Abstract:
This research investigates the creative use of expressive drapery and textiles, and in particular the line of washing, in three films that have rich displays of fabrics and costume: The Piano (dir. Jane Campion, 1993), The Governess (dir. Sandra Goldbacher, 1998) and Girl with a Pearl Earring (dir. Peter Webber, 2003); and provides the inspiration for a series of short films that explore positive and negative aspects of clotheslines and textiles. The research areas of Film Costume, Fashion Studies and Art History each provide relevant context and background to the study of the clothes and linens in the three films under consideration. Significant themes that are considered include: cinema’s ambivalent relationship with costume; dress, undress and the male gaze; representations of historical and character-coded clothing; the expression of fantasy and desire through textiles and costume; and the contribution of art history towards creating an understanding of fabrics that denote a separation between the ordinary and extraordinary and between reality and an imaginary sphere. Mary Ann Doane’s study of the gaze at the interface of the interior and exterior of the home in the ‘woman’s film’ leads her to consider the frequent portrayal of women waiting by or looking through windows in relation to Freud’s theory of The Uncanny and leads me to recognize that the line of washing in cinema also denotes the limits of a woman’s space within the grounds of her home and marks a formal boundary between the familiar and the unknown. Similarly, the line of washing reflects notions of The 5 Uncanny in displays that portray tensions between the opposing themes of the seen and unseen, the spoken and unspoken, of presence and absence and of purity and contamination. The idea of familiar clothes and linens displayed on the line of washing as alternately comforting and disconcerting has become the focus of my practice. Some of the works have been shown individually during the course of this study in group and open art exhibitions, and a solo exhibition at Galeri Caernarfon 15th January – 24th February 2017 showed the collected short films and supporting material resulting from the research.

Abstract:
The thesis contains a series of ideas & conclusions: The introductory statement suggests four criteria for the pursuit of producing good architecture. These criteria are not in the realm of problem solving. But rather address issues of the heart & mind. It is through a struggle with these measures that architecture becomes true and encompasses a realization larger than the problems at hand. It is only then that architecture exists in a continuum across time. The projects in this book make a meager attempt to begin to understand a pedagogy for spirit. responsibility. making & judgement.

Vergara, Valdés Juan. "Composing lines." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2018. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/34685/.

Full text
Abstract:
My work as a composer over the course of my PhD studies has focused on developing novel approaches to the notion of ‘line’ in music. This portfolio of compositions, composed between 2013 and 2017, is accompanied by a commentary that presents the conceptual ideas underlying my work with lines, from both a technical and aesthetic perspective. In this approach, the most novel element resides in the fact that lines function here often not as metaphor but as literal objects. Throughout the text a range of different conceptions of lines are presented, providing a contextual and explanatory panorama for the compositional work. A line is understood in this context as a sustained sound that changes at a slow but perceptible rate, its ‘line-ness’ defined principally by its continual and smooth character. The approach undertaken consists of first conceiving lines as single entities, thoroughly exploring aspects such as their materiality, physicality, plasticity and fragmentability, in which their objective quality is gradually revealed and exploited further compositionally. The commentary is divided roughly in half, initially proposing a series of types or families of lines, and then moving on to discuss the behaviour of those lines and the ways in which lines can be organized compositionally. First, various linemodels are addressed, including the geological-line, the polychromatic-line, the thread-line, and the drawing-line, each typified in relation to a particular piece from the portfolio. I then present the idea of the ‘pixelation’ of lines from both vertical and horizontal perspectives, unveiling the extended resonant potential of fragmented lines. Later, certain combinatorial possibilities are pursued, giving rise to emergent behaviours of blurriness or in fluid-like textures characterized by permeability and motion. Throughout, I contextualize these musical approaches with references to other disciplines—especially the visual arts—helping to illustrate the ideas and concepts presented.

Dulaney, Laura Jaques. "Fault Lines." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42110.

