The monograph is devoted to the organization of the investigator's own work. After analyzing the concept and structure of this line of investigative activity, practical recommendations for its implementation are offered. Serious attention is paid to the preparatory stage of labor organization, covering the assessment of the organizational and managerial situation, the design of the order of performance of official duties.
Some aspects of the main stage, which consists in the implementation of the investigator's chosen model of labor organization, are also investigated. This chapter is concerned with a single consideration: the degree of proportionality between a light signal and its resulting electrical output. This is formally referred to as linearity, which depends on the suitability of the chosen PMT and the mode of operation (pulsed or analogue). Applications fall into two groups: analogue operation (DC) and transient applications. Linearity in a pulsed mode of operation concerns both pulse height (charge) and the rate of events. Generally, in the DC mode, only the mean anode current is relevant. Methods for determining both forms of non-linearity are presented, based on actual measurements. Test methods using multiple light sources, bootstrapping, single step (piggyback), and shot noise are investigated. A method for uncovering non-linearity in high-Z scintillators by using coincident gamma emissions (60Co) is demonstrated. An analytical means for correcting results at the 1 % level is provided.

This chapter summarizes key themes and presents some final thoughts. This book presents how racial performance of and by South Asians in American television and film acts as both an expression of privilege and difference with regards to racial identity. The progression of Indian accents, such as brownface and brown-voice performance, is not linear but, in fact, teleological as seen by the reappearance of racial stereotypes and the repetition of Indian vocal accents in different manifestations in film and television. Contemporary stories have transformed former stereotypes of the native guide and the street-wise orphan into more-modern avatars, such as Apu, the wily immigrant, and Kumar, the patriotic model-minority stoner, who are well-known American cultural icons. In a post-9/11 world where South Asians and South Asian Americans are viewed as possible national security threats, these racial performances continue to ease American anxieties about difference and promote the American Dream as one of the most valued tenets of American culture.

Please check back later for the full article.The concept of statistical downscaling or empirical-statistical downscaling became a distinct and important scientific approach in climate science in recent decades, when the climate change issue and assessment of climate change impact on various social and natural systems have become international challenges. Global climate models are the best tools for estimating future climate conditions. Even if improvements can be made in state-of-the art global climate models, in terms of spatial resolution and their performance in simulation of climate characteristics, they are still skillful only in reproducing large-scale feature of climate variability, such as global mean temperature or various circulation patterns (e.g., the North Atlantic Oscillation). However, these models are not able to provide reliable information on local climate characteristics (mean temperature, total precipitation), especially on extreme weather and climate events. The main reason for this failure is the influence of local geographical features on the local climate, as well as other factors related to surrounding large-scale conditions, the influence of which cannot be correctly taken into consideration by the current dynamical global models.Impact models, such as hydrological and crop models, need high resolution information on various climate parameters on the scale of a river basin or a farm, scales that are not available from the usual global climate models. Downscaling techniques produce regional climate information on finer scale, from global climate change scenarios, based on the assumption that there is a systematic link between the large-scale and local climate. Two types of downscaling approaches are known: a) dynamical downscaling is based on regional climate models nested in a global climate model; and b) statistical downscaling is based on developing statistical relationships between large-scale atmospheric variables (predictors), available from global climate models, and observed local-scale variables of interest (predictands).Various types of empirical-statistical downscaling approaches can be placed approximately in linear and nonlinear groupings. The empirical-statistical downscaling techniques focus more on details related to the nonlinear models—their validation, strengths, and weaknesses—in comparison to linear models or the mixed models combining the linear and nonlinear approaches. Stochastic models can be applied to daily and sub-daily precipitation in Romania, with a comparison to dynamical downscaling. Conditional stochastic models are generally specific for daily or sub-daily precipitation as predictand.A complex validation of the nonlinear statistical downscaling models, selection of the large-scale predictors, model ability to reproduce historical trends, extreme events, and the uncertainty related to future downscaled changes are important issues. A better estimation of the uncertainty related to downscaled climate change projections can be achieved by using ensembles of more global climate models as drivers, including their ability to simulate the input in downscaling models. Comparison between future statistical downscaled climate signals and those derived from dynamical downscaling driven by the same global model, including a complex validation of the regional climate models, gives a measure of the reliability of downscaled regional climate changes.

