Dakle, on sam središnja je tema njegovih eseja. U svojoj performativnoj umjetnosti, Lin konstruira svoje »sebstvo« i oblikuje model filozofijskog života duboko ukorijenjenog u tradiciju kineske kulture dokolice. Abstract:
Po opublikowaniu My Country My People (1935) oraz The Importance of Living (1937) Lin osiągnął wielką sławę jako „filozof chiński”, jednak jego własna myśl filozoficzna, rozproszona w wielu tekstach, rzadko bywała przedmiotem zainteresowania uczonych.

Abstract:
Abstract Interleukin-1 (IL-1) has been shown to stimulate hematopoietic progenitor cell growth both in vitro and in vivo. Although IL-1 alone lacks the ability to promote hematopoietic progenitor growth in vitro, it is a potent synergistic factor in combination with other colony- stimulating factors (CSFs). Because it was unknown whether type I (p80), type II (p68), or other IL-1-binding proteins mediated the synergistic effects of IL-1 on purified progenitor cells, we used the difference in immunoreactivity between type I and type II IL-1 receptor (IL-1R) to better assess the role of these receptors in hematopoietic progenitor growth. Therefore, the synergistic effects of IL-1 alpha on IL-3-, CSF-1-, and granulocyte macrophage (GM)-CSF-induced progenitor growth, both in CFU-c and single-cell assays, were determined in the presence of monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) 35F5 and 4E2 that block the binding of IL-1 alpha to type I and type II IL-1R, respectively. The synergistic effect of IL-1 alpha on IL-3 responsive Lin- and Lin(-)-Thy- 1+ progenitors was indirectly mediated and could be inhibited by MoAb 35F5. In contrast, IL-1 alpha directly synergized with CSF-1 and GM-CSF to promote progenitor cell growth. The direct synergistic effect of IL- 1 alpha on CSF-1-induced progenitor growth was observed in all progenitor populations examined (Lin-, Lin-Thy-1+, and Lin-Thy-1-) and was inhibited by MoAb 35F5. However, the direct synergistic effect of IL-1 alpha on GM-CSF-responsive progenitors. Lin- and Lin-Thy-1+, was partially inhibited by MoAb 35F5. In contrast, the MoAb antitype II IL- 1R (MoAb 4E2) could not inhibit the direct synergistic effects of IL-1 alpha on CSF-1- or GM-CSF-induced progenitor growth. Thus, IL-1 alpha directly and indirectly stimulates the growth and differentiation of purified progenitors through the type I IL-1R but not the type II IL-1R.

Abstract:
Pectins are vegetal polysaccharide with biological effects as inhibitor of cancer progression and immunomodulators. In this work, we assessed the effect of modified pectins from Flax on the osteoclastic bone resorbing activity. Demonstrating that oligogalacturonate (oGal) exerted a potent inhibitory effect on bone resorption linked to an inhibition of type I collagen degradation. By studying the in vitro degradation of type I collagen, we showed that oGal inhbitory effect is due to an effect on collagen, rather than a direct effect on enzymes which have the ability to degrade collagen. Using Plasmon surface resonance and magnetic resonance nuclear, we demonstrated a potent molecular interaction between oGal and collagen. These results suggest that inhibition of collagen degradation by oGal could be due to a specific interaction with collagen rendering the collagenolysis mediated by enzymes much less efficient. In a second part of the studyl, we then tested their effect on other biological processes where collagenolysis is involved. , such as cancer metastasis and SMC mineralization Using a human breast carcinoma cell mode, we demonstrated that oGal reduced both adhesion on bone matrix and invasion through collagen I matrix, suggesting that oGal may reduce cancer progression. We also demonstrated that oGal inhibited the mineralization induced by vascular smooth muscle cells. Taking together, these data suggest that oGal may have some interest as pharmacological compounds. Futher studies would be necessary to assess more precisely their mechanism of action as well as their possible route of administration

Cocco, Gabriele. "The Old English Gnomic Poems Maxims I and Maxims II in the Exeter Book and MS. Cotton Tiberius B.i: A Critical Edition with a Variorum Commentary." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Padova, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/11577/3422262.