Full text
Abstract:
Fault Lines is a collection of nine stories that explore the themes of otherness, isolation, and transitions. In most of these stories I explore the concept of isolation in its many forms— emotional, physical, social, and spiritual. Many of my characters are people who have been "othered" for one reason or another, and many of them are people on the cusp, not only of society but also their own lives. I also explore characters who are on the verge of transition, either staring one down with fear and denial, moving hesitantly and trepidatiously toward one, or, in rare instances, jumping gleefully toward that next big moment in their lives. Many of my characters yearn for something to transcend their ordinary, material lives, whether through a spiritual encounter or simply an ordinary yet unusual one. Some of these characters are stuck in the mire of their current lives, and we see an uncomfortable mix of lethargy and longing. Primarily, I explore exactly what catalysts people require in order to move from a state which, though unsatisfying, might be comfortable, to one that is unknown and risky but potentially fulfilling. The title of the collection refers to those moments or events in one's life that indicate or cause shifts or transitions, whether mental, physical, or emotional.

My thesis work is about flow. Indeterminate lines symbolize the developing plant form and explore the perception of space by experimenting with the subject's proportion and shape. Movement is also a vital factor of space, a notion found in the early forms of cursive script (grass script) of Far Eastern calligraphy. My individual plant pieces work as dots and lines of cursive script. An installation's ceramic pieces illustrate similar flow and movement when viewed as a whole.

Abstract:
Lines are everywhere and as humans we produce lines all the time. In this project I used the line as a method, a metaphor, and a material to explore what are the elements that influence and condition the way we move and behave around different spaces. Lines can be read as many things and for this project I choose to work with lines that could be understood as boundaries and limits. How do we deal with lines in our everyday life? How do lines and bodies influence each other? How is the space choreographed and experienced according to the boundaries that exist in it?   However not all boundaries are made of matter. In fact, some of them are invisible and manifest as prohibitions, regulations, prejudice, or just cultural norms. These limits can also be understood as non-matter lines that have an impact on one's experiences. Through several explorations, the project proposes an installation that seeks to embody the spatial boundaries that cannot always be seen. Using light and sound as catalyzers for these experiences, the installation is a reflection on what happens when we meet those invisible lines, how they have the power to change our usual path and to make us move differently around a space.

Webb, J. K. "QSO absorption lines." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 1987. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.234000.

Full text
Abstract:
The absorption lines found in the spectra of distant quasars provide a unique method of probing the physical conditions in the universe at early epochs. This thesis describes a study of the Lyman alpha forest absorption systems seen in the spectra of high redshift QSOs. The Anglo-Australian Telescope has been used to obtain high resolution spectra of several bright QSOs. Considerable effort has gone into developing statistical techniques for profile fitting to the data to objectively and reliably extract the parameters associated with each absorbing cloud. The distribution functions for these are given and discussed. Particular attention has been paid to the clustering properties of the Lyman alpha clouds and it is found that they are weakly (but significantly) clustered on small velocity scales. Possible interpretations of this result are discussed. One especially interesting aspect of QSO absorption systems concerns the potential for measuring, or obtaining limits on, the deuterium to hydrogen abundance at high redshifts. A knowledge of this quantity is important for constraining cosmological models and can also help us to understand the chemical evolution of light elements in galaxies. A series of numerical simulations has been carried out to explore the potential for such measurements and an absorption system has been analysed to obtain an upper limit to D/H at z = 3.

Hutchesson, Stuart. "Trusted product lines." Thesis, University of York, 2013. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3941/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes research undertaken into the application of software product line approaches to the development of high-integrity, embedded real-time software systems that are subject to regulatory approval/certification. The motivation for the research arose from a real business need to reduce cost and lead time of aerospace software development projects. The thesis hypothesis can be summarised as follows: It is feasible to construct product line models that allow the specification of required behaviour within a reference architecture that can be transformed into an effective product implementation, whilst enabling suitable supporting evidence for certification to be produced. The research concentrates on the following four main areas: 1. Construction of an argument framework in which the application of product line techniques to high-integrity software development can be assessed and critically reviewed. 2. Definition of a product-line reference architecture that can host components containing variation. 3. Design of model transformations that can automatically instantiate products from a set of components hosted within the reference architecture. 4. Identification of verification approaches that may provide evidence that the transformations designed in step 3 above preserve properties of interest from the product line model into the product instantiations. Together, these areas form the basis of an approach we term “Trusted Product Lines”. The approach has been evaluated and validated by deployment on a real aerospace project; the approach has been used to produce DO-178B/ED-12B Level A applications of over 300 KSLOC in size. The effect of this approach on the software development process has been critically evaluated in this thesis, both quantitatively (in terms of cost and relative size of process phases) and qualitatively (in terms of software quality). The “Trusted Product Lines” approach, as described within the thesis, shows how product line approaches can be applied to high-integrity software development, and how certification evidence created and arguments constructed for products instantiated from the product line. To the best of our knowledge, the development and effective application of product line techniques in a certification environment is novel and unique.

