introduces the COUSIN collective, a collaboration between Hopinka and fellow Indigenous filmmakers Alexandra Lazarowich, Adam Khalil, and Adam Piron.
