Abstract:
Let us return to people and food, and another simple equation. The number of people per hectare of arable land, calculated over large regions, looks like a climatic distribution. I guessed at the form of the equation, calculated what the population per arable hectare was on the basis of climate, and compared it with the situation as observed. The correlation between them is 0.998. (See Fig. 8.) It is an almost perfect relationship. The equation relates population per arable hectare to rainfall and temperature, and ultimately to sunlight and water. If one enters Fig. 9, which is a graph of the equation, with the temperature, and finds the intersection with the appropriate rainfall curve, one can see how many people are currently fed from an arable hectare.

Abstract:
X-ray graphite optics consists of thin layers of Pyrolytic Graphite (PG) attached to a substrate of focusing shape. Pyrolytic Graphite is a perfect artificial graphite obtained by annealing of carbon deposit at temperatures about 3000 °C under deformation. By varying the annealing conditions, one could get PG of different mosaic structure and mechanical properties. A wide variability of the reflecting layer characteristics and optics shape makes the graphite optics useful in an extended range of applications. The optics could be adjusted to applications that require moderate resolution as EDXRF (energy dispersive X-Ray fluorescence) and as well as for high-resolution applications as EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure), XANES (X-ray absorption near-edge structure) and XES (X-ray emission spectroscopy). To realize the optics with theoretically optimized parameters the relationship between the production procedure and the mosaicity and reflectivity of the optics was experimentally studied. The influence of thickness, the type of PG (Highly Oriented PG (HOPG) or Highly Annealed PG (HAPG)) and substrate characteristics on the optics performance is presented.

Abstract:
One of the most important aspects of the new international reality is the tendency to form regional blocks. The creation of blocks around the world is a development promotion strategy for the periphery countries and, especially to the African states, which are characterized by a peculiar history of marginalization, countries with dramatic poverty and misery, cycles of political and military instabilities, consequences of centuries of explorations promoted by many colonial powers. As a way to solve part of problems that affect the continent, African leaders, believe in economic and political integration as one of the alternatives. Concerning West African countries, the integration enables to joint coordination in solving the internal problems of the region and the challenges of globalization. This thesis aims to analyze the inclusion of Guinea-Bissau in the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU). Thus, the work aims to answer two questions: to what extent WAEMU can contribute to economic and social development of Guinea-Bissau, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of Guinea-Bissau in the WAEMU. It starts from the assumption that such union is very useful for the Portuguese-speaking country, once it offers a huge support in its monetary and fiscal policy, not to mention the opening of new markets, although the cycle of political instability has been one of the main obstacles to Guinea-Bissau performance in the block. It is noteworthy that this work was done in the basis of research in various literature works, and during the construction of this thesis, we traveled to the country, which is the object of our study, where we obtained some primary data through the contact we had with several leaders of the country related to the subject. However, it is concluded that the inclusion of Guinea - Bissau in WAEMU happened rashly without in depth studies. Although the country on one hand, has achieved one of its goals to stabilize prices and control inflation, as found in union an important source of funding, the BOAD (Banque Ouest Africaine de Development) to develop, rehabilitate and modernize its infrastructure. On the other hand, the performance of Guinea-Bissau in the block has been affected by the instabilities cycle that has hampered the development of a strategy that would allow the development gains, either through international trade or through the capture of foreign investment; with this, the country became dependent on its partners in the block.

Abstract:
This report investigates research opportunities in manned suborbital flights and gives future recommendations for relevant parties to seize such opportunities. The objective is to make a summary of the current state and elaborate on possible future steps to take. The study uses a research- and analysis-based approach, with stakeholder interviews being an important contribution to the analysis, as well as open-source mate-rials such as market analyses and research papers. Emerging suborbital flight vehicle developers are studied, as well as the future demand for suborbital flights. Major space research areas are investigated in terms of current experiments conducted, platforms used for experiments and their drivers and drawbacks, and future goals and dreams. The demand for suborbital flights is expected to grow up to 40% in coming years, out of which space research will account for 24%. Key characteristics of currently used platforms are microgravity time and level, payload capacity, flight and re-flight opportunities, launch flex-ibility and cost. The cost per kg of payload for suborbital flights is a competitive k€0.5-5. Suborbital flights can fill a gap in research in biology, physiology and human research, astrobiology/exobiolgy, atmo-spheric physics, space technology, and education. There are also fu-ture opportunities for satellite launch, with a growing demand for small-satellite launches. Future recommendations for Sweden are to develop institutional support for suborbital flights on an EU level, and to initi-ate collaborations for a suborbital flights program with a vehicle concept that provides better microgravity time and level than parabolic flights, and offers the possibility to have a human operator.