Full text
Abstract:
Gnomic poetry plays a fundamental part of the so-called Old English Wisdom Literature. The Anglo-Saxons showed a strong tendency to inspect, wonder about, and ponder on the primary aspects of human thought, life and essence. This frame of mind is characterised by sequences of concise, tightly-structured proverbial utterances. Such briefness endows gnomic poetry with a sharp, authoritative force. The Anglo-Saxon scop turns to a gnome, maxim, proverb, laconic, sententious saying to compose alliterative verses on native folklore and traditional patterns of thinking. In Old English literature, gnomic poetry inextricably blends pious Christian elements with ancient themes of a heathen far-flung Germanic tradition. Gnomic verses not only deal with folklore, they also stand as a powerful and elaborate literary device to affirm a moral, or even to portray virtues or vices. Such a literary sensibility stands in the middle between a Christian religious tradition which traces its roots back to Old Testament proverbs and the typical Germanic wisdom-competition poems such as Old Norse Vǫluspá, Vafþruðnismál, Heiðreks Saga and so forth. Yet, the Anglo-Saxon scop used the gnomic verse as a reliable fund of ethical dictum on which he would generally call to celebrate, in a poem, an episode worthy of celebration or to restate an accepted truth. There are extant heterogeneous ‘compilations’ of gnomic verse to which scholars normally refer as Maxims I and II. Furthermore, there are some other examples to be found in other poems, such as in The Wanderer or in Beowulf. The Exeter Book and BL MS. Cotton Tiberius B.i contain the utmost examples of gnomic passages. The vivid content of the Maxims caused a variety of opinions relating to both the significance of the style of these poems and the provenance of its content based on large number of literary sources. The purpose of this Doctoral dissertation is to carry out a scrutiny of the Old English gnomic tradition, focusing on Maxims I and II, supply an edition of the texts, write a variorum commentary and an analytic glossary. At the same time, this work aims to take into consecration the reason such a theme dendritically sprouts and suddenly reaches new heights in some crucial parts of Old English literature.

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates queen Elizabeth I's practices as a letterwriter. Recent developments in the fields of study concerned with the composition, circulation and reception of texts have elicited a growing interest into the forms and functions of Early Modern letters, thus equipping scholarship with a new framework in which to situate their texts and with new tools to analyse them (i.e. Daybell, 2006 and 2009; Schneider, 2005; Stewart and Wolfe, 2004). I argue that starting from the evidence of primary sources, such tools may be employed to take a fresh look at the Queen’s letters, in order to investigate in what ways the monarch's authorship can be assessed and to elucidate more details about the procedures of royal epistolary exchanges. The dissertation is structured into two parts. The first part describes the historical, physical and cultural setting in which letters by the Queen were initiated, composed, read and dispatched. In particular, chapter 2 provides an overview of the years 1590-1596 from a historical perspective and it addresses the structure and inner workings of the Elizabethan secretariat. Chapter 3 surveys the practices of letterwriting in Renaissance England focussing on letterwriting in the institutionalised court milieu. The second part deals with the evidence of letters themselves. It sets out with a survey of the Elizabethan archives and the material they preserve, to proceed then to the selection of sources and a presentation of the methodology in chapter 4. Chapter 5 analyses the documentary evidence of the selected royal missives in a material perspective and chapter 6 provides a closer examination of a number of signet, familiar and diplomatic letters by the Queen as case studies.

Bourlard, Thierry. Rouen, 1999. http://www.theses.fr/1999ROUES047.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Scottish philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre has famously observed that man is “essentially a story-telling animal”. There are multiple ways and platforms that people can adopt to tell their stories. However, there is a recent and particular enthusiasm in the use of Instagram, by so-called “influencers” to specifically advertise their lifestyles… and themselves, so to speak. This master’s thesis thus focuses on the use of non-fictional, autobiographical and visual narratives – i.e. first-person depictions of life experiences through Instagram posts – and their relationship to (online) identity. It addresses the questions of how meaning is made on a visual-based social media like Instagram and how identity and “storyshowing” are intrinsically connected. For this purpose, we will examine the narratives of five European Instagram lifestyle influencers, who use English as a lingua franca to communicate with their followers: the Dutch Rianne Meijer, the Italian Chiara Ferragni, the Swedish Janni Olsson Delér, the Austrian Virginia Rox and the French Jeanne Damas. In the first chapter, we will briefly explore the evolution of storytelling over the last decade and the recent phenomenon of Instagram influencers. We will then investigate the special place of identity within Instagram storytelling. Additionally, we will take a closer look at how our ‘influencers of interest’ give meaning to their stories and what is the source of their popularity. Finally, we will review some of Instagram key topics trough a qualitative and visual analysis of the five aforementioned influencers’ posts on the social media platform. As a conclusion, we will note that Instagram influencers give and make sense of their stories and online identity by mimicking or absorbing (whether on a conscious level or not) the narratives of their peers, thus creating a globalized identity that allows them to remain part of the worldwide Instagram community.