This article demonstrates the utility of the Bayesian approach in forecasting and risk modelling regarding speculative trading strategies in financial futures markets. It first provides an overview of subjective expectations that are motivated as fair prices of futures contracts before discussing the futures markets and a portfolio mean-variance efficiency generalization. In particular, it considers the critical role of hedging to ensue attractive risk-adjusted performance. It also describes general Bayesian dynamic models and specific Bayesian dynamic linear models for assessing risk models in terms of their hedging effectiveness in the context of the risk-adjusted performance of trading strategies. The article showcases applied Bayesian thinking in the context of financial investment management, highlighting the corresponding concepts of betting and investing, prices and expectations, and coherence and arbitrage-free pricing in futures markets over the period 1990–2008.

This chapter locates festivity within the early modern theatre. Through an analysis of Thomas Dekker’sThe Shoemaker’s Holiday, it considers how holidays functioned not as communal rituals but as commodified entertainments; how one-off experiences tied to the cyclical rhythms of the seasons came to be understood as performances that could be enacted year-round—that is, rendered intelligible as theatre within linear models of historical time; and how playing came to be imagined not only as a mode of sociality but also as a vendible commodity. The chapter shows how the commercialization of theatre altered the economic exchanges at the heart of traditional festivity and argues that the professional stage was engaged in a complex project to situate its own performances in relation to existing festive practices. By focusing on early modern contexts, it highlights the ways in which theatricality serves and produces multiple—and, from a modern perspective, often unexpected—cultural functions and effects.

This essay proposes an ethnographic model of disability in contradistinction to existing social and medical models. Building from an ethnomusicological study of the Artism Ensemble, a neurodiverse music performance collective comprising children on the autism spectrum, their coparticipating parents, and professional musicians of diverse musicultural lineage, it discusses issues of autistic self-advocacy, Disability Studies and rights, the anthropology of autism, and epistemological and pragmatic debates and consequences of competing autism discourses and philosophies. The essay argues that musical projects like Artism hold the capacity to contribute productively and meaningfully to the causes of autistic self-advocacy and quality of life, transforming public perceptions of autism from the customary tropes of deficit and disorder to alternate visions of wholeness, ability, and acceptance. Artism is also addressed from a critical vantage point that demonstrates its partial entrenchment in some of the very same negating constructs it ostensibly resists and defies.

This commentary analyses Article 7.4.11 of the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (PICC) concerning the manner of monetary redress. According to Art 7.4.11, damages are to be paid in a lump sum. However, they may be payable in instalments where the nature of the harm makes this appropriate. Damages to be paid in instalments may be subjected to indexation. This provision was considered to be ‘the mode of payment best suited to international trade’. A lump sum payment enables the parties to settle their dispute, draw a line under their relationship (assuming the contract to have been terminated), and move on to new contractual relationships elsewhere. It also avoids the administrative burdens associated with periodical payments of damages.

‘The company level’ looks at the practice of corporate social responsibility (CSR), within companies. It considers four frameworks that companies use to identify and manage their responsibilities: Carroll’s CSR pyramid, the stakeholder model, the triple bottom line approach, and the shared value approach. It then looks at the practices companies engage in, which are distinguished by their respective spheres: community, workplace, marketplace, and environment. The issues of internal organization and integration of CSR are critical to the performance and impact of companies adopting CSR. But how do CSR companies assess and understand the impact of their CSR contributions? The growth of intra-organizational CSR staff indicates a need for appropriately prepared personnel.

This chapter critically reviews the stream of literature that has recently applied the theory of complex networks to the study of international trade. It surveys three interrelated lines of research. First it discusses descriptive work aimed at characterizing the topological properties of the international trade network (ITN) and their evolution. Second, it describes simple models that can replicate and explain those empirical properties. Third, it looks at how the topological properties of the ITN can be used as predictors of the future performance of world countries and the diffusion of economic shocks. Finally, the chapter argues that a promising avenue for future research in this field may involve analyzing in a common network framework not only trade relations but also other bilateral linkages among countries, including, inter alia, finance, investment, and human mobility.