Wilson, Kirsty. "Potential Cross-Border Double Taxation on Death Limits Global Investment Opportunities for Long Term South African Resident Investors - demonstrated through an analysis of the international tax consequences that arise for a South African resident who holds an investment in a portfolio of stock listed in the United States of America at the date of death." Master's thesis, Faculty of Commerce, 2019. https://hdl.handle.net/11427/31775.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the impact of the imposition of both estate duty and capital gains tax (CGT) by South Africa (SA) on South African resident investors at the date of death.1 The focus of this dissertation, within this chosen area of study, is the effect of the imposition of these two taxes on cross-border transactions; this study examines the international tax consequences that arise on death, should a SA resident investor hold foreign situs assets at such time. The study uses a portfolio of stock listed in the United States of America (US) to demonstrate that the imposition of both estate duty and CGT by SA at the date of death may result in unresolved double taxation or at the very least the imposition of taxes that are confiscatory, excessive or prejudicial to SA resident investors. In order to demonstrate that double taxation may exist or that confiscatory, excessive and prejudicial taxes may arise, the study outlines the current legislation in SA and the US, as well as the relevant unilateral and bilateral relief available to such an investor. The study then goes on to determine the global tax liability that would result for the investor in question at the date of death. After determining the global tax liability, the study analyses whether the relief available to the investor is sufficient in preventing double taxation or taxes that may be considered prejudicial, confiscatory and/or excessive. Where it is found that double taxation persists or prejudicial, excessive and confiscatory taxes exists, the study recommends action that should be taken by the relevant authorities to remedy such concerns.

Abstract:
Pipeline in-line inspections (ILI) are one of the primary methods used to assess the integrity of operating oil and gas pipelines. These inspections can be complicated to conduct due to a variety of reasons ranging from operational limits (high/low flow velocity, wall thickness, pipeline extreme depth or pressure, etc.) to limits inherent to the inspection technology. Often these complexities are overcome with tools customized to a specific pipeline. Although this has been effective for singular pipeline inspections, a more industry-wide approach should be considered to develop broader solutions. This paper discusses the opportunities to enhance ILI and suggests a ranking of priorities for technology development.

Abstract:
Satellite communication plays an important role in the global connectivity ecosystem. It connects rural and remote populations, provides backhaul connectivity to mobile cellular networks, and enables rapid communications for emergency and disaster responses. Low Earth orbit constellations may prove to be transformational to the connectivity landscape based on their global coverage and their suitability for areas not served by fiber optic cable networks. The Asian Development Bank’s developing member countries are well placed to benefit from this expansion of internet connectivity. It will be particularly valuable for small island developing states and landlocked developing countries with limited international bandwidth internet.

Abstract:
In 2016 the government of Vanuatu introduced a National Gender Equality Policy. A second phase of the policy will be implemented in 2020–2024. Insights from key informants working on gender in Vanuatu reveal that there have been some positive developments in the first policy phase. A number of challenges remain, however, including limited capacity in a number of key institutions, and resistance to progress caused by prevailing conservative and patriarchal values and beliefs in Vanuatu. In the absence of other legal instruments for LGBTQI+/SOGI equality, perspectives vary on whether this aspect of gender equality should be included in the revised policy.

The lessons of the COVID-19 crisis highlighted the challenges of managing a global pandemic response due to the difference in regional and local resources, culture, and political systems. Although there may not be a uniform crisis management strategy that the world can agree on, next-generation vertical flight vehicles could be used to distribute limited medical equipment, supplies, and personnel to hot spots faster than conventional aircraft or ground vehicles. However, creating this capability is not easy. This SAE EDGE™ Research Report by Johnny Doo addresses the opportunities and challenges of establishing an eVTOL fleet, including deployment, supporting infrastructure, and fleet management.

Chamberlin, Jordan, and James Sumberg. Youth, Land and Rural Livelihoods in Africa. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), May 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ids.2021.040.

Abstract:
Rural economic transformations in Africa are generating new opportunities to engage with agricultural value chains. However, many young people are said to be locked out of such opportunities because of limited access to farmland, which pushes them out of agriculture and rural areas, and/or hinders their autonomy. This framing of the ‘land problem’ imperfectly reflects rural young people’s livelihoods in much of sub-Saharan Africa, and therefore does not provide a solid basis for policy. Policy-relevant discussions must consider the diversity of rural contexts, broader land dynamics and more nuanced depictions of youth engagement with the rural economy.