Belonging comes from the act of active listening that goes beyond borders of nationality, gender, race, sexuality, beyond the first glance. Listening creates a bond of trust that helps us find understanding and compassion. I feel I belong when I am listening and being listened to, when both ends extend towards the other and meet half way, when neither part is afraid. I belong thanks to my friends that together have helped me create a home in a multitude of displacement. Look, listen. Look beyond the images, listen between the lines.

Abstract:
Classical algebraic geometry is the study of curves, surfaces, and other varieties defined as the zero set of polynomial equations. Tropical geometry is a branch of algebraic geometry based on the tropical semiring with operations minimization and addition. We introduce the notions of projective space and tropical projective space, which are well-suited for answering enumerative questions, like ours. We attempt to describe the set of tropical lines contained in a tropical quadric surface in $\mathbb{TP}^3$. Analogies with the classical problem and computational techniques based on the idea of a tropical parameterization suggest that the answer is the union of two disjoint conics in $\mathbb{TP}^5$.

Bhattarai, Roshan. "Uprating of overhead lines." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2011. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/55094/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis establishes a rigorous procedure for overhead line uprating with guidance for calculating the increase in voltage rating that may be achieved for given configurations. It initially investigates different technical issues and conventional methods of voltage uprating of overhead transmission lines. Various issues such as clearance, insulation, pollution, transient overvoltages, surge arresters and its combinations were studied for optimised insulation coordination of voltage uprated transmission systems with reference to international standard IEC 60071 and British standard BSEN 50341. It then considers a case of existing 275kV line in 'L3' structures to analyse these issues and propose appropriate process for its possible uprating to 400kV system. In this investigation, overhead line uprating techniques used by different utilities around the world, as published in the literature were analysed. It was found that, the decision to uprate overhead lines is influenced by technical, institutional and financial issues. In this thesis, issues such as conductor air clearance, insulation electrical strength and overvoltages are investigated and taken into account to develop an appropriate methodology. For uprating overhead lines, an exemplar case study of uprating an L3, 275kV line to 400kV was used, introducing minimum structural changes to the tower. The selection of the L3 tower is made on the basis that it is not readily upratable to 400kV due to restricted air clearances it offers. This work has demonstrated that the voltage uprating of overhead transmission lines is possible with minimal modification to the existing line. In this case, the phase-to-earth clearance was found to be the critical factor which determines the level to which the voltage level of the line can be increased. Computations of overvoltages due to switching and lightning phenomena were conducted to estimate overvoltage levels and optimise the protection scheme required to minimise the required minimum electrical clearances. Employing gapless metal-oxide line surge arresters were proposed to be the most effective solution to control the overvoltages, thereby reducing the minimum phase-to-earth clearance requirements. This solution is preferred to modifying the tower structure in order to achieve the required clearance for 400kV system. The study of lightning and switching surge performances along the line under different arrester configurations was carried out so that the appropriate surge arrester configuration could be selected to maintain overvoltage levels within the targeted withstand level for the line. The extensive transient simulations performed in this work identified that, for a double circuit overhead transmission line as used on the UK system, the top-most phase conductors are prone to shielding failure lightning strikes whilst the bottom-most phase conductors are likely to be subjected to backflashover surges for the case of high tower footing resistance. The assessment of electric and magnetic field profiles of a 275kV line uprated to 400kV was computed. It showed that, the field intensities of voltage uprated lines are within the limits adopted by national and international standards and requires no additional wayleave for uprating.