Galeati, Martina <1994&gt. "I see, I understand, I speak. How the dependency model with vulnerable adult learners supports oral skills." Master's Degree Thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/19333.

Full text
Abstract:
The research aims to demonstrate that the application of the dependency model in a literacy course can assist the processes of language acquisition. The investigation is dedicated to low literate students (Pre-A1). Many studies affirm that the illiterate's thought is anchored to the concrete dimension and that his thought is made up of images. Therefore, the use of images to support the understanding of the meaning of the verb and the use of color-coding schemes can facilitate the recognition of the structure of SVO sentences and facilitate, at a later stage, the ability to produce sentences more independently and conscientiously in a second language. Each speaker constructs and decodes sentences starting from the meaning of the verb, which defines the number of actants needed. This process takes place regardless of the mother tongue. The meaning of each verb can be identified starting from the competence that each speaker has with respect to their L1. As Jezek (2005) points out, the learner of an L2 already has competence in L1 and therefore is aware, more or less explicitly, of the existence of certain syntactic structures associated with a verb, which express different events. The great novelty of the dependency model is the possibility of combining the abstract level of the language (system) with the practical and daily one (text).

Abstract:
Rozprawa doktorska zatytułowana "Struktury i sensy komiczne metafikcji w dramacie. Przeprowadzona weryfikacja elementów modelu w kierunku postmodernistycznych realizacji wykazała odrębność Pirandellowskiego i Gombrowiczowskiego komizmu metafikcyjnego, jako sygnału postmodernistycznych konotacji i antecedencji, w zestawieniu z sensu stricto postmodernistycznym komizmem metafikcyjnym w wydaniu Allenowskim.
The main objective of the doctoral dissertation entitled "Comic structures and senses of metafiction in drama. A comparative study" is to reveal a comic potential of metafiction and to exemplify this phenomenon by Luigi Pirandello’s and Witold Gombrowicz’s theatrical output. The scientific literature lacks a separate, comprehensive or detailed study of metafiction as a source of humour. Neither a comparative study of metafictional humour in both Pirandello’s and Gombrowicz’s theatrical output, nor any research on this phenomenon in dramas of each of the two authors has been developed so far. Nevertheless, theatrical works of the two authors constitute a rich material for comparative research on the comic structures and senses of metafiction, showing important resemblances and analogies in this regard. The research revealed analogous metafictional structures (intertextuality, irony, metafictional characters and categories related to them, i.e. metalepsis, grotesque, absurd and fluidity) in the dramas of both authors and proved that they are determinants of comic senses. The comparative analysis of metafictional structures and of the respective comic phenomena in Pirandello’s and Gombrowicz’s dramas enabled to draw the relations between the theatrical works of the two authors and to develop a comic model based on metafiction. Verification of the proposed comic model proved the distinctness of Pirandello’s and Gombrowicz's metafictional humour, as a sign of postmodern connotations, in comparison to a strictly postmodernist metafictional humour present in Woody Allen’s works. The distinctive difference between the three playwrights is that in the case of the Italian and Polish author the metafiction first of all expresses certain artistic and existential dilemmas, while its comical overtones are secondary, whereas in the case of the American writer the metafiction is adopted - specifically because of the comic potential encoded in it - as a tool of postmodern literary play with a reader.

Abstract:
Since the reign of Juan II and especially Queen Isabel I of Castile, we have found that silk fabrics had displaced expensive dyed wool cloths from the first place, at least among the privileged groups. At the same time, a very fine linen fabric, the holanda spread in a spectacular way, at least in the case of the House of Isabel I, especially as body linen and household line. In this article, we discuss how these changes could be transmitted downwards through some examples of different social groups - nobility, townspeople, peasants - considering the economic and social limitations that would have been relevant in its diffusion.