Abstract: This chapter surveys prior scholarly work on country music’s ostensibly conservative relationship to sexuality. It tracks how sexuality becomes linked to other identity markers in songs by artists such as Gretchen Wilson and k.d. lang, as country functions as not only a distinctly classed but also racialized, gendered, and regionalized genre traditionally associated with white working-class Southerners. It probes whether earlier and recent modes of white masculinity and femininity, might or might not be constituted in relationship to queerness and/or blackness. This overview also suggests new ways to expand the critical terrain by taking up case studies: (1) Tanya Tucker, the now-faded star of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, who gained early notoriety for her sexualized performance style and material; and (2) the recent bro-country sensation (Florida Georgia Line), whose young male artists recycle explicitly (hetero) sexual content through pseudo-hip hop rhythms and rapping.

This book explores how timbre shapes musical affect and meaning. Integrating perspectives from musicology with the cognitive sciences, it advances a novel model of timbre interpretation that takes into account the bodily, sensorimotor dynamics of sound production and perception. The contribution of timbre to musical experience is clearest in drastic situations where meaning is itself contested—that is, in polarizing contexts of reception, where the evaluation of “musical” timbre by some listeners collides headlong into a competing claim that it is just “noise.” Taking this commonplace reaction as a starting point, the book explores affect, reception, and timbre semantics through diverse cultural-historical case studies that frustrate the acoustic and perceptual boundary between musical sound and noise. It includes chapters on the racial and gender politics in the reception of free jazz saxophone “screaming” in the late 1960s; an analysis of contested timbral ideals in the performance practices of the Japanese shakuhachi flute; and an historical examination of the overlooked role of “brutal” timbres in the moral panic over heavy metal in the 1980s and 1990s. The book closes with a discussion of the slippery social fault lines that separate perceptions of musical sound from perceptions of noise and the ethical stakes of encountering another’s “aural face.”

After the heyday of the law and literature movement in the 1970s and 1980s, many wondered whether it would retain vitality and influence. Yet in recent years, scholarship in law and literature continues to flourish, broadening into a number of new directions. This collection of essays by twenty-two prominent scholars from literature departments as well as law schools showcases the vibrancy of recent work in the field, at the same time as it takes stock of many of the new directions shaping the interdiscipline. In so doing, New Directions in Law and Literature furnishes an overview of where the field has been, its recent past, and its potential futures. Some of the essays examine the innovative methodological approaches that helped to enlarge the field; among these are concern for globalization, the integration of insights from history and political theory, the application of new theoretical models from affect studies and queer theory, and the expansion of study beyond the text to performance and the image. Other essays instead grapple with particular intersections between law and literature, whether in copyright law, or competing visions of alternatives to marriage, or the role of ornament in the law’s construction of racialized bodies. The assessment of left ventricular (LV) systolic function is one of the most important parts of correct diagnosis, selection of treatment strategy or medications, and prediction of prognosis. Although cardiac magnetic resonance imaging is generally accepted as the gold standard in vivo imaging modality for assessing LV systolic function, its practical use is limited due to its limited availability, high cost, and the presence of conditions precluding its performance such as a pacemaker, claustrophobia, and severe arrhythmia. Thus, transthoracic echocardiography is a first-line imaging modality employed in daily practice and has been widely used. Since the first attempts with M-mode approach, remarkable improvements have been made with the advent of two-dimensional echocardiography, and more recently three-dimensional echocardiography, with high accuracy and reproducibility. More sophisticated methodologies such as strain imaging, based on Doppler or speckle tracking techniques, provide a more sensitive and quantitative measurement of myocardial contractility, and are gaining a place in common daily practice. This chapter describes different modalities that have been used for assessment of LV systolic function based on echocardiography, and is grossly composed of two parts: LV global systolic function and LV regional or segmental systolic function. For better application of these conventional and novel methods of assessing LV systolic function, strengths and pitfalls of these techniques should be acknowledged.