Over recent years, the interest in using inductive wireless power transmission for many applications has grown. One of the major limitations of this technology is the reduced operating distance. Some recent works have suggested using artificial materials known as metamaterials to improve the power transfer efficiency over distance. Due to their unique electromagnetic properties, such as negative permeability, metamaterials can be used to enhance the evanescent waves of the near field. In the present work, the usage of an electromagnetic metamaterial to increase the inductive coupling by means of enhanced evanescent waves is studied. Analytical calculations and numerical simulations of the proposed metamaterial are presented. The improvement of the power transfer efficiency is supported by empirical evidences.

Wang, Yi. "Superconducting coplanar delay lines." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2005. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7/.

Full text
Abstract:
Two 25 ns wideband HTS delay lines with a novel double-spiral meander line (DSML) structure are designed, fabricated and measured. One is based on the conventional coplanar waveguide (CPW), and the other based on a conductor-backed coplanar waveguide (CBCPW). Systematic design work is presented in this thesis on the calculations of transmission-line parameters, the selection and optimisation of delay line patterns, and the modelling of the transitions and connections at the input/output. Simulations show that the DSML structure has better transmission efficiency over a wide frequency range than the conventional double-spiral line (DSL). The bandwidth and dispersion of such a meander structure are investigated. The fabricated delay lines are first characterised as resonators with a fundamental mode at ~20 MHz. The surface resistances of the superconductors and the temperature- and power-dependent properties are investigated by measuring the Q-values of more than 1000 harmonics from 20 MHz to 20 GHz. Then, the delay lines are fully connected as they would be used in the application and measured thoroughly in both the frequency and time domain. The performance of the CBCPW delay line is the best ever demonstrated in terms of the widest resonance-free band (2 to 18 GHz), low insertion loss (0.06 dB/ns at 60 K and 10 GHz), small ripple (<1 dB up until 16 GHz), and small dispersion (< 2 ns in the variation of group delay between 2 and 18 GHz). This is the first coplanar delay line successfully demonstrated without using bonding-wires to join the in-plane grounds. The spurious reflecting elements in the DSML structure are identified by the time domain analyses. The results from this measurement are compared comprehensively with those from both resonance measurement and simulations.

Full text
Abstract:
Thomas Jefferson: Life Lines is a five movement composition based on excerpts from Thomas Jefferson's personal letters. The material presented focuses on the intimate, human qualities of the man. The musical treatment of this material illuminates and amplifies different aspects of the inner Jefferson. The music is as diverse and varied as Jefferson's interests. The style, tone and form of the music are directly tied to Jefferson's words. Two fundamental components of Jefferson's being, the rational mind and the emotional heart, are musically portrayed in the introduction of the first movement. The music that follows in the first and all subsequent movements is derived from these two components. The first movement contains eight brief excerpts that highlight different aspects of Jefferson's mindset. Each of the remaining movements focuses on a single subject: The second movement, the death of Jefferson's wife, Martha; the third movement, Monticello; the fourth movement, a dialogue between Jefferson's head and heart; and the fifth movement, Jefferson's belief in the free mind. The music is presented by a chamber ensemble of twenty-two performers: five woodwinds (flute, oboe, two B-flat clarinets, bassoon), five brass (two french horns in F, trumpet in C, trombone, tuba), two percussionists, piano, four vocalists (alto, two tenors, bass) and five strings (two violins, viola, cello, double bass). Historical background for each epistolary excerpt and an explanation of the its corresponding music is found in the preface.