Abstract:
Numerically simulating the six-degrees-of-freedom response motions of a ship executing an unsteady maneuver in a two-dimensional wave environment is one of the most challenging tasks in seakeeping. Mathematical difficulties may occur for several reasons. For example, the rapid change in encounter frequencies may cause a numerical dynamics imbalance. Furthermore, in order to predict the ship’s track (ship heading) accurately, the rudder forces and two-dimensional drift forces must be predicted accurately; otherwise, erroneously predicted headings can ultimately lead to obtaining entirely different ship motions. To overcome these problems, we added a well-behaved, pre-conditional iterative method into the hybrid flow-based, fully-nonlinear ship motion model, DiSSEL (Digital, Self-consistent Ship Experimental Laboratory), in a two-dimensional wave environment. DiSSEL includes two components: a ship-wave interactions model (Lin et al., 2005[1], Lin and Kuang, 2006[2]), and a solid body motions interactions model (Lin and Kuang 2010[3]). The rudder and appendage forces (Lin et al, 2010[4]) are included in the solid body motions component. This refined model is able to overcome the mathematical dynamics imbalance when the encounter frequency rapidly changes as well as accurately calculate the forces on the hull and rudders. Finally the simulations of ship response motions at various relative headings and at various forward speeds in a two-dimensional seaway will be benchmarked against experimental model data for the test cases.

Abstract:
Previous research showed that information quality, system quality, and service quality affect perceived usefulness and the perceived ease of use for educational platforms (Tsai, YY., Chao, CM., Lin, HM. et al. Qual Quant, 2018); other authors debate on how they adopt and embed technology into their learning activities (Moreno V, Cavazotte F, Alves, I, 2017); students' perceptions regarding the usefulness and easiness of positive use for e-learning platforms is strongly influenced by their intention to effectively use those platforms and by students' cognitive absorption and self-efficacy, as well as by system interactivity and facilitating conditions. Our research is focused on empirical observation that suggests that there is a perceived difference between learners competencies and effectiveness regarding the on-line learning platforms than the regular frequency study programs. To this respect we focused on the same type and content bachelor degree study programme in 2 versions: distance learning using on-line learning platforms (with a small part of face-to-face tutorials) than full-time learning (based on face-to-face study courses and seminars). We were interested in perception and student consciousness on difference between those 2 students groups. The main assumption is that student identity is built around the perception on the learning environment and the perception on effectiveness in bachelor degree programs; so that, the easiness and level of satisfaction on learning on-line tools could be an impediment on understanding and choosing the distance learning programme than full-time learning programme. So, we put the two perception and identity student awareness is different in the 2 bachelor degree programmes; also, we put those identity awareness structures into the light of comparison so that conclusions towards quality perception and educational marketing would be more effective and valuable.

Abstract:
Platelet-collagen interaction is important in primary hemostasis and thrombosis. However, little is known about the interaction of platelets with genetically distinct collagen types I, III, IV, and V (Cl, ClII, CIV, CV) in their triple helical form. Here we report on the interaction of gel- filtered platelets with surfaces coated with monomeric collagen isotypes and the binding of 125-iodine-labeled Cl to platelets. It was shown that the binding of monomeric Cl is dose and time-dependent, saturable and specific, since it is competitively inhibited by unlabeled Cl, but not by unlabeled CV. Scatchard analysis reveals a receptor-class with a Kd of 2.5 x 10−8M. The result suggests that the different collagen isotypes may bind to platelets through various specific binding sites. Confirming that, we demonstrated, that interaction of platelets with collagen-coated surfaces is associated with the activation of different intra- and extracellular signal transduction systems: Initial attachment of discoid platelets to a CV-substrate does not induce neither synthesis of prostanoids nor changes of cyclic AMP-level. Adhesion and massive spreading of platelets on a CIV-substrate result in a decrease of stimulated cAMP-level without any synthesis of prostanoids. Only thrombus-formation during interaction of platelets with Cl- or CHI-coated surfaces is accompanied by a parallel decrease of cAMP and massive synthesis of platelet prostanoids. Additionally, it was shown that the stable prostacyclin analogue, carbacyc-lin, inhibited thrombus-formation and platelet spreading, whereas the PGH2/TXA2-receptor antagonists, 13-Azaprostanoic acid ana BM 13.177, completely inhibited thrombus-formation without any effect on platelet spreading.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to provide comprehensive empirical evidence on recent theories that link democracy and income inequality for the period 1960-1995. In simple cross-country regressions I find a non-monotonic link between these two variables when using ordinary least squares, instrumental variables, and Eusufzai tests. Since these results cannot be taken as "true" time series findings, even though recent theories that explain such a link are, I also employ recent methods applied to dynamic models on panel data. These techniques allow accounting for potential simultaneity and heterogeneity problems. Using the preferred econometric methodology, I also find support for the existence of a political Kuznets curve. Moreover, it appears that income inequality is unconditionally persistent. Results hold for two different democracy proxies and when sensitivity analysis is applied.