Almasri, Shaddin. A Matter of Cash and Resilience: Lessons from a review of Oxfam's incentive-based volunteering programmes in Za'atari camp. Oxfam, July 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.21201/2020.7727.

Abstract:
With limited job opportunities available to Syrian refugees living in Za’atari camp in Jordan, incentive-based volunteering (IBV) programmes remain one of the main sources of income for thousands of camp residents. A previous Effectiveness Review conducted by Oxfam on household income in Za’atari camp found that those engaged in IBV activities reported a 28% increase in their wealth between 2014 and 2018, as opposed to a 4% decline for those who were not engaged. Although IBV programmes are not a substitute for sustainable job opportunities, they play a vital role in injecting cash into the camp’s economy and improving the living conditions of Syrian refugees, and even more so during the lockdown due to COVID-19.

Muhoza, Cassilde, Wikman Anna, and Rocio Diaz-Chavez. Mainstreaming gender in urban public transport: lessons from Nairobi, Kampala and Dar es Salaam. Stockholm Environment Institute, May 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.51414/sei2021.006.

Full text
Abstract:
The urban population of Africa, the fastest urbanizing continent, has increased from 19% to 39% in the past 50 years, and the number of urban dwellers is projected to reach 770 million by 2030. However, while rapid urbanization has increased mobility and created a subsequent growth in demand for public transport in cities, this has not been met by the provision of adequate and sustainable infrastructure and services. The majority of low-income residents and the urban poor still lack access to adequate transport services and rely on non-motorized and public transport, which is often informal and characterized by poor service delivery. Lack of access to transport services limits access to opportunities that aren’t in the proximity of residential areas, such as education, healthcare, and employment. The urban public transport sector not only faces the challenge of poor service provision, but also of gender inequality. Research shows that, in the existing urban transport systems, there are significant differences in the travel patterns of and modes of transport used by women and men, and that these differences are associated with their roles and responsibilities in society. Moreover, the differences in travel patterns are characterized by unequal access to transport facilities and services. Women are generally underrepresented in the sector, in both its operation and decision-making. Women’s mobility needs and patterns are rarely integrated into transport infrastructure design and services and female users are often victims of harassment and assault. As cities rapidly expand, meeting the transport needs of their growing populations while paying attention to gender-differentiated mobility patterns is a prerequisite to achieving sustainability, livability and inclusivity. Gender mainstreaming in urban public transport is therefore a critical issue, but one which is under-researched in East Africa. This research explores gender issues in public transport in East Africa, focusing in particular on women’s inclusion in both public transport systems and transport policy decision-making processes and using case studies from three cities: Nairobi, Kampala and Dar es Salaam.

Macdonald, Keir. The Impact of Business Environment Reforms on Poverty, Gender and Inclusion. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), January 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.006.

Full text
Abstract:
This rapid review synthesises the literature from academic, policy, and knowledge institution sources on how business environment reforms in middle-income countries impacts on poverty, gender and inclusion. Although, there is limited evidence on the direct impact of business environment reforms on poverty, gender, and inclusion, this review illustrates that there is evidence of indirect effects of such reforms. Business environment reform (BER) targets inadequate business regulations and institutions, in order to remove constraints to business investment and expansion, enabling growth and job creation, as well as new opportunities for international business to contribute to and benefit from this growth. However, there is a lack of detailed knowledge of the impact of BER on gender and inclusion (G&I) outcomes, in terms of the potential to remove institutional barriers which exclude formerly marginalised groups from business opportunities, in ways that promote equal access to resources, opportunities, benefits, and services. The literature shows how the business environment affects women in business, and how women’s experiences of a given business environment can be different from those of men. This is the result of disparities in how they are treated under the law, but also based on structural and sociocultural factors which influence how men and women behave in a given business environment and the barriers they face.

Abstract:
The limited participation of Iraqi women in community decision-making in Kirkuk and Diyala is the result of various intertwined factors. This study explores emerging opportunities for social transformation in the context of sedimented layers of male privilege and the questioning of restrictive gender norms in the two governorates. With this report, Oxfam and its partners aim to dismantle barriers to women’s active participation, which is currently constrained by stereotypes and restrictive ideas about gender. Among the promising pathways for change are awareness-raising activities with male allies, alongside other longer-term efforts advancing transformative change in attitudes, practices, and behaviors.