Abstract:
Statnett wants to increase the transmission capacity in their 300 kV overhead lines by upgrading the operating voltage to 420 kV. To make this possible some modifications must be done. Insulator strings have to be elongated by two to four insulators and the air clearances must be checked. EN standards provide guidelines for how to calculate the air clearances adequately to provide required safety margins. It turns out that the formulas given by the standards provide greater safety margin than appropriate for upgraded transmission lines. By finding new proper safety margins, several towers which otherwise would have to be rebuilt to fulfill the requirements for clearances, can stay unmodified. When considering the number of towers in an average transmission line, there is obviously a great potential for saving money by putting some effort looking into proper minimum air clearances. By reduce the air clearance by approximately 10 cm, 6.5 mill. NOK were spared in a 65 km transmission line. It is therefore desirable to calculate the air clearances on the basis of smaller safety margins than described in the standard, but which is still within acceptable safety limits. In the formulas for minimum distances, the statistical withstand voltage U50%, gap-factors and altitude factors are examined for the cases of operating voltage, switching impulse and lightning impulse.Discrepancies between test results from a laboratory work conducted by STRI and calculations based on the EN standard of U50%, have been discovered. Tested U50 for switching impulses are 5–9 % higher than U50 from the standard. The same applies for lightning impulses where the tested value is 12 % higher than the standard. This gives reason to assume the standard to be somewhat conservative.Further, discrepancies are found between the standard EN 50341 that says that the gap factor when an insulator is present is the same as if no insulator is present, and Cigré report 72, which says that the gap factor should be corrected for the presence of insulators. Correction for insulators will lead to a lower gap factor i.e. lower break down strength along the insulator string than in the rest of the air gap. It turns out that the combination of rain and insulator string reduce the gap factor and thus, the withstand strength in the cases of switching impulses in the order of 6-13 % for V-string insulators and 20-34 % for I-string insulators and for continuous power frequency voltage in the order of 25 % for V-string insulators and 33-40 % for I-string insulators.Rain has no influence on the withstand strength of I-strings or V-strings exposed to lightning impulses.Several previous researches [1][2] shows the same tendencies of lack of correlation between U50 and gap factors when air gaps with insulator strings are exposed to lightning impulses. Thus, the gap factor is not sufficient to describe the discharge characteristics of air gaps with insulator strings exposed to lightning impulses. It is found that the air gap between phase and guy wire has approximately 7 % greater withstand strength than over the insulator string in a tower window. This additional safety margin is a desirable property in terms that the guy wires are the weakest point of a tower. This should however be verified by full-scale laboratory tests as this is mainly valid for the case of only the conductor-guy wire gap without the presence of the other air gaps that represent the tower window.

Abstract:
This thesis presents research aimed at investigating different activities involved in software product lines testing process and possible improvements towards achieving developing high quality software product lines at reduced cost and time. The research was performed using systematic review procedures of Kitchenham. The reviews carried out in this research covers several areas relating to software product lines testing. The reasons for performing a systematic review in this research are to; summarize the existing evidence covering testing in software product line context, to identify gaps in current research and to suggest areas for further research. The contribution of this thesis is research aimed at revealing the different activities, issues and challenges in software product lines testing. The research into the different activities in software product lines lead to the proposed SPLIT Model for software product lines testing. The model helps to clarify the steps and activities involved in the software product line testing process. It provides and easy to follow map for testers and managers in software product line development organizations. The results were mainly on how testing in software product lines can be improved upon, towards achieving software product line goals. The basic contribution is the proposed model for product line testing, investigation into, and possible improvement in, issues related to software product line testing activities.
The main purpose of the research as presented in this thesis is to present a clear picture of testing in the context of software product lines, which is quite different from testing in single product. The focus of this thesis is specifically the different steps and activities involved in software product lines testing and possible improvements in software product lines testing activities and issues towards achieving the goals of developing high quality software product lines at reduced cost and time. But, for software product lines to achieve its goals, there should be a comprehensive set of testing activities in software product lines development. The development activities from performing analyses and creating designs to integrating programs in software product line context, component testing and tools support for software product lines testing should be taken into consideration.

Abstract:
In this thesis we make a new measurement of the primordial deuterium abundance, and analyse five other systems selected as possible D/H candidates. We also undertake an investigation of systematic errors in a system where an existing deuterium measurement has been made. We measure the number of hydrogen components and their velocity distributions in a moderate and high redshift sample of Lyman limit systems in one Angstrom resolution spectra. We present a new measurement of the deuterium-to-hydrogen ratio, D/H, at z=3.2560 in a newly-discovered low metallicity absorption system towards the quasar PG1937-1009. We attempt to account for any systematic effects that could influence the D/H measurement. We find a 1 sigma range for D/H*1e5 of 1.6 (+0.25) (-0.30). Using high resolution spectra from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Very Large Telescope, we assess the suitability of five D/H candidate absorption systems. These systems were selected as candidates using lower resolution spectra. We measure the neutral hydrogen column density, identify metal lines and analyse the velocity structure of each system, and show them to be unsuitable for measuring D/H. We also investigate the systematic errors in the absorber at z=0.701 towards quasar PG1718-4801 that was initially thought to show a high primordial D/H value. We analyse the dependence of the putative deuterium line's parameters on wavelength calibration errors in the HST spectra and present a revised deuterium measurement. We examine the velocity widths of two samples of one Angstrom resolution quasar spectra showing Lyman limit absorption systems. The first sample is at high redshifts, taken from the Sloan quasar data release 3 catalogue. The second is at intermediate redshifts, compiled from a survey for UV quasar absorption systems taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. We use a modified version of the Voigt profile fitting program, VPFIT, to estimate the number of hydrogen velocity components and column density in the Lyman limit systems. We compare the velocity distributions of the higher and lower redshift samples. We find the distributions are consistent with other measures of the velocity spread in absorption systems, and find no compelling evidence for evolution between the redshift samples.

