Abstract:
Since the Fukushima accident, radiation risk perception has been of public concern. Factors related to regional differences in radiation risk perception and the role that knowledge of radiation effects plays are still not clearly understood. Here, we first assessed the validity of the Lindell radiation risk perception scale by comparing it with the mortality rate of traffic accidents. We then investigated the relationship between the perceptions and both the geographical regions and the knowledge of genetic effects and, further, verified the mediating role of knowledge in the perception. The sample comprised of 832 participants who responded to an online questionnaire in August 2018 from Tokyo and Fukushima. There was a significant association between the Lindell scale and the perceived magnitude of genetic risk relative to traffic accident mortality. Knowledge of genetic effects, after the atomic bombs, was associated with perceptions of lower genetic risks. The relationship between geographical region and risk perception was mediated by knowledge. However, approximately 40% of those who had knowledge still perceived a high risk, indicating that perception is not governed by knowledge alone. In addition to efforts to share knowledge, it is important to interactively communicate regarding risk to alleviate the anxiety felt by individuals.

Abstract:
Plums are primarily marketed for fresh consumption, canning, freezing, jam and jelly. Unfortunately, plum consumption has remained steady or declined. Consumers complain about a lack of flavor quality but are willing to pay for higher quality. Thus, absence of flavor and cold storage disorders are the main barriers to consumption. Plum cultivars are sensitive to gel breakdown, flesh browning and ‘off flavors’. Consumer approval and postharvest life are controlled by genotype, quality attributes, harvest date and proper postharvest handling. A consumer quality index (CQI) based on soluble solids concentration (SSC) and minimum firmness is proposed to maximize flavor and postharvest life. In most cases, late harvest increases quality attributes. Our work and industry experience demonstrated that using critical bruising thresholds (CBT) based on minimum firmness measured at harvest acts as a reliable predictor of how late to harvest safely for maximum visual and sensory quality. Plums tolerated late harvest well because of their high tolerance to bruising damage, but suitable postharvest temperature management and selling within the potential postharvest life are required to maintain flavor and avoid the beginning of chilling injury. Thus, to maximize flavor and postharvest life, a CQI based on SSC and minimum firmness measured at consumption is proposed. This article provides guidance on using this CQI, combined with proper postharvest handling techniques, such as correct harvest date determination and temperature management, to maintain quality and increase consumption.

Abstract:
The Closet Killer: Illustrations of the non-masculine murderer in One Step Behind and Night Sister. This article investigates themes of masculinity and sexuality in two Scandinavian crime narratives, One Step Behind (Steget efter) by Henning Mankell and Night Sister (Nattsystern) by Unni Lindell. The murderers in these novels reject traditional masculinity and instead invite femininity. This lack of masculinity is emphasized through the heterosexual frame narrative and is also linked to the violent crimes that are committed. Some heavy symbolism borrowed from the horror film genre is also investigated – such as mirrors and masks – and the use of these tropes, I argue, links the homosexual to the monster.

Abstract:
Contaminated food and food contamination events occur frequently and constitute a major threat to the public. A food warning/recall is the primary method used by organizations to reduce the public's exposure when an unacceptable risk has been identified. This analysis examines the risk communication processes associated with the food warning/recall. We draw on the work of Teratanavat, Hooker and Salin (2002) and Teratanavat and Hooker (2004) regarding the dynamics of food recalls; Seeger, Sellnow, and Ulmer (2003) and Reynolds and Seeger (2005) regarding crisis communication; and Lindell and Perry (1992), Mileti and Sorensen (1990), and Mileti and Peek (2000) regarding public warning models to develop a four stage model of the communication processes associated with the food recall.

Abstract:
The present system of radiological protection has evolved with the advancement of science; evolution of ethical and societal values; and the lessons of our individual, collective, and historical experience. In communicating with each other and members of the public, words are often not enough to completely relay thoughts, ideas, or experiences. Art is a shared experience, beyond the spoken language, where many can find common ground. This paper provides several examples of utilising the visual arts, cinema, and popular culture for communication in different contexts, with discussion of how each relates to the ethical values of the system of radiological protection. In this way, we find inter-relationships between science, ethics, and experience. Experience improves understanding; empathy, or the awareness and feeling of another’s experience, can lead to similar understanding. Drawing on art and the broader human experience will help us improve our communication, promote transparency, and encourage empathy. Through this, we will be more likely to develop trust with stakeholders, which is an essential, yet challenging, aspect of radiological protection.

A space X is said to be set star-Lindelöf if for each nonempty subset A of X and each collection U of open sets in X such that A ⊆⋃U, there is a countable subset V of U such that A ⊆ St (⋃V,U). The class of set star-Lindelöf spaces lie between the class of Lindel öf spaces and the class of star-Lindelöf spaces. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between set star-Lindelöf spaces and other related spaces by providing some suitable examples and study the topological properties of set star-Lindelöf spaces.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this research, effects of aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) and methyl jasmonate (MeJA) applied 2 weeks ahead of estimated harvest date on fruit color, firmness and individual phenolic compounds of three plum varieties wereinvestigated during the cold storage. Fruits of “BlackAmber”, “Black Beauty” and “Fortune” were kept at 0 ± 0.5°C temperature and 90 ± 5% relative humidity for 4 weeks. During the storage, decreases in L*, chroma and hue angle values were observed. AVG treatments differed significantly (p < 0.05) by control and MeJA treatment. In all plum varieties, AVG treatment resulted in significant increases in flesh firmness at the end of storage. MeJA increased significantly the firmness of “Black Beauty” and “Fortune” fruit at the end of storage. Chlorogenic acid was detected as major phenolic compound in plum varieties. AVG treatment to “Black Amber” fruit increased the contents of chlorogenic and p-coumaric acid during storage, whereas it reduced chlorogenic and p-coumaric acid content in “Fortune” fruit. MeJA treatment led to not only increase the contents of rutin, ferulic acid and naringenin in the fruits of “Black Beauty” and “Fortune” varieties during the storage but also significantly increase the kaempferol content in “Black Amber” and “Black Beauty” fruits. While AVG treatment compared to control significantly decreased the contents of chlorogenic acid, quercetin and naringenin in “Black Amber” fruits at the end of cold storage, it increased content of p-coumaric acid. At the end of storage, AVG and MeJA treatments reduced significantly the content of ferulic acid in “Black Beauty” fruits. In addition, MeJA treatment significantly increased chlorogenic acid, ferulic acid and kaempferol contents in “Fortune” fruits.