A line, the simplest way to express an artist's feelings or interpretation of an object, has its own emotions that an artist can employ for her purpose. Laser light, the most self-concentrated, self-sustained and directed, has its unique characteristics that no other medium can imitate. When a line and laser light are combined, the result is a knife-cut clean laser line that catches the viewers breath. Artists, who have chosen the laser as their tool, need to make laser line images more attractive than laser light itself. In other words, artists must find the beauty of laser lines. Otherwise, the tool of the work dominates the artist's work itself. In this thesis, I having already chosen the laser as my tool, tried to find the beauty of laser lines by first learning the technical aspects and the characteristics of lasers. Then I examined previous works done by other laser artists, before working with lasers myself. I designed four laser projects in order to find "the beauty of laser lines," and the details of my works will be presented in this thesis.

Abstract:
Transgas Shipping Lines S.A. is a Peruvian shipping company specializing in the Maritime transport of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, Crude Oil and by-products, and Chemical products. In 1991, the company began to transport LPG between Peruvian ports. Seven years later, they began to conquer international markets, reaching important places on the West Coast of South America, the Caribbean region and some countries of the Asian continent. This is an example that as time goes on, the market becomes more competitive and new challenges arise, where companies have to respond with new strategies. In this sense, Transgas seeks to improve its performance not only in the core areas, but also within the support departments such as a logistics and operations department. After the analysis of the company’s current situation, the main problem has been defined as the ineffective control, management and measurement of the logistics and operations department. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of this problem concludes that the company is affected in different activities within the organization. At the same time, the company presents economic losses and decrease in the income statement due to low efficiency and the ignorance of the current performance. The solution presented in this report has a set of steps to follow which has as a final product the elaboration of a dashboard, where the Key performance indicators of the department in the study will be shown. The implementation of this project consists of 4 phases which start with the change of culture, followed by the redefinition of the processes, the systematization of information and finally the creation of the dashboard. This implementation will allow the company to measure its performance, control its processes and thus improve its operations, with the aim of providing a high-quality service to their clients.
Transgas is a Peruvian shipping company based out of Lima, Peru that has specialized in the transportation of hydrocarbons such as liquefied petroleum gasses, oil derivatives, and various chemicals. As a member of a very complex industry, environment, safety, and people have always been the primary focus of Transgas. In that regard, quality management becomes an essential part of the organization to ensure clients, staff and the community that the integrity of people and environment is a top priority of their day-to-day business. For this reason, the company is currently international certified in quality, environmental and safety management. After the initial analysis of the company´s current situation, the key problem was that Transgas has not implemented appropriately its quality management system. This problem causes a multitude of problems in regular operations, especially evidenced in the breakdowns on leadership and communication. The investigation focus on the challenges for a shipping company to fully-develop its quality management system due to the nature of the business such as the separation between the vessel operation and the administrative office. The proposed solutions addressed the problem in three aspects. First, the commitment of the people towards quality management has enhanced through training and rewards program. Second, the role of top management towards quality in the company was reinforce with clearer job description to define leader’s role and responsibilities. Finally, the lack of control and self-assessment was addressed by proposing a new quality policy and internal audits. The proposals are expected to help the company build a strong quality culture, increase the overall quality of its services and enhance team work. An implementation plan, along with its key success factors, was proposed to facilitate application of these proposals in the organization