Abstract:
The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) is recognised as the de-facto world authority in the field of radiological protection. The ICRP Recommendations have been used as a basis for regulations and policy in almost every country, and with the current review and revision of the System of Radiological Protection, it will continue to make significant contributions in radiation safety for patients, workers, the public, and the environment. In a society undergoing significant change, it is necessary to give careful thought to which groups will be perceived as authoritative organisations by the constituents of the future. The ideal form of an authoritative organisation in the new society of the future is to continue to show how it came to make such recommendations, how it reflected the opinions of interested parties in the process, and how it discloses its records with as much transparency as possible. The question now is what we must do to ensure that decision-making advances in a way that not only makes sense to the present generation, but will be easily consumed by future generations. The path that ICRP is taking to formulate the next set of General Recommendations is doing just that, in line with the key procedural values of INCLUSIVE, ACCOUNTABLE, AND TRANSPARENT.

Abstract:
Abstract Previous studies from our laboratory have demonstrated that B cells play an important role in the initiation and maintenance of chronic allergic lung disease (asthma), and ascribed much of this role to antigen presentation (Lindell et al. PLoSONE 2008). Although present at higher frequency than other organs, antibody secreting B cells in the lungs represent a small proportion (<0.1%) of the overall B cells in the lungs. As alternative strategies to study the role of B cells in this disease, we have used novel flow cytometric techniques to detect the de novo expansion of antigen-specific B cells during allergic lung disease, as well as utilizing adoptive transfer of naive antigen-specific B cells. Mice were immunized with hen egg lysozyme and a cohort of these mice received adoptive transfers of HEL-specific B cells from MD4 mice. Our data indicate that the addition of antigen-specific B cells augmented mucus production in the lungs. Mechanistically, this was associated with increased T cell responses in the lungs (a 4-fold increase in CD69+ CD4+ and CD8+ T cells), significantly higher levels of IL-13 and IL-17a, as well as overall inflammation, although very few HEL+ B cells were found in the lungs, and we observed no increase in HEL-specific antibodies. These data suggest that B cells predominantly contribute to allergic disease by amplification of the T cell response, rather than via the production of antibodies.

Abstract:
Medical exposures form the largest manmade contributor to total ionising radiation exposure of the UK population. In recent years, new technologies have been developed to improve treatment and prognosis of individuals treated with radiation for diseases such as cancer. However, there is evidence of public, patient, and medical professional concern that radiation protection regulations and practices, as well as understanding of potential long-term adverse health effects of radiation exposure (in the context of other health risks), have not always ‘kept pace’ with technological developments in this field. This is a truly complex, multi-disciplinary problem for the modern world. The ‘Radiation Theme’ of the Public Health England and Newcastle University Health Protection Research Unit on ‘Chemical and Radiation Threats and Hazards’ is addressing this need, with a key focus on a genuinely interdisciplinary approach bringing together world-leading epidemiologists, radiation biologists, clinicians, statisticians, and artists. In addition, the project has a strong grounding in public, patient, and medical professional involvement in research. Similarly, the EU-CONCERT-funded LDLensRad project seeks to understand the mechanisms of action of low-dose ionising radiation in the lens of the eye, and the potential contribution to the development of cataract – in contemporary research, such projects will only be considered successful when they make use of expertise from a variety of fields and when they are able to demonstrate that the outputs are not only of benefit to society, but that society understands and welcomes the benefits. Finally, successful engagement, training, and retention of early career scientists within this field is crucial for sustainability of the research. Herein, the contribution of embedded interdisciplinary working, stakeholder involvement, and training of early career scientists to recent advancements in the field of medical (and wider) radiation protection research is discussed and considered.

Abstract:
This study aims to analyze the lexical choice tendency and ability to distinguish British and American English lexical. The participants were 20 students of the English Education Program in one of the state universities in Bandung. This research used the qualitative descriptive method to analyze the data. To collect the data, this research used tests as a technique. The lexical that were examined in the tests were based on Sukmawati (2017). The participants were given tests that were split into two parts in the form of multiple choices to examine the lexical choice tendency and measure the ability to distinguish British and American English lexical. The number of questions was 30 for each test, so the total number was 60 questions. The computation for the current study used simple calculation central tendency which was mean score, also a percentage, and tendency formula. The results show that the English Education Program students were able to be consistent in their lexical choice with most of the students tending to American English at the rate of 60%, followed by British English at the rate of 25%, and the rest 15% were still not able to be consistent in their lexical choice as they tend to Mix. The students were also able to distinguish British and American English lexical as they can attribute the examined lexical items to the right variety with the mean score of 58.5 that categorized into the average level. This indicates that the results of the current study are in contrast with Lindell (2014) who revealed the students tend to mix and are unable to distinguish British and American English lexical.