Abstract:
This Thesis describes a technique for collecting, moulding and testing naturally occurring ice accretions. Faithful reproductions of the ice shapes were cast in silicone rubber from which wind tunnel models were made. They were tested using a specifically designed wind tunnel rig which measured the aerodynamic lift, drag and pitching moment of the models. From the aerodynamic data the gradients of lift, drag and pitching moment of each ice shape were calculated. The aerodynamic data were consequently used in a two-dimensional two degree of freedom theoretical aerodynamic model which included aerodynamic lift, drag, moment, ice eccentricity, conductor wake effects and the mechanical properties of the conductor. Wind tunnel tests were carried out on a specifically designed wind tunnel dynamic rig. Instabilities of the coupled vertical/torsional galloping were established. Regions of instability were also predicted using a two-dimensional theoretical conductor model. The initial theoretical analysis formed the basis upon which a more sophisticated three-dimensional finite element aeroelastic model was developed. The effects of ice and wind on the natural frequencies and the stability of the conductor were investigated. The use of galloping control devices, the pendulum detuners was also examined. Results showed that the pendulums had a stabilising effect in controlling the vertical/torsional frequency ratio of twin bundles. The vibration characteristics and the stability of quad bundles were investigated using finite elements. In this case, the pendulums shifted the torsional frequencies of the bundle to higher values close to the corresponding vertical frequencies, thus enhancing coupling and having an adverse effect on stability. Finally, limitations in the performance of the pendulum detuners were predicted.

Abstract:
This study provides an examination and application of heterotopic dérive, a concept that combines spatial theories originated by Foucault and psychogeographical methods advocated by the Situationists, as enacted within theatrical performance spaces. The first chapter reviews theories related to space, place, and heterotopias, as well as the psychogeographical methods of the Situationists, particularly the dérive. The literature review is augmented with accounts of my experiences of serendipitous heterotopic dérive over a period of several years as a cast member in, or a technical director for, theatrical productions in the Department of Communication Studies Black Box Theatre. Based on the review, I postulate that heterotopic dérive is a potentially valuable phenomenon that performance studies scholar/artists can utilize consciously in the rehearsal process for mounting theatrical performances. To test this proposition, I worked collaboratively with a theatrical cast to craft a devised performance, Desire Lines, with a conscious effort to engender heterotopic dérive in the process of creating the performance. This performance served as the basis for the second chapter of the study, which analyzes and discusses of the results of that investigation. This project enhances understanding of the significance of the places and spaces in which performers practice their craft, and argues for the potential of recognizing and utilizing the agency of heterotopic spaces such as the Black Box.

This work was written for ten performers plus tape. The instruments are divided into two groups, each with a distinct personality: flute, clarinet, horn, violin and cello in an "orderly" group, and three percussionists, piano, doublebass and tape in a "chaotic" group. The first two sections introduce these groups separately. The third section returns to the order group, which begins to show a chaotic influence. The fourth section, for tape alone, echoes the first in its stability. The final section, for the entire live ensemble, fuses the two groups into a texture which is not entirely chaotic, nor entirely orderly.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was two-fold. First, an investigation into the design process was conducted in order to find the influences, which bring forth architecture from various methods of play and interaction with materials, media and idea forming. This work was documented with several stop motion animations and compiled in the form of a movie that is attached to this book. Following this examination, a more traditional design method was used to create a Montessori School that would draw inspiration from its position between the earth and sun to guide its architecture. The result of this method is evident through the following drawings and models.

Earth has its natural features; mountains, valleys, ocean, rivers, lakes, trees, plants, flowers etc. It has inhabitants; Man, animals, insects, birds etc. Man being supreme creature, introduced architecture to provide shelter for him initially and with the passage of time he brought it to the elegance where it is today. I would like to carry out his legacy with the intent of Romancing the Earth with Nothing but the Truth written in Poetic lines. My humble approach to create is to carve out the TRUTH into being from not being, to stay honest to the site and be noble in the cause. Through my investigation, my objective is to establish a life style with a serene environment. A place where one is tranquil to think about the higher values of life, A place to lose oneâ s SELF and find HIMSELF, to serve his purpose in the universe which will bring real joy to his mind, enrichment to his soul and contentment to his body.
